Elegant Cupcake Stands

Do you want to learn how to make this ELEGANT CUPCAKE STAND?

Just grab...

*a 1x8 slat of wood. (Any sz. slat of wood would work for your bases, it just depends how wide you want it.)

*a 2x2 slat of wood or a decorative spindle

*a pin nailer or wood glue

*paint and stain of your choice

*opt. some sort of finale topper (check your local craft stores)

First cut your two bases (you could do more than two) from your 1x8. I cut one 1ft long and another piece 1 1/2 ft. long to create a staggered effect.

Next take your spindle or 2x2 and cut them to create height in between each base.

I had this spindle laying around and decided to use the ends of it.

Chop into 2 pieces and attach it the like so....

Again if you can't find a spindle I think a 2x2 would work just fine for the middle and topper.

Next I cut my 2x2 into 4 one inch pieces for feet to give it more height.

Then simply sand and paint.

I stained over top of my paint as well.

I purchased my finale topper at a local specialty store.If you can't find something similar, get creative and add anything you can think of as a topper.

These are perfect elegant gifts. You could even attach some recipe cards too.

Flared Jeans into Skinny Jeans Tutorial

It's a happy day when you fit into jeans that you've been waiting for YEARS to fit again.

But it's a sad day when you realize they are grossly out of style . . . and maybe *ahem* they were even out of style the last time you wore them.

Start with your wretched flares . . .

Try them on inside-out.

Pin (on the outside) one leg to a comfortable fit,
be sure to leave at least an inch away from your
legs--it will be smaller when you sew it. (You can
go as loose or tight as you want--I don't like my
jeans skin tight on my calves. These are actually
more "boot cut" than skinny jeans.

Remove jeans and mark pins with a highlighter

Remove pins, and use a ruler to connect your pin
dashes--make the line as straight as you can
[Only YOU can prevent forest fires]

Sew over the line, be sure to backstitch several times at both ends.

And sew a second seam alongside the first . . .

Here's how it looks before cutting . . .

Cut away the flare, not too close to the seam

Fold your sewn and cut leg over the "un-sewn" one. I used my iron
on this step to make sure the legs were completely the same.

Cut the"un-sewn" pant leg. Then sew a double seam up the side.

Try those puppies on!

Halloween Costume Idea: witch shoes

I know, I know. This idea would have helped you out A WEEK AGO. Let's just say I'm helping you out a year in advance. I like to plan ahead.

My sweet mother-in-law sent my daughter Mollie the CUTEST Halloween clothes at the beginning of October, which prompted Mollie to decide she wanted to be a witch for Halloween. I was so excited! She already had a witch hat, so I just needed witch tights and some witch shoes. I paid $8 for some witchy high heels at the D.I., with plans to turn them into five-year-old witch shoes. I think they turned out pretty cool.

Original Banana Republic high heels: $8

I used a bread knife to saw through the shoe. Then I hot clued a pair of her
Sunday shoes (that have been getting snug, anyway) and glued those pointy
babies on over the shoe. VOILA!.

With the shoes, the hat, and the clothes, and a pair of stripey tights from Target, she was ready for a photo shoot. This is the first year I have thought to take pictures BEFORE Halloween Day, and I was proud of myself for thinking of it, because those pictures are always taken in a mad rush before trick-or-treating. {When I write "mad rush," I really do mean mad: my kids are angry with me for cutting into their candy-collecting time with photos.}

That shirt "Tutu Wicked" was totally designed
and made by MY fabulous mother-in-law.

If I have baby chicks, they are going to be
incorporated into every photo possible.

Beyond adorable, right? I certainly think so. And every I showed these pictures to thought so as well. So assumed Mollie would like to see how cute she looked. As soon as I showed her the above photos, she looked at me, her eyes filled up with tears, and she wailed, "Mo-ommmm, I just want to be Rapunzel!"

C'est la vie, people.

Finished Gallery Wall

Should I be ashamed that it took me 9 months to finally finish my gallery wall? I mean all I had to do was fill in the frames with pictures. You would think because I am a photographer that the simple task of putting up a picture or two would have been easy, but no...I literally filled in the last picture frame this morning. And as sad as that is, I have new pictures of each child to put up again. SIGH....

Corner Hutch Gone Fabulous

My husband and I have four kids, four rabbits, twenty-five chickens, and two cats.

