Pirates of the Caribbean is a sweeping action-adventure story set in an era when villainous pirates scavenged the Caribbean seas. The film concerns three women each suffering from depression. Virginia Woolf is starting to write her book 'Mrs. Dalloway' in 1923 England. She is coming to the realization of her lesbianism and fighting her pure despair of life and headaches. Virginia receives a visit from her sister Vanessa and Vanessa's two sons and daughter. The daughter places a strong influence on Virginia's emotions through the death of a bird. Eventually, Virgnia must face the decision to run away to London, stay with her beloved husband, or move to London where the doctors forbid her to go. Laura Brown, is a mother fearing her ability to be a mother again. She is reading 'Mrs. Dalloway' in 1951 Los Angeles. Laura is trying to throw a wonderful birthday party for her husband. The very pregnant Laura thinks she won't be an adequate mother to her son and current baby on the way in a few months. Laura must make the decision to run away from it all or live miserably with her happy husband. Clarissa Vaughan is a career publisher living in present 2001 New York. Her nickname, given by her poet-friend, Richard, who is dying of AIDS, is Mrs. Dalloway. Clarissa is also throwing a party but for Richard who is receiving an award for his poetry. Like Virginia Woolf, Clarissa is also a lesbian but also wonders if she is in love with Richard with whom she once dated. At the end, the whole plot twists and comes together. The basic theme of the film is wondering if it is better to live your life for your own happiness or others.

Phone Booth (2002)

A fiendish publicist finds himself being held hostage in a phone booth by an extreme moralist who watches his victim's every move through the scope of his high-power sniper rifle, while speaking to the publicist via the phone booth. The caller prides himself on using force to punish corrupt people by forcing them to admit all of their lies and sins through mental games, or killing them. At the same time, he eliminates other people as well; everyday people who are guilty of brutal dishonesty and/or corruption, such as a murderous street pimp and a pushy pizza man (all of which, if you look hard enough in the film, have a guilt link). The caller himself is corrupt, and uses it defeat other corruption. It is evil fighting evil in the phone booth.

Michael Sullivan, Sr. is an enforcer to John Rooney, an Irish American organized crime boss in Illinois during the Great Depression. Sullivan, an orphan raised by Rooney, has worked for the crime boss most of his life. Sullivan and Rooney's son, Connor, are sent by Rooney to talk to Finn McGovern, a disgruntled employee. Sullivan's son, twelve-year-old Michael Sullivan, Jr., follows the enforcers, witnesses Connor's impulsive killing of McGovern, and stumbles into discovery by Connor and his father. Although Sullivan swears his son to secrecy, Connor tries to seal the secret with a failed attempt to kill Sullivan, while murdering Sullivan's wife, Annie, and the younger son, Peter. Sullivan and his son Michael escape the attack and flee to Chicago.

Sullivan requests assistance from Al Capone's crime syndicate to seek revenge, but when he is rejected, Sullivan and his son plan a string of robberies to steal the syndicate's laundered money. Sullivan hopes to coerce Capone into giving up Connor for the money, but Capone instead dispatches assassin Harlen Maguire to kill Sullivan and his son. Maguire sets up a trap for Sullivan with the aid of Rooney's accountant, Alexander Rance. Sullivan arrives at Rance's hotel room, seeking assistance, and Rance stalls him long enough for Maguire to appear. Rance is killed in the crossfire of the ensuing gunfight, but Sullivan escapes, however he is shot in the arm. Maguire receives a superficial wound to his face, where debris is embedded down one side of his head, but he survives. Sullivan's son takes his father to a farm where a childless and elderly couple helps the former enforcer recover. During his recuperation, Sullivan finds in ledgers taken from Rance that Connor had embezzled money from his father under the names of gang members that he had murdered.

