Jamie Redknapp reveals why Arsenal have not yet sacked under-fire manager Mikel Arteta

2020-12-23T14:23:00.004+03:00

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is growing under increasing pressure to turn the club's fortunes around, but Jamie Redknapp believes he knows the reason behind the Gunners' refusal to show him the exit door

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie Redknapp believes Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been saved from the sack at the Emirates Stadium because they won the FA Cup last season.

The Spaniard, who was appointed Gunners boss a year ago this week, is growing under increasing pressure in north London following a dismal start to the Premier League campaign, which sees them currently just four points above the relegation places.

After 14 league games, Arsenal, who welcome London rivals Chelsea to the Emirates Stadium on Boxing Day, have won just four matches, as well as netting just 12 goals, highlighting that they are no longer recognised as an exciting, attacking outfit.

With the club's current form showing no signs of improving, the former Manchester City assistant manager is growing under increasing pressure from the supporters, with no shortage of them calling for a change.

However, the Gunners' board is showing no sign of relieving Arteta of his duties just yet. For Redknapp, it was last season's FA Cup triumph and the goodwill and trust in his abilities accrued from securing that trophy, that has spared him the axe.

“[He is under an] enormous amount [of pressure] because this is a results-driven business and the results haven’t been good enough," Redknapp told Sky Sports ahead of the Gunners' Carabao Cup clash with City this evening."What’s saved him a bit is the money he has in the bank because he won the FA Cup, they’ve been incredible in cup competitions but right now they’re a team that’s lacking form.

"When I think about Arsenal over the years, it’s a team that had so much style going forward, but this team is lacking so much confidence; there’s a lot of talk about dressing room unrest which doesn’t help when people are talking from outside.

"He needs to quieten everyone down with some results. I do fear for him, because this job is a difficult one if you have 1000 games, let alone being in the job for two minutes."

No shortage of names have been linked with succeeding Arteta in north London if the Gunners do decide to call time on his tenure, including former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri.

Arsenal in 'big trouble' says Mikel Arteta after miserable Carabao Cup exit

Arteta: ‘This was a really painful moment’

Arteta's Arsenal misery continues in 4-1 Carabao Cup loss to Manchester City

The Arsenal manager picked a second-string team and watched his goalkeeper, Alex Rúnarsson, endure a torrid evening. The low point came when the Icelander fumbled a Riyad Mahrez free-kick into the net to give City a 2-1 lead. Rúnarsson had also been partly to blame for Gabriel Jesus’s opening goal.

It was a night when so much went wrong for Arteta. Gabriel Martinelli, who made Arsenal’s equaliser for Alexandre Lacazette, was forced off after taking a kick to the shin while City’s third goal, scored by Phil Foden, ought to have been disallowed for offside only there was no recourse to VAR.

The bottom line was that it was no hard luck story for Arteta. City had too much quality, they were far the better side and they moved one step closer to a fourth consecutive win in the competition. Pep Guardiola, who joined them in 2016, has only lost one knockout tie in the competition.

Arteta’s team are mired in a desperate run of Premier League form, having taken only five points from the past 10 games, and they face a difficult home game with Chelsea on Boxing Day.

“We have to turn it around, there’s no question about that,” Arteta said. “We are in big trouble. I am focused on the fighters we have. I see a lot of fighters. This was a really painful moment again. We conceded a soft goal really early and to get through that is difficult but we reacted and scored. After that we were the better team but then we conceded another soft goal.

“When you give away the goals that we gave against an opponent like this, it makes the game impossible. Then, we have an open situation when we can play Lacazette through and they score on the counter and from an offside position. After that, the game is over.”

Arteta said that he felt his No 1 goalkeeper, Bernd Leno, needed some rest. On Rúnarsson, he added: “He hasn’t played a lot of games and he is just adapting to the league. We all make mistakes and we have to support him. We win and lose together. The responsibility is for us all.”

City have struggled for cutting edge at times this season and Guardiola was pleased with the ruthlessness they showed. But he added: “It’s like in Manchester, raining every day. For one day, the sun rises. It doesn’t mean the weather is going to change. It’s just one game. So we’ll see what happens in the future.”

Guardiola gave his support to Arteta, his former assistant at City, who is under increasing pressure. “They will do a huge, big mistake [if they dismiss him],” he said. “I’m pretty sure they are going to trust him. I know his incredible quality. It’s just a question of time and he will do well.”

