Nzala yakwaMbotho, sicela uncedo bethuna, sizama ukudibanisa umlando wethu. Below is a short history of our people that still needs to be investigated and verified. I decided to post it because I wanted to get the ball rolling towards putting something together. It has been a couple of years now, we've been trying to get information so I implore you to please read through, speak to parents, grandparents and help us further research and verify our history so that we can produce a book that everyone can have access to. Please note that the information contained in this document still needs work but it is a starting point. It is up to each one of us to come to the table with something, whether it's a correction, translation or verification. Your contribution will be highly appreciated.

Mlotshwa succeeded Chitho. He had many wives, his great wife maNzimakwe who bore him his heir, Siyephu. Another wife from the Majola clan gave him the son Mancengeza. When Mancengeza was killed a split happened in the family with a lot of people leaving Harding and going to Flagstaff. This also led to the loss of the ability to control rain that the Mbotho clan had.

In the end Marhelani maGasa's son was placed on the throne despite the numerous claims
6. Marhelani (6 wives but uyena wahlulahlula ifamily waze wazeka kwaMbotho (Mdleko) wavelwa ukugula emamusha wafa izinyawo kwa ngena his Mageba	6. Marhelani had six wives. He divided the family, took a wife from Mbotho (Mdleko) and was suddenly killed by an illness. He was succeeded by Mageba

After the arrest of Mageba and Mtshikilana, Mageba asked that Mabhadu kaSofayela kaMrhabula kaMabhida be put in his place but the chiefs changed this and decided that Magesini kaMarhelani be placed on the throne. This was followed by a terrible time in the palace where the King Mageba's children died. When the King came back from jail, he also died following his children. His only surviving child Mthetheleli, who was the son of maDlamini, a daughter of Mtyali was arrested. He was then succeeded by Chief Velela

His wife and all his children also died. He is still alive

Mbotho Family Gathering - Zimbane

A clan is a group of people united by actual or perceived kinship and descent. Even if lineage details are unknown, clan members may be organized around a founding member or apical ancestor. Clans can be most easily described as tribes or sub-groups of tribes. The word clan is derived from 'clann' meaning 'family' in the Irish and Scottish Gaelic languages. Clans preceded more centralized forms of community organization and government; they are located in every country. Members may identify with a coat of arms or other symbol to show they are an independent clan.

In different cultures and situations, a clan may mean the same thing as other kin-based groups, such as tribes and bands. Often, the distinguishing factor is that a clan is a smaller part of a larger society such as a tribe, a chiefdom, or a state.Clans in indigenous societies are likely to be exogamous, meaning that their members cannot marry one another. In some societies, clans may have an official leader such as a chieftain or patriarch; in others, leadership positions may have to be achieved, or people may say that 'elders' make decisions.

Mbothos as a clan practise Zulu and Xhosa cultures and our clan names reflect this. Below is a list of the clan names found in both cultures. The similarities within the clan names do confirm that we are one family. The list is not exhaustive and is a live list. We do encourage people to come forward with any other clan names that have been left behind, so that we can include them in the list and update it as we move along.

Mbotho Family Gathering, 14 July 2012, Ngqeleni

The next family gathering will be held on the 14th July 2012 at Ngqeleni in the Eastern Cape. This is where the Mbotho Family Trust document will be discussed and finalised.

All members of the Mbotho Clan are encouraged to attend this gathering to make sure that it is a success. For more information you can have a look at the minutes of the two previous gatherings in Zimbane, Umtata and Harding, KZN.

The organisers are encouraged to design t-shirts for this gathering as it was done for the gathering in Harding, KZN. The current Mbotho emblem can be used to make these t-shirts

Minutes of the 2nd Annual Family Gathering Meeting Held on the 1st October 2011 at KwaMbotho in Harding, KwaZulu Natal at 10h30.

1. Opening

The meeting was opened at 10h30 by the Master of Ceremonies Mr SH Xaso.

2. Opening Prayer

The MC handed over to Mr Mzamo for the opening prayer. He spoke about the importance of building especially as we were embarking on a building journey as a family. He spoke about the importance of coming together as one for the success of our nation.

