How to Mix Prints and Patterns

I used to think that mixing different prints and patterns was taboo. But now I’m starting to realize that when they are done right, they can create gorgeous combinations and make you look incredibly fashionable. Still when it comes to pattern and print mixology I’m a big wus. So I did a little research on how exactly to pull this off and found a few tips worth sharing:

Varying the scale is Important

Wearing medium/large patterns with small patterns create balance. On the other hand, mixing a bunch of large patterns can make you look wider and combining too many small prints can make your overall appearance look too busy.

Same color family

Your patterns should share the same color scheme. There should be at least one color that creates a strong tie that will unite the whole outfit in harmony.

Break it up a bit

Breaking your outfit up with a basic, solid color gives you a more balanced and modern look. Adding basic colors is one of the best strategies to wearing prints subtly.

Some prints can be neutrals

Prints like tweed, small houndstooth, black and white or navy blue and white are so classic and understated, they become a neutral and can be topped with a couple of other print pieces.

Inexpensive Flower Pot Centerpieces

As fun as throwing parties and entertaining cab be, it can also get expensive. I’m always intrigued by the use relatively inexpensive and ordinary objects to create interesting party décor. Here are some pretty creative uses I found for using flower pots as centerpieces.

For a Thanksgiving centerpiece, these pots were spray painted black and decorated with card stock and felt.

An urn and large dry branches were used to create this amazing Halloween centerpiece, although a flower pot could have been easily substituted.

Flower pots filled with moss were also used to create the bases for these pretty Easter jellybean topiaries.

Hurricane candles surrounded by greenery inside mini flower pots helped bring together this beautifully rustic Christmas centerpiece.

Here they stuck flags and white lollipop sticks with Patriotic cutouts in a metal tub to create this festive 4^th of July piece.

A chocolate bouquet was made using chocolate melts and heart and flower shaped molds.

Best Dessert Buffet Ever-Strawberry Shortcake Bar

I’ve been a big fan of dessert/candy buffets for a while now. I’ve combed through hundreds of amazing and meticulously color-coordinated creations; and I even bought dessert buffet guru Amy Atlas’ book. I’ve done several variations of dessert bars for clients and at home—like the ice cream sundae bar I created for my daughter’s last birthday. But this has to be the awesome-est idea I’ve come across so far! The simplicity of it is what really makes this a home run for me. Darn, why didn’t I think of this?!

A huge decorative bowl of strawberries will be the star of the show.

Use traditional toppings and some creative toppings too.

And a sample strawberry shortcake menu is such a nice touch.

I'm totally doing this at my next event!

Sooo, I know I haven't posted in a while...shame on me :-( But I have a perfectly good reason for why I have a little less free time these days. I'm so excited to announce that I've been working on planning, styling, designing a bridal photo shoot!

This wonderful photographer Olivia Jacob, chose me to help her execute a styled bridal photo shoot in the historic Georgetown section of Washington, DC. We've put together a great team of people, and I've been hard at work coming up with concepts and sourcing items to make my vision come to life. It's a lot of work! And there are so many details! But I'm loving every minute of it. The big day is coming up in only 1 week and I can hardly contain my excitement. The photos will be submitted and hopefully published in a wedding blog. Do I smell a new career in photo styling...hmmm. JK

Tips for a Romantic Homemade Valentine’s Dinner

Hey fellas, this one is for you. I realize that not all of you make Valentine’s Day a big to-do; and that’s o.k. Sometimes a small romantic gesture can go a long way. Having said this, I know a lot of you will try preparing a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner for your boo’s—which is great. I also happen to know that while often your hearts are in the right place, there are 2 major common pitfalls that many men face when attempting romantic Valentine’s Day feats: 1) lack of preparation and 2) overlooking important details. Cover these two bases and you should be able to achieve the spectacular reaction you had in mind. The Here are some tips to help:

Preparation

While procrastination gets even the best of us, when preparing a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner try to start planning at least 1 week ahead.

