Anyone who has not cruised before, can not imagine the experience. No other vacation is like it. You have everything you could ask for, right there, ready for you to enjoy. For one price you have a room, fine dinning, entertainment, and ports to explore. Cruising is different in another way too. Before you start your search have in mind a month you would like to cruise. Below are steps to help you find your best cruise.

Check out the cruise lines. Perhaps you have heard a good recommendation. Many prefer Royal Caribbean, for it's medium price range and luxury cruises. But with children in tow, Disney is great. The choice is yours.

Step 2
Do you have in mind where you would like to sail to? A month you would like to sale? If not, you need to decide, will it be the Caribbeans, Mexico, the Galapagos Islands? Where?

Step 3
Now, you are ready to start checking out cruise packages. Go to a cruise travel agent, such as Travelocity.com, or Cruise.com. You should compare prices with several agents, and with the cruise lines themselves. Here is where your pencil and paper come in, keep a record of the date, and price, the port it leaves from, where it goes, and anything else, such as a promotion. Your list will help you find the best cruise. Prices do change from day to day. This record will help you know what the best deal is.

Step 4
When you find a good sounding deal, check out the ship's history. Is it new? Is it small or large? What activities does it have? Everything should be listed about every ship on line. If it is not what you want, move on.

Step 5
Check out the travel insurance, it is a protection. When you have a final price for your cruise, add on your tip expense, which again, will be listed on the net. Now you are ready to sail. Happy cruising!

Keep yourself updated on airfare wars by watching the news and reading the newspaper. Look for limited-time promotional fares from major airlines and airline companies just starting up.

Step 2
Be flexible in scheduling your flight. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are typically the cheapest days to fly; late-night flights ('red-eyes'), very early morning flights and flights with at least one stop tend to be discounted as well.

Step 3
Ask the airline if it offers travel packages to save money in other areas. For instance, is a rental car or hotel room available at a discount along with the airline ticket?

Step 4
Find out whether the stated fare is the cheapest, and inquire about other options when speaking to the airline reservations clerk. If you're using the Internet, check more than one Web site and compare rates.

Step 5
Inquire about standby fares if you're flying off-season. High season is a bad time to fly standby because most airlines overbook flights, making it difficult to find a spare seat.

Step 6
Purchase tickets through consolidators, who buy blocks of tickets and sell them at a discount to help an airline fill up all available seats. Check the travel section of the newspaper under 'Ticket Consolidators.'

Step 7
Book early. You can purchase advance-ticket discounts by reserving 21 days ahead; book even earlier for holiday flights, especially in November and December. Keep in mind that holiday 'blackout periods' may prevent you from using frequent-flier miles.

Step 8
Stay with the same airline during your entire trip to receive round-trip or connecting fare discounts.

In 2008, it was wine bars; in 2009, the gastropub trend took New York by storm, with everyone from Daniel Boulud to Michael Psilakis jumping on the bandwagon. Even the Martignetti brothers got in on the action. But this Scottish-themed West Village gastropub stole our hearts with its Scotch-based specialty cocktails and lodge-like design accents like pheasant wallpaper and a wall-mounted deer head. A working fireplace and tasty, authentic Scottish grub like beef cheek and ale pie also helped make this decision an easy one.

LAS VEGAS — The first new hotel is opening at the big CityCenter development on the Las Vegas Strip.

The unveiling Tuesday of the nearly 1,500-room Vdara (vid-AR'-uh) hotel marks the start of a phased opening of the $8.5 billion project built by development partners MGM Mirage and Dubai World.

The Crystals retail shopping mall opens Thursday. The 392-room Mandarin Oriental opens Saturday. The centerpiece Aria hotel-casino is opens Dec. 16 with about 4,000 rooms.

Vdara is a 57-story, non-gambling, nonsmoking condominium hotel connected with other CityCenter features and the plush fountain-front Bellagio hotel next door. Bellagio is also owned by MGM Mirage.