3. Welcome

All the guests in the hall were welcomed and were told to relax and feel at home.

4. Apologies

Apologies were tendered for the Chief by Tat’ uMshikilana. He stated that the chief was tied up in a Contralesa meeting called by the Government and could not get away to come to the gathering.

5. Representatives

It was requested that the representatives for the Mbotho families in the hall each come up to introduce themselves so as to have a clear record of the people who attended the gathering.

6. Family History

The family history was still being compiled and the representatives were requested to forward whatever information they might have so that it can be compiled into a document that can be communicated to everyone in the family before the next family gathering in Ngqeleni in 2012. 6.1 Electronic Media Activities

Ziyanda Xaso went through the activities that have been occurring so far on the internet. She stated that on facebook there were two group pages that were established for the family namely the Mbotho Youth Movement Group and the Mshikilana ninaboMazama Group.

She also reported that there was currently a Mbotho Youth Movement blog site being used to communicate all the family activities to the youth of the family. She reiterated the importance of making sure that the youth is involved and included in all the family activities as they are the future.

7. Family Trust

Mthobisi Mbotho went through the family trust document. He stated that there were currently 6 committees established under the trust namely the following:

7.2 Planning and Events Management Committee

7.3 Education, Research and Cultural Committee

7.4 Business, Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Committee

7.5 Youth Development Committee

7.6 Funeral Scheme Committee

He stated that the reason for setting up the trust is to ensure that as a family we are able to assist each other and ensure the unity of our family. He stated that there would be branches for each committee representing the different provinces and the provincial branches will be represented in the national committee to ensure communication between the provincial and national branches.

Everyone was encouraged to distribute and comment on the document so that it can be a document that is owned by the family and is done in consultation with everyone.

He also raised the issue of the T-shirts stating that these were the initiative of Ziyanda Xaso and that they were available for sale at a price of R170. He stated that the price is the actual cost of producing the T-shirts and that absolutely no profit has been gained from making them as the printing of the names in the front and back of the shirts was expensive. He stated that even people who were interested in having the t-shirts at a later stage needed to contact Ziyanda so that she could make arrangements for them to get the shirts.

8. Questions

A chance was given for questions of clarity regarding the document.

8.1 An alternative to e-mails was requested

The meeting was told that e-mail was the cheapest way to communicate because as the trust was not yet fully functional and established there were no funds in the trust therefore people were using their own resources to distribute the document and therefore e-mails were currently the cheaper alternative. People were encouraged where possible to print and distribute the document to other family members.

8.2 Membership cards and Car stickers

There was a request for membership cards and car stickers from the meeting. It was decided that those would be taken under advisement and considered for the future.

8.3 Membership Fee

The membership fee was discussed and the following suggestions were brought forward:

o A joining fee of R150

o A joining fee of R50

o It was suggested that the joining fee be separate for working and unemployed individuals. It was then decided that the joining fee should be uniform but affordable as distinguishing between the two classes would be an administrative nightmare.

The two fees were voted for and the joining fee of R50 had more votes and was therefore approved and passed at the meeting.

9. Decisions

It was agreed that the next family gathering to be held in Ngqeleni would be held on the 14th July 2012.

10. Vote of thanks

Mr Mboto thanked everyone at the meeting for attending and asked that they spread the word regarding the gathering on the 14th July 2012 at Ngqeleni. He stated that he was thankful to everyone for making the time to be at the gathering and said that we needed to unite to ensure the success of this project.

11. Closure

The gathering was closed with a prayer.

Preamble

The Mbotho Family Trust is a group of persons concerned with the social (culture, heritage, historical research, education) and economic (skills development, entrepreneurship, business opportunities) development of Mbotho clan names.

Mission

The mission of the Mbotho Family Trust is to promote development, heritage and protect the identity of Mbotho Clan group. In particular to enhance the use of resources at the disposal of the trust for the benefit of all members of the trust.

Definition of Terms

Member - A person is a member in terms of item 5.
Mbotho - The surname that include among other Mbotho clan name: Yalo, Nani, Ngcingwana, Hleza, Vuke, Xaso.

