<itunes:subtitle>This episode author and premium motorcycle tour guide Ron Ayres joins us for a discussion of world touring. Ghetto Garage returns with a toxic tale, and the Wrench Wench does what she does.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>On this installment of Road Show we have a chat with Ron Ayres of Ayres Adventures.Ayers has one of those great stories, the kind we love here at Road Show of lives being transformed by motorcycling. In his book, Against the Wind, he skillfully recounts the tale of of a high-power, high pressure executive who, after a couple of missing the run a couple of times due to work conflict, runs the Iron Butt rally in 1995. Although it is his first attempt, he scores well, gets hooked, and after retiring in 1999 formed his tour company. Now operating off of several continents Ayres is quick to point out that, although some of his destinations represent the holy grails of adventure motorcycling, his tours are of the premium variety meaning mostly pavement and five star hotels.Having just returned from a 14,000 mile scouting trip in the Ukon and Alaska Ayres continues to expand his horizons and makes new opportunities for his customers.-------------Also in this edition.... A shout out to my friends at the Willard Cantina and Cafe who served me such a great meal. Look for a full review in the next edition of Road Show Magazine.========================AAAAAAAAAAAAAnnnnnnd finally, the return of Ghetto Garage and the weirdest wrenching day ever.</itunes:summary>

"Two Wheels Through Terror" as well as other projects that were pending at the time.</itunes:subtitle>

I have to admit that I was intimidated to meet The Great Glen Heggstad.
At the time I was working for another magazine and the editor had warned me against hero worship, but I fell prey to it nevertheless.
I HAD read his book several times already and found it extraordinary.
I hope Glen won't mind, but since he has this excerpt freely available on his websit I can't imagine he would mind me re-publishing it here.

In 2006, during the early days of Road Show, we had the pleasure of first becoming acquainted with Grant and Susan Johnson. They are the creators of the world travel website Horizon's UnlimitedI have been impressed from our first talk about how positive they are. Mr. Johnson is particularly upbeat. Even when being held at gunpoint he remained nonplussed. His attitude is you just treat everybody like your next door neighbor and everything will be fine.Just recently I had the chance to speak briefly to Johnson from Horizon's. Unlimited home base in London and asked him if world events, particularly the rise in energy prices was having an effect on world motorcycle travel. I was surprised when he answered no.We told me that, overall, the cost of an around the world motorcycle trip had increase 10-15%. I do not know how he calculated that but he should know.Grant Johnson astride the custom made "Beemergabo."Also check out the Johnson's how to video The Achievable Dream</itunes:summary>

Saving you the technical details, what the octane number is gas actually refers to is its "resistance" to explosion. Now trust me, this is a desirable thing. In high-compression engines there is a tendency for something called "detonation." Detonation is the spontaneous explosion of unburned fuel/air mixture after the actual spark event setting up a secondary shock wave inside the cylinder which slings the piston around in an undesirable manner causing knocking and ultimately damage to the edge of the piston crown and the rings.

A higher octane gas will explode more evenly combating this tendency. It will not, however, add any umph to your engine.</itunes:subtitle>

Along the way he totaled his bike hitting a deer, spent time working at
the Quantum Learning Center and overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to eventually arrive in
Scottsdale, AZ in November. I recently sat down with Silkosky at a
Scottsdale Starbucks where he outlined his journey. Part one of which
is presented in the latest Road Show Podcast.

