We all have heard and read a lot about the great economic crisis, in the past few months. It has either affected us directly or a close friend, relative or a person in known circle. It has created a huge ripple effect.

Real Girls, Real Pressure

Self-esteem has become a national crisis. Many little girls have a negative image about their body. They are disturbed and depressed by the way they feel about their body, looks, performance in school and relationships. Many self-hate themselves. These negativity pull down their self-esteem very much. So they start engaging in harmful and destructive behavior that can leave a lasting imprint on their lives.

Most common dangerous behaviors of girls with low self esteem:

• Eating disorder – starving, refusing to eat or over-eating and throwing up when feeling badly about themselves
• Bullying
• Smoking or drinking
• Talking badly about themselves
• Injuring themselves

Young girls need proper guidance and support.

The good news is that if parents and other role models are willing to create a steady conversation of encouragement, honesty and openness it can definitely help girls gain confidence and reach their full potential.

If we spend time giving girls new ways to think about beauty, body image and self-esteem it can make a real difference.

"The Women" Review

The Women is one movie of a rare kind. It is for women acted full and full by women. It would steal the hearts of all women. Every woman would definitely relate to any particular character in the movie. The storyline and the characterization are handled very well.

It is basically about friendship interwoven with all emotions. Mary is the lead role in the film. Meg Ryan has lived as Mary. Her performance is simply flawless.

Story – There are 4 close friends – Mary, Sylvie, Alex and Edie. Mary, the heroine is a fashion designer, wife of a famous Wall Street stockbroker, Steven Haines. Sylvie is a fashion magazine editor. Alex is an essayist while Edie plays as a caring mom in her fifth pregnancy.

These 4 friends meet, greet, gossip and share their emotions. They have a long time friendship. Mary works as a fashion designer for her father as well as devotes herself to family, cooking, gardening and charity works.

Mary invites her friends for a benefit luncheon. On the way to Mary’s house, Sylvie gets her manicure done at Saks. While trying to keep her client entertained, the manicurist tells about an affair between the perfume salesgirl and a Wall Street big shot which happens to be Mary’s husband.

Sylvie gets really disturbed to know about this. She is confused with emotional conflict whether to tell or not to tell Mary about this affair. Finally she lets it out to Edie and eventually to Alex. Somehow Mary also comes to know about this through the same manicurist by a twist of events.

Mary seeks her mom for help. Her mom sounds very knowledgeable and practical. She advises to get away from Steven for a while and make him think Mary is doing something incredibly interesting without him. So she invites Mary and her daughter Molly to her cottage.

Mary decides to brush it under the carpet and act to Steven as if nothing happened. But it doesn’t take long for the situation to go out of hand and they part. Mary laments and starts hating herself. Sylvie also betrays Mary in a career threatening situation. Mary feels so lost…

The way she overcomes these choking hardships and comes out in flying colors is the rest of the story…..

Several scenes are handled very realistically in the film. The friends meeting the perfume girl in Saks, cat fight in the lingerie store, graphic illustration of window shopping, Mary’s dialogue while eating butter dipped in cocoa powder, one on one conversation between Sylvie and the little girl are noteworthy.

Some lines are catchy – “I want a Pill to make love go away!”,” I am the man I want to marry “,”Florists and manicurist know everything”.

Overall it was an emotional comedy drama. Thanks to Dove for sponsoring 2 movie tickets to “The Women”. Dove has sponsored a gift bag with beauty products to encourage our support for its noble cause.

The bag is in brown color. Brown is all moms’ favorite color. Whites attract dirt just like magnet, black is too common, bored of seeing pink all the time on daughters, green, yellow and orange are very seasonal, light colors invite stains…….So moms love brown.

Dove has understood moms’ choice well. The bag matches well with my favorite outfits.

Under Pressure

Girls today are under more pressure than ever.

They want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance.

The books, magazines, TV shows, commercials show them the fake made up beauty. Young girls are forced to make-believe the “Picture Perfect Beauty”. Actually there is nothing like a “Perfect Beauty”.

