How Nepal won through D/L method?

On 16 March 2023, Nepal and the United Arab Emirates were playing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2 at Tribhuvan University's Cricket ground. UAE scored 310 runs in the designated 50 overs losing six wickets. Nepal had scored 269 in 44 overs in a loss of six wickets and the game stopped due to a light (visibility) problem. However, Nepal won the match with 9 runs based on DLS (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern) method and qualified for ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.

Some of you might be worrying about the calculations of the method and I am trying to simplify it here. First of all, we need to have the DLS table for calculations.

Since there were 6 overs left for 50 overs and Nepal lost 6 wickets, the table for that condition corresponds to the value, of 16.4. This simply means Nepal has 16.4% of resources or runs left. While comparing with UAE's run rate, if UAE would have not used 16.4% of their runs or considering the use of 100%-16.4% = 83.6% of the runs only, their total runs would be 311*0.836 = 259.99 runs. So in a situation of 44 overs and with a loss of 6 wickets, the total score for UAE would be 260 where as it was 269 for Nepal. Hence, Nepal won the match with 9 runs.

Google input tools for Nepali

I was always using unicode Nepali font online through webpage to type in Nepali language but recently came to know about 'Google Input Tools'. There are different fonts you can choose from the list. Nepali is one of them. You can just go to the website Google input tools and choose the font you would like to install. After intallation, you will have options in your taskbar (English or the font you have just installed, for example Nepali). You can select or deselect English or Nepali by overlaying mouse cursor over the language option in the taskbar. Enjoy typing in Nepali.

Fast synchronization of Google drive and Dropbox files in local drive

Now a days using Google drive and Dropbox are common for file storage. An important benefit of these applications is access of the file from multiple devices and places without carrying local or external devices like USB, hard disk or CDs where internet facility is available. There would not be a problem to access, work on, modify and synchronize the file even at poor internet connection situations. However, if there are numbers of files need to be uploaded or downloaded, it will take a long time, even hours or days. Similarly, if your computer crashes or you re-installed operating system, then synchronization of your thousands of files even at good internet connection takes time. If you have to or are re-installing your operating system, it is advised to copy all your folders and files inside Google drive or Dropbox folders in your device (C:/ drive) to other drive location (e.g., D:/ or E:/) or external device. After installation of the operating system and Google drive or Dropbox program, if you copied those files to respective folders, synchronization will not take time. You can start working with your files. Otherwise it will take same amount of time required to upload or download individual files so time required to synchronization your all files depends upon total file sizes and internet speed.

Solution of Google Nexus 7 data transferring problem

I had problem in data transferring from Google Nexus 7 tablet to computer or laptop so I searched for possible solution in internet but didn't help much. I found some tips to change in setup and some on installing software. Even after trying possible options, my computer did not recognize the device. The setup option as stated for the device, there was nothing to change especially for windows based programs. It should just recognize as soon as the device is connected with the cable. However, the device was on charging mode but not in data transfer mode. I requested my friend to connect my Nexus in his mac book thinking the windows system is not recognizing the device. The problem was same i.e., only in charging mode. Finally, I came to know the problem - the problem was the cable. The cable supplied with the device was only charging cable (I am not sure if it has been broken!). I bought the new cable (data cable, little expensive than general charging cable only) and connected to my windows 7 system. Now the Google Nexus 7 is recognized and I could transfer files. Those who are facing the data transferring problem with this device, please check with the cable. In market there are two different cables (data cable and charging cable), they look similar but function differently (data cable works for both functions but charging cable works only to charge the device).

Firefox is already running but not running in reality problem

These days, I have strange problem with my Firefox. When I run Firefox and do the job without any problem. As soon as I close the Firefox and re-open or run, it says "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." like in the picture. I am not sure whether it is due to virus, spam or hardware failure.

I tried to solve the problem as per the suggestions found in internet but they worked just for once. Hence if you have any suggestions besides deleting parent.lock file or whole profile file or changing the profile folder from read only to read/write..., please help.

