Body Piercing and Tatoos

When my oldest grandson came home with his first body piercing I was mortified. Then over the next few years the number of piercings increased.

Of course I need not have worried. As he grew older the piercings gradually disappeared as he matured and removed the studs and rings. Now he is almost piercing free. He occasionally wears a small stud in his tongue but thankfully I am seeing it less often.

Now my middle grandson can't wait until he is able to get his first tattoo and I am dreading the day. Now I realise the body piercings were preferable as they could be removed but a tattoo is forever.

When I was a child I remember going to the movies and seeing jungle films with native men with a bone in their nose or a plate inserted in their lip. Then, of course there were the movies of the South Sea Islanders with their tribal tattoos and I can't help wondering if our children are returning to these tribal ways.

The news is often full of gangs of young people rioting or generally causing havoc and I wonder if all this comes from the society we have now created.

With both parents working and smaller families together with the nuclear family these children are banding together and defacing their bodies in an unconscious effort to return to the tribal ways of the past. Is it a way of finding the companionship and support that comes with being a part of a large united tribe.

Perhaps the proverb "It takes a village to raise a child" is true and we as a society have really lost what was good and valuable in our lives.

BELIEVE IN YOUR DREAMS

"Every goal that has ever been reached began with just one step....and the belief that it could be attained." These words were written by Jason Blume. It is a philosphy that we should all be trying to teach to our children. It is important that every child is secure in the knowledge that they can achieve the things they want in life and fulfill their ambitions and their dream.

All too often I see children who can't even see their own self worth. They believe that life has no promise for them and I want to convince tham that their dreams really can come true if they are prepared to work hard with persistence and determination.

As Jason Blume says "When the end of the journey seems impossible to reach, all you need to do is take one more step. Stay focused on your goal and remember that each small step will bring you a little closer."

He goes on to say that when things get tough and you feel like you will never make it then you should "look deep inside your heart and you will find strength you never knew you had."

I wish I had learned this lesson when I was young and passed it on to my children. Now I hope to pass this on to my three wonderful grandsons.

BULLYING MUST STOP

We are all aware of bullying in schools and the long term affect this can have on a person. We are also aware of the difficulties that the school authorities have in stamping it out. The child being bullied feels they cannot complain to a teacher because the situation will probably just get worse if the do.
Some of these young victims take their own lives, others quit school as soon as their old enough and most of them have lost confidence in themselves and find it hard to get a job or to cope with the common hurdles that life throws at them.
The problem of bullying is not just happening in schools it is also happening in the workplace and for a young person in their first job this can be just as devastating as schoolyard bullying and in some instances even worse.
A young seventeen year old I know was offered a job when he was still at school. There was the promise of an apprenticeship in twelve months time and there was also a contract which stated he would get a monthly bonus if he achieved a certain amount of work in the month. Because he knew jobs were not easy to get and apprenticships even harder to find he decided to leave school and take the job.
The monthly bonus was never paid even though he achieved his goal every month and the apprenticeship was an empty promise that the company had no intention of keeping. This young man was subjected to daily bullying by his supervisor, an older man who should have been mentoring and training him in the job but instead was constantly criticising him. The criticism was personal and degrading and had nothing to do with the work the boy was doing.
The teenager is a very quiet boy who was always taught to respect his elders and he was quite powerless to stand up for himself against the daily abuse that was meted out to him by this older man. Eventually the boy was so demoralised and depressed he was unable to continue working and had to resign. He was left feeling he was a complete failure and withdrew into himself. He was the tenth employee in the year to leave because of the level of workplace bullying.
Although there are laws against workplace bullying there are still many toxic bosses out there who can emotionally destroy adults working under them so what hope has a teenager got in his first job?
I hope that anyone who is working for a bully will be strong enough to cope with it and not be damaged by it because it seems no one is able to stop it happening.   I also hope this teenage boy will eventually regain his confidence and self esteem and be able to come to terms with what has happened, put this experience behind him and find a workplace that does not allow this to happen to their staff.

