Aim of the Experiment: To monitoring and managing Linux process

Software Required:

1. VMware

2. Rhel 7.0

Theory:

Process: A process is nothing but, a running instance of a launched, executable program. Process has life that’s why it needs resources. Like files, cpu, resister, stack ,PC, webcam, Printer etc…

Program: It is a set of instruction, written in a programming language and saved in a file. Programs are written to solve real time problem. Program is in-active (passive) in nature that’s why it has no life. It does not need any resources.

Foreground Processes: They run on the screen and need input from the user.
Background Processes: They run in the background and usually do not need user input.

Implementation/Steps:

Suppose, I am playing a music with banshee player #banshee

To stop the running command, press #(ctrl+z)

To continue it and take it in foreground #fg banshee

To see all running process on the Linux machine #top

It will appear something like this:

To move out of the process display: press ‘q’

To check all the processes running under a user #ps ux

To check process status of a single process #ps 1268

To terminate a running process kill 1268

To know the PID of a command (Xorg) #pidof Xorg

To terminate/kill all running process #killall

NICE

Linux can run a lot of processes at a time, which can slow down the speed of some high priority processes and result in poor performance. To tell our machine to prioritize processes as per our requirements.

nice has a value between -20 to 19. The lower the Niceness index, the higher would be a priority given to that task.

The default value of all the processes is 0.

To renice the value #renice 20-p 2952

#renice ‘nice value’ –p ‘PID’

To check the free disk space on all file system #df

To see free disk space in readable form #df –h

Conclusion:

In this experiment I know about process, fore-ground, back-ground process, about job of the processes, to kill the running process, to renice the processes, and to see the storage etc.

How to create repository server and connect it to client in linux?

Aim of the Experiment: To create repository server and connect it to client

Software Required:

1. VMware

2. Rhel 7.0

Theory:

Repository Server: Repository server is the central storage location where all software packages are stored, from there our system can installs OS updates and applications. Each repository is a collection of software.

Implementation/Steps:

Ø First we will login as root

Ø We will check, on the desktop, whether the Rhel-7 software file is showing or not.

§ If not: follow the process (VM àSettingàCD/DVD àDevice StatusàCheck connected à Ok).

§ If yes:

Ø Make a Directory, name “mnt” in root(/). As (mkdir /mnt)

Ø We will mount the “dev/sr0” content in “mnt” dir. As (mount /dev/sr0 /mnt)

Ø we will go to Packages file. As (cd /mnt/Packages).

Ø Here we will install some Packages. As (rpm-ivh createrepo* deltarpm* python- deltarpm* vsftpd* ftp* --nodeps –force).

Ø Then we will make a directory, DVD. As (mkdir /var/ftp/pub/dvd)

Ø Now we will copy file content in the DVD dir. As (cp –rvf * /var/ftp/pub/dvd).

Ø Now from the root directory we will create a repository file, name “dvd.repo”. As (createrepo –v /var/ftp/pub/dvd)

Ø Then we will configure the repo server. As(vim /etc/yum.repos.d/dvd.repo)

· Then save it by (esc+:wq)

Ø After saving the configuration, we will restart the ftp service.

Now we will configure Client Machine:

Every file, directory, and other system objects in Linux are assigned an owner and a group. Owners, users belonging to a group, and all others may be granted different types of access to read from, write to, or execute files. ... This is generally referred to as file permissions in Linux.

Aim of the Experiment: Linux File Permission

Software Required:

1. VMware

2. Rhel 7.0

Theory: To change directory and file permission in Linux, Each file and directory in Linux has three permission levels which define how a user can access a particular file or directory. These levels are user/owner, group and other. Each permission level has three type of permission; read, write and execute. This type of permission defines what a user can do with a particular object.

owner: The Owner permissions apply only the owner of the file or directory, they will not impact the actions of other users.

group: The Group permissions apply only to the group that has been assigned to the file or directory, they will not effect the actions of other users.

other: The other permissions apply to all other users on the system.

Each file or directory has three basics permission types:

read: The Read permission refers to a user’s capability to read the contents of the file.

write: The Write permissions refer to a user’s capability to write or modify a file or directory.

execute: The Execute permission affects a user’s capability to execute a file or view the contents of a directory.

