Photoshop Tut #1- Dusty

Note: Choose a high-quality photo. The better the clarity, the easier it will be to edit the photo. You will also have a lot more options as well as a better result. It does not necessarily have to be B&W. It could be colorful, and you can experiment with different textures. I just preferred it black and white.

I chose a personal photo since I don't really wish to take anyone else's work and alter it. I have plenty of stock of my own.

Numbers with " *** " means that you will have to adjust the brushes/effects to fit YOUR image.

1. New Adjustment Layer: Black & White

***2. Set to specific numbers that highlight your photo best. THIS STEP WILL DEPEND ON YOUR PHOTO. You can be sloppy here. Most important: to highlight the features, deepen shadows, and brighten.

My case:

a. Reds: 80

b. Yellows: 98

c. Greens: 96

d. Cyans: 98

e. Blues: 109

f. Magentas: 174

3. Set this layer to Color Burn

4. New Adjustment Layer: Black & White

5. Set specific numbers that highlight the features of the photo. In this case-EYES. This will be your black and white cover. Make sure you like how the B&W layer looks. Play around with the numbers.

My case:

a. Reds: 70

b. Yellows: 77

c. Greens: 40

d. Cyans: 60

e. Blues: 20

f. Magentas: 80

6. Right click on top layer, Merge Visible

9. From the toolbar choose Burn Tool (looks like a hand) (May be hidden under Dodge Tool or Sponge Tool)

10. Set Brush Size: 143 px (you can set it to whatever size necessary) (Make sure it’s soft edge!) Range to Midtones, Exposure to 26%

11. Start shadowy parts of your photo more contoured. My case: cheek bones, eye makeup, sides of nose, eyebrows.

***12. In the same toolbar, choose Brush Size: 89 Range: Shadows, Exposure: 19%

***13. Edit the shadows. My case: I needed to make the eyes more cat-like. Hence, lots of shading to create elongated eyesahddow.

***14. From toolbar, choose Dodge Tool set at (Shaddows, 63%. ALTER TO FIT YOUR PHOTO) and lighten whichever parts of your photo need some attention to them. My case: eyes. I wanted to make them a bit lighter.

15. New Layer: Paste Texture from here, here, here. ALL CREDIT GOES TO SWIMCHIC.NET FOR THESETEXTURES. For more resources and textures just simply google “scratched Photoshop textures” or “grainy photoshop textures”

a. If texture is too small: hit Ctrl T, stretch the texture to fit your image and hit ‘Enter’. Viola!

b. Choose as many different textures as you like.

16. Set each layer to Screen at 100%

17. You can stop here and save, or you can add a bit of color.

18. IF YOU CHOSE TO ADD COLOR:

a. New Layer, Fill in color (In my case it was #1f074e), Set Screen at 30%

19. Save as jpeg.

I've had some photos that I 'shopped here and there as well as some older ones that I decided to share. These are simply for the enjoyment of scrapbook/photo journal type stuff. I am way too lazy to print them out. (+ I needed to update my blog. Seriously, I am slackin'. Sorry lovelies!)

5 Things I Can't Wait To Participate In-And You Can Too! + More Links

One of my biggest "goals" this summer was to become more adventurous. I am that friend that likes to sit around on a field of grass while the rest of my friends play volleyball. I'm mellow and calm but I do want to become more "outdoorsy" simply because I know the benefits of it-stress relief, exercise, getting out of my comfort zone, etc. As I started looking into new, fun things to part-take, I discovered TONS of great activities that I unfortunately missed out on since they are mostly in the beginning of June or July (in my town. Each activity is different for each city! It may not be too late for you!) Each activity is done in many-many cities across America, (and some are even international) in which case I strongly recommend checking out their websites and reserving a spot for you! So, without further adieu-my personal list of 5 things I want to do next year. (NOTE: This list is subject to change and addition. These are the activities I discovered this summer, and I'm sure there will be tons more that I will stumble on. Hence, there may be a part deux.)

1. The Spartan Race I USA, UK, Canada, Slovakia (Australia, Mexico coming soon.)

Best inspirational video I've seen by far.

