But in recent times, there is a shift in automotive fuel. Eco-friendly alternate fuels are taking the place of petrol and diesel. Let us examine the top 5 alternate fuels of the future:
Ethanol
Ethanol is a clean burning fuel produced domestically from corn and other crop. It is much cheaper than petrol and diesel and also produces less greenhouse gas emissions. It is not directly filled in the engine but is mixed with petrol at different concentrations. E10 is a blend of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline and is also known as gasohol. In few countries even E85 is used that is a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. There are possibilities that the concentration of ethanol will increase to 95% so that the amount of emissions can be drastically reduced.
Adding ethanol to gasoline helps to clean and complete combustion that not only improves performance but also reduces emissions. The reduction in emissions is attributed to the presence of oxygen factor that causes clean and complete combustion.
Biodiesel
Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative fuel derived from animal fats and vegetable oils. The fuel does not contain any petroleum but can be blended with petroleum-based diesel to use as a fuel for vehicles. It has lower emissions as compared to diesel and is far better for safeguarding the environment. That is the reason why many car manufacturers today are researching more on the usage and significance of biodiesel as future fuel.
One key advantage of using biodiesel is that it is produced using renewable sources such as soybeans. This in turn reduces dependencies on imported oil and majorly contributes to nation's economy.
Hydrogen
Hydrogen can be domestically produced from fossil fuels such as coal. It is one of the most unbelievable but fuel-efficient fuels that will redefine the destiny of future cars. It is believed that hydrogen can easily drive a vehicle without emitting any pollutants.
Any car or other vehicles pull water into the combustion unit where the water molecules form hydroxyl gas. This gas is further pulled into the engine's carburetor to power the vehicle. The engine then emits water vapour that is completely free of harmful pollutants. It is also tested that the use of hydrogen will also result in smooth and quiet operation delivering more torque and better acceleration.
Hydrogen fuel is yet not available in the market but few car manufacturers including BMW are testing the reliability and credibility of hydrogen to power vehicles.
Compressed Air
Compressed air is soon going to become a popular alternative fuel to run cars. The basic principle of running cars purely on air is to feed the stored air under pressure to the engine to generate torque. The future cars powered by air will have huge storage tanks filled with compressed air preferably made of carbon-fibre to reduce weight whilst maintaining strength of the engine.
The use of air will effectively reduce the cost of the car because in such a case there will be no need to build spark plugs and cooling system. It will also result in reduced emissions and lower cost of running. Tata Motors has already started its venture with a French-based technology inventor, MDI to produce the world's first air car.
Solar Energy
The use of solar energy to drive vehicles is a rare concept but is gradually making its position as one of the most significant future fuels. The simple concept is based on the energy received from the sunlight.
Vehicles powered with solar energy are actually electric vehicles that tap solar energy with the help of solar panels fitted on the roof of the vehicles. These solar panels comprise of photovoltaic cells that convert the sun's energy directly into electrical energy. Though the concept is not practical for day-to-day transportation, it is expected to be a part of the future car industry.
When oil is up, many people build alternative energy technologies, only to watch the value of their investment die when the price of oil declines.
We saw this happen in 1986 when the price sank to $10 per barrel and ethanol refineries were being given away by state governments that had taken them for unpaid taxes. This is now happening because the price of oil has fallen from $150 to $35 in just a few months.
Thus, the ideal energy source must have an equivalent price below the lowest possible price of oil. According to the Financial Times, the Mideast price of oil is about $30 per barrel.
How do the alterative energy sources compare? Oil shale and coal to liquid cost the equivalent of $100 per barrel. Oil sands maybe $85. US ethanol costs about $65.Onshore wind costs $75.
We have a massive investment in fossil fuel infrastructure. Our challenge now is to convert this infrastructure to a new fuel. According to the IEA, about 80% of our energy base is fossil fuel. Years would be needed to convert our electric power plants from coal to anything different. To switch from oil, we have to change the production system from oil wells and refineries to something else, and change over countless gas stations and vehicles. Even if we have the right technology, do we have enough money?
We must have an energy source that needs the least amount of capital investment in its production system, one that can convert our existing diesel and gasoline engines and gas turbines to the new fuel.
Finally, even if we have the right system, do we have the time? How many years will be needed to change a large amount of our energy mix to a new system? Predictions are that by 2030, over 20 years from now, fossil fuels still will be two-thirds of the mix. It seems that we do not anticipate a real solution to fossil fuels.
So the ideal alternative fuel solution, the answer to our energy problems would have at least these characteristics: (1) cheap variable cost, below $30 per barrel equivalent of oil, (2) predictable cost, (3) low capital cost for production facilities and delivery systems and other infrastructure, (4) provide a fuel that can be used in existing infrastructure, (5) and a fuel that can with be implemented rapidly implemented at a low cost. This would be the ideal alternative energy, the ideal alternative fuel, the real answer to our energy problems.

With the deterioration of Arctic ice caps and the frenzy for more crude oil, we need to start looking at alternative fuels. One of the top alternative fuels is propane, a byproduct of natural gas processing and crude oil refining.
According to the Propane Education & Research Council, "propane provides great value because it burns hotter and more efficiently than many other energy sources". Statistics show that: 1. A propane furnace can heat air up to 25 degrees warmer,2. Propane gives off less than half of the greenhouse emissions compared to electricity, and 3. Propane appliances have a shorter energy savings payback period.
(© 2008 by the Propane Education & Research Council)
Many household appliances already use propane including clothes dryers, fireplaces, furnaces, grills, generators, pool heaters, space heaters, and more. Your propane furnace can last up to 20 years whereas electric pumps usually only last up to 12 years. It is also cheaper to repair propane gas furnaces than electric heaters. Propane fueled space heaters are 99.9 efficient and have oxygen depletion sensors that shut the unit off if oxygen levels become too low. Thus creating a safer environment in the household. In your lifetime, using propane gas water heaters can save homeowners up to $2,000 more than electric water heaters. Think of all the things you can use that money for especially with today's economic hardships. Propane fueled fireplaces emit 40 times fewer emissions than wood burning fireplaces and also cost a lot less to operate.
So, why not use propane? Approximately 8.1 million households now utilize propane creating more cost effective uses for everyday appliances. Think of all the benefits of turning to propane: a better environment for our children in the future and more money we can save right now. It's time to start taking responsibility for the future of our environment.
Resources:
Propane Education & Research Council http://www.propanecouncil.org and
National Propane Gas Association http://www.npga.org
Switch grass is an amazingly easy to produce grass that can be converted to ethanol. Ethanol holds lots of promise as an alternative to gasoline.
When you look at all the benefits of switch grass, it's hard to believe that it isn't being touted more heavily. Switch grass could not only replace some fossil fuels use, it could help alleviate the damage done by years of burning fossil fuels as well.
Switch grass might be thought of as a weed by some, which probably explains its lowly status. But switch grass was elevated to a new, lofty place when President Bush brought it up in his 2006 State of the Union address.
Switch grass has many worthwhile and useful qualities. Chief among them is how easy it is to grow.
Switch grass grows abundantly in the Great Plains and is native to large parts of North America. Picture yourself driving through the Midwest, when you gaze out the window you're looking at lots of switch grass.
cattle, horses, sheep and goats all love to munch of switch grass.
Unlike most plants, switch grass is not picky about soil and conditions. It's incredibly easy to grow even in clay or sand, flood or drought. A gardener's dream plant. Remember, it "grows like a weed."
Switch grass could be a new bumper crop for American farmers, who are being financially squeezed from a million directions.
Not only that, but switch grass can be used to purify water. It's roots can take pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizer out of water before it reaches the main waterways. this trait alone makes it useful.
Now as if all that weren't enough, the humble switch grass plant can even help in our efforts to clean the air. Switch grass cleans the air because it absorbs carbon dioxide, that nasty green house gas.
Many places are already experimenting with switch grass as a source for energy, either as pellets for burning or converting it to ethanol.
Democratic Senator Joseph Lieberman has already brought up switch grass as a cure for international tensions over competition for fossil fuels. Noting our growing competition for fuel with China before the Counsel on Foreign Relations, Lieberman suggested lots of agricultural products like switch grass, corn and sugar can be used to create new sources of fuel to power our cars and keep our houses warm.
In a world of dependence on fossil fuels and rising gas prices, it is critical to find new sources of alternative energy. In this case, we may have to look no farther than America's "amber waves of grain."

