Brown Exits Cleveland

Brown led the Cavs to five straight playoff
appearances. Only Lenny Wilkins was able
to match this accomplishment.

It really shouldn't surprise anyone that the Cleveland Cavaliers fired head coach Mike Brown. Whenever a team doesn't live up to expectations (real or too lofty), the coach is the viewed as the scapegoat. Despite becoming the franchise's winningest coach in only five seasons, Brown was served with walking papers.

While Brown leave the Cleveland organization without attaining his goal of winning an NBA Championship, there's no question he could resurface with another team. And he should. He deserves that.

Cavs owner Dan Gilbert's statement on the firing of Brown:

“After a long and deep analysis of all of the factors that led to the disappointing early ends to our playoff runs over the past two seasons, we concluded that it was time for the Cavaliers to move in a different direction. The expectations of this organization are very high and, although change always carries an element of risk, there are times when that risk must be taken in an attempt to break through to new, higher levels of accomplishment. This is one of those times.”

With all the wild speculation surrounding the possible landing places for one LeBron James, does Gilbert think ridding the Cavs of Brown will be an enticement to keep James home? It could be. It might not be. At this point, who knows what's going on in LBJ's noggin.

But Brown shouldn't be the only person in this. Is anyone holding the players accountable for the Cavaliers' early playoff exit?

The finger can be directly pointed at Brown for the lack of playing time for J.J. Hickson. With Big Z returning along with Shaq and Jamison, Hickson's role was substantially diminished, but it shouldn't have been. It was obvious throughout the regular season that Hickson had constructed a bond with LeBron. While some view Hickson as being undersized as a power forward, he still managed to have a great game when his talents were needed.

Hickson was a guy almost every team wanted when the Cavs were looking to make a deal during the regular season. The Cavs scoffed at such. Think about it. That could have halted the prospects of bringing in the likes of Amar'e Stoudemire or Andre Iguodala. So if you're so high on a player, why was his paying time slashed? Only Mike Brown has the exact answer and, with his departure, we may never know.

The finger cannot be pointed to Brown as far as the performance of players such as Jamison, Mo Williams, Delonte West and Anderson Varejao. Jamison averaged 4 points less. Mo averaged 2.5 points less a game. West averaged almost 3 points less. Varejao fell off in both points and boards. Brown cannot be faulted for their lack of production. Only those players can.

Mo was no Robin to LBJ's Batman.

For the second consecutive playoff "run", Williams came up short as the proposed "complimentary" man to LBJ. The whole reason GM Danny Ferry brought in Williams was to be LeBron's "Scottie Pippen". It worked at most times during the regular season, just never in the playoffs. Maybe it's time that experiment should be over, too.

The names being bantered about are John Calipari and Mike Krzyzewski. Calipari's linked to every vacancy the NBA has. Coach K is linked due to his working with LeBron with USA Basketball. Calipari will again state he's staying in Lexington. Coach K will say he has the best coaching gig in the world at Duke.

Regardless of who Gilbert and Ferry decide to bring in, no LBJ, no chance.

"Pacman" a Bengal?

Udpdate: Jones has agreed to a two year deal with the Bengals. Defensive coordinator Mike immer is emphatic that Jones will in no way disrupt the team. We'll see how long that lasts...Stay tuned.

If you believe OCNN (Ochocinco News Network), it's a real possibility that Adam "Pacman" Jones will be a member of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Um, why? Seriously, why on earth would the Bengals even consider this guy? At one time, it was rumored that Pacman was going to the Canadian Football League. Someone got wise and changed plans.

Don't blame them. It's been well documented that where Adam "Pacman" Jones goes, trouble quickly follows. That would be why the NFL has suspended Jones on multiple occasions for breaking the personal conduct policy. He missed the entire 2007 season and the first four games of the 2008 season. Jones was released by the Dallas Cowboys following that 2008 season and has not seen an NFL field as a member of an NFL team since then.

I'm all for second chances, but this guy has had way more than that.

July, 2005 - Assault and felony vandalism at a nightclub.
September, 2005 - Received "police counseling" after an altercation at the Nashville Sports Council Kickoff Luncheon. Also refused to pay for valet services due to having no cash on hand.
October, 2005 - Failed to report the July incident and failure to consistently report to his probation officer in West Virginia.
February, 2006 - Felony and misdemeanor obstruction.
August, 2006 - Disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
October, 2006 - Assault.
February, 2007 - NBA All-Star Game incident at a Vegas strip club.
May, 2007 - Speeding (79 mph in a 55 mph).
June, 2007 - Wanted for questioning in a shooting outside an Atlanta strip club.
October, 2008 - Involved in an incident with a bodyguard.

To say this guy has had a second chance is way beyond absurd. I cannot for the life of me figure out why the Cincinnati organization would want anything to do with Adam "Pacman" Jones. Haven't the Bengals done enough to try and change their reputation over the past handful of years.

And signing this one guy could bring it all tumbling down in a matter of seconds.

C'mon, Mike Brown. Most Bengals fans would rather lose than have this guy on the roster.

LBJ Grabs MVP #2

LeBron's all smiles as he collects his second
NBA MVP. He only needs to snag a title
and the torch could be his.

In a not-so-much-of-a-shocker, Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James was named the NBA's MVP for a second consecutive season. Of the 123 votes, James scored 116 first place votes, 5 second place votes and 2 third place votes.

