Sad News

Staff and students are saddened by the loss of a dear friend and colleague, Beth Zawisza. Beth battled cancer for the past few weeks, and died Friday evening surrounded by her family. Beth has been an integral part of City School for many years as a parent, substitute teacher, volunteer, and friend. Beth worked in our school every day and touched the lives of every child and adult. While we all miss her, we know that what she would want for us is to be strong and make the most of every moment. In the next few weeks we will provide opportunities for each of us to honor our dear friend. The services are planned for Saturday, February 11th, and we will provide more details as we get them.

Spotlight on The Travelers

The Travelers have been studying the properties of matter for science
this term. On Wednesday, we filled a beaker with snow and put in on a hot
plate. We all predicted what we thought would happen and how long it
would take. We all observed the transformation from a solid to a
liquid and finally a gas!

Path

Each year the City School staff participates in VEHI's school employee wellness opportunities that are designed to assist school employees reduce their health risks. City school has 146 staff members participating in the program!

The PATH (Planned Action toward Health) program is a 10 week program that is packed full of health and fitness activities. This year's PATH adventure theme is called "Brainstorm". We kick off the adventure on Monday and will be wearing our "Brainstorm" shirts.

Join us for this 10 week wellness adventure on becoming brain fit!

Spotlight on The Investigators

Investigating the Red Flag

The Investigators team has been busy doing some detective work! Their most recent investigation considers the question: Why is the playground flag red or green?

For the past two weeks, scientists Emily, Nick and Daniel have been recording weather data and playground equipment observations twice daily. Dominick has uploaded their data to our science website. The entire community of scientists has been performing experiments involving, solids, liquids and changes that occur in matter to help explain the changes that occur to our playground. The community will be demonstrating some of their experiments at the next Culminating Event Celebration in February.

Dance Tonight (1/27) for Grades 6,7 and 8 sponsored by Team USA

Arrival and Dismissal from Dances!

Dances are held from 7 – 9 p.m.

Students will continue to enter through the gymnasium doors and sign themselves into the dance.

School Expectations (Safe, Achieving, Caring) remain at all evening events and that includes dances.

Dismissal from dances is the change. At the end of our dances chaperones and staff will walk students through the building to our front lobby. We will dismiss from there.

After all the parking lot changes we have noticed that the flow of traffic is natural and more light is provided. Safety is important and this change will be safer for all participants.

Please be prompt for pick up as staff and chaperones need to get home too. If your student does not have a ride home please don’t send themto our dances unless they have made arrangements before coming to the

dance.

String Concert Postponed

The String Concert scheduled for Thursday night has been rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 1:15 in the library due to the bad weather.

Communities Working Together

Team USA were pencil wasters! But on Thurs, a group of students from Team Imagination came and shared their project on saving pencils. They spoke to the entire team discussing why to save pencils and they gave us rules on how to save pencils. Team USA thanks them for helping us save resources.

Team USA also will welcome a few studets from Team Discovery to join us as we look towards creating, designing and funding a recreational area for the community. We will soon be visited by a grant writer from "Youth in Transition" who will team with us on this project.

Thanks to Team Imagination and Team Discovery for working with us! Good things can happen when the Teams become a community.

Spotlight on Team Imagination

This month Team Imagination has been learning all about weather. At morning meeting the students have been discussing and keeping track of the different types of weather and learning more about reading the temperature on a thermometer. The students have also been keeping a weather journal and making observations and predictions about the weather using student related weather websites offered through www.weather.com. If you happen to be in the back hall by Mrs. VanGuilder and Mrs. Konrad's classrooms check out the new Team Imagination weather wall. Students on team Imagination will be taking turns being the daily weather reporter recording the local and national weather, sunrise and sunset, and the moon phases.

Reminder to 8th Graders! The Deadline for the Yearbook Cover Design Contest is this Friday! Put together a drawing or design for your yearbook and get it to Ms. Maguire in Dynamic Design ASAP! Your work could make the cover of the yearbook!

