(ഇന്‍റര്‍ ഗവണ്മെന്‍റല്‍ പാനല്‍ ഓണ്‍ ക്ലൈമറ്റ് ചെയ്ഞ്ച്) 2014-ലെ റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടില്‍ ഈ വിവരങ്ങള്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുത്താന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

കാലാവസ്ഥാ വ്യതിയാനങ്ങള്‍ രൂക്ഷമായ സാഹചര്യത്തില്‍ പ്രാദേശികമായ കാലാവസ്ഥാ മുന്നറിയിപ്പുകള്‍ക്ക് പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ട്. ഒരിടത്ത് മഴ പെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ തൊട്ടടുത്ത് മഴയില്ലാത്ത അവസ്ഥ കാണാം. ഓരോ വാര്‍ഡിനും ഓരോ കാലാവസ്ഥ എന്ന സ്ഥിതി. ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തില്‍ ശ്രീലക്ഷ്മിയുടെ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കേരളത്തില്‍ ഏറെ പ്രസക്തിയുണ്ടെന്ന് കാലാവസ്ഥാ വ്യതിയാന ശില്പശാലയില്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കാനെത്തിയ പ്രമുഖ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞര്‍ വിലയിരുത്തി.

ഗുജറാത്തില്‍ ഇത്തരം അറിവുകളെ സമാഹരിച്ച് വിലയിരുത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ അവ ശാസ്ത്രീയമായി ഉപയോഗിക്കാന്‍ കഴിയുന്നതാണെന്നു തെളിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. ചൈനയില്‍ ഭൂചലനത്തിന്റെ മുന്നറിയിപ്പായി ജീവികളുടെ പ്രതികരണങ്ങളെ വിലയിരുത്തുന്നു. 1966-ല്‍ വടക്കന്‍ ചൈനയില്‍ ഭൂചലനത്തിനു മുമ്പ് ഒരു ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ നായകളെല്ലാം കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെയുംകൊണ്ട് അവിടെനിന്ന് രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടതായി പറയുന്നു. ഭൂചലനത്തിന്റെ പ്രഭവകേന്ദ്രമായിരുന്നു ആ ഗ്രാമം. 1969-ല്‍ കടല്‍ജീവികളുടെ അസാധാരണ പെരുമാറ്റം ഭൂചലനത്തിന്റെ മുന്നറിയിപ്പായിരുന്നു. സംഭവത്തിന് 24 മണിക്കൂര്‍ മുമ്പായിരിക്കും ജീവികളുടെ പ്രതികരണങ്ങള്‍.

പക്ഷികളും പ്രാണികളും കൂടുതല്‍ ഭക്ഷണം കരുതിവെക്കുന്നതായി കണ്ടാല്‍ കനത്ത മഞ്ഞോ മഴയോ വരുമെന്നതിന്റെ സൂചനയാണ്.

ഭൂമിയിലെ വൈദ്യുതകാന്തിക മാറ്റങ്ങളെ തിരിച്ചറിയാന്‍ കഴിയുന്ന 'സെന്‍സറുകള്‍' പല ജീവികളിലും ശക്തമായതാവാം ഇതിനു കാരണമെന്ന് ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞര്‍ കരുതുന്നു.

The Long Divergence: What Turned the Tables Between the West and Islam?

For centuries the Islamic world dominated the West militarily, economically, and culturally. As late as 1683, when Ottoman forces laid siege to Vienna, Muslim military domination was a legitimate fear for the Christian world.

Excluding the sophisticated Byzantine Empire—which Muslim Arab forces nearly conquered and Muslim Turkish forces did conquer in 1453—and some of the city-states of Italy, the West remained backward and underdeveloped compared to the Middle East for roughly 1,000 years. Prior to the Renaissance the West had nothing that could rival Damascus, Baghdad or the other great cities of the region.

