SHASHI THAROOR’S SPEECH AT OXFORD UNION SOCIETY 28th MAY 2015

At a recent debate on the British colonization of India in Oxford, Congress MP and writer Shashi Tharoor brilliantly argued why Britain owes reparations for its exploitation of the subcontinent.

The video of the debate, held on may 28 the Oxford Union, went viral on social media in the past few days.

The motion of the debate was: “This house believes Britain owes reparations to her former colonies” and Tharoor, along with eminent speakers from Ghana and Jamaica, spoke in favour ot if. British and American intellectuals spoke in opposition.

Tharoor’s speech was widely appreciated in India because of the succinctness with which he illustrate how and why colonial rule exploited the subcontinent, and how violence and racism were the order of those days.

Though numerous conversation take place in the public domain on India’s freedom struggle, very little happens about critically analyzing, with data and facts, how much colonial rule affected undivided India.

Tharoor’s speech went a long way in explaining in easy to understand ways how colonialists ruined and exploited India.

Here is the full text of his speech.

Madam President and gentlemen, ladies of the house

I standing here with eight minutes in my hands in this venerable and rather magnificent institution, I was going to assure you that I belong to the Henry VIII School of public speaking - that as Henry VIII said to his wives 'I shall not keep you long'. But now finding myself the seventh speaker out of eight in what must already seem a rather long evening to you I rather feel like Henry VIII's the last wife. I know more or less of what expected of me but I am not sure how to do it any differently.

Perhaps what I should do is really try and pay attention to the arguments that have advanced by the Opposition today. We had for example Sir Richard Ottaway suggesting - challenging the very idea that it could be argued that the economic situation of the colonies was actually worsened by the experience of British colonialism.

Well I stand to offer you the Indian example, Sir Richard. India share of the world economy when Britain arrived on it's shores was 23 per cent, by the time the British left it was down to below 4 per cent. Why? Simply because India had been governed for the benefit of Britain.

Britain's rise for 200 years was financed by it's depredations in India. In fact Britain's industrial revolution was actually premised upon the de-industrialisation of India.

The handloom weaver's for example famed across the world whose products were exported around the world, Britain came right in. There were actually these weaver's making fine muslin as light as woven wear, it was said, and Britain came right in, smashed their thumbs, broke their looms, imposed tariffs and duties on their cloth and products and started, of course, taking their raw material from India and shipping back manufactured cloth flooding the world's markets with what became the products of the dark and satanic mills of the Victoria in England

That meant that the weavers in India became beggars and India went from being a world famous exporter of finished cloth into an importer when from having 27 per cent of the world trade to less than 2 per cent.

Meanwhile, colonialists like Robert Clive brought their rotten boroughs in England on the proceeds of their loot in India while taking the Hindi word loot into their dictionary as well as their habits.

And the British had the gall to call him Clive of India as if he belonged to the country, when all he really did was to ensure that much of the country belonged to him.

By the end of 19th century, the fact is that India was already Britain's biggest cash cow, the world's biggest purchaser of British goods and exports and the source for highly paid employment for British civil servants. We literally paid for our own oppression. And as has been pointed out, the worthy British Victorian families that made their money out of the slave economy, one fifth of the elites of the wealthy class in Britain in 19th century owed their money to transporting 3 million Africans across the waters. And in fact in 1833 when slavery was abolished and what happened was a compensation of 20 million pounds was paid not as reparations to those who had lost their lives or who had suffered or been oppressed by slavery but to those who had lost their property.

I was struck by the fact that your Wi-Fi password at this Union commemorates the name of Mr Gladstone - the great liberal hero. Well, I am very sorry his family was one of those who benefited from this compensation.

Staying with India between 15-29 million Indians died of starvation in British induced famines. The most famous example was, of course, was the great Bengal famine during the World War II when 4 million people died because Winston Churchill deliberately as a matter of written policy proceeded to divert essential supplies from civilians in Bengal to sturdy tummies and Europeans as reserve stockpiles.

He said that the starvation of anyway underfed Bengalis mattered much less than that of sturdy Greeks' - Churchill's actual quote. And when conscious stricken British officials wrote to him pointing out that people were dying because of this decision, he peevishly wrote in the margins of file, “Why hasn’t Gandhi died yet?"

So, all notions that the British were trying to do their colonial enterprise out of enlightened despotism to try and bring the benefits of colonialism and civilisation to the benighted. Even I am sorry - Churchill's conduct in 1943 is simply one example of many that gave light to this myth.