News from Team USA

On Wednesday, Team USA will be visited by Mr. Jeff Bean who will work with the students on constructing 3 D models of Skate Parks. The students will compete in companies and the winning bid, based on design and cost, will be presented to the City Council. In other news, the energy Committee is preparing to host the CEO of VEC. He will present the proposal on sustainable energy that he will be presenting to his shareholders.. The Team is also preparing to make kits designed for Home Energy Audits. We will announce when they are ready for use.

String Concert

The concert takes place tonight(1/26) at 7:00pm in the library

News from Mrs. Aliquo's and Mrs. Provost's Classes

Mrs. Aliquo's and Ms. Provost classes took a virtual field trip to a museum in Ohio where they recreated an 1825 lighthouse. Both classes have been working on proportional reasoning through project based learning. This trip and activity was a nice addition to the creating of the Giant that they had been working on. Well done!

Nominate the Franklin Central Supervisory Union

To enhance education in the areas of math and/or science.

America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education is a program sponsored by the Monsanto Fund

that gives eligible farmers the opportunity to grow the next generation by nominating a

rural public school district to apply for a grant to enhance education in the areas of math

and/or science. The Franklin Central Supervisory Union (FCSU) is on the list of

eligible regions. All we need now are eligible farmers to nominate the FCSU.

The FCSU would like to apply for a grant. You can help our school district become an

America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education winner by encouraging all local farmers to

nominate the FCSU.

Grants will be awarded based on merit, need and community support. The more

farmers to nominate our school district, the more it demonstrates community

support and strengthens our application.

Spotlight on The Explorers

On Friday the 20th the Explorer team said goodbye to Ms. Hellen. Ms. Hellen was the third grade homeroom teacher and the math teacher for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade Explorers while Mrs. Cox was on maternity leave. She has a gift for mediating conflicts and allowing children to explore and find solutions to problems by themselves or with their peers. Ms. Hellen was an asset to the Explorer team in particular and to the school in general. We will miss Ms. Hellen and wish her well in her new teaching job at Georgia Elementary and Middle School..

For 8th Graders and their Parents

Mrs. Hutchinson is coming to the SACS Cafeteria to talk with 8th grade students and their parents about high school course selection at 6:30 this evening (1/25).

She will also be here on 1/26 to talk to 8th graders during PE classes.

BFA Fine Arts Performance

The BFA Dance, Chorus, and Jazz Band will be performing today in the big gym at 1:30 for SACS students.

St. Albans Little League Registrations

St. Albans Little League will begin ONLINE registration for the 2012 baseball and softball season for boys and girls ages 5-12 and for registration for the preseason baseball and softball clinics. Academy Cheer Challenge

The Cheerleaders in grades K-8 are busy preparing for their first competition held here in St. Albans at the Collins-Perley Sports Complex Hosted by BFA Cheer. The challenge is Saturday 2/4 at 12:00pm. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for children. Please come and support the Cheerleaders!!

Important Bus Notice

This is a notice to parents of students in grade 1-8 who get on and off the bus at 100 Lower Welden.

Due to overcrowding on Bus #1, we are having to change the 100 Lower Welden st. bus stop to another bus. Starting on Monday January 23rd Bus #5 will now be picking up (AM) and dropping off (PM) the students who get on and off ar 100 Lower Welden St. They should continue to wait at the same spot and the time of pick up will remain approximately the same. Drop off time will be at 3:05PM.
Please be looking for BUS #5, bus driver: Tina starting Monday January 23rd.

News from Yearbook 2012

Yearbook Cover Design Contest

Attention 8th Graders: The Yearbook Staff is hosting a contest to design this year's yearbook cover. Any 8th graders may enter a design. This year's theme is "Time to Rewind." These are the requirements:

- 8 1/2 x 11" sheet of plain paper, any color (no lined or graph paper)

- You may use any materials/medium (marker, colored pencil, computer, etc.)

- The school name and year will be added in afterward - please do not include them in your design, but consider leaving space for this text.

- Do NOT put your name on the front of your drawing/design. (Please put it on the back.)

- The design or drawing must be school appropriate and should reflect the theme or our school.

