Herbs & Spices not only add great flavour to your food, some can even have higher antioxidant activity than fruits, vegetables and some spices, including garlic. Here are tips for growing and caring for your spices, as well as more information on their health benefits.

Culinary herbs are different from spices. Generally, culinary herbs are fresh or dried leaves while spices are seeds, roots, fruits, flowers, and bark. Culinary herbs usually have a mild flavor while spices tend to have a stronger, pungent flavor.

Partial list of Herbs: basil, bay leaf, chervil, dill, fennel, lavender, marjoram, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary, sage, savory, tarragon, thyme.

Partial list of Spices: allspice, anise seed, caraway seed, cardamom, cayenne pepper, celery seed, chili powder, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, cumin, curry powder, ginger, mace, mustard, nutmeg, paprika, black pepper, poppy seed, saffron, sesame seed, turmeric.

Herbal Use in Recipes:

Use three times the amount of chopped fresh herbs versus dried herbs called for in a recipe. For example, use 1 tablespoon (3 teaspoons) chopped fresh sage instead of 1 teaspoon dried.

If you have grown your own herbs and want to preserve them at the end of the outdoor growing season for use in winter recipes, try freezing them to preserve more fresh taste, as drying them reduces their flavor.

Keeping Fresh Herbs Fresh:

To store most fresh herbs that you purchase in the grocery store, keep them fresh by standing the bunch in a glass with 1 inch of cold water. Secure a plastic bag over the top and refrigerate for up to 10 days, changing the water every 2 days.

How to Cut Herbs:

To gather leaves from your outdoor herbs, cut or pinch down to the next grouping of leaves. For grass-like herbs (chives), cut at the base of the herb.

Strong herbs: Winter savory, rosemary and sage.

Herbs strong enough for accent: Sweet basil, dill, mint, sweet marjoram, tarragon and thyme.

Herbs for blending: Chives, parsley and summer savory.

Storage and Flavor of Herbs and Spices

Stored in an airtight container, in a cool, dry place, spices retain their potency longer than you'd think.

4 years for whole spices
2 to 3 years for ground spices
1 to 3 years for leafy herbs, depending on the herb.

Whole peppercorns, nutmegs, and cinnamon sticks hold on to their flavor for ages.

Particularly potent whole spices, such as cloves, cumin, and cardamom will also last for a long, long time.

Ideally, try to purchase spices whole and grind them, as you do not know how long ground spices have been stored in a warehouse or store.

Whole spices will keep the longest, because they have not been cracked or ground, exposing the volatile compounds which make up their flavor to the air. They can last up to four years in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, and will keep even better in the dark

Health Benefits of Herbs and Spices

Researchers say many herbs are only absorbed by the body when they are eaten with fat, so cooking with oil will help release the antioxidants.

Taking herbs and spices as a supplement in pill form will not do much for you because supplements are usually taken with water and your body cannot absorb them that way.

Herbs have higher antioxidant activity than fruits, vegetables and some spices, including garlic. Those with the most antioxidants are, in order, oregano, dill, thyme, rosemary and peppermint.

Some spices have always been known for their help in preserving foods. Recent work has shown that gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria are slowed with the addition of "... garlic, onion, cinnamon, cloves, thyme, sage, and others..." These spices are being found to inhibit the growth of microbes: cinnamon, cloves, mustard, allspice, bay leaf, caraway, coriander, cumin, oregano, rosemary, sage, thyme, and, to a lesser extent, black pepper, red pepper, and ginger.

Health Benefits From Herbs, Spices and Foods
The jury is dived about fortified vitamins, some say that they work against inflammatory disorders. For me thats how it seemed. I don't argue, I found ways to get what I needed by eating powerful foods and coming up with recipes where I could use as much nutrient charged ingredients I could put together and taste great!

