I've been meaning to use it for something Friday/weekend related, but never got around to it. {ah well~}

Anyway, the weekend is coming up, and as the title would suggest, I'm excited about it. I'll be going to my first roller derby bout and catching up with an old friend while dining on THE MOST DELICIOUS PIZZA EVER! There might be pictures, if the derby permits, but none of the shy&elusive friend. ;)

So, for anyone reading this, I hope you have an awesome weekend as well! n_n
Shot this photo the day before the tornadic weather erupted in North Texas. I thought the clouds looked so pretty, and commented to a friend that they reminded me of Falcor. It wasn't until later on that night that I found out these were the sort of clouds that arrived just before a huge storm like the one everyone in NTX experienced.

I guess if I were the overly-pc sort I might amend my comment to say they're not so pretty anymore, but that would be a lie because I still think they were lovely looking. :3

Yesterday I posted an entry about a scrapbook found in an Alphonse Mucha photo album. Well.. on that same visit, I also came across two donated composition notebooks that happened to have the first 2 chapters of a story written by a young girl? The handwriting is incredibly hard to decipher at times, but I've managed to gather that the story is about a young black teen living in a bad neighborhood who wants to move to New York and become a supermodel.

Do we have the makings of the next tween sensation to follow Twilight?
Probably not.

The other day I stopped at a thrift store in hopes of finding some vintage books for a project I had in mind, but as I was perusing the shelves I came across an Alphonse Mucha photo album that I thought would be awesome for my brother (who happens to be a major fan of mucha), but when I opened the album I was very surprised to find that it still had a few pages left inside from it's previous owner.

Based on what I found, I'm not exactly sure what to think of it. I'd imagine it's some kind of "dream scrapbook", and I can't really tell if it was made by a man or a woman (see the last image for added confusion).

Anyway, enjoy the oddness that the dreams of 1993 can bring. :)
The weather report from last night said that our area should expect an 80% chance of snow (2-4 inches). Naturally I was excited about this because snow is a rarity in Texas, but I was also skeptical. I didn't really expect the snow to fall that much or last longer than one day.

And sure enough, I was right. I think we got about 1/2 an inch of snow, and by 8pm it was already melting away.

Still.... the snow we got made everything look so pretty. So I braved the SUPER cold weather to take a few pictures.

Hey guys! Just wanted to let you know that I have a brand new blog set-up just for the 2011 photo challenge. I decided to put it on tumblr because I like their photo blog layouts better.

(don't worry blogger, i still love you.)

Anywho, you should totally check it out, and if you're on tumblr (too) maybe you can "follow" it, and I'll probably "follow" you back, then we could be "follow" buddies!? {yay!}

PS: I promise I won't follow you irl, if you can promise the same for me? {thanks!}

She left a note inside saying that she didn't know a lot about that kind of art, but that she liked the idea of leaving fun things around to brighten someone's day.
And to be honest, I wasn't too concerned with her saying that because as soon as I pulled the contents out of the package, I fell in love with everything!

Seriously... how cool is all of that? I'm going to have such a hard time parting with any of it, because the idea of the swap is to send something to your partner for them to place out in the world. But I'm now tempted to just place this stuff around my apartment. ;D

{nooo... must follow through with the plan!}
{and maybe keep some of it for myself. huhuhu.}

Oh, and you may have noticed the little creature-like objects in the photo. These were totally my favorite. They're actually empty pistachio shells and they came packaged in a neat looking playing card box.

When I was opening the package, I was in the parking lot of a store, and I thought about leaving one or two in there, but then I started to worry about the little guys. They seemed too fragile for the harsh, uncaring terrain of a busy store. I imagined them being knocked over and crushed under the feet of shoppers with one goal in mind: "spend! consume!"

So... I'm still trying to think of a safe place for them, but so far.. I've come up with nothing. Maybe I could sneak some into a few packages I need to mail? That might work for this. After all, you'd be crazy not to crack a smile after seeing one of these unexpectedly, right? :)

{of course!}&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp n_n

Well... here's an interesting start to the new year... :)

the obligatory 2011 resolution post

Now that 2010 is gone and 2011 is finally here, I realize that some of the resolutions I made early last year, I didn't quite stick with. I wonder if that's due to the fact that I didn't have anyone to hold me to them? I did sort of hoard my resolutions away in my head like a squirrel gathering nuts for winter.. sharing them with NO ONE!

