After owning this blog for a year, I'm now closing it down. That doesn't mean that I'm vanishing off the blogosphere. Not at all. I've missed interacting with all my cyber friends way too much for that. But I'm ready for a fresh approach to blogging. With that in mind, I've started a new blog. I haven't participated in this meme for a while, and I've really missed it, so here we are back with another FF hosted by Parajunkee & Alison Can Read. The question this week is an interesting one:

Q: What do you hope to accomplish with your blog? Is it to one day become an author yourself, just for fun, maybe get some online attention, or maybe something very different?

To be honest, I'd never even considered owning a blog before I started researching how authors market their books in the 21 century.

That was at the start of 2012 and every guru on the subject insisted that you had to have a blog to get the word out about your books. So, being the lemming I am, I immediately followed suit.

But I didn't want yet another new-author-trying-to-make-it-in-an-overcrowded-market-blog, that was why I let Seth and Erin, my characters from Pledged, write most of the posts. It was my way of establishing them as real living-breathing people, not just characters in a book. Doing that proved to be challenging fun, and I know it has been well received amongst my followers.

Now that Pledged has been launched, I feel we need to share the posts. So while most of them will still be written by Seth and Erin, I also want a say.

Has blogging worked as a marketing tool? Again, to be honest, I don't know. But what I do know is that I've grown to love the contact with other bloggers and the excitement of being part of this magical world. That alone makes it all worthwhile.

So, tell me, why do you blog?

September draws to a close and with it the launch month of:

So how has the launch gone?

For me personally the launch was over-shadowed by the sudden illness and death of my father-in-law Tony. More like a father and best friend, he'd been my writing mentor for years. He was part of the editing team on Pledged, freely offering me his magic with words and descriptions. The book was richer for his effort.

Sadly, he took ill with pneumonia at the beginning of September, by the middle of the month he was gone. His legacy will live on. But, as you can imagine, book launches, marketing, blogging, Facebook pages, and Twitter have taken a back seat in my life this month.

October is now upon us, and it's time for me to regroup and to look to the future. I will be more actively involved on my blog, Facebook page and - with the odd sporadic burst - Twitter. Those who follow me on Twitter will know I'm a pretty useless Tweeter! I still have to get my head around that blue bird.

But for all that I was detached during September, I am aware of the effort and support Pledged was given by all the wonderful bloggers who took part in the three months blog tour and launch. Thank you, each one of you. I really appreciate it.

Now to the final part of the launch. As part of the promotion campaign for Pledged, Swallow Press offered a Kindle Fire draw to the bloggers who took part in the blog tour.

Meet the characters from THE WAKING DREAM

As promised, we’re chatting with three fascinating people today – Dante, Kerran and Ke’arhra from:

Welcome to Today In Shenaya you guys.

As Dante is the commander of the city Illamar, a town surrounded by hostile desert where most of the action takes place, I think it’s only proper that we kick off with him. So Dante, can you give our readers some idea of the size of your town – how many people live there?

Dante: “Seth, It’s a modest city of roughly five thousand people. The city itself is divided into four main sections, with the central square at its heart. Originally it seems they – by that I mean the original builders - meant to have equal sized sections of the city, but it turns out that the northern section is the largest, the southern is the smallest, and the other two are about the same. Geographically each section holds roughly the same amount of territory, but people have come to favor the northern side of the city. The square is full of shops and people flock there all day long. Almost out of the main square is where you'll find the Black Rose Tavern; if you stop in tell Nell I sent you!”

Seth: Will do, as I hear the food is great. Which brings me to my next question. You’ve been cut off from the rest of the world for five years. How did it feel to be so isolated?

Dante: “At first I wasn't too concerned. But as the years started to go by, our situation was becoming more and more urgent; and we (the council and I) had decided to hide the seriousness of our predicament from the people as much and as long as possible. It was something that weighed heavy on my mind constantly. I never minded being separated from the outer cities. But to be cut off from supplies we had come to rely on was alarming. When you live in a desert, there is only so much you can provide. And when you have a large group of people concentrated in one area, there are many challenges to keeping everyone cared for. It's something I certainly hope I never go through again.”

Seth: A solution came from a most unlikely source – a tribe of pretty scary Desert People you didn’t even know existed. Now, you’re clearly a very level-headed man, how did it feel to be totally overwhelmed by the Desert People’s magic?

Dante: “You said it best - it was overwhelming. That is the first and only time in my life when logic failed me. How does one rationalize magic? You can't! It is what it is and you are completely at its whim. Extremely unnerving experience. And to spend so much time with such powerful people around me, constantly using their power...well, I'm very grateful to be back home in my city where things make sense. I respect the Desert People, I admire them, I hope to be able to call some of them my friends, but I could not live in close proximity to them.”

Seth: *smiling* I kind of don’t blame you! But there was someone in Illamar who reacted quite differently to the Desert People – Kerran.

Kerran: *grins, nodding*

Seth: “Kerran, you’ve an adventurous, almost restless spirit. Didn’t you ever want to leave Illamar to go exploring the world beyond the desert?”

Kerran: *looking surprised* “No. I never had a reason to leave. I didn't like the traders much; they were dirty, always traveling endlessly. Some people, the Commander included, loved listening to their tales from other cities, but that never appealed to me. Until I met Ke'arhra, I thought I was content with my life.”

Seth: *nods* “Yeah. All it takes is one woman to turn the world upside down.”

Kerran: “You’ve got that right.”

Seth: So tell me, although destiny is important to the Desert People, how did you feel when you were thrust into the role of the ‘prophesied one’ without your approval or choice?” *aside to the readers* Anyone who’s read Pledged, will know that when that happened to me, I didn’t react well at all.

Kerran: It was very uncomfortable. I knew they were expecting a hero, and I knew I was going to let them down. It was very confusing, because I actually cared what these strangers thought of me. It was like being in some strange dream. The things I spent most of my life fighting for suddenly didn't matter anymore. For a while it was like there was a stranger living inside me- and that was deeply disturbing.

Seth: *smiling* I think the real motivator was Ke’arhra. Initially you hated her, so if destiny had not intervened would you have chosen to be with her?

Kerran: Right from the moment I first saw her, Ke'arhra was different from any other woman I've ever met. I hated her because, well, she provoked me. She played me. And I really did hate her for that. If she hadn't been so damned irritating I would have been very attracted to her. If we met under different circumstances, I would have pursued her. Given what things were, if destiny hadn't interfered, I think she would have killed me. And I would have died hating her.”

Seth: Okay, this is where I hand over to Erin, ‘cause she’d kill me if I stole this moment from her.