After all, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. It’s the high self-esteem and confidence that carry & present out the beauty in anybody. Isn’t it?

Long hair or short hair, dark skin tone or fair, with braces or specks, with pimples or freckles…..it doesn’t matter. What matters most is what you think you are. Do young girls today think they are beautiful? Sadly, a majority don’t. They relate beauty with the cute looking fairies, flawless princess or gorgeous thin tall super models or actress with full make-ups. Is this what beauty is all about?

Come on, wait a second and take a look at this clipping.

Is this the beauty our young girls yearn for?

Busy with the 1001 chores that need to be completed……a Mom forgets one very important thing. Yes, she forgets to laugh. She forgets to laugh her heart out.

Maybe hardly she gets a good reason to laugh. Of course, she smiles for the baby’s milestone crosses, kid’s A+ and trophies. But how long has it been that she laughed out loud & light-heartedly without any stress? Looonnnnggggggg time ago.

Angry Daughter

Daughters are such emotional & sentimental sweet hearts. They need constant reassurance of love and lots of appreciation. They thrive on unlimited praises.

Come on…..Moms can’t talk Goody-Goody always. Moms vent out sometimes…….OK OK many times. Daughters are too sensitive to take it light-heartedly. They get angry in a jiffy. They make a long face, sob, sulk, hide and what not. They are extremely strong willed. One second they are very sweet and cooperative, and then the next moment they may suddenly turn very angry and defiant. The smallest thing tends to set them off.

A small funny comment, throwing away a girly pinky stuff, comparing with others, praising their pals, remarking on studies, not believing their self-knit stories, paying no interest to their imaginary fairy world, criticizing their looks all these are triggers to their anger. Once any one of them is triggered daughters would sulk instantly.

It takes a long time to cool them. Moms can’t neglect their sulk. It hurts. It makes Moms guilty. A verbal fight or a temper tantrum is far better than sulking. It sends out a harsh message. You know what it is ……

Moms must understand that daughters’ sulking is not a conspiracy on their part. They are simply doing what argumentative strong willed children do. These children tend to push the limits further, test harder, resist longer, use more drama, all more than the verbally efficient child. It is just a way of expressing themselves.

After all, they are imitating us……We agree on it, isn’t it?

Affirmation of Love

Braiding your daughter’s hair can be a bonding, caring act remembered with warmth by both of you. I love pretty hair. Hair that has been combed smoothed and placed in just the right way. I love seeing little girls looking pretty with matching clips and hair-bands.

I enjoy doing the hair of my 2 lovely daughters. It is two to three minutes just us. I smoothly comb out their hair and play with it and we talk. It is very intimate to me. I have had some of the best conversations with my daughters while styling their hair in the mornings.

We come up with a different style every day. With every style I feel she gets an all new fresh look. With her sitting close to me and her soft lock of hair in my hand, I feel that’s the MOMENT. A warm feeling spreads within.

We moms are very eager and curious about our daughters’ hair right from pregnancy. Would it be thick or fine or curly? We keep wondering. Baby combs! When my daughters were babies my brother used to brush their tiny hairs with soft baby combs. They enjoy the soothing feel. What a lovely way of bonding!

Moms do every step in hair care with great care. My grandma and mom would show their care right from the selection of the best ingredients to do the home-made hair wash powder called shikakai.

Shikakai is referred to as "fruit for the hair." It has a naturally mild pH, and it gently cleans the hair without stripping it of natural oils. Indians use shikakai as a natural hair wash to promote hair growth and strengthen hair roots.

Though I don’t do it right from the scratch like them, I have take up the love for hair grooming from them. Moreover, it’s a fortune handed down generation after generation.

In our family tree,

we all are blessed with lustrous long hair

and blessed with loving mom who is a pro in fixing hair.
As Moms, we enjoy :-
1. Giving Shampoo bath to her at regular intervals.

