So the pre-headline in this example sales letter reads, "If you're a writer, ghostwriter, copywriter or article writer..."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Headline Hook&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The purpose of a headline in a sales letter is to grab their attention, and to get them to read the next paragraph. For example: "Here's how to ask for, and get, more money for your writing service right now..."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In this headline, I focused on the biggest benefit of the product, which is to get more money from your writing service. However, it doesn't have to be the biggest benefit, as long as it grabs their attention and compels them to read on. Notice how I also phrased the headline: "Here's how to..." You only get the solution IF you read on!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Paragraphs Of Power&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The first two or three paragraphs are critically important, because it's where the visitor will decide whether or not to give you their full attention. So in this example sales letter, I DON'T first talk about myself - instead, I ask the reader three "Have you ever..." questions, examples of which are:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;"As a writer, have you ever found yourself frustrated..."&lt;br /&gt;"Have you ever felt you wanted to charge more..."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This gets them involved, and if they answer "Yes!" in their minds to any of these, then I've got them thinking they &lt;em&gt;want to&lt;/em&gt; find out more. Then I say, "If you've ever felt or experienced ANY of these things, then pay careful attention to what I'm about to tell you in the next 5 minutes." This gives them a &lt;em&gt;reason&lt;/em&gt; to keep reading. Remember, your visitors will read only so long as it's INTERESTING and RELEVANT to them.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Subheadline Story&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;My next section immediately starts with a subheadline: "I promise this will help." In fact, I use subheadlines throughout my sales letters, and you'll want to tell the story in your subheadlines too, because many readers will first SKIM THE SALES LETTER to determine whether they want to even bother reading it.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So I always make the subheadlines tell their own story. For example, these are the first four subheadlines in the example sales letter, and notice how they tell a story for the skimmer:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;"I promise this will help."&lt;br /&gt;"It's time we did something about it..."&lt;br /&gt;"We face two big problems."&lt;br /&gt;"How to tackle them both, and make more money..."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Each one is also designed to "hook" the reader into wanting to read that section. For example, if you're a sales letter skimmer and you saw, "We face two big problems", you might want to know what those problems are! If so, you'll read the sales letter more carefully.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Bullet Points Build Desire&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I consider bullet points to be one of most important aspects of a sales letter, because they are easy to read, and they can "sum up" the benefits and reasons to buy, in an easy to view format.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Each bullet point should highlight a particular feature of your product or service, and the ultimate benefits of having that feature, or the consequences of &lt;em&gt;not&lt;/em&gt; having it. For example, here's a bullet point from the example sales letter:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;* How Would You Like No Competition? How to COMPLETELY distinguish your writing service from everybody else, so clients want to use YOU, and ONLY YOU! (p44-54)&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I have 19 bullet points in that sales letter. Personally, I recommend you have a bullet point for each feature of your product, convert them into benefits, and be sure to make them compelling!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;These are some of the critical elements of a good sales letter. You can really replace your old,&lt;br /&gt;worn-out exam table and only pay $417 out of your pocket&lt;br /&gt;(But only if you are one of the first 2 people to respond&lt;br /&gt;to this letter.)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let me explain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;------Side Note Comments------&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;Your first sentence is absolutely critical to your letter.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;If your first sentence doesn't make people want to keep&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;reading, you can expect your letter to end up in the&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;circular file. So make sure it keeps their interest piqued&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;and follow up on the headline promise in the first&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;sentence.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;In the first sentence I reiterate the fact that yes they&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;really can get a brand new power table for such a low&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;price. The second sentence I throw in a little scarcity&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;right at the beginning of the letter so they won't just&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;toss this letter aside for further reading.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; color: rgb(51, 51, 255);"&gt;------End Comments------&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Last April, our little company took a big gamble and signed&lt;br /&gt;up for a power table promotion. In order to get on the&lt;br /&gt;promotion we had to agree to take 3 power tables - nearly&lt;br /&gt;$15,000. Helping to direct them to that information before they click away to another site is thus very important.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Meanwhile, if you need them to read ALL your information, for your own ends you need to write in a way then reduces the skimming.