Erin: *ginning*. I’ve got Seth well trained! Hello, Ke’arhra, since reading your story I’ve been dying to know something about you. When you first met Kerran you had very little time for him. Would you have chosen to be with him if destiny had not intervened?

Ke’arhra: *gives Erin a steely look* Based on what I knew of him when I met him, no - I would not have chosen him. I thought he had no part in the prophecy and was therefore useless to me. As arrogant as he was, I would most certainly have killed him. Even knowing it to be Aulani's will, I still resisted and did not want him at first.

JENNIFER FORD

She's the creator of the fantasy The Waking Dream and you can read a review of the book here.

Erin: Jennifer, welcome to our corner of madness. Please tell us a little about yourself. What do you do when you're not writing?

Jennifer: When I’m not writing I can be found working in my garden, playing with photography (I specialize in black and white film photography), playing with my cats, hanging out with my family, and trying to keep up with life. And for the next couple months I will be avidly following the football season!

Erin: *pulls face* Football? Maybe Seth should be doing this interview.

Seth: No Problem! Although I must admit to being more of a basketball player than a footballer. Still, which team do you support?

Erin: *interrupts* Okay, okay. Enough. Back to the topic at hand. Jennifer, how do your characters communicate with you?

Jennifer: *smiling* Later Seth. Okay, Erin. Characters usually talk to me, telling me what they should be doing. If I don’t listen, they start yelling at me, so I try to pay attention as soon as they start talking.

Seth: I like! So your characters really controls your story.

Jennifer: Yes. I just make suggestions. Sometimes they listen, sometimes they don’t. *Erin and Seth share a grin* But it all seems to work out in the end!

Erin: Are you working with some new characters in a new project? And if so, how do your other characters feel about it?

Jennifer: I am working with new characters on a whole other world- and the characters from The Waking Dream obliged me for a while and then they got a bit jealous. They started chattering at me, trying to make their voices louder than the voices of the new characters I was working with. It got very loud for a while!

Seth: I can imagine it would. So how do you handle it when your characters give you a hard time with writer’s block?

Jennifer: I usually take a break and read something completely unrelated by a really great author. That opens the creative pathways back up and I can focus again.

Erin: Did your characters teach you anything when writing their story?

Jennifer: Yes; they did! They taught me that until the story is written, I don’t know what is going to happen or how everyone gets from scene A to scene B. I just have to trust my instincts and let the story tell itself.

Seth: You mean trust your characters' instincts!

Erin: Ignore Seth. Jennifer, do you have any advice for other writers coping with the challenge of characters and stories appearing in their heads?

Jennifer: Write everything down as soon as you can once it comes to you. Don’t try to make sense of it when you’re writing it down- just get it all down. I keep a small notebook with me at all times so I can jot things down wherever I am. I’ve had to stop in the grocery store and write down a few lines! There is magic in the moment; sometimes if I wait then I lose it and have to work to try and get the lines right.

Erin: Is there anything your characters want to say to our readers?

Jennifer: Hmmm, I’m sure they would say something, but they are clamoring over each other to be the one that gets to talk. So they’re all going into separate corners for a time out!

Seth: *aside to Erin* We would never behave like that.

Erin: *whispers* Shush, Seth. They'll hear. So Jennifer, what advice would you give our readers who are also writers to continue in the noble work of providing a voice for characters?

Jennifer: Don’t stop until the story is done. Don’t rush yourself. I always take plenty of time to let the story develop in my head before I try to write anything, I have to let it take root and grow and then I can sit down and visualize what is happening.

Erin: Now for the most important question of the interview.

Who is your favorite book boyfriend?

Jennifer: I think I need more information to answer this. . . What kind of boyfriend?? Are we talking people, wolves, elves, dragons, immortals, etc.? Does it have to be a published book or can it be one I haven’t finished yet? There are so many to choose from . . . Young and innocent vs. older and tainted . . . it’s hard enough for me to pick a favorite book. I’m not sure I could actually pick one favorite book boyfriend. . . *voice trails off*

If you're a regular reader to this blog you'll know we usually review books that resonate in some way with our own story, Pledged. The Waking Dream by Jennifer Ford is no exception.

It also focuses on a lost people as you will see from the Goodreads synopsis:

Cut off from the outside world by a hostile desert full of savage secrets, the city of Illamar must fend for itself. Late one night, Dante Montero, Commander and Ruler of Illamar, is confronted on his own streets by a mysterious woman bearing an ominous message from a dangerous man known only as Rasheim.

Dante and his close friend Kerran, Captain of the Guard, rush to discover the identity of Rasheim and the nature of the threat posed against their city. The closer they get to the truth, the more their worlds begin to fall apart. Both men will have to rely heavily on their friendship as they struggle to comprehend the events happening around them, their past, and even the truth about themselves. They must move quickly and choose wisely, for time is running out as Dante and Kerran discover a secret plot is already underway to destroy their city and kill every last person alive. It seems the answers they so desperately need can only be found in a sequence of dreams, but in a world where nothing is as it seems, even their dreams could turn out to be deadly.

Seth writes. . . Okay, that's the official waffle, now down to what I think.

The Waking Dream is magical fantasy on steroids. I loved it. The story is utterly original, the world building spellbinding, and the characters so defined they leap right off the page.

But be warned, it does get off to a slow start. Don’t let it put you off or you will miss a fantastical – in every sense of the word – read. The slow build up in the beginning is essential for setting the main characters and the overall tone.

It was also cool to read a story seen through the eyes of two guys for a change – Dante and Kerran. Close friends, they both have very different, but equally important missions to fulfill.

Given the title, The Waking Dream, you can expect a lot of dream sequences and you won’t be disappointed. They litter the book, but are so well handled, with such originality, it almost took my breath away. In one crucial part of the book the use of the dream world was pure genius.

Erin writes. . . And for those who are wondering about LOVE, you need to know that it isn’t a romance, although there is a very sensual relationship that develops between Kerran and urgh! I can’t tell because that would be a spoiler of note. Just know that it’s there, adding a spicy twist to the story.

MEET JARED AND SOPHIA

Erin and I'd like to introduce you to Sophia and Jared, two important characters - and close friends of ours - whom you'll meet when you read our book Pledged.

For those who don't know, Pledged is a young adult fantasy adventure filled with time travel, romance, and the meddling of the dead in the affairs of the living. Click the link to read the Goodreads Synopsis.

This pic is a pretty accurate representation of what Sophia and Jared look like. As you can see from the clothes, they lived a long time ago - almost a thousand years, in fact.

