Roy Hodgson confident Wayne Rooney will play against Scotland

2013-08-12T11:22:00.001-07:00

Roy Hodgson is confident that Wayne Rooney will play some part against Scotland, and insists speculation over his club future will not impact on his standing with England.

The striker has played only 45 minutes of pre-season football because of hamstring and shoulder injuries, but Manchester United gave him permission to report for duty at St George's Park.

Rooney was out on the training pitch on Monday half an hour before the scheduled start of the session - and Hodgson believes he will have a part to play on Wednesday.

"Wayne looked good," Hodgson told Sky Sports News. "There is no doubt in my mind that he is not suffering any injury. It will be good to look at the data once the session has finished and speak to him about how he feels.

"He's been training on his own and doing his physical fitness work, but has not beeen involved with functional aspects of play.

"Wayne looked good. There is no doubt in my mind that he is not suffering any injury."
Roy Hodgson

"I'm expecting him to be fit and ready to take part this week. I don't expect him to have any reprecussions from the session. The coaches and I will analyse the data and determine how many minutes he might get in the game."

'One of our best players'

Rooney's club future continues to be the subject of conjecture, but Hodgson does not expect it to impact on his performance for his country.

"It would be good if he can get his future sorted out," Hodgson added. "But I have been faced many times with a situation when players have not necessarily been playing in their club side, but they have still been selected.

"I'm not going to say if he is not selected for his club side then he will not be selcted for England. He will always be considered for England because he is one of our best players."

"Super cities" : San Francisco vs. Baltimore

2013-02-03T05:06:00.000-08:00

If the Super Bowl were about travel instead of football, then San Francisco would be a prohibitive favorite against Baltimore. I doubt there is a bookie between Las Vegas and Atlantic City who would take even-money action on a "best weekend away" showdown between the Bay Area and the Old Bay Seasoning State.

Though I have spent most of my life in Southern California, I spent five years living in the Bay Area and three years in southern Pennsylvania, where Baltimore was the place to go on the weekend. I know both cities well enough to make the kind of superficial, off-the-cuff comparisons that are common among Super Bowl prognosticators. I just keep it to sourdough vs. blue crabs instead of which Harbaugh brother is coaching the better team.

The Golden Gate Bridge is an iconic symbol of San Francisco.

So let's go to the depth charts. On the surface, a blowout for San Francisco. I am not going to claim a false parity between the two.

San Francisco is a world-class vacation city, the kind of place that people from around the globe pay thousands of dollars to visit. It's beautiful, urbane and cosmopolitan with a vibrant music scene and one championship already under its belt in the past year, by the World Series champion Giants. It has the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, cable cars, Ghirardelli Square, Nob Hill, Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf. It's a city of tourism all-stars.

Baltimore is often seen as that "other city" between Philadelphia and Washington. The one long past its heyday, which is somewhere more than 50 years ago. People on the West Coast get a lot of their ideas about the city from movies or TV, ranging from the loving ("Diner," "Tin Men") to the odd ("Pink Flamingos" and "Hairspray") to the hardscrabble and bleak ("The Wire"). A recurrent line in one of this year's best-picture nominees, "Silver Linings Playbook," is that if the lead character doesn't get it together he'll have to "go back to Baltimore," to the mental hospital where he spent time. If visitors know much of anything about Baltimore as a tourist destination, it's limited to a few hundred yards around the shops, eateries and sports venues of the Inner Harbor redevelopment that began more than three decades ago.

So San Francisco is the clear winner. Except the travel scoreboard would show the contest was closer than San Francisco boosters might like to think.

San Francisco's main weakness for me comes from its strength – it has been loved to death. Crammed onto a narrow peninsula, surrounded on three sides by water, it doesn't have enough real estate for all the people who dream of living there. So the people with a lot of money are forcing everyone else out of town.

In recent decades San Francisco sometimes feels more like an adult Disneyland than a real, working city. With the exception of some stubborn parts of the Tenderloin and areas in the southern part of the city, San Francisco has outsourced big hunks of its poverty to the East Bay. Along with Manhattan, it's the quintessential "nice place to visit but you'll never be rich enough to live here."

Baltimore, on the other hand, has no shortage of iffy neighborhoods. Knowing where you are going, especially at night, is a must. The city has lost a third of its population since World War II, with the suburbs sprawling ever outward. But around the Inner Harbor and over in Fell's Point, Baltimore is charming. Its Camden Yards baseball park is the original retro stadium, the template from which nearly every recent stadium – including San Francisco's AT&T Park – was designed.