Arsenal Vs Aston Villa match details

2020-11-09T11:19:00.001+03:00

Arsenal were ruthlessly beaten on home soil 3-0 by Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday evening. Villa had the ball in the net within a couple of minutes, only for John McGinn’s strike to be ruled out for offside, but before the half-hour mark a fine passing move ended in Bukayo Saka sliding into his own net under pressure from Trezeguet. Alexandre Lacazette headed over with Arsenal’s best chance of the half, but the home side struggled to make many openings at all while Villa remained a threat on the counter. After the break it was the away team who grew in stature and creativity, with Ollie Watkins eventually notching the second after a fantastic move and first-time cross from Ross Barkley and then drilling in a third minutes later. Here are five things we learned from the game at the Emirates Stadium. (Getty)

Grealish-Barkley link-up play The best passing combinations, clever build-up and movement leading to chances didn’t come from the home side. It was the exchanges of both possession and positions which was on show from Villa’s attacking duo Barkley and Jack Grealish. There was enough understanding between them to fire in passes, receive first-time returns and keep looking for each other over longer distances, too. Space was exploited constantly whether with direct passes or dribbles, and Arsenal had no response to the combination of power and technical excellence. Inconsistency not just about Pepe Mikel Arteta spoke in the week about the need for Nicolas Pepe to find consistency, not just game-to-game but even in spells within single games, if he wants to seal a regular first-team spot. Perhaps his post-match talk here should echo those sentiments toward a few other players. Willian lacked any impact on the match at all, Lacazette missed the game’s best chance for his team and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was on the fringes of the game at best. Off the bench, Dani Ceballos had a minimal effect on the build-up play, and he has already lost his spot in the side. The Gunners have shown improvements, but there’s a strange predictability about their attack at times, which lacks variation, speed and a clinical edge at present.

McGinn had a goal ruled out for offside

McGinn had a goal ruled out for offside (Getty) Douglas Luiz, the monster in the middle It wasn’t only about a difference in clinical edge at either end of the pitch. In the centre of the park, Douglas Luiz was utterly dominant, majestic throughout and especially once Arsenal lost Thomas Partey at half-time to injury. Winning back possession, covering runs from deep, having quality on the ball and spreading an outrageous ball left in the build-up to the second goal all showed his tactical and technical traits. Villa have a much-improved side this season; Luiz was excellent for most of last term too, but with better players around him he’s shining even more when his team plays well. Happy homecoming for Martinez One of the sideshow stories of the game was Emi Martinez returning to the Emirates Stadium, where Mikel Arteta chose Bernd Leno over him in the summer as No. 1. Simple terms: The Argentinian will be delighted, with a clean sheet and a win. But the wider picture of the game also shows his performance as superior, more assured, and of course with a far better-functioning defence in front of him. £20 million or so well-spent by ASton Villa - like most of their work in 2020. Rethink required The international break provides an unwelcome interruption to domestic action for most, but it does bring a natural cut-off point to assess each batch of games and plan the next phase for each team. Arteta would have hoped to head into this one with his side in sixth place, but this dreadful home defeat leaves them in mid-table, with as many wins as defeats in the Premier League. Perhaps in rebuild mode that would be acceptable to fans for a time, but only if it’s the established order ahead of them. But Palace? Everton, who have a manager in place for roughly the same time themselves? Southampton, who went briefly top? Arsenal fans will feel they should be ahead of them all; it’s still relatively early in the season yes, but it’s also just about a quarter of the way through. Games and weeks go fast, with Arsenal needing to find much more consistency and quality after the matches start up again. ARSENAL VS EVERTON ASIA TROPHY FINAL WHISTLE

2015-07-18T17:33:00.000+03:00

EVERTON'S hopes of adding silverware to their pre-season campaign were ruined by Arsenal tonight.

Goals in either half gave the Gunners a 3-1 win at the National Stadium in Singapore to inflict a first defeat of the summer on Roberto Martinez's men.

Theo Walcott put Arsenal ahead mid-way through the first-half before Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil added goals after the break to thrill the huge number of Arsenal fans in the ground.

Ross Barkley fired home a consolation goal with 15 minutes remaining.

Everton had enjoyed plenty of possession in the first-half but could not find any cutting edge and Walcott made them pay when he raced onto a ball over the top and capitalised on hesitant goalkeeping from Joel Robles.

The Blues thought they had forced an equaliser just before half-time but Gareth Barry's goal was ruled out after the referee's assistant spotted an infringement following Steven Naismith's header that was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Petr Cech.

Luke Garbutt forced Arsenal's new stopper into an even better save just after the re-start but quick-fire goals from Cazorla and Ozil soon ended hopes of a fightback.

Romelu Lukaku and Barkley were brought on just after the hour mark, with Roberto Martinez making six changes during the second 45.

And Barkley would smash home a consolation strike 15 minutes from time after excellent pressing from the Blues saw them win the ball back in Arsenal territory.