But the soaring prices of crude oil in the world market and the increased demand for diesel have significantly increased diesel fuel prices, especially in July 2008. While it is becoming cheaper now, no one really knows if diesel prices will stay at its current low price level. And so technologists, scientists and environmentalists have developed alternative fuel to fight the soaring cost of fuel prices including diesel and gasoline.
Biodiesel
Originally, the diesel engine was designed to run on vegetable seed oil or peanut oil. But since petroleum fuel was cheaper then, people have forgotten that diesel engine can run on these natural oils. Now, it is making a comeback. Biodiesel, as we know it today, can be soybean oil, animal fats, vegetable oil or recycled restaurant grease. The good thing is, any diesel engine can run effectively on B20 (a mixture of 20 parts biodiesel and 80 parts petroleum diesel). These natural oils are clean and biodegradable. Biodiesel has lower carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulates emissions. LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) LPG is a byproduct of petroleum refining, which are widely used for home heating and cooking, can be a substitute to diesel fuel. LPG is cheaper than all petroleum products. It contains hydrocarbons and vapor at its normal pressure and temperature. Its main component is propane. LPG is widely available and can be used as an alternative fuel with a conversion kit.
Ethanol (E85)
Ethanol is made from fermented biomass, usually corn. Completely biodegradable and renewable, ethanol is clean and doesn't contribute to greenhouse gas emission. It got the name, E85 because it is composed of 85% alcohol and 15% gasoline. Although it is becoming widely available today and can be used on any diesel engine vehicle, E85 is pricier than other types of alternative fuel.
Methanol
Methanol is naturally abundant on earth or can be made by fermenting biomass. It is somewhat similar to ethanol. However, the availability of methanol is still a problem.
Electricity
The two main issues of electric cars are: it cannot cope with the current traffic and battery life. But with the release of the first sports car that runs on pure electricity Tesla these 2 issues are put to rest. However, the technology has yet to completely take off. There may be developments here and there but aside from Tesla, there are very few (plug-in) electric cars on the market today. Aside from this, electric cars are very expensive. The next best option, then, is to go hybrid. Hybrid cars have electric motor and diesel or gasoline engine (there are other types of hybrid cars). Although they are more expensive than regular cars with diesel or gasoline engine, they have the best fuel mileage the market can readily offer.
Hydrogen
The most abundant element on earth is hydrogen so it is only fitting to use it as a form of energy. But you cannot get hydrogen for free; it can be made by electrically splitting (electrolyze) water to its basic components hydrogen and oxygen. In a sense, a hydrogen-powered car runs on water. Unfortunately, the market has yet to see mass-produced hydrogen cars. You may have noticed that almost all alternative fuels have a problem of their own. But with the undergoing development and constant research, it won't be long before we see our vehicles running effectively from any of these alternative fuels.
Read more: http://www.articlesbase.com/automotive-articles/alternative-fuel-to-fight-diesel-fuel-prices-4354265.html#ixzz1FzSZ83i5
Under Creative Commons License: Attribution

The eco system has brought out the fact that gas burning vehicles are harmful to the atmosphere and to human beings. We need to be better concerned about earth and what we are doing that is causing it to become destroyed. Some consumers are crying for us to use our own oil instead of continuously going abroad for what we need. The problem with that is we would have to destroy the natural habitat of certain wild animals as well as the earth. We would have to drill in the wilds of Alaska which is our last frontier when it comes to earths beauty and abundance of all natural environments. What price should we pay in order to drive our gasoline fueled vehicles? Many people are greatly concerned and feel that an alternative fuel would best suit our needs.
There are now many alternative fuels that could provide our vehicles with power and save our eco system. Farther, it has been discovered that some alternative fuels are being made from crops such as corn or oats which makes them environmentally safe and helps the American farmer. There are some alternative fuels that come from emissions let loose from landfills. We need to look to the future care of the earth and start maintaining our eco system. We cannot exist without earth it is our home and as human beings we have no other place to go. It may sound foolish to think that a few gasoline driven vehicles could upset the balance of nature but it is not. When we upset the balance of nature then we indeed risk destroying our world and all the inhabitants.
Using alternative fuels like hydrogen, propane, natural gas, ethanol, electricity and the many other sources is much more desirable than that of destroying the world that we live in. We need to think of not only today but we need to think of the future that our children and their children will have living on earth. Many auto manufacturers are seriously considering changing the engines in the new vehicles to operate on alternative fuels rather than the continuous use of gasoline. Many economists are afraid that if we stop using the gasoline based engine that our economy will go even farther in the red causing another great depression. The truth is that we can survive not using oil based gasoline for our vehicles and that by using alternative fuel we might save our economy. We no longer would have to depend on foreign countries for our energy supplies. This would increase our own economy production of fuel based products making our country that much stronger financially. As life goes on, we all soon realize how much the fuel industry has changed. In the meantime, we can only sit back and watch the industry grow.
His aim was to use less Energy as compared when he was not using the machine.
like the rivers the early machines were all driven by the way of animals. in order to make the work more easier many changes were being done and many things were discovered fast. This has lead to the discovery of crude oil, which has been used for almost a century to drive man machines. These machines have been effective and faster and allow production of large quantities of products. man with this discovery was able to travel very comfortably and quickly. it was made easy to circulate news quickly to wide area.
but the discovery has come with a price for it. the invention made by him has changed his life and started threatening his existence. the environment, health the moral value of the earth is being affected by the invention of machines and petroleum production made from crude oil. the world that man expected for better has turned to be miserable for him. we can hear about rising of sea level, global warming and many one news everyday. the lives on earth would become a question if this continues long. the invention of machines have started creating many health problem. it is very miserable that his own invention on earth the cure oil is killing his own people and race on earth.
isn't this a contrary of the expectation of humans? now he started doing many research to find an alternative for the fuel source. May be alternative fuel source will redeem man from the curses of the crude oil he had high hope earlier. the hydrogen fuel cell, geothermal, ethanol, are being used already as an alternative. still many researchers are being done to find alternative for the crude oil for reducing the impacts caused by it.