San Francisco had the 1906 earthquake and fire, but Baltimore's civic martyrdom stretches from bombardment by the British in 1814 (Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner" while viewing the attack), anti-Union riots during the Civil War, workers riots in the 1870s and its own great fire two years before San Francisco's – in 1904. Prosperity came in fits and starts, but a long decline was signaled by the 1968 riots after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis.

The starter kit of any Baltimore vacation is the Inner Harbor: The Marketplace stores and restaurants, the brilliant glassy wedge of the National Aquarium, Camden Yards and the Ravens football stadium. But those who are more adventurous can check out some of the 72 historic districts, many with the fantastic row houses that are Baltimore's main architectural signature. There's the oldest Catholic cathedral in the U.S., the Baltimore Basilica. The "other" Washington Monument rises above the fun Mount Vernon neighborhood. Little Italy is where House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, the daughter of the mayor of Baltimore, grew up, and the neighborhood still has some great Italian restaurants. The San Francisco congresswoman is backing the 49ers. Fell's Point retains its nautical past and can be reached by a water taxi from the Inner Harbor.

Yes, there are a lot of areas in the east part of the city and portions of the west where you don't want to wander off. But there is a neighborhood texture that Baltimore holds onto, perhaps in hopes that one day its urban charms will bring the waves of gentrification that have turned around the likes of Williamsburg in Brooklyn or Pleasant Plains in Washington, D.C. Or even SOMA in San Francisco.

But that patchwork nature of the city means that prices are relatively modest when it comes to hotels and restaurants. Even excess luxury comes at a discount. A room tonight at the Four Seasons Baltimore starts at $299. A room tonight at the Four Seasons San Francisco is $535.

Bottom line – bet on San Francisco. But if you can get long odds on Baltimore as a travel destination, it would be a smart bet.

Robert Griffin III inactive for Redskins against Browns

:DESCRIPTION

After the Washington Redskins announced late Saturday via Twitter that fellow rookie quarterback Kirk Cousins would get the nod over injured starter Robert Griffin III for Sunday's tilt in Cleveland, multiple outlets Sunday morning reported that the NFL's co-leading passer will be inactive for the game.

According to reports by NFL.com and ESPN, Griffin will not dress Sunday, leaving veteran Rex Grossman as the only other available quarterback behind Cousins.

Griffin, who suffered a Grade 1 MCL sprain in last week's win against the Ravens, addressed the team's decision with a tweet of his own shortly after the announcement.

"The decision was not my own... But I will be there for my team!!! In every way I possibly can," Griffin tweeted.

Griffin officially had been listed as questionable after practicing all week. Coach Mike Shanahan, in a show of gamesmanship, was coy all week about who would start against the Browns, even though signs seemed to point toward Griffin.

USA TODAY Sports' Jim Corbett noted Friday that Griffin "seemed to have an extra bounce in his step as he skip-hopped to practice, showing good burst and no hitch on a rollout pass during the portion of practice open to reporters."

So this news comes as a bit of a surprise, especially considering the position in which Washington finds

:itself.

KEYWORDS

Now the Redskins will rely on Cousins, who closed out a dramatic win last week over the Ravens, to

keep pace in the NFC playoff race.

Heading into Sunday, Washington, at 7-6, is one game behind the New York Giants in the NFC East and one game behind the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears for the final wild card spot.

Ligue 1. L'OM proche du sommet, malgré les vents contraires...

Footballdimanche 16 décembre 2012

Jamais brillants, les Marseillais surprennent par leurs résultats. Mais jusqu'à quand cela va-t-il durer ?

AFP

:DESCRIPTION

:Keywords

Juniors make an impression in spirited scrimmage

2012-12-12T02:42:00.001-08:00

Team Canada world junior hopefuls Jonathan Huberdeau, left, and Ryan Murphy battle during the Red/White scrimmage at the Markin MacPhail arena at Canada Olympic Park on Tuesday night.