Chicago Style Pizza Traditions

Pizza is a culinary tradition of Chicago dating back to the 1940's, when trademarks of the famous Chicago-style were originally crafted at Pizzeria Uno. The Italian restaurant introduced the Midwest to a new breed of pizza: deep dish. The bold approach to crust caught on quick, and became the inspiration for other unique takes on the Italian original. Today, Chicago-style pizza is mimicked across America, but not many people outside of the city realize that there's more to Chicago-style pizza than just deep dish.

Deep Dish
Cooked in a pan deep enough to be a bowl, this original favorite allows toppings to be piled high on top of a thick, buttery crust. Chunky tomato sauce, layers of mozzarella and three inch tall crust make the deep dish style stand out. Most commonly this type of pizza is generously topped with an assortment of Italian meats and vegetables like bell peppers and onions. Heavy to hold and messy to eat, deep dish gives pizza eaters license to overindulge.

Pan Pizza
Similar to deep dish, pan pizza was created by using the same tools but requires different ingredients. Pan pizza uses thicker dough and lots of olive oil for coating the pan. Out of the oven, the crust is slightly firm and crispy fried on the edges. The quality of crust is the main focal point, so it's common for pan pizzas to not have tomato sauce. Mozzarella is sprinkled on the crust and toppings are sometimes minimal. Pan pizza is a tame version of deep dish, but its simpler ingredients don't overwhelm the soft and satisfying crust.

Stuffed Pizza
Although some people think Pizza Hut started the stuffed crust phenomenon, its roots are truly in Chicago. Deep dish pizza opened the door for endless crust possibilities; stuffed pizza takes it to another level. Like deep dish, the cooking process starts with a thin layer of dough inside and along the sides of a deep set pan. Traditional toppings are piled inside, and then another thin layer of dough is stretched on top. The end result is a dome-shaped, crust covered pizza. Stuffed pizza gives new meaning to the term “pizza pie”.

Thin Crust
Not many people outside of Chicago know that the city makes more than just thick and filling pizzas; thin crust Chicago-style pizza is also a favorite among natives. Challenging east coast versions that tend to be a little more "bready" or chewy, Chicago's thin crust is crispy and soft on top. Sauce is very important on this type of pizza -- it must have an Italian herb flavor and taste slightly tangy. Many restaurants attempt to make this kind of thin crust, but the ones who succeed in true Chicago style incorporate the perfect balance of dough and crunch.

A Chicago Tradition
The deep dish pan inspired a variety of other delicious kinds of pizza, all unique to Chicago. The pizza creations established over 60 years ago continue to guide the pizza makers of today. More than just a type of slice, Chicago-style pizza is a tribute to the past.

Chinatown is a unique neighborhood in that it is more than simply a collection of restaurants, shops and homes. It is a rich cultural experience, and a visitor to Chicago’s Chinatown has the distinct feeling of having touched upon a microcosm of China itself.

History
Chinese history in this country has been marked by prejudice and persecution; on the west coast, where Chinese immigrants first clustered upon arriving in America, this ill-treatment was especially harsh. Thus many Chinese families began to seek a better life further east. The completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1870 was significant in that it brought many Chinese immigrants to Chicago.

Towards the end of the 1870’s, the Chinese population in America had grown significantly; in 1890, there were over 500 Chinese individuals in Chicago. Many of them opened small businesses such as restaurants, shops and laundry establishments. In the 1950’s and 60’s, the Chinese population in Chicago doubled from 7000 to 14000. This was largely due to adverse conditions in China at this time; Chinese families sought a better life abroad. The increase in immigration was also due to improved relations between China and America.

Today’s Chinatown, centering around Cermak Rd. and Wentworth Ave., was established in 1905. Since that point, many Chinese immigrants have moved into the area. There are organizations such as the Chinese American Service League, the Chinatown Redevelopment Association and the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association that work towards providing new immigrants with proper housing and jobs. In 2000, there were 68,021 Chinese people living in the neighborhood, and the numbers are growing every day. Chinatown is bounded by 18th Street on the north, 23rd Street on the south, State Street on the east and the Chicago River on the west.