Oklahoma City Thunder's Kevin Durant was second, L.A. Lakers' Kobe Bryant was third and Orlando Magic big man Dwight Howard was fourth.

A couple of issues here. One with the voting, one not with the voting.

From the voting aspect, how did LBJ get two third place votes? Were those two individuals not paying attention to hoops at all this past season? A few NBA experts have expressed that this should have been an unanimous vote with James as the MVP. I can understand Durant receiving 4 first place votes. He did lead the Thunder to the playoffs. How many people had the Thunder making the postseason? Not many and Durant is the reason why.

Kobe being a close third to Durant is also easy to see. Kobe wasn't the Kobe from seasons past, but he did manage to lead the Lakers to the Western Conference's top seed.

The hard question. Explain to me how Dwight Howard got three first place votes? Yes, he was the Defensive Player of the Year, but to vote him ahead of Durant is a little insane. Those three voters must either be on Stan Van Gundy's personal payroll or they're Orlando Magic beat writers. That's the only logical explanation. After all, SVG has been bucking for his guy as the MVP. And he'll complain all the way about Howard not getting it, too.

During ESPN's interviewing LBJ, Magic Johnson invoked the "passing of the torch" clause, but I'm not sure the torch can be yet. Dr. J to Magic and Bird to MJ to Shaq and Kobe to LBJ.

There's only one thing missing from LBJ's stash...a ring. All the other's Magic mentioned have at least one. When LeBron gets that, then it might be time for that torch to be passed.

But I don't think that Kobe is even considering passing it on quite yet.

Baker's Job in Peril?

Where has it gone wrong for
Baker in Cincinnati?

Could it be time for the Cincinnati Reds to head in a different direction at manager? I'm not so quick to judge as others, but the writing is starting to clear on the wall.

One point that none of us can ignore is the fact that despite sitting at 9-11, the Reds have struggled mightily this season. Since a 5-3 start, the Redlegs are a mere 4-8 since. All faults cannot lie with Baker, but there could be an underground current approaching.

To see a glimpse of Cincy's struggles, you only have to look at the team's stats.

The Reds are 11th in batting average (.244) and slugging (.387), 14th in on-base percentage (.316), 10th in RBI (89), and 7th in home runs (20). I'm not overly concerned with the long ball. I am deeply concerned with the lack of hitting. The two guys looked upon as the leadoff hitters on the club simply aren't producing. Drew Stubbs (.150) and Chris Dickerson (.244) are once again burying the Reds from that spot. Cincy might have been wise to sign Johnny Damon especially when you consider he has a 14 game hitting streak as a member of the Detroit Tigers.

The pitching has been anything but spectacular. 15th in ERA (5.82), 4th in hits allowed (194. San Francisco has allowed the fewest with 141), 6th in walks (77. Houston has issued the fewest passes with 53), the most hit batters (14), T4th in HR allowed (24) and T2nd in total runs allowed (118). Sure, Aaron Harang had a nice outing last night, but I believe it is safe to assume that the Aaron Harang of 2010 is far from the Aaron Harang of 2006 and 2007. In fact, Harang had the highest ERA of any starter entering last night's game. Now, that label belongs to Bronson Arroyo. The vaunted Reds bullpen of '09 is non-existent in '10. Nick Masset has struggled in almost every outing and he was the bridge to get to Francisco Cordero.

I know Baker doesn't hit and he doesn't pitch, but he is accountable on a lot of levels. Maybe Baker's time in the Queen City has already run its course.

Draft Quickly Approaching

Less than six hours until the NFL Draft kicks off and many mock drafts have changed overnight. With that in mind, let's re-examine the Browns and Bengals first round possibilities.

Cleveland goes at #7. At first, I thought Joe Haden, the corner from Florida, would be the pick. After a poor showing at the combine, the Browns seemed to lose a bit of interest. Then, the rumblings of safety Eric Berry "falling" to them at the spot surfaced. It looks like Kansas City is saying he's theirs at #5. There's been a half a dozen other names out there.

Is Morgan the right pick at #7?

If we look at the Browns primary needs, it's defensive secondary and receiver. Most Browns fans want the defense shored up. Berry is still a legit shot if KC passes and the Seattle Seahawks pass on him at #6. Here's the three most prominent names I'm now seeing: Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State; Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech; and C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson. If you eliminate the offensive players, it's Morgan.

There's no other defensive secondary player worth really going after at #7 other than Berry. Going for the Texas safety Earl Thomas at #7 may be a slight stretch, too. Could Mike Holmgren trade out of the slot? Not seeing it because there are still impact players on the board from both sides of the ball and that's why I like the Morgan selection.

The Browns are rumored to be enamored with Colt McCoy at #38. There still may be a decent receiver available at #71. Don't rule out the Browns trading to the back end of the first round to snare McCoy either.

The Bengals have given zero indication which direction they're going this year. Does Mike Brown ever let anyone in on his thinking? No question that Carson Palmer needs more weapons even with the signings of Antonio Bryant and Matt Jones. Some are saying they need yet another receiver. Other are thinking tight end. Cincinnati doesn't always draft on needs in the early rounds. They have been known for going after talent first.

Bryant's impact in Cincy
would be immediate.

