What Do People REALLY Want?

I ask this question often because as a publicist working with authors, speakers, business owners and the like – they all yearn for something. Besides money…. it goes deeper than that.

I have a theory, which I test by people watching and social media observations, that people basically want four things:

1. Be known. They want fame. They want “rock star” fame actually. Most people dream of being recognized on the street and having fans ask for their autograph. They want their pictures on the front of magazines (not Tabloids) and seen on TV – and heard on radio. They secretly dream of being so famous that they can go anywhere and get “star” treatment.

2. Be rich from one “big” thing. We all need money to survive – that’s a given. But the driving force behind most people is to be RICH doing what they love. Everyone wants to be paid well by having their “idea, product, service” so in demand that it makes them stupid rich. Like Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg, where they don’t EVER have to worry about money. Cash flow is always positive and their barns are always overflowing. Most business owners strive daily to be so wealthy that they don’t have to “work.” Only when they choose to.

3. Be powerful and have influence. People want the kind of power where they move “to the front of the line” and be allowed in VIP places because of their status. People hunger for the kind of power where they can set trends and have their words quoted often in newspapers and magazines. Most want the “thought leader” position. Kinda like Seth Godin. He’s an author/blogger that speaks on marketing. And just about anything he says is “gold” and is retweeted hundreds and hundreds of time. Basically, just his random thoughts – but they are weighted by the world as REMARKABLE. Now that’s power. He can command a bunch a money to speak too by the way.

4. Have the “Good” life. People want cash, cars and a career that esteems them to “rock star rich” category. People want the easy life. They want fun. They want favor. They want freedom. The Good Life is filled with good friends too. People who love them. People also want health and beauty. The Good life looks a certain way. It looks like “Red Carpet” everyday. People who want the Good Life may appear vain or shallow – but really all they want is to look good, feel good and have good people around them to affirm them.

Yes, basically people want (no, need) public AFFIRMATION. Now, this is different from being “known” or having power/influence. Affirmation is really having people like you and speak will of you. People want to be heard, recognized and seen in positive light. It’s almost like being high school. People want to fit in and be liked – or at least thought well of. You’d think adults would grow out of this – nope. Take a look at social media – it’s like a popularity contest. People striving to be seen, heard, acknowledged – and given a “thumbs up.”

WOW. People want to be “liked” so badddddddddd. More like Junior High instead of high school.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There is nothing WRONG with wanting to be known, rich, have power, have the good life and have people like you and affirm you.

What’s crazy is wanting it – and NOT willing to work for it!!!

I love the saying, “You see my glory, but you don’t know my story.” People who have all the above paid some dues. The bigger the success – the more sacrifices they had to make.

An “overnight” success usually takes about ten years.

So, what does it require in order to be a SUPER STAR:

1. Talent or at least passion

2. Courage. To be brave and not CARE about what people say or think.

3. Commitment. To be willing to sacrifice some sleep, some money and more to make it.

4. Discipline. You want the “easy, fun” life but you can’t be lazy and undisciplined. You’ll never get there.

5. Faith. You have to have an unwavering faith and belief in GOD. Depending on God is really the key to success. He is the Creator and if you follow His road map, success is guaranteed.

6. Education. You have to have information in order to live life on the next level. Either you learn from school or from self-study methods. Most successful people are AVID readers.

7. Support. Having a loving support system is key. Whether it is your family or a BFF like Oprah’s Gayle. Having several key people in your corner is all that is needed to propel most. (Could this be why theCoaching industry is booming?)

8. Sales skills. Yes, you must have GREAT sales ability and not afraid to speak and put yourself out there! Be masterful at networking and marketing. This will take you to the head of the class every time.

So, what do people really want: To Be a Superstar! Hey, it is possible – especially if you are willing to do the work and not just wishing and wanting. Do something.

Hope is patient expectation and eager anticipation.

