Acoustic or Electric guitar?

For a beginner , there is always a doubt in their mind whether to buy an electric or an acoustic guitar.

There is a saying that 'by starting in an acoustic guitar you can build up finger strength and it will help to double your performance in electric guitar'.

Really?

Yes,it may not double your performance but it will really help to improve your performance in electric guitar.

Acoustic strings are harder than electric guitar and it requires more pressure to play notes and you may feel difficult in playing barre chords but you can overcome these problems within weeks by continuous practise.

Starting in an electric guitar will not downgrade you.Electric guitar is much easier to play and it sounds good because of it's thinner strings and neck.But it requires amps, cords and power and it will increase your budget.

Some of the guitar teacher's prefer electric guitar for beginner's in order to make them comfortable in learning guitar.Most of the beginners who started in acoustic guitar leave their passion for guitar only because they feel that learning guitar is very hard, in order to overcome the situation guitar teachers prefer electric guitar.But the real fact is that if you have real passion for guitar or music you can overcome all such difficulties.

My opinion is to start with acoustic guitar.( i am not saying it because i also started with an acoustic guitar)

Advantages of acoustic guitar;

You can build up finger strength,
Cheap in price,
Most of the guitarists switch into new guitars as they become experts and to suit new musical styles.It is a fact that you have to change it or buy a new guitar without trading the existing one,
Acoustic guitar can be played anywhere. No amp or power is required.

Guitar tuning

Your guitar will need to be tuned before playing. You can tune your guitar by using an

Electronic tuner (more accurate),
Tuning fork ,
Keyboard,
Tuned guitar or
with your Ear.

Here I am going to explain about how to tune your guitar with ear. In the beginning you may take more than 10 Min's or may even get frustrated. Every time before playing guitar you should check the tune and make changes as necessary. Guitar tuning is the process of adjusting the temper of strings to harmonise pitch.

Steps to tune your guitar

Put your finger on the fifth fret of the sixth string (which is A note) and play it, then play the sixth string and open fifth string (A note).Listen to the two pitches, if the fifth string sounds lower then tighten the fifth string tuning key until the A note on the fifth string and A note on the sixth string match (becomes same pitch) and vice versa.

Next, Play the fifth string, fifth fret (D), then tune your open fourth string (D) Listen to the two pitches carefully and adjust the open fourth string accordingly.

Play the fourth string fifth fret (G), then tune your open fourth string (G) accordingly.

Play the third string, 'fourth fret' (B), then tune your open second string (B) until they sound the same.(in this part fourth fret is used instead of fifth fret to tune second string)

Play the second string, fifth fret (E), then tune your open first string (E) to it.

Some guitarists prefer to tune guitar in the reverse order. That is, they start at the first string open note and moves to higher strings. Just as opposite to the method I mentioned above. The main reason why i prefer this pattern of tuning is that sixth string being the thickest string is least likely to detune itself than any others string.Before tuning your guitar make sure that sixth string is in correct pitch. If you have access to key board or any other tuned guitar, tune your sixth string to the pitch of E note of that instrument if possible.

The archtop guitar was invented by 'Orville Gibson', founder of the 'Gibson Guitar Corporation' .An archtop guitar is a steel-stringed acoustic or semi-acoustic guitar with a full body and a distinctive arched top, whose sound is particularly popular with jazz players .Among the features of this instrument were a violin-style arched top and back, each carved from a single piece of wood.

The 'f' holes of violin replaced the usual round sound hole of guitar. These instruments have a carved arched top and back. The top or belly (and often the back) of the archtop guitar is either carved out of a block of solid wood, or heat-pressed using lamination's, and the belly normally has two f-holes, the lower of these partly covered by a scratch plate raised above the belly so as not to damp its vibration. The arching of the top and the f-holes are similar to the violin family, on which they were originally based.

How long should i practise guitar?

It’s a usual question hanging around the newbie guitarists about the time devoted to master guitar on each day or in a week....the fact is that it’s not how long you practise, its how you practise is important. You must have a burning desire and love for music you must be self motivated, inspired and dedicated for music. You may not able to practise guitar for a long time due to your job, education, social life etc...Finding time to practise guitar may be a difficult one....but I'm sure that if you are driven by passion for guitar (not by the compulsion of parents) you will make time for your quest for music.