We also own a 2-bedroom house that is 1400 square feet and was built in 1915.

You can go ahead and feel sorry for me . . . I don't.

Our oldest son makes his bedroom in the short-ceilinged basement with the food storage and seasonal items. Our other three share the "big" bedroom (about 28 feet by 12 feet) and my husband and I take the small bedroom (10 feet by 12 feet). We love love LOVE our small house. It's cute and cozy, and, best of all, there is a finite amount of space--we can only own so much stuff and we consider this a huge blessing. (Plus, not to brag, we have a big ol' honkin' yard).

However, because there is limited space . . . if I ever get something for my house, it has to be one of two things: beautiful, or useful. This corner hutch happens to be both.

I'll have to figure out what to put on the bottom two
shelves that my 13-month-old won't scatter everywhere

My totally awesome friend Meg GAVE this hutch to me . . . because generous is her middle name. She refurbishes and sells furniture, and she could give my sisters a run for their money with her interior designer skills. Check out Meg Torman Designing. She's beyond compare. She had used this hutch for her boys' room, then painted it turquoise to go with a bedroom set that she was gonna sell. I happened to be over at her house during the height of her cleaning-out-the-garage pique . . . and she told me to take it.

Did. I. Ever.

I knew the perfect place for it, and I knew the perfect use for it: 1- dining room, 2- craft supplies. BOOM.

Before . . .

My sweet safety-goggles-wearing husband went to town sanding
it for me (he wore the goggles using the belt sander)

Sanded and ready to paint! I sprayed white spray-
paint in all the hard-to-get cracks before using a
paintbrush and an indoor satin white paint

Coat number one . . .

Three coats later . . . I can't decide whether or
not to put that little door back on the bottom shelf

I sprayed a coat of polyurethane on it before
bringing it inside, so it won't get tacky. I also totally
anchored it to the wall, because that's how I roll.

Crayons in a wide-mouthed mixing bowl ($1.50 at the D.I.)
for Miss Mollie's easy access

Scissors and glue sticks in a cookie jar ($1)
Colored pencils in a retro quart pitcher (also $1)

Watercolor markers in a sweet triangular jar with
a cork lid ($2), baby colored pencils in a baby jam
jar (leftover from a yummy, homemade Christmas gift)

I love how it turned out: it takes up so little space, but still dresses up the dining room, adds a splash of color, and makes it so I never have to get craft supplies from the cupboard again. In short, the perfect piece of furniture.

Now I can enjoy masterpieces like this on a daily basis. (Notice the "M-O-M" just under Diego's backpack? Yeah, this was multi-colored just for me).

Patio Decor: Geography in Your Own Backyard

I have been waiting for this moment since I first gave birth eleven years ago . . . My son is in fifth grade. And he is learning STATES AND CAPITALS!!!!!

Finally. My area of expertise.

Of course I love maps (who doesn't?). One of the first purchases I made for our first apartment was a laminated world map and United States map. Later, I bought an actual roll-down map of North America off Ebay (I gave it to my sister Hanna when I had to build bookshelves in the only feasible place in my entire house that this map would fit . . . but that's a story for another time). And my favorite way to wrap presents is with map-paper from old road atlases (check out the post I did here about it). One of my favorite gifts my husband ever got for me (in 2005) was this geography coloring book, after he watched me print out maps from the Internet and spend hours coloring and labeling them.

But only having a fifth grader could prompt me to do what I have dreamed of doing since having my own home: painting a map of the United States on my very own concrete patio. Oh yeah! One week later, and I finally have the energy to blog about it.

I tried to "freehand" an outline of the US of A with chalk just by looking at the map in my atlas. Um, yeah, Texas was even bigger and freakier-shaped than usual, and Maine and Florida belonged where Newfoundland and Cuba belong, respectively.

Poor Calvin got to watch the entire two-hour process . . .

So I had to do it a real way. I carefully drew a grid of chalk on my back patio. It was thirteen, 1-foot spaces wide by six, 1-foot-4-inch spaces long. And I even made the longitudinal lines get bigger as they went South . . . the better to represent the curvature of the earth, yo.

It took me about twenty minutes to lay out the grid.

