But just a 15-minute walk across the island, Bulabog is the domain of those who flock from around the world to harness the wind that comes charging into the cove.

There were at least 50 massive kites in the air. Their riders raced back and forth across the water, sometimes twisting and turning 10 metres in the air, as a few windsurfers weaved between them.

Angel Parzhuben, a native of Munich and his partner, Normeth Preglo, helped put Boracay on the kite-boarding map when they opened Hángin Kiteboarding Centre in 2002. It was the first school and rental outfit on Boracay, which has since become one of the world’s best-known destinations for wind-seekers.

An increasing number of people are picking up the habit. Mr Parzhuben said kite-boarding is the world’s fastest-growing sport. Recent advances in technology have made it much easier and safer, which partly explains its surging popularity.

ILOILO CITY – The Department of Tourism has assured the safety of tourists traveling to Boracay Island via the Caticlan airport.

No less than Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano assured that operations at the Caticlan airport have returned to normal, a day after a plane undershot the runway and slammed into a concrete barrier.

“We assure tourists that airport authorities have carried out rigorous runway inspections to ensure the safety of the airport for take-off and landing,” said Durano in a statement.

The airport was closed to traffic for five hours on Monday after a Zest Air plane from Manila fell short of the runway when it landed around 6:58 a.m. Sunday.

Caticlan-bound flights were rerouted to the Kalibo airport until the Caticlan airport re-opened around 12:30 p.m.

The island paradise is small and not that easy to get to, you have to fly to Manila or Cebu, take another domestic flight in a 32-seater (or smaller) plane, hop onto a short 5-minute jeepney ride to a jetty to take a 15 to 20 minute boat ride to the island. But once you get there, you'll experience an island paradise like what you see in postcards. And most importantly, it's an affordable holiday in these lean times. A three-day package, including transfers, costs about $650.

Located about an hour's flight from Manila or Cebu, Boracay is in the western Visayas. The island is shaped like a dog bone, the island is all of 7km long and 1km at its narrowest width. You can walk the entire length of the island. The main part of the island is, of course, White Beach (or Long Beach as the locals call it). Aptly named because of its powder white fine sand.

White Beach stretches some 4km and is on the western side of the island. It faces the Sulu Sea and the crystal clear blue water makes it hard to resist a dip in the shallow sea. Boracay has been named one of the best beaches in the world. Only those who've visited the island can see and understand why.

Apart from lazing under a palm tree, you can go on a short hiking trail. Hilly areas in the northern and southern parts of the island rise up to 100m above sea level. There are numerous intertwining trails, some leading through tropical jungles for hikers to explore.

While you won't get any of the infamous Philippine-styled mega malls here, you can still find some souvenir shopping in Boracay. The Talippapa Market offers some bargains for the usual souvenirs, from trinkets and magnets to beach sarongs and beach hats.

When night falls, you're in for another surprise. The entire stretch of beach turns into an alfresco bar and dining area. You'll find some 200 restaurants and snack bars around the island offering cuisine from local Filipino to French, Italian and even Middle Eastern. This just goes to show the diverse tourist crowd that throngs the island.

The Number of tourists who spent the holiday season on Boracay Island, one of the country’s foremost destination spots, has declined due to global economic meltdown.

Reports said the tourist arrivals went down by almost 20 percent. In the previous years, resort owners said all their rooms would have been booked during the holidays. When the financial crisis hit big economies like the US and Europe, they lamented a noticeable decline in the reservations.

Resort owners specifically pointed out a significant drop in the number of European tourists. There are more than 300 hotels and apartelles in Boracay, which is famous for its white-sand beach. They added that they are still lucky because local tourists still continue to flock Boracay despite the hard times.

Meanwhile, they are optimistic that tourist arrivals will surge again during summer. They added that Russian investments in Boracay might also attract more visitors, particularly from Europe.

Tourists can now fly directly to Aklan for Boracay tour

Tourist from South Korea can now fly directly to Kalibo, Aklan, and need not make a stopover in Manila if they would like to go to Boracay Island, the Bureau of Immigration announced last week.