SLEEPING UNDER THE STARS

I have just arrived home from my very first camping trip, delighted with the experience and eager to go again soon. I spent the weekend with a wonderful couple who have been camping since their children were young and are now sharing their camping trips with their adult children and their grandchildren.
When so many families are troubled by unruly children or teenagers they can't handle it was refreshing to spend a weekend with such a happy well adjusted family group. Three generations sitting around a campfire talking, joking and simply enjoying each others company. The entire family pitching in to set up camp, cook the meals and to clean up afterwards was such a contrast to what I have seen in many families.
When it was time to pack up to go home even the smallest members of the group pitched and helped. The smallest member was just three and he happily helped his sister who is not yet five pack up the toys and carry things to the car. Two of the older children aged six and eight were happy to make the toast for breakfast over the campfire and help with the washing up.
The grandparents of the group told me that when their children were young they would always take them camping because most camp sites were free and as there was not a lot of money for them to spend too much it was an ideal holiday or weekend getaway for all of them.
If the closeness of this family and the behaviour of the children is any guide then camping is something every family should try to do. Even though there are very few free campsites anymore and the initial cost of tents bedding and cooking utensils for camping may be a little expensive, it would not be as expensive as taking the famile to a resort or renting a beach house. Campsites are still quite inexpensive and the bonding of a family on a camping weekend is worth every cent of what you pay.
For me sitting around the campfire in the evening was relaxing in a way I had never really experienced before and during the night I was surprised how clear and bright the stars were. Something you will only see when you are away from all the city lights. I really wish I had done this when my children were young.

DONT UNDERMINE YOUR HAPPINESS

All too often we seem to go out of our way to undermine our happiness. We set our sights on things that are unobtainable instead of being happy and grateful for the things we have. Instead of being thankful for the things we have we dwell on the things we don't have.
This often leads us into another thing that undermines our happiness, debt. Debt will drain your happiness away and it is something to avoid whenever possible.
Debt leads to stress which can impact on your health and so the cycle begins. Your health is very important to your happiness so look after it.
Helping others is always a good way to make you feel good about yourself. The act of giving makes us all feel happy and personally I get more pleasure from giving than receiving.
Exercise and fresh air will really lift your spirits so take a walk in a park and enjoy feeling close to nature.
There are so many things that undermine our happiness and we all need to be aware of those things and what steps to take to avoid them and most important of all, teach those things to our children.

Take care of yourself and most of all be happy, but remember happiness comes from withinand we are all responsible for our own happiness.

We have all heard of Facebook and many parents are not quite sure about their children being on it. They worry about predators posing as children or maybe, they just don't really know anything about Facebook.

Facebook is one of the fastest growing social network for people of all ages but, in particular, teenagers have taken to it in droves. Teenagers are chatting online with people from all over the world and this is a wonderful thing for them. They often have hundreds of online friends that they are never likely to meet face to face.

Kids and Christmas

Here it is! That time of the year when the kids drive you crazy with the "I want Santa to bring me....". That fat jolly man in the red suit has a lot to answer for doesn't he? I know it is small comfort but it only comes once a year....but then so do their birthdays and Easter. Of course you can't count Halloween....or can you? It is another day when you have to dig deep for costumes and treats.

OK, are you depressed yet? I know how hard it can be when you have a couple of teens to buy for. They really want it all and then some don't they?

All any of us can really do is take a deep breath and dive in. My children have grown up and gone forth and had children of their own and now I have several teens to buy for so things really can get worse. I love them all but Christmas does become expensive.

Litter Louts

How aware are your children of the urgency to do something about our troubled environment? Do you teach them to dispose of their litter correctly and to recycle anything that can be recycled? If all parents are doing this then why do I see litter & graffiti marring the beauty of some of our lovely towns?