When Sullivan recovers, he secretly meets with John Rooney during Mass and shares his discovery about Connor. Rooney refuses to let his son be harmed. Sullivan is forced to hunt down and kill members of Rooney's gang, including John Rooney himself. With the crime boss dead, Capone finds no reason to protect Connor anymore, and Capone's lieutenant Frank Nitti gives Sullivan a tip to track Connor down and kill him. Apparently free from pursuit, Sullivan and his son make their way to the town of Perdition, Michigan. A disfigured Maguire surprises Michael Sullivan Sr. in the summer house of Sarah (Annie's sister). Maguire shoots Sullivan Sr. from behind, and the assassin finds himself held at gunpoint by Sullivan's son. Maguire approaches the son as Sullivan discourages his son from firing to have blood on his hands. Sullivan is able to shoot Maguire from behind instead, and Sullivan dies in his son's arms. The son mourns his father's death and finds his way to the elderly couple that had helped him and his father, growing up with them.

20,000 years before, our planet is entering an ice age. All kinds of animals begin immigrating to the south, seeking more warm climates. Sid, a sloth who never stops talking is left behind sleeping while everyone else begins the journey to the south. Awaking, he meets Manny, a mammoth who travels to the north, and decides to follow him. When a humans camp is attacked by tigers, a woman takes her baby and jumps on a river. Before she drowns, the baby is rescued by Manny and Sid. The two animals decide to search for the father and return the baby to him. Diego, one of the tigers that attacked the humans, comes also claiming the baby.

The Pianist (2002)

"The Pianist" begins in Warsaw, Poland in 1939, at the outbreak of the Second World War, first introducing Wladyslaw Szpilman, who works as a pianist for the local radio. He is soon introduced to Dorota, who accompanies him around Warsaw to learn of the injustice Jewish people have to face under the new Nazi regime. We soon see Wladyslaw and his family, with one brother and two sisters and living parents, as a tightly-knit Jewish family with different opinions of the war. The father is concerned with it, as if he's an ex marine, the brother - a sarcastic man, has his own opinions. The family faces new anti-Jewish laws and regulations, and soon has to move to the Jewish ghetto emplaced by Nazi rule. The Holocaust is starting, and the family, though well-to-do before the war, is reduced to subsistence level, although they are still better off than many of their fellow Jews in the overcrowded, starving, pestilential ghetto.

Wladyslaw takes a job playing piano at a restaurant in the ghetto, turning down a offer to work for the Jewish Police, and the family survives, but living conditions in the ghetto continue to deteriorate and scores of Jews die every day from disease, starvation, and random acts of violence by German soldiers. By 1942, the aged father must apply for working papers through a friend of Wladyslaw, so that he can take a job in a German clothier, but the day comes when it is their turn be shipped to their deaths at the Treblinka concentration camp. As the family sits under the blazing sun in a holding pen with hundreds of other Jews waiting for the trains, the father uses the family's last 20 zlotys to buy a piece of candy from a boy (who apparently isn't aware of his own impending doom). Each family member eats a tiny morsel of candy, their last meal together.

As they are going to the trains, Wladyslaw is saved by Itzak Heller, a Jewish man working as a police guard. Wladyslaw watches the rest of his family board the train, never to be seen again. He hides for a few days, and blends in with the ten percent or so of the Jews that the Nazis kept alive in the ghetto to use as slaves. He is put to work, under grueling, abusive conditions, building a wall. He thinks he sees Dorota, but she passes quickly. He learns that some of the Jews are planning an uprising, and helps them by smuggling guns into the ghetto. A German officer almost catches him once. After this close call, he decides he must escape and take his chances in the larger city, so with the help of friend (who was the friend that got his father working papers) Majorek, he escapes and finds Dorota, who is now married and pregnant, and her brother dead.

They hide Wladyslaw for one night, and the next day take him to a vacant apartment, not far from the ghetto wall, where he can live indefinitely on smuggled food. There he watches the Jewish Ghetto Uprising in 1943, for which he helped smuggle the weapons, and watches weeks later as the uprising is finally crushed and its participants killed. Later, the man who had been taking care of him and smuggling food to him wants to move him, but he decides to stay put, feeling safer where he is. His friend gives him an address to go to in case of an emergency, and leaves. Wladyslaw remains in the apartment a few more months until he has an accident , breaking some dishes. The noise has blown his cover, and he has to scurry out of the building, being chased by an angry German woman.

