The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations on behalf of the German Government.

The global program “Sustainability and Value Added in Agricultural Supply Chains” is part of the special initiative “ONE WORLD – No Hunger” (SEWOH). On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the program promotes the sustainability of selected agricultural supply chains in partner countries.

Agricultural commodities like coffee, cocoa, natural rubber, palm oil or soybean play an important role for rural development in many developing and emerging economies where they form the basis for the life of millions of households. However, their production and processing are accompanied by numerous ecological, economic and social challenges. Often supplied as unprocessed raw material into global supply chains, limited value is added in producing countries. Many farming households are struggling to meet their basic needs and to invest in sustainable production practices. Furthermore, coffee, cocoa, palm oil and soybean are often perceived as drivers of deforestation and forest degradation. With consuming markets and multi-national companies strengthening their efforts to eliminate deforestation and human rights abuses from the supply chain, sustainability of raw material is becoming a precondition for market access.

To address these challenges the program implements the project “Sustainability and Value Added in Agricultural Supply Chains in Indonesia” (SASCI+). SASCI+ focuses on natural rubber, palm oil, cocoa and coffee in two biosphere reserves in West Kalimantan and Central Sulawesi. By increasing the sustainable production of agricultural commodities and strengthening downstream processing and market linkages, the project aims to increase the farmers’ incomes, safeguard natural resources and establish deforestation free supply chains. SASCI+ follows a jurisdictional approach to align relevant stakeholders on shared objectives for sustainable land use and production, as a means for long-term market access and security of supply.

SASCI+ is implemented together with the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, the political partner of the project. The project furthermore cooperates with the Indonesian Ministry of the Environment and Forestry, regional and district governments in the targeted biosphere reserves, as well as stakeholders from civil society, research and the private sector involved in sustainable agricultural supply chains.

Responsibilities

Strengthen the position of the project within the institutional environment in Indonesia
Manage the successful engagement of project partners on the national level
Align the conceptual design of the project with the regulatory environment in Indonesia
Contribute to the strategic and operational planning of the project
Contribute to a learning environment, where progress is assed critically and learnings are used in management

Tasks

1.Knowledge and advisory services

Observe relevant developments and build knowledge on policies, regulations, research and initiatives on sustainable agricultural supply chains in Indonesia, including on national agricultural policy as well as national and sub-national initiatives
Provide technical and institutional knowledge to guide strategic planning and implementation of the project
Advise the political and implementing partners as well as stakeholders from government, civil society and the private sector on sustainability in agricultural supply chains, market access and value addition
Advise and facilitate jurisdictional approaches and multi-stakeholder initiatives to align on shared objectives for sustainable production and land use planning
Provide professional inputs to workshops, seminars and other events implemented by the project or partners
Contribute to the development of concepts and materials for capacity development, including guidelines, cooperation agreements, training manuals, and procedures
Prepare technical documents and reports as well as presentations for the purpose of public communication, project reporting and knowledge sharing

2. Partnership management and coordination

Cooperate and maintain regular contact with relevant parties from government, civil society, research institutes, private sector and international agencies
Engage partners on the national level in project planning and implementation
Facilitate successful cooperation and coordination between and support by relevant government agencies at national, provincial, and district levels
Engage stakeholders from government, civil society and the private sector in jurisdictional multi-stakeholder initiatives
Support the project and partners in the design and implementation of concepts for sustainable supply chains and public private partnerships
Participate in and contribute to relevant processes, fora, events and meetings on the national and sub-national level
Participate in the planning and implementation of study tours, visiting delegations, exchange visits, missions from GIZ and German government institutions, and other official events

3. Project management and coordination

Support the team in planning, coordination and successful implementation of project activities on the national level as well as in the two biosphere reserves
Plan and implement project activities in line with GIZ procedures, rules and regulations, including service contracts, events and financing agreements
Prepare terms of reference for service contracts or financing agreements and participate in the selection and supervision of contracted third parties
Coordinate the implementation of project activities with team members, partners and contracted third parties
Contribute to the design and implementation of a comprehensive monitoring systems to track progress in the project and to inform management
Organize internal and external events and meetings

Job Requirements

At least a bachelor’s degree and preferably a master’s degree in agricultural or business economics, natural resource management, business management, international relations or a related field, preferably with a focus on agricultural commodities, sustainability, and / or multi-stakeholder initiatives
A minimum of 10 years of professional experience, of which at least 5 years in a comparable position
At least 5 years’ experience in providing advisory services on sustainability in agricultural supply chains to government agencies, private sector associations and development agencies
Sound knowledge of policies and regulations related to agricultural commodities, land use planning and climate change in the land sector in Indonesia
Knowledge of the international discussion on sustainability in agricultural supply chains
Proven experience working in or in close cooperation with government agencies, ideally related to the Ministry of Agriculture and / or the Ministry of Environment and Forestry
Experience in engaging stakeholders from different institutional backgrounds in multi-stakeholder initiatives
Experience in working on a landscape or jurisdictional approach, value chain development, sustainability certification and traceability desirable
Experience working for or in cooperation with the private sector in agricultural supply chains strongly preferred; experience working in or in cooperation with an international organization is considered an advantage

