We haven't really shared much about our cut flower farm but it is time for that to change! We are honored to be able to provide our customers with many locally grown flowers!

The owner of A Country Rose, Annette started farming on an acre at her home in Wakulla County about eight years ago. She has since moved herself and her farm to a new location with more space for growth (pun intended).

Annette and her husband Ed are the ones who make all the magic happen. The most current tasks around the farm as of the last couple of weeks is a reworking of all the beds. They've been pulling up all the irrigation, laying new rows which includes 100's of tractor loads of compost and mulch then re-laying of black ground cover (to keep weeds at bay), white ground cover (to keep the black from burning the flowers) and then replacement of the irrigation. It's a lot of work but the results will be amazing and below is a sneak peek of what we are harvesting right now.

Of course what we can grow is dependent on the season and plant tolerance of our region so we still supplement with other wholesalers. In addition, Annette works to use sustainable and organic practices leaving as little carbon foot print as possible.

We all get so excited when full, colorful buckets of our flowers are delivered to the shop and we get to start creating arrangements and wedding designs with them.

What is a real local Florist? A real florist is one that has a brick and mortar shop in a certain town. This florist will have coolers, vans, and caring staff, with a fresh stock of flowers, plants, and gifts.

What is an order gatherer? An order gatherer is like a broker service who collects orders from the customers and then contacts the real local shop to fill these orders.

Order gatherers use advertising to entice consumers. Here is an example ad for Tallahassee Florida. This came up when I searched "Tallahassee Florist".

This is one of many google ads targeting our city, not only ours but every city

I searched. So what does this mean? Let's break this down. If you read the heading

it says Tallahassee #1 Florist. Are they located in Tallahassee? NO! So are they

Tallahassee's #1 Florist? NO! Let's go down a little further, the next line says shop

local. Well, we know that they are not local. That is three lies just to start.

When you click on the ad it takes you to this page. Notice in the top right-hand

corner, there is a BBB accreditation? I checked out BBB

accreditation and this is what I found:

This Business is not BBB accredited.

"BBB files indicate that this business has a pattern of complaints concerning.... Consumer complaints allege advertising issues. Complaints allege business provides misrepresentation of floral arrangements being purchased.

And they also have a F rating, and from consumers less than 2 stars.

Now let us look at the flowers on this website. The pictures are stock images from

Teleflora. They are photoshopped and are not real. This is just one of the reasons

when you read so many reviews from these types of companies,

consumers are unhappy about the arrangement because it does not look like

the picture. As a professional florist, I know for a fact that it is impossible to

replicate these photos in real life. Besides that, the price is also deceptive. These

order gatherers collect at least 30% more than what they give the filling shop. One

customer informed us that one order gatherer was charging him $100 and they

were "trying" to give us 60.00 to fill his order, which we refused and he called us

directly. This is commonplace and we see this time and again.

Our shop is not affiliated with any of the top wire services. This is one reason

when you visit our website, you will find mostly product photos of our own

arrangements that our designers have created.

More and more flower shops across the country are doing this as well.

To our customers, we offer a cost-effective service for you to send flowers and

you can be assured that you will receive flowers filled to order. If you

are looking to send flowers to another city, your best bet is to send through your

local florist, or if you want to search online for a real local shop here is what I

suggest. In your search bar put City/florist, like Tallahassee Florist. The first thing

you will see is mostly ads. In some cities, that is all you will see. You may

scroll down to see the google map or click on the map above the ads. Either way,

this will show you a real local florist in the city you are searching for. Find your

local florist and save money and save the florist.

If you are a florist reading this I hope you will take this information to heart and stop

filling these deceptive orders. The only way we can combat these order

gatherers is to stop filling their orders. Order gatherers are not honest businesses.

They deceive customers! They are not good for the floral industry! If we fill their

orders it will affect our integrity and hurt us all in the long run. Being

busy filling their orders doesn't help our bottom line or the customer.

Let us all band against order gatherers and put honesty and integrity back into our

wonderful flower industry. Remember that the emperor didn't have any clothes on.

Let's quit pretending that these gatherers and wire services are helping us.

Start taking pictures of your product and place them on your website. Show your

customers your diversity and creativity and see what happens. You will find

fewer complaints and more profit.

