I got to see this grandfather of rap live last night. I liked the fact that he toured the world trying to share his message of 'work for peace, know thyself, be happy, stay safe' with such optimism and power. I also liked the fact that he tried to connect with his audience and that he looked happy to be there and share his music with everyone. Also, I loved the fact that he can still make music that sounds awesome and sells out concert halls.

Το συμπέρασμα που εφκάλαμεν; Οι πιο πολλοί θα το ξέρετε ήδη, για μέναν ήταν αφανέρωτο.
Τρία πράματα:
Έρωτας, Μουσική, Φιλοσοφία.
Που τούτα είμαστε καμούμενοι,
τούτα εν η ουσία μας ούλλους.
Τα άλλα ούλλα, εν το μεσοδιάστημα ανάμεσα στη
γέννηση τζε τον θάνατο.

Tους αθρώπους που αγαπώ, άμαν τους κουρτίσεις λίο ούλλους θα σου αρκέψουν για άλλο πράμα. Η
μιά εν της Φιλοσοφίας, η άλλη εν της μουσικής δε θα σε αφήσει ήσυχο, ο άλλος ούλλη μέρα μιλά

My mind is buzzing from the thoughts
that my friends knit in my mind today.
The conclusions?
Most of you may have already thought them up yourselves,
but for me they were previously a mystery.
Three things:
Love, Music and Philosophy.
This is the stuff from which we are made of.
The rest is just the space between
birth and death.

The people I love, if you provoke them a little bit, they will all start blabbing about the different things they are interested in. One of them, she's interested in philosophy, the other one will not stop talking about music, one speaks all day about love, understanding and acceptance, the others always go on about people and psychology, captain-backbeat is into everything, the girls always talk about relationships, me, the same, about animals, plants and loves. All day long, we push each other into talking about the things we love. This is our everyday life. Today was one of those usual days.

We talked about a lot of things.
We talked about the world,
about its problems,
about ours.
We talked about our lives,
that seek to take off,
about Good and Bad,
the Devil and God,
the Truth.
We talked about society
and our role in it.
We talked again about our dreams a little bit,
just generally,
about who we want to be,
how we want to live and why.
As always, we talked about Love,
how we want Love, how we love Love,
how it makes us feel alive,
how it reveals itself through different things,
why it's so difficult and peculiar sometimes.
We talked about Persian music
and about Turkish music
and about the ghazal
and about spoken word
and hip-hop,
we must have also mentioned our little plants that we have in pots in the kitchen
that we see them grow by the day and flower
and claim the space
so that we will soon have to cook on the floor!

What a wonderful thing to have people who love you and whom you love that are intelligent and creative and give you ideas and with whom you can give birth to ideas together, just so casually, with a cup of coffee and a smile, up close or even over the internet.
Such an amazing thing.
Even if we talk about things that other people thought before us, thousands of years ago,
even if we are treading beaten paths, its just as well that we have read about them, thought about them and shared them; for me it is such a joy and a brand new private discovery, both listening to them and speaking about them. It gives me hope.

Hade, its Spring, its beautiful and blossoming everywhere, and in two days I am going out to look for bats and watch them fly and buzz, after a long winter of hibernation. I wish you all a creative and beautiful weekend, and hope you all have long and inspiring talks with the people you love!

Rebetiko, and the tale of two mahallas

Last Sunday, I published an article on an Istabul-based rebetiko band called Tatavla Keyfi in Radikal, a Turkish daily newspaper. The story of this band is so intriguing, so inspiring, and so mahallas-like in essence that I thought the entire public in Turkey must read about it and find out more about the history of the music that this band plays and what kind of ideas and feelings they play with. Music perhaps doesn't have borders but unfortunately languages do, so it's a pity that the article could only be published only in Turkish. That's why I felt the urge to talk about what I wrote in the article also here on Mahallas. This whole story perhaps has nothing to do with Cyprus per se, but the cultural connection surely is there. I discovered Tatavla Keyfi randomly on a regular Youtube break off work and I was immediately fascinated by the very idea behind their existence - rebetiko! It is the music of the inbetweeners, the immigrants, the misfits, the Greeks that were stigmatized as 'Turks' in Greece and the Turks that were received as 'infidels' in Turkey. It is in fact a sub-culture, a way of life or even a whole philosophy on its own that surpasses the boundaries of a meagre musical genre. And these guys, all from Istanbul (except for Haris, who is from Athens, born and bred) are the first to make this music semi-popular and back in demand in the nightlife of Istanbul, just like it used to be in the 1920s and 30s.