I no longer have stomach pain and horrible swelling, not for two years now. I use every herb and spice I can in my cooking. Garlic,cilantro,rosemary,cumin(lots of it, it is the best), coriander(it is the manna seed the bible talks about),cinnamon, raw ginger. many other healing spices and herbs. Beans of every type especially black beans and lentils, very powerful food. My dentist, who is an Asian nutritionist consultant as well says no fruit, only bananas, they regulate sugar. Other fruits have too much sugar, Morgellons, cancer thrives on sugar. Tomatoes have lactose, if you're lactose intolerance, can cause stomach cramps. I had to stay away from dairy all together for a couple years. No sugar, no sugar! Lots and lots of olive oil, also very good.

No artificial sugar, honey if you really need sweet.

Organic meat, vegetables whenever possible. Try and avoid processed foods, no hydrogenated foods at all!

I eat homemade soups and stews 3 times a week. My lesions are nearly gone and leg tremors gone, neurological symptoms near normal,sensitivity to light much, much better,no black specks for two years, and no fibers for 3 years.
Black Bean Chili Recipe
Here's my black bean chili recipe even my husband with severe ulcers can eat, because I don't use chili powder. It is the ultimate power food!
In 2 tbsp. olive oil, fry small, chopped, onion, 1 cup chopped, brown mushrooms, diced green pepper, add 1 lb. hamburger, brown, add 1 Tbsp. chopped garlic 3 tsp. sea salt, 2 tsp. black pepper. Add, med. size can of tomato sauce, can of black beans drained, but don't rinse, 1/2 Tbsp. black olives, chopped Tbsp. lime juice, 1/2 tsp. hot pepper sauce, 1/2 C. brown rice, 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar or red wine, stir. Add enough water for a soupy consistency.
You can use diced carrots, celery if desired
Simmer low heat 3 hours add 1 cup of water every hour and stir well occasionally. After 3 hours, add enough water for desired thickness only.
Half hour before serving(not before, for fullest flavor): chop handful of cilantro,rosemary,parsley,oregano, whatever (fresh herbs you think will work) toss in the pot with one whole bay leaf. (remove bay leaf before serving).

Stir gently until distributed.

Ok this is where you can get creative, or use what is on hand any of these and whatever else you think will go.

Heaping tsp. coriander, cumin, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon, 1/2 tsp paprika.

I use a lot of the above herbs and spices in chicken soup, 1 tps lemon juice, 1/2 tsp. ginger, white wine to taste if desired. Instead of red wine and hot sauce

In the past two years I haven't had much problem with my stomach, urine problems, bowel problems. It has been all good for my system.

If your not used to high fiber diet, you may want to use as a side dish for a while.

It may make you cramp a bit at first and have more than average bowel movement. It's backed up sludge that needs cleansing to be honest. You will regulate.

You may notice more activity in the beginning, hard bits, junk flush up out of skin, bear with it! That's your immune system kicking the buggers, bad bacteria out. If you eat this 3 times a week, I eat if for a snack now, (black bean chips and use for a dip, yummy), in about two months your stomach swelling will be much better, muscle pain, joint pain all your symptoms will improve. I used to have real problems with my organs, urine problems ,bowel problems, heart, everything is much better now. My lesions used to look like someone hacked me up with a hatchet and I couldn't move for the swelling. Now my lesions are nearly gone. I had it bad for 5 years and had to learn what's best to eat.

I use pulverized ginger, and lemon juice in my bath and it sloughs off rough skin, also good for dandruff. Works excellent for my cats dander. I wet a cloth and put ginger and lemon inside and rub cloth all over areas affected. Don't get in poor kitty's eyes and make sure cloth wet enough so it's not too concentrated and give them a good comb out.. Do this every three days and their dander is gone. I finally convinced my Hubby to use it, he was plagued with heavy dandruff for months. He finally couldn't stand it and no shampoo worked. I take the pulverized ginger 1 Tbsp. and 1 Tbsp. of lemon juice, work it in and leave it for 5 minutes. It makes his hair and scalp feel good. Now I only have to treat him once a week and there is no embarrassing flaking in between.

I wish you all the luck, I know how baffling it this disorder can be!