Lizzy and Cole had a beautiful wedding at Goodwood in Tallahassee, Florida and it is was all captured by the talented Amber Brogdon Photography.

Goodwood gives any wedding a backdrop of southern charm from the large column porches to the spanish moss large oak tree.

Flowers were all white and included scabiosa, roses, ranunculus and an abundance of eucalyptus.

We placed garland down the center of the head table and Kate with a piece of cake used her clear candlesticks at intermittent spots throughout.

Same Day Flower Delivery Cost | Tallahassee Florida

This article is about delivery charges. Why florists charge what they charge and how that compares to other delivery services. Just in case you were wondering,

How many places do you know that offer same-day delivery? Pizza places? Food delivery services? When you googled same-day delivery, there is a crazy number of businesses that now offer same-day delivery. I was shocked even FedEx offers this service. Not sure the cost and they are limited to certain zip codes.

The FedEx rates from Tallahassee to Tallahassee. This calculation was for Shipping on Friday with delivery on Saturday. For delivery overnight by 10:00 the following morning the cost is 83.92. By 3:00 pm on Monday, the cost was 32. 34.

Delivery from Tallahassee to New York for the same time frame overnight by 9:30 was 126.56. Monday by 3:00 was 70.14.

Over the years of floral services in Tallahassee, we have had more than a few customers concerned about our delivery fee. Our base fee is 10.95 for same-day delivery. The farther away we go the more it cost the sender. I understand the concern. I like free shipping too. But really is anything "really" free? How much are you willing to pay for same-day delivery? Especially when you forgot a birthday or anniversary. How about overnight or same-day on Christmas eve? How about by 10:00 next-day? Or a two-hour window?

Now that we have compared the delivery cost of other services let's look at the cost for your local florist to deliver. The cost of doing business is always a concern for small business owners. Delivery vans cost of maintenance, cost of fuel, cost of the driver. If the delivery is within a few miles of the shop's location then the delivery fee should be lower. If it is far away then it will be higher.

Let's say we have a delivery to Crawfordville Florida. We only have one delivery there today so it is a trip there and back. It takes about 30 minutes one way. So there and back is one hour. You may pay your driver 12.00 an hour. The distance from the shop to downtown Crawfordville is about 20 miles. If your van gets 20 miles per gallon it will take two gallons so the cost will be about 7.00 in gas.
So 12+7= $19 now this doesn't include the cost of van, insurance, and wear and tear on the van. Can you tell me how much you would charge per delivery to Crawfordville?

If you own a flower shop I hope this will help you calculate how much to charge. If you are a customer looking to send flowers I hope this will help you understand why we charge what we charge.

Wedding Flowers Pebble Hill | Thomasville Georgia

Have you been to Pebble Hill in Thomasville Georgia? This is a beautiful location for your wedding. Filled with southern charm, plantation style. Our lovely bride's color pallet was burgundy, blush, and white. Her wedding site was The Sugar Hill Barn.

Her bouquet: flowers included tornado cremons, protea, white ohara garden roses, white roses, eucalyptus, and hanging amaranthus.

Bridesmaids bouquets: All white roses with an abundance of eucalyptus.

The weather that day was rainy so her planner Kate Pararo of A Piece A Cake Event Planning ordered a clear tent. This was an excellent choice, keeping the bride and her guest dry. The ceremony entrance was started off with barrels topped off with flowers including the same flowers of her bouquet. A cross at the front was adorned with a swag of fresh flowers that also matched her bouquet.

Inside the barn, the head table had white linens. We placed faux eucalyptus garlands down the center with flowers dispersed throughout and gold candlesticks. On the round tables, there were floating candle cylinder vases and gold compotes filled with flowers. The faux eucalyptus, gold candlesticks, compotes, and cylinder vase are rental items provided by A Country Rose.

Have you ever been disappointing when you send flowers? You expected one thing and got something that was totally different. This is one of the biggest complaints we hear. When it comes to buying flowers it can frustrate you to the point of never buying flowers again. Let me assure you, it does not have to be this way. I believe all flower shops want to meet their customers exceptions. Sometimes it is all in the communicating.