KwaMbotho - area identified on the map, forming Appendix A to these items.
Area of Interest - The area of interest of the Trust is the KwaMbotho, history of the family of KwaMbotho.
The Trust - The Mbotho Family Trust.
Executive Committee - The committee established in terms of item 9

Revision of this document

The title of the document file will be 'MFT', then the present or current year, followed by the latest revision of this document. e.g. MFT2011rev1. The person when making changes to this document should remember to change the revision number. Each year the document title is changed, with the relevant year and rev1 as the first change. The person updating the magnetic 'Master document' should retain the 'Master', with a backup kept in a separate place to the 'Master document'. Whoever requires a copy, can be issued only a paper copy, of the latest revision for reference purpose. The magnetic medium of the 'Master document' will be password protected, so that only one (1) original is available. This 'Master document' always remains the property of Mbotho Family Trust.

Constitution

1. Name

The name of this Trust shall be Mbotho Family Trust (hereinafter referred to as the Trust).

2. Mission Statement

3. Goals

In order to achieve the Mission of the Trust the goals of the Trust are;

3.1 To act as an apolitical body.

3.2 To promote dialogue between various Institutions concerned with the development and-/or promotion heritage within the benefits of the trust.

3.3 To assist in providing relevant advice on the management of the Mbotho identity and its area of interest.

3.4 To obtain the support for the Mission from family while noting that fund is aiming at developing family and its area of interest.

3.5 To promote that effective action is taken in the matters affecting the Mbotho Family and its area of interest.

3.6 To promote educational opportunities for and support for the Mission from all users of the Mbotho Family Trust and its area of interest.

3.7 To collect and disburse funds in support of the Mission of the Trust.

4. Powers of the Trust

THE TRUST SHALL BE EMPOWERED;

4.1 To buy, sell, own, exchange, donate, lease or hire movable or immovable property.

4.2 To conduct banking, savings, fixed deposit or other similar accounts at any registered financial institution.

4.3 To hire staff as deemed necessary and approved by the Executive Committee.

4.4 To organise fund raising activities in any form within South Africa and beyond the borders of South Africa.

4.5 To receive or disburse donations in cash or in kind in pursuit of the Mission of the Trust.

4.6 To amend the Constitution of the Trust in terms of Article 11.

5. Limited Liability

5.1 The Trust is not formed for any purpose of gain and no member shall be liable for any debts or obligations of the Trust save only to the extent of any amount due to the Trust.

5.2 The income of the Trust shall be applied solely towards the promotion of the Mission of the Trust. No portion shall be distributed except by the way of dividend for service rendered or the reimbursement of expenses incurred on behalf of the Trust. The Executive Committee shall approve such compensation.

6. Membership

6.1 Individual membership: Any natural person who supports the mission and goals of the Trust, has completed an application form, kept the Executive of the Trust informed as to his/her current address and paid the due subscription fees. Such a member in good standing is entitled to one vote at a meeting of the Trust. The membership subscription fees for such an individual member shall be set by the Executive Committee from time to time and is to be reflected on the application form. The Executive Committee is entitled to reject such an application form and return the subscription fees and is also entitled to suspend or terminate such a membership. The Executive Committee is not bound to provide reasons for such a rejection.

6.2 Corporate membership: Any person (with surname related to Mbotho), corporation, organisation or association, who supports the mission and goals of the Trust, has completed an application form, kept the Executive of the Trust informed as to its current status and address and paid due subscription fees. Such a member in good standing is entitled to one vote at a meeting of the Trust. The person who signed the application form shall be deemed to be the representative for the member, unless otherwise indicated in writing. The membership subscription fees for such a corporate member shall be set by the Executive Committee from time to time and is to be reflected on the application form. The Executive Committee is entitled to reject such an application form and return the subscription fees and is also entitled to suspend or terminate such a membership. The Executive Committee is not bound to provide reasons for such a rejection.

6.3 Associate membership: A person or organisation that, in the opinion of the Executive Committee, is sympathetic to the mission and goals of the Trust. Such a member is not liable for any subscription fees and does not have the right to vote at a meeting of the Trust.

6.4 Honorary membership: A person or organisation that, in the opinion of the Executive Committee, has provided a valuable service to achieve the mission and goals of the Trust. Such a member is not liable for any subscription fees and does not have the right to vote at a meeting of the Trust.