Kalibo town is now a limited port of entry for foreigners after the BI opened its office there to service international flights, according to Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan.

Libanan said in a statement that the bureau started its Kalibo operations on May 11, processing the documents of the 65 passengers of the maiden flight of an Asian Spirit jetliner that brought tourists from Incheon, South Korea.

Generators to power Boracay for next two months

Resorts and hotels on Boracay Island will be depending on generator sets for most of the next two months because power supply will be cut off due to an ongoing construction of a power sub-station on the island-resort.
The power interruption started August 8 and is estimated to last from 45 to 60 days until the construction of a 30-mva sub-station of the Aklan Electric Cooperative (Akelco) shall have been completed.

The construction of the 30-mva substation is being undertaken at Sitio Tambisaan in Barangay Manoc-Manoc at the southern end of the 1,000-hectare island.

The project is intended to stabilize the power supply of the island, which has grown significantly because of the tourism boom.

"We have to live with it because it's also for the good of the island once the project is completed. Hopefully it will be completed as scheduled before the peak season starts in October," said Cann.

Boracay to have daily brownouts until September

Boracay Island started to return to its normal life after typhoon “Frank” wrecked Western Visayas.

Chief of the Boracay Special Tourist Police Office, Senior Inspector Auxilio Dador, said residents and employees of resorts and hotels have been cleaning up the debris and damage brought by typhoon Frank.

The white beach, the island-resort's main attraction, has been largely spared but strong winds and rampaging waters damaged resorts and houses at the Bolabog beach at the opposite side of the 1,000-hectare island. Bolabog is a site favored for waters sports like jet skiing, para-sailing and surfing.

And after her son was declared winner in the fight against Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez on Saturday in Las Vegas (Sunday in Manila), she revealed her wish -- a trip to Boracay for the whole family.

Dionisia and her three other close friends prayed earnestly inside the prayer room of Pacquiao's mansion in Lagao village here.

Dionisia claimed it was the longest prayer session they did.

"Sobra dalawang oras kami sa loob ng prayer room. Nakatapos kami ng tatlong misteryo ng Holy Rosary. Namanhid ang tuhod ko sa tagal ng dasal namin," Dionisia claimed. [We spent two hours praying. We finished three mysteries of the Holy Rosary. My knees went numb from kneeling.]

Although she still did not know when her son would be returning home, she said she expected him to be home soon as his youngest daughter Princess was here.

And when the Filipino ring sensation is finally home, she has only one wish -- a vacation in Boracay for the whole family.

"Maganda don sa Boracay. Di pa ako nakapunta dun eh," Dionisia said. [It’s beautiful there in Boracay. I haven’t gone there.]

But Pacquioa's father, Rosalio, said he would not ask for anything from Manny.

"I don't ask anything from Manny. He just gives on his own volition. I can't ask for anything," Rosalio told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Pacquiao’s parents are now living separately.

When asked whether Rosalio could go with them to Boracay, Dionisia laughed and said, "We can't decide for him (Rosalio). May magagalit na iba." [Somebody might get mad.]

Unlike his estranged wife, Rosalio watched the fight.

"Muntik akong mag-collapse noong medyo na-groggy si Manny sa second round dahil tinamaan siya ng mabibigat na suntok ni Marquez. Mataas kasi blood pressure ko," Rosalio said. [I almost collapsed from seeing Manny becoming groggy in the second round due to the punches of Marquez. I have high blood pressure.]

"Matibay rin talaga si Marquez kasi nakabangon pa nung pinatumba ng anak ko eh. Pero mas matibay si Manny. "Our troops on the ground enjoyed watching his fight. We are happy at least Filipinos have united even in just few hours. It's very peaceful elsewhere in the region," Kabalu said.

Terror suspect falls in Boracay

MANILA, Philippines -- Intelligence operatives reportedly swooped down on the resort island of Boracay over the weekend and arrested a fourth suspect in connection with an alleged international terrorist plot to bomb foreign embassies and assassinate prominent personalities.