Sophia and Jared were soul mates from before they were even born, although you wouldn't think so when you read how they first meet. This is a extract taken from Pledged . . .

Jared nodded at Sophia and Kezeah without any sign of recognition. With two of his Pledged up front and two at their rear, he marched them down the corridor to a flight of stairs. Once at the bottom, he ducked beneath an archway, opening onto to a gloomy, narrow tunnel. Erin, never keen on dark, claustrophobic spaces, took a deep breath and paused.

“C’mon,” Seth said. “The sooner we walk through it, the quicker we get to the other side.”

“What happens if what’s on the other side is even worse?”

“Then you’ll know for sure that the dead guys are leading this expedition,” Seth said, wanting to deny the painful burning in his heart that reconnected him with a cursed Jared. He grabbed Erin’s arm and pulled her into the passage.

They’d taken no more than two tentative steps along the uneven floor when Sophia stopped. “Commander, I am not walking through this snake-hole!”

Jared turned back to look at her. With none of the fear or diffidence Erin and Seth expected from a boy with limited to exposure to girls – especially beautiful ones – he answered, “Of course, my lady. You’re from Norin, where I understand you live in grass huts.” He gave a sardonic smile. “But don’t despair, you’ll soon get used to bricks. Even our own Outcasts have learned not to flinch at the sight of them.” He continued down the passage.

Seth’s mouth dropped at Jared’s rudeness; this was so foreign to the Jared he had seen just moments ago in his vision. It just added to his anger at Reuel’s Curse.

The Pledged at Sophia’s rear prodded her back; she gave him a fierce look and started walking.

For Seth and Sophia, both taller than Erin and Kezeah, negotiating the tortuous twists and turns of the tunnel was no easy matter. Stooping, cursing each time they bumped their heads on the rough ceiling, they struggled after Jared, but he kept up the merciless pace until they reached a dark staircase.

Her temper now as short as her breath, Sophia stopped walking and locked her arms across her chest. “Having just cracked my skull open, you now expect me to scramble up those treacherous stairs too. No doubt hoping I’ll fall and break my neck. Well, forget it. I’m not moving.”

“Sophia!” Kezeah whispered, jabbing her in the ribs as she stepped gingerly onto the first narrow step.

Sophia ignored her. “Only savages and rats live in places like this.”

Jared’s eyes narrowed. “Savages and rats, you say, my lady?”

Sophia set her face into a cold stare, locking her hypnotic blue eyes on his.

He surprised her by holding her gaze. “I hate to disappoint you, my lady, but Lord Rustus, Lord of the Household, under the direction of the Overlord himself, has chosen your apartment. Surely you don’t question their judgment in this matter?”

“As a matter of fact, I do.”

“In that case, I’ll gladly pass on your concerns. If that’s what you really want.”

“Enough, Sophia. This isn’t a fight you can win.” Sophia’s Guardian had joined them.

Tiffany Price Reads -

I enjoyed the complex tale. The main characters and secondary ones are all very interesting. There are several surprises along the way. You start and think you understand what's going on, who is on what side but then there comes another twist into the plot and you're not so sure. So you have to read more.

The only thing that disappointed me about this book is the fact that it leaves you wanting. Needing to know more about what happens to the characters and their lives is usually not a bad thing when it's a series, but waiting for the second book is going to be a killer!

Needless to say, we're pretty pleased with the initial response and now we want to share the joy. So next week we'll be GIVING AWAY 5 eBook copies of Pledged as part of the Reading-clean-giveaway-hop hosted by Clean Teen Fiction, One Librarian's Book Reviews & I Am A Reader, Not A Writer.

Q: Best cover? What is the best cover of a book that you've read and loved?

I struggled a bit with that, but I think in the end the prize goes to Taste, by Kate Evangelista. Maybe I'm just a sucker for pretty dresses . . . .

Seth: This is my favourite. Great book too if you like urban fantasy.

Welcome to another round of FF hosted by Parajunkee & Alison Can Read

Q: Worst cover? What is the worst cover of a book that you've read and loved?

Erin: I don't read books unless I like the cover. I know, that sounds so shallow, but there are so many books out there that I have to have some way of judging. But some of the worst covers I've seen are found on the classics. Pride and Prejudice is a prime example. Horrible.

Seth: For me that's easy, I don't like misleading covers. The cover must reflect what's inside the book. One cover that really disappointed me was Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card. That weird dagger-thing makes it look like high fantasy, but it's wrong and reflects nothing of the Sci-Fi elements of the book. So I'm glad I looked passed it or I'd have missed a great read.

Erin: That was a good question, which leads us so nicely into something else we want to share with you today - how Seth and I judged each other in that heart-stopping moment when we first met. And to do that, we posted a short excerpt from our book.

Despite the heat, Seth felt icy. Dread could do that to him. Or so he had recently discovered. Deep breathing usually calmed him, so he sucked in a lungful of desert air and told himself to relax. It didn’t help. By the time he’d walked from the aircraft to the immigration hall he’d ripped off a jagged piece of thumbnail, already bitten raw. He handed his US passport to the Botswanan border official, and, after a frown, and a stamp, joined the crowd at the baggage carousel. Botswana in southern Africa was the last place on earth he’d ever have picked for a holiday destination. But he wasn’t here on holiday. Not even close.

His backpack was slow in coming. Tired from his long-haul flight from New York, he leaned against the wall and closed his eyes. Almost as if to mock him, the hated vision that had brought him to Botswana burst into his mind. In an instant he was back in ancient times, watching a man he knew only as Gideon. As usual, Gideon was huddled on a windswept hill with his band of hopeless soldiers, waiting to be slaughtered by a huge army gathered in the valley below.

Seth snapped his eyes open to stop the battle from waging in his mind. It wasn’t that he was particularly squeamish; he’d watched enough movies to iron clad his stomach against gory visuals. But no movie had ever left him icy with dread the way Gideon’s battle did. And the reason for that was simple. The moment the visions had started, he had known that the war, fought so long ago in a place he’d never heard of, was far from over. And, as reluctant as he was, he too was being enlisted to fight in a cause he didn’t understand or want.

He forced himself to focus on the present: Erin, who waited for him in the arrivals hall; his brother Kyle, whom he’d come to Botswana to visit; Kyle’s expedition to find the Lost City of the Kalahari . . .

He ripped off another piece of fingernail. Thinking about the search for the Lost City was almost as bad as the war-vision. I hope Kyle never finds the damned place. He slapped his hand on his thigh. Enough! Grabbing his backpack off the carousel, he set his face into a smile and strode into the arrivals hall.