in order to save the earth governments are ready to spend and are spending more money for improving the nuclear power, hydrogen fuel cells and the geothermal. So far, many alternative source of energy have proved worth in research over the petroleum, but it has not yet gained the muscle to outdo the petroleum products in the retail market.
Polk, a record-breaking number of alternative fuel vehicles were sold during the first quarter of this year. The study reported that there were 434,000 alternative fuel vehicles sold for the first three months of this year. The said figure is 27 percent more than the number of alternative fuel vehicles sold for the first three months of 2006. Today, it is estimated that the number of these vehicles in active service reaches 11 million.
E85 capable vehicles posted the highest sales gain according to the "premier provider of automotive information and marketing solutions to the automotive world and its related industries". For the first quarter of last year, 159,882 units of flex-fuel vehicles were sold in the United States. For the first three months of this year, car manufacturers sold 266,859 units of E85 capable vehicles. That shows an increase of 40 percent.
Hybrid vehicles are still increasing in popularity among car buyers as sales for the first quarter jumped by 31 percent compared to the first quarter sales last year. Last year, 51,285 hybrid vehicles were sold for the first three months of the year. For the first quarter of this year, car manufacturers combined to sell 74,056 units of hybrid vehicles in the first quarter alone.
Another alternative fuel vehicle increasing in popularity are biodiesel engine-equipped vehicles. The popularity of diesel is increasing as car buyers become more aware that the new generation of diesel engines is cleaner than their predecessors. With the use of emissions filter and aftermarket parts like the Bosal exhaust system, emission of back soot is reduced significantly.
For the first three months this year, 108,100 units of clean diesel engines were sold by car manufacturers. This figure shows a slight decrease from 108,100 units for the first quarter last year to 93,012 units for the same period this year.
"Gas prices, consumer incentives, and the increasing number of AFA models available to consumers all play a role in the rising popularity of these vehicles," says Dave McCurdy, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. "However, while interest in AFAs continues to grow, we still need more gas stations to offer biofuels like ethanol and biodiesel," he added further.
The lack of refilling stations offering biofuels has led some to criticize the government and the auto industry. In a recent study, it was found out that 99 percent of flex-fuel vehicles on the streets today are using gasoline. This is because of the scarcity of refilling stations which offers E85. This trend beats the purpose of these E85 capable vehicles.
Currently, there are sixty models of alternative fuel vehicles offered by different car manufacturers. In the hybrid segment, Toyota leads all car manufacturers. Aside from hybrids, clean diesel, and E85 capable vehicles, other AFAs include electric cars like those produced by ZAP.
In conclusion, McCurdy has this to say: "Automakers believe that the best way to enhance energy security and reduce carbon dioxide emissions is through the use of alternative fuel autos. While consumers value fuel economy, they also want other attributes in today's vehicles. These are vehicles fueled by combustible and energy-producing materials other than oil or petroleum. Excessive burning of petroleum leads to increasing release of carbon-based compounds in the atmosphere, such as carbon monoxide, that administer global warming.
Car manufacturers are beginning to develop cars powered by hydrogen. Hydrogen cars are AFVs that either use hydrogen to fuel an internal combustion engine designed similarly with a petroleum-generated engine or stored in a fuel cell. This attempt is expected to reduce huge amount of harmful pollutants in the air because of its 10 to 95 percent smoke emission reduction.
Although electric vehicles are found more feasible at present, some top car manufacturing companies in fast developing cities like Indianapolis are looking into the market potential of hydrogen cars in the next twenty years. Some of them are manufacturing cars with built-in hydrogen-generated engines, but most consider replacing engines of used cars with hydrogen fuel cells to study its feasibility.
Used car dealers in Indianapolis have yet to see hydrogen cars a booming investment in the near future. Today, hydrogen cars have ostensible downsides, primarily because of the kind of gas required to harness in volumes. Hydrogen is not a natural gas on earth; it has to be extracted from other substances often requiring technology that harness traditional sources.
Another drawback of hydrogen as a fuel is its low energy content per unit volume, which means that to produce a large amount of energy, an unimaginable volume of hydrogen is needed. This makes some used car dealers in Indianapolis disregard the idea of selling hydrogen cars. Nonetheless, car design companies are attempting to figure out ways to compress hydrogen to reduce its volume while maintaining its amount.
Today, hydrogen cars are proven efficient both in reducing air pollutants and in running speed. The completely finished hydrogen-powered vehicle has set a land speed record of about 286 mph. Used car dealers in Indianapolis consider selling cars with redesigned engines that match this achievement, without reflecting cost change and physical adjustments on the rest of the cars parts.
Furthermore, the recent price hike in fuel prices and increasing awareness of eco-friendly automotives, have paved a wider way for alternative fuels like CNG and LPG.

Here is a basic understanding of the two alternative fuels that are widely being used in the Indian as well as the international car market. These fuels are gradually taking over petrol and diesel and are expected to rule the industry with their superior efficiency and environment friendly nature.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)

LPG, also known as propane, is the gas produced during distillation of crude oil and is also known as petrol gas with 100% octane. Octane number actually defines the fuel's resistance to knocking any car can run on high octane fuel without any kind of modification or problem.
These days many car manufacturers fit LPG kits in their car models to deliver a smoother, quicker, and cleaner running of their car models. The renowned Indian cars running successfully on LPG today are Hyundai Santro and Maruti Suzuki WagonR Duo (petrol and LPG).

Some of the benefits of using LPG as car fuel are:

* It gives a smoother and cleaner running.

* It is available at a much cheaper price and has lower service cost.

* LPG has the ability to extend the cruising range.

* Delivers enhanced power, acceleration, and cruise speed.

* High octane rating makes it easier to blend with air for combustion.

* It causes less damage to engine and engine components as compared to petrol.

The disadvantages of LPG are:

* It takes longer to start the engine during winter because of the low vapor pressure of propane.

* Low energy content lowers the driving range.

* A friendly LPG kit cannot be fitted in all car models.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)

CNG
is a fossil fuel that is made by compressing natural gas at standard atmospheric pressure to nearly about 1% of its actual volume. It is considered to be one of the most viable options against the traditional fuels like petrol and diesel.

Many cars in India today are attuned to this alternative fuel technology. Some of the most popular and successful car models are Hyundai Santro, Hyundai Accent, and Tata Indica.

Some of the key advantages of CNG are:

* CNG is almost one-third of the cost price of petrol.

* It is one of the cleanest fuels as carbon monoxide emissions is reduced by about 80-90% and the carbon dioxide by about 10%.

* The basic car engine need not be changed to convert gasoline engine to CNG.

* It is much safer as during any kind of leakage the gas escapes to the atmosphere.

Some of the drawbacks of CNG include:

* CNG kit occupies larger space in the boot.

* It reduces car performance to some extent.

Overy the years we've had casual conversation of the issures but without any real emphasis. Fortunately we have the raw resources to solve the issues we're dealing with. We now have mobilized a serious effort to find the solutions to alternatrive fuel.
The essentual depletion of current gasoline, oil and energy resources continues to dwindle at a fairly rapid rate. As a country with the many needs for fuel it's not hard to grasp the channeleging issue. Not only are the current resources impacted but the ongoing hand in hand pollution that comes with the high use of pollution creating materials has merely compounded the problem.
Our environment is the only one we've got and surely we all understand that care needs to be applied to the current pollution issues. Our population continues to grow, the use of modern conveniences growth so consequential we need to develope alternative energy resource to keep up with the demand yet at the same time reduce the hazardes that come with our massive uses.
With the rapid growth of industrailization since the early twenty's which has been phenominal we lost a certain calmness and stability. The so called good ole days were good as compared to the the ever on going demise of our environment which was to a larger measure controlled. Today, environmental issues are blazzing a very difficult and negative trail.
The horse and buggies are gone, airplanes, limo's and railroads are the norm so we need to better learn how the use our newer toys if we are to be comfortable with our liftstyle in the oncoming days ahead.
Finding solutions to the transportation element in our daily lives is very important. There's much confidence that with the attention level rather high that a better solution(s) with soon be found regarding alternative fuel.

Alternative fuel needs are here

An alternative fuel Source-Biogas Fuel by Orlando Racelis

You probably have heard this before:" Biogas as an alternative fuel Source". I have heard about it before but I did not pay much interest in it. Not until I return to Manila for my annual vacation. You see, I am an overseas Filipino worker based in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. I am really shock when I saw the price tags of petroleum fuel. It has gone up ten times 10 years ago.
The quest for an efficient alternative fuel is still going on however; there are bio fuels that are already available in the market commercially. Biogas fuel is one of them. So what is biogas? It is another form of renewable energy where its energy is extracted from organic waste materials. It is manufactured very much cheaper compared to the petroleum fossil fuels.
How is energy generated? It is a biological reaction caused by bacteria degradation. The organic materials is being attacked by bacteria in the absence of oxygen hence anaerobic digestion occurred and gas in the form of methane and carbon dioxide is produced. The digestion process occur when there is an absence of oxygen. The ideal Environments are marshes, rubbish dumps, septic tanks, and Arctic Tundra. There are improvised methods developed by producing complex machines to have a better result.
Adding water to the organic waste material is the conventional method used and it is also known as the "liquid process". The process used in "landfill sites are called "solid process".
So now that we know how the biogas is produced, how do we collect it and consume it as a fuel? Methane gas from experience is very hard to compress. For this reason, the best approach is to use it as stationary fuel. Meaning we do not transport it but use it directly from the site where the gas is produced.
This fuel is best used at home for cooking, heating, light and absorption refrigeration. It can also be used to run pumps that are powered by gas powered engines.
What are its benefits? These are the benefits:
* Save money from your energy bills
* It is easy to control.
* It is quicker to produce.
* There is no smoke or smell.
* It has no dark carbon residue on your pots.
* The sludge produced could be used as a fertilizer.
* It reduces pathogen transmission compared to untreated waste.
* It helps to reduce our dependence to petroleum fossil oil, thus causing a positive effect on our economy.
* It reduces the pollution of our environment.
* It provides additional source of jobs.
In conclusion, Biogas is one of the accepted renewable energy resources in the world today. With its valuable benefits and advantages over the petroleum fossils we should work together for its improvement. I personally believe that one day; we will live in a much cleaner, safer and healthier world.
To know more about BioFuel, please get your free report here:
Wood, a traditional fuel, is regaining popularity while more modern alternatives, such as wood and corn pellets and waste oil, are more routinely used.
Wood has been used since the beginning of time as a source of heat. The fuel was brought inside to heat shelters centuries ago; open fires in fireplaces were replaced in the eighteenth century by self-contained stoves, which are still in use today in a number of designs. Franklin stoves and pot-bellied stoves, popular for generations, have been augmented by efficient Scandinavian designs like Jotul stoves. In recent years wood furnaces, designed to burn longer than stoves without refeeding, have upped the efficiency of wood burning tremendously.
The type of wood burned varies in different regions based on availability, but some practices are standard: the wood burned is generally hardwood rather than softwood; wood is aged (cut and stacked) for at least a year before burning; and it is well known that the heating energy available for a particular wood (measured in BTUs, or British Thermal Units) is greater for more dense woods than for less dense woods, so the heavier the wood the more energy it will provide as it burns. The Iowa State University Forestry Extension Service lists a number of woods by weight, listing Osage Orange at 4792 pounds per cord of wood, and Basswood at 1984 pounds per cord. To find out what woods are available in your area and to estimate how many cords of wood you will need, contact your local Extension Service (sometimes listed under state or county government listings in your phone book).
Wood pellets are manufactured from recycled wood waste and are considered a very safe, clean-burning, and economical alternative to fuel oil and to traditional wood burning. Special stove designs have been created especially to burn wood pellets; inserts are also available to adapt existing fireplaces and furnaces for this fuel. The Pellet Fuels Institute offers a
list of manufacturers of pellet fuel in every region of the U.S., along with advice on how to buy and use wood pellets. Corn pellets are manufactured from dried corn and used the same way as wood pellets. Either or both can be found at a variety of outlets including nurseries, garden suppliers, and fireplace and stove dealerships. Shop around to compare prices and other information on wood and corn pellets.
Some homeowners are substituting Waste oil for number 2 fuel oil in specially designed furnaces; others are successfully converting their conventional furnaces for its use. Waste oil is actually used vegetable oil collected from restaurants and filtered before use. Biodiesel is a manufactured oil consisting of a mixture of fuel oil and oil manufactured from vegetable sources; B20 is 20 percent vegetable-based oil and 80 percent conventional diesel oil; B100 is all vegetable oil. B20 is more readily available and can be used in conventional oil furnaces without adaptation; B100 requires some adaptations (for instance, natural rubber in the furnace will need to be replaced with manmade substances, as the vegetable oil degrades rubber over time). One problem with using waste oil is that below certain temperatures it stops flowing; so the fuel needs to be kept warm; biodiesel contains an additive which keeps the oil liquid at low temperatures.
Any time fire is present in a home, as in a wood stove, fireplace, or furnace, the fire hazard has to be considered and prevented. Additionally, wood burning in particular builds up creosote, a sticky, flammable substance which coats stovepipes and chimneys and can cause chimney fires and even burn down a house. Wood and corn pellets and waste oil are considered relatively clean-burning, but still require attention and maintenance.
Choosing an alternative fuel can be not only safe and economical, but a good deal for the environment; many of these fuels are produced locally, cutting way down on transportation costs, and many of them burn more cleanly than fuel oil, having a more positive impact on the environment. Add to that the fact that relying on alternative fuels cuts down on reliance on foreign oil, and it becomes clear that opting for one of these fuels is a great idea.
Alternative fuel vehicles are those that do not use traditional fuel, such as petroleum, in order to operate. It is a known fact that petroleum, when fueled to an internal combustion engine can produce emissions consisted of harmful gases. Reducing, if not totally replacing, the use of petroleum in the energy conversion will strongly impact the levels of pollution in the air.
Electric cars are just among the alternative fuel vehicles that are already running on todays roads. The name itself signifies that it is fueled by electricity and not by petroleum. However, it does not fully reduce carbon compound emissions completely, because the battery it uses also produces carbon emissions. Nevertheless these cars can reduce the rate of carbon emissions by as much as 30%.
Electric cars have a high potential of reducing massive amount of air pollution within ten years of continuously replacing petroleum-generated cars. Some prominent car manufacturing industries, such as Mitsubishi, are beginning to design electric cars for future investments. Car developers in highly developed cities like Indianapolis estimate that a third of the 900 million petroleum-generated cars will be replaced with electric cars in 2020.
As an example, 40 million alternative fuel vehicles are already on the run. Most of these vehicles are electricity-generated and do not produce any smoke. Nevertheless, Mitsubishi Indianapolis electric cars still have some significant disadvantages, including expensive battery price and limited output endurance.
Despite that, EVs are found with low running costs and maintenance. Unlike an internal combustion engine that has hundreds of parts, an EVs engine only has 5 major parts which requires maintenance. Mitsubishi Indianapolis car designers have been working on lowering the maintenance requirement for EVs by perfecting the integrating these five parts.
Another good feature of an EV is its high energy efficiency. Compared to an internal combustion engine which normally wastes a large percentage of energy by converting it to heat, the electrical energy produced by the battery of an EV is purely converted, with less waste, to mechanical energy. Mitsubishi Indianapolis car designers just need to develop battery switch technology on EVs for extended driving power.
What was more shocking was that at one point, diesel prices become more expensive than gasoline.What happened next was completely unexpected. After a couple of months, fuel prices began to drop steeply. Speculator say that prices will reach as high as $200 per barrel but now, it is at $40 to $60 per barrel.
Still, the government took action by releasing funding on exploration of alternative forms of energy and gave incentives on those who produce crops that will be converted into fuel. While the government had been active in its campaign to become energy independent since time immemorial, it was just recently when crude prices were up, that the government had seriously taken it as a priority.
But is biodiesel the answer to unstable diesel fuel prices?
Originally, the diesel engine was designed to run on vegetable oil. But since petroleum diesel was cheaper then, vegetable oil was simply not an economical choice. But now, pump prices have driven farmers to convert their lands into biodiesel plantations. On one hand, the production of alternative fuel like biodiesel is good since its use will reduce our demand for petroleum oil. And if the demand is low, the prices will follow as well.
Since biodiesel comes from vegetable oil, it is 100% biodegradable. It does not hurt the environment. Furthermore, a wide spread use of biodiesel in the future will help solve air pollution in big cities because biodiesel help reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emissions. The decrease on petroleum consumption has a good environmental effect.
On the other hand, experts say that while converting farmlands into biodiesel will ease the demand on petroleum products, it will drive the food prices up and may create food shortage. This is because lands that are supposed to be used in producing food are now producing fuel. Many farmers are now focused on fuel production and not on food production. Early signs of food shortage were felt right after farmers began planting more corn. It should be remembered that just recently, corn prices began to rise because of the increasing demand for biodiesel. Prices of other farm-produced fruits and vegetables rose as well.
There are other ways to get biodiesel. Recycled restaurant grease, vegetable oil and animal fats can be used to drive your diesel engine vehicle. Other alternative forms of energy that are both efficient and do not harm the environment include solar energy, electric and even water.
Gas prices are rising and you are feeling the pinch everytime you top up diesel fuel at the station. The best way to get out of the increasing fuel price is to look into alternative fuel.

The combination of oil prices skyrocketing over $115 a barrel and coal costs doubling has been essential in awakening a new sense of urgency about alternative fuel.
With US drivers paying close to $4.05 per gallon of gas and California drivers paying approximately $4.20 per gallon, support is increasing for a national commitment to accelerate use of alternative fuels. Whether these be hydro, nuclear, or hybrid technologies, US consumers are finally realizing that our country's energy independence and economy are 100% linked to reducing our dependence on traditional fuels.
It would appear as if the political climate has never been better for the alternative fuels movement. To truly seize this opportunity, the organizations that comprise the movement would be well served to consider the import of technology in enhancing the cross community communication needed to secure lasting successes.
Indeed, many alternative energy lobbying groups could experience benefits from using new technologies that facilitate networking. Examples include Rondee.com's <*a href="http://www.rondee.com">free conference call<*/a> solution which enables scalable teleconferencing as well as online conference calling and networking tools.
Tip #1: Use online tools to network
The most successful alternative fuels advocacy groups create networks of supporters who believe in their values and mission. While the term networking frequently gets an undesirable reputation, the simple reality is that these networks can provide significant aid. Today in San Jose, the expectation is that professional people will have at least a rudimentary LinkedIn profile.
At the same time, other networking applications such as Facebook are starting to see adoption by more professional users. These services also offer a relatively easy method of developing your network.
Second Tip: Use a free conference calling offering
In the last handful of years, there has been escalating levels of cross-functional integration between geographically separate alternative fuels advocacy groups. One underlying reason for this trend has been reduced air travel costs - a trend that may now be going the opposite direction with the leaping oil costs mentioned earlier.
Another factor is the accessibility of the sorts of <*a href="http://www.rondee.com">free conference calling services<*/a> highlighted above. Most of these offerings, including those offered by Rondee work on the same central principle. They provide groups a personal access number and a toll number to call. If all teleconference users dial the same number and enter the same PIN code, they are put into the conference phone call.
Tip #3: Investigate technology to enable desktop sharing
Some alternative fuels advocacy groups have distributed leadership groups, and it is impractical to have face-to-face meetings. Technology is solving this problem by way of desktop sharing. Whether it's displaying a PowerPoint presentation displaying the group's fundraising initiatives or a spreadsheet showing the performance desktop sharing can be extremely useful for not a few alternative energy groups.
Fourth Tip: Deploy an electronic newsletter system
It was not too long ago that sending out an email newsletter was time consuming and tiresome. That has now changed. On-line services are making it possible to create templated and scalable newsletters. These solutions reduce the work load by at approximately 90% and in so doing allow alternative fuel groups to concentrate on content development rather than delivery of messages.
Tip #5: Leverage data driven decision-making practices
One of the most significant trends in the last several years affecting nonprofit organizations in the alternative energy community has been the increasing reliance on evidence based decision-making. Practitioners can apply the same practices with simple to use Excel or Lotus spread-sheeting applications to ascertain what works and what does not work. Increasingly, the hurdle for quality decision-making is rising and thus reliance on conjecture is being systematically replaced by empirical data to support decisions.
----------

However, fossil fuels are still being widely utilized when compared to alternative sources. There are various differences between these two types of power.
Geothermal energy is power that is obtained by exploiting dry steam or hot water found underneath the surface of the earth. There are 3 types of plants. There are dry steam plants in which pipes are used to bring the steam directly to the plant. There are also flash steam plants and with this type pipes are used to bring hot water to the plants and then steam is created inside the plant.
In a binary cycle plant steam is generated by mixing hot water with some chemicals. This alternative power source has a number of pros and cons. When it comes to the pros, the main one is that it does not pollute the environment. It is a clean source mainly because it does not require fossil fuels to generate it.
It is not only the power source that is clean, the plants are also clean. Because there is a continuous production of heat under the surface geothermal power cannot be exhausted. In terms of cost you will benefit and this is usually after you have taken care of the initial costs. Although it is a clean source it is difficult to find a place where you can harness this type of energy and that is one of the major cons of this alternative source.
Although you will benefit in terms of costs in the long run, initially you will have to use up a lot of money. To add on to that there are methane deposits below the surface which can be disturbed in the process of tapping steam. This methane can be released and therefore pollute the environment. The other source is fossil fuel power. The fuels are made from decomposed animal and plant matter and this decomposition process takes millions of years.
These fuels are our primary source of power. They are very important as we rely on them for so many things for instance all vehicles require the power that is obtained from these fuels in order to function. One of the main disadvantages of this power source is that it cannot be renewed like alternative sources of power such as geothermal power.
The fuels are responsible for polluting the environment because a lot of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. Coal, oil as well as natural gases are the main types of fuels. Both these sources have their advantages and disadvantages and they are different in so many ways. The major difference is with regards to the impact they both have on our environment. Geothermal power is a clean source whilst fossil fuel power is harmful to the environment.

It's time to enhance your energy overall performance and lower your costs by using the incredible green energy resource of geothermal! Geo-Hydro Supply is the leading geothermal supply company. Alternative fuels are a great way to keep your car running while preserving the natural resources of the environment, and many of these resources are cost-effective as well.
There are a number of oils that can be used as alternative fuels, such as fossil fuels, which includes petroleum and coal. These materials are becoming more and more scarce due to overproduction in factories and the burning of toxic wastes, so it is important to recycle and 'live green' so that these resources can be protected. Propane and natural gas are also among the alternative fuels that can be used to power cars, and while these sources may be a little more experience in some places, there are some cars that run just fine using these sources; models from Honda and many European cars have already switched over to being run entirely from alternative fuels, and these vehicles are becoming more and more popular.
Non-fossil methane and vegetable oil are also among the alternative fuels that you may want to investigate for your car. You can talk to the dealership that you purchased the car from, as well as search online to figure out whether your car's model with run properly using these alternative forms of gas, and you may find that the internal parts of your car are more protected with these less abrasive forms of fuel as well.
In addition to the rapid loss of natural resources all over the world, there are a number of reasons why alternative fuels are in higher demand than ever before. Almost two million cars that use alternative fuel were sold in the U.S. in 2007, which means that more and more people are starting to learn more about this trend. The environmental concerns surrounding this fuel also has a lot to do with global warming, since the temperature of the earth has increased dramatically since the 20th century. Burning the fossil fuel that is usually used for gas has caused an increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations, which is why learning more about alternative fuels is so important.
You may also want to learn more about renewable energy if you're thinking about using natural substances to power your car. Renewable energy includes methods like solar power, wind power and hydropower, and manufacturers are currently working to distribute more automobiles that use renewable energy. There are several machines that are run by the power of the wind or water, and if you are interested in learning more about this process, you can visit sites like http://www.starttogogreen.com to learn more about how you can start incorporating alternative fuels in your daily life.
The price of oil is reaching an all time high and motorists are paying the price. The increase in gas prices comes at a time of great economic uncertainty. Consumer confidence is weakening as a looming US recession is bolstered by inflation. There has never been a more financially viable time to use alternative fuels for cars.
However, financial prudence is not the only driving force behind the search for alternative fuels for cars. There are various environmental incentives to finding alternative fuels for cars. Scientists and environmentalists are looking for a renewable source of energy that can by consumed as cleanly as possible. Producing this resource also needs to be environmentally friendly with as little social impact as possible.
Several sources of alternative energy are actually bad for the environment as well as for the people involved. These resources may require land to be cleared in order to plant and develop these renewable resources. Clearing the land can be bad for the environment and human inhabitants may also be forced out of their homes.
The large and varied considerations in the selection of an alternative fuel have split researchers. The scientific and environmental community is still unable to reach a unanimous decision on which alternative fuel solution is the best.
This casts a large shadow of doubt over alternative energy vehicles. Hydrogen and electric cars could become obsolete if another form of alternative energy is widely adopted. This is a tangible possibility as more research and data is collected.
In the meantime, a cost effective, environmentally friendly solution is already available; water. Water can be used as a catalyst in hydrogen generators. By using water as a catalyst, gas can burn more effectively, thus giving your vehicle better mileage. Also, clean water is a resource that is easier to obtain compared to hydrogen, thus making it more convenient. Filling a tank with water is also faster than charging an electric cell.
However, it is imperative to note that hydrogen generators do not allow you to operate your vehicle entirely on water. Hydrogen generators turn water into their gaseous state and inject the gas into the vehicle's engine. This displaces some gas while allowing the remaining gas to burn more efficiently.
The topic of hydrogen generators is one of the most widely discussed topics when it comes to car modifications that improve gas mileage. There are several companies that will install a hydrogen generator into your vehicle. Unfortunately, these services can be quite costly. These installation services can cost up to $10,000.
Alternatively, there are DIY options available on the internet. There are several guides available on the internet that will show you how to perform a HHO conversion. Some of these guides claim that the raw materials required to perform the conversions can cost as little as $150.
There is a great deal of uncertainty in the alternative fuel sector. But what is certain is that a cheap, environmentally-friendly solution should be employed by motorists wherever possible. Until the scientific and environmental community can reach a consensus, water may be one of the best alternative fuels for cars.
In fact, part of the fast-rising vehicles today is powered by alternative fuels. In a short span of time, these vehicles have swiftly stolen the limelight of the industry.
Alternative fuel, also known as non-conventional fuels, is any material or substance that can be used as a fuel, other than fossil fuels, or conventional fuels of petroleum, coal, propane, and natural gas. The term usually refers to a source of which energy is renewable. Its main function is to store energy in a form that is stable and can be easily transported from the place of production to the end user. Alternative fuels include biodiesel, butanol, ethanol, chemically stored electricity like batteries and fuel cells, hydrogen, methane, natural gas, biomass, wood, wood gas, vegetable oil, and peanut oil.
One of the vehicles using such alternative fuels is the Volvo Multi-Fuel. Said vehicle is optimized to run on five different fuels so there is a need to upgrade on Volvo performance parts. The Volvo Multi-Fuel, based on the Volvo V70, is powered by a 2.0-liter five-cylinder turbocharged engine that will run on hythane (10 per cent hydrogen and 90 per cent methane), biomethane, natural gas (CNG), bioethanol E85 (85 per cent bioethanol and 15 per cent gasoline) and gasoline.
Aside from the fact that it runs on 5 different engines, another notable facet of the Volvo Multi-Fuel is its relatively consistent performance not considering the fuel used. Volvo claims that the turbocharged engine of the vehicle is producing about 200 horsepower. It is sufficient to power up the wagon. The vehicle runs exceptionally clean. In fact, when pure renewable fuels such as hyrdrogen, biomethane or bioethanol are used, very little fossil carbon dioxide is emitted.
Hythane, E85 bioethanol and CNG biomethane are extra-clean fuels. This is main reason why the vehicle has surpassed all existing emissions regulations imposed in any market at the present time. Furthermore, it would also qualify for the upcoming EuroV emissions regulations. The mentioned fuels also have the advantage of being carbon neutral. It means that the amount of carbon emitted when the fuel is burned is equivalent to the amount acquired by the crops used to make the fuel.
When changing between fuels, the driver only has to choose between gaseous or liquid fuel and the engine management system will adjust to optimize performance for the fuel. The Multi-Fuel has separate fuel tanks for gaseous fuels that include hythane, biomethane and CNG; and liquid fuel like E85 and gasoline.
"The whole car is optimized for high performance, driving on any of the five different fuels," said Mats Moren, project leader engine at Volvo Car Corporation. "It is a step towards a hydrogen-powered society. Perhaps we can develop the system even further, to run on a higher blend in the future."
Volvo is known for its commitment to lead automotive milestones. As a fact, it has been associated with remarkable safety and ninety-degree bodywork. At this point in time, the automaker has already established a name that embodies style, quality, cutting-edge design - and superb green technology.
Aside from Volvo, renowned automakers like Daimler Chrysler are producing entry vehicles that use alternative fuels. The latest entry so far is the E320 CDI BlUETEC that runs on a biomass-to-liquid (BtL) fuel known as SunDiesel. Said fuel can be used as the lone fuel or as an additive. "We believe BtL fuels can make an important contribution to our energy supply," explained Prof. Dr. Herbert Kohler, vice president of the Research Body and Powertrain and also chief environmental officer of DaimlerChrysler AG. "They can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, and with their good carbon dioxide audit they can also help make mobility more environmentally compatible."
The Mercedes-Benz E200 NGT and the smart four two cng were also entered, both running on CNG. The E 200 NGT reduces CO2 emissions by over 20 per cent and with a power output of 163 horsepower from the 1.8-liter engine. It is the most powerful CNG passenger car currently in production. The driver can decide whether to use CNG or gasoline using buttons on the steering wheel, and an electronic control unit ensures a smooth transition from one power source to the other. Fuel consumption is 39 mpg with CNG and 26 mpg with premium unleaded.
Ford's green vehicles include Focus C-MAX H2 ICE is powered by a prototype hydrogen internal combustion engine. The engine is a 2.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 110 horsepower. According to Ford the Focus C-MAX H2 ICE has a driving range of about 120 miles with the fuel capacity of 2.75 kg of hydrogen.
General Motors newest entry is Saab 9-5 BioPower, which runs on either bioethanol or gasoline. The BioPower is not only environment-friendly; it also but delivers more power and performance than the gasoline-only version. The vehicle can switch between bioethanol and gasoline without any adjustment by the driver.
The Q7 TDI, powered by 3.0-liter direct-injection with impressive fuel economy of 22 mpg, is Audi's latest green SUV pride. For the recently held Challenge Bibendum, the Q7 TDI was fueled with Synfuel produced by Shell. It is manufactured from natural gas, biomass or coal to decrease the environmental impact by reducing exhaust emissions.
They are simply fuels that replace conventional gasoline as a means of powering vehicles. Alternative fuels have desirable energy efficiency and pollution reduction features. The 1990 Clean Air Act encourages development and sale of alternative fuels. Basically, alternative fuels include methane, propane, ethanol, and compressed gas among others. The use of alterative fuels informed people that they should switch to alternative fuel vehicles now.
There are two types of <a href=" http://alternativefuelstips.com/blog/">alternative fuel cars - those that are originally designed to run on these new fuels and those that have been converted to run on alternative fuels. Car companies will also make hybrid vehicles that can run on either gasoline or other fuels. Many people call these cars "green vehicles" because of their positive effect on the environment.
Since the trend is toward producing and buying environmentally friendly vehicles, nearly every major car manufacturer has at least one green vehicle in their inventory. We're relatively sure that as alternative fuels become more and more popular because of the cost and the positive effects on our environment, the number of green vehicles will dramatically increase in the next few years.
As of 2006, here is a list of some of the green vehicles manufactured by some of the major car companies:
* Honda Insight
* Honda Accord Hybrid
* Dodge Ram Pickup 1500 Series
* Dodge Stratus Sedan
* Dodge Durango SUV
* Dodge Caravan Minivan
* Ford Taurus
* Ford F-150 Pickup
* Ford Escape SUV
* GM Impala
* Chevrolet Silverado 4 x 2
* Chevrolet Tahoe SUV
* Chevy Yukon SUV
* Nissan Titan Pickup
* Toyota Highlander SUV
* Toyota Prius
Many of the vehicles listed above are hybrid vehicles which mean that they can run on both conventional gasoline as well as alternative fuels. As we said, the above list is for 2006 vehicles. The list for 2007 is much larger.
There are also two other types of alternative fuel cars that are becoming more and more popular. First, there is the electric vehicle. This car is exactly what it says it is. You plug it into an electrical outlet to charge the battery and then drive without using any fuel at all. However, these vehicles are generally not meant to travel at high speeds.
A second type of AFV is the fuel cell vehicle. These cars get electrical energy from a fuel cell instead of from a battery. There are different kinds of fuel cell vehicles, but most manufacturers prefer cells that use a proton exchange membrane that uses hydrogen to produce an electrical current to run the motor. The only type of exhaust with this type of vehicle is water - believe it or not!
Besides the obvious advantages to owning an AFV, the government is also stepping in to make it even more advantageous. People who buy these types of vehicles are given tax breaks on their income taxes. Additionally, many states also offer incentives and car manufacturers even offer rebates or discounts.
It's kind of exciting to think about the fact that we can now power our vehicles using things like vegetable oil, animal fats, and even wood! It brings to mind the movie "Back to the Future" where Doc would power his DeLorean time machine using garbage as fuel!

Avoid the raging control over oil prices while you save our mother earth. Use <a href=" http://alternativefuelstips.com/blog/"> alternative fuels now. Be informed. Get a free guide about how you can use alternative fuels as its best now.

Exploring The New Demand For Alternative Fuels by Al Haneson

Remember when gas prices rose past $3 a gallon in many cities across the United States? Drivers clamored for alternative fuels so that the country wouldn't be so reliant on foreign sources of oil. As gas prices have gone back down, the shouts for alternative fuels have quieted.
But that hardly means that the United States doesn't need to invest its resources into developing green gas alternatives that can not only power our cars and trucks, but the machinery in our factories, too.
Fortunately, there are plenty of researchers and scientists today developing alternative fuels. There's hope that that one day the United States will no longer have to rely on unstable outside governments to provide as much of the gasoline that the country needs.
What are exactly talking about here then? Basically, sustainable, burnable, combustible substances are any materials that can be used as gas that aren't derived or pulled from conventional sources. Conventional fuel sources include fossil fuels, such as oil, coal and propane.
Today's extracurricular fuel sources include such unconventional forms of power as vegetable oil, hydrogen, bio-diesel and chemically stored electricity in batteries and fuel cells.
The problem so far is that no one has yet developed a way to provide these green or friendly energy means cheaply and efficiently on a widespread basis. It can also be a challenge to convince consumers used to gas stations to give other forms of alternative fuels a chance.
For instance, there is enough technology to create entire fleets of electric cars. However, there are still many hurdles to overcome. Will the nation have to erect scores of recharging stations across the country? Or can we simply reconfigure existing gas stations? Can we sell electric cars cheaply enough so that everyone can afford them? How can we develop electric cars that run for hundreds of miles without needing to be recharged?
A difficult national economy is also hampering efforts to develop and introduce environmentally conscious energy sources. It's difficult for government officials to justify spending big money on risky alternative fuel programs that may not generate positive results for decades, if at all.
Still, even with the challenges, there is great hope today that the country is taking positive steps toward developing feasible alternative fuels. There are some who believe that the United States of the future won't rely on one main alternative supply or source but on a type of smorgasbord or menu of supply chained options.
Whatever happens, though, the need for a big change or shift in thinking and power cannot be overstated. By relying solely on oil, the United States puts itself at the mercy of outside governments. By developing outside fuel sources, the country can take control of its own energy future.
Alternative fuels for cars are the wave of the future as scientists look for cleaner burning fuels that wont damage the environment while providing great advantages to the vehicle owner. They have come up with several types of alternative fuels for cars so that a lot of different options are covered in the race to find the most economical types of alternative fuels to produce.

Probably the most well known type of alternative fuel is ethanol. Ethanol is often called grain alcohol as it is made from corn and/or soybeans. Today, on the market is E85 which is 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. Even though it still has gasoline in it, ethanol burns much cleaner than regular gas and saves on gas mileage for those who use it. Ethanol can also be made from organic materials including agricultural crops and waste, plant material left from logging, and trash including paper!

Propane, or compressed natural gas has long been used to provide energy to homes, but it is rising in popularity as a type of alternative fuel for vehicles. Like oil, this common fuel comes from underground. However, natural gas, as the name implies, is a gas much like air, rather than a liquid like petroleum. It has been found to be one of the most environmentally friendly fuels, and its popularity is growing.

One of the most interesting and promising type of alternative fuels for cars is hydrogen. While mostly only experimental vehicles are operating on this fuel now, the potential for this unique energy source is excellent. Hydrogen is the lightest of all elements and is easy to produce which is why it is sending excitement waves throughout the alternative fuel industry as they next big type of alternative fuel that can be used in vehicles.

These are only a few types of alternative fuels for cars and general use application, and more are being developed all the time. With a growing concern over global warming, the use of alternative fuels will grow in popularity over time and you will likely begin to see many other types of alternative fuels make their appearance.

For a full report on the different types of alternative fuels visit Alternative Fuel Choice.
You see, according to dealers and retailers as well as manufacturers of vehicles in the auto market, more and more American customers are purchasing cars and vehicles that run on alternative fuel. The list of alternative fuel vehicles include those hybrid vehicles as well as those that could run on diesel and ethanol.
According to Fred Webber, the current president and chief executive of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, "Our priority is to get the word out that alternative fuel autos are on sale now, and these vehicles are the quickest way to reduce gasoline use. No one wants to see high gas prices and concerns about energy security, but the good news about today's energy situation is that more Americans are purchasing one of the many fuel efficient automobiles on sale today." The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is actually an organization that represents nine of the automakers which sell their products around the globe as well as in the United States.
Sure enough, more and more people are opting to own one unit of these alternative fuel vehicles. One thing is that they would be getting much on savings. Fuel prices may have gone down but the alternative sources of energy for a vehicle to run do cost much, much less. Plus, maintaining them is not that difficult for many replacements parts for these alternative vehicles are readily available in the market along with other partslike Pontiac performance parts. The auto world is now opening up their arms to these alternative fuel vehicles so much so that keeping them in good condition now becomes an easy and economical task.
Webber even further adds, "Every model of auto is available today with some kind of fuel efficient technology, such as variable valve timing, continuously variable transmissions, and cylinder deactivation. We urge all consumers to check out these fuel efficient options on dealers' lots today." The list of fuel efficient vehicles in the market includes hybrids like the Honda Insight, the Toyota Prius, the Ford Escape Hybrid, and the Toyota Sienna Hybrid.