The deadline is Friday, January 27th. Please give submissions to Ms. Maguire in Dynamic Design. The Yearbook Committee will announce the winner(s) after the deadline - We hope to have many entries to choose from!

News from Dynamic Design

Dynamic Design continues our stewardship effort of sustainable fundraising for St. Albans City School. We just sent out our second shipment of Box Tops for Education collected by the school community. This shipment alone was equal to $541.50. We are now over a total of $1000.00 for our school, and we are only halfway through the year! Also, keep your eyes peeled for more details about a February Box Top contest for homerooms, with a prize for the winning homeroom. Keep up the great work and send in the Box Tops for Education found on products in your home!

We are also collecting and submitting Labels for Education. Please note: Make sure you are cutting out the entire label with the bar code on Labels for Education - the portion to clip is usually surrounded by a dotted line. Thanks!

Wednesday evening Team USA hosted a Button Up Conference for Franklin County at BFA. The event went well. The presentor, from Burlington, commented on the maturity, good questions and social skills of Team USA. This event, and others will be co-hosted by the Town school as well. If any one is interested in gathering information on Button Up energy saving ideas, please contact Team USA. We are learning to do home energy audits and will make that service available as well.

Family Virtual Field Trip Night

Fuel Up to Play 60

Fuel Up to Play 60 is a program that our school participates in. It encourages healthy eating and 60 minutes of movement everyday. To find out more go to http://www.fueluptoplay60.com/. They are having a contest to see which school can get most students signed up and tracking their healthy eating and activity and we are hoping that we can be that school! We came in second in the whole state of VT last week and we would like to keep the momentum going! If students need help signing up they can see Mrs. Gunter or Mrs. Trainer. We have some prizes for students who are tracking regularly!

Exciting Compost News!

Here is a portion of an email from Tom Reynolds, Programs Coordinator for The Northwest Solid Waste District.

"Here is the list of compost results. Over 8 tons of food waste diverted from the landfill with an average of 3 pieces of non food waste per week.

If St. Albans City School had 500 meals per day or 2500 meals per week. I pick up compost containers once a week or 18 times for a total of roughly 45000 meals and the students and staff had only 59 pieces of contamination. The school would have achieved well over a 99% success rate with diverting only food waste in their compost program. Well the facts are in- St.Albans City Elementary School DID ! Add that to the schools ‘Job Well Done’ list."

News from 6th Grade Math

All 6th graders just completed a project based learning activity called "The Hand of a Giant". Students were given just the hand print of a giant. They had to determine the height of the giant just from this hand print. They were given no other information. They worked in cooperative groups and use the concept of proportional reasoning to find the giant's height.

News from Mrs. Dean's Class

Mrs. Dean's 4th grade class took a virtual field trip to study area and perimeter of two dimensional shapes on Tuesday. The students represented our school by exceeding expectations around active listening ,working collaboratively, and really knowing their stuff! Great job!

News from the Explorers

During WIN time on Tuesday the 10th of January the Explorers played Jeopardy on the topic of Matter. During the game, they had to answer questions about the different states of matter, how matter can change from one state to another, and results from experiments that they had observed and conducted. Some of the questions were pretty hard when they were asked about things like sublimation, viscosity, and Bose-Einstein condensate. However, the Explorers were up for the challenge and they had a fun time in the process.

Talent

Raiders Got Talent came to a close on Friday with our many winners receiving their trophies. It was so exciting to see how much talent SACS students have, and how supportive everyone was of their friends. Thank you to our performers and audience - keep practicing because we can't wait to do it all over again next year! Rock on, SACS! You are all winners in our books!

The Kindergarten Classes read many books about Gingerbread Men. They culminated the week by making Gingerbread Houses.

Beginning Band Concert

The Learning Kitchen

We are very excited to announce that we recently applied and were approved to host a program called "The Learning Kitchen." The classes will begin in April. Here is a short description from the Hunger Free Vermont/Learning Kitchen website:

"In a series of six classes, 8-15 participants receive instruction in meal planning, budgeting, shopping, and cooking from area chefs and trained nutrition educators. At the end of each class, participants take home free ingredients to make the recipes at home."