Head of broccoli cut large pieces
Med. sized quartered tomatoes 2
Small cremini mushrooms sm. carton halved
1/2 lb baby carrots halved
4 cloves of garlic rough chopped
small onion rough chopped
1 tbsp.coriander, salt, pepper
olive oil
stir fry sauce
Lay vegetable and beef in single layer on cookie sheet
Drizzle liberally with olive oil
distribute garlic evenly
sprinkle coriander evenly, sea salt,pepper to taste
cover tightly with foil and seal around edges around cookie sheet
toss lightly with as much rice as you desire and as much stir fry sauce as you like.

The Problem

The Conservative government is about to raise the raise the limits on pesticide residues on fruit and vegetables grown in Canada.

Why? To "harmonize" pesticide regulations under NAFTA. Presently, the United States allows 40% more pesticide residue on their own produce. The stricter pesticide controls in Canada are a "trade irritant", and the proposed harmonization is now being fast-tracked as part of the Security and Prosperity Partnership.

The Solution

Must we risk the health and safety of Canadians for the sake of good trading relations? Absolutely not!

The United States has some of the weakest pesticide residue rules in the developed world. They should be harmonizing with Canada's standards, and not the other way around.

Elizabeth May and the Green Party supports good trade relations with our American neighbours. But not at the expense of the health of Canadians.

That's not just good economic sense. That's common sense.

MORGELLONS ARTICLE

The next global epidemic is now upon us. Some have referred to it as Morgellon’s. Morgellon's is an ad hoc term used to describe a condition where fibers emerge from different, slow - healing lesions of the body. The term was coined by a boy's mother in Pennsylvania who has vowed to find out the root and source of the problem.

What has this country done? What have we allowed to be put in our food sources, our environment, and our bodies? The answer is that we have allowed dangerous food, skin strippers, neurotoxins, and pesticides that are disrupting our ecosystem and our endocrine systems. Plastics are leaching endocrine disruptors in nano amounts and creating an estrogen disruptor that mimics our Estrogen Output 7 times greater than what we normally produce. This is causing multiple problems on multiple levels. It is causing breast cancer and cancer in children. For 40 years the large chemical companies and drug companies have literally owned us. Dow has polluted us with poisons; Monsanto has bioengineered bugs to kill other bugs. Powerful pharmaceutical companies control and own our government and this country on many levels. Toxins spill onto our rivers, oceans and soil and are creating an environmental wasteland from sea to shining sea. All of this boils down to corporate greed and hunger. Most recently, drug companies are manipulating congress to own, buy up and issue legislation controlling on of our last bastions of hope, homeopathic medicine and vitamins.

The FDA celebrated its 100 year anniversary while they allow drug companies to test their own drugs and make huge dollars on drug companies. It is like the fox guarding the henhouse. As a result, we now are looking at the next epidemic, Morgellons. It is a strange phenomenon, caused by exposure to toxins, pyridines’, and a deadly chemical overload on our bodies. This causes such a body burden, that the normal person's endocrine system cannot overcome it. In other words, the overuse of antibiotics and skin stripping chemicals has rendered the human body with none of its own natural defenses to ward off body bugs, strange fibers, etc. Everyone wants the magic bullet, a pill, to solve this very complex problem. Why can't they just give us a drug? Nanotechnology has rendered us incapable of knowing what to put in our bodies. Antibiotics and steroids are making these people better for a short time, but the disease snaps back and symptoms become worse. Doctors are refusing to see patients, and when they do see them, they are misdiagnosed or considered delusional.

The Common Thread is Exposure to molds, chemicals, toxins in our food, the environment in and outside of the home. Then the body's defense mechanisms, weakened by a poisonous environment, leave the patient unable to fight off the organisms. The symptoms begin with a pimple that won't go away, a dash, or a "v" shaped dark spot. Afterwards, a rash erupts and some patients see fibers and even bugs. Some have horrible ulcerations that look like Impetigo. Some are diagnosed with Scabies, only to be given more poison which will not help. Some of my patients have also been diagnosed with shingles.