Blood, sweat, tears. That pretty much sums it up right. The Spartan Race is a huge obstacle run, ranging from 3k, 8k, 10k and even Death Race (48 hours of non-stop hell. I mean...fun.) According to their website:

Simply, Spartan Race is the world’s leading obstacle race series. It’s an event of pure primitive craziness that you’ll never forget!. . . There is fire, mud, water, barbed wire, and occasionally Hell on Earth.There WILL be obstacles to catch you off guard. Curve balls, so to speak.
Get over it.We’re here to rip you from your comfort zone. If you need a road map for each step of the way, then maybe this race isn’t for you.

Basically, you pay to die. I plan on doing the 3k one which also includes tons of awesome (*twitch) obstacles which I am just so happy to do! I can't wait to be covered in mud and sweat. (I totally regret wanting more adventure Being a hermit crab just sounds so much more appealing.)

2. Dayglow I USA

Fan of electro music and being splattered with paint? ME TOO! Known as "The World’s Largest Paint Party,” and I want in! Night out on the town, tons of neon colored paint, amazing music by a variety of DJs-honestly what more can you ask for? DAYGLOW makes events at cities all across the country I strongly recccomend checking them out, as I've heard superb reviews about 'em. In the mean time, check out "What to do at Dayglow?" for "Do's" and "Dont's" from the veterans.

3. "Celebrate America" Underwear Run+ Aquaphor New York City Triathlon. I New York

If you are insane, you can do the New York Triathlon where you swim 1500m in Hudson River, Bike for 40k, and Jog 10k your way up Manhattan. (What fun!) I on the other hand will participate in the more risque, less death-causing, patriotic "Celebrate America" 1.7 mile undie run! All I have to do now is get super cute Victoria's Secret sports attire, and get my body to look like one of the angels'. Simple enough, eh? I do plan on getting the greasiest, most caloric cheese steak right after the run.

4. The Color Run-"The Happiest Run on Earth" I National USA

Me? Run? No no no. Unless I can get covered in paint! The Color Run, or "The Happiest Run on Earth" is 5 miles of awesome, colorful, healthy fun! It is less focused on competition and more about bringing people closer. You can walk, run, jog, pretend to be an Olympian or whatever floats your boat. The most important thing is that you enjoy yourself! The run takes place in tons of cities, and they constantly bring in new updates. 5. Pick 'something' (berries, fruit, lemons...whatever) I Local

I really want to pick berries, or apples or any sort of fruit where I can enjoy myself, feel like I am back in Ukraine and take awesome pictures. If you wish to participate in something similar, simply Google " pick [strawberries/apples/pears/cherries] near [fill in your area] " Berry pickings usually occur in June or super early July so check up on the location regularly to find out when you can come over to collect the harvest! Enjoy!

I really messed up. I've hurt a person who deserved to be loved instead and I've spent a year trying to fix it. (It's actually even more than a year. But who's counting?) In reality, I know that I have made a crucial mistake and that is immoral and has left a lasting impression on both that person and myself.

Though I have apologized profusely, there seems to be no middle path he and I can take. He is upset. I am upset, and pride gets in the way. It has been a year since we really spoke and when we met up to simply resolve any bruised feelings left, it was a really heavy encounter.

It served as a lesson to me: I can only beat myself up for so long before I stop and focus on me. That sounds selfish, but every person has his or her extent that she or he can go. (I'm not even saying 'willing'. 'Can' is much more powerful.) I was willing to go forever, but I could only wallow for so long. A whole-hearted apology, (or 3 in my case), a polite conversation, and full surrender of openly and strongly expressing my mind later I understood that the best I can do with my life is move on.

I know, this has been the most ambiguous post I've ever made, but it should serve less of a story and more of a lesson. I as a person will make mistakes. I have. The best I can do, is to fix them to the best of my ability, going out of my way even. However, after some time (or a lot of it), I must succumb to the reality that some things cannot be changed. It's best to simply learn from my mistakes rather than dwell on them.

Love yourself. Learn from your mistakes. Move on.

My friend and I decided to be adorable and cook together. We are no master chefs though, so the food was simple and to the point-steak (covered with the most expensive spices called Le Salt and Le Pepper. Rare stuff.), garlic bread, cooked vegetables, and pasta. This dinner is also called "I know how to make pasta and just add some meat to it" dish. Next feat of our culinary skills? Ramen noodles.

