However, what does Summer mean for a High School or College Transfer Student? Well-- it means graduations are here ( and you are getting closer to your goal), school for this year is almost at a close and there is a three month break, and for perhaps JUNIORS who soon enough will be seniors --- the fear of college applications is starting to kick into swing, as it is only 101 days till colleges and universities will be hounding with all kinds of sales pitches trying to encourage you to come to their school.

This is where THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS CONSULTANT, Inc comes into play. We know you have only 101 days till college applications hit the road running, and we want to take these 101 days to help you prepare, organize, ask questions, and think through the process before that time comes.

This summer we are starting a new program--- "Collegeology 101". Our "Collegeology Workshop"TM is an overview of what the entire college admissions process that we are offering to student across the Greater Los Angeles and Kern County Areas. It is a 3-Hour Program nominally priced so that who ever you are you can attend. This program is 3-Hours long and is priced at a nominal cost so that no matter where you fall on the financial scale, there is something for you and your family.

Your school counselors are wonderful professionals, however, there is
only so much of them to go around and we can offer you more time. Even if you have your counselor for five
minutes, it is not the time require in the admissions process when you are on the verge of making one of the most important
decisions in your life. For others, their counselors may be cut due to budget cuts in their schools. Whatever you are confronted with, our highly trained staff is here to help you.

Classes are being formed now and spaces are filling up. If you are
interested in attending this workshop... and we will have several,
please email us at counselor@thecollegeadmissionsconsultant.com and give us your NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER, E-MAIL ADDRESS,
and any special instructions or requirements you might have, and we

In working with International Students who are interested in coming to the United States to complete their education, the one thing that I find is that they are very interested as to where on the scale of 1 to 4000 the school they are applying to fits in.

The one thing that an International Student should really be asking themselves is " is this the school that will really assist me in getting to where I am going?" instead of how it ranks.

As you thumb through thousands of pieces of material with each school telling you why they are the "best" for you, if you are able to meet a rigorous academic schedule, you may want to consider The University of California schools. There are 10 campuses in all, 9 which cater to undergraduates, These schools are UC - San Diego, Irvine, Riverside, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, Berkeley, Merced, Davis, and San Francisco (grad school students only)

International students are interested in the UC experience because of what it will offer — an
exceptional learning environment that fulfills their academic ambitions,
intellectual passions and desire to experience cultural diversity at
its richest -- then by all means check out the site below. The president of the University has posted on a website all the
information required for anyone who is interested in completing their
education endeavors in the United States.

If you are a student who either is a US citizen looking to study in the US or a foreign exchange student looking to finalize your education in the United States, you may want to check out this website.

Most of the time The College Admissions Consultant wil bring to you stories of opportunity or ideas.. Today, it is a little different, and a bit more disturbing.

I want to share this video with you not only because it is disturbing, but having been in a post graduate educational settings with other educators. I hear once in a while teachers, counselors, etc. talk in a similar fashion to students, and go as far as to dictate how they should talk to people.. what they should say, and how to conduct themself and putting their foot down, wondering why these people bother to be in this profession-- .We are all trained professionals on some level, and we need to uphold the ideals we have been taught.

Recently, in a professional discussion, a school teacher was "chimming in" on how to handle a sensitive situation. Her comments were rather abusive to her counterpart, as she told this teacher how to handle the situation. It was in not necessary "what" she had to say, the "conduct. and tone of voice used" to express her thoughts... which as an independent consultant, I found offensive.

In a post graduate program of counselors, many of us had to do internships at a school of our choice. My child had gone through private schools in West Los Angeles, so I knew the thinking of many of the counselors..I now wanted to see first hand the public school setting.

I contacted the local school and got in. Unfortunantely, on my first day, I realized that one administrator had not cleared me, though the university had accepted placement, and this woman was not happy at my presence in her school. While she tried to cover it up with fake smiles, I picked up on it.

I discovered a couple of days later she did not give me passes I needed to have, nor did she ask me for certain things required to do the internship, which should have been clue #1. She did not intend for me to stay.

In the time I was there, it was for me to really learn, but to keep me busy with filing, answer phones, and to stay away from the students. I was told "no one has ever broken pass our barrier but you, and we all have to think about job security". I was told not to talk to students, parents or teachers. I was never told WHY. At the college fair, I was given an out of the way table to man.

The reason I share this experience, is because in the short time that I was in this situation, I discovered a lot. I saw that the problem was not with the counselors as many thought, it was with this woman. All of the counselors were very well trained, and had a lot of work to produce, none which was really for students. The teachers had experience well beyond a bachelor degree, and offered many interesting experiences.