In October 2006, I held an observation of persons with signs of biting, itching, and crawling at my husband's office. He is an Orthopedic Surgeon practicing in Brooksville, Florida. The total number of patients involved in the observation was 10 people. These precious people traveled from all over the country. 2 doctors and 3 nurses and an Entomologist witnessed the observation and watched as we applied a special soap comprised of all natural special selected ingredients. The total waiting period after the soap after the application was 5 minutes.

From people's skin, I extracted mites, flies, worms, fibers etc from these people. Out of 10 of the observation volunteers, only 1 was delusional. (See the Pre-Sent Photos taken at 100X).

Since that time I have seen elderly women with bugs coming out of their bodies. Their homes had been sprayed, or trees sprayed with common commercial insecticides resulting in the systems being immunocomprimised and ultimately resulting in Morgellons. I have observed that children have been born with these same symptoms. These People are being put on anti-psychotics for delusions of parasitosis or DOP. This is what our big drug companies have done for us.

I get emails now from more than 100 persons with this illness. I have been on WSVN with news anchor Patrick Fraser where I predicted the next epidemic. This phenomenon is also related to Lyme disease, a vector borne disease. Many people Morgellon's disease are testing positive for Lyme disease, if they can find a doctor who will test them. Many people are not on the Internet and are struggling to find a name for this. In my small community I know of 14 persons with disease, and one doctor who has an open mind who can help them with diet and nutrition and decent skin care regiment.

I have numerous persons who were hazardous materials waste truck drivers in Aberdeen Maryland who have contracted this disease. The same environmental clue was present, toxic exposure. These guys are not drug addicts, and derelicts, but to the contrary, they are regular nice guys who were doing their job. They knew something was wrong when they saw someone's expensive HASMAT full-body gear in a dumping ground. It was the same refuse they were preparing to transport. as a result, they were infested with bugs and most likely "Collembola" and or "Black Fly'.

Another interesting pattern has emerged since the most recent hurricane in New Orleans. The incidence of infestations has gone up. What toxins were in the ground and water? Toxins mold, and lowered immunity from the stress of this storm caused the incidence of this disease to increase in Florida and throughout the south.

In 1942 George Merck, invented a Mycobacterium that would not kill people but would cause illnesses which the huge pharmaceutical company, Merck could create the drugs to help them. Yes, the next epidemic has hit, and it is bugs and Morgellons. Thanks for the fibers you have all created, the bugs are now outpacing the drugs and big corporate giants and chemical companies have reaped the profit at our expense.

I will scream until I gasp my last breath for these people you have poisoned. The next Epidemic has hit and it is worse than we know.

The truth behind genetic engineering is extremely complex. It has been used for decades, but it is only in the last ten years that neurotoxins have been engineered into our food supply.

No one has studied the long term health implications of children consuming foods containing neurotoxins, novel proteins and allergens.

Though to look back over the last ten years, you quickly remember that ten years ago, we didn¹t have to worry about sending a peanut butter and jelly sandwich into school with our children; we didn¹t have to medicate our eight year olds to get them through the school day; and the movie, Rain Man, was all we knew of autism.

Today, at least 1 out of every 17 children under the age of three has a food allergy with at least 5 million American children suffering from this condition (though these statistics underestimate the problem since they are from 2002, over five years old).

Autism, diabetes and obesity are often referred to as American epidemics.

So what has changed?

In 1996, the United States adopted widespread use of genetically modified crops due to growing public concern over the health risks associated with the industrial spraying of insecticidal and pesiticidal toxins.

In an effort to reduce the spraying of these toxins, scientists began using biotechnology to engineer these pesticides and insecticides into the plants themselves.

As these ingredients were introduced around the world ten years ago, government agencies in Europe, Asia, Australia, Japan, Russia and 45 developed countries required them to be listed on food labels, so that consumers could make informed choices when it came to feeding their families.

In the United States, our regulatory agencies do not require these genetically engineered ingredients to be labeled.

So, unlike other developed countries, we have not been informed that almost 70% of our corn, 90% of our soy and 75% of our processed food now contain neurotoxins, novel proteins and allergens.