1. Shop local. Steer clear of using wire service company's like 1800flowers, FTD, From You Flowers etc. Avoid the ads at the top of the page these are what the flower industry call order gathers and their pricing can be very deceptive. Scroll down past the ads and you will local shops listed. When searching for a local flower shop, be sure to look for that local address on their home page. If it's not there, they are not local. The local shops will also show up on google maps.
2. If a picture on a website looks perfect with every flower in place. Buyer beware it has been photo shopped. You can order these, just be aware they may not look exactly as the picture. It is better to choose designers choice in this case. It gives the designer the ability to use the most seasonally best flowers available and to use his/her own creativeness.
3. Ask yourself do you want a long lasting bouquet? Do you want unusual flowers? Do you want big and showy? Short and compact? How about color? Do you all the same color? muted? bright? vibrant?

Have you ever wondered where your flowers come from? Cut flowers are shipped from all over the world. Ecuador, Columbia, Holland, and more.
Here at A Country Rose we receive our flowers from all of the above. However we are moving toward a more sustainable source for our flowers. Three years ago we started a small flower farm in Wakulla County and have been learning and experimenting a bunch. This is our first year of true production and we want to share with you what we have accomplished. We have certainty not arrived and all our flowers are not locally sourced, yet we are moving toward that model slowly.
Our farm is using organic style gardening practices, so all the flowers that we use are free from harsh chemicals. At this time we are growing, zinnias, cornflower, dianthus, sunflowers, celosia, coleus, yarrow, ageratum, hollyhocks, liatris, hydrangea, gladiolus, agastache, astilbe, snapdragons, queen anns lace, torch lilies, and eucalyptus. We are adding daily to our selection.

Pebble Hill Plantation

Pebble Hill Plantation incorporates the grandeur of an older time and the draw of rich history into your special day. The land, Purchased in 1825 by Thomas Jefferson Johnson started as a cotton plantation and later gained popularity as a hunting plantation. The beautiful house that currently stands on the grounds was constructed in 1936 by Cleveland architect Abram Garfield, commissioned by Kate Hanna Ireland. Upon Kate’s death, the property was passed to her daughter Elisabeth “Pansy” Ireland. It was Pansy that decided the land and stunning plantation home ought to become a museum, and in 1983 the Pebble Hill museum opened for all to enjoy. The art collections of both Kate and Pansy are currently displayed in the Main House. Additionally, Pebble Hill Museum contains vast collections of antique furniture, china, and equestrian paraphernalia as well as turn of the century carriages.

Only minutes outside of Tallahassee in Thomasville Georgia, Pebble Hill Plantation is ideal for wedding ceremonies and receptions as they provide a variety of different venue options. The size of your event will help determine which location that is best for you. Some areas lend themselves to intimate gatherings while others are more expansive and can accommodate much larger groups. Maclay Gardens

Alfred B Maclay Gardens State Park is another on our list of favorite places for weddings in Tallahassee. Located just north of I-10 on 319. Consider this location for you small to medium size wedding.

Alfred B Maclay and his wife Louise bought the north Florida land in 1923 to build a winter home. They named it Killearn after Maclay’s great-grandfather who was in Scotland. Maclay and his wife work together continually until his death and his wife continue the planting and grooming and opened the gardens to the public in 1946. In 1953 she donated 307 acres of their estate to include the gardens to Florida State Park Service. The State renamed the gardens in 1965 in honor of Alfred B. Maclay. The Park now covers 1,176 acres and in 2000 was included on the National Register of Historic Places.

The gardens consist of an abundance of azaleas and camellias, also dogwood, gardenia, ginger, jasmine, redbud and more. The peak season for blooming is January 1st through April 30th.

The most popular cermony site is the reflection pool. It has a breath taking view from the top of the of the pool down to Lake Hall.

There is also a small gardeners cottage. With several rooms and a kitchen.

Dorothy B Oven Park

Dorothy Oven Park was originally a part of the Lafayette Land Grand and was granted to General Marquis de Lafayette by the United States Congress in 1824. Mr Will J. Oven, Jr donated the property to the City of Tallahassee in 1985. The Park is situated on six acres and is home to beautiful majestic oak trees and is landscaped with azalea’s camellia’s palm trees and other garden variety flowering plants that are indicative of North Florida. The grounds are an excellent place for weddings and events. The Gazebo below is the main wedding ceremony site at the park.