Solution to hidden and shortcuts of files and folders due to virus

If you are using pendrives and external drives to transfer files between different computers, you might have encounter different virus or spam problems. Either your drive infects other computer or other computer infects your storage device depending upon the existing infection. No matter from where the infection starts, the virus hides your files and you will only see shortcuts. The files are there in your drive but not accessible. The situation is not very pleasant so to recover your files, the easy way is just to recover them manually with basic commands (Windows xp version).
1. Delete all the shortcuts in your drive.
2. Delete suspected file if any.
3. Click "Start" bottom.
4. Click "Run" ( a run window will appear)
5. Type "cmd" without quotes in the command line and press Enter key.
6. You will see black screen.
7. Just type driver letter of your drive. Example, "G:" or "H:" or so on (without quotes).
8. Now just type the following command: "attrib *.* -r -s -h /s /d" (without quotes)

Now your drive will show all hidden files including folders and subfolders.

2069 SLC Result

The Office of the Controller of Examinations (OCE) has published the results of the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) exams held from March 14-22 of the year 2069. According to the sources, only 42 percent get through this exam this year. Due to different reasons, infrastructure, availability of books, concern teachers, and influence of political parties, national strikes and so on students were severely affected which is reflected by the results. Manage living with 24 days of electricity in a year

People say that Nepal is rich in hydropower and could generate electricity to fulfill its total need as well as sell to neighboring countries. However, the current situation is probably worse in the world. I am saying 'worse' in the sense that the electricity provided by the government of Nepal to its people is very limited, we have calculation below. The country is under load shedding for more than 14 hours per day as per the government electricity authority site (www.nea.org.np). However the exact hours of electricity distributed by the organization are really of no use or not in the prime time of use for general public. What is the use of electricity provided between 10pm to 6am to public? When the public actually require electricity to light their homes or cook their food between 6-9am in morning and 6-9pm in the evening. These six hours are the prime electricity need and use time for Nepali people. Hence, let's see the load shedding time table of Nepal. Here is an example of sector 3.

Usual electricity use (household) in morning is from 06am – 09am and in evening is from 06pm – 09pm.

The table shows that the usable total hours of electricity per week is 12 hours, which means total of 48 hours in a month. What a shame to live in a place where there is complete two days electricity in a month or just 24 days of electricity in a year.

New versions of fake/ spam mails, beware!

I got an email recently and it looks like a good intention email or not a fake or spam email. However, the way how it has been sent and the information it is asking is suspicious. As far as I know, university and colleges has their own official websites and email address of the same website format email address. The email below has information on IHS, the Netherlands (www.ihs.nl) , the application form as an attachment but if we look closely the email, the person is sending email from gmail not of @ihs.nl address. Similarly, the person is asking to send application and other information to ihs.study5@gmail.com address where as the official email of admission office of the ihs is admission@ihs.nl. Another very important information to claim this email is fake is that the IHS has online application system but this email is asking to fill a form.

I am sharing this so that you might be aware not to send your personal information to unknown person thinking that you are applying for a study and might get scholarship for the study. Beware and check if you are sending your information to the right person while filling a form or sending your valuable information.

Autorun.inf of Panda USB Vaccine can be deleted!

I was facing a problem of malwares and viruses frequently. Those malwares like Conficker worm used to spread while I was plugging same USB drive in different computers or others are using their drives in my computer for file sharing or printing. The most frequent problem was "AutoRun" file on these devices. Sometimes it used to crash the computer and in other time it used to delete or hide folders. It used to spread so fast that without notice all devices used to be infected by this problem. I was looking for the solution and there were some. However it was consuming too much time.

Finally, I came to know about "Panda USB Vaccine" and used the free version. It worked and solved the problem as stated in its website "It offers a double layer of preventive protection, allowing users to disable the AutoRun feature on computers as well as on USB drives and other devices". Now there are two concerns, one is "Autorun.inf" produced by vaccine itself as it is confusing whether it is the "good" autorun or bad autorun file. Another is "USB drives that have been vaccinated cannot be reversed except with a format". In some blogs, it is even stated that autorun.inf file produced by vaccine is not deleted by other operating systems like linux. However, I am happy to inform you that I could delete 'autorun.inf' file produced by Panda USB Vaccine through Puppy Linux 4.3.1. I don't know whether this is really 'reverse' or not.