But it's possible that if I had at least told my mother, I could have relied on her to nag me in the way mother's do when they try to be helpful but only end up making you begrudgingly complete whatever task they brought up, all the while grumbling and having you feeling like you're 5 years old again.

Wait.. I think I lost my point in why being accountable for something was a good idea...

Well.. anyway, my point is that I failed a few of my resolutions last year, and I've decided to post the ones I came up with for 2011 on this blog, so that when 2012 comes around we can either congratulate me (or) make fun of my horrible failures!! (Yay! Won't that be fun? :D)

{ps: i love you, internet.}

Alright, here's what I've come up with so far:

* Get back into shape: I know, I know. A lot of people are listing weight loss as one of their top resolutions, but I don't want to lose weight, I actually want to gain some muscle weight. I'm at a good size, but unfortunately I've gotten a tiny bit flabby. I'm not a kid anymore, so I can't really get away with a fast food diet and lounging on the couch like I did when I was 12. So yeah.. treadmill, running, more bicycling, and possibly some yoga is in store for the year.

* Be more consistent: I mostly mean this with regard to breaking bad habits. I've heard that new habits are formed by repeating them every day for a week. I'm not exactly sure how true this is, because, sadly, I've never made it to a week when it came to creating better habits. :( But I really need to "be more consistent" about these sort of things, and with life in general.

* Take more photos: Joining the 365 photo challenge might help with this, but I worry that it might be too daunting a task for me to undertake right now. {No, no... be strong. You can do it!} {Yeah. Damn right I can!!} ... Okay, the 365 photo challenge is confirmed as a yes.

* Meditate: I've never tried meditation before, but I think it might be the ticket to combating my stress and anxiety levels.

* Get a tattoo: Self-explanatory. I already have one picked out, and don't worry, it's not lame.

* Try to see things from a more positive side: This is a hard one for me. My usual response to someone telling me I'm being negative is, "I'm not being negative, I'm being realistic." - Because obviously any positivity is strictly for people living in imaginary fairyland!! (kidding) - But I'm going to try my best to have a more upbeat perspective

* Become more acquainted with my extended family: I feel really distant from the rest of family, and that's mostly my own fault. So this year, I'm going to make an effort to get to know them better by attending more family functions. I will have to draw the line at holding babies, though. Sorry. Just can't do it. Their frailty scares me :(

* Drink more water: Oh man.. I am so bad with this. You're supposed to drink 8 glasses of water a day, but I'm not prepared to embarrass myself by telling you how many glasses I actually drink in a day. (hint: it's most definitely less than 8)

* Buckle down on a plan for opening my own store (finally!): I've been holding this off for so long, and I really need to get into the major planning stages for this. So far the only thing I'm definite on is that I want to operate it in Austin.

* Read (at least) one book a month: The massive collection of unread books on my bookshelf demands it!

Annnd... that's all of it.

Crossing my fingers now, and hoping that I remember to stick to them. :)

525,600

I was never the sort of person who liked to make a big deal about the upcoming New Year with showy celebrations and fireworks. So tonight I've opted to stay home and watch movies with Toph and my family. My parents still make a big deal about the NY ball drop, and as they sit there watching the tv, waiting for the ball drop, I contemplate my past year and everything that I've experienced.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Early in the year, I was admitted to the ER and found out I had an arrhythmic heart (ie. heart flutters) that was complicated by low potassium in my system. Prescribed medication, and now I have to eat a banana every day at least. {ps. i hate bananas. blegh!}

Spent fun weekends with someone important.

Had a major and disastrous breakup.

Attended my first live music performance (The Protomen), and met 2 friends I'd talked to online for awhile. {was so nervous about meeting them, but it turned out great!}

Met (and started dating) an amazing guy who helps keep me positive and optimistic. Best thing of all: he's a total dork, like me, and I'm looking forward to seeing what the new year brings us.

