All Things New

One evening, as I sat down on the hand-me-down couch my parents had given me years ago, I propped my feet up on my hand-me-down coffee table, began watching my hand-me-down television, and I thought to myself…”oh how fabulous it would be to have new living room décor just like these gorgeous rooms I keep pinning on Pinterest”….then reality set in… my single-mother, thrift store budget wouldn’t quite allow such decadence. I may be able to swing a couple of cans of paint but even that would be a stretch. But I was bored, and sadly my hands and mind don’t stay idle long. And so it began…my newfound obsession to revamp my hand-me-downs in attempt to turn drab into fab!

I started with my coffee table. Most of the coffee tables I found in furniture stores were going to set me back a couple hundred dollars or more. What I wanted had to be just right…no glass, smaller in size, and I preferred it to be round. I love tables that are round. Esthetically they arrange nicely and their size isn't so demanding that they take up space in small areas. For me, small is ideal with the close quarters of my couch and oversized chair. Frustrated by not finding the "perfect" table, I realized that the more I looked, the more I compared them all to what I already had. I was quite fond of my coffee table really... Not only because of it's size and shape but mainly because it belonged to my grandparents, which added sentimental value that I couldn't seem to part with. Needless to say, I needed to find a way to dress it up all while staying within my budget…which wasn’t $100.00!

A trip to Joanne Fabrics and Home Depot, with a goal to restore life back into my coffee table, started a chain reaction of home decorating ideas and quite honestly a painting frenzy! I posted my “Thursday evening project” before and after pictures on my Facebook page and the crowds went wild. Funny how a simple “atta girl” could spark the fire that's been fueling this train!

Before

Ta-da!!!

The following weekend I once again found myself in “restoration” mode but this time I ended up in my favorite store…Goodwill!! ;) I know some people cringe at the thought of second-hand anything but not this girl! The old adage of “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” stands very true for me. I love to find something that someone else has tossed and find a new purpose for it in my home...and on this particular visit, I hit the jackpot!!!

I have a method to my Goodwill madness. I start in the back of the store where the furniture is kept and I work my way to the checkout at the front of the store. On this particular day I didn’t even make out of the furniture section because I found 2 coffee tables that were taunting me and begging me to take them home! I wasn’t even in the market for a new coffee table because I had already restored my coffee table at home just the way I wanted it…but these tables were too cheap to pass up!

After bringing them home I thought to myself “now what?”….I certainly didn’t need them so what in the world would I do with them? I got online and did what I do best…I "googled" and ta-da, I happened across the most inspiring blog ever….well, my first of many inspiring blogs actually… and that’s where it all began! Shaunna from Perfectly Imperfect introduced me to the art of making old new with just a little bit of paint! With this tidbit of information my mind ran wild. Before I knew it I was painting coffee tables….my girlfriend’s hutch…taking orders from other girlfriend’s….and then I was starting a blog…and coming up with a “name” for my blog…and a logo…and my goodness it’s been a whirlwind. But it’s been fun! I’ve loved every second of it…

Now off to figure out where this adventure will take me next...I'm thinking that I need a little "space" to grow!

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. ~ 2 Corinthians 5:17