But then, a funny thing happened. Europe emerged as an economic juggernaut and turned the tables on the Islamic world. Starting in the late 1400s and accelerating with the Industrial Revolution of the late 1700s, the West emerged as the dominant military, economic, and cultural force in the world.

The question that has perplexed scholars for ages is why?

None of the popular explanations are satisfactory. Those who would suggest that Islam is hostile to commerce have clearly never walked the streets of a Muslim country or have never spent five minutes discussing business with a Lebanese—Muslim or Christian. Arabs—particularly in the Levant—have capitalism in their blood, as do Turks and North Africans. Try your luck at haggling in a bazaar, and you’ll see what I mean.

The oft-cited Muslim prohibition against the charging of interest also fails to hold water. The charging of interest was prohibited for Christians in the West for most of the Middle Ages, and neither Christians nor Muslims prevented Jewish minorities within their borders from charging interest.

Islam’s founder was also no stranger to the business of making money. Unlike Jesus Christ—who lived his earthly life as a humble carpenter and eschewed worldly possessions—Muhammad was a hard-nosed trader and businessman before he became a religious leader, and the Koran is far more “business friendly” than the Christian New Testament.

The second popular explanation—that the Islamic world is poor due to Western imperialism—makes even less sense. Until roughly 1500 it was the Muslim powers doing the colonizing, not the Christian. And in any event, the West’s eventual colonization of the Islamic world happened only after it had become wealthier, so we’re back to the original question: why did the West rise to the top in the first place?

In his engaging new book The Long Divergence, Timur Kuran believes he has found the answer: the West invented the corporation.

The Christian New Testament is a general guide for spiritual and personal living; it is distinctly not an all-encompassing blueprint for organizing a society. Ever since Christ’s admonition to render to Caesar what is Caesar’s and render to God what is God’s, there has been an understanding that there are secular areas of life for which religion does not have the answer. This left the Christian world free to experiment with concepts such as double-entry accounting, the limited partnership or the corporation.

Not so in the Islamic world. As Kuran writes,

In principle, Islamic law covered all human activity… In commerce and finance, two areas in which the Middle East fell conspicuously behind, Islamic law played a key role. People entered into contracts that followed an Islamic template and were enforced through Islamic courts. They apportioned estates according to Islamic inheritance rules. Residents of the region’s great cities obtained services mostly from waqfs, which were trusts formed under Islamic law and supervised by officials with religious training. Almost all lawsuits involving at least one Muslim were litigated by Muslim judges, under Islamic legal principles.

Interesting, the uniform commercial code imposed by Islam was initially a boon to commerce. Since all Muslims played by the same set of rules and were held accountable in the same Islamic courts, business deals across borders became remarkably easy.

Unfortunately, these Islamic institutions had several limitations that made them unsuitable for the modern era:

The concept of limited liability did not exist in Islamic partnership law. All partners were responsible for the obligations of the partnership, which discouraged risk taking.
Islamic partnerships are designed for specific projects and are not designed to be perpetual going concerns. The partnerships are automatically dissolved with the death of a partner, and any partner can dissolve the partnership at any time. Partners could not sell their ownership interests in the form of tradable shares of stock or pass their ownership interests to their heirs.
Islamic inheritance law ensures that assets are dispersed among wives, children, and even siblings, and the common practice of polygamy among the wealthy meant that there were more heirs entitled to a share of the inheritance. Under sharia, a Muslim only has discretion over one third of his or her assets; the rest is distributed per Koranic guidelines.

These restrictions prevented the multigenerational accumulation of wealth and prevented the emergence of large corporations that were capable of engaging is long-term, global enterprises. Something like the British East India Company, for example, would have been absolutely out of the question.

It was only in the late 1800s that Muslim rulers began to import Western legal institutions, and these were subject to opposition by religious conservatives. But by then, the damage was done. The West had already leapt into the position of world dominance.

Though his explanations may seem too simple to some readers, Mr. Kuran makes a compelling case and he has the research to back it up. The Sizemore Investment Letterrecommends The Long Divergence for any readers that are economic history buffs.