Attended my second live music performance!! Can you guess which band? Haha.. It was The Protomen, again. This was definitely a memorable experience for me because K.I.L.R.O.Y came out into the audience, picked me up, and carried me for a bit. I tried to conceal my shock/excitement but I think I failed at it. :)

Started volunteer work. Fun, fun! I'd really like to start volunteering with an animal shelter too, but I worry that seeing dogs in sad states might be too depressing for me. {i love animals way too much..}

Dyed my hair red! I've never had my hair any other color besides dark brown and medium brown, so this was an interesting change. The red wasn't as bright as I had hoped for, because I used it over my natural dark brown hair, but it looked cool anyway. The final color sort of reminded me of a raspberry tootsie roll pop... but now it's pretty much fading out. I'll have to re-dye it soon.

Started work on managing my temper. I think I'm actually doing much better on this. It takes me a bit longer these days to get me to flip out over something. But, it's still a work in progress. {my friend likes to joke that this is due to the "latin fire" in me.. =_=}

Started journaling again. DAILY!

Firmly decided that I need to live in Austin after making a weekend trip there to see Jeph Jacques (of QC fame) at a signing. Making plans to hopefully move there within a year or two.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

And I think that's it? It's so weird to see some of my memorable experiences in list-form, but it's nice to look at it and know that I've accomplished a few of my personal goals.

So with that said, here's my goodbye to 2010. It was a long road with a few bumps, but I learned a lot about myself and I can't wait to tackle 2011! :D
But for those who aren't familiar with it, it's the "Free Compliments" flyer that was mentioned here. I thought it was such a neat idea, but was bummed that there was no available print-out for it. And thus, I gave up on the idea of posting up compliment fliers until someone was awesome enough to create a pdf printout of it, and while I do thank them for that, I also have to admit that, because my printer is lacking color ink, the pdf flyer was (sadly) too ink intensive for me. So... I decided to create my own version of this flyer, that wouldn't use so much printer ink. =x Hopefully I'm not stepping on any toes by offering that... (And if you'd like to print it out, you can download the full-size version on the left)

Yesterday, I made a trip to Michaels in hopes of finding some kind of "lazy man's" kit (or contraption) for making recycled paper because I had this big plan of using it to make some seedbomb paper. But the local Michaels store didn't have anything like this, so I will have to do things the "hard" way and possibly ruin a blender for that particular project...

And while that might've ruined my night, I later found out that the trip was not a complete waste.

I walked around the store for a bit and came across the crafts for young girls aisle. I scanned over the blindingly pink colored items, skimmed the lace-frilled fabric and "girl power" emblazoned products, and my eyes instantly locked-on to a product that I felt would entertain me for at least one evening.

Say hello to Fashion Angels' 100% Cool Badgemaker! (or for those of you who have no idea what they mean by badges, they're also called pinback buttons.)

I figured I'd go ahead and buy it because I've wanted to try making my own pinback buttons and it's not like I'd be wasting any money if it turned out to be a total pieceofcrap. After all, it was only $3.99 (well.. $6.99 originally, plus a 50% off coupon.)

Besides, the sample badge of the drawn elephant on the cardboard display was, sadly, a little more than enough to entice me to try my hand at this product.

So here's what the kit looks like after freeing it of the plastic shell prison (minus a few pieces because I made a few "badges" already.)

In this kit, you get 1 plastic badgemaker, 10 plastic badges with pins attached, 10 clear plastic circles, and 10 paper circles.

To start things off, you'll need to read the included instructions. But this is where things take a confusing turn. The instructions have no text to go along with the pictures, and normally this would be fine, but the pictures alone are confusing because they actually could use a bit of text explanation.

First, the instruction sheet gives you a picture of all the products that come with your badgemaker kit. Notice anything odd? .... Yeah... The instruction sheet tells you that your kit comes with 10 pieces of 3 plastic components. But when I opened up my package, there were only 10 plastic badges/buttons.

So what do I do now?

