Biggest Challeneges for Entrepreneurs

When I saw the January issue of Entrepreneur Magazine I was thrilled. Cover copy had a teaser on it to the effect that entrepreneurs had been surveyed and inside were their answers. I was certain that, finally, someone was paying attention to entrepreneurs who were striving for a successful business. It was time to hear from us little guys!

I can’t tell you how surprised I was as I began to read the article. Their idea of an “entrepreneur” and mine were as different as night and day. I always classified an entrepreneur as someone like the “Mom and Pop” coffee shop around the corner, the family run produce market in town, or the 18 to 24 year old who had come up with a fantastic “gizmo” and was scooped up into a corporation as their newest genius. Let me give you a quote from the article that will clue you into its idea of an “entrepreneur”.

To explain the method used for the survey they state, “Entrepreneur magazine and PricewaterhouseCoopers “Entrepreneurial Challenges Survey” is an annual telephone survey of more than 300 CEOs of privately held, U.S.-based businesses recognized for their sustained, rapid growth. They average $31.5 million in annual revenue with an average of 185 employees, and have an ongoing annual growth rate of more than 23 percent……”

That definitely was not my picture of an entrepreneur. I don’t know too many entrepreneurs who average $31.5 million annually, or employ 185 people. To me, that’s a pretty successful company on its way to being a corporation. We should all be such entrepreneurs!

At any rate, I continued reading and I must say the information was worth the read, and the business of doing business can apply to those of us who aren’t quite making that $31.5 million per year yet. Here’s what the survey discovered.

What were considered their biggest challenges for 2006?

73% - Retention of key workers
38% - Developing new products/services
36% - Expansion to domestic markets
35% - Increased productivity
28% - Upgrading technology
23% - Creating business alliances
21% - Better management of cash flow
14% - Expansion outside the U.S.
13% - Improving risk management
11% - Finding new financing
11% - Buying another company or launching a spinoff
7% - Preparing company for sale
2% - Going public

Now when you stop and think about it, that’s pretty much what most entrepreneurs think about each year. Maybe not to the extent of expanding to foreign markets or launching a spinoff, but to keep your business perking along the road of improvement - all the rest are considered.

The next part of the survey was interesting because entrepreneurs were given a list of several “wild-card” factors that could affect business in 2006. When asked which three would be most harmful to their business, here’s what they said:

47% - Unstable U.S. economy
43% - Rising health-care costs
41% - Shortage of qualified workers
40% - Weak market demand
24% - Rising oil/energy costs
24% - Rising interest rates
22% - New government regulations
18% - Weaker capital spending
14% - Weakening world economy
12% - Increased global competition
11% - Decreased access to capital
10% - Sudden drop in U.S. real estate market
10% - Tax increases
9% - Inflation

So maybe my entrepreneurs and those surveyed are not really that much different in thinking. The outlook of most entrepreneurs is probably optimistic, or will be unless more unforeseen disasters strike.

Even after the huge devastation of 9/11, within two quarters we were back to the same level of optimism as we had before. People get used to dealing with tough circumstances and factor them in, but are not swayed by them. When you really think about it; isn’t that what most entrepreneurs are like?

If they’re not, then they aren’t entrepreneurs by my way of thinking.

Some webmasters try to use articles from free content directories to get visitors to their site and make some money. This is mostly important for those who have just begun working as an affiliate for several companies and do not yet have any funding, yet need to built small niche websites to visitors to their site so that they can begin making revenue.

Although this can sometimes be the only option for those who are running on a non-existent budget, it is not a way that will effectively build your website or revenue. There are a few potential reasons why this may be detrimental to your business building efforts.

Problem #1 - Search Engines

Search engines will only look down upon your site if it has the exact same duplicated content than other sites. The more sites that share your content, the less it will help you achieve good search engine rankings.

Good search engine rankings are essential in getting visitors to your sit so that they have a chance to click on your affiliate links. If you cannot even get visitors, then will never make an revenue. Working on the search engine optimization of your site so that you will eventually be high enough in the results to get customers, should be priority one.