This class is for students in grades 5-8 and space is very limited. If you are interested in learning more about the class, or would like to be a part of The Learning Kitchen please contact Mrs. Trainer or Mrs. Gunter at 527-0565 ext.1102 or by email: gunterd@fcsuvt.org

Beginning Band Concert

The concert that was scheduled for Thursday evening will take place this afternoon (1/13) at 1:30 in the library. It will be videotaped and posted to the school website.

Virtual Learning

Last night Mr. Galle hosted a Virtual Learning Informational session for 7th and 8th grade students and their parents who have expressed an interest in taking middle school and high school courses online. In his half hour presentation, Mr. Galle, who teaches a virtual class himself, went over the basics of online learning and how to go about the sign up process. He then made himself available to answer questions and help sign the students up for virtual learning on one of the many computers in the SACS Library computer lab. Many of the students in attendance were interested in signing up for Mr. Galle's online class! The turnout for this meeting was excellent - Thank you to parents and students for coming out!

The Flipped Classroom with Mr. Clark & Mr. Allen

Mr. Allen and Mr. Clark have begun to change their teaching. They are working on what is called the Flipped Classroom. The Flipped Classroom changes the standard way of teaching a lesson in class and then sending the students home to practice that without guidance. If they receive guidance, it is from their parents and the parents weren't there for the lesson and odds are, were taught in a different way then their kids were. In the Flipped Classroom, the students watch a lesson at home via our Youtube channel and come to class with questions and or knowledge about the skill taught. Students in the Flipped Classroom will also apply their new skill in a class practice activity and then in their actual classwork. Students without internet access are give ample time in class to watch the lesson providing equal opportunity. The lessons also provide opportunities for struggling students to rewind a lesson or even go to a part that need to focus on.

Team USA members decided to have a crazy dress-up day. The clothes that were worn were from our Barn visit earlier in the year. The idea behind the day is that what a person wears or looks like should not affect how they are treated.

Team USA's Energy Committee is teaming up with SATEC to host a Button Up VT Clinic. This program is to help homeowners, to save money, and energy during the Winter months. If you are interested, come to the BFA Tech Center room 208 on Wednesday January 18th from 6:30-8:30pm. Students will be there to greet you and show you to the clinic.

Channel 15

One of the goals for Team USA this year was to produce a news show for the school. The group, Team USA Raider Report, published the first show. This has been a huge undertaking. The amount of time capturing video, editing, organizing and producing the show is much more than we anticipated. We have been working with our local cable access, Channel 15. As we move forward we hope to get a monthly show completed. We have learned a lot from our first show, and we will only improve the product as we continue. Look for our next show to be airing in January.

News from Tech Squad

Before the holiday break, The SACS Tech Squad took a virtual field trip to The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Ohio.The focus of the trip was the use of technology in hip-hop music. The trip took them through the history of hip-hop music, from it's inception on the streets of the Bronx, all the way through today. They were able to see how technology assists not only hip-hop artists when producing a track, but also the DJ's that play the music. At the end of the field trip, the students were even able to make their own hip-hop track with the help and the virtual trip guide and software that is used by many recording artists today.

School Mall ends on Friday. Students should bring their completed booklets to lunch with them on Friday to hand in and recieve their prize.

News From Kindergarten

Ms. Lawyer's Kindergarten class had a surprise visit from Dr.Einstein and Dr. Dynamite the very famous "Mad Scientists" . The Science lesson was about solids and liquids. After much scientific discussion, the Kindergarteners assisted the doctors in making "ooblek".

The Kindergarten students spent time outside last week enjoying the fresh snow and sliding on the playground slopes.

Did you know we have a SACS School Store?

It is called the Raider Treasure Chest and is run by the Voyagers 6th grade students.

The Voyager students do the ordering, stocking, pricing, selling. counting money, and inventory.

The Raider Treasure Chest is located in the Art Gallery just outside the cafeteria.

It is open every Friday during lunch time. Students are allowed to go shopping when they have finished eating their lunch.

Store Items Include:

colorful pencils, mechanical pencils, assorted pens, all kinds of erasers, fun pencil toppers, pencil sharpeners, small note pads, pencil pouches, magnetic locker buddies, and more

These items range in price from 25 cents to $1.