Well... what the instructions FAILED to mention, was that I was supposed to somehow deconstruct the buttons into 3 separate pieces, and I was supposed to figure out how to do this on my own.

I tried prying the pieces off of each other, and after 10-15 minutes, I finally figured out that I was supposed to twist the pieces off in a clockwise motion:

<img style="border:1px dotted #99877D;"" height="150" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_W96HnijFhRI/TR1Lc4M55eI/AAAAAAAAAcU/RE6rtBtUccE/s200/bdgmkr_aftrinstruct_002.jpg" width="200" />

Yeah.... these instructions are definitely a major fail. Especially considering that this is a product intended for children, and even as an adult I had a hard time figuring out the missing instructions.

So I'm going to have to say that this product is definitely not worth 6.99, but paying 3.99 for it wasn't so bad. I mean... I did get some interesting buttons out of it after all:
Oh wow!.. I think I went a little overboard on the tearing-up portion of this idea, but for the most part, I got it finished. :)

Earlier this morning, I was searching DA for some art prints to cover my newly bare walls, and I came across the da.rtist {jeffrey}. After looking through a few of his gallery photos and prints available for sale, I am now officially in love with his work.

I have a few favorites amongst the work I've viewed so far, but this one definitely stood out to me because I have a few friends who seem to be dealing with life issues, and are generally feeling stuck or frustrated about not being able to progress as quickly as they'd like.

(yeah, i know the feeling...)

Patience by ~jeffrey on deviantART

Sometimes, I wish I had the right magic words to tell them that would instantly soothe their fears, and let them know that, "Yes. Everything will be alright. Just continue being the awesome person you are, and I'm almost certain that life will reward you for it." But sometimes, it's not enough. Sometimes I feel like I almost fail them in that aspect. And yeah, it's a sucky feeling, because the people I've surrounded myself with lately are such PHENOMENAL people. I wish nothing but the best for them, and it always makes me a little sad to see them stumble even a little over the various roadblocks in life.

Am I being too sensitive?

Perhaps.

But this is why I love jeffrey's artwork so much. A lot of it reflects what I feel inside, and how I feel the world at large should look at life and approach it.

So... I'm definitely proud to share this newfound "love" of mine, in hope that maybe his words will inspire you too. :)

I came across this in one of my mom's books. Normally I don't pay attention to anything in them, but this one stood out to me. Sort of... food for thought...?

- - - - - - - - - -

(taken from the book, "Life Beyond 100: Secrets of the Fountain of Youth", by C. Norman Shealy, M.D., Ph.D.)

Eysenck's Personality Types

Perhaps one of the most interesting studies of this phenomenon was completed by Hans Eysenck working with a colleague in Germany. Essentially, Eysenck categorized individuals into four basic lifestyle personalities:

    Type I individuals tend to have a lifelong pattern of hopelessness. These individuals seem to have had a feeling of abandonment in childhood, and they always want love and nurturing from someone who is not capable of, or interested in, returning that love. Therefore, they often choose an abusive spouse or crave a relationship with someone with whom it is not possible. These Type I individuals have an average life expectancy 35 years less than certain other types. Incredibly, Eysenck found that 75 percent of adult individuals who die of cancer have a Type I personality, as do 15 percent of adults who die of heart disease.

    Type II individuals have a lifelong pattern of severe blame or anger. They feel abused. They often pick fights or act as if they want to pick a fight. Seventy-five percent of adults who die of heart disease have this type of personality, as do 15 percent of people who die of cancer.

    Type III individuals are mixed. They bounce between hopelessness and anger. Approximately 9 percent of people who die of cancer or heart disease have a Type III personality.

    Type IV individuals are those whom Abraham Maslow would have called self-actualized. These individuals believe happiness is an inside job and approach life with an almost Zenlike sensibility: You cannot make me happy; you cannot make me unhappy. Type IV individuals tend to die of old age or natural causes. Fewer than 1 percent of individuals who die of cancer or heart disease have a basic Type IV personality.