Implementation/Steps:

To check the permission : ls –l

To see hidden file/directory also ls-al

It will show in this form: -rwxrw-r-- OR rwxrwxrwx

Firtst hyphen ‘-’ It shows type of file

Suppose a file is there, name diploma and its permission is rwxrw-r--

rwx: Read Write Execute

rw-: Read and Write

r--: Only read

First group defines: Owner can read, modify and execute the diploma file.

Second groups: Group can read and modify the file, but can’t execute

Third group: Others can read only the diploma file.

Now to Change the permission

command is chmod

To add the permission we use ‘+’

To remove the permission we use ‘-’

chmod g+x diploma now group members can execute the diploma file

chmod o+w diploma Now others can modify the file

chmod g-w diploma Now group members cant modify the file

chmod u-x diploma Now owner cant execute the file diploma

we can do it by using Number also:

We will use command chmod

To set permissions of diploma to –rw-r—r-- chmod 644 diploma

To set permission of diploma to –rwxrwxrwx chmod 777 diploma

To set permission of file1 to drw-rw-r-- chmod 664 file1

To set permission of file2 to -r---w---x chmod 421file2

umask

We can set the file permission by using umask value.

To check the umask value #umask :022(mine)

A umask of 022 basically means don't remove any permissions from the base value for "user" but "group" and "other" is not allowed write permission

777-022= 755

So the command is.. chmod 755 file_name

Like this we can change the access permission of a particular file…

Conclusion: In this experiment I learned to change the file access permission with two commands chown and chmod. And get familiar with umask. Now I can change any file permission by using these command…

Aim of the Experiment: To manage local users and groups in Linux

Software Required:

1. VMware

2. Rhel 7.0

Theory:

User Management: To create users, delete users, modify existing users, to done these types of managements called User Management.

In this experiment we will learn, to create users, delete users, to modify existing users, to set reasonable defaults for all field in (/etc/passwd) , some default managements such as range of valid UID numbers and default password aging rules, that can be read from the ( /etc/login.defs ) file.

Some switching users command, su and sudo.

Implementation/Steps:

First, i started the virtual machine.

Then in the Terminal I did practice with commands.

Such as:

To add a new user. useradd Ram

To assign password for Ram . passwd Ram

To delete a user userdel Ram

To check logged in user. #id

To check Ram’s id. #Ram id

To see ownership of a particular file #ls –l filename

To see owner of the Process #ps –ef or ps –au

To see the user account information #gedit /etc/passwd

To create a group #groupadd diploma

To delete a group #groupdel diploma

Switching User With Su and Sudo

su: This command allows a user to switch to different a user account. But it doesn’t give us clear login and also requires password for the particular user.

#su Ram (It will take us to Ram’s account)

#su root (It will take us to root’s account)

#su (If we don’t mention user, will also take us to Root)

Here I’ve not used (-) so, its not clear login.

su - : This command also perform same task as su but gives us a clear login .

#su - Ram (It will take us to Ram’s account)

#su - root (It will take us to root’s account)

#su - (If we don’t mention user, will also take us to Root)

Here I’vet used (-) so, it gave me clear login.

#exit (This command is used to return previous logged account.)

sudo: By using this command we get clear login and, doesn’t need password to login, but whatever changes we do here it will be recorded in log file. Administrator can see, whatever I have done over here.

#sudo Ram (This cmd. allows us to switch Ram’s account, without Ram’s password.)

#sudo - (Through this cmd. I can switch to Root account, instead of giving root password, have to give my password)

Conclusion:

Now I’ve some knowledge about user management in linux.

How to reset the root password using rd.break command in linux?

Aim of the Experiment: To reset the root password using rd.break command

Software Required: VMware, rhel7 Operating System

Theory:

Password: Password can be contained of Numbers, Alphabets, and Special characters. To login/enter in any secured, account/places/devices, we need a security permission, that can be either password or biometric. By entering the password we will be able to access them.

And when we talk about Root Password, here Root is a type of user. And root password means, the password through which root user can get access.

Implementation/Steps:

1. 1. First I started the virtual machine.

2. During booting time, pressed ‘e’ to take it in editing mode.

3. Looked for a line “Linux16” and at end of that line typed “rd.break”. And pressed CTRL+X to take it from boot into emergency mode.

