Billboard.com is reporting that 62 year old bassist Trevor Bolder died earlier toady after a long battle with cancer. Trevor Bolder was a long-time member of 70's hard-rockers Uriah Heep and had also played occasionally with Wishbone Ash. In the early-mid 1970's Bolder was the touring bassist with David Bowie's legendary Spiders From Mars band.

Reports are confirming that former White Zombie and long-time Last Crack drummer Phil Buerstatte was found dead at the age of 44 over the weekend near Madison, Wisconsin. No cause of death has been released and no further information as to the circumstances of his passing are known at this time.

Buerstatte played drums with the art-scum-metal darlings White Zombie from 1992 until 1994 and was also a long-time member of the Madison, WI based metal band Last Crack, from 1986 - 1997.

After early morning thunderstorms rolled trough, soaking the area and threatening to put a bit of a damper on the proceedings, the meteorological situation improved enough so as to produce a nice, mild and rain-free late afternoon and evening allowing one to get out and enjoy the first outdoor show of the year.

After meeting up at our place with some good friends we were off to Mound, MN, about 30 minutes away, to check out the annual Our Lady of the Lake Blast Block Party featuring the following roster of bands:

4:30 - Red Dot Garage
5:45 - Lizzy Herder
6:45 - The Days Between
8:15 - The Oddfathers
10:00 - Night Ranger

We parked on the street right out in front of the school that was hosting this whole shindig and then, making our way back around the school building, we passed through the will call ticketing process. A moment or two later, after being I.D.'ed and "Miller Light" wrist-banded, we were all making our way inside the area behind the school where a very large tent had been erected and the sound of someone sound checking could already be heard coming from inside as a few early arrivals such as ourselves lingered about outside.

Getting there a bit after 4:00pm, we were among some of the first to arrive and after quickly navigating our way into the big tent and then past the white-robed fellow above (who, to me, looks like he might have some sort of anti-rock 'n' roll agenda) we easily found ourselves a great spot just off to the left of the soundboard. The view was nice and mostly unobstructed and the stage was high enough off the ground to afford even the shortest of concert goers a great view from anywhere under the tent. We were also located near an open side of the tent, allowing for plenty of fresh air which was also very nice, but still covered completely in case of rain, which, thankfully, never occurred.

Red Dot Garage kicked things off around 4:30 to a sparse, early-arrivals only crowd. Starting off strong(er) with a few covers including some Gin Blossoms number I was never very fond of anyway and an admittedly pretty decent cover of "Can't Hardly Wait" by the Replacements, I thought they actually lost a bit of steam as they made their way through the later part of their set. The volume was nice and loud...but I just wasn't really feeling what they were doing.

The Lizzy Herder band was up next and...despite the fact the front woman really does have a pretty good voice and an obvious undeniable vocal talent, I couldn't wait for her and her band to be done almost as soon as they started playing. The material itself was definitely the problem here for me, a seemingly never ending set of lite-as-air music that has nothing musically that I'm interested in by any stretch of the imagination. Our little group ordered up some of the $7.00(!) cheeseburgers and a few more beers and sodas around this time and visited amongst ourselves for throughout rest of the LHB set.

After a brief set-change and a few quick from-the-stage announcements from KQRS Morning Show co-host fan favorite Terri Traen, the band called "The Days Between" were up next.

Easily the best band on the bill so far, The Days Between play a guitar-heavy cross of 80's and 90's alt-and-classic rock sounds and they seemed to be getting a good reaction from the people who went down front to dance a bit and check them out up close as they played their set. I was enjoying them as well, they sounded pretty good and like everyone one else so far were very loud, but as we continued to converse among our group at our table while they played, everyone's attention and conversation was pretty much primarily focused on the next band on the bill.

The Days Between finished up and KQ chick Terri Traen and a few KQ interns came back on stage and drew some names for some prizes or something, I wasn't really paying attention to be honest, and then they worked the crowd for a few minutes while the crew began to set up for The Oddfathers.

Our pal Kevin agreed to stay back with our table as the rest of us moved into position, right up against the barrier in the front row. After some additional intro music the stage lights came up bright, the Oddfathers appeared and came out blasting, sounding and looking great right from the start.

Fresh off some Mother's Day weekend recording sessions in Minneapolis with famed record producer Eddie Kramer, The Oddfathers sounded tighter and a bit more ferocious and focused than at any of their prior gigs so far. Not to say they haven't sounded great at all of their shows, but they just seem to keep getting better each time they do this. And as to all appearances, this was the largest crowd the band had yet played to in its entire 5-gig history and the people that continued to come down and join in the fun down front as they played through their set seemed to really be enjoying seeing them for the first time, cheering enthusiastically after each song ended.