The next thing that I learned was that my previous classes had described the issues correctly , and counselors just do not have the time to work with students as they should, so they have to pass off the work to others. In most cases, it is a peer-to -peer group. In this situation, the counselors were expected to put in 15 hour days, 5 days a week.

Well that is a good idea, but what does a student who has never been to college tell another student in the selection of a school that is "right" for them?

In this school, all the counselors were "hands on", but this had a pay off too. These counselors lived 10-15 miles away. They arrived at the school by 7am each morning. They left most of the nights at 10pm (which I felt was too long a work day, and 5 days a week).. The thing that ran through my mind was "how does this benefit the students, if the people in charge are mentally asleep". The teachers were eating breakfast in class, while counselors were trying to wake up in their offices. I had never seen anything like this when I was in school.

Once I got to sit in on a counselor/student session. They last about a total of five (5) minutes, and is used as a way for the counselor to get the paper work done that they need to, but not a real assistance to the student. I asked to see the paperwork used, and then I questioned the student on some of the things they wrote down. They decided to change their mind, and the counselors agreed that I was correct, but they do not have in the selection of schools, the schools come in, market to the students, and then it is up to the kids.

I asked one counselor..

"What is the worse part of your job?"
Answer: The Parents! Wow, I thought.. I embrace them. they need help too in this process.

I then asked a few more questions:

1) Why do you broadcast to parents not to hire a college consultant when the school can't do what a consultant can do?
Answer: We send all the information out via an email and it was up to the students and parents to get the information.

2) If something happens to an email or a family misses it?
Answer: Oh well, was the reply.

3) Why don't you endorse a college consultant if a child or family needs more time to understand the process?
Answer: We are not interested in sending out our students, we want to keep them all here,

For me, that was not acceptable. Families should be able to make informed decisions. The is an important step for every high school student and their families, and the school was treating it like just one more kid.

Students were snapped at constantly, and one little girl came in using all the courage she could to ask a simple question, and she was told " the counselors are busy and they don't have time for you now.. you have to come back"-- I was right there.. I ran after her and asked her what it was that she wanted. it was a simple request, and I was able to take care of it then and there.

I offered to help one student on a one-on-one basis who had no computer at home. He had no clue how to navigate one of the one line college systems to do a college application. I spent about an hour with him one morning, and told that that is not how to do it. they give out the information and it is up to the students or parents to get it.

One mother asked how to get her 10th daughter into college, that the counselor told her to just go to the local community college. I was not allowed to say anything, but there are a lot of options, the local community college is just one option.

I shared my experience with my class and professor. The professor told
me to ignore most of it as it was a big political move, and while
unfortunate,

It was mind boggling. What do students or parents do who need a little more help? The other day I got a call from a single mother who had gotten her child into college, but needed help with financial aid... "I listened to her story, but had to tell her "its too late to help you. but I can do it for next year".

Many High School counselors and teachers who have the everyday "normal" child to work with have sharp sharp tongues, and they really do not stop to consider the impact of those actions or words on others. They believe they have to be blunt and very frank to make their point heard. In this matter of Akian Chaifetz, it was like he was not even a person.

There are those who work with "special needs" students, those with ADD, ADHD, Asperger's, Autism, and physical issues. Most of these teachers, aides and others who work with these students are very special in their own right, and this story is about a few. Unfortunately, there are a few who are on the "frank and blunt" side of things and have specifics on how to deal with situations not taking into account their impact. Parents never know, and kids because of their limited abilities to express themselves on an articulate level, hope to maybe convey what they want to say, but most of the time, suffer with it. I know I had to deal with a situation I could not understand, and when I finally got it, it was too late to correct the damage done. I had to modify my approach to create the successful outcome.

The sad part of all of this is that the end result the parents feel or are told that their child not going to be able to go off to a college and university and they should consider other options. This is a "MYTH" and totally unfounded. There are colleges and universities across America where students with learning differences can do, and do quiet well too.

Parents lose out on financial aid opportunities cause they "just did not know" and those with special needs have to forgo a college or a university education if their parents are not pro active because they think there is nothing else they can do, and nothing can be farther from the truth.

Today. in the Huttington Post, this story came up about a young child with special needs and learning differences. He is not dumb or retarded, he just processes the information a little differently than others. Routinely, this is a quiet child, but in the classroom his teachers advocate him as "violent, a disruption, and out of control".

What caught my eye was his father's reply, Akian Chaifetz' father wired him to an audio system before school so he could listen in on a day's activities so he could listen in as to what was going on in the classroom, and he was shocked in what he heard.

I commend this father, but I did something similar once to get to the bottom of an issue. I was glad that he did it.