2. Being very careful nothing hurts her eyes & she remains calm.

3. Drying her hair by untangling every single strand.

4. Smelling the heavenly fresh scent from her washed hair.

5. Praising her how she looks gorgeous in free hair.

6. Dressing up and selecting matching clips, hair bands from her ever added collection.

7. Styling her hair with lots of adjustments.

8. Waiting anxiously to read her expression when she sees in mirror soon after.

9. Taking all pride when she smiles at your work of art.

10. Doing minor corrections when something comes off.

11. Repeating steps 1 to 10 until we are lucky enough.

Ya, we don’t know how long this unique feeling of braiding our daughters hair may last. Very soon they would become big girls to take care of it all by themselves.

So I make it a point, that each stroke of comb is an affirmation of my love for her and it is not just another chore.

In my hometown India, braiding daughters hair is very special. In these snaps, we can easily feel the love between mother and daughter. It is a common form of socializing.

Sometimes when I am drained out of the busy day's work I sit & let loose my hair to relax.

My toddler starts combing my hair. It is really wordless. I close my eyes and feel treasured.

Stress Busters

Moms sometime feel too stressed out. We are out of balance. We end up feeling depleted and bad. It is at these times that "Nurturing" plays an important role.

Nurture yourself. Nurture someone or something else. It makes us feel good.

Nurturing things to do

Bring your loved one a cold drink on a hot day or a hot drink on a cold day.
Send a card to a friend.
Spend a day outdoors alone or with friends.
Make your friend dinner for her birthday.
When your friend calls in a crisis, be there to listen.
Tell your sister how great you think she is.
Turn on your favorite music while you cook dinner.
Let somebody else cook your dinner.
Plan to spend a day alone with each of your kids.
Give or get a massage.
Remind yourself that you are a wonderful person.
Ask somebody else to tell you what your 5 best qualities are.
Plan a celebration for your own birthday. :)
Sit and do nothing and think about whatever comes into your mind.
Paint a painting, tell a story, sing a song.
Keep a journal of your life.
Give your loved one something you know he or she wants/needs or would enjoy having.
Talk to people and tell them your thoughts about life.
Call all of your friends or family members and ask them how they are. Listen to them and really understand what they feel and think.

To be nurturing sometimes requires making hard choices. We have many competing demands on our time.

The library books well past the due date, stains on the carpet, dust sitting on the blinds, jammed printer, soap scum in bathtubs, unchecked letter box ......endless.

All these can wait. We need to be charged up. We women hold the chord of the rhythm of our family. Any thought clutter of our mind or imbalance can shake the harmony of our entire family.

My younger daughter is learning Alphabets. I am learning Alphabets too. The ABC....s of Parenting. I love learning it afresh everyday.

A is for Acceptance.
Life deals us all sorts of cards. Accept what you can't change and move on.

B is for Boundaries.
Boundaries aren't barriers, they are safe limits within which kids can explore and develop.

C is for Communication.
Keep talking and listening to your kids and to each other.

D is for Determination.
Focus on achieving your positive goals and make sure you follow through.

Go the extra mile in everything you do and you will be rewarded with results.

Love doesn't need a Reason

How many times have we asked our spouse, "Why do you love me ?", "Give me a reason ....", "What do you like in me the most ?" etc....

I am sure, everyone of us has asked these questions at one point or the other. We love to hear the reasons from them. We love to know why we are being loved if at all.

Maybe this is the most difficult question ever for men. They laugh sheepishly and end up saying something .....to our least expectation.

Actually "True Love doesn't need a Reason".

Some people never understand.

Once a lady when having a conversation with her lover, asked:

Lady : Why do you like me..? Why do you love me? Man : I can't tell the reason.. but I really like you..

Lady : You can't even tell me the reason... how can you say you like me? How can you say you love me?

Man : I really don't know the reason, but I can prove that I love U.

Lady : Proof ? No! I want you to tell me the reason. My friend 's boyfriend can tell her why he loves her but not you!