Alas, for the Occupy Wall Street crowd, the book will only provide more proof of the unassailable power of the modern corporation.

തമിഴ്നാട്ടിലെ അമ്മായി പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നത് ഡാമിന് കുഴപ്പമൊന്നുമില്ല എന്നാണ്. മിനിമം ഇരുനൂറു കിലോ തൂക്കം കണ്ടേക്കാവുന്ന താന്‍ കുലുങ്ങി നടന്നിട്ട് പൊട്ടാത്ത ഡാമുകളൊന്നും ഭൂമി കുലുങ്ങിയാല്‍ പൊട്ടില്ല എന്നാണ് അമ്മായി വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നത്. പക്ഷെ ഡാമിന്റെ ഉറപ്പു പരിശോധിച്ച റൂര്‍ക്കി ഐ ഐ ടിയിലെ വിദഗ്ധര്‍ പറഞ്ഞത് ഡാം ഏതാണ്ട് പൊട്ടാറായിട്ടുണ്ട് എന്നാണ്. അമ്മായി പറഞ്ഞതാണോ അതോ വിദഗ്ദര്‍ പറഞ്ഞതാണോ ശരിയെന്നു തീര്‍പ്പാക്കുന്നതിന് വേണ്ടി മുപ്പതു ലക്ഷം പേരെ വെള്ളത്തില്‍ മുക്കിക്കൊല്ലാന്‍ നമുക്ക് കഴിയില്ല.

Chevrolet, The Co-Founder

The company that would become Chevrolet was co-founded by a Swiss-born immigrant from France, Louis Chevrolet, seen here at the wheel of a Fiat he crashed during a practice run for the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup, which took place on a route throughout Long Island, New York. Chevrolet's love of racing and his mechanical skills would influence his work as a pioneer in America's automotive industry.

American Origins

While piloting a race car for Buick, Chevrolet met owner William C. Durant, the famous founder of General Motors, who had purchased Buick in 1904. When a series of decisions led stockholders to oust him as head of General Motors, Chevrolet and Durant partnered to form a new company, named for the Frenchman. Competitive Chevrolet

One of the company's earliest successes was the Chevrolet 490 (seen here in a 1916 photo), introduced to compete directly with Ford's Model T (which originally sold for $490, as did Chevrolet's model). Though Ford responded quickly by slashing prices, the Chevy touring car sold well, receiving 4,661 orders in the first 17 days following its introduction and selling more than 18,000 vehicles in its first year. Durant leveraged Chevrolet's growing popularity to regain his stake in General Motors, incorporating the company into General Motors in 1918. The company would move on to become General Motors' largest producer in the 1920s, a title it would keep through the present day.

The Auto Workers Union

In 1936-37, workers at GM participated in a sit-in strike, which the nascent United Auto Workers Union called for in response to unfair working conditions and low wages as the country began to recover from the Great Depression. The strike, which eventually attracted police presence and involvement from the National Guard, is widely considered to have established the legitimacy of the UAW and the unionization (and improvement in working conditions) of the automobile industry. Wartime Success

By the time of Louis Chevrolet's death on June 6, 1941, Chevrolet had climbed to dominance in the auto industry. Its sales topped 1 million cars per year in the early 1940s, before the U.S. government forced a halt on civilian production in order to refocus it on producing weapons and parts for use in the World War II. When the war ended, Chevrolet reintroduced its previous three models, and a late-decade shuffle of management paved the way for the following decade, in which many of Chevrolet's iconic models would be designed and produced. Postwar Production

Dale Earnhardt and NASCAR

One of NASCAR's most revered drivers, Dale Earnhardt, drove a Chevrolet Monte Carlo was sponsored by GM and Chevrolet, among others. Earnhardt, seen here chatting with members of his pit crew at Martinsville Speedway in 1999 won 76 races and seven championships in his career, which ties him with Richard Petty for the most all-time championship wins. Though his death from a late-race crash in 2001's Daytona 500 was truly tragic, it led to a police investigation and the mandated use of several safety devices, now used by regulation in all NASCAR races.