Children need to be treated with respect, and to be listened to. Children are human and need to be treated as such. I find in my own practice today, that many issues can resolved with active listening. As a result, I want to share this story, because while this is a young students' issue, it goes on in all grades in different fashions. Students and parents need help when applying to college, and while the counselors want to "protect their jobs", it can be damaging to all students, including those with learning issues, and the school personnel should embrace all the wonderful resources available to families instead of telling families they are the be all, end all of school.

When I talk to students, many have a preconceived idea what a student applying to college should and should not be..... and then not really clear at all. I always tell students to be themselves... but that is sometimes hard to do when there is so much resting on their essays.

I just read the story of "Dear Customer", published in the Huffington Post. I am sure that while this boy to whom this article is directed may think it was no big deal, the story is amazing in his own right. This is an event that if this child should consider think about when he puts his pen to paper.

This story is not only about the disrespect of the father who has his own ideas, but to the character of both boys in the story. Something so simple but at the same time so great, is something that colleges do look for when looking at incomimg students.

I am sure that the author of this story hopes to connect with these boys and let them know what she tought. While this is a sweet and touching story, for all of us to read, it is a story that high school students should embrace when thinking about what to write.

When we work with students, we like to have them do as much outside the classroom as in it... as schools DO look at things like this.

Colleges and Universities across America offer programs to high school students as a way to prepare them for what is ahead of them.

The UCLA/RIORDAN SCHOLARS PROGRAM is seeking applicants from any school whose members are in the class of 2014 (Sophomores)and the class of 2015 (Freshmen)
for its "Leadership and Career Development" program starting in
September, 2012.

The costs for this Saturday program are quite minimal
and the program opportunities and networks are well worth the students'
time.

Applications are due by June 1 2012.

Summer is fast approaching and as seniors are preparing for the proms and graduation from high school, community college students are looking at their future goals and ambitions, and college graduates may be looking to the next step.

With the budget cuts happening all over the state of California, as well as in other states, the worry that students have now appears to be escalating as we are getting several calls each day on how we can help the families of students who are applying to or have just been accepted into colleges.

The key to the process is PLANING! We can not stress this enough. It is important to start ahead. When you wait till the last minute, mistakes happen. We just received a call from a hysterical father explaining that the financial aid award must be wrong that he just received.( It probably is not-- he just made errors in the app) He wants to know now how his son is going to survive his freshman year.Je wamts to hire us to FIX it. I can feel his pain, but he is not leaving any room for errors, an errors happen. I can't fix it and I am not going to take his hard earned dollars to just take it.

While we have a couple of tricks up our selves to help us perhaps assist him, we have no guarantees. Once you cross the threshold of submitting the material, you are kind of at the mercy of others. The most probable outcome is that there is almost nothing we can do at this point-- but we know that they way they calculated the FAFSA is probably where the mistake happened, and it is in those errs that the sumes are calculated. This family waited too long.

High School and Community College Counselors are very well trained but they are so busy with the volume of students they have to attend to that with all that they have to do that they don't always have enough time to assist those who really need help. Consequently, the student then falls through the cracks believing that they have to follow a prescribed program when in fact there may be better options for them to deal with their goals and for less money.

Another boy who has been accepted to the college of his choice is just learning the financial aid forms may have been filled out wrong. His family may have to pay the full tuition, when in fact on the surface of it all they really qualify for full aid. It is too late for us to change things, but had we worked with them earlier, we could have gotten a better outcome on things. We have to wait for next year now.

A girl is still in the local Community College and is of the belief that she has to graduate from the college in order to transfer to a 4 year school.... and is at her breaking point. She would love a BA, but thinks she needs to quit to go to work. She is now willing to settle for far less because she has not been properly guided. She has spent 4 years in a community college, and now is about 2-3 years behind her peers.

Worse I meet two boys who have an impressive list of schools to apply to in the fall, but they dont have SAT or ACT scores, and if they mess up on the last try.. they might lost their chance to get into the school.. It is these mistakes that can cost a student and their family.

These are all true stories, and we hear the same things EVERY year Most people when we tell them what we do, don't feel it is important to work with someone at the time, and feel that they can do it. However, this is a myth, unless the studentis overly bright. It is when the college says NO, or some other <strike>catastrophy</strike> happens that they find us, and then need us to fix the mess. There is no fixing it, it is just about starting over on the right step.

High School and Community College Counselors are well trained, but that training is often over taken by heavy work loads they can not keep up with through no fault of their own. With heavy budget cuts and demand of their time, they are not allowed to keep up with the newest developments by attending national events, so they are completely out of touch with what new approaches the colleges will be taking for the coming year.

It is heartbreaking to see people at this point realize Mistake # 1 has been made, and now it is going to cost "x" # of thousands of dollars.... and then we hear, "should of, would of, could of" and it is just too late!

