Industrial Dresser: Before & After

You might not be surprised to hear that this big 'ol beauty was headed to the garbage.

I'm pretty sure it had lived a full life! A stranger on Facebook messaged me and asked if I wanted it- it happens all the time! Of course I said yes!

When we brought it home I never second guessed its potential- although my husband thought I was crazy! The top and sides were completely worn and had major holes and wear in them, as well as the drawer fronts looked a awful sight, and all those missing knobs! It's hard to tell from this picture, but there was only a few drawer fronts that the glass was still intact- 4 out of 6! But besides all that is was solid wood construction and I liked the shape!

First thing I did was take out the glass from the drawer fronts and then picked up new knobs from Home Depot. Then we cut new sides from bead board and cut a new top from a nice piece of hardwood. Then he sat in my garage for several weeks waiting to be done!

I was able to convince my friend that she wanted this ugly thing- because I knew once it was done it would be perfect in her sons room! And She trusted me! All she had to go off was the picture above... and some serious convincing!

First I gave the drawer fronts 2 good sanding sessions, and 2 good coats of paint (with sanding in-between), I then had my husband cut pieces of Diamond plate to fill the holes in the fronts. I knew I really wanted it to have a industrial look.

After the second coat of paint the drawers looked a million times better!

Then we stated piecing it all together. We added the sides, trim on the base to make it sturdy and add wheels, then trim on the top, and of course the actually top piece. The whole frame is basically new, we secured a lot of the inside frame work and made sure all the drawers were in good sliding condition. It might not seem like a lot- but it was! It took us a few weeks to get it into shape!

After filling in all the nail holes and waiting for glue to dry I gave it all another good sanding .

My favorite part about the whole thing is the wheels! It makes it much easier to move around but also makes it looks so good!

I did have to give it all another good coat of Premier Decor Enamel Black Paint from Scotty's here in Rigby, it is a water base enamel and dries much harder than water base acrylic paint. I love it for anything that will get heavy use, it is super easy to clean and leaves a great sheen, and it sprays like a dream! (It's like a oil base paint without the mess of oil.)

For the top finish I stained it a light grey, then went over it with a walnut stain and quickly wiped it off. It left a great worn look. After a good coat of poly and dry time I was finished.

I couldn't wait to get it over to its new home! Im pretty sure any boy or man would want this in their home! (My husband asked several times if we could just keep it for storage in our garage! I kept telling him it's to nice for the garage!)

Moral of the story: Feel free to send me your furniture garbage!

A Chair and Some Before & Afters

Isn't it fantastic?!!

Upholstery is something that has always intimidated me! I left those projects to my mother!

Once I read up on it- and had some major fails!! A very painful tetanus shot and I learned the hard way to always wear rubber gloves! Besides that I am starting to love upholstery!

I will admit that I am still learning and sometimes I want to throw the piece across the room! But for the most part I actually like doing it. It is a great way to relieve stress!
And the AFTER's are always so satisfying!

For this chair we started here...

She might not look to bad... but she SMELLED awful!! I think she might have been a cat bed/ GROSS! I'm not a cat person. So the first thing I did was rip all the fabric off and ~~burned~~ threw it out. (Then took a couple showers.) I didn't even keep the foam or backing as a template. I couldn't.

I did keep the base piece of wood, but that was it.

Then I sanded and sprayed all the wood a nice matte black. It made all the difference. I'm really starting to love black again!

The poor thing sat in my garage for months. Between life and everything else she was constantly put on the back burner. Then one day I woke up in the mood to finish it! I couldn't wait!

I cut the foam and batting and got her all stapled up nice and tight. Then attached the back.

Then I was stuck.

Buttons are hard! And they are a killer on your fingers if you try and do them yourself! I had some button molds on hand and tried over and over to make them work, but for whatever reason- the material was to thick or something- they wouldn't take. My fingers had blisters and my hands looked like they had gone through a shredder!! I was a little frustrated so I put the thing to the side and had to wait a few days to get back to her!

Then one day I drove past a store in Idaho Falls called "The Upholster Center"- I went in and asked how much to do buttons, .80 cents, What?!!! Why was I killing myself!! So they made me a bunch and I was on my way! Ive also been back a few times since and these guys are amazing to work with!

The back cushion took much trial and error, but when I finished she looked amazing!

I couldn't wait to get the cording on and her all finished up!

I had a hard time letting her go! Even my husband was impressed!

I couldn't be happier with how she came together! And I couldn't wait for her new owner to come get her! I was like a proud parent!

I'm still on the hunt to find her twin sister to keep for myself!

Like this oak desk I did for a teenage boy who's only request was... Blue.