Then I began to work on the states with chalk. The same way as reading: left to right, top to bottom (Only I actually went top to bottom, then left to right. The West Coast must be chalked first). That took an hour and a half. Whew. (The next day, I felt like I had done a thousand squats . . . as I very well may have done).

I ended up using both atlases (one for kids and one for grownups)
because one had better longitude / latitude lines, and the
other had better outlines of the states themselves

When I finally had the whole thing done, I was so excited to start spray-painting. "WAIT!" You're thinking. "Spraypaint?" Unfortunately, my brain never told me that it might not be a good idea, because spraypaint is 1) fast, 2) cheap, and 3) lasts forever on concrete, as the many "project-spots" on my back patio can attest to.

Here goes.

I wanted to CRY after I sprayed the first couple states. I worked so hard chalking the California coastline! And now it just looked all . . . spray-painty. It was not as pretty and perfect as the chalk!

I stood for a while with the can in hand, like a vandal who can't decide which swear-word to graffito on the side of a box car in the dead of night when the only emotions she can conjure up are angst and rebellion . . . and I finally decided the same thing that said vandal would decide: go ahead and finish.

And I'm so glad I did! It actually turned out to look pretty good. Kind of stylized. At the very last minute, I remembered Alaska and Hawaii, so I spent another twenty minutes chalking those two and then painting them (I actually left out the skinny strip of Alaska that butts up against British Columbia. C'est la vie.)

Now, time to help Truman become around-the-world champion of his fifth grade class. {If they still play around-the-world. Did any of you play it? My fifth grade teacher, Mr. Wood, gave king-size candy bars to anyone who made it all the way around the classroom . . . ah, those were my days of glory.}

Chest Of Drawers Armoire Redo

Seriously I am having thrift store anxiety.

I haven't been for awhile now and I am itching to get my hands on a killer find like this one.

I found this one over a month ago.

It was LOVE at first sight.

{sorry I forgot to take pictures as I went along...so what I have will have to do!}

Isn't it fabulous?

My husband was mortified.

HE definitely could NOT see the potential of this piece.

We unscrewed all of the hinges, handles, and knobs and gave them a nice new personality with my favorite stuff.

It totally brought them to life too!

We then painted this piece with black paint.

And finished it off with clear coat spray.

Finally, now to enjoy.....

Well, someone else gets to enjoy it! I resold it within 2 days!

DIY Pillows

I got this great find at the DI for $4.

I knew it needed something though...

So while I was visiting my sis, we decided to make some super cute and unique pillows!

We grabbed some canvas that she already had at her house and we cut out our pillows.

To give our pillows some PizZaZz we used fabric pens and stencils from Wally World.

On one of my pillows I decided not to stencil on it but to add a fabric flower.

On the next two pillows I used the stencils and marker to give them a cute design and saying.

Put them all together and I would say that the basket looks much better and not so plain.

Now on to painting the basket....

T-shirt Throw Pillow

I made this pillow for my son Truman for 2 reasons: 1) to preserve his two favorite shirts in a way he would like, and 2) because I was sick of him wearing only these two shirts. You decide which reason influenced me more to break out the sewing machine.

Truman is almost 11, and this pillow is going to be one of his birthday presents. The thing is, I know the main reason he wore these two shirts all the time was more because they were always in the top of his shirt drawer than anything else. I don't think he has even noticed that the shirts are gone, because now he is wearing whatever 2-3 shirts are currently in the top of his drawer. I need to go in his room and rotate his clothes if I want to see him dress with any variety. But I digress . . .

Start with two shirts (clean & pre-shrunk)

Use a template to cut out equal-sized squares
(I used a 12-inch square of corkboard I had lying around)

Cut four rectangles the same length as the side of your squares,
you determine the width
{PS- the fabric I used came from a $2 red tablecloth
I bought at the D.I. specifically for this project---sweet.}

Sew right sides together on the tops and bottoms of your t-shirts

Cut four new lengths to match the long side of your sewn shirts

Sew right sides together along both sides of each piece, then sew
right sides together of both finished squares, leaving a hole for stuffing.

Stuff that pillow like a Thanksgiving turkey!
{I used stuffing from an old body pillow,
fluffing each piece before adding it to my new pillow}

Sew up the hole and present it to your intended recipient with love.