The first hurdle was finding Erin. She was due to arrive an hour earlier on a flight from Cape Town in South Africa, one of Botswana’s neighbours. He’d never met her, although they had spoken over the phone once. Then she’d described herself as “a short, seventeen-year-old (a year younger than him) with a mass of ginger hair.” She’d sounded nice. Meeting her was the one ray of brightness in this otherwise dark picture.

He stopped to scan the crowd. A petite girl with shoulder length, reddish-blonde curls, dressed in skinny jeans and a purple blouse, immediately caught his eye. It had to be Erin. Nice legs. What’s it with girls that they always under-sell themselves? He studied her face with his artist’s eye. Vermeer would’ve killed to paint her. Suddenly wishing he didn’t look so grimy after his three plane-changes, he walked over to join her.

“Hi, I’m Seth. You’ve got to be Erin. My brother’s just married your sister Izzy.”

“And after only knowing each other for about a week.”

Her dimpled grin was infectious, making him crack his trademark crooked smile. “Madness.”

“Mysterious.” Erin cocked her head to one side, seemingly appraising him.

He knew he had been accurate when he’d told her he was tall and dark-haired. But what he had failed to mention was what girls had often said they liked about him: his strong, angular face, softened by expressive brown eyes. He watched her eyes rove over his grey Muse: Resistance t-shirt, taking in his broad shoulders and chest. From there they darted down his black camo-pants to his boots. Amused by her blatant assessment, he cocked his head to one side, watching her. Suddenly Erin giggled – was she embarrassed? – and picked up her bag.

“We’ve yet another plane to catch. My fourth in the last twenty-four hours,” Seth said, hoping to explain away his rumpled appearance. “To a place called Maun.”

“So we do. Let the adventure begin.”

THE LIGHTNING BIRD AND OTHER DEMONS

Welcome to our stop on the Parajunkee & Alison Can Read Follow Friday hop. I must say, I'm having such fun with this. It gives me a real thrill to see what other bloggers are doing and thinking.

So, now to the question . . .

What blogger inspires you? It can be any kind, it doesn't have to be a book blog.

Because Seth doesn't read other people's blogs (Don't worry, I more than make up for it) I will answer this question.

Seth: interrupts Excuse me, but this is my blog too, you know, and I will answer the question.

Erin: Okaaay . . .

Seth: I just think that anyone who can blog consistently, posting every day, is worthy of a medal. And people who've been blogging for two years . . . jeez, I don't know how they do it. Okay, Erin, now it's over to you.

Erin: Sorry, Seth. Sometimes I get carried away. contrite face I enjoy so many blogs, but one that stands out for me is: http://read-a-holicz.blogspot.com Lisseth and Karina started blogging at the same time we did, and I have watched in awe as they have grown. They have really inspired me!

Seth: Now I'd like to introduce you all to another influence in our world.

As you know if you're a regular visitor to our blog, we've been talking about angels this week, and we promised we'd introduce you to a demonic angel named Reuel.

Erin: The same Reuel who tried to murder me. He wanted to force Seth to forsake me so he would worship him. You can read about in our story Pledged. Although once human, Reuel's now a wraith-

Seth: interrupts That's just a fancy word for demon. But the guy radiates no light, so he defies all photography, but we have a pic of his pet Lightning Bird - probably the scariest bird alive.

Erin: Even though Reuel and his mutant, two-headed bird lived fifteen-hundred-years ago, the Lightning Bird was so feared that it has blazed its way into African legend.

People in southern Africa, where I live and were Pledged happened, are still terrified of it because they believe it eats souls. Some people even think that if a Lightning Bird flies over your house, someone will die.

Seth: Talk about the 'blue bird of happiness' . . .

Erin: Very funny, Seth. But the superstitious in Africa don't think it's so cool. If they even suspect that a Lightning Bird flew over they house, they will burn their own home to the ground to stop the curse. SOMEONE IS WATCHING . . .

What would you do over if you were to start your blog again from scratch?

That's the question on Friday Feature and Follow hosted by Parajunkee & Alison Can Read. For me, the answer is simple. I would have persuaded Seth to join a meme ages ago, because I'm having so much fun with it. But you know Seth and blogging . . . need I say more? rolls eyes

Seth: laughs I think you've probably said enough! And just for your information, blogging is growing on me. I like interviewing characters. So to answer the question . . . I would have started doing character interviews right from the start. Which pretty much brings me to what we want to talk about today on Angel Week. For new visitors to our little world, Erin and I are spotlighting angels. The ones from literature and the ones we met in Shenaya - the land Erin and I time travelled to in our book, Pledged.

Erin: interrupts Yes, literature is replete (there's a nice word) with references to angels, but I have to tell you that none of the ones you've read about before are anything like angels Seth and I met in Shenaya.

A big difference is that Shenayan angels were all once mortal. They were all born to ordinary mortal parents who had no special powers during mortality - that changes after death. Just like us, they once lived on planet Earth where they had to make tough choices between good and evil, right and wrong. But it's only after death that they become angels.

Seth: interjects And just so you know, the word angel is nothing but a fancy title for dead guys who come back to Earth to meddle in the lives of their descendents.

Erin: tired sigh Please excuse Seth's cynicism. But yes, the angels we met in Shenaya do take a keen interest in the affairs of the living - and that's not always positive. You see, there are two types of angels.

Firstly, the demonic angels who, while still mortal, pledged their allegiance to Reuel and his Lightning Bird (more about them in our next post. Watch this space) These demons are known as Gefallen - the fallen in the battle - and they will do anything they can to force the living to worship their master Reuel.

Then there are the angels who fight against Reuel. They call themselves Guardians. It is there job to watch over, guide and inspire us to make good choices. You know all those times you thought someone was watching over you, protecting you? That was probably your Guardian.

Seth: But don't be taken in - just because they're supposed to be Guardians, they're not always helpful. I mean, I could tell you stories-

Erin: shoves Seth out the way Which is why I'm going to introduce you to Kate. She's a Guardian, and just for some background info: Kate lived about fifteen hundred years ago in Shenaya. She was hacked to death by Reuel's soldiers because she refused to pledge her allegiance. She is also one of my best friends (as you'll see as you read on the Soul Wars Saga)

So, welcome to our blog, Kate . . .

Kate: "Hello everyone. It's amazing being here . . . on a blog. When I was alive, if you'd told me I would have my likeness taken and posted - that's the right word, isn't it? - on a blog, I'd have said you you'd been out in the sun too long. But here I am, as large as life."

Seth: "I've got to tell you, Kate, you're the only angel I have any time for."