Man : Ok.ok!!! Erm...

because you are beautiful,
because your voice is sweet,
because you are caring,
because you are loving,
because you are thoughtful,
because of your smile,
because of your every movements.

The lady felt very satisfied with the man's answer.

Unfortunately, a few days later, the Lady met with an accident and went in comma.

The Guy then placed a letter by her side,
here is the content:

Darling, Because of your sweet voice that I love you...Now can you talk? No! Therefore I cannot love you.

Because of your care and concern that I like you..Now that you cannot show them, therefore I cannot love you.

Because of your smile,because of your every movements that I love you..

Now can you smile? Now can you move?No, therefore I cannot love you...

If love needs a reason, like now,There is no reason for me to love you anymore.

Does love need a reason?

NO ! Therefore,
I still LOVE YOU...

Immature love says: 'I love you because I need you.'

Mature love says:'I need you because I love you.'

Lets put an end to our never ending chain of questions as "Why do u love me, darling...? Give me at least one valid reason....Just one, whatever it may be. Whether its because of my this or that or blah blah blah.....". By this time, I am sure your spouse would have snoozed off zzzzzzzzzz......

Kids pamper me. Every other day they thrill me with ......

* Small bunch of roadside flowers collected with love

* Bits of love notes stuck all around the house

* Cool lemonades prepared with wrong proportion of sugar & lemon juice may turn out too sweet or too sour but they are in right proportion of love & care

* Applying Nail Polish for me with Stucco Effect

* Feeding me with their leftover cookies, lollipops and what not

* Taking my side whenever we have a family tussle

* Considering myself to be their all in all problem solver like the bug killer, the jammed jar opener, the lego tower builder, the big bubble blower, the high shelves things reacher etc...Mom is their Super Hero

* Instant watery eyes when I am hurt or in pain

* Believing strongly "Mom Knows". Mom knows the spelling of everything, how to win more tickets in Chuck-e-cheese, how to eat icecream without dripping...

* Sensing my emotions too fast like a robotic wonder with powerful sensors

* Singing my own crooked versions of lullaby for me

* Hugs & Kisses whenever I feel unsecured

Nowadays most of us are Global Citizens. We are Globetrotters. We travel around the circumference of Globe. Every country has its own personal touch. Every country's attitude, flavors, weather, political gimmicks, cozy places, rich history, proud culture lingers in our soul. The more we are away from homeland, the more we love it. But still, the chance to compare & contrast the patriotic feelings in different countries is really great.

I love india, my homeland. But I feel I miss Singapore, all the more. The most precious chapters of my Life were written in Singapore. My daughters crawled around, explored in walkers, learnt to walk, had their every bumps & falls, talked in gibberish language, had their first birthdays.........all in Singapore. Singapore reminds me of all baby stuff. It reminds me of tiny booties, floral bibs, flavored pacifiers, baby toys and all sweet things.....We are sentimentally attached to Singapore. Count on us Singapore !

Ready Set Learn! is one of the wonderful TV shows for Kids. I bet your kids will love it. Moreover even parents get too sentimentally addicted to the cute characters in it like Paz, Wilbur, Meteor etc...

Wilbur

Wilbur, a preschool reading show is the recent obsession of all toddlers. Wilbur the calf and his cast of barnyard friends will just steal your hearts. The main intention of the show is to promote book reading habit. It surely will develop an early love for reading and books.

Wilbur can be found daily on daily on Discovery Kids Channel (8am PST/11am EST) and TLC (6:30am C/MST & 7:30am EST).

It's repetitive enough to reinforce the idea in kids, at the same time without mind-numbing the adults. Same story is read more than once with different words to enable kids to think differently.

Its a show too good for your kids to miss.

Paz

Paz is a 5 year old Penguin boy who has a big imagination. His mom Big Penguin is never far away from the advice and support that Paz needs. Every loving mother will identify herself in the character of Big Penguin. Paz has a natural enthusiasm to explore everything just like our dear darlings !