<itunes:subtitle>In this podcast we present part 2 of of the Road Show interview with John Sulkosky. Who, although striken with cerebral palsy spent the summer of 2008 making a 15,000 mile trek around the U.S on a custom motorcycle.</itunes:subtitle>
<itunes:summary>On this episode of Road Sulkosky. Oddly, for travelers nowadays
Silkosky does not blog and rarely e-mails. Unfortunately that makes our
postings a little incomplete because we do not, at this point, have any
pictures to share with you. To the best of my knowledge Sulkosky is now
back in Alaska spending the holidays with his family and has promised
to send me a photo CD with images of his travels. Even though the story
is told very well in the audio portion it is hard to get an idea of the
extent of his journey. I will be adding more to it as the content
becomes available. In the meantime you can check out the following link.Kind of gives you a feel for the enormity of the journey. On another note...Thanks to my friend Grant Johnson at http://www.horizonsunlimited.com I was recently put in contact with one Simon Gandolfi who will be
featured on an upcoming podcast. Until then, check out his blog and
links at.http://simongandolfi.blogspot.com/
Things have also been very busy here at Road Show Central. With me
slugging it out at MMI and the Wrench Wench helping to make ends meet
at her job it has been hectic. Of course the holidays have had
something to do with that as well.Speaking of MMI (Motorcycle Mechanics Institute) that is one strange place and I am still not quite sure what to make of it.More about that HERE.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:subtitle>Review of the new Achievable Dream video</itunes:subtitle>
      <itunes:summary>
Grant and Susan Johnson of Horizons Unlimited have been regular guests on Road Show for the past three years and have always provided great information and interesting conversation. As we return from our hiatus to start season four of Road Show it seemed only natural to have them as our first guests. As fortune would have it, the return of Road Show coincided with the release of the new "The Achievable Dream" DVD. Which, I found out in a recent conversation with Johnson, is the first in a 4 DVD set.

Having had an opportunity to view the entire DVD I can honestly say it is inspiring and extremely informative. It also radiates authenticity as Grant and Susan have been living the material they present for 20 years now. In this new new version of the video the the the down-to-earth and factual nature of the material is reinforced by the inclusion of interviews and information from a number of different motorcycle travels. The Achievable Dream is also very easy to watch. Not only are the production values of professional quality, but the organization of the material make it a pleasurable viewing experience. The different types of information are broken up into easily digestable bites which, for this reviewer who has the attention span of a flea, was extremely helpful.

What are some of the questions that are answered in the video are.

1) Will I be safe?

2) What do I need to know?

3) Which bike should I take, and what gear do I need?

4) What the heck is a carnet anyway?

For more information on this video and the rest in the series click here.

Given all that good stuff, the truly amazing part about the video and Horizons Unlimited is the unflinchingly positive attitude about EVERYTHING. Given the state of the world economy and the dire warnings about traveling to other countries, where most people see danger and doom in these scenarios, Johnson and his crew see only opportunity.

If you are looking for information on long distance motorcycle travel Horizons Unlimited should be your first stop. If you want to get REALLY fired up or just share in the adventure vicariously buy the video. I assure you you will not be disappointed.

If you want to get a little more involved join start a Horizons Unlimited Motorcycle Travel Community

Road Show just joined the one in Phoenix, AZ and we will keep you posted on how that works out.

One final thing. With every DVD purchase you also get a high-quality/high-visibility sticker. "What's the big deal about a sticker?" you may be asking. Well, I know from personal experience these things are lucky. When I crashed my beloved 1100RT in 2007 it was utterly destroyed, except for the RH pannier which sported an Horizons Unlimited sticker which was untouched. Need I say more?

Thank you for taking the time to listen to the podcast and read this review. I will leave you with the words of Grant Johnson himself.

"See you on the road, someday"

Aryes Adventures

Morroco, Portugal, Spain, Greece, Italy, the list is too long to recite and the names all conjur up images of romance and adventure. This is but a short list of the places you can visit on an Ayres Adventure tour. In just a few short years, and almost by mistake, Ron Ayres has built one of the leading guided adventure touring companies in the world. He is even recognized as an official travel partner of BMW motorad.
Ayres has a lifelong passion for motorcycling, but spent most of his adult life in the pressure cooker of the 80 hour a week traveling executive. Overseeing operations in far-flung operations around the globe and motorcycling whenever he could. One cherished dream continued to haunt him, the fableld Iron Butt Rally,
Several years running he submitted his application, was accepted, only to have to withdraw in the 11th hour each time due to business pressure. Finally, in 1995 he dream came true and he found himself motoring away from the starting line. He finished a highly respectable sixth place and recounted the tale in his book "Against The Wind."
After his successful finish in the 1995 Iron Butt Ayres returned to the business world until finally taking an early retirement in 1999. With no particular plans in the works he grew restless and two years later founded Ayres Adventures. His extensive experience in working in other countries and his well regarded status in the industry has helped make his company one of the most successful world-wide touring companies in just a few years.
In addition to his other accomplishments Ayers has been a member of the Iron Butt Association since 1995 has completed two Iron Butt Rallies he also continues to participate in long distance writing events, Whitehorse Press has published three of his books that deal with the subject of long-distance touring and endurance riding.