1. At least five days ahead make your menu selections and research recipes if you need to. There are many great websites food recipes. Don’t get hung up on the “special Valentine’s Day” recipes that you find out there. Be smart and know your limitations—if you’re a great cook than go for it! But if sounds too advanced for you kitchen skill-set than opt for something simpler or think about her favorite foods. A little experimentation is good, but this is not the time to completely wing it.

2. Read your recipe from start to finish before you begin and familiarize yourself with it. Are there cooking methods or ingredients that you’re not familiar with? If so do a little research, find out what they are. Most recipes tell you how long they take to prepare, if it’s your first time add about 20-30 minutes for a more realistic estimate of how long it will take you to finish. Is there prep work involved? Do you have to let something marinate for a period of time? Is there a lot of chopping or other type of ingredient preparation involved? These are all things you should at least have an idea about before you get started.

3. Remember cleaning up is part of the process. What’s the point of wowing her with an amazing meal if she’ll be stuck cleaning up your mess afterwards. Leave time for cleanup both before and after the meal (very important).

Details

While the food is obviously important, don’t overlook the importance of ambiance and presentation. These two things can go a long way in turning an otherwise o.k. dinner into an amazing and romantic “experience”. Heck even if you cheat a little and buy the food instead of making it yourself you can really sell it if you ace this part.

1. Ambiance. French; spelled [am-bee-uh ns], noun, the mood, character, quality, tone, atmosphere, etc. You will need to create this by building upon many details, so take some time and think about this. Pick a theme, a color or even an idea. You need something to give your work direction.

2. Next comes the setting. Where will you be dining (on the kitchen table, picnic in front of the fireplace, al fresco, etc…)?

3. Décor. So much to choose from in this category. Plates, flatware, glasses, napkins, table cover, centerpieces, flowers, lighting, so on and so forth.

This may seem like a daunting task but it’s the details that say I love you and trust me, she WILL notice the extra effort. Here are some ideas to get you started:

I got this amazing recipe from Bakerella. I actually made the "in a jar" version of theses cookies give away as Christmas presents last year. But the recipe is sooo good I decided to make some to put in a care package for my boyfriend's son who is going back to college this week (and for myself). They make amazing gifts in a jar or just as homemade cookies.

I keep a few a of these treat boxes around cause you never know when you might need to put together a quick gift. Line the inside with tissue paper and secure with a pretty ribbon.

I’m participating in a biggest looser contest at my job where the winner takes home a $120 pot of money. That’s not really why I’m dieting, I’m always trying to lose weight, the money is just a nice incentive. But this afternoon, after my 280-calorie healthy choice lunch, I got the hankering for smoothing sweet (nothing new). Since I had to drop something off in the basement (which is where the snack machines are) I took my wallet with me and stopped by the snack machine on the way back to my office.

Now I know snack machines are usually not a dieter’s friend. But I’ve been tracking my food intake carefully and I knew I’d had a light caloric breakfast and lunch so I figured I could spare a sweet snack. Standing in front of the snack machine (Jeopardy tune playing in my head) it all came down to Peanut M&M’s or a honey bun. Hmmmm, decisions, decisions! Went for the honeybun…it’s been a long time since I had one. Got to my desk and about half way through the honey bun I look on the back at the nutritional info and daaaaayyyuuum! 590 freakin’ calories!!!! I mean c’mon!

It’s not like I didn’t know honey buns weren’t healthy but Geez Louise…I could’ve had a big mac and some fries (or even peanut M&Ms which by the way were $0.10 more than the jumbo calorie bomb I ate but that’s a whole other subject). Of course I didn’t see that it was a jumbo honey bun when I bought it; it looked regular sized to me (but maybe that’s just cause I’m greedy). Well, like I said, I was only half way done with it but after the initial shock I was so disappointed in myself already that I just scarfed down the rest of it along with my guilt. I kinda understand how bulimics feel because I wanted to get it out of me so badly…but I hate the feeling of vomiting, that plus I’m already overweight so no sense in starting yet another issue I will just have to overcome. I just want to say:

Pomp and Circumstance, Galas and Balls

Washington is a great place to be around inauguration time…especially if you like lots of pomp and circumstance. It’s a pretty big deal around here. The upcoming 57th Presidential Inauguration is drawing big crowds, although not the history-making event that drew 1.8 million people in 2009, still the city and surrounding areas are all abuzz with preparations for the event. Tickets have been sold out for weeks, good luck getting a hotel room for a reasonable price, city residents are putting rooms up for rent on craigslist for ridiculous sums of money, public transportation systems are preparing to operate for 22 hours on inauguration day and some museums along the Pennsylvania Avenue parade route are even offering special packages for viewing the presidential inauguration…like I said, it’s a big deal.