Today one out of every three children suffers from allergies, asthma, autism or ADHD. It appears that we have unknowingly and without informed consent engaged our children in one of the largest human trials in history.

Ten years into this human trial, our children are trying to tell us something.

Shouldn't we listen?

1. Reduce your family's exposure to processed foods

2. Eat food with ingredients that your grandmother would have used

3. Purchase organic eggs, as they are not from chickens fed corn engineered to produce its own insecticides

4. Cook with olive oil instead of butter, margarine or vegetable oil

5. Avoid conventional soy and corn products (vegetable oil, high fructose corn syrup) since most are genetically engineered

6. Look for meat and poultry that not injected with antibiotics and additional hormones

7. As recommended by the British Dietetic Association, avoid exposing infants under the age of 12 months to conventional soy

8. Consume organic foods for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy in order to reduce your exposure to pesticides (recently linked to autism and gestational diabetes)

9. Look for "rBGH-free" milk. rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) is a genetically engineered, synthetic chemical hormone that is not allowed in milk in most developed countries given its link to breast and prostate cancers

10. When discussing vaccines with your child's pediatrician, especially vaccines grown in eggs, request the informational leaflets that accompany the vaccines as they discuss autoimmune conditions like food allergies in detail

The Morgellons Mystery

Four years ago, Mary Leitao plucked a fiber that looked like dandelion fluff from a sore under her 2-year-old son’s lip. Three pediatricians, three allergists, two dermatologists, and many misdiagnoses later, she realized she had a problem.

Like having bugs under the skin

Her toddler son, Drew, had developed more sores, with more fibers poking out of them. Sometimes the fibers were white, and sometimes they were black, red or blue. He also believed that insects were crawling under his skin, something he conveyed, in 2-year-old fashion, by pointing to his lips and saying “bugs.”

It wasn’t eczema, or an allergy that physicians could discern. Something was wrong. But no one believed Leitao. The last doctor she tried to consult, an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, not only refused to see her, but based on Drew’s growing pile of medical records, suggested it was a case of Munchausen’s by proxy, a psychiatric syndrome in which a parent pretends a child is sick or makes him sick to get attention from the medical system.

Frustrated, in March 2004, Leitao picked a name for what afflicted Drew: Morgellons disease, from an obscure 17th century French medical article describing an illness, called the morgellons, in which black hairs emerge from the skin. Then she put up a Web site.

“I was hoping to hear from scientists or physicians who might understand the problem,” she says. Instead, she heard from thousands of others, all describing the sores and fibers and a list of symptoms that included brain fog, fatigue and muscle and joint pain, among others.

Many of the people who responded to Leitao’s Web site, like Leitao, were locked in conflict with doctors who don’t believe they or their children are sick. This is not a new illness, say doctors, but a time-honored psychiatric disorder called delusional parasitosis; patients with the rare condition — mostly middle-aged women already anxious and depressed — claim to feel subcutaneous bugs. So-called Morgellons disease is just a variation on that theme. Medical skeptics complain that Leitao’s Web site and the evocative name she chose are giving people a framework on which to hang their delusions, thus impeding the true, accepted treatment: antipsychotic drugs.

The debate has grown so heated that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention got involved, and not because they wanted to. They were inundated with calls from irate people who say they have this disorder and want answers.

“This was driven by lay people and some clinicians who are frustrated and not sure what to do with these folks,” says Dan Rutz, spokesman for the CDC. The CDC is assembling a multidisciplinary research team to examine a cluster of patients.

Until then, the Morgellons mystery continues.

Skip the Ziploc

Because skin symptoms are often the most visible aspect of this disease, dermatologists are usually the first to be consulted. Most have no doubt that what they’re seeing is delusional parasitosis. One reason is that Morgellons patients often present them with what they consider to be hallmark evidence: a sample of what’s in their skin. Psychiatrists call it “the matchbox sign,” a reference to the little containers in which the samples are typically stored. (Some doctors now call it the Ziploc sign.)