- - - - - - - - - -

I guess you can't really argue with facts, but if this is truly the case, it should give everyone more of a reason to let go of old grudges, and just focus on happiness, rather than unhappiness. I mean, life is short, so why bother living the rest of it dwelling on negativity? :)

If you're like me, and you collect various art magazines, you're probably keeping them hoarded up in your room because the art in them is too amazing to just throw out. This used to be my problem. I have so many art mag back-issues piling up in my closet that I refused to throw out because the artwork and photography in them is too nice to just toss out into the trash or recycle bin. So, I was always trying to think of ways to re-use the art in some way, to maybe give it a second use, or a longer life.

A few weeks ago, I came across the "Magazine Page #2 - Handmade Postcard" swap on swap-bot, and finally (!), I'd found a way to recycle the pages and give them another use: awesome artsy postcards! :D

Now... I'm not really a collector of postcards, but I loved being able to make my own handmade postcards, and the idea of sharing the art I love with other people was another plus! :D

So... for anyone interesting in making their own, I've decided to post a tutorial with my method for creating beautiful (and sturdy) magazine page postcards.

(keep in mind, it's image intensive. so.. if you're on dial-up, my apologies.)

- - - - - - - - - -

The above is a sample image of some of the postcards I've made using the steps after the jump below.

- - - - - - - - - -

Now, first things first. What will you need for this project?:

* Some magazine pages you want to use

* A couple pieces of thin cardboard (or sturdy cardstock). Cut up grocery/cereal boxes work well for this!

* An x-acto knife with a sharp blade

* A good cutting mat (optional, maybe? but this will protect whatever surface you're cutting on)

* Scissors

* A few sheets of blank postcard-sized cardstock (most craft stores sell packs of pre-cut postcards for about $2.99) [usps guidelines for postcard sizes]

* 1 can of Elmer's Craft Bond spray adhesive

* 1 roll of permanent clear laminate (i bought mine at a wal-mart for about $6)

** If you don't want to use vinyl laminate, you could also use clear packing tape to laminate the top of your postcard, but because packing tape isn't wide enough, you will use about 3 strips to cover one postcard, and that might cause tape overlay lines.

* A disposable liner to protect your spraying surface. An old paper grocery bag will work.

Optional:

* A postcard rubber stamp (if you want, you can just draw the separator and address lines yourself with a pen and ruler)

** A pen and ruler

* Stamp ink

* Glue sticks

- - - - - - - - - -

Okay, now that we have everything we need, we can get started!

The way I normally start this off, is by gluing one of the blank white postcards to a section of cardboard. Make sure to cover your spraying surface with something you don't mind getting spray glue on (like an old paper bag.)

For those of you opting to use glue sticks instead of spray adhesive, this is where you begin gluing the white card to the cardboard. Make sure to press firmly along the corners, because this is where the card is more likely to peel back up.

(The reason I add a cardboard layer is so the final postcard ends up a little more sturdy. The postal service isn't exactly gentle with handling postcards, so the sturdier the postcard, the less likely it will rip during transit.)

Set this aside to dry, and move on to the next step...

Find the image you want to use for your postcard, and measure out how much clear laminate you'll need to cover it, and cut it out.

Using clear packing tape? Get it ready for the next steps.

Once you've got your clear laminate sheet cut out, you'll need to peel it off the protective sheet, and lay it (smooth side down) on a clean, flat surface. (Make sure not to let the sticky side touch anything.) Now that the laminate is on your flat surface, take your image, and carefully(!) lay the front image onto the sticky part of the laminate. Smooth out any bubbles, and firmly press your image down to adhere it more.

For those of you using clear packing tape, all you need to do is cover the entire image in strips of clear tape. It might take about 3 strips, and it's okay if the tape extends past the magazine page. We'll get to that in the next step.

Okay, so now you should have a piece of a page laminated, and there is probably some extra on the sides of your selected page, right? Well, all you need to do about that is slightly trim the edges of the page. (see below for an example)..

Be careful in trimming your page, because if you cut off too much from the sides, you might not have enough to cover your postcard. It's better to have more than you need, than just barely enough.