Problem #2 - Getting visitors to click

This poses a problem because most author bylines include links. When a reader gets done reading a really intriguing article, there is a strong possibility that they will click on the author’s byline link rather than your affiliate links. This is the entire reason why these authors offer free content to begin with, so that they may get their name and links out there to the public. Using this type of content may mean shooting yourself in the foot and losing possible profitable website visitors.
Once you put these three problems together, you are looking at a serious decline in revenue simply because you used free website content from article directories. Although it may be the only option for some, if you have the funds to buy your own original content, then you should go this route. If you don’t have the finds, however, you may be better off writing your own content and then hiring professional services once you have made a profit to work with.

What if I Need Customization?

Every shopping cart I have installed, designed, and configured, has required some customization. In most cases, the client wanted to do something the cart did not do. For example, one client wanted the ability to send a custom email with specific products so he could send special instructions whenever a customer ordered a specific product. A few shopping carts have this ability, but most don't.

The best solution is to first determine your specific shopping cart requirements and then find a cart that fits your needs. Unfortunately, it's hard to find a cart that does EVERYTHING you want it to do. If this is the case, you'll need to have some custom development done to add a new function to the cart.

Keep in mind that many popular shopping carts have dozens of Modifications and Plugins that you can add to the shopping cart software to make it fulfill your requirements.

Note: If you use a leased shopping cart, you will probably not be able to make modifications to the software.

Home Businesses - Satisfaction & Stunning Success or Disappointment & Dismal Disaster?

So you're thinking about starting a home business. Good for you! Starting your own business can be one of the best decisions you ever made - or one of the worst mistakes you ever made!

How can you know how it will work out for you? Even more important, how can you tell whether you're headed for success or disaster before you invest a lot of time, money, and energy in starting your new business?

Let's start by clarifying vocabulary here. Many people use the terms "home business" and "working for yourself" as meaning pretty much the same thing.

"Working for yourself" can include business plans such as opening a franchise store (think McDonalds, UPS Store, Baskin-Robbins, etc.) Those franchise businesses can become wildly successful for you - after you invest tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of dollars in front money. They also often require at least a year's worth of constant hard work before you start to see profits coming in. These businesses also require substantial amounts of "overhead" money (store rent, buying merchandise to sell, possibly paying other people to work for you, etc). That's fine if you have a lot of money and time to invest - not so great if you don't have all that extra money and time. Sadly, many people who attempt to start a business such as these end up in the "Dismal Disaster" camp.

"Home business" can also mean many different things - doing independent consulting in your area of expertise, running a small daycare center, joining various "party" plans (cosmetics, candles, kitchen goods, etc.). Again, all of these ideas can earn good money for you - after you invest a fair amount of time and front money in them.

In this article, I'm going to focus on a completely different vision of how to start "working for yourself at home." Wouldn't it be great if you could start your own business, work at home with your own computer, work on the schedule you choose, spend practically no "front money," make as much money as you choose to, and see that money start coming in practically right away? (You also don't need any college degree or other technical knowledge.) Sound good? It is!

The business plan I'm talking about here is called "internet affiliate marketing." Never heard of it? Don't feel alone - probably 90% of the people in the world have never heard of the idea. It's just one more of those awesome possibilities that has been created by the practically unlimited power and the sheer enormity of today's internet universe.

However, unlike many aspects of working with a computer and the internet, this plan requires absolutely no technical knowledge of either one of them. Can't even guess how fast your computer modem is (or even what it is)? No problem! No clue what HTML is (or why anyone else cares)? Doesn't matter! If you can use email and do a few Google searches, you can make good money with internet affiliate marketing.

This is the basic idea

Internet affiliate marketing is just referral-based selling and then collecting commissions from your sales. Don't freak out - you don't have to knock on doors, make phone calls, have parties, buy start-up kits, pay for advertising, or any of the things that may have just popped into your head. Here, briefly, is how it works.

1) A lot of people would like information about a lot of different things.

2) There is a lot of very good information for sale on the internet.

3) You locate information that would be valuable to other people (easy).

4) You tell them where to find the information (also easy to do).

5) If they buy that information, you earn a nice commission.

6) Most product owners pay between 50% and 75% commission on their products (that can mean you earn as much as $50 - $75 for each sale).

6) The company that pays the commissions pays out every two weeks, just like clockwork.

That's it. It's that simple. Obviously, there are more details, but that's the overall idea.