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:Red;"&gt;A few good rules of thumb include:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Having a summary of page content at the top of the page in bullet list form.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some sites link directly to that paragraph for quick location by the reader. This is very helpful!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Having a summary of your main services and benefits on every page.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is important as a reader might find your site not via the main page but via one of the other pages. If they don't know via that page what you do, they might not stick around long enough to find out.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;&lt;span style="color:Red;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Basics of writing for the Internet&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:Black;"&gt;Short paragraphs 3-4 lines max&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:Black;"&gt;Bullet point lists  (breaks up blocks of text - allows easy access to info)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:Black;"&gt;Bold important words that the user might find of interest&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;span style="color:Black;"&gt;Headings for paragraphs&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Try to write as if speaking to the reader&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Keep content concise&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Do not be verbose, not every reader has English as a first language and everyone in not educated to degree level.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;If you have space, leave a line between each bullet point for extra visibility  (As I have done here)&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Avoid white on a coloured background - it requires more 'effort' to read. Some cool sites favour white on black. Jury is out on how effective that is. My opinion is not as effective as black on white.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.wilsonweb.com/wmt6/html-email-fonts.htm"&gt;Size 12 -14 Ariel&lt;/a&gt; font is preferable to small, fancy font. Again it's easier to read.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Don't clutter your page with distractions unless you want the user to stop reading and view that distraction. Ie moving banners, popups etc.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Music isn't a good one as people have different music tastes. Just listen to&lt;br /&gt;that thing over and over again.  He talks about cheerful&lt;br /&gt;expectancy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There's a big difference between having expectancy versus&lt;br /&gt;hoping or wishing something is going to occur.  When you&lt;br /&gt;have that cheerful expectancy, you know it's going to&lt;br /&gt;occur.  And that doesn't just come from being&lt;br /&gt;"Pollyannaish" or having rose-colored glasses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It comes from having knowledge.  And you get that&lt;br /&gt;knowledge from studying in your field whatever it is. It&lt;br /&gt;could be Internet marketing or it could be neurology. That&lt;br /&gt;means reading, studying and buying everything and&lt;br /&gt;absolutely immersing yourself in it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I learned from Earl Nightingale that if you want to be an&lt;br /&gt;expert, you spend an hour a day reading on whatever&lt;br /&gt;subject that you're interested in, that you want to be an&lt;br /&gt;expert on. So I said, "Well, what would happen if I read&lt;br /&gt;for three hours a day?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I just started learning as much as I possibly could, and&lt;br /&gt;that knowledge gives you the confidence to know that you&lt;br /&gt;have that positive expectancy. Your expectations determine&lt;br /&gt;your results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;* Secret #2:  Do one proactive thing a day *&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You don't need to do 100 things a day.  Just get that one&lt;br /&gt;proactive thing a day.  So each little brick builds a big&lt;br /&gt;wall for you.  Trust me it's easy to be overwhelmed with&lt;br /&gt;hundreds of tasks.  You're like, "Oh, we need to do e-zine&lt;br /&gt;ads and free-for-alls and pay-per-click search engines,&lt;br /&gt;and I need to do all this other stuff." Ahhhhhhhhhhh!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;But just relax and do one task a day.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your action will create more and more and more action for&lt;br /&gt;you. You simply need to make a commitment to do one&lt;br /&gt;proactive thing a day no matter what. Even if you're dead&lt;br /&gt;tired and worked a 14-hour day - come home and mail one&lt;br /&gt;letter or send out one joint venture proposal. I'm telling&lt;br /&gt;you - just these little tiny proactive things will have an&lt;br /&gt;immense impact.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most everyone has heard of the '80/20 rule' or the Pareto&lt;br /&gt;Principle. It says that 20% of your actions produce 80% of&lt;br /&gt;your results, and the other way around.  80% of your work&lt;br /&gt;only creates 20% of your results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So go back and look where your successes came from, and I&lt;br /&gt;know that they're from a tiny little group of actions.  So&lt;br /&gt;if you just get that one proactive thing a day (from the&lt;br /&gt;20% group) that is going to propel you further, that's&lt;br /&gt;going to bring you to where you want to be.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Make it a point to focus on those "20% activities". In&lt;br /&gt;Stephen Covey's famous work "7 Habits of Highly Effective&lt;br /&gt;People" he calls these activities "important but not&lt;br /&gt;urgent".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of my Apprentices, Peter Woodhead, from the UK is a&lt;br /&gt;perfect example of simply doing one proactive thing a day.