Wladyslaw goes to the emergency address he was given, where he meets another man who is with the Jewish resistance hiding Jews. This man hides Wladyslaw in another vacant apartment, where there is a piano, but his new caretaker is very slack about smuggling in food, and Wladyslaw once more faces starvation, and at one point almost dies of jaundice. He recovers in time to bear witness to the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, in which the Poles tried to retake control of their city. Soon, Nazis start attacking the building and he has to flee. The Poles had expected the advancing Soviet Red Army to help them, but the Russians did not come, instead allowing the Germans to put down the revolt, and drive the entire remaining population of Warsaw out of the city. Wladyslaw hides in the abandoned hospital that had been across the street from his second hideout. The Germans had by then decided to burn Warsaw to ashes, so Wladyslaw flees the hospital and jumps back over the wall into the ghetto, now an abandoned, desolate wasteland of bricks and rubble.

He stays there, rummaging through burned-out buildings to find something to eat, and continues to hide, until one night a Nazi officer, Captain Wilm Hosenfeld, finds him. There was a piano in the building, and Wladyslaw played for Hosenfeld. Hosenfeld was moved by his music, and he helped Wladysaw survive, by bringing him food and giving him his coat. By this time, it is early 1945, and the sound of Russian artillery in the distance shows that the liberation of Warsaw is at last imminent. Hosenfeld leaves as the Germans abandon the city. Shortly afterward, Wladyslaw sees Polish partisans, and, overcome with joy, goes outside to meet his countrymen. Seeing his coat given to him by Hosenfeld, they think he is a German and try to kill him, before he can convince them he is Polish.

Newly freed Poles walk past an improvised Russian prisoner of war camp, and Hosenfeld is among the prisoners. The Poles hurl insults at the Germans through the fence, but when Hosenfeld hears that one of the Poles is a musician, he goes to the fence and tells him that he helped Wladislaw, and asks him to ask Wladislaw to return the favor, before a Russian soldier throws him back down on the ground. The Polish musician does indeed bring Wladislaw back to the site to petition the Russians, but they have departed without a trace by the time he gets there. Wladislaw is unable to help Hosenfeld, but he returns to playing piano for the radio station.

Hosenfeld died in a Soviet gulag in 1952. Wladislaw lived to be an old man, dying in Poland at the age of 88.

In 1846, as waves of Irish immigrants poured into the New York neighborhood of Five Points, a number of citizens of British and Dutch heritage who were born in the United States began making an open display of their resentment toward the new arrivals. William Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis), better known as "Bill the Butcher" for his deadly skill with a knife, bands his fellow "Native Americans" into a gang to take on the Irish immigrants; the immigrants in turn form a gang of their own, "The Dead Rabbits," organized by Priest Vallon (Liam Neeson). After an especially bloody clash between the Natives and the Rabbits leaves Vallon dead, his son goes missing; the boy ends up in a brutal reform school before returning to the Five Points in 1862 as Amsterdam (Leonardo DiCaprio). Now a strapping adult who has learned how to fight, Amsterdam has come to seek vengeance against Bill the Butcher, whose underworld control of the Five Points through violence and intimidation dovetails with the open corruption of New York politician "Boss" Tweed (Jim Broadbent). Amsterdam gradually penetrates Bill the Butcher's inner circle, and he soon becomes his trusted assistant. Amsterdam also finds himself falling for Jenny Everdeane (Cameron Diaz), a beautiful but street-smart thief who was once involved with Bill. Amsterdam is learning a great deal from Bill, but before he can turn the tables on the man who killed his father, Amsterdam's true identity is exposed, even though he has concealed it from nearly everyone, including Jenny.