So, if Dez Bryant is available at #21, would Cincy take him? Yes. Sometimes another receiving threat is better than a tight end. Despite the fact that Oklahoma's Jermaine Gresham will be there at #21. Don't forget USC safety Taylor Mays. I know the Bengals have done so much on drafting on the defensive side since Marvin Lewis' arrival in the Queen City, but the guys in stripes did possess one of the NFL's best defenses last season. Mays is an immediate upgrade at safety and starts from day one.

Bryant, Gresham, Mays: who ya' got?

I like Bryant, that's Dez Bryant. If the best receiver in the draft falls to Cincy at #21, it could be the steal of the first round. Kind of like the Bengals stealing Rey Maualuga in the second round last year.

Volquez Suspended for 50 Games

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez is already out due to Tommy John surgery last year. Good thing because he has been slapped with a 50 game suspension for violating MLB's drug policy.

Volquez tested positive for banned substance that is listed as a possible masking agent for PEDs. Here is the statement Volquez released:

“Prior to the conclusion of last season, my wife and I sought medical advice in Cincinnati with the hope of starting a family. As part of my consultation with the physician, I received certain prescribed medications to treat my condition. As a follow up to our original consultation, my wife and I visited another physician in our home city in the Dominican Republic this past off-season. This physician also gave me certain prescribed medications as part of my treatment. Unfortunately, I now know that the medication the physician in the Dominican gave me is one that is often used to treat my condition, but is also a banned substance under Major League Baseball’s drug policy. As a result, I tested positive when I reported to spring training.

“Although I understand that I must accept responsibility for this mistake and have chosen not to challenge my suspension, I want to assure everyone that this was an isolated incident involving my genuine effort to treat a common medical issue and start a family. I was not trying in any way to gain an advantage in my baseball career. I am embarrassed by this whole situation and apologize to my family, friends, fans, teammates, and the entire Reds Organization for being a distraction and for causing them any difficulty. I simply want to accept the consequences, learn from the mistake, and continue to strive to be the best person and baseball player I can be.”

This has no bearing on the Reds current pitching configuration since Volquez is still recovering from his surgery. It only has an effect on Volquez's pocket as he will lose about $125,000.

Did anyone in the majors learn anything from Manny Ramirez? Obviously not or this would have never happened. And Volquez should be embarrassed. Just like the NFL, the list of banned substances can easily be obtained by its players. They are responsible for at least checking that list if they have been prescribed any type of medication.

With all the recent "transgressions" in sports lately, you have to wonder if any athlete truly "gets it".

Cavs Healthy and Rested for Playoffs

A lot of NBA pundits feel the Cleveland Cavaliers will sleepwalk through their first series versus the Chicago Bulls. I'm inclined to agree.

Brown gets little credit in
recent Cavs success.

Cleveland (61-21)
Sure the Cavs dropped their last four games, but many starters sat most if not all of those games. Funny thing, the "starters" were more than competitive in three of those four games.

With a rested and healthy LeBron James, Cleveland will see to it that this series is a short one. With no clear disadvantage at any position, the Cavs should sweep or go to no more than 5 games.

I don't expect to see a ton of Shaq in this series, but he will play and he will log a few minutes. Mike Brown needs to reintegrate O'Neal back into the starters role for upcoming series. This round will provide an opportunity for Shaq to get back into game shape.

Knocking the rust off of the starters will be the most pressing concern.

In this round, keep an eye on the number of minutes J.J. Hickson plays. Hickson and LeBron have formed a bond on the court. If Hickson gets major minutes, he's a double-double threat and that would give future opponents just one more weapon to think about defending.

Will confrontation between
coach and GM affect Bulls?

Chicago (41-41)
The Bulls had to overcome losing 10 straight games with a 10-4 finish just to make the playoffs. Now, reports of a shoving match between GM John Paxson and head coach Vinny Del Negro have overshadowed what a great run Chicago made just to get in the postseason.

But as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. Making the playoffs is always a goal, but getting the Cavs isn't.

The Bulls are outmatched here, but I anticipate Derrick Rose to elevate his game. During that 10-4 run, Rose averaged over 25 points a game. The Bulls need Joakim Noah and Luol Dang to elevate their games, too. And that's just to stay close.

Too many weapons on the Cavs side of the ledger here. The Bulls are a couple of players away from having a significant presence in the playoffs.

LBJ and Shaq to Sit Finale to Rest for Playoffs

How ready will LeBron be? Silly question.

Tonight is the regular season finale for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Would you be surprised if I said LBJ and Shaq are sitting this one out?

No one would. While we have seen in other sports that sitting starters presents both good and bad (and I have identified such), the prevailing thought is always team health. A refreshed and healthy LeBron paired with a refreshed and healthy Shaq will be the cog for a Cavs NBA Championship.

Granted, it took a while before the Cavs' chemistry all turned to the same page during the regular season. Shaq was really gelling with his new team when him thumb injury occurred.

Mike Brown could give O'Neal a reason to repeat his "Master of Panic" line aimed at Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy, but Brown, like his team, has matured this season.

In the past couple of seasons, it was always LBJ with the ball with the game on the line. You want your stud player in that role. That's why he gets the big money, but James has been deferring more as of late. That's a good thing. It shows Brown and LeBron what they have and who they can count on if James is ever taken out of a play. It can happen.

