Sunday morning we were looking forward to a nice long walk on the beach but typically it was a dreadful morning weather wise, with non-stop rain throughout the day. But low and behold it is now Monday morning, the kids have gone to school and the wife is at work, I have ceilings to paint, and the skies are bluer than blue. It's a lovely spring morning!

There must be a God, or at least a Great Architect of the Sky, and he has a sense of humour. If I were a god and had created the heavens and earth all that time ago I would be getting a little bored of it all by now too, and to pass the time I would tease and annoy my greatest work, humans. 'Got a day off, trying to enjoy it with the family, have some rain. Oh what's the matter, time for everyone to start the working week, let there be sunshine, tee hee'. How the millenia would fly by.

It's a wonderful life!

I feel very lucky to live where I do, although in reality it is a bit of luck and a lot of years of hard work that I now find myself living as I do in the house that we are renovating in Bembridge on the Isle of Wight. But whilst walking down our road to collect my youngest daughter from pre-school I could not help but feel lucky to have such a wonderful life.

It is a fantastically peaceful area and as I walked with a gentle sea breeze in my face the only sounds filling the air was a cacophony of bird song. Birds of all species seemed to be feeling the same as me and were rejoicing in the beauty of their surroundings (and the fact that they had survived another winter and now had a slightly warmer sun on their backs). It was all very calming.

I have travelled the world, seen some amazing sights and worked in some incredible cities over my years and if it were not for a quirk of fate that we find ourselves on the third rock from the sun in the 'Goldie Locks Zone' then nothing of what we know would exist. So in a round-about-way I suppose that I am very lucky to live where I do!

Play-doh, oh why oh!

Play-doh must rate simultaneously as one of the best and worst inventions ever! My youngest daughter and I can play for hours making the 'doh' into different food items that she then 'cooks' in pans from the kitchen, which we then proceed to 'eat'. It is then all rolled back into a ball and the process is repeated, over and over and over.

But, even with the greatest of efforts to keep the 'stuff' on a mat in one area, it somehow manages to end up everywhere. Tiny pieces break off as it drys out and end up all over the carpet, clothes, etc. Grrr.

But she loves the darn stuff, and I am presently eating a black 'doh' pancake, yum.

Did you know though that it was originally invented as a wall paper cleaner by Noah McVicker in Cincinnati, in the 1930's. But Joseph McVicker, the inventors nephew, thought the product to be better suited as a modelling clay for children and was tested in local schools in 1955 subsequently making him a millionaire by 27.

And, although the 'doh' has a wonderful smell, it tastes awful (although being non-toxic). The simplest ideas are the best I guess.

Spring is in the air!

What a lovely weekend we all had. Saturday was a nice relaxed day with just the girls, which was highlighted by an superb long lunch at 'The Met' Tapas bar in Ventnor. We all love Spanish Tapas and my youngest eats olives as if they are sweets, I don't know any other 3 year old that will go any where near olives.

Yesterday was full of the first glimpses of spring, with the birds singing and the flowers blooming. In the morning, with help from the girls, I tidied the garden and lit a roaring bonfire to burn all the garden rubbish. On the return of number one son from his fathers after lunch we all went for an invigorating walk along the beach at Bembridge.

This is the view of the new Lifeboat station from the beach, which is a couple of hundred yards down a private road from our house. It was great fun running along the sand with the kids and when we reached the Ledge we stopped for a flask of tea and took in the gloriously fresh sea air under a surprisingly warm February sun. What a fantastic finish to a splendid half term holiday. Back to school for the kids today though!

How many cherries can one girl eat?

Having had tears in the supermarket this afternoon from my youngest daughter after she had demanded grapes and I had said no, this week we are having cherries (and also plums which were used to make plum crumble), she then proceeded to demolish the whole packet (with a little help from myself) when we got the shopping home.

Whilst I was making the aforementioned crumble she kept creeping up to take aother cherry then running away saying how sneaky she had managed to be. At the end of the attack on the cherries she had managed to get cherry juice on every item of clothing she was wearing, and all over her face. She thought it was great fun and now loves cherries, which were particularly juicy.

It just goes to show that children do not need bags of sweets to convince them that they are getting a treat, and when you look into the health benefits of cherries I could not complain about her thinking it was the greatest game ever to sneak another cherry.

Cherries are high in antioxidants and can help reduce the risks of diabetes and cancer, and have many other benefits too. Isn't nature wonderful to provide us with such treats.