As others have said on the proposition - violence and racism were the reality of the colonial experience. And no wonder that the sun never set on the British empire because even god couldn’t trust the English in the dark.

Let me take the World War I as a very concrete example since the first speaker Mr. Lee suggested these couldn't be quantified. Let me quantify World War I for you. Again I am sorry from an Indian perspective as others have spoken abut the countries. One-sixth of all the British forces that fought in the war were Indian - 54 000 Indians actually lost their lives in that war, 65 000 were wounded and another 4000 remained missing or in prison.

Indian taxpayers had to cough up a 100 million pounds in that time’s money. India supplied 17 million rounds of ammunition, 6,00,000 rifles and machine guns, 42 million garments were stitched and sent out of India and 1.3 million Indian personnel served in this war. I know all this because the commemoration of the centenary has just taken place.

But not just that, India had to supply 173,000 animals 370 million tonnes of supplies and in the end the total value of everything that was taken out of India and India by the way was suffering from recession at that time and poverty and hunger, was in today's money 8 billion pounds. You want quantification, it’s available.

World War II, it was was even worse - 2.5 million Indians in uniform. I won't believe it to the point but Britain's total war debt of 3 billion pounds in 1945 money, 1.25 billion was owed to India and never actually paid.

Somebody mentioned Scotland, well the fact is that colonialism actually cemented your union with Scotland. The Scots had actually tried to send colonies out before 1707, they had all failed, I am sorry to say. But, then of course, came union and India was available and there you had a disproportionate employment of Scots, I am sorry but Mr Mckinsey had to speak after me, engaged in this colonial enterprise as soldiers, as merchants, as agents, as employees and their earnings from India is what brought prosperity to Scotland, even pulled Scotland out of poverty.

Now that India is no longer there, no wonder the bonds are loosening. Now we have heard other arguments on this side and there has been a mention of railways. Well let me tell you first of all as my colleague the Jamaican High Commissioner has pointed out, the railways and roads were really built to serve British interests and not those of the local people but I might add that many countries have built railways and roads without having had to be colonalised in order to do so.

They were designed to carry raw materials from the hinterland into the ports to be shipped to Britain. And the fact is that the Indian or Jamaican or other colonial public - their needs were incidental. Transportation - there was no attempt made to match supply from demand from as transports, none what so ever.

Instead in fact the Indian railways were built with massive incentives offered by Britain to British investors, guaranteed out of Indian taxes paid by Indians with the result that you actually had one mile of Indian railway costing twice what it cost to built the same mile in Canada or Australia because there was so much money being paid in extravagant returns.

Britain made all the profits, controlled the technology, supplied all the equipment and absolutely all these benefits came as British private enterprise at Indian public risk. That was the railways as an accomplishment.

We are hearing about aid, I think it was Sir Richard Ottaway mentioned British aid to India. Well let me just point out that the British aid to India is about 0.4 per cent of India's GDP. The government of India actually spends more on fertiliser subsidies which might be an appropriate metaphor for that argument.

If I may point out as well that as my fellow speakers from the proposition have pointed out there have been incidents of racial violence, of loot, of massacres, of blood shed, of transportation and in India's case even one of our last Mughal emperors. Yes, may be today's Britains are not responsible for some of these reparations but the same speakers have pointed with pride to their foreign aid - you are not responsible for the people starving in Somalia but you give them aid surely the principle of reparation for what is the wrongs that have done cannot be denied.

It's been pointed out that for the example dehumanisation of Africans in the Caribbean, the massive psychological damage that has been done, the undermining of social traditions, of the property rights, of the authority structures of the societies - all in the interest of British colonialism and the fact remains that many of today's problems in these countries including the persistence and in some cases the creation of racial, of ethnic, of religious tensions were the direct result of colonialism. So there is a moral debt that needs to be paid.

Someone challenged reparations elsewhere. Well I am sorry Germany doesn't just give reparations to Israel, it also gives reparations to Poland perhaps some of the speakers here are too young to remember the dramatic picture of Charles William Brunt on his knees in the Walter Gaiter in 1970.

There are other examples, there is Italy's reparations to Libya, there is Japan's to Korea even Britain has paid reparations to the New Zealand Maoris. So it is not as if this is something that is unprecedented or unheard of that somehow opens some sort of nasty Pandora box.

No wonder professor Louis reminded us that he is from Texas. There is a wonderful expression in Texas that summarises the arguments of the opposition 'All hat and no cattle'.