A healthy Shaq bodes well for Cavs'
playoff hopes.

And it loops back to Shaq. He was brought in to negate one Dwight Howard. Don't discount a potential match up with an aging Celtics squad either. O'Neal could prove to be a valuable commodity there if the C's pull off an upset in the second round against Orlando. That's if Boston can slide by either the Milwaukee Bucks or Miami Heat in their first round series.

With Shaq rested and healthy for the postseason, the road should be less bumpy than it was last season.

LeBron Resting Again

Let me get this straight. Mike Brown is once again resting LeBron James for today's game. I don't usually like resting players (in any sport) because it could cause a tendency to lessen their edge.

Resting Antawn Jamison due to injury is completely understandable. Same goes for Boobie Gibson. And resting LeBron because you want him fresh for the playoffs, but I still wonder of rust could set in on even the league's best all-around player. Sitting out Thursday's game at Chicago or Friday's home game against Indiana could be in order. Sitting a third straight game is a bit strange, in a way, but LeBron is different. No one wants a title more then he does and delivering one to Cleveland is one of his goals. By the way, the Orlando Magic is sitting Vince Carter.

So much for ABC's big matchup today. No LBJ and no Vinsanity will make this a boring game regardless of the outcome or the circumstances on how it could possibly end.

With Jamison, Shaq, LBJ and Gibson rested, the Cavs are sending a strong signal to the NBA that they will be full strength come the playoffs. With already claiming the Central Division, the Eastern Conference and home court advantage thoughout the playoffs, the road will once again go through Cleveland and The Q.

Now, no one had better mess with the GPS.

What Will #7 Hold for Cleveland?

Will Berry be a trick or a treat for Cleveland?

So I'm checking out a lot of mock drafts since the real NFL draft is a mere 13 days away. Some time ago, Joe Haden, the cornerfrom Florida, was the most likely selecton for the Cleveland Browns at #7. Since the combine and Florida's Pro Day, the feelings are that Haden doesn't have the speed and is falling a bit on a lot of boards.

But that has opened up to the possibility of the Browns possibly seeing a guy at that #7 slot they never thought they would see...safety Eric Berry from Tennessee. All four mock drafts at cbssports.com and WalterFootball.com have the Browns getting Berry at #7, so why not?

Maybe because the Kansas City Chiefs are likely to snag him at #5. Questions have been raised about taking a safety that early. In 2004, the Washington Redskins drafted a safety at #5 and he was pretty good. That guy was the late Sean Taylor, a two-time Pro Bowler and Berry possesses a similar frame to Taylor's. I don't think the Chiefs can pass on that kind of talent. The Chiefs need help everywhere except quarterback and running back.

If KC passes on Berry, Mike Holmgren's old stomping grounds of Seattle will take him at #6. There's speculation the Berry can be converted into a corner due to his speed. The Seahawks need a corner and a safety...and an offensive tackle.

So what's that leave the Browns at #7?

OK, if, and it's a big "if", KC and Seattle pass on Eric Berry, it's obvious he's your guy. Here's a few other guys to think about.

Jason Pierre-Paul, DE/OLB, USF - If Cleveland takes Paul, he wold likley be that rush outside linebacker that Cleveland so desparately needs. Comparisons to DeMarcus Ware have been made. Going at #7 may be a reach.
Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State - The Browns do not have a legit #1 receiver and Bryant could fill that void. The Browns passed on Michael Crabtree last year due to his attitude, so taking Bryant could be a stretch, but no one doubts his talent.
Earl Thomas, S, Texas - May be too early to take Thomas, but people said Holmgren made a big reach in drafting Lofa Tatupu when he was in Seattle. How'd that work out? Also, talk is generating that Thomas could be converted to corner like Berry, but Thomas needs work on his technique. Still, Thomas is a talent to consider.
Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma- With Russell Okung off the board to Washington at #4, Williams is the next best tackle available. Can never have too many good O-lineman.
Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame - Holmgren's not a Clausen fan...or does he want you to think that. Clausen looked wonderful during his Pro Day even though Clausen admitted his surgically repaired toe was only at about "75 to 80 percent". Even with the new combo of Delhomme and Wallace in town, don't totally rule this out.
Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech - Like Pierre-Paul, Morgan has the speed to be a rush outside linebacker, but will most likely stay at end. Morgan never missed a game during his tenure at Georgia Tech, so durability isn't an issue. Morgan can play with his hand in the dirt and taking him at #7 isn't a reach since a few mock drafts have him going to Seattle at #6.
Joe Haden, CB, Florida - Despite his poor 40 time, he's still in the mix...just not as much as he was before the combine.
C. J. Spiller, RB, Clemson - I know, I know. The Browns need defense and Spiller's not a DB. Hear me out. Spiller is without a doubt the best athlete in the draft. He can catch the ball either out of the backfield or in the slot or lined up wide. He's as versatile as Percy Harvin, maybe even a tad more. Spiller can turn over a field in less that 5 seconds. A bonus here, if the Browns decide to convert Joshua Cribbs to a "full-time" wideout, Spiller is just as dangerous in the return game.

So Mike Holmgren has numerous options. One theory is that if Berry isn't available, the Browns should try to trade down and get another pick or two out of the deal. That's a good theory as the Browns are (unfortunately) in a rebuiling mode and having more picks can lead to a quicker rebuilding process.