And these end tables that almost ended up at the DI! Good thing one Granddaughter knew they would look fantastic painted!

And of course, what is a lovely lady like this to do besides be painted a nice fresh coat of Ivory and gifted some shiny new jewels? I think she looks 20 years younger.

This time of year I am taking new orders as well as wrapping up a bunch of ones!

A Piano

Pianos are beginning to be my favorite thing to refinish.

They are complicated and take a lot of time, but they are so worth the effort in the end.

This Piano has been waiting to be refinished for months, maybe longer! When I decided to sell it it went fast! It was bittersweet to let it go, but Im so glad how it all turned out, I'm not even sad about it!

She started out like this...

Just your basic piano.

I loved the lines and simplicity of it.

I knew it had great potential.

When refinishing a piano PREP IS KEY!

You can't use a electric sander, you cannot add nails, you cannot tape enough!! All of these things can damage the sound board if done wrong. It took me a few days to get it all ready for paint. I used a deglosser and liquid sander, as well as just elbow grease to sand down some rough spots. Then I sprayed it with my go to Antique White, Satin, Sherwin Williams Duration Paint.

It took two good coats.

Then I used a Dark Walnut Gel Stain to cover the top and bench. Gel stain is thick and gives a nice rich coat, it also dries faster and soaks in really well. Its amazing.

Inside the keys I taped off really well to leave the original finish, I didn't want to lose the Logo or original detailing. I simply freshened it up with some liquid gold.

After it was done I wiped the edges down with a dark glaze and quickly wiped it off, giving it a little bit of depth.

She is a stunner!

We delivered it and it looks perfect in it's new home!

A Vanity

I like to Hunt for items for clients.

A lot of times a person will come to me with something they are looking for- all I really need is a price range and I do the rest of the foot work!

Like this fantastic vanity!

My friend has one little girl- and four boys! She wanted a vintage looking vanity to put in her daughters room, as a Christmas gift.

It only took me a few days and I found this amazing vanity. Once I saw it I knew it would be PERFECT! I bought it then and let my friend know.

Then I was able to strip it down and paint it a perfect Antique white, with lite distressing. I also painted the insides of the drawers gold. (The girls room will be white, gold, with light pink accents!)

I later found the little stool from a lady I happened to buy some other pieces from, it fit perfectly!

It will be recovered later- once we decide what material to cover it with!

My friend also brought this great dresser over to have done to also fit in the same room. I hand painted all those little gold dots one by one! The pink is so subtle with the touch of gold, it makes my heart happy. I can't wait to see this room finished!

I couldn't be happier with how this order turned out!

A Upholstered Chair

My mother is the expert when it comes to upholstery, she usually is the one that does all of them. But it has been a goal of mine to learn it, and there is no better time than the present.

My friend brought this chair over, a family member gave it to her for free! It already had great bones but was about 30-40 years old. It needed a little TLC.

BEFORE:

The hardest part about upholstery for me is the beginning... the tear apart.

You have to be careful to keep all your pieces in pretty good shape so you can use them as patterns. Sometimes that is difficult- especially when the fabric is so worn and old.

But after a few hours, blisters, and a little blood I was able to get it down to the bones.

The insides were in fantastic shape. The client brought a big roll of material to be used to recover it and I was able to piece it together with only a few do- overs!

I learned a lot with this one! But it turned out to be a show stopper!

1. Stripes are hard!

2. Cording, tack strips, and trim are your best friend.

3. Wear gloves.

4. If at first you don't succeed! Try Try again!

The chair has a cushion and she was able to recover that, so these pictures are shown without it, hence the bumpy base!

Adding Details

When this cabinet was brought to me it was a simple box.

I did take a "before" picture but cannot find it! So- imagine this cabinet with a solid door- and nothing else! Just a bright yellow dingy cabinet.

I cut out the middle of the door to accommodate it for a VCR and cable box. Then I added some chicken wire to the back of the door. After that I used scrap pieces of trim that I had from other projects, both to the base and the top of the cabinet. Then the last thing I added with the curved cut out plywood pieces, this really added the most dramatic change, and made this little box feel so much more sophisticated!

Now for the magic!

Once it is all painted the same color it looks like it was "born this way!" I simply painted it my favorite grey paint, added a little glazing, and put on a new iron handle. You would never know this came from a old garage! It's amazing what some added details will to do a somewhat simple piece of furniture!

Crackled Desk Story

This desk was a serious undertaking, it took me 3 months to finish! I know- f.o.r.e.v.e.r!

But the finished product made the process completely worth it.