John Stones, the subject of a £20m bid from Chelsea yesterday, played 84 minutes of tonight's game before being replaced by Tyias Browning.

Everton (4-2-3-1): Robles, Coleman, Stones (Browning 84), Jagielka (c) (Hibbert 84), Garbutt, Barry, McCarthy (Osman 61), Deulofeu (Mirallas 46), Naismith (Barkley 46), Cleverley, Kone (Lukaku 61). Subs: Pienaar, Howard, Galloway, McAleny, Kenny, Williams, Robinson.

ARSENAL VS CHELSEA HIGHLIGHTS

2015-04-26T19:12:00.002+03:00

By Lawrence
SUMMARY
Arsenal and Chelsea are locked at 0-0 after a frenetic first half at Emirates Stadium saw four penalty appeals turned down.
Oscar went closest to breaking the deadlock, beating David Ospina to Cesc Fabregas' pass only for Hector Bellerin to head clear from inside his six-yard box.

Alexis and Mesut Ozil have gone close for Arsenal.
SETTING THE SCENE
That this game was even mooted as a staging post in the title race says everything about Arsenal's form since the turn of the year and, specifically, their run of eight straight league wins.
No team can match the Gunners for points in 2015 but their slow start to the campaign - and Chelsea's recent doggedness despite a drop in form - meant there were still 10 between the sides when they walked out at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
At the front of the Arsenal line was Per Mertesacker, rated 50:50 as recently as Thursday but passed fit after the medical team went to work on his ankle.
There were still four changes. Wenger opted for his most adventurous right back - Bellerin - and his most reserved left back - Nacho Monreal - while David Ospina and Olivier Giroud came in for Wojciech Szczesny and Danny Welbeck.
The title race may be a foregone conclusion but this was a chance for Wenger to register his first victory over Jose Mourinho and for Arsenal to lay down one of those mythical 'markers' ahead of next season.
The home fans are never short of pantomime villains when Chelsea come to town and on this occasion few were looking beyond former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, back in north London in a blue shirt after 303 appearances in red.
But club rivalries were put to one side before kick-off as the Emirates crowd stood to remember the 56 fans who perished in the Bradford fire, 30 years ago.

FIRST HALF
Some games take a while to get going. Not this one.
Arsenal started as if they owed Chelsea one. Chelsea started with the authority of champions-elect. The tempo was high, passes were crisp, tackles were over-zealous. Players and fans alike were pumped up.
Chelsea, with a fluid front three of Oscar, Eden Hazard and Willian keeping the Arsenal defence guessing, popped the ball about with Fabregas to the fore. Alexis was in the thick of it for the home side, whipping in a free-kick that was just too close to Thibault Courtois and seeing a shot deflected wide.
Branislav Ivanovic paid special attention to Alexis, introducing himself with three beefy - and illegal - tackles. Oscar went down under a far lighter challenge from Bellerin but was then clattered by Ospina after beating the goalkeeper to Fabregas' ball over the top. Bellerin raced back to save a certain goal with a clearing header while Oscar screamed for a penalty.
That wasn't given and Fabregas was also refused one halfway through the half, taking a tumble as his right leg fished for a touch from Santi Cazorla that never came. Fabregas went in the book to the derision of the home fans.
Arsenal struggled for openings, crossing to Giroud more in hope than expectation at times. But 11 minutes before the break they sprang into life, Alexis picking out Bellerin's excellent run into the box. The Spaniard was at full stretch to cut the ball back and Cazorla's shot struck Gary Cahill's raised arm. Again, no penalty was given.
That was encouraging but Arsenal were reminded of Chelsea's counter-attacking threat moments later when Willian's progress was unchecked, he released Ramires with a clever pass and the Brazilian's flick was kept out by Ospina.
Alexis shot wide and Ozil tested Courtois before a breathless first half was brought to a close. Goalless, but very entertaining.

Arsenal in talks over defender Gabriel Paulista - ARSENAL SIGNING

2015-01-23T09:18:00.001+03:00

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says the club are in talks with Villarreal in a bid to sign defender Gabriel Paulista.

"The talks are progressing quite well," he said. "Can we find an agreement or not I don't know. We are slowly progressing and there is a chance."
The Gunners are likely to have to secure a work permit for the uncapped 24-year-old Brazilian.

