Light is one of important things in photography. Nowadays, lighting has many choices and equipment that makes you easier to take the picture. By many lights that you can choose from, you can simply set up a photography studio and move the lights to get different effects. Below are several steps that you can read to set up photography lighting.

Step 1

Pose your subject where you intend him to be. Set the camera exactly in front of the subject.

Step 2

Prepare a key light on the subject. Supposed that the subject is a person, it should be set at 45 degree angle from the person and enlighten one side on his face. Generally, it should be between 500 and 1000 watts. The key lights itself has several different types. Soft light is diffused as hard light makes spiky shadows on its subject. While high light is bright one as soft light is muted and not bright. Through those two types, the key light can be determined first while you select the exact type as the effect you intend to create. For example, the soft light one is appropriate for the glamor photography.

Step 3

Place a fill light on the subject. The fill light should be more muted and more diffused than the key light chosen. Generally, a fill light is half as bright as it chosen. For example, if it is 1000 watts, the fill light should be chosen is 500 watts. Then, a diffuser can be placed on the fill light or by using a reflector board so a diffused fill light is created. When the budget is tight, another way that can be taken is using a piece of poster board or silver car shade as the reflector. The fill light is set at the opposite side of the subject itself from it. So, when the key light is enlightening, the face of subject is on the right side which means that the fill light should be on the left.

Step 4

Arrange a back light on its subject. Generally the back light should be exact behind the subject but little bit higher than the camera. Finally, the last step that can be taken is creating a radiance of light around the hair of your subject that may help him to stand out against the background itself. The back light should be lighter than the key light and it should be placed at a lower angle. Keep focusing, that it is not too low or it will appear on camera to spoil the shot.

The right photography lighting techniques are what sets great pictures apart from the good and okay. Taking your own digital pictures has soared in popularity with the invention of the mobile phone camera and video. That and the online possibilities of setting yourself up in business make having a digital camera with you at all times a must for many. Here are some photography lighting techniques that photographers use for capturing a variety of shots and moods.
LIGHTING - Obviously, the right lighting techniques will play an important role in the impact of your pictures and the mood you are trying to create. If you took a picture of, say, a polar bear and its cub, one scene when the sun was high around midday and then the same scene in a nice warm evening light, two contrasting pictures would emerge capturing very different moods. Photographing in a harsh light will rarely produce good pictures. Taking pictures when the sun is overhead results in the colour being sapped from the picture or image, giving it a washed-out flat look.
The best light to photograph in is either early morning or in the early evening. This is because light moves towards the warm end of the colour spectrum, making the colours more vibrant, while a more three-dimensional form is created. You will find your pictures and images come to life. It also depends where in the world you are photographing, especially in a very hot or tropical climate where you will find the animals will be far more active at these times, offering you much better scope for interesting pictures. Perfecting your photography lighting techniques is an important asset to your photography toolkit.
DULL LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY - There is nothing more frustrating than to be hanging around and unable to move when your animal has decided to appear from a totally different angle to what you are all geared up for, creating all manner of problems and shadows on the picture. That brings us to why taking digital pictures on a dull day is not such a bad thing. Digital images are able to handle dull light far better than film because of the digital sensor being more light sensitive than film. Of course, if you are in a position to alter the angle on your animals, then shooting while the sun is shining will allow you to use the light to your advantage and hopefully produce some eye-catching mood shots. Perfecting your photography lighting techniques is all part of learning to shoot great wildlife pictures.
CONVENTIONAL LIGHTING - This is what a photographer will try and achieve for all his shots, that is the sun coming from over your shoulder. This kind of shot will produce fabulous detail of your animal's fur or feathers, etc, will have no spoiling shadows and colours will be at their best. If there is a disadvantage, it is because you have no shadow so your images will take on a one-dimensional look as there is less contrast.
BACKLIGHTING - Although conventional lighting is the easy and safe option for producing the "pleasing image," photographers should not fall into this trap and make a point of experimenting with a variety of photography lighting techniques and mood shots. Taking a photo backlit can give you opportunities to capture your very own work of art. Having your subject illuminated or the animal's outline illuminated (called rim-lit) takes on a whole new perspective and can result in stunning effects. If you fell lucky and had perfect lighting, your animal image could easily turn into a two - or three-dimensional looking image, giving your picture more life and character. Real drama can be created from a back-lit picture.