As many states have had to re-evaluate their budgets, so has
California
taking one of the hardest hits in the country. Over the past decade,
tuition in the state overall has seen an increase of 300 %, with tuition doubling
over the past five years, to $13,000 for resident undergraduates at UC schools
(and private school rates for those out of state); $6,400 at California
State University schools, and Community College fees are to $46 per unit by
this summer, up from $20 per unit in 2007. (Keep in mind that these
numbers do not include room and board, books, fees, etc).

As the world already knows, California Universities are excellent with all 9
undergraduate campuses at the University of California, Stanford, USC, The
Claremont Colleges, and others scoring in the top 100 every year by US
News. Demand to come to one of these schools each year is world wide; with a 1
in 13 chance of getting into a UC.

Subsequently, high school students today in the state of California are looking to colleges and
universities across the country in fear of not being able to get into their own
state schools. This thought is now putting pressure on students in other states
to elevate their standards because of the shear number of California
Students looking to attend college. In addition, all admissions
recruiters know what the state of affairs in California is, and they want part of the
action. For the past few years California
has been large target on their radar, and subsequently, they are visiting the
state intensely each year to recruit for their school. Most schools will tell
you they have had an increase of 15%- 20% in applications.

Looking at school choices is now putting a greater demand on all students
across the country now. Those who thought they had an easier chance of getting
into their own state's colleges and universities are now finding the demand is
going global with New York and California students
pushing to other states.

In addition, many schools are trying to recruit
international students. In some cases, while some students think that the
reasons they did not get accepted to a certain school is due to racial
profiling or other socio-economic reasons; the true reason for them
not getting into the schools of their #1 choice is that the admissions officers
had their work cut out for them in carving out a new incoming class and that
some students assumed that just because they have high graders or strong
SAT/ACT scores that it is enough to get accepted, failing to understand that they had to do a
lot of creative thought to stand out from the rest of the country or world.

Since January 2012, everything has gone up -- Cable, Phone, Utilities, Food,
Gas, etc--- now, so is tuition in California. These tuition hikes are forcing all the
public colleges and universities across the board in California to raise not only tuition, but to
reduce class size and dismiss classes once needed by some students.

It is easy to see why California Students in colleges and
universities today have to worry. In the UCs, a 4-year long education is now
taking up to 6 years to now complete, and many students hope they can cope with
the luxury of staying in school that long. As I tour the UC campuses
periodically I hear this comment often.

Today, tuition hikes in California are raised on average at
least once a year with the public College and University levels sometimes being
increased as much as twice in just a year.

The protest you see today is because students worried on how they are going to
cope, and so their fight to get an education has begun. At the University of California,
Santa Cruz, last
week, the campus had been shut down by students in protest.
Students who have part time jobs to make ends meet face salaries being cut and
cost of going to school going up is creating a major gap between the two and they
are frustrated.

For those in High School or Community Colleges looking to transfer, note that
this is where a good college admissions consultant comes into play, they have
the resources to point students toward success being able to help them with
financial aid.

Here at The College Admissions Consultant, we are able to
work with families to assist them not only in getting in, but staying in.

be applying to colleges and universities in Fall 2012 should note.

Each year, more and more colleges and universities
are adjusting their campuses to accommodate students with a diverse array of needs. Unfortunately, students with learning or physical disabilities may have to do a
little bit more research and browsing before finding the college that
best suits their individual needs.

One question that we constantly are asked is, How do students with disabilites find the right school for them?

As we tell all students, Be your own advocate anduse the your difference in a positive way to separate yourself from the rest.

It seems like those students who are "angular" have a distinct
advantage in the college application process, especially amongst highly
selective and elite institutions. Athletes, males, females, musicians,
leaders, minorities, international students, US students living abroad all have a little advantage depending upon the "current" needs of
the specific college or university, which is why a student's research on colleges is so important.

Students with learning or physical differences
should regard themselves in this category, because they, too, will
bring a slightly different perspective to the academic table as well as
to the formation of a community. These students have so much to teach your
peers about character, perseverance, flexibility, and patience, and so it is important for these students to evaluate themselves from a positive light, advocate themselves as the glass half
full, not half empty.

Secondly, when a students with these issues fall into and finds
the right college fit, they will be expected to do all the same work as their counterparts in addition to the extra category of
accommodations. Not every campus will address these needs as well as
others. All campuses across America are required today by federal mandates to do so, but most will only do the minimal required to meed the state and federal requirements imposed on them. If you are in need of more assistance, they much more work is required to find the right school. One place to start your research is to locate the campuses which will excel in addressing the needs of
students with either the learning or physical differences, like your counterparts, visiting the campuses will be very important. Students should try to arrange an overnight stay (preferably with a student who shares
your differences), and then shadow that student in a "typical day." on that campus.