4. After that I remounted the sysroot file system in “read write” mode.

5. Then used command “chroot” to go in to the chroot jail.

6. Then gave the command “passwd” in the command line to change the root password.

7. After that in the line named new password, I typed my new password and again I retyped the same password.

8. In next step typed “touch /.autorelabel” to save the changes.

9. Then I gave “exit” command two times to come out form the chroot environment.

10. And at last, logged out. And system got reboot.

Theory:

Basic Linux Commands: Commands are some format of texts, through which one can access the things and, can do whatever he wants without visiting in different directories, or interfaces. He can do his all works form one particular place/interface, in Linux that particular interface is called Terminal, from where one can do his all works just by giving commands (texting).

Implementation/Steps:

First, i started the virtual machine.

Then in the Terminal I did practice with commands.

Such as:

#date (To know current date and Time)

#cal (To get current calendar)

#cd (To go to current user’s Home directory ‘/root’)

#pwd (To list the user’s current working directory)

#cd - (To return user’s previous working directory)

#cd .. (To return one step back from present working directory)

#cd ../.. (To return two step back from present working directory)

#cd -- (To go to current user’s Home directory ‘/root’)

#ls (To list the contents in a directory)

#touch (To create an empty text file)

#mkdir (To create an empty directory)

#rmdir (To remove an non-empty directory)

#rm (To remove an text file)

#rm –r (To remove a directory recursively)

#clear (To clear the contents from Terminal)

Conclusion:

Now I’ve familiar with basic commands of Linux.

What is File System Hierarchy

Aim of the Experiment: File System Hierarchy

Software Required: Linux Operating System

Theory:

File System Hierarchy: In the Linux System, all files are stored in a file system, which are organized on a single inverted tree of directories, known as File System Hierarchy.

Implementation/Steps:

1. Power on the virtual Machine

2. Opened the Terminal

It’s the structure, how File System Hierarchy Looks:

The top one “/” is the Root Directory.

And the downsides are called subdirectories.

Every particular directory has a particular task, means you will get different type of working data in each and every particular directory.

Like:

/: (root) Every single files and directories starts form root direcrory.

/bin: This directory contains executable programs which are needed in single user mode and to bring the system up or repair it.

/boot: Booting files are contained here.

/dev: It contains all system devices files.

/etc: It contains configuration files.

/home: Here, regular users keep their personal data and configuration file.

/root: Home directory of root user, which is not same as /.

/run: It contains runtime data like: ID files and Lock files.

/sbin: This directory holds commands needed to boot the system, but which are usually not executed by normal users.

/tmp: It contains temporary files.

/usr: It contains installed software, files and static read only program data. Some directories are also here:

/usr/bin: Temporary files that is preserved between system reboots.

/usr/sbin: This directory contains program binaries for system administration which are not essential for the boot process, for mounting /usr, or for system repair.

/usr/local: The /usr/local hierarchy is for use by the system administrator when installing software locally.

/var: It contains Dynamic contents (database, cache directories, log file, log file, websites data).

Conclusion:

By doing this experiment, I learned to check which directories contain which types of files and about File System Hierarchy.

Aim of the Experiment: To create a virtual machine and install rhel 7 in that machine

Software Required: VMware, rhel7 iso file

Theory: VMware is desktop software. It runs on Microsoft windows, Linux and macOS. Here we can run Operating System whatever we want , we can install Linux products (Rhel, Ubuntu, Kali etc.) on a Windows OS. And we can also run Windows products on Linux, by the help of VMware.

Rhel 7.0:- Rhel stands for Red Hat Enterprise Linux. And 7.0 means, it’s the 7^th version of Rhel. And it is a distribution of Linux operating system. It is an open source Operating System.

Implementation/Steps:

1. First I downloaded the VMware workstation software file and Rhel7.0 iso file.

Then installed the VMware in Windows Operating System.

3. After that create a virtual machine in VMware.

4. And attached the Rhel 7.0 iso file with the CD/DVD of that particular virtual machine.

5. Then started to install the OS by following the appropriate procedures.

6. In middle that made two users & passwords for user and Root.

7. In the last few steps, some advance and important steps were there , I went through that very attentively. Like partitions of Storages, desktop Interface and some other.

8. And after reboot , my system was ready to Go…