At least 46 inaugural balls and galas will be held in honor of the Presidential Inauguration throughout the DC area in the next week! However, the official inaugural balls are usually by invitation only because they’re the only ones the President, Vice President and their families make an appearance at. President Barack Obama is drawing an A-list of performers for his inaugural festivities, and the massive official balls are expected to draw more than 40,000 revelers.

With so much talk of grand balls and galas I feel like I’m living in a Disney movie taking place in 17th Century France, lol. Well, this got me thinking…what exactly is the difference between a ball and a gala? From my party and event planning experience I know they are often used interchangeably. So I did some research and it turns out that there is a difference.

Originally, a formal ball was always private, by invitation-only, and usually also restricted by social class. Gala events on the other hand, are festive and open to the public, although it is generally restricted to those who buy a ticket. Today however, many balls have become ticketed events open to the public, rather than invitation-only. Modern usage additionally associates most gala events with marketing or fundraising for charity.

Regardless of what you call them, they’re basically a prom for grownups. And just like prom I think everyone should experience at least one in their lifetime!

Have you made resolutions to be smarter about money matters in 2013? I know I have. One of the little habits I want to adopt is using coupons to save money on groceries. But one thing I’ve learned about New Year’s resolutions is that you gotta start small and keep it manageable otherwise your enthusiasm and good intentions tend to fizzle out before Valentine’s Day.

While I don’t want to become a serious couponer, I do want to find a way to stay motivated to clip, organize and remember my coupons at the store. I think if I had an effective organization system for coupons, I would be much more likely to use them before they expire and be able to find what I need quickly at checkout. So I started looking up information about couponing and thought I'd share some pretty nifty coupon organizers I came across.

Treat of the Week-Flan

Flan is a very popular caramel custard dessert that is eaten throughout Latin America. Each country has their little variation of the dessert but usually contains some type of sweetened or condensed milk, sugar and sometimes eggs. I cheated a little with my flan and just used the Goya instant mix, but I do have a yummy Cuban recipe that I want to share with you. I got this recipe from 3 Guys from Miami; their version has a secret ingredient, lemon rind!

Before you begin you should know for this dessert we use a technique called a “baño de Maria” or "bain marie" as it’s known in French cuisine. It’s basically a water bath or a double broiler technique which allows the food to heat slower and not cook too fast and prevents air bubbles. I say this at the beginning because it could determine what type of mold you use for your flan. The technique basically involves placing your flan mold inside another larger container filled with hot water. So make sure you have a container large enough to fit your flan mold. I use a large aluminum pan (like the ones you use for turkey), fill it with water about 2 inches deep. The 3 Guys recipe uses individual ovenproof custard cups for their flan mold, although you can use any heat resistant mold (preferably aluminum—the sturdy kind not the disposable kind). I pour my flan mixture into a round aluminum cake mold, and set it inside the larger turkey pan with the water (you can use a heat proof plate or a small cooling rack help stabilize the mold in the water). Once you get this down the rest is easy.

INGREDIENTS:

1 lemon rind, carefully pared
1 cup milk
1 cinnamon stick
3/4 cup sugar (for the caramel)
8 whole eggs
1 cup sugar (for the custard)
2 cups heavy cream

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Carefully remove the outer rind from a lemon. Don't cut too deep or you'll cut into the pulp! You just want the outer, mostly yellow layer!

Scald the milk by bringing it quickly to a boil with the lemon rind and cinnamon stick, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and let stand for 15 minutes. Remove lemon rind and cinnamon stick after the milk cools.