Here is a link where you might start the process.-- http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges If you feel overwhelmed, contact our office as we work with students who face these issues, and a trained consultant can make your journey of finding the right school a little less stressful.
After months of worry, college acceptances are going to be soon arriving in mail boxes. Some will say "accepted", some will say "rejected" and some might say "wait listed". If you are accepted to at least one of your top three choices, you don't have a lot to worry about. If you are rejected from schools in your top three, you might want to consider an appeal, and if you are wait listed, you should try to see what you to get into the school in the fall.

Seniors are tired about now, "senioritis" is setting im after all the application stress, as are their families, and to just get that letter of acceptance is such a relief. Don't let your hair down just yet though... we know applying to and getting to college can be a challenge for many students, you need to see it through till you graduate. We know you are excited about what you future holds and you want to take a break.

But wait, there is the financial aid issues that are now going to have to be addresses, and those award letters will be coming as well if you filled your FAFSA and remember your verification by March 2, 2012 ( just make sure you get a proof of mailing or send it certified mail so you have proof of mailing it).

As these letters begin to arrive, so will the college admission and financial aid phone or mail scams running around. The process of
getting to your chosen college just gotten a little trickier. Whether you choose a
typical brick-and-mortar school or "For Profit schools" * ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_for-profit_universities_and_colleges ) the risk of getting caught up in these scams is just as high.

In order to protect yourself from such things, it’s
important to arm yourself with information. To help you, here are some
of the most common college admissions scams to look out for.

College Application Fee Scam

This is one of the most popular college application scams. . Students are asked to pay a processing
fee on their college application. The truth is it’s rare for colleges
and universities to request for any processing fee over the phone since
all fees are already declared on their application form. Students are either required to visit the school for payments or send
the money directly to the school admission council.

Financial Aid Scam

Both online and offline, there’s no shortage of scams related to financial aid ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Student_financial_aid_in_the_United_States)
These scams entice students with their lucrative offer with several
financial benefits that will solve all their school-related financial
worries. Here the catch is - students must first pay some fees
before you get the aid, or they are sent a letter with a code and number to call. Stay away from this offer at all times, and report these scams to either the US post master or your local police dept)

College Scholarship Scam

Just like what mentioned above, offers of lucrative or free
college scholarships that are too good to be true are most likely
scams. One of their "modus operandi" is to call up students and say that
they won scholarship from some organization. If you’ve never heard or
applied in that organization, don’t deal with them because they’re most
likely a scam. If you do talk to them, get their name, the organization, the address, and call back number -- they might hang up on you. Beware as they may try to call a second or third time

College Application Redemption Fee Scam

A college application redemption fee ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_fund_fees_and_expenses) is another phone scam that students should be aware of. These scammers
sometimes quote legit information to convince you they are from the college and then ask for a
processing fee when you decide to avail of it. Keep in mind that schools
usually release their usual application fees outright for the student’s
benefit. When you ask questions, you will see that they break down.

* We do want to make a comment about for profit schools. I have nothing against them, however, you need to be VERY VERY careful before you sign on, We get a lot of horror stories once the student signs on and is in the program.

1. If the school goes belly up, and it does happen, you are not only out of pocket the money, but there is no paper to go with it either.

2. These schools have "admissions directors", but they are really "sales people". They are not apart of any educational organization, they have no training, and they make promises long enough to get you into the school.

3. These schools will have you fill out financial aid papers like a regular school, and then you find that a parent or other person must CO SIGN...... this should be a BIG RED FLAG. The only person who signs legitimate financial aid papers is the school and the student.. there is no co-signers, unless your parents are taking a loan to cover their contribution share.

4. For profit schools can be more expensive that a 4 year private school, and the degree is on a 4th tier level. You never make enough to compensate yourself on these plans.

SENIORS, COLLEGE TRANSFERS, and THOSE LOOKING TO VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS... get a college consultant to assist you. We are trained. We know the scams and programs, we visit the schools, and while we all have fees, they are a lot less and can save you thousands of dollars in financial mistakes.

"In the 2003 matter of Grutter v. Bollinger, the United States Supreme
Court held that colleges and universities could consider race and
ethnicity in their admissions decisions. . However, the court on recently moved from that previous position which could ultimately reverse that decision —
ending race-based affirmative action policies at Yale and other higher
education institutions across the country." reports the Yale Times

Last Tuesday, February 21, 2912, the Supreme Court announce that it would hear Fisher v. University of Texas — a case filed by a
white student, Abigail Fisher, who said she was denied admission to the
University of Texas’s Austin campus because of her race.