Kate: sets her hair on fire "Gee, thanks Seth. Given that I can read you mind, and I know exactly how much you hate all us 'dead guys', I'll take that as a massive compliment."

Seth: "So tell us, how does it feel to be a Guardian, watching over mortals day and night? Doesn't it get as boring as hell?"

Kate: "Hmm . . . boring as hell? Now there's a interesting thought." picking at her neon green nail varnish, stolen from Erin "'Being in hell - or, put another way, being stuck with Reuel is not really what I'd call boring. Endless . . . maybe. Terrifying . . . definitely. That's why I refused to Pledge."

Erin: grabs Kate's leg to stop her drifting away "Kate! Focus! You haven't answered Seth's question."

Kate: sighs "Oh. No, Seth, I don't get bored. Much. Distracted, maybe." grins "I'm easily distracted."

Seth: laughing "Don't we know. Now you say you can read our minds . . . what other awesome powers do you have?"

Kate: grins "I can step through solid matter as if it doesn't exist. I can also speak into people's minds. I'm invisible most of the time. But I can also appear without warning," winks at Seth "Trust me, that can get mortal hearts racing."

Erin: "No kidding."

Kate: "And I can fly." becoming serious "But I can't free my friends from Reuel's pledge. That's where you to come in." claps hands together "No pressure." vanishes into the ether

Erin: "And there we have Kate. And to our readers, thanks for stopping by, and don't be shy to leave a comment - I know Kate would get a real thrill out of that."

ANGEL WEEK IN SHENAYA

It's time for something new. We've done book reviews and we've spoken about the launch of Pledged, but now I'm in the mood for something completely different. Angels. Sounds fun, doesn't it?

My mom owns a pack of Angel Cards (She's very into that kind of stuff) Me, not so much. So when she's tell me to pick a card so she can give me a 'reading' (translated: a message from the angel whose picture appears on the card) I'm always a bit skeptical.

Seth: *interrupts* No surprise there. Regular visitors to this blog will know that Erin is always skeptical when anyone even mentions the word paranormal, or mysterious, or supernatural-

Erin: *interrupts him, interrupting her* Okay, Seth. I think they've got it. I don't do weird. Or rather, I didn't until I time-travelled to Shenaya. But now we are digressing. I want to talk about angels.

The Bible is probably our first source of reference about these mysterious beings. There we read about cherubim with outspread wings guarding the Mercy Seat. Or holding flaming swords while standing watch over the Tree of Life, ready to smite Adam and Eve if they dared to eat those apples. Angels are even responsible for driving the Lord's chariot.

Seth: That sounds so cool, the driving the Lord's chariot bit. I just love the imagery! Can you see the movie? A CGI dream.

Erin: Then you're going to love this, Seth. Seraphim - yet another type of angel - are supposed to encircle the throne of God, day and night signing praises to his name. But it is the Ophanim - the arbiters - who guard the God's chair.

Seth: *Shakes head* What is it with the human obsession with naming thing? Why can't they just stick to angel?

Erin: *rolls eyes* Ignore Seth. He just doesn't have the proper appreciation for interesting facts. Now, I don't know if you agree, but none of these biblical angels seem to match those fat, cute little babies with moth wings medieval artists loved to paint. Somehow, something went wrong in the translation.

And then when we look east, it gets even weirder. Did you know that that in Middle Eastern angelology, cherubim have bodies that look like lions or bulls, with eagle's wings, and human faces?

I'd love to post a few pictures of all these angels, but with all the litigation going on, I'll leave it to your fertile imagination to picture them. That, after all, is what every artist has done since Adam and Eve were chucked out the garden. And that's why all angels look so different in human art.

Seth: And what about the guys with the big names - Michael, Gabriel, Raphael - where do they come in?

Erin: Interesting question. According to the Bible, they didn't have wings, but they were sent to Earth to deliver messages from God to selected humans. Mary being a prime example.

Seth: Has anyone seen them since?

Erin: *shrugs*

Seth: *grins* Oh, so there is some stuff you don't know? Nice to know.

Erin: *stiffly* That hardly counts. Now, moving on. . . no discussion on angels could ever be complete without mentioning the angels of the Apocalypse. In the book of Revelation in the Bible, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are often interpreted to be angels.

The First Horseman rides a white horse. He is supposed to symbolize truth spreading across the Earth. The Second Horseman, who rides upon a red horse, is said to symbolize blood, or the archetype of the warrior angel. The Third Horseman, on the black steed, brings starvation and disease. Not surprising, the Fourth is the rider who brings death.

Seth: Charming. What a lot we have to look forward to.

Erin: *smiles sweetly* Still ignoring you, Seth. Finally, (for the purposes of today's post, anyway) we have the fallen angels. Lucifer - The Son of the Morning - who fell from grace, taking a third of the hosts of heaven with him. They are also angels, of a kind.

Seth: By now you're probably wondering where this sudden interest in angels comes from. I promise, it isn't just designed to give Erin an opportunity to show off.

Erin: *punches Seth on the arm* This is Angel Week on our blog, and we hope to delight and entertain you with lots of fascinating angelology. Or in English, for Seth to understand - the study of angels.

Seth: *laughing* And we'll introduce you to some of the angels we meet in Shenaya. Stay posted. Like everything we do on our blog, it will be fun.

JUSTICE is served: Meet the characters

Yes, can you believe, it's Friday. Again. So that means another Follow my Blog Friday hosted by Parajunkee & Alison Can Read. And the question they have for us today is:

Q: Do your reading habits change based on your mood? Do you read a certain genre if you are feeling depressed or happy?

So, I'll go first. Maybe the best way to answer this is to say that books change my mood, rather than the other way round. Sad books drag me down, but that's not a bad thing. I think it means I have feelings. I guess I'm a bit sensitive that way. So that's me. What do you think Seth?

Seth: Not books so much. But I definitely choose music based on my mood. The happier I am, the wilder the rock. When I'm down, the tempo on my iPod changes too.

Erin: What about you guys? We'd love to hear what you think. And in the meantime, while we wait for your replies, we are going to introduce you to some visitors we have on the blog today.

Welcome to Rain, River, Owen and Carsyn. For new visitors to our blog, we've been spotlighting Jade Varden's AMAZING book Justice this week and you have arrived in time for the final post - characters interviews. Read on . . . they are always fun.

Erin: *winks at Rain* “It’s been a while since we’ve had so many hot guys sharing our space. I can understand why you had your head turned in Justice. Not that you didn’t have good reason. After all, finding out that the people you thought were your parents had actually kidnapped you when you were a baby is not a small thing. And that’s what we want to talk to you about today. I know Seth is burning up to ask you about Social Services.”