Now for the caramel (which is the trickiest party I think). Heat 3/4 cup sugar in the bottom of a metallic pan at medium-low heat until it begins to melt. The sugar will turn into a thick syrup with a dark brown color. The key is to let it melt it gradually and stir it constantly to prevent burning!

Quickly remove from heat and pour into each one of your individual custard cups (or whatever mold you’re using). Tilt back and forth to cover the bottom and sides of the dish. The syrup will harden as it cools to form a thick shell. During the baking process, this shell magically transforms itself into a delicious dark caramel syrup.

For the custard, beat the eggs and 1 cup sugar on medium speed with an electric mixer until thoroughly mixed and frothy; stir in the warm milk and the cream. Pour into the caramel-lined mold(s) and set it into a baño de Maria (a.k.a. water bath, a.k.a. double broiler).

Bake for 1 ½ hrs or until a knife comes out of center clean. Remove the flan mold from the baño de Maria and let it cool in the dish. It can be eaten warm but I like mine cold so I let refrigerate after it cools.

Before serving, loosen sides with a knife and flip onto your serving dish. Dust with a little cinnamon or nutmeg (optional).

Anyone that knows me is aware that Winter is my least favorite time of year. I’m a Summer baby all the way. Even though our Washington, DC Winters are considered mild to many, I’m pretty miserable right about now. Anyway, I’m trying to be positive and turn my lemons into lemonade (frozen lemonade).

Treat of the Week-Layered Strawberry Trifle

Happy New Year!

Here is my treat for the week. I had some leftover strawberries and whipped topping from a Christmas dessert I made last week and decided to hurry up and use them before they spoiled. This is a super simple dessert that my mom taught me to make years ago and it seemed like a perfectly lazy way to use these leftover ingredients.

Here is what you will need:
fresh strawberries (or any fruit)
1 tub of whipped topping
1 can of whipped topping
a small yellow cake, vanilla cake or sponge cake (prepared)
vanilla pudding (prepared)
chocolate pudding (prepared)

Instructions:
Prepare vanilla pudding and chocolate pudding according to package instructions. Let cool (I let mine refrigerate overnight). Prepare cake mix according to package instructions. I didn't have a box of cake mix laying around so I made a batch of vanilla cake from a simple recipe I have. Let cake cool. In a trifle bowl (or any other large glass bowl), use your hands to crumble the cake until you have a 1/2 inch thick layer of cake crumbs at the bottom. Choose either one of the puddings and pour on top of the cake. Using a spoon or spatula, spread it out evenly towards the edges being careful not to smear the sides of the bowl so that your layers look defined. Add whipped topping from the tub using the same technique. Add another layer of crumbled cake. If you have enough strawberries (I didn't so I skipped this step) add a layer of sliced strawberries now. Now add the second pudding. Finally, use the whipped topping from the can to make a pretty layer of whipped cream at the very top. Start on the outside work your way towards the middle using a circular pattern. Place sliced strawberries on top in any kind of pattern you like.

This is a very simple dessert to make and you can get very creative with it. Feeling lazy? Cut out half of the work by just buying pre-made pound cake or sponge cake and jello pudding cups. This trifle is also very diet-friendly since you can choose to make it with sugar-free jello pudding and light whipped cream. Buen Provecho!

Tips for A Family Friendly New Year’s Eve Party

New Year’s Eve isn’t traditionally the most family-centric holiday. But if you are tasked with hosting a family-friendly NYE party this year, here are some tips to help you cater to folks of all ages.

First, always check with your neighbors about any noise and parking issues that might arise. Second, make sure you have plenty of food, drinks and entertainment for everyone.

Finger food and appetizers work really well for NYE parties since they usually start after dinner time and go on late into the night. Make sure you have some non-alcoholic beverages and coffee available for those that need it. Sparkling apple cider is a great option to serve so kids and others that don’t drink alcohol can feel included. Remember that as a host(ess) you are not only responsible for your guests’ safety during the party, but after they leave your party as well. Never let an intoxicated person drive home and always have the number of a local cab company handy, a designated driver on standby, and a place where someone can crash for the night.

Family-friendly party themes include:

Round the Campfire—if the weather is nice set up some outdoor tents, make smores, hot cocoa, play outdoor games, burn sparklers or set off fireworks.