Other knowledge, additional competences

Strong network with institutions working on agricultural commodities and sustainability
Proven ability to engage partners in collaborative initiatives or projects
Strong analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills
Ability to communicate complex topics to be understood by a broad audience

Description THE PROGRAM: China is now the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gasses (GHGs). That humans are impacting the climate is not disputed in China as poor air quality makes the issues a very real and current problem. With rapid economic growth and urban development, it is estimated that there will be 1 billion urban dwellers in China by 2030 and approximately 250 million middle class consumers entering the market over the next 10-15 years, driving continued increases in energy consumption and GHG emissions. WildAid has successfully reduced shark consumption in China by 50-70% through mass media campaigning and now wants to use that model to reduce carbon emissions in China in partnership with the Chinese government and media. The “5 To Do Today” campaign is designed to influence attitudes, inspire behavioral change and create support for climate action. WildAid believes that individuals can make a significant, collective impact by modifying their daily routines to reduce their individual environmental footprint and that this will create an atmosphere receptive to policy change within China. It has already a stable of top celebrities and initial materials. THE POSITION: The Climate Program Director (CPD) will lead the development of the program both thematically and financially. Reporting to the Managing Director and based in San Francisco, the CPD is responsible for identifying opportunities and strategies, cultivating and securing partnerships in China and sources of funding in the US, conducting research, creating strategies for roll out and measurement of the campaign’s effectiveness. They will provide leadership, technical expertise, and guidance to staff, volunteers, potential partners, and donors on all aspects of the program. From establishing goals and success factors to developing project plans and growing the budget from $600,000 to $1,000,000+, the CPD will balance overall program management, cost, and scope. KEY PRIORITIES IDENTIFYING KEY OPPORTUNITIES AND PARTNERS Currently WildAid reaches over 1 billion consumers across 35 different platforms through over 50 media partnerships. Leveraging this media strength and the demonstrated strong political will in China, there is a great opportunity to build relationships and partnerships for massive campaign impact in China. The CPD should identity key targets (eg. public transport use, energy use reductions) and partners (eg City governments, media, industry etc.) COMMUNICATIONS The CPD will need to quickly grasp WildAid’s approach. Being able to fully embrace the power of the media to create awareness, excitement, partnerships, events, and more ambassadors is a priority for the success of the program. FUNDRAISING The CPD will leverage their sector knowledge and contacts to ensure that all program initiatives are aligned and funded. This will include identifying and soliciting potential partners across the U.S. and potentially internationally, as well as preparing supporting materials, writing reports, and grant–writing. IUCN’s Global Forest and Climate Change Programme is seeking a motivated and creative communications professional to contribute to the delivery and uptake of targeted knowledge and communications for its thematic work on REDD+ and Locally Controlled Forests.

The Communications Officer will work with programme and project colleagues to identify and facilitate effective and efficient pipelines and pathways for transforming lessons, findings and analysis from the programme into desired impact upon policy and practice through targeted audiences. Experience with impact-driven knowledge and communications approaches is essential, as is wide-ranging experience in writing and editing. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Overall responsibility

Under the supervision of the Manager, Knowledge and Communications, and in collaboration with programme and project staff the Communications Officer will develop and execute communications and outreach strategies to raise awareness of IUCN’s project and programmatic work on REDD+ and LCF. Key responsibilities include executing a communications and outreach strategy, ensuring consistency in all communications, producing marketing materials (brochures, presentations, newsletters, social media, etc.), event planning and promotion, desktop publishing, media engagement, and maintaining alignment with IUCN’s overall global communications strategy.

More specifically the Communications Officer will:
• Build clear and consistent programmatic messaging on REDD+ and LCF, based on identified synergies across projects and other programme activities, and improve integration across platforms and media channels
• With programme and project staff, develop and execute communications plans that contribute to learning frameworks and knowledge uptake plans:
o For the programmatic themes of REDD+ and LCF
o For GFCCP projects and initiatives that fall under the themes of REDD+ and LCF
• In collaboration with the Knowledge and Learning Officer, monitor project and national reporting on an ongoing basis to identify key stories and knowledge outputs and results, building the programmatic messaging on REDD+ and LCF.
• Manage the production and dissemination of high quality and evidence-led communications and marketing materials in a variety of formats.
• Create compelling and persuasive slideshows and other presentation materials.
• Draft press releases and media advisories and contribute to the writing of other program materials.
• Engage key audiences through online and social media, which may include Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Flickr.
• Maintain the REDD+ and LCF sub-sites of the IUCN web pages and act as the IUCN focal point for any external REDD+ and LCF related programme websites.
• Monitor and report on media placements, website analytics and other communications impact metrics.
• Organize media events.
• Provide substantive backstopping to meetings, to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, facilitation of meetings.
• Liaise with national and regional teams to understand capacity needs and requirements in relation to the above.
• Contribute to broader IUCN communications and media engagement on REDD+ and LCF.
• In consultation with the GFCCP Manager of Knowledge and Communications, maintain relationships with communications staff of other international and regional organizations working on relevant REDD+ and LCF issues, particularly those that are crucial to project and programme delivery because of partnership commitments.

REQUIREMENTS

• A minimum of 3 years of previous experience in communications, marketing, public relations, or journalism, with evidence of strong writing and editing skills across a range of styles and issues; and experience working within IUCN or a similar organization is an asset.