Now, If I can just quickly look through the other notes that I was scribbling while they were speaking, there was a reference to democracy and rule of law. Let me say with the greatest possible respect, you cannot to be rich to oppress, enslave, kill, maim, torture people for 200 years and then celebrate the fact that they are democratic at the end of it.

We were denied democracy so we had to snatch it, seize it from you with the greatest of reluctance it was considered in India's case after 150 years of British rule and that too with limited franchise.

If I may just point out the arguments made by a couple of speakers. The first speaker Mr. Lee in particular conceded all the evil atrocities of the colonialism but essentially suggested that reparations won't really help, they won't help the right people, they would be use of propaganda tools, they will embolden people like Mr Mugabe. So, it's nice how in the old days, I am sorry to say that either people of the Caribbean used to frighten their children into behaving and sleeping by saying some Francis Drake would come up after them that was the legacy, now Mugabe will be there - the new sort of Francis Drake of our time.

The fact is very simply said, that we are not talking about reparations as a tool to empower anybody, they are a tool for you to atone, for the wrongs that have been done and I am quite prepared to accept the proposition that you can't evaluate, put a monetary sum to the kinds of horrors people have suffered. Certainly no amount of money can expedite the loss of a loved one as somebody pointed out there. You are not going to figure out the exact amount but the principle is what matters.

The fact is that to speak blithely of sacrifices on both sides as an analogy was used here - a burglar comes into your house and sacks the place but stubs his toe and you say that there was sacrifice on both sides that I am sorry to say is not an acceptable argument. The truth is that we are not arguing specifically that vast some of money needs to be paid. The proposition before this house is the principle of owing reparations, not the fine points of how much is owed, to whom it should be paid. The question is, is there a debt, does Britain owe reparations?

As far as I am concerned, the ability to acknowledge your wrong that has been done, to simply say sorry will go a far far far longer way than some percentage of GDP in the form of aid.

What is required it seems to me is accepting the principle that reparations are owed. Personally, I will be quiet happy if it was one pound a year for the next 200 years after the last 200 years of Britain in India.

A company secretary executes her/his work with colleagues at all the levels. A CS is the one who fills the gap between the managers and the employees of the organization. Keeping the board of directors and stakeholders updated about any meeting and agenda, making a detailed note of the proceedings of the entire meeting and handling other documentary work falls into the role of a company secretary. The course of a CS is a professional course conducted by The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI). The course consists of three stages, Foundation, executive and professional program. A candidate should be 10+2 to start up with a foundation program. There are various institutes that provide training and education to cost and management accountants in India. These institutes are dynamic, premier and professional institutes that are professionally associated towards the industrial and economic development of the nation. The accountant in this profession handles the responsibility as Cost and management Accountants. The job is basically concerned with the provisions and application of accounting information to managers within organizations that help them to make informed business decisions. The basic tasks these accountants perform includes the process of identification, measurement, collection, analysis, formulation, rendering and communication of information and eventually takes place the preparation of a financial report. The ICMAI course is divided into 3 parts. First is the foundation course, which needs a minimum qualification of 10+2, however candidates already applied for the 12th and are awaiting for the results can also apply for the foundation course. Then comes the intermediate course. Although, students who are graduated directly become eligible for the intermediate course, they can skip foundation program. Then comes the final course. ICSI or the Institute of company secretaries of India is the leading entity that offers valuable certifications to aspirants in the company secretarial program. The major responsibilities of the institute include registering and keeping track of students, offering opportunities for practical training along with theoretical sessions, conducting examinations in company secretaryship, issuing Government Diploma to successful candidates and so on. Whereas, for Cost and Management Accountant there are various other options, such as doing a certificate course in financial management or choosing up a financial planning course for your post graduation. Apart from the Institute of Cost and Management Accountant of India (ICMAI), many other ICMA institutes promise to offer an accountant course of this level. Mostly commerce students are eligible for this program. However, to enable non-commerce students the ICSI has made it compulsory to take up a course or oral tuition in those subjects of the foundation examination which he/she had not studied at the graduate or post graduate level. So, basically CS handles the legal matters related to the company and CMA specializes in handling the accounts, bookkeeping and audit. ICMA includes collection, assimilation and analysis of financial information from all areas of the company while the role of a CS is that of an advisor in the legal matters of the company. They act as an intermediate between the company and its board of directors, stakeholders and the regulatory authorities. Students, on completion of the CS course can find employment in government accounts or departments of law. Of late, ICMAI course was lagging behind. However, there were important changes in the regulations which has made this profession lucrative both on the professional front and practice. Selection Process
The selection process will consist of two-stages. Eligible candidates will be called for Aptitude Test (AT) and Personal Interview (PI) based on their academic performance in Secondary or equivalent, Higher Secondary or equivalent, scholastic achievements and performance in SAT-1. Candidates with no valid SAT-I scores are also eligible to apply if they satisfy the minimum requirements as mentioned above.

