From January 2006 through the end of 2010, Linden Lab, the creators of Second Life, managed a youth-only version called Teen Second Life. At the Second Life Community Convention in Boston last week, Linden Lab CEO Philip Rosedale announced that they were going to be closing the "Teen Grid," moving the 16 and 17-year olds to the Main Grid, and at some point bringing in younger Teen Grid members.

Barry Joseph of Global Kids wrote a "eulogy" of sorts about the Teen Grid, which you can read and respond to here.

Il mio commento è positivo: per progetti educativi anche i 16-17enni delle nostre scuole potranno entrare nella Grid principale (e presto unica) di SecondLife.
L'instabilità delle Grid OpenSim(dove si provavano con enormi difficoltà e lentezze progetti edu per i non 18enni) potrà cedere il passo alla lunga esperienza di secondlife anche se i "notabili" della scuola italiana hanno sempre molte resistenze a dintrodurre "ufficialmente" gli studenti italiani in secondlife per paura delel reazioni di genitori, malpensanti ecc...Chissà se ora sranno più disponibili;)

We’re excited to announce that Philip Rosedale (SL: Philip Linden) will be giving a keynote address on Saturday morning at the Second Life Community Convention! Philip recently returned as interim CEO after Mark Kingdon stepped down in July, and we expect that he’ll address the company’s future direction and Linden Lab’s “return to the basics” of improving the core Second Life experience. In a recent post on the Second Life blogs, Philip talked frankly about addressing Resident’s concerns. “We need to get back to being the first to invent and deliver the solutions that evolve virtual worlds,” said Rosedale, “We are still at the beginning of a huge market.” Rosedale’s speech will be delivered in world and simultaneously webcast to attendees of the Second Life Community Convention in Boston on Saturday morning, August 14th, at 8AM EST/5AM PST.

Non scrivo più dal 21 dicembre?
Beh una ragione c'è! Le vacanze!sono praticamnete cominciate il 22 quando c'è stata la gelata e sono finite giovedì unico giorno di lavoro per ora, solo che venerdì di nuovo vacanza (condizini atmosferiche)..
Insomma lunedì riprendo a lavorare davvero ed a scrivere sui blog.

COMPETITION RULES

1. Open to all
2. Up to ten photographs per person can be submitted. Prizes are awarded for single images.
3. Photographs can be manipulated in photo software
4. Photos must be uploaded to the Pathfinder Islands Group Pool on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/groups/pathfinder_islands/
5. You must send an IM to Adrian Pathfinder in Second Life to notify that you have uploaded your entry
6. You grant full rights to the Institute of Human Development to use your photographs for promoting the Pathfinder Islands and for displaying in the Pathfinder Gallery in SL.
7. The competition will be judged by Adrian Gilpin (Adrian Pathfinder) and his decision is (obviously) quite perfect and tears or tantrums from disappointed photographers will make no difference.
8. Book prizes will be sent by the cheapest possible mail service and may take a while to arrive.
9. We will do our best to co-ordinate a convenient time for the top prize concert to suit JooZz (without whom ... etc) and two finalists, but the final decision about date and time rests with JooZz and Adrian (both from Europe).

[ITA] "Scienza on the road" entra nella quindicesima settimana di attività. Alla fine di dicembre si conclude il primo ciclo del progetto che riprenderà poi a febbraio. Come ogni mese si rinnova la grafica delle locandine. Dopo lo stile rigoroso e minimalista di Zorro Hirvi i nuovi manitesti sono opera di Romis Mazi che ha elegantemente tipizzato la grafica secondo i temi trattati. Eccone una selezione.

Come si fa a piegare la luce? Eleonora Porta ci aiuterà a entrare in una fibra ottica per scoprirlo.
Le fibre ottiche sono utilizzate nelle più recenti applicazioni delle telecomunicazioni. Hanno ottime qualità in termini di velocità di trasmissione e bassa attenuazione dei segnali. Il viaggio di stasera attraverso una fibra ottica ce ne mostrerà i vantaggi e ci farà capire perchè un fascio di luce segue un percorso determinato invece di una line retta.

Today, Monday November 9th, at 1:15 pm SLT (22:15 CET ) we'll meet for "Scienza on the Road" at Piccola Venezia. Eleonora Porta will talk about "Piegare la luce" ("How to bend light").

Can light be bend? And how? Eleonora Porta will help us to get into an optical fiber to find it out.
Optical fibers are used in the most recent technological applications. They have excellent qualities with regard to transmission speed and signal low dimming. Today's journey through an optical fiber will show us its advantages and will let us understand why a light beam follows a certain path rather than a straight line.
The event will be presented by Giovanna Delphin.

Cos’è, dunque, Google Wave?
Definizioni
Ne daremo 4 definizioni:

1.Google Wave — Definizione figa/slogan: è l’email, come se fosse stata inventata oggi, nell’era del Web 2.0 e dei social network;
2.Google Wave — Definizione per imbecilli: una specie di MSN, che ha preso sostanze stupefacenti;
3.Google Wave — Definizione per l’utente medio: Strumento di comunicazione in tempo reale che permette ai suoi partecipanti di lavorare insieme su documenti anche con formattazione non banale, condividere e modificare foto e loro attributi, video, mappe, ottenere updates e notifiche da Twitter, Facebook e altri social network;
4.Google Wave — Definizione per sviluppatori e geek: un’applicazione web secondo lo standard HTML5, open source, che richiede browsers con performance javascript eccezionali (ovvero non Internet Explorer, sorry), supporta estensioni e gadget, dispone già di APIs (application programming interface) che lavorano su due binari: incorporazione (embedding API) su pagine web e blogs, e costruzione di gadgets e robots — che sono, rispettivamente, elementi complementari all’«onda», come una mappa associata ad un luogo inserito nella conversazione, e dei partecipanti meccanici (“robot”) alla conversazione che svolgono tasks e altri compiti particolari secondo il modo in cui sono stati programmati (un esempio è un robot incaricato di creare e contare i voti di sondaggi all’interno dell’onda).

Roberto Ellero confronta la situazione attuale dei video sul Web con i possibili scenari futuri, attraverso esempi in produzione e la comparazione delle tecnologie consolidate Flash-based con le potenzialita' del nuovo elemento Video in HTML5: supporto built-in nei browser come avviene per le immagini, i codec Ogg Theora e H.264, le manipolazioni Javascript, la liberazione dalla dipendenza dai vendor per i plugin. Vengono esaminati pro e contro nelle diverse possibili scelte per l'erogazione in Rete dei video, anche con riguardo all'accessibilita', alla facilita' d'uso nell'authoring e nella postproduzione video, e alle soluzioni per la compatibilita' cross-browser