Not excitement. Even though we are excited when we hope. In Proverbs 10:28, it says “The hopes of the godly result in happiness…” But excitement can waver. Hope is to be placed in God’s unchanging hand. We are to completely rely and depend on Him. And hope gives us courage (Job 11:18) so that we are not afraid, worrying or fretting about things out of our control.

Now, I know that true hope is: complete assurance of victory through God. In Romans, it says, “…Hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we HOPE for what we do not yet have, we wait patiently for it.”

RISE. You have HOPE. Believe.

Prologue

In the revolutionary disciple’s prayer Jesus offered in this passage, He not only gave them an outline of what to pray for daily—a starting place for consistently knocking on the door of heaven—but also the means of transforming their own minds from men and women trapped in a world of doubt, oppression, and failure into a mind-set of heaven: one of faith, provision, and overcoming.

Part One—The Big Picture

1 The Great Paradigm Shift

As members of His family, we have the right to go to our Father and ask for His plans, strategies, and resources to fulfill our mission, assignments, and purpose upon the earth. Prayer is the conduit that not only reveals the will of God for our individual lives but also helps make us the people we need to be to do the impossible on the earth. It’s time to plug into that power like we never have before.

2 First Things First

When you are in boot camp, they put obstacles in your path and tell you to overcome them—if you do, they give you bigger ones; if you don’t, they send you back to the end of the line to start over again. As God recruits us and begins to work within us for our growth, there is a similar series of obstacle courses for us to overcome in prayer.

3 What Should Be

Prayer is the most powerful place of spiritual growth. Sitting in church under good teaching is a wonderful thing, and applying the principles learned there is life transforming, but if you want to get to know God, your pastor can’t do it for you. You have to take Jesus up on His invitation to come hang out. You have to spend time with your physical eyes closed and your spiritual eyes open, letting Jesus show you what He really wants for you and the plans He has for you to impact your world. These are where we are handed the keys to His kingdom.

4 Mission: Impossible

As we persevere in this prayer, as the work of prayer finds its completion, we experience the answer: the grace and authority needed to overcome the difficulty floods like morning light into our spirits and souls. The answer comes in our hearts and we know without doubt it is taken care of, even if that answer is not yet manifested in the natural world.

Part Two—Praying Heaven Down

5 Enough

If you want to check a person’s level of commitment and spirituality, the easiest place to look is in four areas: how they manage their daily calendar, their finances, their relationships, and their destiny. These four areas make up the difference between a truly rich life and a life that is in spiritual poverty.

6 Freedom for All

If we have done the full work in our most intimate relationships, it is easier for other relationships to be all the more transparent and rewarding. It is much more effective to join in purpose with others for our work, social outreaches, or spreading of God’s kingdom than to constantly be competing with each

other. This is what the kingdom of God is all about. Proactive forgiveness, in practice, after all, looks a lot like love.

7 This Day I Will

Today has a place in eternity that no other day can take. There are things God has set for you to accomplish this day, and there are things the devil has appointed for you to be distracted by. What we do with today matters, not only for ourselves but also for those God has appointed for our lives to touch. Satan, on the other hand, would like to sideline us permanently, derail the will of God, and interfere with the formation of His kingdom.

8 Victory!

Being all God has called you to be begins and ends in prayer. It is in hearing from heaven—plugging into the big conversation—that God’s will for the earth today will be communicated to His people and put into action. I choose to celebrate his birth. He was born August 29, 1958.
He graced the world 50 years with his God-given gifts and for that I am grateful.

Below is my favorite song by the "Jackson 5" - this was the song that made me say, "Oh, day, I'm going to marry Michael Jackson. On "I'll be there," I just KNEW his was singing to me! I was always looking over my shoulder for MJ.

Lately I’ve been running. I knew my life was getting in a hectic pace when I got my daily nourishment from “The Runner’s Bible: Spiritual Guidance for People on the Run.” I grabbed it off the shelf and threw it in my briefcase. “I’ll read a few scriptures it at my desk before I get started with my day at work,” is my logic.