Morgellons patients often show up in the doctors’ offices carrying Ziplocs full of fibers; dermatologists say they are simply fibers from clothing embedded in self-imposed sores, whereupon they promptly offer a prescription for antipsychotic medication. Rarely, complain the patients, is their skin examined first. “You think you’re bringing them evidence, but you’re really just shooting yourself in the foot,” says Leitao. “It just closes the door.”

Noah Craft, a dermatologist at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, Calif., has seen a handful of Morgellons patients and talked with a number on the phone. He is one of the dermatologists who was approached by the CDC to take part in their investigation. He saw his first Morgellons case three years ago. She came in talking about fibers. And though she didn’t have a Ziploc bag with her, she was clutching a printout about Morgellons from the Web. Like many patients, she’d been to 10 or 12 doctors before him, to no avail.

Craft says that he, unlike many doctors, always examines these patients. There are a number of reasons one might have the sensation of crawling under the skin. For one, he says, there are real bugs, scabies, that do burrow into people. Withdrawal from drugs like methamphetamines can cause that sensation; so can chemical exposure, allergies and dry, sensitive skin.

Once Craft had a patient whose crawling sensation turned out to be melanoma that had spread to her brain. “You have to do due diligence to rule out other causes,” he says.

But when Craft examined his first patient, he found nothing unusual. And because he saw nothing, he felt no reason to do a biopsy. Gently, he suggested the condition might be psychological. She never came back.

Since then, with other Morgellons patients, he has taken the examination further and biopsied their skin. But he’s seen nothing to suggest it’s a real condition — especially not fibers in the patients’ skin. In fact, the only place Craft says he has ever seen the fibers are on Leitao’s Web site. From his computer screen, he says, “they look like fibers of fabric and, on occasion, collagen fibers from within the skin. In the biopsies I have taken, there appear to be only normal skin and inflammation, as one would find in a bump that has been picked at.”

Lone voices

While most physicians seem to lean toward the delusional parasitosis diagnosis, a handful of people think there’s something real going on here. About a year ago, Oklahoma State neuroscientist Randy Wymore stumbled upon Leitao’s Morgellons site and became intrigued. Wymore called Leitao and asked if there were any fibers he could look at.

Within days, Ziplocs were arriving in the mail from around the country. Though the fibers all resembled one another, he says, they looked like no other synthetic or natural fiber he compared them to. Ultimately, he asked fiber experts on the Tulsa police department’s forensics team to examine them.

First they employed a type of spectroscopy that identifies the chemical structures of fibers and compared them to their database of 800 fibers. No match.

Next they subjected fibers to gas chromatography. Compounds put through this process are encased in a vacuum chamber and exposed to high heat; the temperature at which they reach boiling point is a clue to what they are made of. The forensic experts had a database that included the boiling point of 90,000 organic compounds with which to compare the fibers. But the machine ran to its highest temperature, 1,400 degrees, and apart from some slight blackening, nothing happened.

“The conclusion we were left with is that they are unknown fibers, not simply contaminants from clothing sticking to scabs,” says Wymore.

Wymore, who is not a physician, also asked Rhonda Casey, the chief of the pediatrics department at Oklahoma State University Hospital, to take a look at some patients for him. “Honestly, when he first told me about it, I thought, they’re all nuts,” says Casey.

But she changed her mind. “There was not one patient I saw who did not look ill,” she says. What’s more, they all looked ill in the same way, with neurological symptoms, including confusion, foot drop, in which a person loses control of his or her foot and has trouble walking, and a sagging mouth when they spoke. Many had been diagnosed with atypical forms of neurological diseases like Parkinson’s or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

She examined their skin via a dermatoscope, a light tool with a magnifying lens. And she did biopsies on both their lesions and apparently healthy skin. She says she saw fibers embedded in both places. The white ones, she says, are hard to see. A dermatologist who either didn’t look at all, or didn’t use a dermatoscope, might not see them under the skin. But some — the black, red and blue ones — are blatantly obvious, she says. One young girl had a small pimple on her thigh with a bundle of black fibers just barely protruding from it. Many doctors have accused these patients of embedding fibers in the sores themselves, but Casey doesn’t believe it.