Krystian Bielik

Arsenal signed 17-year-old defender Krystian Bielik from Legia Warsaw for a reported £2.4m this week.
Wenger said Bielik, who can play in central defence, would be used as a defensive midfielder "without any question".
Regarding Bielik's fitness, he said: "He's not fit because they had the long winter break in Poland so he's at the start of getting back to full fitness and will not be ready for three weeks."
Wenger said there was a "50-50" chance that Paulista, the £15m-rated defender who joined Villarreal from Brazilian side Vitoria in 2013, would join him and added: "We are ready to pay the price we think right for a good player."
But because Paulista is not a European Union citizen and has yet to establish himself as a senior Brazil international, he would not meet the automatic work permit criteria.
Arsenal would have to convince a Football Association hearing that the defender was an "exceptional talent" and so should be granted permission to work in the United Kingdom.
That recommendation would then be passed on to the government department for a final ruling.
Wenger said that Hector Bellerin should be available for Saturday's FA Cup tie at Brighton following ankle trouble, but midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (groin) is a doubt.
The Arsenal manager also said that England striker Danny Welbeck "will need two more games to be back again" and is not in full training yet.

Welbec done deal to Arsenal

The England international is set to
complete his move to the Emirates,
having been told he could leave the club by new manager Louis van Gaal
By Wayne Veysey
Arsenal have agreed a €20 million
fee for Danny Welbeck, arsenal wiki
understands.
The Gunners have settled on a deal
with Manchester United in the last
few minutes and the England
international has been given
permission to discuss personal terms
and undergo a medical with the
club.
The striker is set to be offered a
four-year contract with the option of
a fifth year worth €120,000-a-week.
Arsene Wenger sanctioned a
sensational late bid for Welbeck
after failing to capture Radamel
Falcao and Loic Remy over the last
48 hours.
The Gunners are now set to be
successful in snatching Welbeck from under the noses of Tottenham, who
were in advanced discussions to sign him on loan.
Wiki understands that conversations
with United on deadline day had
centred on Arsenal trying to convince
the 20-times Premier League
champions to release Welbeck on a
permanent deal rather than on loan.
It is believed that Arsenal had
initially offered €16.5m for the
forward and United had demanded
€23m but the two clubs have now
settled on a €20m move, though
United are refusing to sanction his
exit until they have completed the
loan signing of Radamel Falcao from
Monaco.
Welbeck, who trained with England
at Arsenal's London Colney
headquarters on Monday, had been
on standby this evening to undergo
a medical at the centre and has now
been given permission to do so.

EVERTON VS ARSENAL 2-2 DRAW REVIEW

2014-08-23T21:39:00.000+03:00

With the midweek game against Besiktas in mind and some of the Arsenal squad still to get up to speed, Arsene Wenger opted for a bit of an experimental selection for the away game with Everton. And with last season’s naive performance at Goodison still fresh in the memory, the Gunners were determined to be more solid and hard to beat.

It was working fairly well until Everton stunned us with the opening goal against the ruin of play. A bit of a defensive switch off and a great ball in from Gareth Berry left Coleman the freedom of the penalty area to head past Szczesny.

Then the old adage that goals change games came into play, with us looking more nervous and Everton with their tails up. We still played some good stuff and could have scored with a bit more luck and a bit more sharpness around the box from Ramsey and the Ox. Then our bad luck really hit home, with the Toffees getting away with a Lukaku foul and a Naismith offside to hit us with a real body shot on the stroke of halftime.

Wenger brought Giroud on for Alexis for the second half, hopefuly to save the Chilean for Wednesday rather than a knock. And the Frenchman nearly got us back into it straight away, but his well struck volley flew over. We were not quite firing in attack, but Everton were very good defensively, throughout their team. When we did get it right, they were always there to snuff out the danger.

Arsenal finally broke through with Cazorla feeding Ramsey from the left but there was not long left and Everton were doing their best to kill the game, but the big man showed his strength and Monreal found him with a pinpoint cross to get us a point.

This was miles from the drubbing we got there last season, but we nearly got nothing from the game and will need to bounce back well to make the Champions League group stage. And I think Giroud will be starting that game!

ARSENAL VS MANCITY 3-0 WIN

2014-08-11T19:17:00.001+03:00

Arsenal added another piece of silverware to the Emirates Stadium trophy cabinet following their 3-0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday.

That’s two trophies for Arsene Wenger’s side in three months, with three of the team’s four new signings this summer on show at Wembley.

Arsenal have been ambitious in the market this summer, keen on build on their FA Cup win last season and cement their place as one of Europe’s biggest and most able clubs. The Community Shield will only add to the confidence felt at the club.

Here’s a look at six things we learned from Arsenal’s win over Manchester City.