Seth: “No kidding! I’ve been a victim of their ‘service’ too. Trust me, it sucks. So Rain, tell us how it felt when they ‘abducted’ you from your mom, your dad, and your brother and dumped you with your so-called ‘real’ family?”

Rain: “I felt like I was living someone else’s life. Nothing felt real to me anymore; I just couldn’t believe it was happening. For a long time, I think I was hoping that things would suddenly change again and go back to the way they were. It all happened so quickly, I could hardly think of anything.”

Erin: “Maybe you’ll also describe how it felt when you discovered you were not Rain Ramey, the person you thought you had been for the last sixteen years, and were really named Chloe. How does one cope with an identity shift like that?”

Rain: “It was strange. I kept looking at myself in the mirror, expecting to become a different person maybe. It was a little like being in a play. All I knew for sure was that I was supposed to start acting and looking a certain way, but I didn’t really know how to do it.”

Erin: “Okay. Now to the love . . . you had three really interesting guys – River, Owen and Tom - eager to help you find your place in your new life. In an ideal world which of them would you have chosen to date?”

Rain: “At different times, I thought about dating all three of them – but I think a lot of the girls who have known them have probably done that.”

Seth: “What I don’t get, Rain, is that River showed himself so willing to help you get to the bottom of all the lies and secrets clouding your life, why weren’t you more willing to share with him?”

Erin: “I agree. I just didn’t get that either. I mean, he’s caring and brooding. And he looks like Nicholas Hoult. Those eyes . . .!”

Rain: *grins* “I know. Awesome.”

Seth: “Hey, you guys, focus!”

Rain: *mock contrition* “Sorry, Seth. To answer your question - I shared a lot with River I didn’t share with anyone else, but sharing with anyone is scary. Everyone around me was wearing masks, and I couldn’t be sure who was being genuine and who was still lying.”

Seth: “Rain, another thing I wondered about. If it had been me, I’d have skipped out on my new family and would have gone back to the people I considered to be my real parents. Why didn’t you try harder to make contact with them?”

Rain: “A part of me is still a little angry at them, and maybe I’ll always be a little angry with them. I thought they would try a lot harder to get to me back.”

Erin: “Okay Seth. I think you’ve grilled poor Rain quite enough. *Grins at River* “Now it’s my turn. River, given that you had so many problems of your own, why were you so willing to help Rain?

River: “I helped her because I had so many problems. I kind of know what she was going through. The first time I saw Rain, I knew she wasn’t like any of the girls I’ve ever known before. She’s like me.”

Erin: “I hate to ask this, but I have to know . . . how did you feel once she started dating Owen?”

River: “Confused, since she had practically sworn off dating right before it happened. And I was even more confused by her choice. She could have picked twenty guys that would have been better than Owen.

Erin: *under her breath* “Agreed.” *Turning to Owen* “I’ll admit that you are a bit of an enigma, Owen. Don’t you think it a bit odd that you dumped Carsyn – Rain’s sister – to date Rain? Did you do it to cause trouble, or do you really like her?”

Owen: “Carsyn’s a great girl, but we weren’t right for each other. Rain’s the one who helped me see it.”

Erin: *aside to Seth* “Slime ball!”

Seth: “Shush! He’ll hear you.” *turns quickly to Carsyn* “I have a final question for you-”

Erin: *interrupts* “Carsyn, I don’t want to pull any punches here, but you remind me of my step-sister Mia.” *aside to our readers, and trust me, Mia is NOT a nice person* “So tell us exactly what you thought when your parents told you Rain – whom you despised - was actually your long lost sister?”

Carsyn: “I thought she was going to be a huge embarrassment to the entire family, and I was right.”

Seth: *nudging Erin the ribs to shut her up* “Okay, I think that about does it. Thanks for joining us guys. And we hope to have you back after we’ve read your next book, The Tower. It’s burning a hole in my eReader because I HAVE to know what happens next in your lives.”

JUSTICE review and Author's Interview

Today I'm spotlighting a book I really identified with, starting with the title - Justice, book one of the Deck of Lies series. As Rain, the main character in Justice says, when you build your life on a foundation of lies, it only takes one truth for the whole thing to come crashing down.

For Rain, the truth was that the people she had loved for the last sixteen years as her mom and dad weren't really her parents. Stop for a minute and think about how tough that must have been for her. I've some inkling of what she felt because I recently discovered that my parents - my whole family, in fact - lied to me about something life-changing. I guess that's why I can identify with Rain.

Like me, through no fault of her own, Rain ended up in the hands of Social Services - and trust us both when we tell you, that's no fun. With little thought to how it would freak Rain out, her case worker dumped her with what she claimed was Rain's real family. Confronted with an entirely new identity, Rain is forced to live with this new set of parents. Her new, mega rich family are determined to deny the existence of her former mom, dad and brother. And this is were the story hots up into a full-blown mystery, ending in a murder. But that's all I'm going to tell you about the plot, because I don't want to give to much away.

Now to my impressions.

The first thing you HAVE to do is look past the cover. PLEASE don't judge this book on that truly horrible pink thing. The book deserves a million times more than that. It's a great read, filled with life-like, credible characters, and to be honest, I found it impossible to put down. I read it way too late into the night because I had to know what happened to Rain. And for those of you who like romance (hint . . . Erin) there's enough of that to keep you happy. In fact, Rain is spoilt for choice-

Erin interrupts . . . "She has three hotties to choose from. But in my opinion, she picked the wrong guy." *grins* "Seth's frowning at me, so back to him."

As I was saying, Rain is . . . well, to be honest, at times very irritating because she refuses to trust the one guy - River - who really wants to help her. (Yes, agreed. Some of the names in the book are a bit odd, but I've definitely seen worse)

Erin interrupts . . . "Seth! How can you talk about Rain not trusting people! That's rich, coming from you."

*Seth gives wry smile* Okay . . . I suppose I can understand Rain not trusting anyone after all the lies she'd been told, but still, at times I wanted to shout at her for being so secretive with the one person who was trying to help her. But through it all, she's a spunky, confused, determined, bright teenager coping with waaaay to much. I really liked her.

Erin, again . . . "And the ending was really unexpected. I just didn't see it coming."

Me neither. All told, it was a great read. Maybe one of the best I've read in 2012, The moment I finished I started looking for book two, The Tower. I will review it for you in a few weeks time.

But now we have the author, Jade Varden, with us today to answer some questions about Justice.

Hi Jade, welcome to our corner of madness. Maybe you'll start by telling us little about yourself. What do you do when you're not writing?