Problem is will there be any takers?

Cards Hurler Complains

Funny how Chris Carpenter gave up two home runs on opening day, still got the win and proceeded to complain about the balls used. Aaron Harang and Reds skipper Dusty Baker aren't buying it. Here's Harang's short but sweet comment.

“I’ve never had a problem. You make do with what they give you.”

What makes his complaining funnier is a mildly entertaining stream of thought.

First, we saw this just last season from former Cards pitcher John Smoltz. He had major issues with the baseballs at GABP during a game last season. Did Smoltz stop to think that maybe, just maybe, he would be a tad better off working on his golf game and practice his Hall of Fame speech? Where could this all be coming from? Hmm.

Second, we are talking about a team led by the master of mind games in Tony LaRussa. It is not beyond him to work and pick at any and every advantage he can muster to gain the W. Sportsmanship should be his middle name.

Finally, as Harang told us, he had to use the same baseballs as Carpenter. Plus, Carpenter's line for the game: 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 K. Both runs were on homers (Votto and Rolen) and that's the main reason Carpenter is probably spouting off. He only surrendered 7 last season.

But as Dusty Baker states:

“I don’t pay any attention to that,” Baker said. “He threw pretty good. I hate to see how he’d throw if he had balls that weren’t slippery.”

The Cards won. Can't they leave it at that?

What a Way to Launch

Did you shudder when you saw this yesterday? Part of me did and I'm a bit peeved about it, too.

This not only was the main pic on the newly launched ESPNNewYork.com, it was the same on the main website. All to get people to the New York version. Like we Knicks.

So, let's examine this, shall we?

Why is New York the obvious choice? Um, it's not. LeBron has nothing to gain in going there. The roster, in its current state, isn't as good as it is in Cleveland and it won't be next season despite the fact Donnie Walsh and Company have a ton of cap room to lure LeBron and maybe even Dwayne Wade or Chris Bosh to the Big Apple. King James will most likely garner a max contract no matter where he goes. It will dependent on one thing...the roster.

You do have that oddity of what the Boston Celtics did a couple of years ago by acquiring Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Maybe that's what Walsh and the Knicks are banking on. LeBron will see that you can get that title "overnight". I don't see it, though. The Knicks currently do not have a player like the C's did with Paul Pierce. Something was already in Boston.

So, if there's no chance for a championship next season, what else can the Knicks offer? Outside of the city life, nothing. Even then, I'm not so sure. LBJ is "the man" in Cleveland. He will be as long as he stays there, too. He won't have that in New York even with all his current fame. That title rests with Derek Jeter. LeBron has no need to play second to anyone, even Jeter.

Granted, there is a certain appeal to playing in New York and winning a championship for the city. That would be the only draw for LeBron. He has almost everything he needs in Cleveland.

And there's a good chance he'll add that championship, too. That's his goal.

Rogers Caught Packing

Update: Rogers has entered a plea of not guilty. A few have questioned if Rogers is secure with his roster spot upon his forgetfulness. It'll be interesting to see how both the Browns andhe NFL handle this given the recent number of gun related incidents.

Not again.

Another athlete, another gun. This time it's Cleveland Browns nose tackle Shaun Rogers. Rogers was booked for carrying a concealed weapon as he attempted to board an airplane at Hopkins International. The offense is considered a third degree felony and carries anywhere from probation to a five year prison sentence. The Browns and Mike Holmgren currently have no comment on the matter.

Is it possible that Rogers doesn't pay attention to the news. Does the name Gilbert Arenas sound familiar? Or is it that Rogers has become extremely lackadaisical in carrying the firearm? Doesn't that also include keeping track of were said firearm is at all times?

Some reports suggest that Rogers forgot the gun was even in his carry-on. I have zero, repeat, zero problem with individuals carrying firearms legally, but it those like Rogers that place those rights in peril when they make this sort of claim. The anti-gun movement will surely take this and run with it because Rogers' actions were moronic and irresponsible. How do you forget you are in possession of a firearm? And it's loaded, too?

A poll on cleveland.com suggests that the Browns wait out the legal process. No only will Rogers most likely have at least one date in court, he will also have a date with the commish.

That meeting with Roger Goodell will be less pleasant, I can assure you.

The real need is at leadoff. That could have been addressed if the Reds had gone after Johnny Damon, but with the signing of Aroldis Chapman (I still like the move), the money simply wasn't there. Dickerson has shown he can, but only for a short time. The same applies to Stubbs. The rest is as solid as Baker could ask, but with an asterisk. If you want power, Gomes has to be the man in left. If not, then it's Dickerson.

Indians Prep an Opening Day Lineup

Tribe manager Manny Acta submitted a lineup card yesterday that could resemble the Opening Day starters.

With less than 11 days left until the season opener, Acta appears to already have his regular season hat on. This lineup helped produce a 3-1 win over Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners, a team a lot of pundits are stating will make a big splash in 2010. It is only one game, but the results were positive.

One thing to remember about this lineup is availability of Russell Branyan. If Branyan can give it a go for the opener, look for Branyan at first and put LaPorta in left field. Brantley then becomes the fourth outfielder. I would also suspect that Branyan may hit 6th only because you would eliminate back-to-back lefties in the lineup. LaPorta could move down to 7th or even up to 5th. I don't think you can take Hafner out of the cleanup spot.