Financial Challenges

As a subsidiary of the automotive giant, Chevrolet's history was tied to the trajectory of General Motors throughout the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. Multiple recessions took their toll on the parent company, although GM was able to regain market share through SUV sales and production improvements. The effects of the September 11 attacks, along with underfunded pension plans hurt the company's finances; it had hemorrhaged several of its subsidiary companies by the global financial crisis in 2008, during which it received a bailout from the U.S. government. The Future, and the Volt

Despite its financial difficulties, Chevrolet has continued planning for the future. Despite a high retail price, the car is eligible for government incentives because of its environmentally-friendly design, and is one of the first hybrid electric cars available to consumers in the United States.

A little boy was walking down a dirt road after church one Sunday afternoon when he came to a crossroads where he met a little girl coming from the other direction.

'Hi,' replied the little girl.
'Where are you going?' asked the little boy.
'I've been to church this morning and I'm on my way home,' answered the little girl.
'I'm also on my way home from church. Which church do you go to?' asked the little boy.
'I go to the Catholic church back down the road,' replied the little girl. 'What about you? '

'I go to the Lutheran church back at the top of the hill,' replied the little boy.
They discover that they are both going the same way so they decided that they'd walk together.
They came to a low spot in the road where spring rains had partially flooded the road, so there was no way that they could get across to the other side without getting wet.
'If I get my new Sunday dress wet, my Mom's going to skin me alive,' said the little girl.
'My Mom'll tan my hide, too, if I get my new Sunday suit wet,' replied the little boy.
'I'll tell you what I think I'll do,' said the little girl. 'I'm gonna pull off all my clothes and hold them over my head and wade across.'
'That's a good idea,'replied the little boy. 'I'm going to do the same thing with my suit.'

So they both undressed and waded across to the other side without getting their clothes wet. They were standing there in the sun waiting to drip dry before putting their clothes back on, when the little boy finally remarked:

'You know, I never realized before just how much difference there really is between a

Don't look down!

The terrifying see-through path stuck to a Chinese cliff-face 4,000ft above a rocky ravine

It is certainly not a path for the faint-hearted.

On one side a sheer rock face, on the other a 4,000ft drop - and all to separate the brave traveller from a deadly plunge is a 3ft-wide, 2.5in thick walkway.

And if that is not enough to bring terror into the pit of your stomach, the path running alongside a Chinese mountainside is made out of glass, allowing a crystal-clear view of where one false step can take you.

So it was perhaps understandable that this woman tackled the walkway by sticking as close to the cliff as possible, feeling her way along with tentative steps.

The skywalk is situated 4,700ft above sea level on the side of the Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, China.

The 200ft long bridge joins the west cliff at the Yunmeng Fairy Summit, the summit of Tianmen Mountain and Zhang Jiajie.

And it would appear to be too scary for the cleaners - tourists are asked to put on shoe covers before passing to help keep the path clean.

The pathway, built earlier in the summer echoes the glass-bottomed walkway at the Grand Canyon in the U.S.

The 70ft bridge is 4,000ft above the natural wonder and allows tourists to look through 2.5in of crystal-clear glass to the Canyon floor below.

The Tianmen mountain, literally translated as Heavenly Gate Mountain is so called because of a huge natural cave that occurs halfway up to the summit.

Situated in the Hunan Province, Its highest peak is around 5,000ft above sea level and it is home to a wealth of rare species of plants

A four-mile-long cable car was constructed in the park, which is said to be the longest of the same type in the world.

And no matter how terrifying the glass walkway may be - it can only be an improvement from another sky high mountain walkway located in the same province.

The Shifou Mountain, located 82 miles away, offers sightseers a 3ft-wide road made of wooden planks thousands of feet high.

When finished the wooden 'road' - which is the width of a dinner table - will stretch for 1.8miles making it China's longest sightseeing path.