6.5 Duration of membership: All memberships shall be for one calendar year only.

7. Finance

7.1 All funds of the Trust shall be used exclusively for the benefit of the Trust, subject to the approval of the Executive Committee and Article 5.2. The Executive Committee shall approve compensation for the services rendered or expenses incurred outside normal operating requirements.

7.2 Expenditure in excess of one thousand rand (R 1 000) for any one project shall be submitted by the Executive Committee for approval by the members at the general meeting following such expenditure. This requirement does not apply in instances where specific funds have been donated to cover the full costs of a dedicated project.

7.3 The Treasurer shall table up to date statements of income and expenditure at Executive meeting as necessary. Financial report should also forward to KwaMbotho National Executive Committee meeting.

7.4 All extraordinary expenditure not previously approved in a budget shall be subject to the approval of the Executive Committee.

7.5 All cheques and any other documents committing the Trust to any financial obligation shall be signed by any three of the appointed signatories (chairperson, secretary and treasurer) or members approved by the Executive Committee.

7.6 The Trust may register at the appropriate authority to acquire the rights to raise funds.

7.7 The financial year of the Trust shall be from 1st April to 31st March.

7.8 The Trust shall appoint an Honorary Auditor. Such officer shall not be a member of the Executive Committee. Such officer shall report to the members on the financial statements of the Trust at the Annual General Meeting of the members as though the Trust were a Close Corporation.

7.9 The Trust shall have a right to open account in a recognised banking institution within the Republic of South Africa.

7.10 Executive Committee have a right and responsibility to ensure that funds are properly manage and Record Secretary keep all records of Trust Fund documentation.

8. Dissolution

8.1 The Trust may be dissolved by a Resolution passed by not less than two thirds (2/3) of the votes of the Executive Committee, including proxies.

8.2 Upon dissolution all surplus assets shall be transferred to another non-profit organisation, which has the same goals as The Trust as determined by the Executive Committee. Failing this the funds shall be handed to the Local Civic Authority to be applied to the maintenance and development of the KwaMbotho.

9. Executive Committee

An Executive Committee shall be formed to co-ordinate the activities of the Trust.

9.1 Composition The Executive Committee shall comprise:·

· A Chairman

· A Vice Chairman

· Secretary

· Record Secretary (permanent non-voting member)

· A Treasurer and / or

· Public Relations Officer (PRO)

· Representatives of sub-committees or task teams formed in terms of Article 10.

The Executive Committee has the right to invite observers and representatives from other organisations to attend its meetings.

9.2 Objectives: The objective of the Executive Committee shall be to co-ordinate the activities of the Trust in the achievement of the Mission of the Trust.

9.3 Co-option: The Executive Committee shall have the power of co-option and may appoint sub-committees or task groups for special purposes from time to time as set out in Article 10.

9.4 Voting: Each member, whether elected or co-opted, of the Executive Committee has one vote. In the event of a tie, the Chairperson has a casting vote. A simple majority shall approve resolutions.

9.5 Meetings At least four meetings of the Executive Committee shall be held each year. At least seven days notice shall be given of such meetings. · All members of the Executive Committee may contribute items for the agenda of such meetings. · Ad hoc meetings may be called as circumstances warrant. Such meetings must carry the support of at least fifty percent (50%) of the Executive Committee. · The chairman of the Trust may at his/her sole discretion call a special meeting of the Executive Committee should extraordinary circumstances require this. · The Executive Committee may invite such additional persons, as it deems desirable to attend and address its meetings from time to time. · Representatives of sub-committees or task groups shall have the right to be accompanied by one additional person to represent the interests of their committee. Such additional persons shall not be entitled to vote at the Executive Committee meeting.

9.6 Election of Committee members The members assembled at the Annual General Meeting shall elect the Committee members identified in Article 9.1.

9.7 Period of Office The term of every member of the Executive Committee shall expire at the next Annual General Meeting.· No person shall hold the office of Chairman for a period exceeding three (3) consecutive years. Such person may be re-nominated for this office after a period of one year has elapsed.