Three of the starter jobs have been filled. Jake Westbrook, Fausto Carmona and Justin Masterson appear to be 1-3. It's the 4 and 5 spots that are yet to be determined. Mitch Talbot, David Huff, Aaron Laffey and Carlos Carrasco are in the mix. Acta and pitching coach Tim Belcher have their work cut out for them. All have performed well enough in Goodyear, Arizona to warrant a starter's role. Talbot is the front runner for the #4 job with a sterling 0.79 ERA in 4 outings during the spring. Huff and Laffey haven't been as good as hoped, but both pitched well against the Mariners. Carrasco has been the surprise. Two straight dominating outings have placed him well within the discussion.

One name absent among the four vying for a starters role is that of Jeremy Sowers. He has battled soreness in his shoulder. He could start the season on the DL or in AAA depending on his situation after camp breaks.

Big Z Returns

Update: Ilgauskas' line from his first game: 17 minutes, 1 point, 3 boards and 2 assists. According to InsideHoops, the Milwaukee Bucks were awarded a waiver claim on Darnell Jackson.

Surprised? I knew you weren't.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas is once again a memeber of the Cleveland Cavaliers. He will test the free agent market after this season.

While coming back to Cleveland pleases a lot of Cavs fans, it pleases no one more than Anderson Varejao.

"It was like when I go back home and see my mom and my dad. It was great to see him this morning."

That would be a vote "for".

Don't expect too much, too soon. Ilgauskas mayy have been staying in shape, but unless your on the court, game shape will take some time. Mike Brown will have to slowly integrate Big Z into the team's player rotation. Throwing him back in too early would stunt the Cavs chances at the ultimate prize, the NBA Championship.

While Big Z was in Cleveland before the Jamison trade, I liked the rotation where Shaq and Big Z were out together. The lane was "safe". With a healthy Shaq, Big Z, Varejao, Jamison and LeBron, rebounds should surely increase on bothe the offensive and defensive glass. Obviously, that rotation can't be used against quicker teams and/or quicker lineups.

To make room on the roster, the Cavs released Darnell Jackson.

One last thing. Welcome back, Big Z. The Cavs need you.

Now Chad Wants a Date

So much for Chad Ochocinco getting to play Robin to T.O.'s Batman. Instead, Chad will be playing a different role and in search of something else...a potential mate.

VH1 has announced that the Bengals charismatic wide receiver will be the subject of a reality show with the working title of The Tournament. The setup for the show will be that Chad will travel the U.S. and will select 85 women that may have an interest in the All-Pro. Taping is due to commence in July.

Now, I doubt that Carson Palmer will tune in to see what strides Ochocino is making on the dating front like he says he will for Dancing with the Stars. I know Bengals fans want him to emerge as the victor on DWTS. He's got Cheryl Burke as his partner. Burke teamed with Drew Lachey (born in Cincy and brother Of Nick) and won the second season. The following season, Burke was paired with Emmitt Smith and won again.

And that brings about an interesting question. With DWTS and his new gig, how will Chad find time to be ready for training camp?

No doubt Chad will be ready. He keeps himself in great shape.

I also ask this: How much of Chad Ochocino is enough?

Some already think it's too much.

Giving Back to the Organization

The Cincinnati Reds are reaching back to give their current roster a taste of what used to be.

Most teams do that. They bring in former players to help the young talent. It almost gives them a sense of a team's history as well as provide the guys with a bit of instruction.

Barry Larkin and Sean Casey are two of such former Reds that are doing that. Larkin and Casey have been added as "instructors" for spring training. It's a bit unclear on what Casey will be doing. My guess is that it will have something to do with hitting. Larkin's role isn't defined either, but he will be in Arizona for 10 days as a "roving instructor". He could tell the guys about winning an MVP.

Larkin said he was contacted by both Reds manager Dusty Baker and GM Walt Jocketty about the assignment. Larkin was ready to don the "C" again.

“They asked me to come back,” Larkin said. “It’s great. I’ve often thought about it. It’s time and it’s good...”

“...I have so many Reds uniforms at home,” Larkin said. ”I was looking at them before I came out here. I remember when I retired, I had a Nationals uniform with No. 11 – before Ryan Zimmerman was 11 – I couldn’t put it on. It will be very comfortable putting the Reds uniform on.”

Yes, it's great to have #11 back...in a Reds uniform.

Anderson Rants and Recants

The Cleveland Browns released quarterback Derek Anderson soon after trading for Seneca Wallace. A move that should surprise nobody. Including Derek Anderson, but it probably did.

Anderson proceeded to release as what could be termed as a statement through the Willoughby News-Herald aimed at Browns fans.

"The fans are ruthless and don't deserve a winner," Anderson said in the e-mail Tuesday. "I will never forget getting cheered when I was injured.

"I know at times I wasn't great. I hope and pray I'm playing when my team comes to town and [we] roll them."

Anderson then took some time to think about his "statement" made to Jeff Schudel and reconsidered his position.

“I said some things to (The News-Herald's) Jeff Schudel earlier that I regret. Those of you who got to know me personally from covering the Browns over the past five years, know this was out of character for me. I wasn’t taken out of context, but I was speaking out of my frustration after my career with the Browns came to a close.