F-Secure Computer Not Protected

I was using F-Secure security system for many years but I face unknown problem at present. The antivirus definition files are up to date but I see a warning message "Your computer is not protected". Then I checked with the 'other settings' of Settings, then I can see the information on updates. The virus definition, spyware definition and deep guard file are up to date. However, the virus definition date is weird (see the picture). I don't know how it happened and how to correct it. If you know the solution, please help. When I check with the website of F-secure, I have to download whole program, which I think is unnecessary.

Salary of Professor in Nepal

I tried to search for the exact salary condition of academic people in Nepal and I could get it for only very few organizations. The salary offered for highest academic positions along with allowance seems very low for me. The monthly salary amount listed here is without government tax reduction. I wonder how they could manage their daily expenditure in a condition of high inflation rate and current market price of Nepal.

School Leaving Certificate SLC 2068 results

The Office of the Controller of Examinations published the result of SLC 2068 with 55.5 % sucess as regular and 17.3% from the partial category. Out of 496,243 total students appeared in the exam, 30,111 students have passed with distinction, 82619 with first division, 109,795 with second division and 8241 with third division.

No time value for embassy of Denmark in Nepal

Schengen visa in Nepal is issued by the embassy of Denmark, Lazimpat, Kathmandu. The visa process and its rules are defined by individual country or embassy/consular section. No one can ask do this or that but one can suggest systematic process for visa application. This post is for the same purpose.

If you want to apply visa for Schengen countries, what you will do?

Definitely, you will fill the application form with required documents as stated in the embassy website and go to embassy. You may have already seen that the visa section opens from Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 12:00 and you may appear at the gate between those days around 10:00 but that would be too late for you. Why?

Because there would be other people waiting to submit the application. There might be 'unofficial' name list of queue but that never works in order. Guards have full authority on it. Now, you have two options, come next day earlier than others or put your name in the list and wait.

Whats a big deal to wait since you are submitting an application and you are in queue?

Its a big deal since no one knows whether you will get time to submit your application or not. One may think that the one who reached between the consular hour (10:00-12:00) would get time to submit application but it is the time the section works. It is just the working hour of the section in spite of the number of applicants waiting to submit their application. If it took 30 minutes to process the application of a person, 5th number wastes time of waiting at the embassy gate for four hours. Similarly, if took just 5 minutes then even queue number 24 can also submit application. How long it takes to submit the application is never known. Sometimes, only 6 applications are received and sometimes up to 15. The concern is if one would know whether s/he would get time to submit application s/he would wait in queue and rest can come tomorrow but no one knows about it. Neither the guard nor the officials in the embassy. They just want you to wait and see. Their simple answer is 'come early tomorrow! we can do nothing!'. Coming tomorrow is not a problem but uncertainty of getting turn is a problem. How many times you need to visit the embassy and wait till the clock hits 12:00? Is there no value of time for others?

It is better to realize by the embassy that there are increasing number of applications as they can only issue schengen visa in Nepal. The applicant will visit the embassy for sure so if there would be a ticket system (pre-date booking) or fix number of application processed per day, one would not waste time standing or lying on street at the embassy gate (there is no waiting place at gate for visitors).

Irresponsible ministry and Nepal tourism year 2011

Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation of Nepal has declared year 2011 as ‘Visit Nepal Tourism Year 2011’ to attract tourists from all over the world. The time has almost come and there are very less activities for the event. There could be announcement and advertisement in international media, on web, Nepalese consular sections or embassies to attract tourists. Simple social networks could also be helpful for it.

A week back, when I was at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), I was surprised to see how well the ministry has planned for Tourism Year. First of all, there was so long queue at passport control for departure that delayed most of the airlines by an hour. Again, for security check, there was single door to pass through (though there were 3 doors with security check machines). So you could imagine the crowd at rush time at TIA. After sometime when there was such long queue, they started ‘fast security check’ but didn’t bother to start other gates.

After security check, there were two lobbies for rest before boarding. I saw a information screen and television in each lobby. Each television was with cable channel of neighboring country in loud volume. I don’t understand the purpose of television and with movie channel in language neither international (which can be understand by many passengers) nor in national (if targeted to own citizens). Are we promoting someone’s culture, tradition, language and business at the cost of our tax money? Who is doing this for what shake?