New signings prove inspirational in win

Alexis Sanchez

There can be no substitute for the impact and boost in morale generated from new signings, especially new signings that can be deemed world class and who can play a big part in attaining silverware.
Alexis Sanchez wasn’t fully fit, with Arsene Wenger confirming so both in his half-time substitution of the Chilean and his post-match comments. But Alexis was lively on the right side of Arsenal’s attack, the flank where much of the team’s good play came from.
The Chilean very much showcased how influential he can be in Arsenal’s attacking play, linking up well with Yaya Sanogo as a creator, and getting on the end of scoring opportunities.
And to analyse the right-back position, there has been no great lose of quality in what Mathieu Debuchy brings going forward. In fact, he looks far better in the final third than Bacary Sagna, even if the latter is more assured in his own half.
But Debuchy is a full international with Premier League experience. There will be no shock to the system for the Frenchman.
Arsenal have a good base of players, as we saw last season. But the team had been missing key elements to turn a good side into a strong title contender. Those added elements were on display in the 3-0 win on Sunday afternoon.

ALEXIS TO POWER ARSENAL

2014-07-22T21:00:00.000+03:00

Alexis will add power, creativity and much quality to our squad and we are all looking forward to him joining up with us in a few weeks,” he said.
It’s not often you would hear both ‘power’ and ‘creativity’ to describe a footballer – often powerful players and creative players are very different beasts. But Alexis is a true all-round attacking threat.
Alexis' final World Cup game was a perfect example of his versatility. In Chile’s unfortunate second-round defeat on penalties to Brazil, he started as a right-sided forward, attempting to sprint in behind the opposition defence. From that position, Alexis scored Chile’s equaliser.
But after an hour, coach Jorge Sampaoli removed Eduardo Vargas, a similar player to Alexis, and put on Mauricio Pinilla, an old-fashioned central striker. Alexis' role changed, and he switched from an outside-right position to an inside-left role, collecting the ball deep, linking midfield and attack, looking to play through-balls. Indeed, his neat one-two with Pinilla led to the striker thumping against the bar in the dying moments of extra-time.
Alexis showed he can play either role - he can be the Thierry Henry, or the Dennis Bergkamp. Power and creativity.

Alexis' adaptability owes much to the fact he’s played different roles in different types of sides at a young age. He impressed at World Cup 2010 as tricky winger in a very direct Chile side which pressed high up the pitch, but the following season he was voted Serie A’s best player in an entirely different role. His Udinese team played on the counter-attack, and Sanchez was a No 10 playing behind Antonio Di Natale, powering through the centre of the pitch.
Then came his transfer to Barcelona. Now, Alexis was again a different player, forced to adapt to a side based around Lionel Messi, told to start wide and make runs in behind the opposition defence - and sometimes used as a No 9. Alexis was often a great attacking threat, but it always felt as if his game was restricted.
At Arsenal, Alexis' versatility means he can be used in very different ways. He could play on the right flank, particularly as Theo Walcott waits to return from a serious knee injury, but he’s also an alternative, or an accompaniment, as a centre forward to Olivier Giroud.

Alexis New Jersy

They are polar opposites - Giroud is tall, strong, good in the air and static with his positioning, moving towards the ball to link play. Alexis is short, quick, a mazy dribbler and extremely direct. They could form a fine partnership should Arsène Wenger use 4-4-2 as an alternative to the usual 4-2-3-1, as happened twice at Wembley in last season’s successful FA Cup run.
According to Alexis himself, it’s his style of play at Chile that will be most applicable to his new club. “Arsenal plays very well, which fits my style. That is why I moved here,” he said. “Arsène Wenger's style of play is the sort of style the Chilean national team has, so therefore I am used to it.”
Wenger has been a master of changing a player’s role upon their arrival at Arsenal - think how Henry was converted into a centre forward, or how Kolo Toure was brought back to become a top-class centre back - and he’ll be delighted by Alexis' all-round skill set, because there’s so much to work with.
Alexis has played differently for Chile, Udinese and Barcelona - who knows how he’ll play for Arsenal?

ARSENAL MADE END OF SEASON SIGNING (ALEXIS SANCHEZ)

2014-07-12T17:11:00.003+03:00

Sanchez, 25, joins Arsenal from Barcelona where he made a total of 88 appearances, scoring 39 goals during his three seasons with the Catalan side.

With Barcelona, Sanchez won both La Liga (2012/13) and the Copa del Rey (2012), as well as the Spanish Super Cup on two occasions (2011, 2013), the UEFA Super Cup (2011) and the FIFA Club World Cup (2011).

Regarded as one of the world’s finest talents, Sanchez has just returned from the World Cup in Brazil, where he played an integral role in Chile qualifying from their group (which included the Netherlands, Spain and Australia) and reaching the round of 16. During the tournament, Sanchez scored two goals from his four appearances.

The striker, who has now made 71 appearances for Chile, scoring 24 goals, started his career with Cobreloa, based in Calama in north Chile, where he spent a season before moving to Santiago-based Colo-Colo, where he won the Chilean Primera Division in 2007.