“I had some great times playing in Cleveland, especially during the 2007 season and I met some great people and made many lifelong friends along the way. I’m looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life.”

The main reason D.A. was released was not because of the cluster of QBs on the Browns roster. It was because he was basically a one-year wonder. After replacing Charlie Frye in 2007, Anderson led the Browns to a 10-6 record (10-5 as a starter) and went on to be selected as a first alternate in the Pro Bowl. The Browns regime at that time feared that Anderson would leave for a bigger contract and offered him a new deal to stay in Cleveland. He stayed despite the fact that the Browns had selected the "home grown" Brady Quinn in the 2007 draft.

That move placed D.A. squarely behind the 8-ball and he failed to recover and produce. You could also say Anderson may have painted himself into a corner. Too much dough for too little results. That's why Anderson is no longer in Cleveland. No other reason.

Something I learned some time back is that people make their true feelings known when under some form of distress. It was clearly a period of distress for Anderson not only because he was out of a job, he was also out a ton of bucks.

I understand frustration, but to say that Cleveland doesn't deserve a winner? No pass being granted.

A couple of interesting notes here. Anderson is set to visit Seattle on Thursday and Arizona on Friday. Meanwhile, don't write in Brady Quinn's name as the Browns starting QB. ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that the Browns are also shopping Quinn. New regimes almost always translate to major roster moves.

The Deal for Wallace

Mike Holmgren goes to his former stomping grounds to acquire Seattle quarterback Seneca Wallace. Wallace will most likely serve as a backup, but he can start if the situation warrants. And he's done that over the last couple of seasons.

What's the deal do for Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson? The answer may be a little too obvious.

It most likely ends the days of Derek Anderson is a Browns uniform. Anderson is set to receive a reported $2 million roster bonus and a $10 million salary. The only thing that would keep Anderson in Cleveland would be a severe restructuring of his contract. That would also mean a severe decrease in salary. A major stretch. Since there is little to no trade value for Anderson (mostly no value), an outright release is in the cards.

If D.A. is released, this would certainly make Brady Quinn as the #1 QB with Wallace at #2. There have been questions surfacing on what Holmgren will do with the #7 overall pick. QB or defense. This move may sway the Browns to the defensive side of the ball.

The draft you ask? I think it will be a defensive player although Cleveland could also use a wide receiver. Dez Bryant? It's not a given that a receiver taken that early will pan out. (See Oakland Raiders and Darrius Heyward-Bey). You could still get value at receiver in the second round and even beyond.

Florida corner Joe Haden still is a likely pick, but in some mock drafts, I'm seeing Tennessee safety Eric Berry's name popping up a lot more. That might be due to Haden's poor performance in the 40 at the combine. I'll wait to get the results of the pro days and individual workouts. Haden is still rated as the top corner in the draft.

Browns and Bengals and Free Agency

Update: According to Joe Reedy of Cincinnati.com, the Bengals are in the process of signing former Buccaneers wide receiver Antonio Bryant. The deal is reportedly for 4 years and $28 million. I wonder how this will set with Ochocinco.

After the first weekend of the NFL's free agency period, the Cleveland Browns did manage a couple of signings.

Super Bowl champ Scott Fujita leaves the bayou for the Browns. Adding Fujita was a move the Browns needed. With both D'Qwell Jackson and Jason Trusnick as restricted free agents, bringing in the veteran was a smart ploy. A need for an inside linebacker was a big hole to fill. By getting Fulita, he also has the leadership aspect as an added bonus.

A move I find a bit mysterious is that of offensive tackle Tony Pashos. Pashos was a member of the San Francisco 49ers last season but only played in five games with only one start. He was eventually placed on IR due to a fractured scapula. Cleveland did need to find a tackle to work on the other side of the line from Pro-Bowler Joe Thomas. Pashos might be that guy if his health holds. Even if the signing doesn't work, the Browns would not have spent a lot of money. It's a bit of a gamble, but a small one.

Cleveland has also been linked to interest in Saints running back Mike Bell.

The Cincinnati Bengals have been in hiding, but that should be of no surprise. Cincy did sign Laverneous Coles during last year's free agency period. We see how that ended.

Two of the Bengals biggest needs are receiver and tight end. Quarterback Carson Palmer needs more than just Chad Ochocinco in the passing game. The Bengals have reached out to Terrell Owens and Antonio Bryant. Late yesterday, the name of Brandon Marshall surfaced. T.O. and Bryant are unrestricted free agents while Marshall is a restricted free agent. If the Bengals get Marshall, then you would have to send the #21 overall pick to Denver as compensation.

It boils down to this:

sign Owens to a one-year deal and see how he works as a #2 WR.
sign Bryant (another one-year deal) and hope his knee issues are okay.
sign Marshall to an offer sheet, get him and send that 21st overall pick to Denver.
draft a WR with that 21st pick and hope a big WR (like Arrelious Benn) is available.

The tight end position is a different matter. There is not a legitimate #1 tight end available as a restricted free agent. That's also a position are looking at with the 21st pick. A name I'm seeing a lot of, if Cincy goes tight end with the pick, is Jermaine Grisham from Okalahoma.

If the Bengals land T.O. or Bryant, look for the Grisham selection with the 21st pick. I say that with a bit of caution. I see no way they pass on Benn if he's there. It would give Benn time to adjust to the NFL level. If an offensive lineman that his highly graded is still there, the Bengals could choose that option, too.