It was brought to me by a client who said she just wanted it painted black- that I could not do. I could not cover the layers or existing paint and call it good. This baby had originally been painted yellow, then white, then a country blue, then last it was crackled with a white finish. Not good.

The previous paint jobs were very thick and very poorly done. It was a nightmare to say the least.

I knew under all that paint was a nice piece of wood furniture- it took some serious elbow grease and a lot of paint stripper (4+ layers) to get it down to the original wood.

Here is what she originally looked like when I first got her- the entire thing (front, sides, back) was in this thick crackle finish! There were missing knobs and broken drawers as well- it was kinda sad.

The drawers were terrible- see how before the sides were even gooped up?! They didn't close very tight and a few were almost completely falling apart.

I had to do a lot of gluing and nailing them tightly together- then after a lot of sanding and sanding and stripper and more sanding. I was able to get all the drawers back to their original state! Check out those dove tails!!

That step took me a month. No Joke. I would sit and sand while the kids ran around outside, I do NOT enjoy sanding! But it was very rewarding when they all were done.

I then did the same thing to the top.

It took me another month!

(At this point I almost gave up, I hated this thing!)

I ended up using more stripper on the top and it is not a fun thing to use. You have to wear gloves and protective eye/face wear. If you get any of it on your skin it stings terribly and burns! (This happened a few times.) It's also very strong smelling so I could only do it with the garage open- which means tiny humans kept coming around- which means I kept having to get after the tiny humans to get away! Maybe that is why it took me so long?!

Finally- the worst part was done. Prep-work is not fun.

I then gave the sides/back/and center a really good sanding, I was mainly trying to get the crackle finish off, which felt close to impossible. It was smooth to the touch it just looked crackly still.

I then covered the top and was finally able to spray the base black.

I used a enamel base paint on this one- it is a water base paint that actually dries harder than laytex (kind of like oil base paint without the mess). I loved the sheen it gave and the durability. Once I had sanded the piece so many times the wood was pretty soft, this helped bring back the strength- it turned out fantastic.

Then I took off my protective covering! There was NO WAY I was going to paint that top after all that hard work! I called the client and begged her to let me stain the top in a dark walnut- she said she couldn't visualize it, but trusted me! (Phew!) The wood looked so great in this state, to paint it might have caused me to "accidentally" set it on fire!! (It was a little bit of a pain in my...) Anyway, I was very relieved and got right to staining.

I covered it in 3 coats of Dark Walnut stain.

Glorious!

I loved the imperfections and how smooth it came out.

I then did a quick sanding on the drawers only- to give them depth, and then added new metal hardware. Finally a thick coat of polyurethane to make it nice and shinny.

Like I said- 3 months! It was defiantly a battle I wanted to quit a few times, but I'm glad I stuck it out. I took a lot of my frustrations out on this little lady- she handled it all very nicely. You would never know she was once a country crackled hot mess!

As a extra little reward I lined her drawers with some dainty coated paper. She deserved it after all she had been through.

She turned out to be a stunner- even her backside.

Even though this one was difficult Im always up for the challenge! I think that is why I love doing this so much, the end result is so rewarding!

thrifted chairs

Every once in a while if you check our local Craigslist page you can find some good treasures- but it doesn't happen very often! Most of the time the price is to high or the item is no longer available. Lucky for me that didn't happen this time!!

I just happened to look at my Craigslist app at the right moment and snatched these beauties right up!

I was so excited when I picked these up- they were not so pretty to begin with, but the bones were good! I was pretty lucky with this find, not only was the wood in great shape, but the padding was in amazing condition, no stains or tears, and best of all no smells! (Gross right?!) I took them apart as soon as I got home! Sadly it was a Sunday evening when I picked them up so the rest would have to wait.

The Chair on the left is what they both looked like- the one on the right is what they looked like after I tore all the fabric and padding off!

And Here is what they look like NOW!!

Isn't it amazing what a little time, work, and paint can do?!!

For now these ARE NOT FOR SALE! I plan on using them in my own home! But I am currently booking custom furniture jobs in May! Contact me if you'd like some more information!

Bedroom Set Make-over

I've been busy working on this beautiful set for the past month. (Yes, it took me that long!! Between trying to heat up my garage and waiting for paint to dry it took longer than expected!)

It came with a few challenges- like most quality pieces do- but was worth the sweat put into it!

I'm pretty excited about how it all came out…

Here is what it all looked like originally… (I jumped into it before I got a good picture!!)

Originally I sprayed the hardware gold, but didn't like the contrast with the white, so I ended up spraying them again with the same Antique White.