I recently moved to a new town with tree lined streets and beautiful parks and gardens. There are lovely old buildings preserved for our and future generations. This town does not have a river but the tiny stream that runs through it has been turned into a beautiful feature with landscaping and walking paths and man made ponds created by low dam walls along the stream. Even the storm water drains have been turned into scenic feature with landscaping & damming. By using storm water drains they have been able to create a wonderful bird habitat where families can enjoy our wonderful bird life.

You can imagine my disappointment and, yes, my anger when I went to my public library and noticed that the lovely water feature beside it had been used by some thoughtless and stupid idiots as a place to throw their rubbish.

There it was, shaded picnic tables in the landscaped park, water feature designed to cascade over a low wall after rain and the top pond was full of the plastic bottles, aluminium cans & cardboard takeaway containers of those intellectually challenged, half-witted people who have lost any intelligence they may have been born with. Most of what ended up in that water feature was recyclable.

What hope has our world got when these idiots are getting away with such destructive and selfish behaviour?
Did their parents teach them about the environment & the importance of recycling or are they imitating the behaviour of the people they grew up with?

Every parent must teach their children to take care of our planet if it is to be saved from the damage humans have already done to it, so please, mum and dad and grandparents - teach your children well and always set them a good example to follow.

Laughter Helps

We've all heard it; laughter is the best medicine and yes it is but sometimes you have to laugh or you would just sit down and cry and that doesn't do anyone any good does it.

When a family is visited by ASD there is not a great deal to laugh about, is there? When a family is blessed with three beautiful boys and they are all diagnoses as having ASD any laughter left in us tends to be difficult to find.

That is what is happening in my family. I am the grandmother of these three beautiful boys and I watch my two children trying to cope with the more challenging behaviours ot their boys and I really want to cry. Then I realise how very special these boys are to all of us, how blessed we are that they are physically well.

Their behaviours may be extremely difficult at times but there are many parents and grandparents out there coping with children who are disabled in far worse ways than my grandsons and I realise how lucky we are.

Parents who are dealing with a child who has withdrawn completely into Autism, children who have been severely disabled with Cerebral Palsy and parents who are watching a tiny child battle a life threatening illness like cancer, are far worse off than my family and my heart goes out to them.

Every day I count my blessings and am thankful for my three wonderful healthy grandsons whom I adore and I think of all those other children who are not so well off. I guess my point is that no matter how bad you have it there is always someone out there who has it worse and if we can laugh in the face of whatever adversity we have to live with then our burden won't be quite so heavy.

School Expenses

If you are like a lot of parents getting your child back to school can be a financial strain. Parents these days probably never knew a totally free school system but I did.

When I went to school the only cost was for uniforms and a text book fee that allowed us to keep the text books we needed for the entire year. If the books were returned at the end of the year in good condition there were no extra charges. This was an excellent and inexpensive system but I wonder how it would work today.

I remember treating my text books like gold. I would not have dared make a mark in them for fear my parents would have to pay for it at the end of the year. Would the majority of children today feel that way?

I love kids but sometimes their lack of respect for property is something I don't understand. Is it because parents are giving them far too much and so they don't really value anything? Perhaps parents are too busy to instill in their children respect for property; their own or someone elses.

It seems we are losing the old fashioned values of the past and I for one miss them. Do you?

Burnt Offerings

Now I am not one to brag but when I got started in the kitchen I could ruin just about anything. The best steaks I could turn to charcoal in a hearbeat. My kids called the oven "Mum's crematorium". Is it any wonder they don't live at home anymore? Ungrateful little wretches.

One thing I am really proud of though is how white my children's teeth always were. Of course they always said it was from the amount of charcoal I fed them when they were growing up and even though I hate to admit it....they were probably right.

In my own defence I never had any decent cookwear (that's my excuse and I am sticking to it). Most of it came from the things other people had thrown out. Thin aluminium pots that boiled dry and burnt everything before you could say "That smells funny", didn't help my cooking skills at all. Baking trays that were warped, scratched cake tins, if someone could damage something they would, and then they gave it to me.

