The picture was very busy and had lots of cluttered elements.
Our task was to simplify in order to improve the overall composition and readability of the scene.

Here's the reference:

image curtesy Terry Miura

First task was to decide on the composition. I cropped the image as follows:

and I got started

After adding an imprematura with yellow ocre, I quickly added some general shapes, deviding the panel and starting to compose the image.

The centre part of the reference image had a lot of cluttered vehicles, which were making things hard to read. I had to simplify so I left out some cars and shifted others to a different location.

At this stage I also started to think about the feel and mood this painting should express.

Being selective also means working on edges and determining the amount of detail required. The further one looks away from the main focal point, the less detail is added, to avoid distraction.

All in all this was a lot harder than expected and this kind of exercise is really inviting me to do more similar paintings.

Straight Forward - 40cm x 30cm - Oil on panel

ENG - January is already coming to it's end, and only now am I uploading my first of the year.
I kinda rediscovered pineapples lately, they are so yummie! A colleague at work told me you can tell if they are good to eat when you can pluck the leaves from the top centre.

Life is nothing but a stack of piles. Piles that build up as time goes by. Here's the first pile I had at hand... There is so much to learn from the old masters. Da Vinci's notes are at the bottom, not because he's my least favourite, but I see his notes as a message to me... learn by observing but most of all by acting. I must find it all out by myself. Piles... more to paint!

ENG - Yesterday's painting has a lot of issues. Namely drawing, composition and most importantly the poor lighting setup. Today, I tried painting a tangerine once more, but this time in a completely different setup. I took my time composing this one but I think it paid off. The effect of translucency is now very present, don't you agree?

It's been ages since the last post. I've been busy with other things than painting, unfortunately. I needed time to get used to my new life. I have been painting at the academy, but haven't been able to make pictures of my work yet. Anyway, here's a small study of a tangerine. The effect of translucency isn't as strong as I'd hoped. I guess that's why we usually see tangerines on a darker background. I may try that tomorrow.

The fact that the mini-cup has an intense color creates another interesting contrast with the pear's colors. It was challenging though, because the orange of the cup was so intense I had trouble to keep the focus on the pear.

Tomorrow is my first day at my new job... so excited!
Wish me luck!

ENG - I found this small copper little pan and although I have absolutely no idea what it would be used for (if you do know, please enlighten me?), I wanted to paint it when I saw it. The leafs are from one of the 2 apple trees in our garden.
I struggled with this one, in fact, I nearly gave up on it last night.
It seemed I had forgotten everything I learned so far, but I realized that the best thing to do was not to give up but to try again until I found a solution. And I did.

Lijsterbessen

I was unemployed since the beginning of july due to the fact that our whole department at my previous employer was transferred to Panama. ENG - Wow! I thought this one would be easy and could be done in 2hrs or so... NOT! Had a really hard time with the colors and it took me more than 6 hours (with a break of an hour in between). Working small does not necessarily mean you can work faster, on the contrary. It usually takes longer because the margin for errors in brushwork is a lot smaller. I guess I just need more practice.

NL - Wow! Niets was minder waar!

ENG - As weird as it may be to some, I never ate an aubergine (eggplant) before in my life.I don't know why that is. I know my mum didn't cook any. Perhaps that is why I never felt the desire to eat it. However, I was at the grocery store last week and I saw these eggplant fruits so I thought I'd try one in a still life. After all, one learns a lot from trying new things. I'm glad I did, Eggplants have this deep rich reddish purple hue which I really like. When I was setting up my still life, I took out this square panel I had prepared and set it on my easel. My youngest daughter Inèz was in the studio and she said "Why don't you paint a diamond painting?"
So I did.

Toy Train

I've been wondering if my paintings will sell, and more specifically, at what price. I'm not much of a marketing expert, far from it actually, so I'll have to experiment a bit. I've put some paintings on Ebay for bidding, and others are available directly from the blog at a fixed price. To think that someone likes my work so much that he or she is willing to pay money for it... that would surely boost the confidence, and I'm sure it would show in my future.

ENG - Every now and then, I go to a store called SPIT, which is a recycling store. People that have stuff they don't need just drop it off there at no charge, while others find things there which are really nice or interesting to them. I found the vase and the blue glass there recently so I thought I'd do a color study with them (orange and blue being complementary). I added the tomatoe to spice things up a bit: it's bright red colors are much warmer than the orange of the vase and the cool green and blue of the glass. Even though these objects look and feel totally different, they seem to fit well together. Maybe if it were people we were talking about, they'd be friends...

ENG - I wanted to experiment with a main subject that doesn't have very vibrant colors that is surrounded by less important objects that do have very vibrant hues. In real life, I'm not someone who aims to always be in the spotlight, yet, I am often surrounded by vibrant characters. What do you think? Have I managed to pull your eye to the teabag, regardless it's colorful surroundings?

ENG - I have to admit that I am blown away by Qiang Huang's work. His clever color usage (often bright and saturated colors surrounded by subtil greys), his brushwork and his willingness to step out of his comfort zone (I even saw an abstract landscape on his blog) are extremely inspiring.

I usually mix my greys with ultramarine and burnt sienna, but there are other methods, so I'm going to explore mixing different greys. Here I used Cerulean Blue with Burnt Sienna this time, resulting in greenish greys. I also focused on keeping the brushwork loose. The result is quite a fresh looking painting. What do you think?

ENG - I wanted to try this after seeing a milk chocolate still life by Jacob Collins.

I was struggling with the aluminium wrap. Not only was this very challenging in terms of tones, in it's current position, it is very dominant within the composition, so I chose not to work up the wrap too detailed. The light bouncing on the chocolate from the wrap was very interesting and appealing to me. I will for sure do more of these.

My dad painted this crazy man 40 years ago or so. I always admired the little portrait for it's humorous appearance. The painting, somehow, got lost but he always kept the postcard so I decided to paint it too when he recently gave it to me.

The show is meant to attract new students and displays work of all students of all disciplines from the past schoolyear. Like every year, the year passed so fast I am surprized to notice it is time for a forced break of nearly three months again. I'm looking forward to continue my journey in september.
Here are some of the studies I painted in 2011
I've done this with a particular reason in mind, namely me being primarly focussed on fine art since last year. The address www.johanderycke.com will be used to present my fine art paintings and drawings in the future. This blog will be part of it too, but it will no longer be the main page.
So anyone who is having problems seeing this blog, please change back the url to http://www.johanderycke.blogspot.com/ or copy paste the URL in your properties of your favourites.
Thanks and hope you're all well!
The experts from Sotheby's explain briefly why this is such a masterpiece and you can see some nice detail shots of the front and the back. I'm afraid this is probably the best view we will have on this painting now, because it sold last year in July for nearly 30 million pounds. I'm beginning to understand why following the art market can be interesting for artists just as well as for collectors... it's a chance for us to go and see such tremendous paintings before they disappear in the private atmosphere (sometimes for decades).
