The HP ProBook 4520s is a small and medium business notebook that replaces the older 4510s from last year. The new model bumps the configuration from the older Intel Core 2 Duo family of processors to the newer Intel Core line, including the Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. In this review we look at what's changed and how the latest model stacks up against its predecessor.

The HP ProBook 4520s has a clean and semi-rugged outside appearance; a step up from the previous generation model. The screen cover instead of being plastic on the 4510s is now brushed metal which feels stronger and looks much nicer. The new metal cover keeps a clean appearance, hides most fingerprints and resists mild scratching from day to day abuse. The inside gets the same treatment with the bronze, anodized, brushed-metal finish for its palmrest and speaker grill.

Besides those changes the notebook retains much of the same design as the previous model. The keyboard is a chiclet design with a glossy black plastic inlay, continuing to the screen bezel which shares the same look. The bottom of the notebook has the same clean design at the expense of removing access to all user-upgradable parts.

Build quality is very good and a step up from the older model. The brushed metal lid gives the 4520s some much needed strength and screen protection that the plastic lid on the previous model lacked. The palmrest and speaker grill also gained some rigidity and now offer very little flex under strong pressure. The chassis as a whole feels very well built but still a step below full business notebooks like the EliteBook or ThinkPad series. The keyboard tray has some minor flex under pressure which wouldn't be a problem on the more expensive models.

Another area of questionable design is the lack of upgrade access which has its strengths and weaknesses. The solid bottom cover has very little flex, which you might find if the bottom was covered in individual panels. On the other hand, the lack of access makes it more difficult to replace defective components or upgrade items down the line.

Screen and Speakers
The ProBook 4520s comes equipped with a 15.6" anti-glare display with a 16:9 widescreen ratio. At 1366 x 768 pixels, this 720p high-definition display is perfectly usable and features good color and contrast. We know many people are concerned about the transition from 16:10 to 16:9 ratio screens (because this means less vertical resolution) but the difference is so minor that the vast majority of notebook users will never have a problem.

Horizontal viewing angles are quite impressive and you only start to notice some color shift after you get 75 degrees off center. Vertical viewing angles are only average as the screen begins to wash out from above and colors begin to invert from below after about 45 degrees in either direction. The matte finish really helped out a lot with the steeper viewing angles, since glossy panels can sometimes pick up reflections that overpower the screen at certain viewing angles.

The speakers on the HP ProBook 4520s performed roughly on average with other small and medium business notebooks. Compared to most consumer notebook speakers they left a lot to be desired, but for light music listening or catching your favorite TV show streaming on the road they should be more than adequate. Peak volume levels were fine for a small or medium size room. Bass and midrange were lacking, but that was par for the course with most notebooks in this class.

The full-size keyboard on the 4520s shares the same design as the one found on the 4510s and provides fantastic spacing between keys for typing as well as a dedicated number pad (a major plus for businesses that use their computers for number crunching or data entry). Each key is relatively flat with a nice matte texture and the keys sit above a glossy black support frame. The support frame surrounding the keys is quite firm thanks to the design of the chassis which adds additional support for the keyboard. The only obvious area of flex in the keyboard is when you press on the number pad keys. Keep in mind, however, that we received a pre-production unit, and HP claims that the production units shipping to customers have even better support against flex.

The individual key presses are quiet without loud clicking sounds as you type. The depth of each key press is excellent, though some people may dislike the flat, chicklet-style keys. Overall the keyboard layout is extremely nice for a 15-inch laptop.

HP updated the touchpad on the 4520s from the older 4510s, with the notebook now including a button-free Synaptics ClickPad. The primary difference is a larger surface to use for making gestures and a cleaner appearance without additional buttons. With that said, we experienced some difficulties adjusting to the new format. If you are a notebook user who likes to rest their fingers on the touchpad buttons while you move your cursor around the screen you will be in for a world of surprise. Even in the defined touchpad button zones the touchpad picks up your stationary finger input and tries to incorporate it into a multitouch gesture. Pinch zoom is the gesture that most frequently activates, although even after all multitouch gestures were disabled we still noticed the cursor would "hop" around the desktop. This is very similar to the experience we had with the Dell Inspiron 11z which had an Elantech button-free touchpad. Making the touchpad button areas a "dead zone" would completely resolve this problem.

Overall the touchpad was very sensitive and easy to use (not including the aforementioned problems). Tracking speed was excellent and we had no problems with input lag. Multitouch gestures were quickly recognized and worked smoothly. The touchpad refresh rate was very high, allowing us to draw fast circles with very little trailing effect on the cursor. If the touchpad didn't have the problems associated with the left and right buttons with fingers resting on the surface, it would have been one of the nicer models we have used on a notebook.