Examination Stress

The major causes of stress for students are exams. There are students who commit suicide just because of exam stress. Exam fear and exam anxiety are things which are common among students of all age groups. Some are capable of handling exam fear and exam stress in their won way. Some fall prey to effects of exam stress and go to depression, perform badly in exams or even take extreme measures. Sometimes, the exam pressure can give you panic attacks. A lot of people find that the stress before exams is often worse than the actual exam and it can be made even worse if they have older brothers or sisters who have already done well and feel they have to match up to their standards.

How to Reduce Stress?

Make a realistic revision timetable and stick to it. Start planning it well before the exams begin. Don't leave revision to the last minute.
Make brief notes of your books, notes and essays to make them easier to digest quickly, especially if you don't like the subject or find it difficult.
Add headings and sub-headings, or use highlighting pens and revision cards, key words or charts - whatever works for you.
Work out what revision timetable best suits you.
If you can concentrate well in the morning then do most of your studying before lunch, not late at night when you can't concentrate. If you can study at night then study at later half of the day, but go to bed at reasonable hour and get enough sleep.
Revise very nicely since that is very important.
Try answering questions from past exam papers or explaining tricky answers to someone else to make sure you have understood it.
If you really cannot concentrate it may be because you are tired, hungry, or just bored. Take a break and come back to it 10 minutes later. Short bursts of concentrated revision are often better than hours of staring at the same page.
Always ask for help if there are things you don't understand, and especially if you are feeling, stressed out.
Finally, never forget that there is life after revision and exams.
Try to be cool in the exam

Tips for Reducing Stress Before Exam

When the exam finally arrives, it is too late to worry, over whether you have revised enough. On the date of the exam, you should maintain your coolness. Here is some more advice from experts.
Have a good breakfast. Getting hungry during the middle of an exam can be distracting, especially if your concentration is already warning.
Check out the details of exams and make sure you know when and where the exam will be!
Give yourself plenty of time to get there and calm your nerves. Rushing only adds to the feeling of panic.
Prepare everything the night before, check that you have packed your bag with everything you will need - extra pens, water, tissues and so on. On the morning of the exam, tension can make you forget something important. So relax.
Talk to the other pupils before taking the exam if it helps to build your confidence, but if it just makes you more nervous, try and find a quiet corner for yourself.
Go to the toilet before the exam starts.
Take time to read the instructions and questions carefully. Many students do badly because they give the wrong number of answers or misread the questions.
Work out how long you will have to answer each question and try to stick to it.
Keep an eye on the time and follow instructions about how long to spend on different sections.
Always keep 10-15 minutes for revision, check for obvious mistakes and ensure that you have answered all the questions.

Tips for Reducing Exam Anxiety

Try to relax, keep your stress level to a minimum. Nobody can be perfect and all one can do is to do his or her best.
Prepare a revision timetable and set out what topics, subjects you want to cover each day.
The best way to study is usually in short periods and build your timetable in such a manner that you keep some time for relaxation.
Make revising easier by highlighting the most important areas, which you need to study and make notes of anything you don't understand or are unsure about and discuss this with a teacher or friend. You should discuss your course with your friends .You can also give each other moral support.
Make sure you are able to shell out some time for exercise, aerobics, walking, cycling, swimming, dancing - anything to get rid of the stress in your body.
Make sure you get fresh air each day - even a ten-minute walk in the park, round the block or spending time in the garden will help.
Some people find it motivating when they set aside some study time a few hours before a favorite programme they want to watch - it helps knowing that after your study you have something to enjoy.
In your relaxation time - don't even think about work and exams - go out with friends and enjoy yourself, listen to music, do whatever you enjoy and whatever helps you to feel relaxed. That way you will feel more motivated to continue revising after your relaxation time.
Have a balanced diet. Make sure that you always eat breakfast otherwise; you will feel restless and out of energy throughout the day and will not be in the right frame of mind to study. You can only concentrate properly when you are physically and mentally fine.
If you were unable to concentrate, it would be better to have a break for a while and then go back to studies.
Never go to sleep straight after revising - you need to have some relaxation before the end of the day. Maybe have a relaxing bath before going to bed and try to get to sleep at a reasonable time so you are not feeling tired the next day.
Don't leave your revision for last hours
Before the day of the exams check, you have everything you need - pencils, pens, rulers, etc.
On the day of your exams, get up early so you can take things at your own pace - don't rush and get panicky about being late.
Read the whole exam paper before starting the exam as that will give you an idea of how much time you will need for each question.
If you can't answer a question - don't panic - go onto the questions you feel more confident about and go back to the more difficult ones later.
If you feel getting stressed and panicky- take some deep breaths, slow down breathing, this will help you to calm down.
Don't crib after your exams. Give yourself a pat for attempting all the questions. Then relax.