I once overheard a conversation between two women I thought were my friends. They were talking about getting rid of their old, worn out cookwear and one said "Oh just give it to Maggie, she won't know the difference".

Now that my stomach has begun to rebel against years of abuse I have decided I am going to invest in some really good cooking utensils. I'm sure that will improve what I can produce in the kitchen and if it doesn't? I will have to start eating frozen dinners and visit my friends at meal times more often.

Indigo Children

If you are like me when you first saw the term indigo children you probably wondered "What on earth is wrong with them?" or "Why are they blue?". The fact is they are neither blue nor sick.
Indigo children , according to Wickipedia, are children who are believed to represent a higher state of evolution. Originally indigo children were believed to be more empathetic and creative but some people now believe these children have paranormal abilities and can read minds.
The term Indigo Children was generated by Nancy Tappe and first emerged in 1982 in Understanding Your Life Through Color, a book by Nancy Tappe.
The beliefs surrounding indigo children was later made popular by Lee Carol and Jan Tober in their bookThe Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived.
According to Wickipedia many children who are considered by their parents to be indigo children are later diagnosed as being ADHD.
Skeptic, Robert Todd Caroll, has said that parents would rather label their child indigo than to accept that the child is in any way imperfect. They see the diagnosis of ADHD as an imperfection.

Immunisation For Children

So much has been written and said about immunisation for children and the risks involved that some parents are often too afraid to get immunisation for fear of side effects. To my knowledge it has never been proven conclusively that immunisation has any long lasting adverse effects on most children.
Recently a young child died shortly after being immunised against influenza. When the results of the Autopsy were released there was no conclusive evidence that the death was related to the flu shot. It seems that there was no conclusive results on what the cause of death was.
It is a terrible dilemma for parents trying to decide what is the right thing to do for their young child. All parents are very aware that if the child contracts an illness like Diptheria, Whooping Cough, Measles, Chicken Pox etc there is a very high morality rate and a very good chance their child will not survive.
Now, unfortunately, they are faced with the possibility that the Flu shots may also put their child at risk. Add to that the risk to the child if they are not vaccinated and you can understand how difficult the decision is for any parent.
If you are a parent agonising about what path to take then I would strongly advise you to talk to your doctor and get the facts. I think this is the only safe and sensible way to make a decision about your child's needs.

Eating The Old Fashioned Way For Good Health

Have you ever wondered why so many children are now being diagnosed with ADD and ADHD as well as other behavioural problems? Why there is also an increasing number of children with Asthma an allergies? I am now a healthy, fit, trim, fairly senior citizen. I am alert and , touch wood, have no sign of dementia or memory loss and I attribute my Good health to my diet when I was growing up.
These days it is sometimes impossible to have a garden or your own hens but there are some good food outlets that sell natural and organic foods just like we ate all those years ago. It does not contain preservatives or fertilizers and it is not genetically modified, it is simply good food and it goes a long way to ensuring your childs Good health

Where Have All The Children Gone

What on earth is happening to our young peopl? Police are concerned about the gangs that are emerging on our streets. These kids seem to be fueled with alcohol and rage and the level of violence is frightening.
Only recently a gang of drunken out of control teens set upon an off duty policeman and bashed him at the Gold Coast.
This is the sort of behaviour we see in the US but now it is here in Australia. Has our society lost control of our children? If we have we must ask why. Why are these kids so out of control?
It is far too easy to point the finger at bad parenting but is this really all there is to it? Are the parents of today so busy trying to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table that they have neglected the basic parenting of their children.
I am not a deeply religious person but I have to wonder if the decline in the behaviour of so many youngsters is directly related in the decline in church attendence? When we were growing up going to church on Sunday with our parents was something that was considered normal. Now there are very few young people in the churches. Many of these youngsters are nursing a hangover from binge drinking the night before.
If we do not step up and say enough is enough kids and start coming down hard on these out of control teens then what will become of our society? We cannot afford to let so many youngsters lose their way and not do something to stop them. Our children are our future and we need to do all we can to ensure the actions of some does not destroy the future security of many.