After convincing performances in Chile between 2005 and 2007, Sanchez went on loan to Argentine side River Plate, where he added the Argentinian Primera Division to his honours.

Following his success in South America, Sanchez made a permanent move to Serie A side Udinese in 2008, where he spent three seasons, scoring 20 goals from 95 appearances, before making the move to Barcelona in 2011.

Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger said: “As many people have seen during the World Cup this summer, Alexis is a fantastic footballer and we are delighted that he is joining us at Arsenal Football Club.

“Alexis will add power, creativity and much quality to our squad and we are all looking forward to him joining up with us in a few weeks. He has consistently produced top-quality performances at the highest level for a number of seasons now and we are all excited to see him integrate into the Arsenal squad. I’m sure all Arsenal supporters will join me in welcoming Alexis to our club.”

Sanchez said: “I’m so happy to be joining Arsenal, a club which has a great manager, a fantastic squad of players, huge support around the world and a great stadium in London. I’m looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and to be playing for Arsenal in the Premier League and Champions League. I will give my best to Arsenal and want to make all the supporters happy.”

Sanchez travelled to London Colney on Thursday to complete his medical and will join up with his new team-mates at the end of July, after spending some time on holiday following the World Cup.

It is expected that Sanchez will make his first Arsenal appearance at the Emirates Cup, which takes place at Emirates Stadium on Saturday, August 2 and Sunday, August 3.

Sanchez’s Arsenal squad number will be revealed soon through Arsenal’s official Instagram account.

A full interview with Alexis will feature soon on arsenalwiki blog.

Everyone at Arsenal welcomes Alexis to the club and looks forward to seeing him in an Arsenal shirt.

Arsenal have bid accepted for first big summer signing (Serge)

2014-05-24T13:40:00.002+03:00

Arsenal have had their bid accepted by Toulouse for right-back Serge Aurier.

The Gunners are on the look-out for a new right back as there are serious concerns Bacary Sagna will leave the club when his contract runs out in the summer.

And the SportsDirectNews website claim boss Arsene Wenger put a package together that the French side have accepted.

Walcott surprises FA Cup final mascot

2014-05-08T18:01:00.002+03:00

Nine-year-old Junior Gunner Lucas enjoyed the surprise of a lifetime ahead of Arsenal's game with West Brom on Sunday, when Theo Walcott paid him a visit with some special news.

Walcott sought out the Finsbury Park youngster in his seat at Emirates Stadium before kick-off, to tell him he had been randomly selected from over 30,000 Junior Gunners to be Arsenal's mascot for the FA Cup Final.

The Arsenal and England star explained to Lucas that he would get to visit the Gunners' changing room before the game, and lead them onto the pitch for kick-off.

He then invited Lucas pitchside to present him with an Arsenal strip and FA Cup Final tickets in front of the Emirates Stadium crowd.

Walcott said afterwards: "It was brilliant to be the one to tell Lucas he'd be our mascot for the FA Cup Final. He is Arsenal-mad and a lovely lad, so I am very happy for him. I hope he remembers the day for a long time to come."

Wojciech Szczesny congratulated by Tottenham neighbours on Arsenal's season (FA cup

2014-05-07T16:03:00.001+03:00

Wojciech Szczesny received a pleasant surprise from his Tottenham-supporting neighbours on Tuesday.

The Arsenal goalkeeper took to Facebook to show a congratulatory card on the Gunners' season as north London hostilities were set aside.

Well done: Wojciech Szczesny (right) received a congratulatory card from Tottenham-supporting neighbours

Despite the message being written in a Tottenham-emblazoned card, Szczesny was grateful for the gift nonetheless as he posted: 'Wow! This is class from my neighbours!!’

It appears the Poland international has clearly made an impression on some Spurs fans, despite the two clubs rivalry, who wrote:

'Well done on Champions League qualification and finishing above us (again!!!). We hope to have a happier season in 2015.'

Injured Chamberlain Facing FA cup final Fitness

2014-04-29T16:00:00.000+03:00

Arsene Wenger has revealed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is facing a race against time if he’s to be involved in the FA Cup final.

The England midfielder wasn’t part of the matchday squad for the win over Newcastle United last night with the boss revealing the 20-year-old has strained his groin and will be rested for a full two weeks.

Ox-laide Chamberlain

“He [Oxlade-Chamberlain] has an inflammation of his groin,” told press last night.

“He couldn’t practise. I put him on Friday on the team sheet and played him when he was needed, but it came to a point where it didn’t progress. We decided to give him a complete rest for two weeks. Will he be involved with me? I think he has a chance. But will he be ready for England? I think so.”

Injured on the first day of the season against Aston Villa, Chamberlain has endured a frustrating season making only 12 starts in all competitions and only 20 appearances in total.