Tips To Improve Concentration

1. Make study environment. use study table if possible.

2. Have a positive attitude towards learning. researches show that students showing curiousity towards study have more chances to concentrate.

3. Study room must have proper natural lighting and air. during night proper white light and a table lamp creates a good learning environment.

4. Keep a list of your achievements handy. this boosts up your morale and enthuses to do some thing better than previous attempt.

5. Try to keep clock at your back wall. a clock in sight will always attract your attention and you wont be able to concentrate for a long time.

8.. Identify your distractions. Find ways to decrease them or to postpone them until study breaks (e.g., puting your phone on silent mode, turning off instant messenger etc.)

9. Keep the TV off as it deviates your attention from studies. Decrease noises around you while studying. If you need some background music it should be soft.

10. Use "active study" techniques: sit straight in a chair at a desk, start out with questions about the material, outline chapters, underline key phrases after reading a section, write notes in margins, ask yourself what you have learned. take help of someone who can ask you random questions and you answer them.

11. Give yourself small targets, for this divide your task into smaller manageable tasks that can be completed in a short period of time. Push yourself to complete one small task, then move on to the next task. Focus on one small task at a time.

12. Understand your peak time of attention. someone can learn more during early morning and some other may learn more during nights. use time of peak alertness for studying difficult or less interesting topics. When you are tired or hungry concentration will be lowered.

13. Self motivation is the best motivation so When your mind starts to wander, come up with some cue words to say to yourself (e.g., "Focus." "Get back on task.") to focus your concentration again.

14. Take Short breaks when you have completed tasks or when you feel concentration has decreased. Breaks should be approximately 10-15 minutes.

15. Prepare a "To Do List" If you have other assignments or issues on your mind write them down on this list or take a small step to deal with them. Then get back to focusing on the task at hand.

How to Score well in Board Examination ?

With the introduction of CCE in class IX and X, however CBSE has lightened the burden of students, but for class 12 students and those class 10 students who are appearing in board conducted exam can refer to the following tips.

1. TIME MANAGEMENT: Prepare a time table to study. Divide you time into different subjects (Take care to spare some for recreation). give preference to subjects in which you feel you are weaker than other subjects.

2. STARTERS: Before starting for a long seating start reading a book, magazine, newspaper, article or novel etc. to gain interest in reading, once you gain momentum then switch over to your study pattern.

3. CONSISTENCY: remain consistent in studying all subjects everyday. Do not leave any subject for more than 2 days. Every subject should be taken up for study at least in every alternate day. The important and difficult ones may be taken up everyday.

4. DEVOTION: Devote at least 6-7 hours for self study. But do not cut down too much on your sleep and enjoyment. Take out a bit of time for relaxing and entertaining also.

5. RECREATION: Exercise regularly. yoga and meditation has shown improved results of students as per researches. Whenever you study, don't sit for too long continuously, you can also take one or two short breaks of 5-10 minutes during a continuous stretch of 3-4 hrs. of study. This will help in maintaining your interest.

6. LAST YEARS' PAPERS : Make it a regular habit to be in touch with the CBSE previous years papers, sample papers etc. Keep on looking what has been the pattern of CBSE and what type of questions are generally asked. Also refer to their suggested answers.

7. SINCERITY: Take you class room test seriously and sincerely. Go through your answer sheet seriously and see What were the errors/mistakes, where marks have been deducted and how can the errors be avoided next time.

8. DIET: Take proper care of your health and hygiene. Do regular exercise, take more of green vegetables, milk and other nutritious food. Stay away from tentions.

9. RESOURCE MATERIAL: Don't just stick to a single book. complete your text book and take up reference book suggested by experts or your teachers. Although you must stick to NCERT books, but for extra practice thee books will definitely help you out.

10. GUIDE: Your teacher is your best guide, who understands your strength and weeknes more than you do, so always be in contact with your teachers and ask them to evaluate yourself.