With this year’s world junior tournament reaping the benefits from the National Hockey League work-stoppage, it was clear Hockey Canada has plenty of talented players at their disposal.
Just ask any of the puck-starved, standing-room only crowd at WinSport’s facilities, catching Tuesday’s Red/White intra-squad game — they saw it too.
“It’s pretty attractive, isn’t it?” head coach Steve Spott was saying about their potential lineup. “There’s obviously a lot of skill out there, my lord ... we do have players that are going to have to play grittier and play tougher. But these Red/White games are tough.
“They’ve all played together in the program of excellence. It’ll be nice (Wednesday) to have a different level of competition and allow the players that play a grittier style to play their game.”
Still, Tuesday’s 3-1 tight-checking win for Team Red — with all of the game’s goals scored in the last six minutes of action — left the brass with many tough decisions to make.
Chicago Blackhawks draft pick Phillip Danault finally broke the deadlock with 5:40 remaining in the third period, scoring from in the slot for Team Red. But Calgary kid Hunter Shinkaruk quickly got Team White back in it, showing some finish on Red goalie Laurent Brossoit with their side’s only goal.
“I thought I did my best,” said Shinkaruk, who was used sparingly but made the most of his icetime. “I didn’t do too much in the first two periods ... but I thought I picked up my game in the third.”
Team Red pulled ahead shortly after off a point shot from Frank Corrado that sailed by White goalie Malcolm Subban.
But, in this game, it wasn’t about the final score — it was more about who impressed and who didn’t.
Mathew Dumba, a late cut from last year’s camp, definitely turned heads. The Minnesota Wild draft pick looked composed and skated the puck out of trouble when he needed to.
“I was comfortable and as the game went on, I got more comfortable,” said the Red Deer Rebels defenceman. “Everything was happening fast. I feel like I played a solid game, well-rounded, advanced pucks up the ice well and made good passes.
“For sure I want to stand out and have my physical presence shown.”
Near the end of the opening period, Red Team defenceman Griffin Reinhart broke a stick trying to take a slap shot and turned over the puck. However, Dumba saved the day for the Reds and calmly dished the puck out of his zone.
He unleashed his powerful shot in the second period — unfortunately Boone Jenner got in the way — and, when he absorbed a hellacious hit from big white forward Brett Ritchie, he shook it off and jumped right back in the play.
Speaking of Ritchie, a six-foot-four, 218-pounder from the Niagara Ice Dogs, he dominated and was the lone player to score in the first-period shootout — a hard wrister that beat Red goalie Jordan Binnington.
For many, it was about displaying a physical element — but keeping it in check, and not going all-“Brett Connolly” on anyone like last year’s world junior selection intra-squad game. (The Tampa Bay forward, on loan from the NHL, had nailed Moose Jaw Warriors forward Quinton Howden with a questionable hit, during the 2012 camp, knocking him out with a conussion).
But what about Ryan Nugent-Hopkins? The locked-out NHLer was busy trying to find chemistry with left-winger Huberdeau and centre-converted-right winger Mark Scheifele.
“Huberdeau, me, and Scheifele can all play low because we’ve all played centre before,” said Nugent-Hopkins. “A situation like that is not a huge deal.
“We only had a few opportunities tonight, but when we did, we were working the puck really well.”
Coaches shook up that line quickly, however, putting Huberdeau with Halifax Mooseheads superstar Nathan MacKinnon and undrafted 19-year-old JC Lipon of the Kamloops Blazers, and moved up the sublimely skilled Jonathan Drouin.
Nugent-Hopkins, technically playing on enemy territory as a member of the Edmonton Oilers in Calgary, was booed as he attempted a shootout (and missed). He also sealed the deal for Team Red — an empty-netter with 12.9 seconds remaining.
Meanwhile, as expected, the play of 17 year olds MacKinnon and Drouin was out of this world. Moose Jaw Warriors smooth-skating defenceman Morgan Rielly was superb.
It also should be noted that Airdrie native Ty Rattie, Plymouth Whalers forward Tom Wilson, and Sault Ste. Marie’s Ryan Sproul had a lot of decent chances, but couldn’t connect. The returning six veterans including Jenner, Hamilton, and defenceman Scott Harrington, were also excellent.
Yes, Hockey Canada brass were definitely preparing for a sleepless night on Tuesday.
“The coffee’s on,” said Spott, who’ll evaluate his team again today against a collection of CIS players (1:30 p.m.; WinSport). “You saw the parity on that ice. It’s going to be tough.
“It’s easy, obviously, to pick the front-end players, the veteran guys. Now, the challenge is going to be to pick the depth in our lineup.
“It’s going to be a late night and we’re prepared for that.”
ICE CHIPS . . .
Flames forward Mike Cammalleri and Washington defenceman Karl Alzner were guest coaching on Tuesday ... Spott said his club came out uninjured (thankfully) ... First cuts will be made Wednesday with the team decided Thursday following their second game against the CIS all-stars (noon).