It would be much nicer if those televisions would have been used to promote Nepalese tourism. It should have displayed pictures of Nepal or documentary especially prepared for tourism. Nepal Tourism Board has such materials and they could be played continuously so that the tourists who were leaving the country would know about the next event in Nepal. They will definitely convey the message to their family and friends. They may also see the place or culture or tradition which they might have missed in this visit and would like to come again after seeing on the screen. Even if they see the thing they have already visited, they may be excited to see on screen and discuss each other. Last moment event is memorable for long so the best way to use those televisions is promote tourism in Nepal.

Dormant account within six months

When a person do not use the account for longer period of time or inactive status of bank account is termed as 'dormant account'. The account may receive normal deposits during this phase but account holder can not make transaction especially taking out money. This is like 'in is allowed but out is not permitted'.

More than three dozens of bank are being operated in Nepal. The are providing different facilities due to competition in the market but they are not thinking about 'dormant account'. Lastly, I was out of the station for four months and may be I have not used my account for two months before I left. I arrived at airport and tried to draw local currency that can be used for food or taxi but my card did not work. The situation during that time was very uncomfortable. I had money in my account but I could not make use of it. Then I started thinking whats the use to keep money in bank? Whats the use of visa or credit cards? when they can not solve my problem as required. Later I came to know that the account was dormant as I have not made any transaction for six months. I went to bank and filled the form to make it active and it is active now. During the same visit to bank I requested to extend the dormant time of six months to one year or ask me before making it dormant but they simply refused the request. In many countries, normally, the bank would inform the customer two to three times prior to the account becoming dormant and if they do not get response, take action on it.

Bank would usually say that they make dormant for your account for security reasons or keep your money safe but actually, they want to be sure to use your money for free. Once your account becomes dormant, they can use your money for further investment as you can not use your money till you get permission from bank to make your account active. Sometimes the bank employee has misused such accounts as they know which accounts are dormant and for how long. There were news of such events in news paper too. Though there are rules that banks should send the dormant accounts money (if never claimed) should be the property of nation but bank don't want to send that money to the state and they keep it in the bank.

Browsers crash while printing

For the last few days, I am facing a printing problem, which was not known to me before. If I want to print a browser content to my printer, Canon Laser Shot LBP-1210, the application crashes. I have Windows Xp with recent update (SP3). I was using Mozilla Firefox as my browser when I got following error, I checked with Internet Explorer, Google Chrome but all gave me same problem. I even tried with notepad and got problem. While checking with MS word or excel, there is no problem of printing. I can make pdf files from any applications (browsers as mentioned above). I reinstalled the printer drivers from the CD that came along with printer. I even uninstalled browsers application and reinstalled with latest versions. I installed latest Java thinking that that could be a problem. But the problem is still there. I use Microsoft Security Essential (updated) as virus protection and it does not show any problem on full scan. What to do to solve the problem? Please help.

No international roaming for Ncell

Spice Nepal Pvt Ltd is one of the private mobile service provider in Nepal. It has recently changed it name from 'Mero mobile' to 'Ncell'. When it started it new tariff 'Rs 1.99' for any networks throughout Nepal, I also became a member of it (Pre-Paid). Since it is a multinational company, the chances that the same sim can work in other countries, international roaming, was high. Actually, it had some countries where I can use the sim to reach my country in spite of its cost. When I checked the website of Ncell, I was very excited to see that it works for India, Kazakhstan, Sri Lanka and Turkey (see http://www.ncell.com.np/prepaid/roaming/international). It happened that I have to visit India and Sri Lanka few weeks back and I took the mobile with Ncell sim within it. I tried to connect through automatic and manual search to network in India and Sri Lanka but it did not connect to any networks. I was surprised to the situation. How could such a multinational company can claim that it works on roaming and not working? Who is responsible for the false information on it? If you are also visiting these countries and have Ncell sim, please try and check if that works to you.

Stupid advertisement

I was stunned by an advertisement on national news paper (Kantipur) of Nepal dated 8 sept. 2010. The ad was about a business sale of TATA car (see picture). The message is in Nepal language and in its translation, the message is: Do you know? This Dashain, only dumbs don't buy TATA.