9.8 Collective responsibility The concept of 'collective responsibility' usually inherent in every committee shall apply to the Mbotho Family Trust Executive Committee. Matters discussed at Executive Committee meetings shall be decided consensus, failing which, by majority vote. The decision shall remain final, unless a member or members apply to have a revote at the next Executive meeting. No decision shall be subject to more than one (1) revote.

9.9 Confidentiality Any member of the Committee may specifically request that any matter discussed at Executive Committee meetings shall remain confidential to those attending the meeting.

9.10 Public Statements The Executive Committee shall decide at its meetings which matters shall be made public through the press. This shall be done through the Chairman, unless an alternative member is specifically nominated by the Committee to make the statement.

10. Sub-Committees and Task Groups

10.1 The Executive Committee may form a sub-committee/s or task groups to represent the interests or projects as it deems appropriate to carry out the Mission and achieve the Goals of the Trust.

10.2 All sub-committees or task groups formed in terms of Article 10.1 shall nominate two representatives to represent their interests on the Executive Committee and is then co-opted onto the Executive Committee if required. Such a representative may serve on another sub-committee or task group.

10.3 The Executive Committee may dissolve sub-committees or task groups so formed once the need for such a sub-committee or task group falls away.

10.4 The trust sub-Committees are as follow:

10.4.3 Education, Research and Cultural Unity Unit

10.4.4 Business, Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Unit

10.4.5 Youth Development Unit

11. Constitutional Amendments

11.1 At General Meetings of Members The constitution may be amended at an Annual General Meeting or Special General Meeting provided that;

· At least fourteen (14) days notice of the proposed amendments has been given in writing to the Secretary of the Executive committee.

· A copy of such notice has been sent to each member at least fourteen (14) days before the date of the relevant meeting.

· Such proposed amendment is passed by two thirds (2/3) of the votes cast by members of the Trust as defined, including proxies in writing.

11.2 By Postal Ballot The Constitution may be amended by postal ballot on condition that;

· The proposal is supported by at least three (3) members of the Executive Committee.

· The ballot shall close fourteen (14) days after despatch of the notice to members.

· Such proposed amendment is passed by two thirds (2/3) of the votes cast by members of the Trust as defined.

12. General Meetings of Members

12.1 Annual General Meeting There shall be an Annual General Meeting of the Mbotho Family Trust during the first half of each financial year at a date to be decided by the Executive Committee at which;

· The outgoing Chairman shall present a report of the executive activities since the previous Annual General Meeting.

· The Treasurer shall present audited financial statements for the year.

· The election of office bearers for the ensuing year shall take place.

· An honorary Auditor shall be appointed for the ensuing year.

12.2 General Meetings General meetings may be called at the Executive Committee discretion.

· A member of the Trust in good standing may call a general meeting by petition to Executive Committee. The Executive Committee shall issue due notice as soon as possible. The Executive Committee may hold the member liable for the costs of this meeting and may require a monetary deposit to cover these costs prior to issuing the notice.

12.3 Voting and Proxies At General Meetings of members each paid up member shall have a vote and the Chairman shall have a casting vote that may be applied at his discretion.

· Any member not able to attend a general meeting, a special general meeting or a committee meeting may give his proxy to any other member in good standing to vote in his stead. Such proxy shall be in writing and shall specify the name of the member and the proxy and whether such proxy is for a specific matter or in general. Such written proxy shall be handed to the Chairman before the commencement of the meeting to which the matter refers.

12.4 Notice of meeting Fourteen (14) days written notice shall be given of any AGM or General Meeting. Such notice shall be sent to all members of the Trust and shall include an agenda of those items proposed for discussion at the meeting. Written notices shall be sent to the current address on a database maintained by the Trust and may include e-mail or fax addresses.

12.5 Items for the Agenda Members wishing to place additional items on the agenda for discussion at the AGM or General Meeting shall submit such items to the Chairman in writing prior to the commencement of the meeting. Such items cannot be voted on or accepted at this meeting.

13. Quorum

13.1 At a duly convened members' meeting, the members present shall constitute a quorum. In the event of a tie, the Chairman has a casting vote.

13.2 At Executive Committee meetings at least fifty (50 plus 01) percent of the total of elected and co-opted members shall form a quorum.