Third Grade Paper Challenge

On Thursday, the third graders received a big math challenge from Mrs. Cavallo. The second graders have pencils, now the third graders have paper! Before getting their challenge, the third graders first needed to understand a few vocabulary words related to paper, like case and ream. They learned that in years past, we have just estimated how much paper we used as a school. This year, the third graders are going to find a way to track how much paper the school uses for the rest of the year. Mr. Pelkey will be reporting to the third grader teachers each time he takes down a case a paper, which the third graders now know contains 5000 sheets of paper. They will work on this for the remainder of the school year meet again in June to share what their strategies were and what they came up with! Good luck, third graders!

News from Team USA

On Thursday, the Energy Committee from Team USA will be meeting with an energy committee from St. Albans Town School in Council Chambers in City Hall. The purpose will be to coordinate the hosting of a county-wide Button Up Conference for home owners on how to weather proof their homes. The date and time of the conference will be published for all citizens who want to attend.

On Wednesday, Team USA sponsored a '"Candy" hunt for their Kindergarten Buddies. They also sponsored a visit from Usa the Team USA Dog mascot.

Parking Note for Parents and Staff

We are trying to make morning drop off and afternoon pickups go a little smoother. Cars have been parking in the Fire Lane in front of the school. These lanes need to be clear at all times. For the past couple of weeks, we have been putting out orange cones to try and have traffic flow a bit smoother. We will continue to do so, as to not allow cars to be left unattended. This is not a school rules, it is illegal to park in Fire Lanes. We have for parents who wish to come in the building, the entire first row of the parking lot in front of school reserved for parents and visitors for morning drop off and afternoon pick up. Thank you for your cooperation.

Open Doors

The Open Doors dance class on Wednesday is still meeting. It will be meeting until Wednesday, February 1st.
On the last day of class (Wed, Feb 1st) the dancers (1st/2nd graders) will perform in the big gym before the boys basketball game.
The game starts at 4pm. so dancers will perform shortly before 4pm.

The dancers are having a lot of fun and working hard learning their routines.
There was so much interest in this dance class that we already have a full class
of new participants for the Spring!

Please be aware that the registration form is now available for a class that is
being offered to support the school's drama production.
This class is called Back Stage Pass and is open to 5th-8th graders. It will begin before the end of January.
Registration forms for this class are available in the cafeteria, on our webpage,
at the front lobby or the Open Doors office.

There will be a separate registration form for new Open Doors classes, however these registration forms will be available mid Feb so stay tuned! We have many exciting classes
lined up for the Spring: knitting, watercoloring, Spanish classes....to name a few.

7th Grade Math Students Start Storage Project

7th graders from all three 7/8 learning communities started the new year by kicking off a unit on surface area and volume. The students gathered in the library to hear about the problem, brainstorm questions, and plan a way to solve the problem. They did a nice job jumping into the problem and had the opportunity to explore the problem with other communities. A leadership group was selected and this group will make sure the project will be completed in a timely manner. The bulk of the work will be know be completed within in the communities during the next two weeks, but they will reconvene to share their final solution with the appropriate audience.

What's Been Happening Over Break

Even though school hasn't been in session, there has been a lot going on at SACS over break. When you come back you might notice that the stage in the big gym has been refinished, our hallways have been painted and touched up, our floors have been polished, and there was some balancing done our ventilation.

Sad News

We lost a very important member of our SACS family over the break. Our dear friend, Jo-An Baillargeon, who managed our kitchen for many years, passed away unexpectedly. Her absence will noticed by all our staff and students. Teachers and staff will be speaking with students about "Jo-An's" passing first thing Monday morning in order to prepare them before they go to the cafeteria for lunch. We wanted to share this information with our families so that you will have a chance to speak with your children before they come back to school. Jo-An's enthusiasm and generosity of spirit will be greatly missed by all. Our thoughts go out to her family at this time.

All four 4-6 learning communities worked hard making beautiful gingerbread houses on Wednesday.

