This house located in Snajhih Taiwan and design by Marco Casagrande and Frank Chen. From the architects "The house is realized on an old Japanese cherry-farm in the Datun -mountains of North-Taiwan. It is designed as a vessel to react on the demanding wind, flooding and heat conditions on the site. The house is a stick raised above the ground in order to let the flood waters run under it. The different spaces are connected to a flexible movement within the axis of outdoor and indoor functions. The smaller bathroom and kitchen unit acts as a kicker stabilizing the wooden structure during the frequent typhoons and earthquakes.
The bio-climatic architecture is designed to catch the cool breeze from the Datun -river during the hot days and to let in the small winds circulating on the site between the fresh water reservoir pond and the farmlands. A fire place is used during the winter for heating and for cooking tea. In connection with the bathroom is a small sauna.
The house is not strong or heavy – it is weak and flexible. It is also not closing the environment out, but designed to give the farmers a needed shelter. This house is located on a quiet road leading to Hampstead Health. Belsize Architects says that "The brief was to form a modern and enjoyable single family home for our client by extending the ground floor and integrating the rear garden with the new interiors. The main architectural interventions to the exterior consisted of a new extension with a terrace above and redesign of the rear elevation to create large openings. Internally, the ground and first floor layouts were remodelled extensively. The ground floor was opened up and connected to the new extension. The rear garden was excavated so as to be at the same level as the ground floor. The kitchen to the front of the house was designed with sliding doors so that it could be separated from the living room when necessary. A large addition to the rear of the ground floor, tilted in plan from the lines of the main house in order to capitalise on the best outlook, was built to create the sitting area in the living room. Structurally the extension was challenging, since it had no column in the corner facing the garden. Two sliding doors meet at the corner with the ceiling above suspended in the air. A large opening, covered in structural glass, was formed over the extension, which lets diffused light into the depth of the living room. The first floor of the house is dedicated to master bedroom, en-suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe as well as a study. Says the architecure "This house is an addition and renovation of an existing bungalow in Fairview Height, near the University of Cincinnati Campus. The prominent feature of the site is a spectacular view of he entire Ohio River Valley from East to West. To capitalize on this condition, a new 2 storey addition was added to the rear of the existing house. The addition maximizes allowable height and area by building above the overhang line of the existing structure. The new construction is clad in shingled, copper panels that will be allowed to patina naturally. New window openings are also framed and clad in copper. The South facade will have an external sun and privacy screen composed of sliding, perforatd copper panels. The enclosed spaces on the first floor are detailed like free standing furniture : The kitchen area is lined in stainless steel and custom cast concrete work surface, while the bathroom is lined with limestone and clad with birdseye maple plywood.".