11. PREVIOUS YEAR'S PAPERS: are just like boon for students aspiring for board examination. they make you understand the pattern of that subject. collect a handfull of them and solve all of them for better understanding of question paper pattern.

12. MOCK TEST:   Just keep working towards your Goal and appear for as many test as possible and keep on evaluating yourself.

Jobs in Hotel Management

The Managers
Hotel managers are responsible for the efficient and profitable operation of their establishments. The General Manager controls the finances, establishment norms to be followed by the staff while providing their services to the guests, housekeeping, food quality, decor and interiors. Assistant Managers supervise the day-to-day operations of their departments. Large hotels have Resident Managers to resolve problems round the clock. The Department Managers work under the supervision and guidance of the top management.

The Front Office
The first people to welcome guests in a hotel are the personnel in the front office. The Front Office Manager supervises the work of the receptionists, information clerk, reservation clerk and other service personnel like bell captain, bell boy and doorman. The Bell Boy assists the guests with the baggage to check in to the room. The Bell Captain supervises the work of bell boys. The Information Clerk delivers the telephone messages to the guests through the Bell Captain.

F&B (Food and Beverage)
This department includes:

Culinary Unit
Steward Department
Food Service Department

Restaurant and Food Service Managers are responsible for stocks of tableware, linens, paper, supplies furniture, and fixtures cleaning. They arrange for equipment maintenance and repairs. They also have to maintain records of hours and wages of employees, payrolls, and taxes, etc. Banquet Managers are in-charge of catering assignments.

Housekeeping
A hotel requires maintenance on a very large scale. Hotels have a house keeping department to look after cleanliness in rooms, lounges, lobby, restaurant, dining halls, parks etc. This department functions under the supervision of the Executive Housekeeper.

Executive Housekeepers are responsible for ensuring that guest rooms, meeting and banquet rooms and public areas are clean, orderly and well maintained. They train, schedule and supervise the work of housekeepers, inspect rooms and order for the necessary supplies. Housekeeping is a round the clock job .This department works in shifts.

Marketing Department
Today marketing of services is a major aspect of hotel management.Sales and marketing division works to identify the needs of prospective customers, develop stay packages to suit their needs and sell the services, which have been developed.

HM Entrance Tests

To be eligible for the entrance exams, a candidate must have secured a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (10+2).

In some institutes, those who clear the written test are called for group discussions and personal interviews.
After Class XII: Diploma/degree in hotel management – These courses are conducted by several types of institutions — government and privately managed institutions or institutions operated by chain of hotels, hotel schools conducting training programmes in collaboration with international hotel institutions etc. Selection to most of these courses is through an entrance exam that includes a written test, interview and group discussion.

After graduation: Graduates from any stream or from hotel management institutes are recruited as trainees for prospective management positions. There are rigorous selection tests for management trainees, which include aptitude tests, group discussions, and public speaking.

How to Improve Study Skills during Exams Time

Most of the students in present time feel stress, fatigue, anxiety etc. during exam days. this is a general problem, which could be eradicated with the help of simple methods which are listed below.

Role of Food and Food habits :

We have enumerated several nutrients that can help you improve your study skills anyway – for your information:

1. Vitamin E. Studies have shown that there is a connection between memory loss and lack of Vitamin E; so it is common for Vitamin E to be included in the supplement staples of senior citizens and stroke victims. However, the studies do not conclude that taking a capsule of Vitamin E will boost one's memory.

2. Peanuts are also considered as brain food; peanuts are high in protein and proteins are known as the building blocks of our organs and muscles – brain muscles.

3. Coffee and Colas. Coffee and colas with high caffeine help because the caffeine keeps you awake; other than that, there is not much basis to consider them brain foods. (dont forget the side effects of excessive use of these)

How to learn? This is the question which everybody wants to get answer, Its strange that there is no one "way" to learn. The good news is that there are many ways.

(a) Traditional Ways:
Read, take notes, repeat what you learn so you won't forget it - all of these are traditional ways to learn something new.

(b) Modern Ways:
The following are three more techniques to try.

Learn more by taking breaks. Research shows that we remember best what we studied first and last in a given "learning session." Take more breaks, and you have "more sessions", so you increase the number of firsts and lasts.

How often should you take a break? There isn't a clear answer. Obviously if you take a break every two minutes it can just interfere with learning. You can try taking a break whenever your mind starts to wander, but probably no more often than a five-minute break every fifteen minutes. Getting up and moving around during your breaks can also keep your mind fresh.

Indian Army

The Indian Army is the largest and the oldest branch of the Indian armed forces. It trains the individuals to fight on land and consists of various divisions including the infantry, the artillery, the armored corps etc.