Having announced himself on the international stage with a stunning volley against Brazil last summer he was tipped for big things this year only for knee ligament damage to keep him out until January. He looked sharp against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena in March but having been pressed into action against Wigan Athletic (when obviously not fully fit) his body again seems to be suffering. Fingers crossed he’s back soon and fit enough to be selected for England.

He’s not the only one of Roy Hodgson’s young charges racing the clock. Jack Wilshere is facing the same battle to get up to speed, although the boss did confirm last night that the 22-year-old is back in training.

“Jack is training already. It can’t tell you when he will be ready. I hope he will be back this season but I can’t tell you that tonight.”

You suspect if we beat West Brom on Sunday he may well get himself 30 minutes against Norwich on the last day of the season

Arsenal 3 – 0 Newcastle Player Ratings

2014-04-29T13:05:00.000+03:00

By Laumyx

Szczesny – 7.5He didn’t have much to do at all other than saving a one on one when we were 2 -0 up. It was an important save. If Gouffran scores there, it would’ve been a nervy final 20 minutes.

Sagna – 8
Another top performance by one of our best ever right backs. He was strong defensively and was effective in attack with his passing and crossing.

Mertesacker – 7
His passing was very good but defensively was questionable and allowed Sissoko to bypass him completely.

Koscielny – 8
He was superb today defensively and scored the opening goal.

Monreal – 7
Defensively dodgy but was offensively making great runs.

Arteta – 8
His performance will go under the radar but he constantly won the ball back off the Newcastle midfielders and he made some impressive forward passes today (one leading to Özil’s goal).

Ramsey – 8.5
He was poor for the first 30 minutes but proceeded to be sublime for the rest of the game. His passing, movement and intelligence can only be matched by Özil. He really has to be considered as one of the best central midfielders in Europe.

Cazorla – 8
Like Ramsey, he started poorly but grew into the game and combined well with the Welshman and our star German Özil.

Özil – 9 (MOTM)
He was phenomenal today. He makes it all look so easy. He has pace, dynamism, intelligence and ultimately end product. He’s going to tear the league up next season providing we can keep Walcott fit.

Podolski – 6.5
Didn’t do much all game. Missed a couple of headers from good corners.

Giroud – 7
Odd game from him. Movement was very good and he even managed to score but generally his touch, passing and shooting was woeful.

Subs:
Flamini – 6
Just came on and ran about a bit!

Rosicky – 6
Same as Flamini

Sanogo – 5
Didn’t have much to do as the game was already won. We passed it about slowly and he rarely got a touch of the ball.

Arsenal v Newcastle United: Arsene Wenger predic ts Alan Pardew will be calmer after touchline ban

2014-04-28T18:14:00.000+03:00

If he had been available all of the way through, then I think their season would have been a different story. They look like a completely different team with him in it.
Yes, you want people like Theo Walcott in the team for their pace but it's Ramsey who is so important for them. He is the player who runs forward and gets beyond the other team to open the game up.
When you have him making runs, it gives other players, such as Santi Cazorla, more time on the ball. The other players in the midfield don't do the same thing. He's also a finisher and gets big goals as well.
When he got injured around Christmas time, he was probably the best player in the league, scoring big goals in big games - and he has done the same since he has come back. If he hadn't got injured, then it would have been massive for Arsenal.

I think most teams that play Newcastle between now and the end of the season will expect three points with the way they are playing.
I don't think Liverpool need to worry about beating them on the final day unless a major improvement occurs over the next two weeks.
They are completely and utterly gone at the highest level. We saw Sunderland go to Chelsea and end Jose Mourinho's 77-game unbeaten home run and nobody saw it coming, but that was a team fighting for their lives.
That can't be said about Newcastle, who are in the middle of the table and simply can't win a football match for toffee.

Struggled

They sold Yohan Cabaye in January and shortly after that they got safe in the middle of the table and they haven't been able to pick themselves up again.
I watched them a few weeks ago against Hull, in the game when Alan Pardew headbutted David Meyler, and they were outstanding. They ripped apart a Hull team that was on a bit of a run, but they've struggled for wins since then.
They can't win their home games, so what chance have they got at the Emirates? I think Arsenal will win this and cement their position in the top four.
If they can do that and win the FA Cup, then I think that would be a brilliant season - and I think they will do both.
Arsenal ripped Hull apart last week - and Hull won't have Nikica Jelavic or Shane Long in the Cup Final. Psychologically the Hull players will be worried about that.
March was a nightmare for Arsenal. They had hard games and got punished in all of them. We all said they would be a force if they were still in it in April - and while they are no longer in the title race they are winning these games as expected.
This is a fairly easy prediction for me - it has to be an easy home win.

