Jayaram's comedy entertainer Ulakam chuttum valiban is an upcoming Malayalam film directed by Raj Babu.

It stars Jayaram, Mithra Kurian in lead roles directed by Raj Babu is now set to release for Onam on September 8.

Ulakam Chuttum Valiban (UCV) has Jayaram, Mithra Kurian in the lead along with Suraj Venjaranmoodu, Vandana and Salim Kumar. The film is written by Krishnan Poojapura who has given many hits before and produced by Milan Jaleel of Galaxy Films.

Jayaram will now have a solo hero Onam release. Milan Jaleel is targeting theatres which had booked Mr Marumagan and King & Commissioner which were earlier slated for Onam.

The film starts with friends and family celebrating Kabir (Abhay) and Natasha’s (Kalki Koechlin) engagement. It’s straight out of a Hollywood rom-com where everyone gives a toast to the couple. It could have been sweet it the scene were brief. During this occasion we meet Buddy 2—Imran (Farhan Akhtar)—a happy-go-lucky funny guy with a secretive other side. The “third musketeer” Arjun (Hrithik) is missing. He’s too busy working; ambitious as he is to make wealth and retire at 40.

The three are to meet in Spain for a bachelor party before Kabir’s wedding. But the trip turns out to be more than just fun, with each going on the trip for a deeper reason. Through the journey, we see the buddies bond, sing-and-dance, romance, and fight. Something changes within each of them. Yes, comparisons with Hangover and Dil Chahta Hai are unavoidable. And there are some similarities (3 friends bonding, road-trip, over-bearing girlfriend, life-changing journey and so on); but that’s where the likeness ends.

Arjun meets Laila (Katrina) a gypsy-at-heart who loves sleeping under the stars, and preaches living in the present. Naturally she is not ambitious—because as the film’s sometimes simplistic characterization goes--the characters can only be either/or. Laila sweeps in like a pleasant breeze in Arjun’s life, but will he do anything about it? Meanwhile Kabir is full of anxiety over the impending marriage and Imran discovers a family secret that throws him off-course.

Zindagi… is a film exploring male-bonding. But these men are a treat for the women! Offered to the viewer are three well-bred boys, shirtless for a major part of the film, whose worked-out physiques are as much on display as their sense of humour.

Also, it’s interesting to observe how different a `guy’ turns out when directed by a woman. Writer-director Zoya Akhtar, who made the superb Luck By Chance, is in no hurry to make a “madcap comedy”. She revels in each scene, gives it the time and space to affect the viewer. The underwater diving scene is shot in a slow, meditative style, almost as if there was nothing more to say in the film but this. This style is also a metaphor for Katrina’s life philosophy of living in the moment. It’s just beautiful.

Or the sky-diving scene, where another director might have focussed on the thrill of the sport. Zoya, instead, chooses to show it’s deeper significance—the bonding, the weightlessness (as if the trip had made them so), and the spirituality of the sport.

The dialogue, while flowing with wit and intelligence, sounds affected in Hindi. These characters wouldn’t speak Hindi or use words like afsos (regret) and paintra (trick). The film doesn’t even allow the innocuous `So’, that many start a sentence with, directly translating it in Hindi as --`To…’. Consider this example – the guy asks the girl out for a drink. She says, “Mujhe subah jaldi uthna hai.” Nope, I don’t buy that her character would react like that. But a film has to be made in Hindi, so….

The film falters in its unstable characterization. Arjun’s transformation is too quick to be credible. Laila’s role just appears to be a catalyst in Arjun’s life and has no background, solid arc of her own. Again, Natasha’s character is puzzling – Kabir talks of the change in her after the engagement but we have no idea how/ why she changes so drastically.

You’ll be quick to forget these points, as there are many plusses. The film is technically marvelous – you soak in the expertness of the underwater photography and the director’s prowess in executing a mind-blowing finale around Spain’s bull-run festival.

The performances are one of the best in recent times. Hrithik Roshan gives the role his all. It’s just great to see him on screen after long. Farhan Akhtar is all set to become this generation’s pin-up. As his twitter handle goes (FarOut Akhtar), Farhan’s performance is indeed far out! Abhay is dependably superlative. Katrina is remarkable restrained and pitches in a commendable performance. Kalki enacts her bitter-sweet character with remarkable dexterity.