Besides these combat divisions, the support division in the army includes the supply corps, the engineers, the ordinance supply corps, military intelligence and medical staff etc. The primary responsibility of the army is to safeguard the geographical boundaries of the country and to capture enemy territory in the event of a war. The army training includes both offence and defensive operations. In addition to the primary responsibility, the army is also called upon in peace time to aid in relief and rescue operations during natural calamities and for counter insurgency.

The career opportunity available with Indian Army is enormous. Nowhere else you will get such phenomenal opportunities to constantly upgrade your skills. The army recruits candidates both for its technical and non-technical branches. To become an officer one should clear the NDA entrance examination conducted by the UPSC and then go for professional education and training. NDA cadets are awarded Bachelor's degrees in Arts, Science or Computer Science on completion of training. If you join the technical stream, you will acquire Graduate and Post-Graduate degrees in Engineering.

Selection for the prestigious Defence Services Staff College course results in the award of an M Sc. in Defence and Strategic Studies. What's more, you can also get study leave for two years to further upgrade your professional skills.

These growth opportunities are virtually unlimited. You could even get into Research and Development, if you have the aptitude. From Engineering to Medicine, from administration to Strategy, from Armament Technology to Management, all opportunities will encompass you if you are with Indian Army.

Those candidates who want to join the Army as soldier should fulfill the general eligibility criteria like age, qualification nationality etc. In addition they have to qualify written tests followed by physical fitness test and medical tests. Recruitment in the Army is conducted throughout the year through an open rally system. The recruitment programme is published in local newspaper, two weeks prior to the conduct of the rally.

The army is divided into various divisions. A brief description of the division and nature of duties is listed below:

Infantry:

The infantry consists of troops who fight the enemy on foot using equipment including from self loading rifles, automatic rifles, machine guns, grenades, mines, anti tank weapons, shoulder fired missiles and rocket launchers. Infantry troops capture and hold on to enemy positions or defend their own positions. For high mobility, troops make use of transport including personnel carriers and jeeps. Elite commando units and paratroopers are also part of the infantry. Infantry officers and troops have to undergo intensive training in arms handling.

Artillery

The artillery uses long range field guns, multi barrel rocket launchers and missile for their maneuvers. The role of the artillery is twofold. In civilian areas the artillery uses weapons such as anti aircraft guns and surface to air missiles to protect sensitive locations such as dams, airfields, oil rigs, power generating stations, ports etc from attack. On the warfront the artillery uses long range field guns, multi barrel rocket launchers and missiles for their attacking and defensive operations.

Armoured Corps

The armoured corps consists of battalions of tanks and other armoured vehicles. The armoured corps can advance swiftly and are used to capture enemy territory along with the infantry. They can also defend positions by engaging enemy tanks in battle. Armoured corps is considered to be one of the most prestigious divisions of the army.

Engineers

The primary responsibility of the army engineers is to quickly construct roads, bridges, airfields, helipads etc so the all the three sections of defence forces can advance rapidly. Engineers also destroy enemy bases and cause obstacles for the advancement of enemy troops. Besides these they also lay minefields and clear enemy minefields, defuse explosives and construct other infrastructure for the combat troops.

Signals

The officers and men in the signals regiment are responsible for the quick implementation and maintenance of communication links between the army headquarters and the forward positions during war time. Besides this they are also responsible for electronic warfare.

Army Service Corps (ASC)

ASC personnel are responsible for the movement of troops, vehicles, rations, petrol/diesel, arms and ammunition etc. The personnel of the ASC use road, train as well as water transportation in the movement. They are also responsible for safe storage of rations, arms and ammunition, clothing and special equipment.

Electrical and Mechanical Engineers

The armed forces have a large number of equipment ranging ranging from simple rifles to sophisticated missiles. Electrical and mechanical engineers are responsible for the maintenance of all the equipment of the armed forces and ensure that it is always in peak condition. The officers in this service include engineers from the field of mechanical, aeronautical, electrical, electronics, and communication engineering.

Intelligence Corps

The officers of this branch are involved in the collection, analysis and interpretation of information about the enemy troops including their movements and plans. Officers in the intelligence corps specialise in encoding and decoding messages, analysis of pictures taken by aircraft and satellite, data collection and analysis.

Ordinance Corps

The ordinance corps is responsible for procurement, storage and maintenance and issue of types of military equipment including ammunition and spares.

