Hey everyone! We are blasting towards the end of 2020 and, as you may know, or maybe not, 2021 will bring a switching of source charts for this show! I've been using the Alternative Songs airplay chart for a little over 10 years, but next year we're going to give the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart a shot. It will reflect the airplay as well as the streaming and purchasing of songs. So it'll be more in the hands of the people!

This episode was a lot of fun and it also brought one of my favorite songs of 2020 onto the show!

Alright. Here we are, back in the saddle. One of the best things about switching to monthly posts is that I can get fairly behind but I'm still not all that behind, if you take my meaning. So here is the countdown for the month of July. I've been working very hard to get caught up on all my editing and I think I'm going to hopefully be able to finish the year with a sigh of relief from a job well done! This is a good countdown and it contains the debut of a song that you're going to want to pay attention to now, so that you can remember where you were when we're still talking about it months and months and months later!

It's always nice when I don't even have to watch the video for this post because I've seen it several times already. I watched it once on my own, watched it twice with my kids, probably watched it again on my own, saw a making-of video. This has been a big deal and the fact that Old Town Road is holding this one from #1 speaks volumes. I love this song and I'm excited for the album

Top Ten Wednesday Double Feature: Sam Smith & Normani "Dancing With a Stranger" and Khalid "Talk"

This week we have a couple of interesting songs (because I sat with the first one open on my computer and never ended up posting about it...) that are linked, it turns out. The first is a collaboration between Sam Smith and Normani.

It's a very classic sounding song where, as usual, the word "dancing" means something else entirely

And then we have a solo track from Khalid (who I have previously done a Top Ten Tuesday on his collaboration with Normani! Connections!) that is also very enjoyable. Very colorful. I'm excited about this guy!

Hey hey everyone! So I've got two songs for you this week. The first is the first single from the Jonas Brothers in 6 years and it was so anticipated and so ravenously received that it became the 34th single to debut at #1 (the last one was Ariana Grande's "7 Rings" which was part of the last Top Ten Tuesday. I apparently can't handle #1 debuts lol). This song is good, but I wonder if people mostly hear it as a Nick Jonas/DNCE collaboration. I don't know what the Jonas Brothers sounded like, really, so that's what it sounds like to me, which isn't all bad actually!

And then this song I guess is part of a Red Dead Redemption meme? And then Billy Ray Cyrus jumped on a collaboration with the original rapper and then the song jumped from #15 straight up to #1!

So it looks like I haven't posted on here in almost a month which is wild, but don't worry. There are posts coming. Oh you better believe it. Keep watching this space. I missed TTT last week, so here's a twofer.

First, the Ariana Grande song that debuted at #1 last week. It's good. It feels a little like a sketch more than a complete song, but I only listened to it once, so I'm happy to be proven wrong on that take.

And then a J. Cole song that moves up 22 positions this week. No music video yet, but it's a pretty good song!

This is the first song in the history of the Hot 100 to replace another song by the same artist, where both songs debuted at #1. Which is pretty cool. I like when history gets made. It also samples "Ex-Factor" by Lauryn Hill, and I hope that leads to a whole new group of people discovering THAT amazing album.

I like this song and video quite a bit!

There was a time, early on in this countdown's life, where I would constantly have computer problems and would have to figure out ways around them. That is what I dealt with, with this episode as my computer has fallen very ill. But I am hopeful that it is on the mend. This episode was entirely recorded while I waited for Nicole from Apple to call me back. Which is not a dig against Nicole. She has been awesome and I recognize that she is not only dealing with me.

ANYways. This was a good countdown. I hope that the musical differences between my vocals and the songs isn't too jarring. Enjoy!

Incidentally, here's the Wikipedia synopsis of what A Summer Place was, which is something I've never known.

We've got two songs for the year 1968. I was confused because I thought, "But I know the words to 'Grazing in the Grass'!" And then I realized it was an instrumental cover. The 60's were crazy, man. AND HOLD THE PHONE. The instrumental was the original! The version that I know by The Friends of Distinction came out a year later. That really is insane.