Yeah right. I’ve been pacing myself on roller blades….my feet don’t seem to move fast enough. Is it just me or has the notch on the dial of time been turned up. Everything is moving faster and everyone wants stuff quicker!

We are all overloaded in this information age – at work and at home. Too much information can be distracting and we lose focus of what really matters. We all want to accountable and answer every piece of mail, voicemail and email but God is saying to put some of the messages on hold and get a hold of HIS message.

In the world we can be busy, frustrated and live very complicated lives. But God calls us to seek first HIS kingdom and all that we need will be given to us. When we are led by the Spirit of God, He will give us the grace, energy and time to do all that is required.

If we don’t open every email or answer every voice mail, God will redeem us. I live by the rule – if I didn’t get to it today, if it’s really important, they’ll call back. Some things are just not that deep. Don’t fret.

When I set my priorities according to what God wants – not by the schedules of others – I find I’m truly content. Be still and listen to where God is leading you. He will not let you stumble or fall. His grace is sufficient.

Innovation. Creativity. Solution-drive strategies. Answers to issues. This is what people pay big money for. If you have an idea and put some action behind it – it can make you a millionaire. That’s the truth. Just look at history: Walt Disney, Henry Ford, Madam C. Walker to Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey and Mark Zuckerberg.

Even on a job, you are rewarded with promotions and raises for having good ideas. But how do you get the creative juices running and revved up – especially in this economy.

Well, here are five tips to get you inspired and fired up:

Read. I am a confessed bookaholic. I am usually reading about 3 or 4 books at the same time. Pulling out bits of inspiration from all. But even if you’re not a “book” person – read magazines. Subscribe to the ones that speak to what you’re passionate about. There is nothing like a good magazine where every page is filled with fresh new content that is gets you excited. The other thing that is sure to get you stirred up are online magazines, blogs and even some emails. Don’t ever get “overwhelmed” by information. It is the key to your creativity. Learn how to manage your emails and take time to read the RSS feeds of your blog subscriptions. Become an expert at scanning and hunting for information that may be the link to your next BIG IDEA.
Move. Yes, get up. Exercise. Walk. Change your routine if you do exercise. Quit being boring. Take a dance class, do yoga or go swimming. Physical activities are great way send signals to the brain. Ever heard of the “runners high?” Those that run typically are inspired when they’re done because they have just released nature’s “feel good” drug to their brain. And the better you FEEL, the more creative you will become. Who ever had a GOOD idea, when they’re feeling BAD? So get up and move your body. Laziness drains you. Movement fuels you.
Clean. You say, “yuck” but this can be very therapeutic and you’ll be amazed at the amount of energy that it releases because you’re putting things back in order. When you are organized – you will open up some space in your mind. An organized person feels the leisure (not stress) to find solutions to problems and answers to issues because they can think clearly. Clarity is a key to creativity. The more you “clear the deck” the more you can think without distractions. When your surroundings are clean, orderly and serene, you spark the ignition for innovation. No one can really think in a bunch of mess! Order leads to creativity.
Visit. But not just anyone. Make a coffee-date with the most optimistic person you know. Vibe with a friend who always sees the glass half full. Go to a convention full of folks who are about business. Look online for a conference that speaks to your purpose. Or sit in on some webinars, teleseminars where you can hear the energy of the speakers sharing their passion. You must love learning. It is a way to push “reset” on a stale brain and expand your mental capacity.
Change. Get an eyeful of new scenery. Go site seeing. Take off and go to a museum or just go on a long drive. Fully take in the atmosphere and learn to enjoy the small things in life. This is a surefire way to inspire you and take away doldrums. If you can take a vacation to an exotic place, go for it. Quit going to the same old place doing the same old thing. Enough of Disney. Go overseas or go to the Grand Canyon. See different. Be different. Get different results.