When you've got your page trimmed, you might notice that the laminated side is really shiny, and possibly clear-frosted looking? (check second image below) If you want, you can eliminate some of the frosty look, by using either your nail, a coin, or a strong credit card, and rubbing it against the tape/vinyl. It should look much better after this. :)

- - - - - - - - - -

Alright! Now that we have our cardboard and laminated image, what do we do next?

First, take the postcard cardboard, and carefully(!) trim off the extra cardboard using your x-acto knife. It might take 2-3 slow slides down the side to cut off. And definitely make sure to be careful, because if you're not, you might accidentally slip and let the knife cut into your postcard. So go slow, and keep constant pressure.

After you've finished with that, head outside to glue the postcard to the backside of your image. Press firmly down on the postcard for better adhesiveness and apply extra pressure to the corners. Same thing goes for anyone using glue sticks, only... you won't need to go outside for this. :P

Once the glue has dried, you'll need to trim off the page edges...

NOW!!! Flip your card over and voila! You're done! And this is what the finished product might look like.

- - - - - - - - - -

Additional step: if you want.. you can take your postcard rubber stamp, and apply the separator/address lines to the back. Or you can draw them on with a pen and ruler.

Other than that, that's it!!

I'm not exactly sure if this was a complicated tutorial, I have a habit of making things seem overcomplicated because I try to include every detail, but if it introduces someone to something new, then I guess it was worth it. :)

The other day, I went to pick up a few groceries (okay, actually I just went to pick up a slice of Boston creme pie, but that's beside the point..) and I noticed that they had a board (covered with post-it notes) asking the question, "Favorite sides?"

Obviously there weren't any post-it's left because it was already 4 days since Thanksgiving had taken place, but regardless, the store still had the board and post-it's up for anyone to see. Of course there were the typical answers like stuffing, mashed potatoes, and corn... but there were also some unusual, and cute answers.

1.  2.  3.

[1] - Cuuuute. I love that his sister felt the need to edit this post-it as if she didn't like the idea that he would be lieing to any wfm customer. It's totally something I would've done with my own younger brother. {haha} .. There was also another post-it by Diego stating that he liked corn. This one had no edit made to it, so I can only assume that this one was the truth.

[2] - I've never thought of turkey and mashed potatoes as a meal worthy of Chardonnay, but apparently this customer would disagree with me. Very weird...

[3] - Hmm. Even though I'm a vegetarian, this particular post-it was a little annoying to see on there. Mostly because I dislike fellow veg*n's using guilt tactics to show others why being a vegan, or vegetarian, is better. Baaahh...

- - - - - - - - - -

Aside from those, there was another post-it with "my wife" written on it. I'm not sure what to think of that one, and I was going to take a picture of it, but a nearby employee was eyeing me suspiciously so I decided to stop taking photos and just get my Boston creme pie. :3

At the beginning of last month, I came across a swap for some cupcake toppers, but the theme was kept secret until someone could guess where the line, "You were almost a Jill sandwich," came from.

{ha! too easy!} .... Being the Resident Evil/allthingszombie-fan that I am, I immediately knew it was Barry Burton's line in RE1. So I quickly entered my guess, and {yay!} won some cupcake toppers from the host (kiwivandal of Meep) for guessing correctly (and shamefully quick, lol.)

A few weeks pass, and I get a large bubble envelope in my po box that was very quickly opened to find out what was inside...

(omgyay!)

=O

How awesome are they!? ... (If you're not sure yet because you are still in shock over how cool these look, I'll go ahead and answer for you: They are seriously awesome.)

I should also add that my camera didn't really seem to do them much justice, because the backing of the toppers have black and red glitter on them, but that doesn't show up well on my photos.

Anyway, I srsly love them, and seeing these has inspired me to try my hand at making some cupcake toppers of my own. :D

I can't believe I'm only just now finding out about this video.

I came across it by visiting random blogs (via blogger's "next blog" jump,) and landing on miss bizzy-body's blog. After viewing the video, I excitedly had to tell one of my friends about it, and then he casually asked me, "lol. That's your first time seeing that?"

It was. =( ... sigh I'm so left out of the internet loop...

Also, that kid is not a very good zombie (zombies have no interest in turtles, ldo.)