Armed Forces Chief of Staff General Hermogenes Esperon Jr. on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of one Filipino who had been linked to three suspected foreign terrorists -- two Jordanians and an Indonesian -- rounded up between February 15 and 29 in Manila and Davao.

“They were supposed to bomb some embassies and they were out to take direct actions against top VIPs...probably including the President,” Esperon told reporters in Malacañang.

They are believed to be part of a terrorist cell in Manila with links to al-Qaeda, the extremist group led by Saudi national Osama bid Laden that claimed the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York in 2001.

The Filipino suspect, said Esperon, had recently returned from abroad and was believed to be involved in raising funds for the terrorist operation.

Traders lament confusing situation in Boracay

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan -- Business owners here are pushing for the designation of a single authority to oversee the development and rehabilitation of this world-famous island.

The current situation is confusing, with the local and provincial governments, the Department of Tourism and the Philippine Tourism Authority, and other government agencies all implementing projects and policies on the island, said businessman Philippe Bartholomi.

Bartholomi is chair of the Boracay Chamber of Commerce Inc. (BCCI) executive committee which met with Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano on Friday.

Bartholomi told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that while these agencies were working to develop the island, “this is not toward one direction.”

Durano said he recognized the problem, but he told the business owners that “what is important is that all of us agree on a common agenda so our actions will complement one another.”

Later, he told the Inquirer: “I sympathize with them and I understand why they feel the need for it [one direction].”

But he said the current situation was a reality the stakeholders had to live with.

During the meeting, Durano announced the crafting of a new master plan for the island, which he acknowledged was overcrowded.

The master plan will include wider roads and a drainage system, he said.

“But demolishing or starting from scratch, with all the development already in place, is impossible,” he said, to allay the fears of local business owners the plan would affect their businesses.

This year, hundreds of Russians came to hold their Russian Cup in Bulabog Beach and celebrated their Russian New Year at the white beach ...DOT supported the event and made sure they had a great time durign their 40 days stay in boracay...they have bigger plans next year and according to the head of the group, Mr Andre , also a veteran windsurfing competitor, they are coming back next year with more Russians because they discovered that Boracay has better facilities, good restaurants, great shopping, legendary parties nightly, people can communicate well, with great reliable windy conditions that is also ideal for learning (opposite of) Vietnam which has terrible beach breaks...The Russians were a regular visitor every winter at red sea and Muine in Vietnam in the last 3 years...

DOT should promote heavily Boracay's other side as other important destination in the Philippines because of the fact that there are only two places in Asia which has strong winds and in a resort island,.... You can only find this in Boracay and Vietnam...This is not found in Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia...The windsurfers and kitesurfers profile are middle class or company bosses that goes for a minimum of one week to two weeks holiday in windy places only . They travel alone or with partners and family and spend at least US$150/day for the room, food, drinks, windsurf or kite activities.

Minimum number or kite or windsurfign enthusiast coming to Bulabog beach every year is 3,500-4,000 per season (November to mid-March) giving the island a sure US$ 4,200,000 not including their family or friends travelling with them...

But we need help in maintaining our bay clean for this windsport enthusiast.. .DOT is needed very badly to come in and help us sustain Bulabog's prestine waters ....Asec Cynthia Carrion was in Bulabog last january to attend the Russian Kitesurfing Cup awarding and she was also the special guest in the a Philippines only annual and most successful international sporting event , the Neil Pryde Boracay International Funboard Cup last january 7-12...there were 92 kitesurfers and windsurfers from 18 countries that came to participate in the event. Flooding Theatens Boracay

Toirism officials and resort owners in Boracay island Philippines have warned of the collapesse of the island's tourism industry if flooding on the industry if flooding on the island is not controlled.

Tourism regional director Edwin Trompeta said the flooding wich affected major portion of the 1,000 hetare isalnd during the end of last year could destroy the island's P10-billion tourism industry.

"If not addressed, it will destroy the island in the next two years," Trompeta said in a telephone interview.

Trompeta said they have been swamped by calls and complaints from tourists and resort owners regarding the flooding, the worst experienced by long-time residents of the islands.

The flooding triggered by heavy rains caused canal and sewege pipes to overflow spilling murky and overflowing to the white beach, the island's primary asset and attraction.