This set took several coats: Sanding deglosser, bonding primer, 2-3 coats of paint, then I finished with a light polyurethane coating.

And here it is in all it's glory...

I added a little matching contact paper in the drawers for a added little surprise!

I used True Value EasyCare, "Heritage Home" for the end table.

It's always a little nerve-raking when I paint such beautiful pieces to begin with, but this set was worth the stress. The details and good quality wood made for a beautiful outcome!

2nd: I, Annalee, will continue to do Custom Refinishing Work for Clients along with tutorials and giveaways on the blog! I'll also be selling bits and pieces here and there… again all here on the Blog!

3rd: The Flea Market itself is still yet to be determined if it will continue or not!
Im taking things one step at a time! ;)

We are both trying to simplify our lives and feel that 2014 is the time to start!

Country caboodle fair

It opens at 2:00pm and goes until 7:00pm

This is not just for the Ladies!! There are cool vendors that even the Men will love! (Like Gun and Hunting stuff!)

a clock make-over!

Isn't she beautiful! Here is how it all happened!
A great friend of ours brought this clock over...

It defiantly had great potential with all of it's curves and detail. The sponge paint, forest green color, and lovely flower stencils have seen better days! I got really excited to dig in as soon as I saw it. I took out the glass, took off the doors and hinges, and then gave it a good wipe down.

First I sprayed it with a thick coat of Bonding Primer (This is key! Bonding primer is any furniture refinishers best friend! I helps keep those ugly oil stains and smells from seeping through the paint!) I prefer Lowe's Valspar Bonding Primer... Shown Here.

Then after a good 24 hours of dry time I got out my sprayer and sprayed all the trim details in a nice glossy coat of pure white. (I also used Valspar Signature/Gloss.) I've used a lot of different kinds and brands of paint, for me, the Signature Line at Lowes and the EasyCare line at Ace Hardware are by far my favorite.

Then I hand painted and rolled all the Mustard (Grove in EasyCare/Gloss). After two good coats I had to go back with a very fine tip brush and do the edges. That took quite a while and a lot of patience. This color is my go to color for a mustardy- yellow, and since it is very popular right now Ive been going through it like crazy!

I also found these perfect little knobs at Target! I couldn't wait to get them home and on this beauty!

The original clock was broken, so after I pulled out all the guts I left the hole for a new one to be installed later.

I love how the paint makes the trim look so much beefier...yes, beefier!! (Is that just a Idaho phrase?!) It means bigger, bulkier, more substantial!! ;)

And here she is in all her lovely glory! I think she loves her new make-over!

When we dropped her off in her new spot at her home she fit in perfectly! Now she is the Belle of the Ball instead of the ugly stepsister!

I went to our local grocery store first thing in the morning and snatched up a copy! Turn to Page 122...

There is also some other beautiful Eye-Candy in this magazine, for example, I have a table and 8-Chair set that looks exactly like this one just waiting to be finished... I love the little seat skirts!

And this slipper advent?

I die!

It's all really exciting for us. Although this is just a small thing to most people its a BIG DREAM of ours! We are pretty proud of how far we have come in only a couple of years! This is defiantly our dream job and no doubt there has been A LOT of sweat and tears, but when something like this happens it makes the hard days seem worth it. We really do love what we do.

This is a Beautiful Duncan Phyfe table and 6 chair set. All 6 chairs are in AMAZING condition, very sturdy and all intact! The table is 63 x 37.5 inches. The base is its its original dark stain and all claw feet are intact. Hinges all work perfect and table is very sturdy!

All the chairs have new padding and have been covered in a durable linen.

(I can cover the seats in plastic for no extra charge if wanted.)

a bright desk

... I just wanted to stop in and show you that we aren't always about black and white!
I like to do fun custom color work as well!

This fun desk and chair was brought to me by a friend, for her daughters new room, she said to do whatever I felt like! I went a little BOLD with the colors!

Using this fun Owl Set from Target as her color inspiration, I took this in to Lowes and had them color match a few colors!

And who doesn't love a little shinny Gold hardware these days?!

I person the colors match perfect! And it adds a fun pop of color to her already colorful room!

It was a lot of fun to do something so different!

Since we are in the middle of BIG CHANGES... more on that soon!... I wanted to stop in and show you how we not only make OLD things NEW, but NEW things look OLD!

For example:
A client brought these 4 brand spankin new barstools (they were still in the box!) to me this week! She wanted them to look OLD! So, a little paint, sanding, and poly to seal it all up, they look Good as New! (But in a New made Old kind of way!)

I love doing custom work. I get really excited to see the finished product and most of the time I HATE giving my clients back their furniture! (I want to keep everything!)