Get Help For Your Kids

I have long held the belief that some children will never learn much at school. If they are not interested they fall behind and they are forgotten. They get lost in the system; pushed up throught the grades regardless of their poor achievement until they are finally dumped out into a world they are ill prepared for.
Some of these kids go back to learning when they are older. They go to TAFE or embark on a mature age learning program and many become very successful. The tragedy is when these kids become locked into the poverty cycle because they do not have the reading and writing skills they need to find employment in reasonably well paying employment.
I believe there should be special programs in place for these kids within the school system but the lack of teachers and the overcrowded classrooms make this almost impossible. There are schools outside the regular school system that these kids can go to and get help but usually by the time they are accepted they have given up and are not even bothering to go to school.
There is an old saying that "the sqeaky wheel gets the grease" and nowhere is this more true than when it is applied to helping your child. Don't just ask, thump the desk and DEMAND that your child gets the help he needs. Make enought noise that someone will get sick of you and do something just to get rid of you. If it helps your child it's worth it isn't it?
Don't let yor child get lost in the system, stand up and demand help. That child will thank you when he looks back later in life.

Helping Troubled Teens

When your children get to those teenage years all the problems you had with them adjusting to school, teething, all the scrapes bruises and bumps will pale into insignificance. Now you have to deal with them bringing home a rag-tag bunch of misfits that only a mother could love (and their mother probably feels the same way about your little darling), dealing their first love and the inevitable heart break that follows and what seems to be never ending puberty. Your sweet cuddly bundle of joy has become a sweaty, smelly, grunting teen who seems to have lost the ability to communicateas well as all interest in hygiene

We all know this will pass but it is a time of deep concern for many parents. They are entering into the age when they are most at risk of being seriously injured, turning to drugs or alcohol or getting to know the local police by their first names.

Yes I know, that information doesn't help much when you are at the coal face, but at least there is help out there for you and your teens and maybe you can take comfort from the knowledge that you are definitely not alone.

You Gotta Love them Anyway

When you have three grandsons you tend to hope one at least will be a little bit academically inclined but not my three. They are lovely charming young lads with absolutely no interest in school or anything to do with school. One of them doesn't mind sports day but the other two would just as soon sit under a tree and watch the world go by.
So how does anyone inspire a young boy to take and interest in his own education? If I knew the answer to that I would can it and sell it for a fortune. Can't you just see it? Mums and Dads (and grandparents) at their wits end lining up around the block to buy the magic formula.
It seems girls are more academically inclined than boys. Boys would rather be down the river fishing or riding their skate boards or bikes and I can't seem to find the answer to why this is so.
I just accept my three boys the way they are, sigh deeply and try to convince myself it isn't my side of the family they inherited these genes from so therefore it must be from the "other side".

Action Comic#1 was published in June 1938 and is considered by experts to be the worlds most valuable comic book. They have valued it at $126,000.

"It's the Holy Grail of comic books," said comic expert Stephen Fishler (Reuters).

When you consider the person selling the comic bought it in 1950 for 35c when he was only nine years old you would have to wonder why you ever threw those kids comics away. Apparently this was the very first super hero comic book and all the other super hero's followed Superman onto the market.

Perhaps somewhere in the back of a cupboard or in a box in your garage you have a comic book that is worth far more than you ever thought possible.......or did you throw them all away.

I know The Simpsons has a huge following but I am not one of them. My family have decided that this is due to some kind of mysterious and serious disability but I just cannot see what everyone else in my family thinks is so funny about The Simpsons. It seems to me that there are a lot of people like me who don't watch The Simpsons but with it's track record I now have to admit I must be in the minority, otherwise why is it doing so well?

I was surprised to learn that The Simpsons had won 24 Emmy Awards and was the longest running animated series on prime time television in the US. Those of us who don't love The Simpson will just have to accept that we are very much a minority and admit that maybe we are missing something.