Trompeta said the worst affected was areas along Boat Station 2, at the middle of the island. It also severly affected the Boracay Municipal Hospital and the D' Mall commercial complex.

At least 30 percent of the beach area and most of Bulabog area were flooded, said Trompeta.

The PTA operates the Boracay Water and Sewage System (BWSS).

Trompeta said the flooding is proof of unregulated development that has destroyed the ecological balance of the island.

"When you abuse the environment it will get back at you," said Trompeta.

He pointed out that there was a natural lagoon on the island years ago where rainwater accumulated and flowed to the sea.

But buildings were constructed over the lagoon and natural waterways were also covered to accommodate the construction boom.

Trompeta earlier called for the appointment of an administrator for Boracay Island as part of efforts to save the island-resort from unregulated development.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in August last year called for a six-month moratorium on the construction of new buildings on the island until the PTA comes up with a new development master plan for the island which would ensure the protection and sustainable utilization of its resources. The DENR is also planning to come up with an environmental protection master plan for the island within the period.

Boracay's tourist arrivals from January to November last year reached 547,305 and generated P10.062 billion in earnings, a jump from the P8 billion earnings in 2006.

Boracay recycling center helps rid island of garbage

Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan (21 December) — A recycling center here focusing on converting used Styrofoam into other useful items is helping the island get rid of non-biodegradable garbage.

In this recycling center, used Styrofoam are melted and turned or converted into other items which are also used in the island for other purposes.

In converting used Styrofoam into other items, the center uses a bio-reactor equipment furnished by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), according to Provincial Officer Jairus Lachica.

The process, according to Lachica, is simple. Used containers made of Styrofoam from fastfood centers, appliance stores, business establishments and other sources are melted in used oil, and then through a molder, the melted matter is turned into many items which could be used for many purposes.

Lachica revealed that one of the items fashioned out of the used Styrofoam include tiles, which a Boracay resort is already using as materials for its pathwalks.

The recycling center, according to Lachica, is being run by the local government of Malay, with the fund provided by the Department of Tourism (DOT) in coordination with the Boracay Foundation Incorporated (BFI). The DOST, for its part, provided the technology.

Besides recycling used Styrofoam, Lachica also disclosed that the DOST also aids the island by converting other waste matters into organic fertilizer as its waste-management support to the local government of Malay as well to the province and the country’s tourism thrust. (PIA)

Boxer Manny Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach are spending Christmas in sunny Boracay.

Pacquiao stepped foot on the tropical paradise late Thursday afternoon with wife Jinkee, their three children, their “yayas” and a couple of bodyguards while Roach will fly in Saturday with some friends.

It’s the first time for Pacquiao to see Boracay, and he quickly fell in love with the island. The Pacquiaos are staying in one of the villas at West Cove, a high-end resort owned by close friend Cris Aquino.

“I will relax,” said Pacquiao when asked how he intends to spend the next few days in Boracay. “My whole family is with me, and we want to know how Christmas is here in Boracay.”

Aquino, the gun enthusiast and perennial flag-bearer in Pacquiao fights in the US, said the boxer liked his place carved out of the lush, peaceful end of the world-famous island.

Boracay aims to form world-class security force

BORACAY ISLAND: There is a need for world–class police protection in Boracay with the influx ofvisitors to the island.

This was raised by Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Chief Supt. Samuel Pagdilao in aforum, Talakayan sa Isyung Pulis (TSIP) on Saturday, reported Panay News.
Pagdilao cited how the tourism industry suffered in early 2000 after the Abu Sayyaf terroristgroup raided a resort in Palawan.

“We do not want it to happen again. The police play a great role in presenting an image of peaceand order for potential foreign and local tourists visiting Boracay,” Pagdilao said.
Pagdilao and Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) director Chief Supt. Wilfredo Dulay discussed thevarious security preparations in the island.

Dulay said the PNP leadership has been supporting the needs of the PNP personnel in Boracay.
The PNP projected a 20-percent increase in tourist arrival by December from the more or less500,000 tourists recorded in 2006.