I like this project because it is super simple--much easier than making a t-shirt quilt, but still meaningful to your little basketball camper :). Right now, Truman is sporting his 2012 basketball camp shirt about 50% of the time, so maybe in 2013 he'll get another pillow after attending Cardinal b-ball camp again.

Armoire Redo

O.K. So do you remember this piece I showed you awhile back?

A SCORE at the D.I. (local thrift store) for only 35 buckaroos.

Although it was love at first sight, this thing needed some work.
It was missing a total of 5 drawers.
Four on the inside and one that you can see at the bottom.

So we started tearing out the old drawer holders....

Next up paint.
We ended up having to paint it 2 times.
The first time the white took on a cream look, so we had to start all over again to get it brilliant white.

We also took off all the hardware and gave them new life with...

Then I found a tension rod to go on the inside to hang clothing.

Next I added some fabric behind the grate of the door.

I love that you can see the grate now too!
I filled the armoire to the brim with all of my baby things...(she is already so spoiled)

Now it is ready to display and use.

Now to fill that frame on the wall with a new picture of my girls
and find an old chandelier to hang for lighting.
I am sooo in LOVE!

DYI pergo floor cleaner

I have blonde pergo floor all acrossed my front living space, front room, kitchen, and dining room.

It opens everything up and makes it nice and spacey looking, BUT it shows dirt like no ones business.

Anyone who knows me personally, knows that I have some major OCD when it comes to my floors.

I mop almost every single day....eeeekkkk...I know....it is a pain. But I HATE to see footprints, etc on my floor.

I am spending close to $40.00 a month on swiffer disposable wet mops. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE them. But let's face it there has to be a more thrifty way. So I scoured Pinterest, sure I would find something, and didn't. So then I Googled floor cleaner and found a recipe I decided to give it a try!

DYI Pergo laminate floor cleaner

to a measuring cup or jar, add the following:

1 part Water
1 part White Vinegar
1 part 2% Isopropyl Alcohol
Few drops of liquid dish detergent
opt. 5 drops essential oil for smell

Mix all ingredients together and pour into a fine mist spray bottle.

How to Use Homemade (DIY) ‘Pergo' Laminate Flooring Cleaner

Sweep or vacuum your floors first
Spray the cleaner in a fine mist, low over the surface area to be cleaned
Allow to set for a few minutes, then use a microfiber mop or towel to wipe it up.

Since I had the swiffer wet mop I decided that I would still use it with a towel. But then I got to thinking that a regular wash cloth isn't as absorbent as some of the towels out there. I remembered seeing some knock off Sham-Wows @ the dollar store. So I ran to pick up a few. You get 2 per pack @ $1.00 (they are called Shammie Whammies) The best part is they are reusable, so no more wasting!

I just attatched them like so....

I simply spritz the DYI cleaner across the floor and mopped....

One Shammie Whammie does the whole floor. I was using 3 wet mops per day before.

You'll notice right away that this mixture cleans effectively and with ease, dries quickly, and it is so simple to use. The best part is there is NO BUCKET REQUIRED and it is SO INEXPENSIVE!

(* side note, if you by the $ store Shammie Whammies....wash them and hang them to dry. Don't dry int he dryer or use fabric softner.)

Look at how well this cleans!!

Light Fixtures

So I have had this chintzy gold light fixtures FOREVER now. I have had every intention of taking them down and spraying them, but let's face it, I forget half of the time.

Finally my husband took them down for me.

Here are the befores....

The shade of gold is not my fav unless it is real gold worth some $$.

I don't hate the white ceiling fan, but it shows dust all the time.

And this one needs to go too!

So I got out my favorite spray for metal.....

Hammered Brown by Rust-oleum

....and sprayed away!

Now I am asking myself WHY on earth it took me so long. It looks SO SO much better!

Lamp Makeover

I have lots of lamps.

Whenever I find one at a thrift store for $3.00 or less I add it to my cart.

I've had this one laying around for awhile now and it definitely needed some tlc.

So I spray painted it white....

....and slightly sanded the edges to give it a shabby chic feel.

Then I found this lamp shade.....

....and gave it a good coat of blue spray paint also.

An easy peasy lamp makeover! Perfect for my craft room.

Craft Center

So I have this all wood book shelf.

I love it, but there are two problems.

First, since I made this TV Hutch into a book shelf, it is empty.