Ports and Features
Port selection on the HP ProBook 4520s is good for a small-business notebook but it seems there is room leftover that could have been used for additional ports. The notebook has three USB 2.0 ports, one eSATA/USB combo port, VGA and HDMI-out, LAN, dialup modem, and audio jacks. The system also features an ExpressCard/34 slot and SDHC-card reader for expansion.

If you're looking for a thin and light 14-inch business notebook, what better person to ask about it than someone who owns several? Keep reading to find out what one of our regular contributors has to say about the ThinkPad T420s.

I had planned to keep my Dell Latitude E6410 (reviewed here) for a while, partly to avoid the migration to a 16:9 display. Maybe it was the arrival of the next generation of hardware or maybe I’m getting too old to enjoy carrying the E6410 with its 9-cell battery, but I started to look around. The Dell E6420 quickly disqualified itself from consideration because it was even heavier than its predecessor. I wanted a 14-inch display with 900 vertical pixels which limited the choices. The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 claimed to be a bit lighter than the Dell, although I never trust manufacturer’s weights, but the ThinkPad T420s would definitely be lighter and worthy of consideration.

I then had to do my homework to figure out the potential drawbacks of the T420s, particularly in terms of the compromises caused by the lower weight and reduced thickness. I decided that it was worth the risk and when a Lenovo Easter 10% off voucher appeared I placed an order.

This review makes references to both the review of the ThinkPad T410s and my review of the Dell E6410.

The difference between the measured and advertised weight could be explained by the possible use of a minicard (micro SATA) SSD instead of a 2.5-inch HDD or SSD. Compared with most advertised notebook weights, Lenovo’s weight is plausible.

Build and Design
The T420s has a very similar appearance and layout to its predecessor, the T410s. It is slightly wider with a reduced front-to-back depth in order to better accommodate the wider display. The internal hardware has been upgraded to use Intel’s Sandy Bridge platform , the main storage bay uses the recently introduced 7mm thick 2.5” drives instead of 1.8-inch devices and a USB 3.0 port replaces the USB 2.0 / eSATA combo port. Two notable design features of the T420s are that the battery is at the front (under the right palm rest) and most of the ports are on the back. The keyboard is located as near the screen as possible which provides space for generous palm rests and a large touchpad.

The T420s comes in what appears to be black or dark grey matte paint depending on the lighting, with a few hints of colour (red trackpoint stick and highlights on trackpoint buttons plus blue ThinkVantage and enter keys) to provide a little contrast. There are no shiny surfaces to show every fingerprint.

The T420s almost meets my preconception of the ThinkPad build quality. The notebook is built from a combination of metal alloy and carbon fibre to provide a suitable balance between strength and weight. However, there is some flex on the base under the optical drive; one can squeeze the bottom of the display between the hinges when the notebook is closed (that’s where I hold the computer when carrying it), there’s some looseness of the battery and the optical drive rattles in the bay (a side effect of the extra height so that a 9.5mm HDD in a caddy can also fit). The hinges have just the right amount of stiffness to hold the display securely without needing much force to adjust it and the keyboard has a positive action without any bounce. The display does flex a little and it is possible to apply enough pressure on the back to cause some ripples on the screen.

The main hard disk / SSD sits in a cage with rubber runners that provide both shock and vibration isolation. This is a different arrangement to on the Dell E6410 where the HDD is fixed directly into the chassis. Below is a photo of the HDD / SSD caddy with rubber runners.

The T420s is slightly wider than the Dell E6410 but has less front-to-back depth. When placed side-by-side with the Dell E6410 the difference in thickness is not very noticeable. One reason for this is that the T420s has longer feet that raise it above the table but don’t affect the travel thickness.

I haven’t tried removing the base of the T420s. It doesn’t have the convenient one piece removable base of the Dell. There is a cover for the memory, WiFi and WWAN or mSATA while the main storage device comes out at one side.

The M17x is now in its third iteration with the R3 edition. Unlike its predecessors, the R3 has a single graphics card; to get a dual graphics card setup (AMD CrossFireX or Nvidia SLI), you need to step up to the monstrous 18.4-inch M18x. Still, the M17x R3 packs serious firepower as configured. Options include the slightly faster i7-2720QM processor (the i7-2630QM is standard), AMD Radeon HD 6970M graphics card with a whopping 2GB of its own memory (a 1GB HD 6870M is standard), the upgraded Intel 6300 AGN wireless card, and the 1.5TB RAID 0 hard drive array.