What's most interesting about this band is, the name they call themselves, "Tatavla Keyfi", stems from a true mahallas inspiration. Tatavla is the name of an old mahalle in Istanbul which used to be inhabited predominantly by Greeks during the Ottoman times and until 1960s. During the early decades of the twenieth century , Tatavla was synonmous with the Tukish word keyif (or κέφι in Greek) which means "pleasure" in English, as the area was renowned for its lively nightlife and vibrant musical scene, dominated by songs in both Greek and Turkish. The band calls itself Tatavla Keyfi, "the pleasure of Tatavla" exactly for this reason, and tries to bring back the spirit of Tatavla and the authenticity of the old rebetika back in town.

The story of Haris Rigas, the bouzouki and baglama player of the band, is genuinely one of a kind. Haris is originally from Athens and had never seen Istanbul or spoken a word of Turkish until about five years ago, but after a brief visit to the city to attend a conference in 2005 he made a radical decision to settle in Istanbul. He has been living there since 2006, speaks nearly flawless Turkish, teaches Ancient Greek and Latin in the Bosphorus University and also pursues a PhD in the Political Science Department of the same university. On top of that, he performs old Istanbul and Izmir style, "Greco-Turkish" rebetiko songs with his band every Tuesday in Badehane. To cut this whole story short, we could just say that Haris is the perfect example of an individual who is pursuing a peaceful life in the "other" mahallas and loving it.

If hearing bilingual songs performed live and together by the kids of two different neighbourhoods sounds like an interesting experience to you, do go to Istanbul sometime and drop by Badehane on a Tuesday. At the end of the night, you will not be able to wait for the next time you can hear them.

I just came across this really interesting video clip from a band called OK Go .
The song is called "This Too Shall Pass" but honestly if you take a look at the video clip you probably won't give too much attention to the actual song ( at least the first time). This is the most interesting video clip I've seen for a while. I have no idea how is linked to the actual song. In any case, I just wanted to share this piece of art with you all.

Babutsa - London Calling 2009

"Babutsa", the name (in Greek and Turkish) of a juicy fruit particular to Cyprus, bestowed its title to the music band, which has proven to be a great hit both in Turkey and in Cyprus. The band, unusually formed of three soloists as opposed to a single lead, released their debut album in the latter half of 2009. The three members of the group Peri Aziz, Soner Türsoy and Ali Sönmez came together for this exciting and somewhat pioneering project. The members of the band, who like many other Cypriot ex-pats live in the UK, met in London and formed their own group.

The recording of the 12 songs that make up the album took place at the "London Sons Studios". Aside from the songs containing their own lyrics, the album entitled "London Calling" also contains songs composed by Raif Denktaş, Vangelis Perpiniathis, Ayhan Başkal, Türkan Altay, Ersay Hasan, Erdinç Gündüz and Buray Hoşsöz. By giving these popular Cypriot songs their unique rendition, Babutsa have managed to grab the attention of not only Cypriots around the world, but also of many people in Turkey who are often foreign to Cypriot music.

In the album every member recorded a total of 4 songs and demonstrated the high level of influence that they have each had from various styles of music including pop, rock, blues, reggae and some Greek tunes. In fact, one of the songs, "Gençlik Böyle Geçer"/"Ekatomiria" even contains a delightful blend of Greek and Turkish lyrics. However, "Yanayım Yanayım", recorded by Ali, which was the first release song and the song for which the first video clip was filmed has found its way to the top of the charts in Turkey and Cyprus and managed to find a place for itself on the tongues of many people from all walks of life. For those interested in experiencing a taste of Babutsa (no pun intended!), the band frequently hold numerous gigs in Cyprus, Turkey and the UK, the details of which can be found on their facebook fan page.

This Saturday, 16th January, MUAMMER KETENCOGLU and his band, Zeybek Enseble, will be performing at Rialto Theater in Limassol.

Muammer is probably one of the most important contemporary Turkish Musicians and deals with the natural relationship and mutual influence of Greeks and Turks in rembetiko music.He tries to build bridges of communication between Greek and Turkish sounds from Asia Minor and the Balkans.

His Zeybek Ensemble often perform in Greece as well as over the world presenting traditional music and songs from the East, Kapppadokia and rembetiko from Smyrna.

Songs will be in Greek and Turkish, sang by Deniz Ketencoglu and Panagiota Michaleli

As a continuation of an older post; the complete song "Beds are burning" is launched today (1st October) by Kofi Annan in Paris.

This is a specially re-recorded version of Midnight Oil’s ‘Beds are Burning’ as a global musical petition to demand climate justice at the UN’s Copenhagen Climate Change Summit in December. The song is also set to become the soundtrack of the Climate Justice movement.

‘Beds Are Burning’ was produced by The:Hours, and is to be made available on all major music download platforms for free.