So, this week was interesting. I got a new job, and I am now a professional, $9.25 an hour, adult working girl. If that sounds like something out of an "adult finder" ad, I apologize. That was not supposed to take such a drastic turn. I've also been super busy with catching up on sleep. I've noticed that most of my photos include food. I've been busy for the past several weeks simply sitting on my little mustardy sofa, watching all the episodes of Dexter. Oh the shame! (It's actually a superb show. Do check it out soon!) However, I have come across some interesting things that caught my eye. Let's begin!

1. If you are as addicted to facebook as I am, but must not seem unprofessional at work by browsing through your newsfeed, I've got a potential solution for you! HardlyWork.in lets you access your facebook account and placing it into a neat, professional, sweet looking spreadsheet! Check out more screen shots here.

2. Sleep is extremely important, but how much does it affect your health? Leave it to Allure and Glamour to investigate! Did you know you actually can lose some pounds by simply getting 7.5 hours of sleep each night? Read on!

4. I've spent a lot of hours lately on thebeautydepartment.com, much more than I care to admit. Their posts are so sweet and the photographic tutorials always keep me coming back. 5. Obviously, not all of us are born with the innate knowledge of the financial vernacular. Nor do any of us simply understand the world of dollars and cents. It takes time and some guidance. For those of us who have not graduated a business school, where do we learn this financial babble?

It's a program that includes a day-by-day exercise routine, diet plan (men and women), tips and comments. Day.By.Day. If there is ever a time and an amazing tool...this is it. Mark it in your calendars and do it with me!

5 Things I Learned on Week 1

1. I must literally work my a** off.
With hot weather come frequent visits to the beach. With those, comes the satisfaction of girls running around in small pieces of fabric with cameras flashing everywhere. I saw my photos. Didn't like them. At all. I resumed my membership at the gym and started to pay much more attention to cardio. Before, I would ignore it mostly since I'm not crazy about the idea of huffing, puffing, sweating, and jogging for 20 minutes straight as well as having my face radiate heat equating to nothing less than solar power itself. Did I mention I turn beat red? Yeah , you try flirting with hot guys at the gym when your face resembles the inside of a grapefruit. But back to cardio- I'm bad at it. Fortunately, after the first week and a couple miles on the elliptical, along with some sick beats and a good boxing match on ESPN, I managed to actually run a mile on a treadmill. (Inner applause). I now record my data down and have run 6 miles total this week. (More than I ever have...or wanted to.) I found several home workout websites, videos and helpful sources such as:

Blogilates Videos, recipes, exercises that actually work as well as a super quirky and fun instructor!
Body Rock Somewhat more challenging than blogilates (to a certain extent only) but is a great resource for folks who want to achieve a sculpt, toned, carved look.
MyWayFit If you are a Russian speaker, these will be peculiarly helpful as they are in Russian. However, you don't have to understand them to keep up!

2. Saving money sucks. And I'm bad at it.

Budgeting is not easy, nor is it all that much fun seeing that I wasted about 40% of my paycheck on frivoulous things like eating out. I should really be focusing my assets on things that will last for a long time such as a pretty, shiny, slick, chick, (arrrghhhhhhh I CAN'T WAIT TO GET ONE) MacBook Pro. However, since I am constantly busy (work, internship, catching up on 6 seasons of Dexter), its much more difficult for me to stay organized with my purchases and expenses. To make my life easier, I signed up for a Virtual Wallet account with my local PNC bank which has superb features like actually showing me what I bought seconds after I bought it! This is really important for me since I despise waiting until the end of the month to see how I spent my money. It also has a budget tool built in. 3. I can read Allure in 30 min, but it takes a serious push to read a book.
I love books. And I love to read. But the Internet beckons and the sound is so sweet. I know that in order to educate, challenge and push myself I must simply read. It's a good hobby as well as a stress-reliever. Subsequently it is the way I pick up new vocabulary (since I am Ukrainian and English is not my native language, I can get all the vocab lessons I can get). I simply must come up with a plan, or a chart of some sort to organize my reading since I am running behind on my reading goal.