Second, my son used Rub n' Buff as finger paints and painted on it! Ugh!

I debated whether or not to get rid of it, but then decided since it was all wood I should keep it. So I painted it with some antiqued white. (Well, lets be honest....I painted a little, my husband painted a lot, and then my sister and sister-in-law finished it off.)

So after I finally decided what the heck I was going to do with it, I antiqued the edges.

Then I piled on my craft supplies!

Perfect for my organized crap...er....I mean craft chaos!
HA!

Now I can easily grab what I want without digging and making such a mess!

Seriously this is a super easy project to tackle, and the effects of letting our teachers know how much we LOVE and APPRECIATE them is even longer lasting.

I heard from a friend recently "I don't do teachers gifts because I can't afford it."

GASP.....cough....Gasp again...

I am one of those peeps who believe in showing appreciation for our teachers and all of their hard work.

It doesn't even have to cost money or you can spend hardly anything!

It is the thought the matters, right?!

So here is a quick and simple gift idea.

First get out some frames. If you don't have any then hit the thrift stores or dollar store.

These are 5x7 frames that I already had on hand.

Next, pull out your tole paints, spray paints, whatever you want to bring your frames to life!

I used a spray paint I already had on hand.

Then design, in your word perfect, word pad, or photo editing program, a favorite quote.

And if you don't want to come up with one on your own...I did all the work for you.

I found this fun quote and designed it with a chevron background!

(Just right click, save in your files, and print. This is a 5x7 sz., but you could re-size it smaller too.)

After your frames are done drying, give them a light sanding.

Print out your quote or the one above and simply frame it!

All for the cost of $0.00

Spring Fever

Does anyone else have major spring fever?

My long lists of projects to get done, ways to decorate, foods to try, and more, are majorly on my mind! The warmer weather makes me want to get all my spray painting projects done.

First up.....this.....

I love this piece.
Anyone who knows me can tell you what a sucker I am for pots, vases, and containers!
So of course, I can't throw it out.

So I took out this lovely shade of Krylon...(one of my favs)

I gave this vase a good coat and then sanded the edges slightly.

Next, I filled it full of some faux grass and rocks.

It fits perfectly in my bathroom.
I love the freshness of the green...don't you?

Now to do something about that wretched sink...hmmmm...

Little Changes

I am in FULL NESTING mode.

I want to get a million projects done, but move like a sloth. It seems like I am getting lots done but they are little things here and there.

It is amazing how simple little things can change a look or feel of a room!

I have been adding to my lamp shades like crazy!

I took this same "HOW TO" and made some flowers to add a little extra to some of my lamp shades.

So much better and easy to make a difference!

I decided these need some refreshing too!

A little sewing and some new fresh fabric sure makes a HUGE difference!

And look at this HUGE project I am going to tackle soon for my girls room!

Oh, I am so in love with this piece.

I picked this up for $35 @ a thrift store.

She needs some TLC but she is going to be fabulous.

So watch for that transformation!

Now onto my Bedroom.

It added a perfect color splash.

And I followed the color splash theme and added a little extra to my candlesticks too!

DIY Dress

I am coming up on my 7th month of pregnancy, and let's face it...I am having a hard time feeling comfortable in some of my church clothes.

I was so excited when I found this little tutorial for a DIY Elastic Waisted Dress!

All you need is a tank top, 2" elastic (I could only find 1 1/2" at Wally World), and fabric of your choice! This yellow happened to be on sale for $2 a yard at Walmart!

I had this tank top laying around in my craft supplies. I almost got rid of it the other day, but am so glad I finally found a use for it!

Start by putting the tank top on and measuring right underneath your bust. (Leave about an inch or so extra for sewing room or mistakes.)

Then cut your take top at your desired length.

Next, I pinned the elastic to the tank top and got out my amazing sewing machine. (I just recently got it for Christmas, and I have been having so much fun with it!)

Ta -dah! Now you are ready to attach the skirt portion.

Please don't mind my horrible pinning job...

I tried...hence the word "tried"... to make pleats in the skirt as I went.

Once your fabric is sewn to the elastic, lay it out and decide on the length that you would like your dress to be.

I sewed the side seam before I did the hemming of course...

Press the hem with your iron and hem the bottom!

And there you have it!! It is quite simple and fast! I now have a dress that I feel very comfortable in!