Finally, don’t forget to get quiet and really focus. In this information age where everything is moving at rapid pace, it’s important to unplug once in a while with a notebook and pen. Just doddle and let your thought wander and write down what you hear your inner voice telling you to do.

Your Faith is Really All You Have to Help Get You Through. Have Courage

When you really, really, know and have an unshakable faith, you can receive a bad report and just look at it and not be moved because you have a revelation that God is with you.

It doesn’t make sense in the natural but God operates in the supernatural. When you know that you know God is on your side, you will have a blessed assurance through any trial.

You will have the courage to run toward your giant.

David took out his sling and shot a stone that toppled and killed Goliath. David then reached for his sword and cut off Goliath’s head. This was David’s evidence to himself and others that the divine supernatural favor of God killed this giant. This was David’s faith extender. It reminded him that the Lord is mighty and great.

When you deposit your trust in God, you too become bold as a lion. (Proverbs 28:1).

When we walk by faith, we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37). We can’t explain it by logic or reason. We just know that if we believe all things are possible.

No matter how broke you may be, or how depressed or how sick, when you get a revelation of the promises of God, you just know God is working out for your good…here and now. Faith is NOW. (Hebrews 11:1).

There are three types of people in this world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened.

As a PR coach and Social Media Strategist, I see marketing trends. You too probably can see that things are changing fast. Social media marketing is not going away and it is important to understand what's changing and why.

Of course, you don't want to spend a ton of time looking for the right information - and spinning your wheels only to find you've just spent a lot of money with NO return.

As you know, my heart is help authors with their PR and marketing - especially Christian authors and ministries. So, let me say this in love: It's time to MOVE with the times.

Let me be blunt - God put the tools here for you to use. YOU have to learn to use them - and take action. Just praying and hoping you'll be a success will not get you success. Faith without works is DEAD!

The train has left the station. And many did not jump on. So they are getting left behind. People are not fulfilling their mission, their destiny - because they are not using the tools set before them. And many are too cheap to invest in any training.

Our company can help you get going. We can coach you. But we can not change mindsets.

What kind of mindsets?

People who:

1. Want something for nothing

2. Think that God will do everything for them

3. Don't think it "takes all that internet stuff" to be successful

4. Look at others and envy their success not knowing the price they paid

5. Would rather be entertained than educated

6. Make excuses and blame others for their problems

7. Are not disciplined enough to stick with an idea long enough to bring it to fruition

8. Can't seem to "press" in when under pressure

9. Go through life reacting to circumstances instead of being proactive about their success

10. Want to win - but have not committed to really pay attention to trends, leaders and what other coaches/mentors advise them to do

You either want success and work for it - and get it. Or you wish for success and are doomed to fail. The choice is yours.

What's so sad, some people don't even know that they don't know. All they know is that they are broke, off focus, depressed and jealous - which keeps MESS going on in their lives instead of SUCCESS.

And then there are some folks that would rather spend money on another pair of shoes versus a seminar. Ouch.

Detroit, which has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country, the highest foreclosures, the largest percentage of businesses going out of business and one of the worst crime rates and school systems in the country - is experiencing another blow - THE DIGITAL DIVIDE.

Either you can become a creator of content - and control your destiny. Or you can be a consumer of content and have other's control you. Again, the choice is yours.

Don't be destroyed by lack of knowledge. Fight back. Get up.
Quit being cheap. Stop being lazy.
Learn to say no to silly stuff and show up to the stuff that will STRETCH YOU.
Make some sacrifices for your FUTURE.

I've been at a couple of key social media events: Future Midwest and Ignite Detroit. I've spoken at another event with Google and Hubspot. Major money in the room. No recession there. And not many African Americans.

Why? Are so many of us just content with mediocre? Are we that out of the loop when it comes to technology and social media? Is it that we are not curious - and consequently opportunities are passing us by?

You know what insanity is? Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Time for a change. Time to step out of your comfort zone. Time to learn some new things. Time to make the shift.