The entire band sounded great - a very loud and completely crystal clear sound mix were very enjoyable in the outdoor environment where these kind of brilliant sound conditions are not always achieved.

The setlist this time around included one brand new track, "Hey You!" which was "written just last week," according to frontman Brynn Arens as he introduced the song - a somewhat punkish-sounding thing. One of our favorites, "Lonely," was noticeably absent this time around, as was "Odd-O-Matic Man." The fact this particular song was not played comes as no surprise really as I was trying to figure out before the show how they were gonna try and get away with playing a song about a vibrator in love with its owner...to a Church School Benefit crowd. They didn't bother. "California Sunshine" moved from its usual near the end-of-set placement to second song of the show overall while usual set closer "Another Tear Goes Dry" retained its end of set placement.

Here's the ONE video you get from the Oddfathers set this time around, an almost 10-minute clip of the aforementioned set closer "Another Tear Goes Dry." Near the end of the song, Brynn began motioning this enthusiastic guy down front to jump the barricade and jump up on stage to join the band for some end of the show antics. The guy in question just happened to be our pal Erik! So he scambled his ass over the barricade and a moment later was standing, a bit shocked that he was there perhaps, on stage with The Oddfathers as they closed out the final moments of what I think may have been their best performance yet.

-During the set change between The Oddfathers and the evenings headliners Night Ranger I busied myself with conversation with our friends, a lot of it centered around the fact our pal Erik was now an official rock star, having just lived the dream of joining the Oddfathers on stage...and living to tell about it too! By this time quite a large crowd of maybe 2,000 or so had assembled both inside the tent and outside it as well as people milled about enjoying the pleasant spring temperatures, beer and food as the minutes ticked down to the highly anticipated appearance of the final band of the evening.

At just after 10:00pm, to huge applause, southern California hard rock legends Night Ranger appeared on stage and began rocking their way through a nearly hour-and-half long set, kicking things off with a newer track...

...and then moving all the way back in their catalog to a classic, "Sing Me Away" from their 1982 debut album "Dawn Patrol."

Unlike during the Oddfathers set, I was not in the front row for the Night Ranger set, instead choosing to avoid the crush of people up front and hanging back with our group at our table. Even back where we were it was plenty loud and I felt I was still able to get a decent shot of the band from where we were.

It has become pretty standard expectation in the past several years to hear at least one Damn Yankees track during a Night Ranger show and this show proved no exception to that expectation, the band continuing on with "Coming Of Age" but only after Night Ranger/Damn Yankees frontman/bassist Jack Blades gives a shoutout to fellow Damn Yankee, the guitarist, outdoorsman and darling of the liberal media, Motor City Madman Ted Nugent.

The theme song to the 1987 Michael J. Fox movie "the Secret Of My Success" was up next. Night Ranger have placed songs on many movie soundtracks throughout 31 year career, but this is probably the one that is most well remembered.

*A brief note about the video you see and DON'T see:
I've included here the 10 songs from Night Rangers set that I managed to film. I made the decision a few times during the show to take a break and this usually occurred, strangely enough, when the band broke into one of its many signature power ballads. I'm sure I missed two, maybe three or even four songs - they were not filmed - and do not appear here.

At this point the band were doing some vocal game-playing with the audience and I turned the camera back on just in time to capture this "sing along with Night Ranger" on the Beatles classic "Hey Jude," which was really kind of fun.

And then comes a big surprise to me and the rest our group and, I'm sure, several others in the crowd. Jack Blades tells this story of how back in the day wild-man guitarist Brad Gillis was actually the guitarist who filled in for the then-recently deceased Randy Rhoads on Ozzy Osbourne's late 1982 - early 1983 tour before going back to Night Ranger full time. So anyway, this fact is somewhat well known to die hard Ozzy and/or Night Ranger fans and is a cool story. But...I've seen Night Ranger maybe 5 or 6 times now and they've never told that story or done what they did next - they actually played Ozzy's classic "Crazy Train!"

The next one was a track I always hope to hear when I see Night Ranger, another guitar driven deep track from their '82 debut called "Eddie's Comin' Out Tonight."

The hit single "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" closed out the main set.

The band came back after a brief break and did the one everyone was waiting for, "Sister Christian." Despite the ad copy at the very top of the story here, I definitely wasn't here to hear that one, although it seemed many, many people were as the place erupted into a giant puke-inducing sing-along during its performance. I didn't film it and I'm not sorry that I didn't. So there.

Seeing the band a few times previously, I knew they'd close with another rocker and true to form they delivered, closing out the night with the song that will probably be their set closer forever...and hey, why the hell not?