Jade: I don’t have a great answer for that question, Seth, because really I’m always writing. The only time I’m not working is when I’m exercising, bathing or sleeping. But sometimes, if I do steal a few moments for myself, I like to play video games.

Seth: Video games? We do those too. What are your favs?

Jade: Lately I've been mostly playing Sims 3 on my computer and Goldeneye on Wii.

Seth: Goldeneye? Cool, so you really are into skullduggery and espionage. I guess that's why you wrote a mystery story. So tell me, what's your favorite scene or quote (spoiler-free) from Justice?

Jade: My favorite scene in Justice is the library where Rain’s doing some research, and she spends some time talking to the person working there.

Seth: That may be a bit too spoiler free! Rain meets up with River, and, well, let's just say he doesn't win any brownie points for politeness. Okay, now down to what I really want to know. Who controls your story? You or your characters?

Jade: I always thought I did, but something interesting happened to me while I was writing Death, the third book in the Deck of Lies series. One character completely took over a scene. I actually had the book plotted a bit differently, but as I was writing a big “reveal”, the character just somehow took control and changed the Fates. Their version of events was so much better than mine, so I left it in.

Seth: *grins* Jade, you should learn to trust! Us characters always know what's best for our stories.

Erin interrupts: Jade, while Seth is smirking, let me ask about new projects. Are you working with some new characters in a new project? And if so, how do your other characters feel about this?

Jade: I'm introducing several new characters in the book I’m writing now, the fourth in the Deck of Lies series. It’s hard to bring new characters in at the end of the series, and there has been some clashing between the new guys and the others. Anyone new is a threat, and they all know it.

*Erin and Seth exchange knowing smiles.*

Seth: Only too right. Okay, so how do you handle it when your characters give you a hard time with writer’s block?

Jade: The first thing I do is stop trying to write. Every time I try to force a scene, it ends up getting deleted later because it’s no good. So I like to step away from the computer, walk around, and try to think it out. If I’m good and stuck, I’ll work on something else (like maybe a blog post) or I’ll take a break from writing for a while until something comes to me.

Seth: I have to know, what inspiration/advice would you give our readers who are also writers to encourage them to continue in the noble work of providing a voice for characters?

Jade: Picture them in your mind, and see them as real people. Remember that they have to have motivations and ambitions to do what they do, and that in their own minds, in their world, they’re all main characters and not just supporting cast members.

Seth: See them as real people? Strange comment that. After all, what else can they be but real people? I mean, look at Erin and me - we even have a blog.

Erin: *nudges Seth in the ribs to shut him up* I have a question for you, Jade. Who is your favorite book boyfriend?

Jade: Gilbert, I think, from the Anne of Green Gables series. The actor who played him in the movie is totally gorgeous, and Gil grows up to be a doctor. Nothing wrong with that.

Erin: Gilbert! From Green Gables? Eat your heart out Ettiene St.Claire!

Jade: What can I say? Gilbert likes wordy women!

Seth: Jade, it's been so great having you, and you answered all our crazy questions so willingly. Thanks for that.

Welcome to our stop on the Follow my blog on Friday hop.

Seth has left it to me to answer the question this week. Between you and me, I think that's because he spent more time at school playing basketball than reading his English lit! Actually, that's not really fair. After Seth's parents died he was forced to changed school a lot, so I guess he had more important things to worry about than his favourite books.

Seth rolls eyes . . . Erin, there are dozens of blogs these poor people have to visit, so just speed this process up for them by answering the question.

Erin . . . Okay, okay, Seth. I'm just giving them the background. So folks, this week's question is:

Summer Reading. What was your favorite book that you were REQUIRED to read when you were in school?

That's a no-brainer right there. We studied Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice when I was in grade 10. That was the BEST ever. Regular visitors to this blog will know that I just adore Miss Elizabeth Bennet.

But another favourite was Macbeth - in the original Shakespeare. I just love Shakespearean English. And as for those witches . . . how could you not love them? Fantasy on steroids.

SOUL MATES: Destined for each other, or what?

As part of our support for the wonderful bloggers on the Pledged tour, today we are highlighting a spot Seth and I did over at Vanya's blog: http://vanya-drum.blogspot.com/search/label/character%20interviews Vanya asked some searching questions on what it felt like to be soul mates, and because we know you all love the concept of having one person designed just for you, we decided to share part of it. So here goes . . .

Vanya: I'd really like to know what it means to have a soul mate. What does it feel like? Because honestly, the idea of a soul mate is somewhat scary in my opinion. I mean, having one person to compliment you to the littlest detail... it must be sort of creepy.

*Seth and Erin exchange looks*

Erin: “Seth, you can go first.”

Seth: “Gee, thanks. And Erin, you’re not allowed to hit me if you don’t like what I say.”

Erin: *grins*: “As if I would . . . in public!”

Seth: “Trust me, you would.” *takes deep breath* “Vanya, having a soul mate is scary. Very. Sure, the idea sounds cool that you’re bonded to the one person designed to make you happy forever. But what about freedom to choose? Where does that come in? That’s what I struggled with at first. I don’t like being told what to do – or who to love.”

Erin: “Seth, I hate to point this out, but you’ve just answered question two. I think what Vanya wants to know is how we even know we're soul mates, and . . . and how we felt about each other. Like when we first met.”

Seth: “Then you tell her.”

Erin: “It was the Guardians – they’re angels by the way – who first showed us that we were soul mates. Let me tell you, that was pretty amazing, discovering we’d known and loved each other for . . . well, like forever before we were born. And that we even chose to be together again once we were born.”

Seth: "Yeah . . . it sounds great in theory. The trouble is, unless you can travel back in time to before you were even born, you have no memory of it. So that makes life pretty interesting when some angel pops up and tells you the girl you’ve just met is your one and only.”

Erin: "But, Seth, we did travel back in time. And the angels did explain to us that we might feel an echo of our past relationship when we met up again in mortality. And, on some level, when I first met you, I did instinctively know you’d be very special to me.”

Seth: “No, you didn’t! You were too busy checking me out in the present to be thinking of crazy echoes from the past.”

Erin: *giggles* “Well, I admit, I thought you were gorgeous. The classic tall, dark, sexy stranger. And those eyes! Vanya, you should see Seth’s eyes. Brown with gold flecks – I’m not kidding. And he has this crooked smile-thing going-”

Seth interrupts: *looking embarrassed* “Okay, so you had a hormone rush. Big deal. I thought you were pretty cute too. But it wasn’t love at first sight. Not for either of us. Although, if it hadn’t . . .”

Erin: *leans forward* “What? You can’t just break off in mid-sentence like that.”