4. Two videos a week? Lies.

So far, it has been two weeks since I made a video. The goal was two per week. I have tons of ideas and plans set in motion- written out, planned, thought out. They just need to be recorded. And edited. And blogged. It's just like with books: if I get the ball rolling, I won't stop. I just need the push. (Seeing that it's already June 25th helps. Time flies. I stand still.)

5. I must try new things more often! (Like keeping a schedule. Or following up with goals.)

Simply put, I don't explore enough! I wanted to try new things like cook more, or explore new places or simply do more things. I've done little. I'm just not that adventurous but it is a skill I wish to hone. Stand by for further thoughts.

After a surge of inspiration and motivation, I've sat down and composed some of my summer goals...at 1:57 am. The goals are as follows.

I talked about most of my goals in the video, but there are many that I keep adding. These goals are for the summer, so they are short-term. I strongly recommend setting a few of your own-both short term and long term.

I've gotten down to making my budget and it looks ridiculous. Most of my money goes to food and now I am paying much more attention to how much money I spend as well as where that cash goes to. I've also realized that many of my goals are intertwined. For example, the less money I spend on food (bad, icky, restaurant food that I can easily make at home), the less weight I gain. Bam! Two birds with one stone!

If you wish to set goals of your own, I suggest

Set extremely specific goals. Instead of saying "Read some more book over the summer", say "Read 12 books by August 31,2012"
Set realistic goals-still above your standard, but realistic nonetheless.
Have strong reasons for goals. You will need to have something to go back to for why you are putting yourself through hell to accomplish this goal.
Document your process! This way, you can see exactly where you are on your path towards the completion of a goal. (Pictures for weight loss, excel spreadsheets for spending, wrappers of Starburst to live in shame later.)

10:00 am Visit to the Park

The "what am I doing here in this weather" face

I decided to go to the park. Sure, it was 10 in the morning, and raining, and the park looked eerie but it was honestly a really great experience. I had some G-Eazy blasting the entire time on my iPod as well as other Hip-Hop mixed in with retro, vintage beats.

I decided to be a kid and climb trees. (Fallen, horizontal ones of course.)

I'm not big on walking and nature but I was quite inspired. It was icky weather but there were still people outside, jogging, walking, playing with their pets and even accompanying a loved one on an adorable morning trip. There was even a fella doing crunches on the grass-wet, sticky, gross grass. I did 15 squats as a mini homage.

There were also a bunch of different animals. Today, I stumbled on geese and some adorable little baby geese! How cute! (Oh yes, I did grow up in a village so this should be second nature to me but they are still so adorable.)

I hope one day I will have someone by my side like these two. Very sweet couple. He held the umbrella while she went on about her thoughts and so forth. Note how the umbrella is tilted above her head-clearly protecting her with care and love. Awh. On a different note, the best thing two people can do is have a date at the park. It's relaxing, you get to talk, there is lots to see and converse about.

The park is also amazingly relaxing and soothing. A nice, brisk walk with the tempo of the music is all I really needed after a long week but I do think I need to visit it with a nice book or jogging shoes. Now go! Go make your own adventure at the park!

2. So, in my desire to become more fit I looked through some places for better, fresher exercises that would target some problematic areas. It's probably better to do a full body workout but I hate those. So, if you're like me and you really want to get your obliques looking better, or shoulders, or other specific part of your body in a better shape, an interactive website called freetrainers.com designed a tool just for that! It gives you exercises for the part you choose to target, as well as demonstrations. The website also has meal and diet plans they are currently working on, so stay tuned!

3. If you love self improvment, a bit of psychology, and a guide to life, I suggest checking out www.marcandangel.com which offer much useful advice to articles anywhere from " 12 Universal Skills You Need to Succeed at Anything" to "40 Questions Everyone is Afraid to Ask". What makes this blog special is that it is (a) SUPER thought provoking and (b) authors put in tons of resources for the readers including outside sources to financial and educational websites as well as suggested, highly rated books. Making myself laugh cause I'm so hillarious.
Friend came over. Made me food cause I'm a terrible cook. Pasta and chicken!

I recorded 3 different videos today, two of them are makeup looks. This is the first one. Woot. I will edit all of them tonight most likely, and post them soon. I feel like I'm being quite productive lately.
