The composition was created by me (Leyton FRANKLIN) in 1990. It is a combination of acrylic paints and collage on canvas. Each picture is a clipping showing the sensation of people (crying, laughing and dancing) in their fight for freedom. It depicts the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989

with democracy on the march. They are free at last. In the middle of the composition is an opening in the brown wall with the blue sky coming through.

The purple background pushes the other colours forwards, The image in the left in white takes the eyes along the painting to the other mother (middle) in white and to the right (mother in White also) of the composition. You have seen the whole composition.

1. "A 'up-river' scene."

The composition represents a landscape up one of the rivers in the Essequibo Coast or could be in any other River (miles away from the main village in the country) in Guyana. The landscape has a Church in the background with a school built in front and close to each other. There is a boat (means of transportation for people living in such areas) in the water and is used by students (that do not live in walking distance) to attend school or church. The school is operated by the priest (who lives in a section of the church could be the principal) of the school and is assisted by local teachers. There is depiction of the rough water in the river and it is in the lower section with a red boat that invites and leads the eyes inwards to the main composition.

2. "A home & rice lands."

In farming areas in Guyana a scene like this was not unusual when i was 'growing-up.' For that matter about one mile out of Georgetown, farmlands with rice can be seen as a person travelled along the East Coast by train, bus or car in the 40s/50s/60s/. I don't know it the scene is like that now. The scene i have painted from memory is away from the main road and about one or more miles inland ('back-dan'). I have used the lower section of the composition for the river or 'water-way' as it is called at home. The water leads to the boat 'tied-up' at a landing that is high as the land. From here one goes into the main composition with the home(red roof and lower section in green), 'walk-way' and rice field behind the house. The light blue and white clouds in the background pushes the rest of the composition forward. This is how it was in the olden days.

1. "The old-house."

The image was painted after i returned from Barbados. It represents the way houses/homes were built in the olden days. These homes were built on rocks, one bed-room and a sitting-room. The kitchen was built away from the house. Around the home the family planted banana/plantain trees and other green leaf vegetables. The roof of the home was painted red and in most cases the outer wooden walls was not painted. The walls indoor had news paper pasted on them. The modern homes are higher and larger like houses built in Guyana.

2. "The old school."

Most schools in Guyana/British Guiana (as i moved around with my family because of my father's who was a government officer) that were in areas that had a small population (in the country) were not built very high. They were built a few inches from the ground like my depiction above (from memory). In most cases under the British system the school building (school-house) was either painted white or left unpainted. Another factor was the school was always built on its own parcel of land that had a fence and gate. In fact my first 'school-building' was half the size of my visual expression and built about one foot away from the ground. It was an open concept divided into four different classes and was not painted.

1. "Never bite the hand that feeds you." means have respect for the person that is nice to you (friend). The African mask (with a dark background) has a hand in its mouth. In this case the hand that is bitten did not respect the person who is biting. The head (is also dark but is high lighted with colour lines) of the image is depicted as a question mark and the hand in the mouth is in the shape of a spoon.
2. "The morning after." depicts a "Drunk-man" (face not recognized) leaning against a house for support and sitting on the ground with the empty rum bottles at his feet. Notice the white shoes (in the viewer's space) at the bottom of the composition leading the eyes to the white t-shirt. As a young boy 'growing-up' it was a scene i saw on Saturday or Sunday morning. Men laying drunk on the street or in a yard after a night of drinking 'brown-run'.

This painting with the blue and white background pushes the many colours in the dress forward. There is a lot of energy in this piece. The lime green in the head dress is also in the body of the dress.

A creative composition showing the loving mother and children in UNITY. They are united within two triangles that are also united and equal. The red triangle is pointing 'up-wards' to the creator and the orange triangle with mother & children is pointing downwards to mother earth (where we will return). The background is dark green depicting nature/life.