14. Disqualification of Members

14.1 If any member acts in a manner considered prejudicial to the mission and/or well being of the Trust, the Executive Committee shall have the right to cancel such person's membership of the Trust.

14.2 A proposal to cancel membership shall be supported by a written document clearly setting out why such cancellation is proposed.

14.3 This document together with a covering letter stating the date of the meeting at which such a proposal is to be considered shall be posted by registered mail to the person concerned at least fourteen (14) days in advance of such a meeting.

14.4 The person who is the subject of the proposal shall have the right to respond to the document referred to in item 14.2 either in writing or personally at the Executive Meeting at which the proposal will be considered.

14.5 A proposal to withdraw membership shall require the supporting vote of at least two thirds (2/3) of members of the Executive Committee present at the meeting at which the proposal is considered. In the absence of such support the proposal shall fail.

14.6 Any person whose membership is cancelled by the Executive Committee may within fourteen (14) days request in writing that the proposal be put to all members at a General Meeting of members.

14.7 Upon receipt of the written request referred to in 14.6, the Executive Committee shall re-instate the person's membership and shall place the proposal upon the agenda of the next General Meeting of members. The notice of General Meeting at which the proposal is to be considered shall include the document referred to in 14.2 together with any response thereto.

14.8 The proposal to cancel membership shall require support by two thirds (2/3) of all persons attending the General Meeting at which the proposal is considered. Proxy voting will not be permitted in the vote on the proposal at the General Meeting.

Mpondo People

Mpondo, also spelled Pondo , group of Nguni-speaking peoples who have for several centuries occupied the area between the Mtata and Mtamvuna rivers in Eastern province of South Africa. The Mpondo homeland formed one of the largest parts of the former Transkei (until 1994), an independent republic that was established under the South African government’s policy of apartheid but was dissolved and reincorporated (in part) into the new province in 1994.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the Mpondo people shared with other Nguni speakers a basic social organization and material culture that set them off from other South African peoples. They settled in dispersed households. Agriculture was a female occupation. Men were responsible for cattle raising, which played a central role in both subsistence and social relations and which also formed the basis of Mpondo wealth. Patrilineal succession and exogamous marriage were the rule, and cattle were used to obtain wives through the payment of lobola (bridewealth). Political structure consisted of a number of subsidiary chiefdoms subordinated in varying degrees to a central chieftaincy under a royal lineage.

The series of wars known as the Mfecane (“The Crushing,” causing a massive migration of Nguni peoples), which resulted from the expansionist policies of the Zulu leader Shaka, brought great changes to the Mpondo in the 1820s. In 1828 the Zulu defeated them, and they fled as refugees across the Mzimvubu River, losing their cattle and their lands. Under the leadership of their chief, Faku, however, the Mpondo reorganized themselves. Faku established an army on the Zulu model and organized production of grain for sale to facilitate the rebuilding of their cattle herds. By the early 1840s Faku had re-created the Mpondo state and, in order to gain grazing land for the new Mpondo herds, had gradually reoccupied the lands to the east of the Mzimvubu River. By 1860 Faku ruled over a state containing an estimated 100,000 people.

In the 1860s European traders established many trading posts throughout Mpondo territory, and the Mpondo traded cattle and hides for agricultural implements, luxury items, and weapons. With increased use of draft animals and new agricultural techniques, agricultural productivity improved, and in the 1880s the state seemed secure. However, the colonial governments of both the Cape Colony and Natal coveted Mpondo territory, and civil conflict among competing Mpondo groups gave the Cape government under Cecil Rhodes the opportunity to annex Mpondo territory in 1894. The destruction of Mpondo political independence was paralleled in 1897 by the great continent-spanning rinderpest epidemic that decimated their herds.

To obtain fresh cattle many adult men became migrant workers in the gold mines of the Witwatersrand. Gradually, the rural economy was rebuilt, although in the early 20th century there was increased social stratification of Mpondo families based on wealth. In 1913, when the Natives’ Land Act was passed giving the best lands in South Africa to the white population, its effect on the Mpondo was less severe than elsewhere in the country; most Mpondo land remained in Mpondo possession. Later, during the 1920s and ’30s, state policies against cattle diseases ensured the survival of the cattle-oriented society of the Mpondo. The state also accepted the continued legitimacy of Mpondo chiefly institutions and the enforcement of customary law. It was therefore relatively easy for the South Africans to utilize Mpondo territory as a fundamental part of the Nguni-speaking Transkei.