Half way through Half Term

Well we are half way through the half term holiday and all is calm in the family home..... so far, will we make it all the way through without any major upsets. The kids aren't being too annoying, the wife hasn't kicked me out, could life in a blended family be slowly sorting itself out as we all grow/mature together? Maybe, but it is still only half way through the half term holiday, it could all go terribly wrong yet, but fingers crossed eh.

Valentine's Day Tomorrow

I hope all you romantics out there have organised your Valentine Day surprises for tomorrow! But why is the most romantic day of the year in February when it is too cold in the UK to feel very romantic, surely it should be in August? Why was February chosen for the day you send the one you love a card signed '?'.

It is believed the date was chosen to coincide with the pagan festival of Lupercalia, which was deemed unsuitable for their flock by the Church. It involved priests gathering in a cave, where a wolf or 'Lupa' cared for Remus and Romulus, to sacrifice a goat and a dog. The goat skin was then cut into strips dipped in blood and then used to slap local women and crops to boost fertility in the coming spring. The women would then take part in the ancient version of a 'Key Party', having their names drawn from an urn to be paired with single men for the year.

So when sending that card just pause and think how life could have been.

Wot no Touch Screen?

Technological advancement is a unique attribute to the human race (on Earth), and one that has happened at a startling rate. In a relative blink of an eye we have moved from using simple flint tools to exploring the outer reaches of our Galaxy.

And yet as each generation comes along, the technology available at the time is taken for granted. In my lifetime I have seen the introduction of Video Recorders, Compact Discs, Microwave Ovens, Digital Versatile Disc and the video game (I still remember first seeing a friends Atari Pong game from the early '70's). Maybe because I used to be an Engineer contributes to my continuing wonder at each technological breakthrough and the vision of those who develop it (a friend of mine at University in the early '90's was convinced 3D TV was going to be the future and all the electrical stores now stock them as standard).

My three year old daughter got a Leapster Explorer for Christmas which she loves. It has a touch screen which she uses without even thinking. She knows how to look at photos on my touch screen phone, and can not understand when she tries to operate my old laptop by touching the screen and nothing happens. She will grow up in world of gadgetry, some of which will fall by the wayside (she will probably never need to use a VHS or audio cassette), some will transform how she lives her life. Will we be be able to sustain the rate of advancement indefinitely, who knows? Will we be able to use all future technologies for purely peaceful purposes or will we remain an advanced race that is cursed by its violent tendencies?

Despite all the technology at our disposal to entertain and amuse us during our ever increases periods of free time you still can't beat a walk along the beach on a sunny day with the family running around and the air filled with the sound of the sea, nature and children laughing as the play.

Our Perfect Days

What a lovely weekend we all had, but the 'icing on the cake' was Saturday night. We had a family 'Carpet Picnic' and dvd night. The carpet picnic involves all our favourite nibbles on the living room table whist we all sit on the carpet and tuck in.

After the picnic our youngest went to bed and the four of us watched 'Super 8', which was an entertaining alien monster movie for the kids. Once the other two had gone to bed, us grown ups watched 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy' which was heavy going at times but a very well made film, and Gary Oldman was fantastic as 'Smiley'.

But what made the evening great was the discussion the five of us had whilst devouring the picnic. We got around to each taking turns describing our perfect day. Now considering that we are all very different people as a family with vastly varying likes and dislikes, each of our perfect days were our interpretations of days that we have had whilst living here in the lovely village of Bembridge (the largest parish village in the country allegedly).

Living as we do here on our small island off the south coast of England, which is a lovely, safe environment for our children to grow up in, we do sometimes wonder whether we should be joining the rat race on the mainland, it is easy to forget everything we have here. But I think Saturday evening re-confirmed that we seem to be getting if right for all of us here on the wonderful Isle of Wight.

Oh to be 3 again, here is my daughter sporting an unusual choice in hat and scarf combo. The hat is an old unused swimming nappy from when she was a baby that she now uses when playing with her dolls. But not today, today it is a 1920's Flapper hat. You go girl.

p.s. downstairs is over crowded with stuff from upstairs whilst the upstairs ceilings are being worked on, hence all he junk in the back ground.

A soon to be winner in the Facebook Initial Public Offering in the US is graffiti artist David Choe, it has been reported. When he was commissioned by Sean Parker to use his skills in graffiti to jazz up the Facebook offices when it was still in its infancy, David chose to be paid in shares in Facebook rather than cash. He only got a few thousand shares, but it is estimated that his stake will be worth approximately $200 MILLION when his shares hit the stock market! Wow.

As a stay at home dad trying to make a living on the stock market, I could only dream of making those short of returns on an investment.