Build and Design
Alienware notebooks showcase the most unique designs on the market; the M17x R3 is no exception. Its ultra-modern exterior looks like it was based off of a military stealth aircraft. The M17x R3 is also available with a red exterior.

Its AlienFX LED lighting system is seamlessly integrated into the chassis and takes the design to the next level. The colors of every single light on the notebook, even the caps/number lock indicators, can be customized with a dazzling array of colors. The keyboard is composed of four separate lighting zones. For even more fun, the lighting can be set to morph between two different colors or strobe. And of course it can be fully shut off. It's just too cool.

The M17x R3's build quality is good though almost exclusively uses plastic; its predecessor made extensive use of aluminum. I miss the metal, especially on the lid backing. Despite this, the M17x R3 uses rather thick plastic that doesn't make a cheap rattling sound when tapped by a fingernail. In general there are very few flexible surfaces on the M17x R3 save for the media controls area above the keyboard.

The lid is well-supported by a strong hinge connecting it to the chassis. It resists twisting when gripped by the corners though flexes more than the old M17x since it has a plastic backing. On a positive note, the M17x R3 adopts a "soft touch" rubbery surface on nearly all viewable surfaces. It feels great and is easy to clean. The M17x R3 has impressive quality though its predecessor was a few notches more upscale.

Ports and Features
The M17x R3 has an outright arsenal of ports; it includes USB 3.0, HDMI in and out, DisplayPort, eSATA, and a pair of USB 3.0 SuperSpeed ports. The only item that's missing is an ExpressCard slot; the old M17x R1/R2 had one. All picture descriptions are left to right.

The starting price of the Inspiron 15R N5110 is only $499 at the time of this writing but that includes a slower Intel Core i3-2310M processor, less RAM, a smaller hard drive and only the standard 6-cell battery. The point here is that Dell offers a number of different configurations of the new Inspiron 15R.

The updated Inspiron 15R N5110 features a number of design changes compared to last year's Inspiron 15R. The overall look is essentially unchanged with a clean and sleek exterior, but at its core the 15R remains a budget laptop with a mostly plastic construction. The new 15R uses a hinge-forward LCD lid design that Dell first used in the premium Adamo series. I'm sure Dell designers will say it's a way of reducing the size of the screen bezel with a 16:9 ratio widescreen display. However, as far as most people are concerned, it just means the back of the notebook sticks out more behind the screen.

Build quality is generally pretty strong for a mostly plastic notebook, but you'll notice some minor flexing in the plastics if you firmly squeeze the notebook in your hands or press hard on the keyboard while typing. The main chassis, while reasonably strong, has a "hollow" feeling which makes you think there is some unused space inside this black box. Speaking of black, that's the standard color for the Inspiron 15R. You can select an optional "Fire Red" or "Peacock Blue" for an extra $35 when you order your laptop from Dell, or you can choose a more artistic lid for an extra $60. Honestly, I feel like customers should be able to pick black, red, or blue at no additional cost and the artistic lids should be half their current price ... but that's just my opinion. At least with the new "SWITCHable Lids" you can buy a fancy screen lid at a later time if you want.

One additional (and probably unintentional) benefit of the new "SWITCHable Lids" is that the screen is slightly more protected from exterior pressure. The new screen cover offers moderately more protection for the LCD than the old 15R, which means ripples don't show up as easily on this screen if you press on the back of the lid.

Anyone looking to upgrade the RAM inside the Dell Inspiron 15R will find the process is very simple. There is only one access panel on the bottom of the notebook secured by a single Phillips head screw and some plastic retention tabs. Remove that one panel and you can add or replace to the system memory. Unfortunately, removing the hard drive requires almost a complete disassembly of the notebook chassis.

When it comes to budget 15-inch laptops, Dell has a history of packing their notebooks with enough inputs and outputs to keep any tech enthusiast happy. The new N5110 is no exception. This Inspiron 15R features two USB 2.0 ports (one of which is an eSATA/USB combo port), two "Super Speed" USB 3.0 ports, HDMI and VGA-out, audio jacks, and Ethernet. It also featured a SDHC-card reader and a CD/DVD optical drive.

The new VAIO Y is a radical departure from last year's 13-inch Sony VAIO Y. I'm a little unsure why Sony doesn't just call this the "VAIO YB" on the official SonyStyle website, but despite the confusion over the model name this looks like another attractive Sony notebook. In terms of the overall size and shape, the VAIO YB has more in common with the VAIO W netbook than last year's VAIO Y. In truth, the new VAIO Y was designed to replace the Atom-based netbooks in Sony's lineup, and thankfully the VAIO YB has more to offer than those low-performance netbooks.