Family game night—set up different “game stations” throughout the house…casino games for the adults, board games for the kids and team games like charades.

For the kids:

Arts and crafts—do you have old magazines laying around? You can have children make a collage by cutting out some of the things they have enjoyed over the past year. Check out this article for more ideas on kid-friendly NYE crafts.

Moon Bounce—if the weather is nice consider renting a moon bounce. Kids can have hours of fun on these things and expend a lot of excitable energy (hint, hint).

Pajama Party—babies, young children, and some older adults won't make it to midnight. Have a quiet comfortable place for them to wind down. You can also have kids bring their pajamas, blankets, pillows and stuffed animals and create a sleepover theme.

Kids always need to be supervised. Having a teenager or older child oversee the childrens' activities can make him or her feel more involved. Make sure an adult pops in from time to check up on everybody.

For Teens:

If you have a bunch of teens at your party consider hosting a black light dance party with plenty of music, glow sticks, and snacks. Make sure your teen and other partygoers understand the household rules that will need to be abided by and check up on them from time to time.

Karaoke can also work well for this age group.

An arcade/gamer party would be another popular option for teen-friendly activities.

My Favorite Christmas Gifts

I hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas. We were blessed to have had another wonderful Noche Buena with lots of food, laughter and presents. They say it’s better to give than to receive…a motto I like to live by. So instead of talking about the favorite gifts I received, I chose instead to share with you some of the favorite gifts I gave this holiday season.

My Time

This past Sunday my daughter, my boo and I went to the DC Jewish Community Center to help wrap gifts for the needy and the homeless. It was an enjoyable and needed change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. It was also a wonderful bonding opportunity for us as a family in a different but good way. As I was assembling gift bags for the homeless with basic necessities such as toothpaste, a toothbrush, soap, lotion, shampoo, warm gloves, hats and socks; it really hit me how blessed we truly are to have what we have. I really appreciate the DCJCC putting together a wonderful volunteer program that made it so easy to find opportunities for families to work on projects together. I wish more community programs made it this easy for busy people participate in giving back to their communities. Preservation Of Family History

I’m super, super blessed to still have both of my eight-something year old grandparents with me. As an added bonus, Mima and Pipo as I endearingly call them, are still in fairly good health and live close by. My daughter has gotten to meet and grow up with her great-grandparents—what a special thing! I’m very close to both of my maternal grandparents as they raised me for several years while I was still living in Cuba. But, like many of us I find myself often taking these amazing things in that happen in our everyday lives for granted. This year, I gave my grandparents—and my whole family really—a gift of family history preservation.

I can remember being a little girl and my grandfather telling me stories about his grandfather. But it wasn’t until recently that it dawned on me—wow, he can trace our family history back 6 generations! We’re talking the mid 1800’s here!! So, my gift to him may seem a little weird to most... I got him a tape recorder. I found the simplest old school tape recorder I could find on Amazon and bought him an entire pack of blank cassette tapes (didn’t know they still made these). I asked him on his downtime or whenever a memory or thought of the past came to mind, to pop in a tape and press record. I explained that his memories and life experiences were treasures that he could leave for us and our family for generations to come. I intend on writing a family memoir someday (but probably not for a long time) and without these precious memories of his, it wouldn’t be as meaningful. Unfortunately, our family emigrated from another country fairly recently, so sites like ancestry.com won’t really help us trace our family history. He is our ancestry.com I explained. He laughed. I think it made him feel special that I appreciated his wisdom and years of experience and that they really meant something to our family.

And I can’t leave my Mima out of this project. I asked her to also add anything she felt was pertinent to this ad-hoc documentary and I also gave her a blank recipe book. For obvious reasons; I mean who doesn’t love their grandma’s cooking? At first I felt weird about giving them these somewhat morbid gifts, but think the way I explained it really helped them understand that it wasn’t intended to be morbid in any way. I just really value their wisdom and appreciate them as the matriarch and patriarch of our family.

So there you have it. Another wonderful Navidad we were given to share in the presence of family and friends. What were some of the favorite gifts you gave?