Premier League: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger warns Newcastle will not be pushovers

2014-04-27T17:45:00.002+03:00

Newcastle come into the game on a run of five consecutive defeats, but welcome manager Alan Pardew back to the dugout following a lengthy touchline ban.
But Wenger, whose side need two wins from their remaining three Premier League matches to secure Champions League qualification next season, has urged against any sense of complacency against Pardew's men.

"You know that Newcastle have quality, so of course we have to prepare like we will face a Premier League battle," the Arsenal manager said.
"The exciting thing in the Premier League is that everybody fights for every game and we have to prepare for that.
"We have come back (with) a better display in our offensive quality which brings confidence, so that is what we want to build on now."
"I like Mikel Arteta because of his quality, his focus, his commitment and his 'winner' attitude. I have big respect for what he has achieved this season," the Arsenal boss said.
"He is at that difficult age, but he is very conscientious, very professional and he has a couple of years left, yes."
Arsenal look set to strengthen their squad over the summer with Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender one reported target.
His acquisition could cast doubt over Mikel Arteta's future at the club, but Wenger indicated the 32-year-old, who is out of contract in 2015, still has a major role to play for Arsenal.
"I like Mikel Arteta because of his quality, his focus, his commitment and his 'winner' attitude. I have big respect for what he has achieved this season," the Arsenal boss said.
"He is at that difficult age, but he is very conscientious, very professional and he has a couple of years left, yes."
Arsenal look set to welcome back captain Thomas Vermaelen who is set to be available again after sitting out the 3-0 win at Hull City with a hamstring problem.

Arsenal v Newcastle preview

2014-04-25T17:07:00.003+03:00

Arsenal expect to have captain Thomas Vermaelen back from a hamstring problem for Monday night's Barclays Premier League clash against Newcastle.

Midfielder Abou Diaby will not be rushed into a return from a serious knee injury after reporting a slight groin problem after playing for the Under-21s in midweek.
Defender Kieran Gibbs (hamstring) is still sidelined along with England midfielder Jack Wilshere (foot), Serge Gnabry and Theo Walcott (both knee).
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will hope for a further fitness boost ahead of the game.
Midfielder Moussa Sissoko is back in training after missing the last three games with a hamstring problem and could feature at the Emirates Stadium, while full-back Mathieu Debuchy and striker Loic Remy could return to the starting line-up after appearing as substitutes in last weekend's 2-1 home defeat by Swansea.
However, strikers Papiss Cisse (knee) and Luuk de Jong (ankle) are likely to be missing as medics continue to assess the extent of the injuries they suffered against the Swans, and midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa (dead leg) is still struggling.

Giroud set to sign new Arsenal contracts?

2014-04-24T16:44:00.003+03:00

If you had suggested around about a week ago that Arsenal were on the verge of tying down the manager Arsene Wenger and his favourite centre forward Olivier Giroud with shiny new contracts, you would have been chased through north London by an angry mob of red and white Gooners.

However, things are looking a lot rosier at the club just now. If the Gunners win the next four games, with the French striker putting in the sort of performance that he did against West Ham United and Hull City, those new contracts could soon be signed, sealed and delivered.

Giroud has confirmed, as reported by ESPN among others, that he has no intention of quitting Arsenal this summer. We had been led to believe that his wife Jennifer had given the 28-year old an ultimatum about leaving London after those hotel indiscretions, but either that was untrue, has changed, or Giroud has refused.

Wenger seems to have forgiven him for his antics as well and I very much doubt that he is going to sell him now, after two years in the Premier League getting up to speed. There may even have been talk of a new contract for him already, as Giroud dropped hints about it in his interview with the French media.

The striker said, “Could I extend my contract? Why not?.

“You shouldn’t listen to that[rumours of his exit]. A lot of things were said. I’m still happy in London and with Arsenal and think I will be in the future.

“I have a contract until 2016 and I’m an Arsenal player. I want to be here next season, at least that’s my will.

“Of course we all want him [Wenger] to continue the adventure. I’m sure next season we can challenge for the title – I hope, right until the end of the season – and we need the coach. We need his experience. He has to stay.

“Things are better, we’ve got a bit of serenity back with regards to fourth. I would say the main objective is to finish fourth – we know that the Champions League is a vital objective for the club. We’ve played in it for the last 16 years and I don’t want to be part of the team that misses out. But the FA Cup final is also very, very important for the club.”

It is probably fair to say that the Arsenal futures of Wenger and Giroud are linked, so the striker had better make sure we do win that cup and secure fourth, meaning the Prof will stay. Then he may get the contract extension he is after. But would this be good for the club or not