If the Bengals were to nab Marshall, the pick is gone to Denver, but Cincinnati would get a top 5 receiver.

That ball is squarely in Mike Brown's court.

GABP to See an All-Star Game?

It's a logical question. That's one of many reason new stadiums are built.

John Fay of Cincinnati.Com and the Cincinnati Enquirer is reporting that MLB Commish Bud Selig says the city deserves the extravaganza. Selig was in Goodyear, Arizona today taking a tour of the new Reds facilities. Selig was impressed with the tour. While on the tour, Castellini brought up the potential for an All-Star Game at Great American Ball Park. Selig's take.

“This is remarkable, absolutely amazing. Bob Castellini (Reds owner) took me on a tour. I think it’s a testament to all the people involved and a testament to baseball’s great popularity.”

The next three are spoken for. This year, Anaheim and the Angels play host. In 2011, the Arizona Diamondbacks will be the site. 2012 will see the Kansas City Royals roll out the red carpet for baseball's best. Citi Field in New York (Mets) appears to be the fave for 2013. If the league rotation rule stays in line, an American League city would get the nod for 2014. That would put the next possible year Cincinnati would host the All-Star Game is 2015.

“Cincinnati deserves one and we’ll work on it.”

Cincinnati last hosted the All-Star Game in 1988 at Riverfront Stadium. In that contest, the American League won 2-1 and Oakland A's catcher Terry Steinbach was the MVP.

Chad May Get His Wish

Update: Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for T.O. said on Sirius NFL Radio that there is a dialogue between he, Owens and the Bengals. Cincinnati is also interested in Antonio Bryant and Chris Chambers. The Miami Dolphins are the front runners to land Bryant and Chambers is not as fleet as Owens. With Kevin Walter and Nate Burleson signed by other teams, the chances of T.O. coming to Cincy are increasing.

Nate Burleson to Detroit. Antonio Bryant to Miami (most likely). Kevin Walter to Baltimore (possibly). Just some of the receivers the Bengals were interested in have signed with other teams or are most likely to sign with other teams and not the Bengals. Which once again brings the rumor, will the Bengals now become active in the pursuit of one Terrell Owens?

We all know Chad Ochocinco would like that. But Chad would miss the presser because of the rehearsals for DWTS.

The bigger question is this: Could T.O. fit in Cincy?

I'm not so sure. Sure, there's a spot open with the release of Laverneus Coles...at the #2 WR slot, and I'm not so sure T.O. would accept such a role. I don't believe he's #1 any longer, but Owens can still contribute a lot to the right roster.

Getting Owens could actually be good for the Bengals. Of course, there's the possiblility of an outburst, but we didn't see that out of T.O. last season despite the Bills struggles. Last season may have been the humbling experience he needed. Signing T.O. would be an immediate upgrade at the receiver position, even if it's just for one season.

The big negative is T.O's age. He's 36. But, Owens did manage over 800 yards with 5 TD with the likes of Trent Edwards and Ryan Fitzpatrick as his QB. By contrast, Coles had only 514 yards in his only season in stripes and said he never felt comfortable in the Begals offense. Coles indirectly make a good case for the Bengals to look T.O's way.

"He likes tall receivers. He told the coaches he wasn't comfortable throwing to me.''

Tall receivers, huh? Coles goes 5' 11". Owens is 6' 3". Just for the record, Chad is 6' 1".

We all know that with Owens and Ochocinco on the same roster there would never be a dull moment...as long as the Bengals were winning.

Chad to dance

Ochocinco is at it again.

The self promoting wide receiver of the Cincinnati Bengals will be a contestant on the next season of Dancing with the Stars.

Marvin Lewis was recently asked about Chad's participation.

"...let’s just say I hope he wins the whole thing. Like Carson already said, we’ll have Bengals football players watching a dancing show like never before."

I wonder if this move will come in handy.

Shaq on the mend

Today, Shaquille O'Neal had surgery today to repair a torn ligament in the thumb of his shooting hand. He will miss 6-8 weeks bringing an end to the regular season for the Big Shaquisition. Missing the first round of the playoffs is not out of the scope either.

So, Danny Ferry, what now? Bring in a free agent? Make do with your current roster? Darnell Jackson was recalled from Erie on Feb. 26, but that was viewed more as a stop-gap until the Cavs could bring back Zydrunas Ilgauskus. That can't happen until March 22.

The most likely of scenarios is a rotation involving Anderson Varejao, J.J. Hickson and maybe even Darnell Jackson. Even if Shaq isn't back until the second round of the playoffs, I don't think it'll slow down the Cavs. It will actually speed them up as LeBron and Co. will look to push the ball more.

The injury is big, but it's not devastating. Once again, Mike Brown will have to discover a combination that will work for the Cavs. He had to do it when Big Z was sent to Washington and acquired Antawn Jamison. He has to do it when both Mo Williams and Delonte West were down with injuries as well.

Don't be too surprised with a loss sprinkled in here and there over the next couple of weeks (just like after the Jamison deal) as the Cavs try to once again deal with the injury. Home court should be of concern as the Los Angeles Lakers are only one game behind the Cavs in the NBA's overall standings.

Cleveland is still the team to beat in the East.