Shopping
Shops in Chinatown are numerous; almost all of them carry similar goods, yet the goods themselves span the spectrum from gifts to clothing to housewares. Walking into any of these shops, a visitor will find bamboo and money plants, child-sized Chinese outfits, painted ceramic pottery of every shape and size, embroidered fans, chimes, Buddha statues and dozens of knick-knacks that are perfect for souvenirs.

Some gift shops with good selection are Chinese Boutique, World Treasures Emporium and Happy Gift. For jade and fine jewelry try Dor Fook Jewelry. Ching Wei Oriental Furniture Showroom has authentic Chinese furniture and a selection of gifts as well; the goods at this store are of especially high quality.

Restaurants
Restaurants in Chinatown serve almost every type of Southeast and Far East Asian cuisine. The first immigrants to Chinatown opened restaurants, and some of these are still around; in this neighborhood, food is taken very seriously and there is something for everyone.

For general Chinese food, try Three Happiness, Phoenix or Dragon Court Restaurant. Several restaurants boast cuisine of a specific country; Penang serves Malaysian fare, Hing Kee Restaurant and The Noodle both serve Vietnamese and The Moon Palace Restaurant serves Mandarin meals. You can try Pan Asian dishes at Joy Yee’s Noodle Shop and Szechuan at Lao Sze Chuan. Sakura Sushi is the place to go for sushi, while BBQ King Restaurant specializes in eat-in or take-away barbecue. Finish your evening at Tea Leaf Café, which is known around Chinatown for bubble tea, coffee and snacks.

Community
Homes in Chinatown are generally old, although there are some newer developments as well. The inhabitants are largely Chinese immigrants; many of them move away from Chinatown as they become more established, while some remain in the area for a longer period.

What makes Chinatown so valuable to its inhabitants is the strong sense of community; for Chinese individuals in the neighborhood, it is what connects them to China itself. There are several organizations in place that work towards preserving a tightly knit community. The Chinese Softball League of Chicago, for example, organizes a summer softball league. The Chicago Chinese Cultural Institute promotes social and cultural events, while the Chicago Chinatown Chamber of Commerce helps promote small businesses in the area. There are the Asian Social Network and MatchAsian.com, both of which help ensure that the next generation of Asians remain as community-based as the present one.

The people of Chinatown work not only to preserve their culture, but to celebrate it as well. Festivals occur in Chinatown year-round; there is the Chinese Autumn Moon Festival, held annually, to celebrate the day when the moon is the brightest. The Chinese follow a lunar calendar, so the date of this celebration changes from year to year. Although the Moon Festival does feature food, live music and performances, the most notable aspect of this festival is the décor; huge lanterns light up the night, reminiscent of the bright moon itself. The Chinatown Summer Fair is another annually held festival, featuring food, live music, cultural dances and performances and even a Lion Dance Procession. Another traditional event is the Dragon Boat Race for Literacy, held on the Chicago River. You can watch the race as you enjoy food, live music, crafts booths and other cultural activities. Also held in autumn is the Double Ten Parade; this is the primary Chinatown parade, celebrating Chinese Independence with floats, marchers and of course an immense Mystical Dragon. When people think of Chinatown, it is this dragon and this parade that typify the neighborhood; the parade is so popular that it has become symbolic of Chinese culture in Chicago.

Summary
Today, Chinatown is a draw for locals as well as tourists. Chinese individuals from around the city visit Chinatown for groceries, food, newspapers and of course a touch of home. Nowhere else can they find the selection of Chinese medicine shops, traditional services and genuine Chinese food. 1) Sears Tower: This is the tallest buildings in America and one of the tallest in the world. The Sears tower sky deck offers a mind-blowing view of the city. You need to take the super-fast elevator to the 103rd floor. You can spend a couple of hours up there with your family taking photographs and indulging in the view. You can buy souvenirs to treasure your visit here.

2) Navy Pier: It's spread over a very large area and comprises of gardens, shopping malls, rides, parks, restaurants, etc. It's situated next to Lake Michigan. Don't miss riding on the very tall Ferris wheel. There is also an Imax theater in Navy pier where you can watch a 3D movie. Kids will love it. You will love the place at night, when all the lights are on.