Army Medical Corps

The army medical corps includes doctors who provide medical care for the families of troops and officers of the armed forces. During a conflict they provide emergency medical care to the wounded officers and troops on the battlefront.

The armed forces train their own doctors and nurses at the Armed Forces Medical College and College of Nursing respectively. They also induct doctors from other medical colleges.

Nursing officers

The nursing officers nurse the officers, troops and their families in the hospitals and clinics of the armed forces.

Dental Officers

The responsibility of the dental officers is to provide dental care to the personnel of the armed forces and their families.

Education Corps

Education officers provide continuing education to the armed forces personnel especially with respect to the latest development in weapon systems, new techniques of warfare, computerization, communication systems etc.

Postal Services

The personnel in this service are responsible for looking after the postal requirement of the army. All money orders, personal letters and general mail is handled by the postal services.

Military Police

Personnel of the military police are responsible for maintaining discipline and order among the troops of the armed forces.

Judge Advocate General

This branch inducts law graduates to provide legal help to the army for handling various civil cases as well as disciplinary action against armed forces personnel.

Veterinary Corps

Some regiments of the army use animals such as horses, mules and dogs. The officers of the veterinary corps ensure the well being of these animals.

Eligibility

Technical Entry Scheme (TES) for Male 10+2 (PCM) Candidates

The unmarried, male candidates, who have passed 10+2 with PCM subjects and fulfil the Eligibility for the grant of permanent commission in the Army after 5 years of technical military training with the prescribed terms and conditions, are invited from tinie-to+-time through advertisement in the Employment News and other prominent national dailies, Eligibility : (a) Nationality. A candidate must not be married and must either be: A citizen of India . Pay Scale : A candidate must not be below I6V2 years on the first day of the month in which the course is commencing. Educational Qualification : Candidates who have 10+2 (PCM) certificate with minimum 70% aggregate marks in PCM are eligible for this entry.

Physical Standards : (a) Height and Weight: Minimum height 137 cm with correlated weight and proportionate chest with minimum 5 cm expansion, (b) Eye sight: Unaided distant vision 6/12, 6/18.

Type of Commission : On successful completion of course, cadets are granted permanent Commission in the rank of Lt in the Army in Technical branches i.e. EME, Sings, Engrs.

Training: Total training is for a period of 5 years, as under:

(a) Basic Military Training : 1 years at IMA, Dehradun.

(b) Technical Training:

1. Phase 1 Pre-Commission Training): 3 years at CME Pune, MCTE Mhow, MCEME Secundrabad.

2. Phase ll(Post Commission Training) : 1 year at CME, Pune, MCTt, Mhow, and MCEME, Seainderabad.

c) Award of Degree: The candidates are awarded Engineering after successful completion of st Pay Scale III of Training.

Cost of Training: The entire cost of training including bonks and reading is borne by the Army, cadets are also provided with free clothing and

Selection Procedure is as follows:

(a) Shortlisted candidates are called for Services Selection Board (SSB) interviews at Bhopal , Bangalore or Allahabad .

(b) Duration of SSB interviews is five days excluding day of arrival. During their stay at SSB, candidates are put through psychological Tests, Group Tests and interviews.

(c) Candidates are put through st Pay Scale I of the selection procedure on the first day. Only successful candidates are retained for balance of the testing. Candidates who fail to qualify in st Pay Scale I are returned on the first day itself. St Pay Scale 1 are psychologically oriented tests including intelligence tests.

(d) Successful candidate at the SSB are required to undergo medical tests lasting 3 to 5 days less Sundays and Gazetted holidays.

(e) Candidates recommended by the SSB and declared medically fit, arc nominated for training in the order of merit, depending on the number of vacancies.

(f) One second class return fare is admissible for the interview (To and Fro)

Stipend/Pay and Allowances: The candidates are given a stipend of Rs. 8,000/ - P.M. as is admissible to NDA cadets on completion of 3 years training. On completion of 4 years training they are commissioned in the rank Lt and entitled to pay scale as admissible to the rank. Application for a particular position should be made to appropriate authority. The advertisement in this respect is published from time to time in the employment news and in several leading national and regional local dailies. The tentative dates of advertisements are given in the eligibility section. Other details regarding the selection for a particular entry is also described in the eligibility section.

The individuals may either be selected for short service commission or for permanent commission. A Permanent Commission means a career in the Army till you retire. For a Permanent commission you have to join the National Defence Academy or the Indian Military Academy.

Apart from these recruitments under short service and permanent commission, the Army conducts rallies at various centres all over the country for selecting candidates to various ranks available in its various divisions.