Since the ruling on
Grutter v. Bollinger ruling in 2003, education experts said the argument over
affirmative action policies at colleges and universities has calmed, but
news of the court’s decision to hear another affirmative action case
has reignited debate between supporters and opponents of the policy.

Many Student who feel that they can not get funds for school because their families make too much money, or at least the government feels they make too much money, should look into EACH school that they are are applying to.

Sometimes within the department where a student is applying to their are scholarships available or within alumni/ae groups and individual alumus cab make some significant donations because they have made far more than they can ever spend and they have the need to give back---------- or perhaps they want to make a bet!

Several years ago, George Lucas, maker of some amazing pictures, and Steven Spielberg . an owner of "Dream Works Pictures" made a met. The loser was to buy the winner'scollege a building -- USC or Cal State Long Beach. Lucas won, so today when you visit USC, you will see the Spielberg School of Television and Film.

This past month, there have been some significant donations. to some of the larger schools, and so we would like to share these stories so seniors who are looking for additional funds to pay for college might have a new place to explore.

Here are some stories about major donations where students should look for scholarships:

Student organizations receive vital financial support from
alumni/ae and private contributors as well as corporate donations
each year.

whether they can afford it or not.'

One of the most misunderstood philosophies that produce anxiety ridden fear in many parents is the thinking they completely understand the SAT or ACT testing process; assuming that their children are smart and therefore will do well on standardized tests. While many students do well, and indeed do so without assistance, the truth is that even the most brilliant students might not have the ability to "crack the SAT code" The test has been designed it appears to trip up kids with their way of designing the questions.

We recommend that you introduce a few sample tests early on to your son or daughter.
Let them become detectives and figure out the way questions are
formatted, the rhythm of the test, etc.... Rather than memorize 500 new
vocabulary words, for instance, they would be much better off simply
taking practice tests at home.

When we work with students, we work to put them in SAT or ACT prep programs that will not only work with their pocketbooks, but with the needs of the student.

We are offering a FREE 1/2 hour session to you and your family to allow us a chance to show you how we can help your family navigate the college admissions process, find the schools that fit your situation and goals, along with financial aid.

Our fees are within the industry norm, and a fraction of what the costs of mistakes will cost you.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT TAKING AP TESTS

When
we begin working with new students on their testing plan and strategy,
they are often surprised that AP tests are included; they mistakenly
think that AP tests are for college credit only. Actually, AP scores
have become important for the purpose of college admission. Not only
does taking an AP-level course show colleges that you have taken a
challenging course load. By earning scores of 3 or better on the AP’s 1-5 scale on enough exams
you earn not only the distinction of an AP Scholar, but it can also assist you when applying for scholarships.. To get more information about this, you can visit http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/scholarawards.html.

If you are at a school that does not offer AP
classes, any high school can order AP tests for students. Y ou must be pro-active and ask your couselors ahead of time. All schools must order the exams by
March, so if you are in one of these schools without a program, plan on applying in January or February.

If for some reason your school refuses to order a test for you,
you can take AP tests at a neighboring public high school as long
as you order them ahead of time. Remember that colleges only see AP
tests from the junior year or dates before since the results come back in July
and the tests are only offered in May. That means you want to front-load
AP tests, taking as many as you can prior to senior year.

Finally, in addition to proving your
rigor of course load and giving you a nice honor to add to your Common
Application, performing well on AP tests in a specific academic area can
back up your honed academic focus. For example, if you want to present
yourself as a budding psychologist on your applications, taking AP
Statistics and AP Psychology would certainly help to back up that
interest.

An article last year in USA Today
noted that AP scores of students from around the country are dropping.
Despite the fact that students are taking nearly three times as many AP
exams as they used to (from 1.1 million in 1999 to 2.9 million in 2009),
the failure rate (students scoring a 1 or 2) has risen by over 5% in
the same time period.

Nearly half of all students in the United
States who take the AP exam are failing – therefore, nearly half of all
students in the United States are not gaining even the most elementary
level of knowledge necessary to compete at the university level and
beyond. This gives you an opportunity to be in the other half of
students to show your level of expertise along with rigor of course
load.

What’s the average AP score at your high
school for specific tests? Find out. Read your high school profile,
which is sent with your transcript to colleges when you apply. If you
don’t think your AP class is preparing you for the AP test or your
school doesn’t even offer AP classes, take matters into your own hands
and self-study for the tests. There are plenty of resources available to
do so. MIT OpenCourseWare, for instance, offers free online classes in
physics, biology and chemistry. (http://ocw.mit.edu/high-school/for-students/).

If you live in California, UC College Prep offers free self-study AP courses:

http://www.uccp.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=56&Itemid=78

Kahn Academy offers no cost AP test prep videos in courses such as Calculus, Biology and Physics. There are AP test prep books galore as well as AP textbooks corresponding to AP classes.