Night Ranger is still kicking ass.
The Oddfathers are just beginning to kick ass.
It's almost summer time in America and rock and roll is alive and well here...

...as it always has been.

Former Division Nine Vocalist Recovering From Stroke

Just got word that our pal Steve Carey, vocalist formerly with central Minnesota hard rockers Division Nine, suffered a stroke at some point within the past few days and is now recovering in an area hospital surrounded by friends and family while his doctors try to determine a cause for this unexpected and untimely medical development.

Hang in there Steve - The Gorgeous One and I wish you a speedy recovery. Looking forward to seeing you up and kicking ass again soon!

Last night, as in years past, Lee's Liquor Lounge in Minneapolis played host to the annual "Ramones Mania" American Cancer Society fundraiser benefit concert.

The 2013 edition of "Ramones Mania" featured twelve bands (some of them making repeat "Ramones Mania" appearances) and between-sets music selections by "DJ Rock The Monkey."

For those of you unfamiliar with "Ramones Mania," the premise is this: Several local bands appear, each playing brief, 15-to-20 minute sets of exclusively Ramones and Ramones-related material, with all proceeds going to American Cancer Society charities.

With a nice sized, early arriving crowd in attendance, things kicked off with a set from "Ramones Mania" veterans "The Emilys," who have opened the event several years in a row now.

The "Teddy Roosevelts," playing only their second show ever, were up next.

The third band to take the stage was "Bad Accident," who I thought definitely captured the rousing spirit of the Ramones tunes they chose to include in their set.

Next up were "I.V. League." Their vocalist/guitarist had special "Ramones Mania 2013" guitar picks made up for the show - we managed to score one - you can see it at the very bottom of the post here.

We also managed to liberate one of the I.V. League's setlists from the stage after they finished up.

Next up: The 99ers.

After the 99ers finished up their set things mellowed out a bit with a few acoustically-arranged selections by guitarist "Nick Rod" and an accompanying female guitarist who's name I never did catch. I decided to give the camera a rest during this set...so no video.

After the hippies finished up and left the stage, "Road To Ruin" were up next and they blasted through a set of around 5 or 6 high-energy songs, their guitarist sporting a hilariously accurate Dee Dee Ramone wig.

The camera, by this time, was signaling me that the current battery charge was nearing the end and was about to die. I was hoping it would hold out for at least one more set. "Meat Raffle Road," who were also making a return appearance at "Ramones Mania," were up next.

The camera held out throughout the "Meat Raffle Road" set and even seemed to have a bit more charge left as "GST with Natalie Lovejoy" took the stage next. Unfortunately, as they played the first song of their set, the camera finally gave out mid-song and that was it for our video recording for the evening.

"GST with Natalie Lovejoy" played an oddly Jazz-styled variation of a few Ramones tunes complete with trumpet and saxophone. The highlight of their set was definitely their twisted, unique version of "I Wanna Be Sedated."

According to the schedule, "Poor Failey" were up next. And to tell you the truth...I can't recall anything memorable about their set at all - sorry guys - I might have been out having a smoke.

Next up were another "Ramones Mania" return act, "Bob Loblaw," who announced as they took the stage that they were "already drunk and," were "about to blast through 10 songs in fifteen minutes." Much to their credit they accomplished this stated goal. Unfortunately they were playing so fast and loose and sloppy that it all sounded like a bunch of noise, one song nearly indistinguishable from the next. But, in their defense, they looked like they were having a lot of fun and the audience seemed to really be enjoying them too, much drunken pogoing and pseudo-moshing taking place in front of the stage.

Before the final band of the evening came on stage, the emcee announced that "over 250 people" had each paid $10.00 at the door, helping raise "over $2,500" for the American Cancer Society.

The final band of the evening, repeat "Ramones Mania" performers "The Capitol Guitar All-Stars" finished things up with a flourish of speed and volume and then, around four hours after it began, "Ramones Mania 2013" was in the history books.

"Ramones Mania" 2013 - an annual benefit for the American Cancer Society - takes place (as always) at Lee's Liquor Lounge in Minneapolis this coming Saturday night, May 11th. Those of you that have been paying attention may remember back in March I posted the "teaser trailer" for the currently-in-production "McCrea 1971," an upcoming documentary film that focuses on the overly ambitious June 1971 "Celebration Of Life" festival that took place along the banks of the Atchafalaya River near McCrea, Louisiana. If you are unfamiliar with this somewhat overlooked festival (as most are) you can read more about it in a piece I posted back in June 2011 HERE.

Earlier today I received an email from one of the films producers, Nick Brilleaux, who informs that the 25 minute film is coming along nicely, is set for a "late 2013" release, and that a "full" version of the film trailer has just been released:
