Text To Speech Conversion & Custom Voices

Hello guys, how you doing? I am posting on the blog after a very long time. Sorry for that. So, today I am going to explain you two things. One is Converting Text to Speech & installing custom voices for Microsoft TTS Engine.

NOTE: This tutorial will work only on Windows Vista & all the Windows released after it.

Windows Text To Speech

It is a built-in TTS engine in Windows family from Windows 98. It synthesizes text into voice. Every version of Windows comes with different Engines. Each engine has improved the Speech quality. Here’s a list of default speech engines that come with each Windows:-

1. Windows XP – Microsoft Sam

2. Windows 7 – Microsoft Anna

3. Windows 8 – Microsoft Mike

4. Windows 10 – Microsoft David & Microsoft Zira

After the introduction of the Microsoft Speech API 5.0, the voices became more natural sounding. Unfortunately, Windows 7 comes with Microsoft Anna Built-In which sounds very Robotic.

1. Converting Text to Speech

So, to convert Text to Speech, we’re going to be scripting one Batch File that will accept some text & speak it aloud. If you are not familiar with Batch Programming, go and see my Batch Programming Tutorial Series. We’re also going to need to download one Software. It is known as NirCMD. To download it, click here(32-bit) OR click here(64-bit).

So, after downloading it, you should get one file named ‘NirCMD.exe’, we only need this file. Follow the below steps to create your own Text to Speech converting Batch program.

Steps:-

1. Create a new folder (for ex. TTS) at a convenient location.

2. Copy the ‘NirCMD.exe’ there.

3. Open Notepad, and type the following code into it

4. Save the file with any name (TTS.bat). Just make sure it has ‘.bat’ at the end to make it a bath file. Save it in the same folder in which you copied the ‘NirCMD.exe’ file.

Now, you’ve the Batch File ready. You can make many modifications like changing colors, etc. to make it more user-friendly. Now, open the Batch File, & type the text you want, and the computer will speak it aloud.

Now, the problem is, if you’re on Windows 7, Microsoft Anna (the default voice) sounds very Robotic. This brings us to the Second part of the Post, that is to Add custom voices to Windows 7.

2. Adding Custom Voices to Win 7

To add new voices, we will need to download some packages from Microsoft. One is the Microsoft Speech API 5.0 voices & the voice itself. There are many voices available for SAPI 5, but the are not free. Microsoft has 6 free voices(all female). I will leave the links for all the stuff. Now, just installing these packages don’t work(I don’t know Why?). We have to make some changes to the registry, which is sometimes complex & if any error occurs, it could fatally damage the system.

So, I’ve picked one voice that is ZiraPro. It is the most natural sounding voice, & I’ll provide the registry files that will automatically install. But, if you want to learn how to do it for other voices, then comment down. With sufficient comments, I’ll tell you how to do it.

Follow the steps below correctly to make the voice Work

1. Download & install the Windows SAPI 5 voices.

2. Then download & install the desired voice(ZiraPro Preferred).

2.1 Go Here & Click on Download. On the list that appears, look for 'MSSpeech_TTS_en- US_ZiraPro.msi'. Then click download & install it.

3. Then download the following registry entries.

4. It’s a Zip. It contains two files. Extract them. Open the first file & click Yes on the Dialog Box that appears. Do the same for the 2^nd file.

5. Now, if you’re running 32-bit Windows, simply search for TTS in he start menu. Then, click on ‘Change Text To Speech Settings’.

6. If you’re running 64-bit windows, then you should run the following command ‘%windir%\SysWOW64\Speech\SpeechUX\sapi.cpl’ without quotes in the Run Dialog Box.

7. Then, select ‘Microsoft Server Speech Text to Speech Voice (en-US, ZiraPro)’ from the list.

8. Click on OK. You’re Done.

1. Decimal TO Binary Converter :-

Yes, this programs converts Decimal Numbers to Binary Form.

I won’t be explaining the lines I already explained in previous posts.

In this program, we first get an input from the user & convert that number into Binary. We use ‘%’ symbol to show mod operation. We’ve used mod and division in a loop to convert the number. We’ve set the condition that when the input number becomes 1 then we come out of the loop. Then we display the eoutput in ‘f’ variable.

2. Reminder

This program sets a reminder for a specified time. Actually this program is not perfected as Reminder should an a voice message. We’ll introduce how to add Voice to your Batch Scripts in upcoming parts.

Here, we’ve used the echo command with ‘>>’ and a directory with using the variable appdata. We can create another text file with the use of this. Here,first take all information from the user assign it to variable place them appropriately in desired places then we create another file namd ‘Rm.bat’. Then we use the schtasks command to trigger the file we just created at specified time. That’s it!!

I won’t be explaining the lines I already explained in previous posts.

This program first Aborts any shutdown if any is predefined. For this we use the shutdown.exe with parameter /a. Here another variable named ‘errorlevel’ is introduced. If a command is performed and if any error occurs then the error code is stored in this variable. We use this to check for any predefined shutdowns, if there are any it will terminate them and exit. Other wise, it jumps to the next section. As warned, the timer doesn’t work for Log Off and Hibernate. As you can see, we’ve used & in some lines. It is used for starting a new line.

We know there exists a GUI application, but it would be more cool to get a CLI.

Create Fucntion

Here, we’ve used the three commands for three different functions. They are tasklist to show task List,start to start an application,taskkill to End a Task. It may look lengthy but it is very simple to understand. The command taskkill is used with varius parameters. For ex. You can modify the code and end a task by using it Process ID. For that open Command Prompt and type, taskkill /?.

I'm back again with the 2^nd part of Cool Batch Tricks. In this series, I present some cool Batch Files & try to explain how they work. If you still haven’t seen the first part of the series, Click Here.You should watch the first part as it will help you to understand the code.

So, Let’s start.

Today, we will again learn two cool but very easy and programs. They are :-

1. Folder Bomber

This program creates folders with random names. You can set a limit or create unlimited folders (Can be used as a Virus, but IF SOMETHING WRONG HAPPENS DON’T BLAME ME)

I won’t be explaining the lines I already explained in previous posts.

The 2^nd line ‘Title Folder Bomber’ sets the Title to Folder Bomber in the Title Bar. The command’echo.’ Is used to print a blank line.

The if condition checks that if value of a is equal to 1, if true, then it directs the interpreter to the ‘Limited’ Section. The same is for next if condition.

The ‘cls’ command is used to clear the screen. The ‘md’ command means Make directory. It creates a new directory named ‘bomb’ & also creates a sub-directory of the value of random.

In limited Section we set the value of variable ‘i’ to 0. Then we create a loop with a condition inside it. If the condition is matched then the interpreter jumps out of the loop, else it repeats the commands in the loop.

We’ve used nul in front of pause with ‘>’, so pause won’t display any text when executed.

2. Calculator

As the name suggests, this program is used to calculate the values of expressions entered.

Here, we’ve used the set command with another parameter i.e ‘/a’. With this parameter, we can calculate the the value of an expression. We get the expression through the variable ‘e’ and set the output value of this expression to’x’. Then we print the variable ‘x’. Then we ask the user to repeat the process or not. Thus, it is so simple

I'm starting a new series of posts in which I will show you some cool useful batch programs that you can use on your Windows PC. I will provide the code and will try to explain how it works. This is the first part of this series. Each part will contain two programs.

So, Let’s start.

1. What is a Batch Script??

A Batch Script is a set of lines written in Batch Language. This language is used to execute commands in the Windows Command Prompt. This files have an extension of ‘.bat’. These can be executed without any need of compiler directly through Command Prompt. To know more about Command Prompt, go see my earlier post about Command Prompt.

Today, we will learn two cool but very easy and basi programs. They are :-

1. The Matrix

This program displays a cool Matrix of random numbers repeating continuously with a message displayed between them.

The first line ‘@echo off’ sets the echo to off. Echo means to display the current working path before each command. If its on then all paths are displayed,if it is off only outputs of commands that are performed are displayed.

In the next line ‘color a’, the color command is used to change the colour of the foreground and the background & ‘a’ sets the colour to green. To know more colours, open Command Prompt and type ‘color /?’(Without quotes).

The next line ‘:Start’, states that a new section is being started named Start. We will use a command to come back here. This will form a loop.

In the next line is ‘echo %random%.... %random%’, the echo command is used to display messages, %variable% is used to print the value of a variable. ‘Random’ generates random numbers.

The last line ‘goto start’, sends the interpreter to Start section that we declared earlier to form a loop.

2. SMS

This program used to send messages to other users that are on the same computer or to the clients of a server.

I’ve already explained about the 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd & 5^th lines. So, I won’t be explaining them again.

Moving on 4^th & 6^th line(they are almost similar), in this line we use the command ‘set’, which is used to assign values to a variable. ‘/p’ is an argument which prompts the user for input.

‘a’ is the variable name, and ‘MSG’ is the text to be displayed. Its Syntax is:

Set [arguements] <variable_name>=<Text>

In the 7^th line, we use ‘msg’ funcyion to send messages. We use the variables a,b in its arguments position. The Syntax of msg command is:

Msg [username] [message]

It is the basic syntax, there are more advanced options available, to check them, open Command Prompt & type ‘msg /?’ (without quotes).

The last second line contains only ‘pause’ word. This temperorily stops the execution and waits for the user to press any key.

The exit command is used to exit from the program.

The Windows Command Prompt

What is Windows Command Prompt??

It is a built-in CLI (Command Line Interface) that is available in Mirosoft Windows. A CLI is a software or an interpreter that accepts commands in the form of code of single line.

Earlier before Windows was created, Microsoft had an CLI OS named MS-DOS (MS for Microsoft and DOS for Disk Operating System). When windows was released MS-DOS was integrated in it as Command Prompt. The actions that coud be performed on DOS can also be performed on Command Ptompt.

Windows has its own GUI (Graphical User Interface) through which it can be easily controlled. But with Command Prompt, we can get advanced control over the Windows & CLI requires less resources to process which increases execution speed.

The syntax of the commands of Command Prompt are very easy. It is way much easier than C, C++, etc. One more advantage is we can predefine the code that is to be executed in an executable file.

It is known as Batch Programming. It supports conditional programming and many more. I will try to teach this language with help of some cool examples in my next post.

Windows Command Prompt

Advantages of Command Prompt :-

1. Very Simple Syntax.

2. Allows scripting

3. Its look can be customized(Backgroung Colour, Foreground Colour, Font, Font Size, etc.)

Disadvantages of Command Prompt:-

1. As compared to Linux’s Terminal (Another CLI), it is less powerful as Terminal offers more control over the system.

2. At some times, Command Prompt crashes without giving information about the error.

Steps to run Command Prompt:-

1. Open the Start Menu OR press the Windows Key.

2. In the search box, type ‘cmd’

3. Hit Enter

Alternate Method:-

1. Press Windows Key + R. This will trigger the Run Dialog Box

2. Type ‘cmd’ in it.

3. Hit Enter

Get Google Assistant On Android Lollipop 5.0(No Root)

Hello Friends,

I know many of the users have Android Lollipop 5.0 and are waiting for the 6.0 Marshmallow to be officially released from the Manufacturers. As Android 6.0 Marshmallow has a bunch of new features. But the most cool and interesting feature is the Google Assistant.

Its obviously better than Google Now and is very much useful. If you don't know what you can do with Google Assistant, here is a Video that will tell you the 10 most Cool things that you can do with Google Assistant.

But today, I will tell you how to Enable Google Assitant on Android Lollipop 5.0.
The most amazing thing is it can be done without Rooting your Android Device. I've tested this method on My Device using Nova Launcher and it is working fineHere is a Step By Step method to do so:-

1. Go to The Play Store And in My Apps Panel, Tap on Goggle App go downwards and you will see a Beta Testing program. Join It. Wait a while and you can get the BETA version of the Google App. Click on Update.
2. After the update is complete, open Google App and set default Language to English US.
3. Now you have an option to Install Activity Launcher or Nova Launcher. You can find them on Play Store or click on the Names. The Further Guide is divided according to the Launcher you prefer.

4. If you use Activity Launcher :-
I. Open Activity Launcher
II. Tap on the “Recent activities” tab up top and select “All activities.” Wait for all activities to load.
III. Scroll down until you find the Google App. Tap on it to expand all available activities under the Google App.
IV. Find com.google.android.apps.gsa.staticplugins.opa.hq.OpaHqActivity. You can either tap on it once or create a shortcut to it on your launcher.
V. You’ll now find yourself within the new Assistant “explore” screen where Google categorizes available integrations, how to use them, and quick access to make custom shortcuts.
VI. Swipe over to the “Your Stuff” tab up top.
VII. Tap on “Add Reminder” to trigger Google Assistant.
VIII. You’ll now be taken through the hotword setup process. Teach it to recognize your voice, and you’re done! Now you can access Google Assistant by saying “OK Google!”

5. If you use Nova Launcher :-
I. Find an empty spot on your home screen and long-press to add something new.
II. Tap on “Widgets.”
III. Under “Nova Launcher” tap and hold “Activities” and drag it to your home screen.

IV. Scroll down and find the “Google App.”
V. Tap on it to expand it, and select com.google.android.apps.gsa.staticplugins.opa.hq.OpaHqActivity.
VI. This will add a new “Google Assistant” icon to your home screen which is a shortcut to this activity. Tap on this icon.
VII. You’ll now find yourself within the new Assistant “explore” screen where Google categorizes available integrations, how to use them, and quick access to make custom shortcuts.
VIII. Swipe over to the “Your Stuff” tab up top.
IX. Tap on “Add Reminder” to trigger Google Assistant.
X. You’ll now be taken through the hotword setup process. Teach it to recognize your voice, and you’re done! Now you can access Google Assistant by saying “OK Google!”

If you follow all the steps correctly, then you'll probably get the Google Assistant.

Hello Friends,
Wouldn't it be cool if you type an expression in your calculator and your calculator speaks out the answer. Yes, it is possible on Windows or maybe on Linux as well (I haven't tried that yet).

I programmed it myself with a low level programming Language i.e Batch Programming. It is easy to Understand and to learn.I am only showing the working of the compiled version. If this post hits 25 likes, I will upload the source code of the program and all the utilities I used to make it work.

DOES MEMORY CLEANING APPS REALLY WORK?

Hello friends,
Today we're going to discuss about the MEMORY CLEANING apps. There are tons of Apps available on the Google Play Store. The most common examples are Clean Master, CCleaner,etc. Such apps claim to be boosting your smartphone. But do you know what they really do?

Basically, these apps automatically clean the cache memory and junk files on your phone. Here is the detailed information on what these apps do :-

1. Clean up Cache memory :-
As the Android system and its Apps work, they create some data and save it in the form of cache. This cache is used again when we reopen the apps.

2. Clean up Junk Files :-
Junk Files are those files which are there in the memory for a long time and have not been used. This may contain APKs of installed apps, data left by applications after being uninstalled, garbage data of no use.

3. Memory Boosting :-
Every Android Service and App require their space in the RAM to work. To free RAM these apps stop other apps running in the background especially the Social media Apps.

4. Ad Junk :-
Whenever you browse internet, you may see various Ads appearing on to your browser, these ads save their data on a temporary location on your device. Sometimes it happens that these files remain on your device as they are. These apps clean these Junk.

But, all the things written above can be done manually. Now moving on why you shouldn't use this apps :-

1. Eat Battery Life :-
The main function of these apps is to remove the cache memory of the apps. But as we use the apps the cache is generated again and again. These cycle continues and battery drains.

2. Keep a watch over your activities :-
These apps are always running in the background and keep a watch over your activities.
3. Slow down your phone :-
Yes, these apps claim to be boosting your device, but every time we close an app, its cache is deleted. When we launch the app next time, these apps regenerate this cache and it takes more time for the Apps to launch.

4. Social Networking apps :-
These apps clear all the background apps and their services so the Social apps won't be giving you any notification.

5. Unnecessarily Consume space :-
We can clean up our junk files and cache memory manually according to our necessities. But by keeping these apps our storage is unnecessarily Consumed.

So, we've seen what Clean Master and similar apps do. Some of it is useful but some is very harmful for our services. But , I personally recommend that you should stop using such apps if you want a healthy battery.