When more and more students are
performing poorly on their AP exams, your strong AP scores will help you
stand out. The earlier you start preparing for your AP exams and using
all of the tools available to you, the more likely it is that your
scores will improve the quality of your application.

Some interesting facts about AP Tests:

As of this year, guessing is encouraged
if you are unsure of an answer. The quarter-point penalty for a wrong
answer has been eliminated, so experts are advising students to play the
odds.

Foreign language AP exams are often
broken up into a "language" test and a "literature" test. The former
tests knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, the latter tests
understanding of literary texts (such as Don Quixote for
Spanish Literature). The literature tests are considered more difficult
and somewhat less common but don’t shy away from them.

  Some exams have different levels:
Calculus BC is higher than Calculus AB; Computer Science AB is higher
than Computer Science A; Physics C is higher than Physics B. If you take
the higher level AP, the lower level will usually not count for any
additional credit in colleges although you may gain additional grounds
for AP award eligibility.

  AP Exam Dates: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/cal/cal2.html

You can suppress a low AP test so there
is NO risk to taking one you are unsure of. In fact, this past year many

Today, there is an article on the high number of student applications that have been submitted to colleges and universities across America written by a collegian reporter, Marie Jayme. She is talking about the "college" graduation class of 2016, which is today's high school seniors.

It is interesting on what she has found out... it goes along with the numbers we are also getting from our own sources... "Colleges and Universities across America are receiving admissions applications in record breaking numbers, making it more difficult to get it."

This is where a well trained college admissions consultant can come into play. They are able to relieve the stress of high school juniors and seniors as well as their families by showing them specific ways to navigate the system to their own specific needs.

Here is the article, you be the judge~ ~ ~

The University of Richmond’s Office of Undergraduate Admission has
received 10,121 applications for entry into the Class of 2016.

Gil Villanueva, dean of admission, said that the number of students
who applied for admission this year was the highest number of applicants
in the school’s history. These numbers represent a 50 percent increase
in applicants since 2007 and a 28 percent increase within the last three
years, Villanueva said.

The admissions office is looking to enroll 765 students for the Class
of 2016. With 10,121 applicants, this means 13 high school students are
competing for one space in the class.

Villanueva said the school had enrolled 270 new students from the
fall early-decision pool, and they were reviewing the winter
early-decision applications.

A number of factors attract prospective students to Richmond, Villanueva said.

The school’s rising national rankings, its inclusion as a “Best
Value” school by guidebooks and magazines and generous financial aid
policies appeal to students and families.

Villanueva also attributes the increased number of applications to
curricular offerings, the hiring of more faculty and staff, the growth
of the university’s endowment and the addition of $70 million worth of
new buildings.

There is data to suggest that academic excellence and prestige brings
people to the school, Villanueva said. Last year, 89 percent of
Richmond students who applied to law schools were accepted, he said. In
addition, 81 percent of students who applied to medical school were
accepted, where as the national average for acceptance is 47 percent.

In addition, Villanueva personally thinks that success in athletics
and other extracurricular activities, such as the men’s basketball
team’s journey to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament last year,
contributes to the growth in application numbers as well. Smart students
are interested in immersing themselves in a fun and vibrant community,
Villanueva said.

Despite this shocking rise in applications, the requirements for admission have not been lowered.

“What’s interesting is how the academic quality and demographic
composition of the applicant pool has grown along with the increase of
applications,” Villanueva said. He said that with each new class come
more talented and diverse students who recognize the university as a
match for their academic and co-curricular interests.

Villanueva said that it was interesting that the retention rates have
increased while the classes have become more diverse. There are more
first generation college students, more low income students, and 20
percent of students are of color. Currently, Richmond’s retention rate
is 93 percent and the intersection of academic quality and diversity
affects this high retention rate, Villanueva said.

The admissions representatives have worked hard to visit many
different places to get University of Richmond’s name out and to
contribute to the increase of applications.

Villanueva said representatives have been all across the country and
even across the world except for the Middle East, where they hope to
visit this Spring. The Office of Admission has also formed strategic
partnerships with various departments on and off-campus to represent the
school’s value proposition including the offices of Enrollment
Management and University Communications, said Villanueva.

It is not just the admission representatives who market the school,
but also those who have a personal connection to the university such as
students, faculty, and alumni. The facts and statistics about Richmond
are on the Internet, so what most visitors are interested in are what
makes Richmond amazing on a personal level, said Villanueva. The
individual stories, everyday experiences, and first-hand knowledge of
the school are great marketing tools.