News from Team Imagination

The 2nd graders on Team Imagination took part in a book auction called “Retell It to Sell It”!!! Each student created a written retell of their favorite book from the classroom. They also included the components of a story and then illustrated their favorite scene. After presenting their book to the class, the students were then allowed to bid on the books. Mrs. Konrad brought math to the event by having the bidders keep track of their money and make change. The books went to the highest bidders and will remain in their independent reading boxes until the next auction. It was a fun, creative way for the students to put their money skills to practice and use their retelling strategies to hook other readers in the class!

News from Dynamic Design

For the Holiday Season, the neighboring Dynamic Design and Investigators Learning Communities continued their tradition of building "Big & Little Buddy" relationships and celebrating the season! The Dynamic Design "Big Buddies" (7th-8th graders) led their Investigator "Little Buddies" (1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders) through six activities in all the classrooms. The activities included making coffee-filter-snowflakes, Reindeer goodie bags, a telling of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas'" with their own story books to color, games and puzzles, ornament making, and cookie making. In the afternoon, every student was able to frost, decorate, and most importantly eat their own cookie. Everyone had lots of fun - our buddies truly enjoy their time together and build lasting relationships!

Kindergarten Holiday Program

The Kindergarten Holiday Program was a huge success! They played to a packed house, singing six songs and ending with a dance to Shake Up The Happiness by Train. If you know the song, ask your child to teach you the steps.

SACS Assembly

It was a big day on Tuesday for St. Albans City School, with many things to celebrate. The entire school gathered in the gym, as the Senior Band, led by Mr. Mehaffey, played them in. Students from Team Renaissance presented a banner to the Investigators team for being the team that donated the most non-perishable food to the Cram the Complex food drive. Mrs. Lucas announced the top ten students in the SumDog competition. Mrs. Cavallo introduced the new Estimators cup trophy and announced that Mrs. Dean's class from Team Triumph won the Holiday Estimators Cup challenge and will be able to display the trophy until the next competition. Representatives from each of the 7/8 communities had a chance to speak about the fund raising efforts made by our school, such as the penny war and the October 7th and 8th grade dance, to benefit the people who were affected by tropical storm Irene last summer. They also were able to speak on how the school came together to decide that all of the money raised by our various fundraisers should go to benefit The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont (NOFA-VT) because by helping the farmers, everyone in Vermont gets the benefit of fresh, local food. Finally, a check was presented by three third grade students from The Travelers team for $1866.14 to Enid Wonnacott, the executive director of NOFA-VT. She thanked the SACS students for the support and spoke about some of the devastation felt by local farms and how much they appreciate the support given to them by our school.

News from Team USA

Team USA's students, Kaitlin, Dylan, and Tyler ranked 32nd out of 77 schools who competed in an online stock market game. The game was held from the beginning of September and ran through the beginning of December. These students managed their portfolios throughout an extremely tumultuous real time stock market season. Their equity was $ 100,447.61! Congratulations!

The Humane Society of Franklin County needs yours help. Items they need include: Canned cat food, cat littler, dog kongs, six foot leashes, ten to fifteen feet dog tie outs, and prowl (dehydrated food). Please place the items in the blue bin outside the cafeteria or down by Team USA. Thank you!

News from SumDog

The 1-3 communities have just finished a Vermont and New Hampshire wide online Math contest called Sumdog. As a school, our students answered over 43,000 math questions correctly! This allowed for our school to finish in fifth place overall! Way to go St. Albans City Mathletes!

Pep Rally

Team Imagination hosted a Pep Rally on Monday morning centered around making healthy food choices. The rally started off with each 1st grade-3rd grade community recognizing a few Safe Acheiving and Caring Superstars with certificates. Team Imagination students then introduced the crowd to "Choose My Plate" which is the USDA's guideline for healthy eating. Students from the team came out dressed as different types of food ranging from fruit, vegetables, milk, and grains to candy, french fries and soda. Students in the audience had a chance to shout out either "Put it in my plate" or "Only Sometimes" depending on what kind of food was presented. By the sounds of the shout-outs, SACS students definitely know how to make healthy choices!