Finally, Zoya Akhtar ought to take a bow. In the age of jump cuts and quick transitions, she dares to make a film that’s not afraid of celebrating a scene thoroughly, unhurriedly. Those who get restless easily may want to carry along a dollop of patience. The film’s measured pace is, interestingly, both its strength and weakness.

Even if not entirely persuasive, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is enormously entertaining. Can’t miss!

One of the most eagerly awaited movies of the year in Mollywood is King and Commissioner.

In the film for the first time Mammootty's character he played in the The King, Joseph Alex IAS, will clash with Suresh Gopi's Bharathchandran IPS of The Commissioner fame.

Both the characters are creations of Renji Panikkar and the films concerned have been directed by Shaji Kailas.

Now 20 years after their split Renji Panikkar and Shaji Kailas are coming together with King and Commissioner. Mammootty will play the bureaucrat while Suresh Gopi enacts the role of the cop.

Jaya Prada and Sanjjanaa play female lead while Samvrutha, Jagathy, Devan, Salimkumar, Janardhanan and Vijayaraghavan are in the supporting cast.

DIRECTOR SPEAKSNikhil Advani began as an assistant to Aziz Mirza, Saeed Mirza, Kundan Shah, Sudhir Mishra and Manjul Sinha on the popular television serial Naya Nukkad (1994). He then went on to assist internationally and nationally acclaimed filmmaker Sudhir Mishra and co-wrote the screenplay of ‘Is Ratt Ki Subah Nahin’ (1996). The film dealt with the murky underworld and was widely believed to be the forerunner to Ramgopal Verma’s Satya (1998).

Just when he seemed to have sunk his teeth deep into parallel Indian cinema, Nikhil took on the daunting challenge of venturing into mainstream commercial Hindi cinema by joining Dharma Productions to work as an associate director on Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998, the directoral debut of his old school acquaintance Karan Johar. Then, following more experience working on the second films of Aditya Chopra (Mohabbatein – 2000) and Karan Johar (Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham – 2001), Nikhil was ready for his first foray as a director.

While the delightful Kal Ho Na Ho (2003) was refreshingly different in its treatment of a traditional love triangle with an undertone of tragedy, Nikhil’s second film Salaam-e-Ishq is an ode to love that is exuberant in its execution but ambitious in its aim to spin the genre of love stories on its head.

Nikhil’s third film, Chandni Chowk to China (2009) is the first ever Bollywood Kung Fu comedy that takes one on a madcap journey from the by-lanes of Chandni Chowk in Delhi, to Shanghai, the Great Wall and rural China, marrying in its wake hilarious gags, breathtaking action, spectacular locations and heart stirring emotions.

Patiala House (2011) Nikhil’s fourth directorial venture is a film based in Southall, London. It is the story of immigrants in London, a conservative and archaic point of view that is deemed outdated by a new generation that wants to integrate, rebel and spread its wings.

Delhi Safari (2011) is an upcoming 3D animation film directed and produced by Nikhil. The film features the voices of Govinda, Akshaye Khanna, Urmila Matondkar and Boman Irani. The film traces the journey of four animals and birds from Mumbai to Delhi with a message for all humans to show a bit of humanity.

All along, as Salaam-e-Ishq, Chandni Chowk to China and Patiala House have chugged along towards production, Nikhil has also established himself as a new age filmmaker of commercial films. Some of the more prestigious brands that he has shot include LG electronics, Airtel, HDFC Standard Life Insurance and British Airways.