&lt;br /&gt;A lot of Apprentices bolted out of the gate during our one&lt;br /&gt;year program but Peter was an Internet newbie and he also&lt;br /&gt;had a full time job so he was a bit slower getting&lt;br /&gt;started. However, he took my advice and simply managed to&lt;br /&gt;do one proactive thing every single day. No matter how big&lt;br /&gt;or how small. It could be writing one autoresponder&lt;br /&gt;message or it might have been writing 50 headlines. No&lt;br /&gt;matter the day - Peter was moving ahead. And not&lt;br /&gt;surprisingly his project was completed before many of the&lt;br /&gt;other Apprentices were finished.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;* Secret #3:  Decision  *&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is such a big point.  A lot of people have so many&lt;br /&gt;problems with decision.  That's because they don't like it&lt;br /&gt;because it cuts off other options.  But frankly that's&lt;br /&gt;exactly what you want.  You want to cut off other options.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of our top apprentices, Cindy Kappler, WebAdMagic.com,&lt;br /&gt;had no other option but to succeed because she quit her&lt;br /&gt;job.  Now I'm not encouraging you to do that if you still&lt;br /&gt;have a real job but it does prove if you cut off your&lt;br /&gt;options, you're much more motivated. Successful people&lt;br /&gt;make decisions quickly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There's a magic of attraction when you make your decision.&lt;br /&gt;However, when you're hemming and hawing, you don't&lt;br /&gt;experience this magic.  I don't want to get into too much&lt;br /&gt;woo-woo or metaphysical or spiritual stuff.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But there's this magic of attraction.  I can't even&lt;br /&gt;explain it.  When you set your mind up that you're going&lt;br /&gt;to do this, all of a sudden, at the next dinner party&lt;br /&gt;you're attending you meet somebody that can help you get&lt;br /&gt;to where you want to go.  Is that luck or is that&lt;br /&gt;something else?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;I don't think it's luck.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It's like once the decision is made your mind is tuned&lt;br /&gt;into the solution and all kinds of 'freaky' coincidences&lt;br /&gt;and occurrences happen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And that brings me to another important point about&lt;br /&gt;decisions - fail quickly. Don't be afraid of failure.  A&lt;br /&gt;lot of people are so afraid of screwing up, or making a&lt;br /&gt;mistake that they are forever frozen.  Who the hell cares?&lt;br /&gt;Screw up quickly!  I screw up all the time.  And you want&lt;br /&gt;to fail quickly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That's the great part about the Internet.  You want to go&lt;br /&gt;out there and find out if your dumb idea is going to work&lt;br /&gt;right away. You can do it in days instead of months.&lt;br /&gt;Sometimes hours and if it doesn't work, you move on.  You&lt;br /&gt;say, "Next!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Look, I know a lot of people who are working on their&lt;br /&gt;products for the last two, three, four years. I will still be the first to admit that I am not the best when it comes to professional writing, but I have become effective in the markets where I work.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I have been asked by many small business owners that I have worked with over the years to review their copy, or to help them write a sales letter. I very much enjoy being able to offer suggestions and point out techniques that I have learned that will improve the effectiveness of their letters.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Most people could do very well with sales letters if they would just learn some basics that they can apply on a consistent basis. So, what are the basics and how do you acquire them?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;First, you need to know to whom you are writing. If you already have a business you probably know more about your business, product, service and customer than anybody else. Writing with that understanding is easy. A good technique is to make a list of the characteristics of your customers, your products and so on. It will help you to become better organized. Second, do some or all of the following:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;1. Get books written by successful professionals such as Richard Benson, Dan Kennedy, Joe Sugarman and the many others that have been successful over the years. My best results have come from listening to Dan Kennedy and studying his books and materials.&lt;br /&gt;2. Apply your own insight, intuition, observations and common sense, especially with respect to how it applies to the characteristics of your customers, products, services, etc.&lt;br /&gt;3. Translate what you know and discover about selling and communicating in person to communicating in print. &lt;br /&gt;4. Build a huge swipe file, with sample ads, and sales letters. You do not need much creativity to write letters, you only need to be good at recycling and reorganizing ideas, themes, words and phrases.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Keep in mind that for most small businesses, you do not need the same skill level that top copywriters working for Fortune 500 companies need. You will typically be competing in an environment where the top copywriters are not involved. You may have heard the saying that "In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Most professional sales letter writers give themselves the advantage of careful, thorough preparation and you should too. Here are some general ideas to help you get started:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;1. Do not be intimidated by the idea or process of writing. There is no magic to it and you do not need to be a genius.&lt;br /&gt;2. Recognize the value and power of your unique understanding of your business, products, services and customers. &lt;br /&gt;3. Assemble and organize ideas and samples in a swipe file.&lt;br /&gt;4. Assemble and organize good reference materials. &lt;br /&gt;5. Sales letters are just sales presentations in print, so &lt;u&gt;think selling&lt;/u&gt;. Successful selling experience helps. If you do not have a selling mentality get one by reading some good books about selling. &lt;br /&gt;6. Write! Don't worry about writing a letter from start to finish, just write blocks of copy. A lot of great sales letters are done by cutting and pasting.&lt;br /&gt;7. Avoid perfectionism.