How can a company call all the people 'Dumb' if they don't buy a TATA car?. If I won't want or I don't have money to buy this car, am I dumb? Do I need to buy this car to be smart?. The company is trying to sell their products through nice advertisement but they don't have right to call others 'dumb' just for not buying their products. I also don't understand how such advertisement could be published in national newspaper. If someone sue both companies, how can they prove that 'TATA not buyers are dumb". The advertiser and publisher might have not realized that this ad could be most stupid in the market.

Hospital beds are expensive than hotel beds

Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH), generally known as 'Teaching Hospital', is one of the government hospital in Nepal. The charge for general checkup, lab analysis, admission to hospital and other investigation costs are subsidized due to governmental funds. The hospital also runs 'Extended Hospital Service (EHS), which is costly as the charge is similar as in private clinic or private hospitals. The general check up and operation cost compare to private hospital is low but all costs are not subsidized. While comparing to lab tests, the cost is similar to some of the private labs. Many doctors recommend to have lab analysis in private labs especially if you visit doctor in EHS. Most of the lab equipments might be not working or operators are in leave or there are many waiting for their turn which may take even months to get their turn so patients are forced to visit private labs or centers.

Last week, I have to visit a doctor who only checks in TUTH either in general or EHS. The doctor recommend to get admitted for detail investigation. There were no beds to get admission. After waiting and searching for some hours, I got a bed but 'cabin' bed. The cost for it was about $14 per day but a room with attached toilet and single bed. The common bed in general rooms is about $1 per day. I had no options so I got admitted in spite of high cost. It was very surprising and came very expensive later when I came to know that all the other costs are also charged higher for the bed I have taken. The lab and other diagnosis costs are more than 33% higher for the cabin bed than general beds. There might be a policy to charge high for 'haves' and compensate the charge for 'have nots' but cabin bed is not always taken by 'haves' one. In my case too, I was forced to take cabin bed due to compulsion. Now, how can a hospital decide to charge me under 'haves' category? Another very important issue is the hospital authority neither told me about this extra charge nor inform others through any means. I have not known this charge before. With the more charge for bed per day and other analysis costs, the hospital bed cost me more than a luxurious hotel bed in Nepal at the end.

I was using free web site provided by "Geocities" but that was almost a decade ago. Afterwards, same site was bought by Yahoo and it was free through Yahoo for some time. Last year it stopped free service so I don't have website because I don't earn from my site to host by paying. However, I feel to have my site again. While searching, I got many such sites and different offers. I am little bit confused to register them as they say 'free' and there are hidden charges. Some are really free but have their banner or advertisement in the pages. That must be their business strategy. Among such searched sites, I like the one, its theme "Free web site for all". Only 360 days in a Year

We all know that there are 365 days in a year except during leap year. Do you know how many days are there in a year for Nepal Telecom Company (NTC), a major tele company of Nepal?. It should consider 365 as normal but not. It only considers 360 days in a year. I didn't know this before till I find problem in my ADSL plan. I was paying the bill every month thinking that the monthly bill covers total days of perticular month but I got disconnected a day before the actual date. When I inquired about it, NTC told me that no matter how many days are there in a month, it calculates only 30 days. That means even you pay for a yearly bill (365 days), you don't get service for 5 days. What a system? Do you know, NTC disconnects you at midnight and counts the day of connection as one day in spite of time (You again loose 12 hours of connection as the office opens at 10:00 and re-connection may take 2 hours after payment). Is there any consumer rights organizations or medias to voice this issue?

DV 2011 result for Nepalese

Thousands of people from Nepal fill DV form with a dream to live in USA. Only few are lucky enough to be selected and among those few are given visa by the embassy. There is even an organization called 'victim of DV' in Nepal. That also shows how crazy are people to fill DV form and try to go US. It is not easy to get the information whether DV form filler got the lottery or not. Some organizations get the list (I am not sure if that is valid one or not) and publish on their website. Yes, official site, general post office give information of the letters received from their website www.gpo.gov.np but other private company also publish the list on their own or from the information received from post office. Sometimes the post office is behind to update the information where as other websites update with latest information. I don't know how this happens with out getting information from post office. It is also not good to publish the list and the address without the consent of individual but not for business purpose, I am publishing this information gathered from the post office website so that one can get information just in one file. Here is the list of 1112 people whose first letter has been arrived in the post office, Kathmandu. Wish you all good luck. Better luck in next lot or next time for those who are not in this list.