3) John Hancock Center: This again one of the tallest buildings of Chicago. The view from the top floor viewing deck is amazing. You can also take lunch/dinner in the restaurants located near the top floor.

4) Millennium Park: This is a modern wonder completed in 2004. It is a totally futuristic design. Here you will see the famous Bean of Chicago. Millennium park has large gardens covered with metallic structures.

5) Field Museum: This museum of natural history is famous for the largest T-rex dinosaur skeleton in the world (named Sue). You can pose in front of it for your photo memories. It contains artefacts from all over the world.

6) Shedd Aquarium: It is a sure-hit with kids. Featuring sea-life of all types. The dolphin show is a must visit for everyone. It happens at fixed times during the day. Make sure that you visit the underwater tunnels to see whales and sharks.

7) Adler Planetarium & Museum: Take a journey to outer-space sitting in your seat at the planetarium. Visit its museum to see some rare exhibits.

Tip: purchase the Go Chicago card online by searching on Google. This card is a multi-ticket thing and will help you save you quite a bit of money and time (no need to stand in ticket queues). Instead of driving around in Chicago and paying $$ in parking fees, just use the trains. The city is well connected all over by the public transit network. Buy a one day pass to avoid paying for every trip. This will again save you money. Chicago is famous for its deep-dish (really fat) Pizza. Gino's East, Giordanos, etc. are famous for the deep dish Pizza. All in all, you will have a great time in the windy city. Just relax and have a good time.

This destination will be the perfect day get away on your next vacation to Las Vegas, Nevada. Spend the day or morning and be back enjoying the entertainment downtown by afternoon.

Located approximately 20 miles west of downtown Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon is a perfect day trip for your Las Vegas vacation. Red Rock Canyon features a scenic drive that loops through the scenic canyon area, miles of hiking trails for a beginner or a seasoned veteran, a vast array of climbing opportunities, and many other activities for the whole family.

The scenic drive is around 13 miles in length and has pullouts and parking areas at all of the main attractions. Picnic areas are located just off of the asphalt surface. This is a great way to enjoy the beauty of the area without a lot of physical exertion.

There are 22 named trails in the area. My favorites are the Calico Hills and the Lost Creek Children’s Discovery Trail.

Calico Hills is an easy trail along the base of the towering fossilized sand dunes that comprise the Calico Hills. I cannot think of the correct adjectives to describe the views along the trails. Brilliant red intermingled with traditional sandstone coloring rising above you. The green vegetation along the bottoms and suspended along the slopes and ravines. This is not a steep trail, with the exception of the hike to and from the parking areas.

The Lost Creek Children’s Discovery trail is about a one mile hike and is easy enough for everyone. I take my young son (3 years) on this one. The trail crosses a dry wash and then with the aid of stairs climbs a portion of the hillside. The trail passes an ancient agave roasting pit used by the native people long ago. The interpretive signs describe some of the things they have found during excavations. Another area that you will pass is a camping area used seasonally by the native people. There are several natural overhangs and a few boulders that provide shade for a brief rest. Then it is on passed the springs that are being rehabilitated and back down to the parking area.

Lost Creek also has a picnic area that is perfect for lunch after your hike. The picnic area is situated at the end of the pavement and has several areas that you can explore. This is a very popular destination and you should try to get there early or just be patient and wait for an available table.

Rock climbing permits are available from the BLM office. You will need to visit their website to get the number to call. You must call ahead to get your permits. Climbing on the sandstone escarpments is not permitted for 24 hours following a rain storm. The Calico Hills area is very popular with rock climbers. It is amazing to watch someone start their climb and over time become just a colored dot high above you.

In addition to the sandstone there is an abundance of climbing opportunities in the limestone crags found throughout Red Rock Canyon and the entire area surrounding Las Vegas. Use caution and correct equipment at all times while climbing. Remember we want you to enjoy this area year after year.
