This is the blog for my new design studio Island Continent which is set to launch in February specialising in all things fashion, design, art and Oz. After a solid and successful 8 years, working for some incredible dream clients, awards in NY and Cannes, breaking into the US Editorial market and fulfilling my childhood dream of illustrating for USA Rolling Stone, it's time for a kit-kat and a well earned good nights sleep. So I am scaling back my illustration commissions for 2012 and only taking on special projects for the immediate future. Great Big Book of Fashion Illustration By Martin Dawber is being released this September in the UK and October in the US. I was invited to participate in the book by the fantastic Martin whom has written several book on illustration particularly in the fashion illustration genre. Released in 5 languages by Batsford LTD and featuring over 1000 fashion illustrations from across the globe (including Australia:) on 416 pages, I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy.

Something different. One of my artworks was referenced for questions on last years VCE Studio Arts Exam paper here in Victoria Australia. Takes me back to those uncomfortable plastic chairs and cold dusty exam rooms of Year 12. How strange life is.

Advertising Age Magazine US got in touch to commission an illustration for an article titled "Why $#*! Our TV's Say Is No Longer Taboo" Little did I know that the issue would feature an illustration of The Simpsons! by Julius Preite who also illustrated the fabulous spread of The Simpsons go to Paris for Harpers Bazaar in August 2009.

I'm super excited to be a part of this incredible show in London of Australian Artists. And was lucky enough to have part of my piece for the show featured on the flyer. Life is the debut UK exhibition curated by Heaps Good, showcasing 19 of Australia’s leading emerging and established artists with the aim of raising funds and awareness for (RED).
On show between 1st – 6th July at East Gallery, London – this groundbreaking exhibition features work from artists:

Wear a Helmet / Flame Fortune / Molly / Michael Hutchence / 80s

Anyone who grew up in the 80s would remember when wearing a helmet became a hot topic amongst the rat bags in the quadrangle at recess. Should I forgo my spikey gelled mullet for helmet hair? The Peter's ice cream punnet just doesn't cut it when scull hits gutter anymore. Where you lucky enough to get a stackhat? Which colour? Yellow, pink, white or orange? Mine was the stock standard orange which I wore proudly while riding my red BMX with safety flag, spokey dokey's and a slice of cardboard pegged to the back tyre for extra clap.

One of my favourite ad's from the 80s was the 'Bike Right' campaign, surprisingly not on youtube. It featured a pin legged lass riding her beach cruiser in the dark with her reflector badges, flag and safety jacket all flying on to her bike Tron style with the stock standard 80s voiceover man stating the obvious "Wheel, pedal reflectors"ect. The best.

Another great campaign in this series from the RTA was the 'Wear a Helmet' commercial featuring the King of Moomba 2009. Apart from Molly, the colours, the incredible animation, the soundtrack is a particular highlight. Interestingly not an original score for the commercial but a sans lyrical version of 'Sex Symbol' by Flame Fortune and produced by Michael Hutchence.
Helmets have never sounded so good. Enjoy!

Paul Kelly for Rolling Stone Magazine RS Awards 2011

A week before Christmas I got a call from Cameron Emerson-Elliot from Rolling Stone Australia to illustrate this years Rolling Stone Award winner Paul Kelly. Not only was it a childhood dream to illustrate for Rolling Stone but also being a massive Paul Kelly fan Christmas came early in 2010! Below are some shots of the double page spread which is out now in the March issue of RS Australia.

The awards where held on Australia Day eve and one off prints of each of the award winners portraits where auctioned off on the night with the proceeds going to the Queensland flood victims. The award winners where illustrated by 11 Australian illustrators including fav's and mates WeBuyYourKids & Matt Huynh. Many, many thanks to Cameron Emerson-Elliot, AD at Rolling Stone Australia!

Picked up these two beauties for 20 cents a pop at the local Oppy. Lucky for me I scored a working Sony Beta tape player from a tip a few years back. VHS and BETA just never die! Haven't had a chance to bust out some 1984 moves with Leigh Farnell just yet, that's him taking an air mark on the cover.