Manny Macias in east dyno room.
This episode I was honored to sit down with former race mechanic and current MMI instructor Manny Macias. During his 10 year career as a professional race technician Macias worked with several different teams, but associates himself most with Yoshimura Suzuki. The interview took place on the fly between second and third shifts in a Clinic 9 classroom at the Phoenix campus.
Macias was such a great interview subject that we decided to just play the interview and dispense with Ghetto Garage this time out. But fear not Ghetto Garage fans, Rupert Piston, who also co-hosted the show, has some great ideas for upcoming episodes. ....AND....we would like YOUR INPUT! Any topic you would like to see covered in the GG segment please e-mail us at.
info@roadshowmagazine.com

BTW.............................................................................................
Thank you to Rupert Piston of cartoonthunder.com to join me as co-host and add his valuable voice to the show.
Rupert also hipped us to the Gypsy Motorcycle Tour Classic 2009 in Tres Pinos, CA. near his home in in Hollister, CA. If you goto the rally, you will most likely run into him there.
More info and articles on our hompage: Road Show Magazine.
Thanks!

<itunes:summary>After months of e-mail exchanges, sometimes with long breaks in between due to our travel schedules, RoadShow finally hooked up via Skype with Gaurav Jani. Because of the time difference between Mumbai, India and the south western US Jani had to stay up late and the BMWeerman had to get his cognitive functions jumpstarted early on a weekend morning.
It was all worth it though, Jani turned out to be an interesting and insightful guest and seemed genuinely grateful for whatever input Rupert Piston and myself provided. As I pointed out in an earlier post and then mentioned to Jani during our talk, the thing that most impressed me about the films is the emphasis on stillness. Something I think we sorely lack in our Western style of daily bread winning and recreating.

The Wild One Lives on...with a little help from his friends
The legend of The Wild One looks like it will live on after being removed from its traditional location in Hollister, CA to the nearby fairgrounds in Bolado Park. Our good friend and current co-host Rupert Piston is right in the middle of the action this year as a participant, promoter and also the creative force behind their redesigned website which can be seen below.

This episode, our intrepid west coast reporter, Rupert Piston, of cartoonthunder.com, has an extremely interesting conversation with Charisse Tyson owner of Johnny's Bar and Grill in Hollister, CA. Johnny's has a rich history as a biker bar going back over 60 years.
As a long time resident of Hollister Piston has a great deal of knowledge about the subject and the history goes even deeper when told by Tyson.
If you have any interest in this history of motorcycling this is a must hear!

Johnny's Bar and Grill as it looks today.
http://www.johnnysbarandgrill.com/
Established in 1946Johnny Matalich bought The New Deal in 1946 and changed the name to Johnny's Bar & Grill. Farmers and business men packed the place for the greasy cheese burgers and steaks at lunch time and afternoons were quite lively. The hard working farmers and cowboys loved the comradery they found at Johnny's and sixty five years and roughly ten owners later it still exists. In 1947 Wino Willie and his Boozefighter's came to Hollister for the Fourth of July Gypsy Tour Races. They cut loose in town after the races and one the guys drove through Johnny's on his motorcycle. They were a little rowdy but the mayhem that was depicted in the July 1947 issue of Life Magazine exaggerated the event. The article inspired the 1953 movie The Wild Ones with Marlon Brando and Lee Marvin. The Boozefighters have made it a point to come back to Johnny's for the fourth of July weekend ever since. I bought the bar in December of 1995. I've met a lot of great people and it's been a wild ride.