King Faku was the last ruling monarch of the Mpondo kingdom in Southern Africa from 1815-1867. During his reign, he consolidated and unified several Xhosa groups and expanded the territory he had inherited from his father. In 1844, he forged an alliance with the Cape Colony and encouraged British colonization of Natal, thus ensuring his own kingdom would have boundaries that were defined according to Western standards at the time. The kingdom was eventually annexed by the British Empire, became part of the Cape Colony and is today a section of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.

Mbotho Family Meeting held on 9th July 2011

MINUTES OF THE MBOTHO FAMILY GATHERING HELD IN ZIMBANE ON SATURDAY THE 9TH JULY 2011 AT THE VUKE FAMILY HOME TO WELCOME THE CHIEF OF THE MBOTHO FAMILY.

1. ARRIVAL
Families started arriving from 09h00 in the morning in Zimbane and received a warm welcome from the Vuke branch of the Mbotho family.

2. WELCOMING
The families gathered near the kraal while awaiting the arrival of the chief. Food and meat was enjoyed by all until the arrival of the chief after 10h00. The origins of the Mbotho clan were communicated to the families.

3. A BRIEF HISTORY
OoMbotho are a clan under the late King Faku wamaMpondo. The clan is concentrated in Harding in KwaZulu Natal where the Chief currently resides.

4. PROCESSION TO THE TENT
Immediately after the arrival of the chief and his delegation, the gathering moved to the tent for the official proceedings.

5. MAIN PROGRAMME
The master of ceremony was Mr SH Xaso of the Mbotho clan from Centane.

The proceedings were opened with an opening hymn and prayer.

5.2. Welcoming
The welcoming address was done by Mr CM Vuke of the Mbotho clan from Zimbane. He told everyone to feel at home because they are home and enjoy themselves as this was a celebration and a great day for our nation.

5.6. History of the gathering
The history and the reason behind the family gathering was discussed by Zamuxolo Hleza from Lusikisiki. He stated that this process started in 2008 when the Chief’s father was still alive. The first meeting was held at UNISA in December 2008 where the turnout was less than 30. The first major gathering was then held at the Chief’s residence in Harding in 2009. The royal house then decided that they wanted to bring the Chief to his people so as to gather the families together and have an annual pilgrimage to the royal residence.

It was decided that annually in October a meeting will be held at the Royal residence and annually in July during school holidays another will be held in one of the settlement areas zamaMbotho. The Royal representatives stated that they were building the family genealogical tree (umlando). They asked that all families forward their family trees and history so that they can be collated to form the Mbotho family tree and geneology. The elders within each family were requested to record everything that they know and recall and forward it to the Royal house for collation.
It was confirmed that they next gathering at the Royal residence will be held on the 1st October 2011 in Harding KwaZulu Natal. It was also decided that the next meeting to be held outside the Royal residence will be in Ngqeleni in July 2011 and that the date will be finalised at a later stage. It was requested that each family branch make an effort to have a representative at Harding.

The chief thanked everyone for coming to the gathering and asked that everyone make an attempt to make it to the gathering in Harding in October. He reiterated the importance of the gatherings and the building of the family history and heritage. He stated this was an ongoing project to unite the family and that some of the clan’s land had been returned to the family.

Zilungisele reiterated the importance of these gatherings and asked that anyone with family history documents, family trees and family photographs please forward these to him so that they can be collated. He communicated the importance on faith, education, politics and economy in the building of our nation and clan. He confirmed the July gathering in Ngqeleni and the annual meeting in October in Harding.
It was noted that a Committee would be set up to spearhead the gathering in Ngqeleni in July 2012 in conjunction with the National Committee.
The schematic drawing of the family emblem was introduced to the crowd. It was communicated that this would be the symbol for amaMbotho and that it would be manufactured into stickers as part of the Mbotho brand and image.