If you are a beginner or an intermediate level guitarist who knows some kind of chords and scales, preparing to follow a training schedule or to practise on free time ,you have to spend at least 30 Min's or 1 hr per day. If you have time you can move up to 2 to 3 hrs per day. The fact is that how long you practise guitar or any musical instrument, you will become perfect to that extent. The more you train the more you earn. Practising has positive effect on your output. In order to practise efficiently you must driven by motivation. Before starting your practise session dream yourself as a famous guitarist composing music or doing rock n roll on his guitar on stage or the performance of the guitarist you like the most. You don't have to practise continuously, break your practising sections to 15 Min's / 20 Min's sections. That is 20 Min's in morning, noon, evening etc...If you can find time ,you can also practise in one stretch by taking a 10 Min's intervals on every 20 or 30 Min's as you are capable of. While practising a song chord or a scale always start at a low tempo and do not increase tempo without making it perfect. By this way you can master any song. You don’t have to stick to the traditional hours-a-day formula .Practise whenever you got time. If you don't have time make time!

In addition to those practising sections you must play it whenever you have time. Don’t waste your time on watching television or doing blah blah in Internet. Be a musician and make others watch you!

A dotted note is represented as a note followed by a single dot.It is used to increase the duration of note.It changes the rhythmic value of the note.In simple terms dotted note is played by playing the note with actual duration plus half of the duration of the note. ie (value of the note+1/2 of the value).

If the note is a dotted half note,it has the duration of 3 beats(2 beats of half note+1/2 of the 2 beats).Similarly if the note is a dotted whole note,it will have the duration of 6 beats(4 beats of whole note+1/2 of the 4 beats).Dots add one half of the value of note which is attached with it.

What?

The role of a guitar amplifier is to make the guitar signal audible.Amplifiers are used in both electric guitar and acoustic guitar connected with pickups.Actually there is no necessity for an amp in acoustic guitar.Electric guitar do not produce any sound like acoustic guitar unless it is connected with an amp.

How?

Vibrations in the strings are picked up by pick up coils/microphone and then it is amplified by the amp and make it audible through a speaker.

In electric guitar musicians often seek out the distortion guitar amplifiers. Distortion is the result of a signal overloading an amplifier's circuitry.In most of the amplifiers guitarist can control distortion levels.In addition to distortion, guitarists often use feedback loops. if sound from the speaker is loud, it will cause the strings to vibrate.A feedback loop results when the guitarist hits a note, leading the amplifier to cause that string to vibrate indefinitely.

things to kept in mind while using amplifiers

When your amplifier is not in use make sure that the power cord is unplugged from the mains outlet, and that all leads are removed from the amplifier, including jack leads and foot switch leads.
Never modify the power cord without consulting your dealer or a qualified electrician and do not attempt to use it with a two pin outlet.
Ensure that the loudspeaker is connected before you switch the amplifier on.
Never try to operate the amplifier without the speaker connected. If you do, serious damage to the amplifier will result which will be expensive to repair.
Double check the connections you have made to your amplifier and make sure that you have connected the speaker to the correct outlet socket that matches the cabinet you are using.
Always operate the amplifier at the lowest level .
Before turning your amp on, be sure the volume knobs on your amps are turned down low.

You may not understand about reading tabs , which is entirely different from sheet music. But it is the most easiest way for writing songs even it has its own limitations.

In guitar tabs,there will be total six lines ,which represent six strings of Guitar ( E A D G B E)

here you have to play the first note on 7th fret (F# note) and then slide the finger without releasing that note down to 5th fret (E note).

Resonator guitar

Dead note

A dead note is achieved by lightly placing your hand across the strings without actually pressing the strings against the fret. it produces a muted sound. it is represented by the symbol 'x'

How to choose guitar?

Selecting a guitar from a wide range of guitars is not a crucial role ,but selecting a guitar which absolutely suit your requirements is an important task.

There are lot of articles in inter net about how to buy or choose a guitar . So there is no necessity for repeating it . i am pointing out some of which i consider useful for choosing your machine.

If your plan is to buy from a retailer shop:

choose some guitar which you find attractive or which you found suits you(because rest of your life with music is depended on it) and which will cost within your budget.
choose the appropriate guitar size which suits your age
judge each guitar by feel, sound, and appeal
check for any cracks ,bends etc...
& finally play some songs & check the accuracy of sounds.

tips:- If you are a beginner, choose "Acoustic guitar" because acoustic guitar is considerably harder than electric guitar. By starting out on acoustic, you can build up finger strength, and then if you choose to switch to electric, all of the little scratches and creaks you hear won't be there

always try to consult your guitar trainer or seek help from a friend who knows guitar or familiar with musical instruments.

while checking the tone of guitar , ask your retailer to set standard tuning if possible.