Build quality is on par with most 11-inch laptops we've tested like the HP Pavilion dm1z and the Acer Aspire 1830T. The plastics are thin yet firm; offering a combination of everyday durability and light weight. Although I wouldn't recommend playing a game of frisbee with this laptop, the plastics used in the chassis are probably strong enough to survivie a year or two of constant travel inside a school backpack. The plastic screen lid provides bends under significant pressure but you really have to press hard to create ripples on the screen. The lid also comes in your choice of silver or pink at the time of this writing. The best description I can give for the paint finish is "metallic matte" since it's shiny but doesn't show off fingerprints like a typical glossy notebook.

The bottom of the notebook features a single access panel secured by three screws. Behind that panel you'll find the RAM and hard drive in case you want to make any upgrades. Granted, most consumers who purchase a $550 laptop like this will probably be content with the 4GB of standard memory and the 500GB hard drive. Still, it's nice to know that Sony made it reasonably easy to replace the RAM and hard drive if you want to do that.

Ports and Features
Port selection on the VAIO Y is pretty standard for an 11-inch ultraportable notebook. You get three USB 2.0 ports, HDMI-out, VGA, Gigabit LAN, a microphone jack and a headphone jack. It also features a SDHC-card slot and Memory Stick slot for loading images off your camera while traveling. I'm a little sad to see there isn't a USB 3.0 port on this notebook (particularly since it costs $550. We're starting to see USB 3.0 on more consumer notebooks and there simply isn't a good excuse for not including it here. Here is a quick tour around the new VAIO Y (YB):

Laptops have become an integral part of our lives. However, the sad fact remains that all the laptops available in the market are not standardized. Each manufacturer has different sizes of laptops to offer and sometimes the size of the parts differ. This fact is not a problem, at least not until the laptop starts needing repairs or replacement parts. Since one laptop is quite different from the other, it is very difficult to repair them in the first place, or in case of a replacement, find a part for the specific type of laptop. Even a simple thing like a laptop keyboard, is different for different makes and models of laptops on the market.

The main problem that arises due to rigorous usage of laptop keyboards is of damaged keys. Sometimes, the port that connects the keyboard to the laptop inside also gets damaged. If the damage is of the connecting cable inside the laptop, there is not much repair work required. Repair is surely possible if there is a problem with some of the keys.

Every key in any keyboard has a spring like arrangement that allows the key to press the sensor below and show the typed words on the screen. Most of the problems with keyboards and their keys occur when it refuses to press the sensor below and the typed alphabet will not show on the screen. This can be rectified easily and does not need the help of a repair person. One can find an online guide and find out how to take the key out of its main body. Once you do that, you can see for your self what's wrong with the keyboard. Types Of Laptop Batteries

Throughout the years there have been many technologies involved with notebooks, and laptop batteries are no different. There are actually three distinct notebook battery types on the market today. Knowing the difference between them will help you decide on exactly what to get when the time comes for a purchase.

In this article I will discuss the three different laptop battery types, as well as some of the advantages each one carries.

Nickel Cadmium - NiCd batteries were actually the first rechargeable laptop batteries ever. Manufactures loved them because their cost was relatively low and they had a high output. You won't find Nickel Cadmium batteries being used anymore, due to them being heavier and not as efficient as the newer laptop batteries.

Nickel Metal Hydride - NiMH batteries can still be found all over the place -- particularly for older model laptops. The rechargeable NiMH laptop battery was a big step up for notebook technology mostly in part because they were more reliable than the NiCd batteries, and they had an even higher output. The NiMH battery was also cheaper to produce, and safer to use.

The only issue with NiMH batteries is that they can have a memory effect. Basically, if you don't fully discharge the battery, it can remember this and leave you with a less than perfect battery output.

Lithium Ion - LiON batteries are now used in most new laptops. Unlike the NiMH battery, LiON laptop batteries have no memory effect. LiON batteries are also lighter than both NiCd and NiMH notebook batteries. Both of these advantages equal out to the Lithium Ion battery being the most popular and most expensive among the various notebook power sources.

You are probably wondering which type of battery to get. Getting a Lithium Ion battery would be the best solution, and if you have the money that is what I recommend. If you cannot afford a LiON battery or your notebook is not compatible with one, then getting a NiMH battery is the next best thing.