“As a physician, I can’t imagine reproducing what I saw in that little girl’s leg.”

There’s also some evidence of an overlap with Lyme disease. Ginger Savely, a San Francisco nurse practitioner with a long history of treating Lyme patients, now sees Morgellons patients and says 90 percent of them test positive for Lyme disease. “I think that one of two things is happening,” she says. “Either there’s a co-infection people are getting at the same time they get Lyme, because there are a lot of infections spread by ticks.” Or whatever is causing Morgellons is something ubiquitous that many of us are exposed to, but the disease develops only in people with weakened immune systems, like those with Lyme disease.

Morgellons in mind

One complicating factor, as even Leitao and Casey admit, is that there are neurological and psychological symptoms that come with Morgellons that make the patients difficult to deal with at times and make it seem as if they really belong on the psychiatrist’s couch.

“Patients start to act unusual,” says Casey. “They get forgetful. They often have a speech hesitation, and they often have a hard time telling their story coherently.”

To her, it’s not surprising. “The disease affects the brain.”

Beyond all that, being told it’s all in your head when you feel sick is bound to be hurtful, says one Morgellons patient who happens to be a clinical psychologist. The hurt leads to contentious encounters with doctors, who then feel more justified than ever in seeing the patients as psychiatrically disturbed.

Casey says her stance on Morgellons is legitimate because of the many cases she’s seen. Most doctors opining about the condition — Craft, for instance — have seen just a handful of patients.

“It’s a disgrace,” Casey says of medical peers who dismiss patients without studying the phenomenon in full. Physicians want to walk into a room, know what’s going on, and write a prescription. Many will make a diagnosis of delusional parasitosis or hypochondria more readily than conclude an office visit without a diagnosis. Nor is the system set up to investigate an unknown quantity.

“If you send a fiber sample to lab, the report will often come back saying textile contaminant,” says Casey. But she watched one laboratorian label a fiber by simply looking under a microscope. “I said, ‘How can you tell?’ And he said, ‘I’m looking at it.’ And that’s how it’s done in every lab across the country.”

On a deeper level, the structure of modern medicine can discourage examination of complex disorders.

“One way to think of it is that there’s quite a bit of cross talk between the immune system and the nervous system,” Banfield said. “But there isn’t a lot of cross talk between psychiatrists and immunologists and infectious disease doctors. The way we’ve compartmentalized specialties contributes to our difficulty in dealing with problems like this.”

Down the road

It’s hard to say yet which pattern the Morgellons phenomenon will follow. Will it be the next Lyme disease, validated by the medical community? Or will its victims reside in diagnostic purgatory forevermore? Medicine is full of illnesses that sounded like psychological ailments at first but are now linked to invasive pathogens.

Ulcers are caused by spirochetes, not stress. Syphilis is a bacterial infection that reaches the brain, not a kind of insanity. Tuberculosis is another infectious disease, not the psychosomatic illness it was first thought to be.

But while these stories become bits of medical lore, the stories of the patients who were caught in the middle of the confusion are rarely told. Mary Leitao says she never wanted to be an activist. “I’m just a scared mother,” she says. And she wants an answer, whatever it is, soon.

Not long after Drew became symptomatic, his two older siblings, Jeremy, 16, and Samantha, 17, started exhibiting signs of it, too. Samantha is plagued by cognitive problems, fatigue and joint pain. She was once in the gifted program; but now, in her senior year of high school, just started homebound instruction. Jeremy also suffers fatigue and some cognitive problems. Drew, now 8, doesn’t seem to be cognitively afflicted, but his skin, she says, is riddled with sores and scars.

There are other families in which more than one person suffers from the symptoms, says Leitao. But rather than see that as an indication of the disease’s infectious nature, the medical community has labeled it “folie a famille” (madness of the family). They have, she says, an explanation for everything. [link]