Prakash Jha is known for his hard hitting realistic cinema. His previous ventures had different music directors: Raajneeti (2010) had Pritam, Aadesh Shrivastav, Shantanu Moitra and Wayne Sharp; Aparahan (2005) had Aadesh Shrivastav and Gangaajal (2003) had Sandesh Shandiliya. Prakash Jha's movies are sort of non-musica; he gives very little space for music in his films. Raajneeti’s super-hit songs ‘Bheegi Si Bhaagi Si’ and ‘Mora Piya’ were given very less screen space in the movie. For Aarakshan, Prakash Jha tries Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (SEL) and Prasoon Joshi (who had worked together for movies like Taare Zameen Par and London Dreams to name a few).
The soundtrack offers six tracks with four originals, one solo version and one remix. Out of four originals, three have been composed by SEL and surprisingly one fantastic classical number by lyricist-turned- musician Prasoon Joshi, who has made his debut as a music director in this movie.
The soundtrack opens with another soulful number by Mohit Chauhan with Shreya Ghoshal, named Acha Lagta Hai. The number is instantly catchy due to some brilliant lyrics by Prasoon Joshi. However the way it started, it straight away reminded me of ‘Mujhe Tum Chupke Chupke Jab Aise Dekhti Ho, Achi Lagti Ho’ from the movie Kuch Naa Kaho (2003) composed by SEL. But as the song progresses, it creates its own aura and carries on to be a decent hear. The remix DJ Suketu is passable.
Next comes, Mauka sung by Mahalaxmi Iyer, Raman Mahadevan, Tarun, Gaurav and Rehan. Mahalaxmi Iyer made her singing debut with Dus which was SEL debut as music directors in 1997. Since then, she has been the hot favourite for them. This is more of a situational-inspirational track which talks about giving a chanas (chance). It’s a track which will work more with the video. Again the lyrics create the high-point for the song, like ‘Kahi Jeet Milti Nahayi Huyi, Talcum Chidak Kar Aayi Huyi’.

Now sit back, relax and get ready for the only classical composition by Prasoon Joshi in the movie, Kaun Si Dor for which Pt.Channulal Mishra and Shreya Ghoshal have lent their voices. It’s one of those genres which require at least 4 to 5 hearings before it settles down in the memory of the listeners. Prasoon Joshi surprises everyone by his first unusual classical masterpiece and Pt.Channulal Mishra, who is one of the greatest and most gifted classical vocalists of India, brilliant even at the age of 75. Shreya Ghoshal gets an opportunity to showcase her versatility and she has done a brilliant job by standing tall with Pt.Channulal. It will be interesting to see how the song is used in the movie. The song has another version Saans Albeli, which is a solo version by Pt.Channulal Mishra. I expected the lyrics to be different in this one but it was same as in the duet version.
The last original song, Roshanee crooned by Shankar Mahadevan himself is a revolutionary track and is very much similar to SEL previous tunes in the movie Lakshya (2004), ‘Paega Jo Lakshya Hai Tera’, the title song and ‘Kandhon Se Milte Hai Kandhe’, especially the way it started and the chorus part in between every stanza. Roshanee is a trademark SEL composition which will go well along the narration of the movie and once again Shankar Mahadevan's voice reminds me of Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan at parts.
Mauka-Remix Version by Abhijit Vaghani disappoints and has nothing new to offer apart from some extra beats.
Overall, Aarakshan is more of a situational soundtrack (as expected out of Prakash Jha) and apart from ‘Achi Lagti Ho’, the other songs will not have a longer shelf life. Prasoon Joshi is excellent with his pen as always but sadly their combination failed to create the same magic as in Taare Zameen Par.

There is a lot of anticipation, there are a host of stars, then there is 'Thala' and this will be his 50th innings in Tamil!

Venkat Prabhu's 'Mankatha' has raised expectations by leaps and bounds among Ajith fans and film buffs. The film sees Ajith in a first-time ever full-fledged negative character, suggest reports closely associated with the film. Trisha will play female lead with Arjun chipping in as a CBI officer.

Andrea Jeremiah, Lakshmi Rai, Premji Amaran, Vaibhav, and Anjali will be seen essaying important roles. The film has been shot extensively from Chennai, Mumbai (particularly Dharavi), Hyderabad, Bangkok, and Macau. Ajith wrapped up his final day shooting from Hyderabad.

Even before the release of 'Mankatha' there are some rumours doing the rounds that some producers are eager for a Hindi remake, though nothing regarding this has been confirmed yet.

The film which deals with the gambling game will have the IPL matches as the backdrop and is expected to hit theatres around the Independence Day weekend.