Excuse the blurry mirror pics. Eli wasn't home so I had to improvise.

Here's the baby bump!

Add some accessories and your outfit is complete!

Now go and get your sew on :)

Valentines Wreath

I know it's a day late, but you can use this wreath heart even if it's not V day. Very easy, but pretty time consuming to complete.

I can't take credit for this craft, as an awesome friend in my neighborhood actually made one first & got the supplies for a bunch of us that do craft day together. But I thought I would share with all of you, because it is such a cute idea.

buy an inexpensive foam wreath heart

Red felt. trace circles & cut them out (this part takes quite a while. and you need A LOT of circles to fill up your wreath!)

Fold your circle in half

Fold in half again and put a pin in it.

Heres a short video tutorial on how to fold your circle.

Pin it on your wreath & Repeat with each felt circle.

back of the wreath. You don't have to put the felt circles on the back, because no one will see it & it will sit flush with your door/wall if you keep it blank. Add a ribbon to hang your wreath.

Finished product.

I LOVE it!

Easy DIY table runner

I am LOVING burlap!!

Obsessed might be a better word!

I have tons of plans to use lots of this natural goodness all over my home.

I had this black table runner before.(Above pic)

I love it, but definitely want more neutrals and greens in my kitchen too.

So I decided that a burlap runner would be perfect!

What to do

First, cut your burlap to the length of your table and width you would like.

Next, simply fray the edges....no hem required!

Finally choose some sort of accent fabric.

I choose black lace, 'cause lets face it...lace is also an obsession!

Simply cut 4 strip of lace the width of your runner and sew them down.

I had my mom sew it for me.

If you don't sew I bet you could use sewing glue as well!

Simple, easy, and the perfect look for any home!

REDO FINALLY part 2 Of Bunk Bed Frame

2 years ago I told you all I would show you what I was going to make with my kids bunk bed frame, a year ago I made it...but I am FINALLY posting...at the demands of Bonnie! :O) ( (LINK HERE) to see the Bunk Bed frame I made out of the one I had) AND here is what I made from the Bunk Bed Ends

I have seen single benches but not DOUBLE. Now all 6 of my kids can be in time out at the same time... :O)

I have totally wanted to copy the word EAT I have seen on T.V sitcoms and so I whipped one out...

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I doodled the font I wanted, cut them out, mod pod, and sanded, clear spray painted to set...and VWA-LA! I LOVE them and one of my kids said "Mom we know our goal is to not complain about what you make, but did you really have to make an Eat Sign."

This is another simple painting project!

My husband HATES colored walls. He doesn't necessarily love white walls either. if he has his way, every wall in our house would be tan... BORING! So, I decided to compromise. I told him I wouldn't paint our family room (Jazz music themed) a bright color, IF he let me paint the furniture whatever color I wanted. He was hesitant but finally gave in!

Paint them yellow (I didn't sand them down before I painted. I SHOULD have, because it took me 4 coats to get this covered!)

scuff up the edges & add some scratches to the top with simple sandpaper!

Spray painted some end table decor/ room decor for my family room.

More spray painting - no more plain black candlesticks

add pieces to the end tables (the purple wicker basket underneath holds my babies wipes/diapers/creams for when we are downstairs and I don't want to run upstairs for a diaper change.)

And the coffee table, i DID sand this one down (luckily)

I Painted it black first, and then lime green, so when you scuff it the black shows through!

Sprayed it with a gloss finish so it wouldn't be sticky and so the paint wouldn't get scratched off. (Had to bring it inside to dry, outside is far too cold.)

Finished product.
My Husband was actually pleasantly surprised at how much he liked the bright furniture!

Applique Skull Onesie...
I LOVE LOVE LOVE wonder under....its SO simple to use and makes my brain create fun things for those extra special gifts.
I just whipped up this cute skull for K.K's little one.

Just simply make your own pattern and iron on!

And now onto MAKING a shirt that doesn't fit you anymore into your childs shirt.

First inside out the shirt you are shrinking...and lay one of your kids shirts on top of it....

Cut off the extra on the bottom (which you can hem if you want...I don't)

outline with a pen, marker, pencil (whatever) and sew up and out the arm twice...THEN cut off the excess. Most people would separate the arm and add it again...I am too lazy and this works for me
