Breeding Journal 1

Hi guys today I will start blogging about my English Budgie Breeding Journal that I started to keep and record on January 24, 2012. (see video below). I set this pair of Budgies that are more than a year old on the morning of January 24, 2012.

My setup consists of;

1. Breeding Cage that is at least 24"X 16"X 16"
2. Cuttlebone
3. Vitamin Block
4. Iodine Drops in Water
5. Good Seed and Pellet diet
6. Conditioning Supplement (Kaytee or Petamine)
7. Sturdy Perches
8. A Nest Box for English Budgies
9. Water
10.Wood or Organic Bedding (no dyes)
11.Charcoal
12.UV Full Spectrum Light (if breeding indoor0

Prior to setting them up I conditioned the pair by providing them with a good balanced seed diet and a few drops of iodine in the water. I made sure that they had the conditioning supplement in their seed or pellets daily. I conditioned them for about 2 weeks. I first introduced the female to the breeding cage and let her get familiar with the surroundings. I then placed the male in a separate cage and placed it nest to the breeding cage. I let them see each other for about 4 hours and then I place the male in the breeding cage. At first they might not seem that they like each other but if they are in top shape the male will start to chase the female around. From my observation I learned that the male started to chase and feed the female after 3 hours of placing them together. He then began to stand near the nest box and tap its beak on the wooded entranced. This gets the females attention and begins to check out and acknowledge the nest box. ( see video journal below)

I haven't posted here in years but it is about time I start blogging again. I really love to write about budgies. I currently have a youtube channel called Allaboutbudgies
I post everything my budgies do. At the moment I am keeping a breeding journal.
When I started this blog I kept and bred the standard pet budgie or parakeet but now I keep and breed the English or Show budgie. I love them both and I think they make great pets.

Not that Compatible

Im getting convinced that my budgies are not compatible. The female seems to be more dominant and pecks at the male. Im confuse a bit because the budgies at time seem to be fond of each other but all of a sudden they fight. I may need to get another pair and set them with different partners. Its been a couple of years since i bred my budgies and I'm kind of rusty at breeding.

Changing the subject, I've been trying to find a spangle for my breeding project. I have been to many local pet shops but none carry the spangle mutation. I have also gone to other breeders and have yet to find a spangle. They must not breed them in California. I would really love to have a sky blue spangle. like this one:

Breeding Budgies

I decided today that I will let my Budgies breed. I have provided them with a complete diet along with a nesting box. I bought the nest box from an ebay seller who also happens to have his own website. His website is really cool as well as great prices. Back to breeding my budgies, The female does not seem that interested and the male seems submissive. Its been a while since I bred my budgies and I forgot a lot about it. Hello, my name is Arthur and I feel very passionate about animals specifically birds. I currently keep about 5 Budgies (commonly referred as Parakeets), 2 Cockatiels, and a dog named sparky. I had seen a lot of people creating blogs and I could not help but to create my own. In past years I was a Budgie and Cockatiel breeder and currently have a clutch of baby cockatiels that I am weaning. I hope to share with you information and news about my pets every day, and hopefully create a blog worth viewing.