Mission San Luis

A little history on San Luis gathered from Mission San Luis Website.

Mission San Luis was primary resident for the Apalachees from 1656-1704 and was the Spaniards' capital for miliatry, religious and administrative functions. The misson became a historial landmark in 1960 and today it is the only reconstructed Spamish mission in Florida.

Mission San Luis' banquet hall is 4000 sqaure feet and will accommodate 250 seated guest. The out door courtyard is 3,000 square feet and is an excellent wedding site.

The Goodwood House

Goodwood located under majestic oaks this venue has awesome southern charm. With several wedding sites across the grounds and and the beautiful carriage house for the reception.

For a little history: Goodwood Museum and Gardens was started in 1830's where the owners grew corn and cotton. The grounds at that time consisted of 2400 acres. The plantation suffered decline after the civil war and by 1880 there was only 160 acres, which became an elegant private residence.

Goodwood has now been restored to the turn-of-the-century country estate era.

Building 209 was built by the Key family and housed their Coca-Cola bottling plant. It’s been a sporting goods store, an antique shop, it housed a trucking company and stored lots of stuff, including a sailboat. Haile and Ben McCollum bought the building in 2007 and re-imagined it as urban office space, event space and a creative space. It also is home to the Thomasville Saturday Market and an urban garden created in conjunction with Thomasville University.

Building 209 in Thomasville Geogia was the location of our vintage wedding. We used our vintage china plates in shades of blue. Also our goblets and gold flatware. The florals we use were soft shades of ivory white and pinks.

Outside Wedding Flowers~ The Retreat at Bradley's Pond

A June 20th wedding in North Florida and outside? Yes you can. It was hot for sure however at The Retreat at Bradley's Pond the pergola is situated under large majestic oak trees a light wind made it nice as we decorated. We laid lush greenery garland with a few flowers tucked in at the edge of the walk way.

Our white garden urns filled with hydrangea yellow roses and sun flowers setting on top of our white columns were a stunning entrance to the ceremony site.

Swags of beautiful fresh flowers and grape vine adorn the pergola to give it a beautiful touch.

The bride had fans and ice cold water for all her attendees. Her bouquet was sunflowers and white roses.

1. When should you meet with your wedding florist?

It is recommend to meet with your florist 6 months to one year before your wedding date.

It is helpful to have all these items in place before you meet with your florist

5. Your bridesmaids dress color

2. How do I select a florist?

Word of mouth is good. Ask your friends that have recently tied the knot,who they used. Check online such places as Wedding Wire or The Knot, read reviews. If you are using a planner she/he can also make suggestions.

3. What should I do before meeting with a florist?

Understand the types and styles of bouquets and flowers you like. Start a board on pinterest just for your wedding flowers. Bouquets, boutonnieres, corsages, ceremony flowers and centerpiece are all good choices to research and pin. Most florist would love for you to share your board with them, so they can share your vision and understand the styles and flowers you are interested in.

4. Are all Florist equal?

No. This may sound strange, however it is good to visit their websites and look to see if they have their own designs displayed and how relevant their pictures are to your style of wedding. Many will have blogs, pinterest boards, instagram and facebook pages. Visiting these as well.

Pure Southern Class - A Wedding to Remember!

One of our weddings this past weekend featured beautiful blue and white hydrangeas, mini green hydrangeas, yellow garden roses, and yellow and white calla lilies. Take a look at some of the stunning photos we snapped of this gorgeous day!

This was the bride's bouquet. Isn't it gorgeous?

These lovely table settings included hydrangeas in the Bride's own collection of china

This arch way was the display for the wedding cake. We decorated it with hydrangeas, magnolia leaves and curry willow crawling up and weaving throughout.

The family had this lovely seating area set up for guests to lounge and enjoy wedding festivities.

The family also had this charming area for the men to spoke a cigar and enjoy a drink or two. Additionally, the bottle of bourbon on the table had been buried upside before the wedding and dug up on the couple's wedding day - an old Southern tradition that promises it won't rain on your special day! (Notice the sunny skies all around!)

The ceremony at the church included even more hydrangeas!