Seth: “Let’s just say, if I hadn’t discovered you were my soul mate, and that I’d made promises to you before we were even born, I think I would have liked you a lot more. So to answer your second question, Vanya. Yes, I did find it creepy to be told that I have a soul mate and that I had to choose her, or else I would be miserable for eternity. That was very tough for me because I already had a loyalty to someone else.”

Erin: “In case you are worrying, this isn’t a love triangle. It was Seth’s brother who I was fighting against. Imagine how that made me feel? A brother! Now I could understand if it had been some really intelligent, beautiful girl, but a brother! And not a very trustworthy one either. After all, he kind of set the demons on us.”

Seth: “And Erin will never let me forget it.” *nudges Erin* “And if you say anything else about him, you’ll give the story away.”

Erin: “True. So to finally answer your question, Vanya. . . even though we’re soul mates, It’s not like we are two jigsaw puzzle pieces that fit perfectly together. We are actually very different. I’m out-spoken – often too blunt – and a bit of a fighter, while Seth is more guarded. He’s actually very gentle. And he hates conflict. Not always such a useful trait when you’re fighting a war.”

Seth: *shakes head* “But we do like the same music. So that works. And movies. We have a connection there. Erin wants to act when she leaves school, and I want to do CGI for movies. So we do have some stuff going for us. Even if I am not some kinda maniac who just want to kill everyone.”

Erin: “Not that I am either. A killer maniac, I mean.”

Seth: *musses Erin’s hair* “Just move onto the next question.”

Vanya: Would you mind sharing what it feels like to lose the person who's soul holds your other half?

Goodbye and I hope Hello

WHY I BLOG

Q: What do you hope to accomplish with your blog? Is it to one day become an author yourself, just for fun, maybe get some online attention, or maybe something very different?

To be honest, I'd never even considered owning a blog before I started researching how authors market their books in the 21 century.

That was at the start of 2012 and every guru on the subject insisted that you had to have a blog to get the word out about your books. So, being the lemming I am, I immediately followed suit.

Now that Pledged has been launched, I feel we need to share the posts. So while most of them will still be written by Seth and Erin, I also want a say.

Has blogging worked as a marketing tool? Again, to be honest, I don't know. But what I do know is that I've grown to love the contact with other bloggers and the excitement of being part of this magical world. That alone makes it all worthwhile.

PLEDGED BOOK TRAILER

Erin: I don't read books unless I like the cover. I know, that sounds so shallow, but there are so many books out there that I have to have some way of judging. But some of the worst covers I've seen are found on the classics. Pride and Prejudice is a prime example. Horrible.

Erin: That was a good question, which leads us so nicely into something else we want to share with you today - how Seth and I judged each other in that heart-stopping moment when we first met. And to do that, we posted a short excerpt from our book.

GETTING TO KNOW US

THE LIGHTNING BIRD AND OTHER DEMONS

Because Seth doesn't read other people's blogs (Don't worry, I more than make up for it) I will answer this question.

Seth: *interrupts* Excuse me, but this is my blog too, you know, and I will answer the question.

Erin: Okaaay . . .

Seth: I just think that anyone who can blog consistently, posting every day, is worthy of a medal. And people who've been blogging for two years . . . jeez, I don't know how they do it. Okay, Erin, now it's over to you.

Erin: Sorry, Seth. Sometimes I get carried away. *contrite face* I enjoy so many blogs, but one that stands out for me is: http://read-a-holicz.blogspot.com Lisseth and Karina started blogging at the same time we did, and I have watched in awe as they have grown. They have really inspired me!

Seth: Now I'd like to introduce you all to another influence in our world.

As you know if you're a regular visitor to our blog, we've been talking about angels this week, and we promised we'd introduce you to a demonic angel named Reuel.

Seth: *interrupts* That's just a fancy word for demon. But the guy radiates no light, so he defies all photography, but we have a pic of his pet Lightning Bird - probably the scariest bird alive.

Erin: Even though Reuel and his mutant, two-headed bird lived fifteen-hundred-years ago, the Lightning Bird was so feared that it has blazed its way into African legend.

People in southern Africa, where I live and were Pledged happened, are still terrified of it because they believe it eats souls. Some people even think that if a Lightning Bird flies over your house, someone will die.

Seth: Talk about the 'blue bird of happiness' . . .

That's the question on Friday Feature and Follow hosted by Parajunkee & Alison Can Read. For me, the answer is simple. I would have persuaded Seth to join a meme ages ago, because I'm having so much fun with it. But you know Seth and blogging . . . need I say more? *rolls eyes*

Erin: *interrupts* Yes, literature is replete (there's a nice word) with references to angels, but I have to tell you that none of the ones you've read about before are anything like angels Seth and I met in Shenaya.

Seth: *interjects* And just so you know, the word angel is nothing but a fancy title for dead guys who come back to Earth to meddle in the lives of their descendents.

Erin: *tired sigh* Please excuse Seth's cynicism. But yes, the angels we met in Shenaya do take a keen interest in the affairs of the living - and that's not always positive. You see, there are two types of angels.

Then there are the angels who fight against Reuel. They call themselves Guardians. It is there job to watch over, guide and inspire us to make good choices. You know all those times you thought someone was watching over you, protecting you? That was probably your Guardian.

Seth: But don't be taken in - just because they're supposed to be Guardians, they're not always helpful. I mean, I could tell you stories-

Kate: "Hello everyone. It's amazing being here . . . on a blog. When I was alive, if you'd told me I would have my likeness taken and posted - that's the right word, isn't it? - on a blog, I'd have said you you'd been out in the sun too long. But here I am, as large as life."

Seth: "I've got to tell you, Kate, you're the only angel I have any time for."

Kate: *sets her hair on fire* "Gee, thanks Seth. Given that I can read you mind, and I know exactly how much you hate all us 'dead guys', I'll take that as a massive compliment."

Seth: "So tell us, how does it feel to be a Guardian, watching over mortals day and night? Doesn't it get as boring as hell?"

Erin: *grabs Kate's leg to stop her drifting away* "Kate! Focus! You haven't answered Seth's question."

Kate: *sighs* "Oh. No, Seth, I don't get bored. Much. Distracted, maybe." *grins* "I'm easily distracted."

Seth: *laughing* "Don't we know. Now you say you can read our minds . . . what other awesome powers do you have?"

Kate: *grins* "I can step through solid matter as if it doesn't exist. I can also speak into people's minds. I'm invisible most of the time. But I can also appear without warning," *winks at Seth* "Trust me, that can get mortal hearts racing."

Erin: "No kidding."