Evan Lund, 16, and Joseph Norris, 16, are both juniors at Walt
Whitman High School in Bethesda, M.D. They said that while their parents
were the driving force that got them to visit the school, the dining
hall and architecture was intriguing. Norris’ mother said that she knew
the University of Richmond has a good reputation. She also mentioned
that James Narduzzi, Dean of the School of Professional and Continuing
Studies, told her more about the school that impressed her and her son.

Taylor Durland, a Student Admission Representative, said that the
tour groups have been getting increasingly larger since the first time
gave a tour in January 2010. Joey Greener, another student
representative, agrees. He said the groups used to comprise three or
four families and now the number of visitors is up to five to eight
families per group. In 2010, around 21,000 visitors went through the
admissions office and this past year, 24,000 visitors have seen the
campus and attended information sessions, said Villanueva.

“Richmond is the best of both worlds; a small school community with
big school experiences,” said Greener. He said that prospective students
decide to visit because they recognize that they can’t get these
advantages at other places.

There is some confusion from students and their families who had their applications "deferred" in the early round and unclear about what
to do going forward. If you are a senior with this problem here is a deferral plan we on how to appraoch these issues
beginning in December when students hear from early admissions colleges and universities.

If you have been deferred from your early
school, take a deep breath and take action as you must be proactive. If
you simply do nothing, chances are you will not get in.

Here is a plan of action you can take.:

January

  Focus
on your grades! The biggest reason for a deferral is mediocre grades
senior fall – cut out your extras and focus on GRADES. All A’s will
help.

Retake the SAT or SAT Subject Tests on
January 28th if that was a problem area (you can always go standby if
you’ve not yet registered). If you don’t do better, just don’t send the
new scores and no one will see them. If you do better, RUSH them to all
your schools.

Are there any awards or competitions awards or competitions you can enter or have won and not yet reported to the college? Any concrete accomplishment will be brought up down the line.

Have you followed up with any professors at the college that you had spoken to? Let them know your plight and enlist their help.

Call (or email) the admissions office a
few days after you receive the deferral letter and speak with your
admissions officer – the person who covers your area or who you
interviewed with or if you are a minority student, the minority
representative. Tell him or her how disappointed you are, how much you
like the school, and ask what else you can do. LISTEN to any clues he or
she might give you in the conversation. It’s important YOU make this
call NOT your parents. We had one student discover that by not
visiting her early school she was at a disadvantage. She immediately
made plans to visit.

Ask your guidance counselor to call both
to support you, and to find out anything about WHY – any missing items?
Tough year? Huge rise in applicants? School support is critical.

Ask a senior year teacher to write you a letter of support.

If you happen to know the headmaster/principal of your current school well, you can ask him/her to call or write on your behalf.

February

By the last week in February, you want to write a “deferral letter” stressing the following info:

Anything NEW -- grades, scores, awards, prizes, etc... -- Since my deferral, I ... (Don’t waste space with insignificant achievements as that would only weaken your case.)

Have your school send your updated transcript including all new grades.

Any interesting extracurricular additions, achievements, etc...

Anything else that is interesting you didn't mention elsewhere.

An impassioned paragraph on WHY the
school is still your first choice - summarize and stress WHAT YOU WOULD
ADD to the college campus.

Don’t forget to use the heading you used on all of your essays which includes your DOB, Name, High School and last 4 digits of your SS # (ie: xxx-xx-1234).

March

In
early March, CALL again and speak to your regional admissions officer to
touch base, ask if he/she got the letter, stress how it’s your first
choice, and mention a few notable accomplishments (I pulled my grades up
to all A’s and had the best quarter of my high school career…). You can
email if they do not accept calls.

Some final advice:

If you have any strings to pull, now is the time to pull them.

While we want you to advocate for yourself, don’t become a pest. You don’t want to stalk the admission office.

Don’t let this deferral erode your
confidence. Keep focused and remember that the odds these past few
years have been at all time lows and you stood out enough not to be
rejected.

If you are looking for financial aid, this is your chance to qualify for need-based loans and grants. While we encourage families to start entertaining financial aid questions early on, the FAFSA is the start of the whole process and all colleges and universities will require it.

The FAFSA is a form to be completed by the family and it is renewable every year. Everyone should apply, even if your family makes $400,000 per year. You may be eligible for some type of aid.

Here are a few things to remember about filing:

FAFSA stands for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. This means that it is FREE to file. You can access the forms by heading to the following website: www.fafsa.gov

The deadline to file is February 15th. For the best possible
financial aid package, filing by this date is highly recommended. It is done on a first come basis, and it must be filled out correctly or it will be kicked back to you.

You will need to obtain the school codes in order to file.

You must be accepted into school before the college or university can award your financial aid.

As
always, if you have any questions about the application process or the
FAFSA filing process, please don't hesitate to contact us. We are
looking forward to hearing from you!
