literature into a movie is an
arduous task. Satyajit Ray's
'Apu Trilogy' [PATHER
PANCHALI, APARAJITO and
APUR SANSAR] was based
on two Bengali novels
written by
Bibhuthibhushan
Bandopadhyay. Ray's
SHATRANJ KE KHILADI was
based on Munshi
Premchand's short story of

My favourite moment in
Ashutosh Gowariker's [
Images ] new film comes
when a bunch of
schoolchildren are lying in
an open field, exhausted,
limbs heaped atop one-
another's, looking up at
the clouds and trying to
assimilate the patriotism
they've just been injected
with.
One wonders what Vande
Mataram means, and --
even as a few profess
ignorance and one finally
reveals that it is a
salutation to the
motherland -- a chubby
youth smiles and
comments, simply, that 'it
feels good to say it, doesn't
it?" and repeats the battle-
cry, finding adulthood,
hero worship and
camaraderie all at once.
I confess that despite my
last name, I wasn't very
aware of the Chittagong
uprising in a corner of
Bengal, in which freedom
fighter Surjya Sen and his
companions led over fifty
teen boys in violent,
elaborately-planned
anarchist revolt and struck
an impressive, Empire-
halting blow for the
motherland. It is a critical
incident, one ignored by
centralised History syllabi
and a story that definitely
deserves telling -- and for
this, Mr Gowariker, do take
a bow.
That appreciation aside,
Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey is
a clumsily structured,
unevenly paced film, with
very few moments to
match up to the
aforementioned scene. The
first half unfolds like a
school play -- all stilted
dialogue-delivery, self-
aggrandising smug smiles
('look Ma! I'm playing a
freedom fighter!'), and
white kurtas borrowed
from a Rin commercial --
and, quite frankly, like any
school staging which
doesn't feature a relative
on-stage, the film lulls you
to perplexed sleep.
There is period detailing,
sure, with square-edge'd
badminton rackets, vintage
cars and picturesque
calendars telling us that
January is ticking away, but
between the wooden
dialogue and the
unspectacular acting, this is
simply a school play with a
good art teacher in charge.
It is the second half of the
film that then hits you
straight in the solar plexus,
because after that soporific
opening, here we have
wall-to-wall action. The
Chittagong Uprising makes
for a smashing narrative,
and Gowariker plays it
loyally enough. It isn't
subtle and the direction is
straight out of the Jingoism
Manual, but because the
story itself has such
immense meat, it's hard to
not get sucked in as you
watch it unfold.
The film's own soundtrack
is an ineffective one, but by
the time the end rolls
around, Gowariker falls
back on Vande Mataram
and it unfailingly gets the
job done. It is still a school
play, but a school play with
a big enough budget to
show lots of action
setpieces, and I daresay
we'd all be okay with that.
Surjya Sen's fundamental
masterstroke, that of using
teenagers, is a scandalous
choice, and one that can
rightfully kick off, as the
nation seems fond of
saying this week, 'a larger
ethical debate.' Is it right
for a schoolteacher to
incite young minds and
involve minors in a
revolution? He fought for
freedom, but who draws
that line for an easily-
impassioned child? Is it
okay to put them fatally in
the line of fire just because
the children themselves
agree? And who decides
how old is old enough?
These are loaded questions
and one doesn't expect this
film to answer them, but a
film on the subject needs
to explore the children's
psyche, see what is going
through their mind. They
are the story, and this film
cruelly sidesteps their
innards.
In the second half, as the
young revolutionaries are
scurrying for cover and
shuffling into position, they
respond to military
commands just like their
adversaries. 'Company, fall
in line' has the same effect
on the kids as it does their
bulldog-moustached
British adversaries, and it
would have had a far
greater effect on us if we'd
have seen the senior
anarchists teach their
teenaged charges these,
seeing them make the
decision to follow the
opposition's process to
match them. Instead, we
are treated to repeated
scenes of boys lifting
barbells.
The boys themselves aren't
bad, though there aren't
any standout performers.
Among the revolutionaries
leading the charge is
Ganesh Ghosh, played by
Samrat, a stout-necked
slab of muscle who, in the
film's finest performance,
brings both credibility and
craft to the table. Vishakha
Singh does very well as
Pritilata Waddedar, the
film's heroine who handles
not just romance and loss,
but also defiant
martyrdom. It was also
most refreshing to see Rishi
Sethi pop up for a scene,
the veteran bit-actor -- and
Prakash Mehra's [ Images ]
onetime assistant -- who
hung around so many
Bachchan-Mehra films,
from Zanjeer [ Images ] to
Namak Halaal [ Images ] to
Kaalia.
Abhishek Bachchan [
Images ], however, is
woefully miscast in the
film's leading role. Content
to oscillate between a
'thoughtful' furrowed-
brow look and a creepy
smile in the first half, the
second sees him scurrying
for instruction from his
colleagues and hardly ever
assuming control. This is
not an inspiring leader of
men or boys -- like Aamir
Khan [ Images ] in Lagaan [
Images ] or Rang De
Basanti, or Ajay Devgn [
Images ] in The Legend Of
Bhagat Singh -- but instead
just another one of the lot.
Shreyas Pandit as the
bespectacled but
unflinching Ambikada,
Samrat's Ganesh or even
Maninder's Anant Singh...
all have take-charge
moments better than the
hero, and history suggests
Surjya deserved better. It is
also rather disconcerting to
see the actor unable to say
Bengali names with the
right inflection, his
climactic struggles with the
name Kolpona ('Call-
punna', he wheezes)
especially laughable. His
Bengali mother must be
mortified. Abhishek might
have the most loaded last
name in Hindi cinema, but
clearly it takes more than
that to pull off a Sen.

Director Ram Gopal Varma
is very much interested in
sensationalism. Even before
the release of the film, for
that matter even when the
film is on sets, he created a
big hype about the film
Rakta Charitra and made
everyone believe that it is
the life history of Paritala
Ravi, one of the strong
politician of Telugu Desam,
who was murdered. But in
reality, the film is nothing,
but a revenge drama and

Review
Story
Noted MLA Narasimha
Reddy (Kitty) has got a
trusted aide in the form of
Veerabhadriah (Rajendra
Gupta) in Anandapuram
area.
However, Narasimha’s
relative Nagamani Reddy
(Kota) is unable to take
this for reasons of caste
and losing his presence. He
plants a seed of friction
and in no time, Narasimha
Reddy gets Veerabhadriah
killed. This enrages
Veerabhadriah ’s elder son
Shankar Ravi (Sushant) and
he gets into a killing spree
and operates from forests.
Veerabhadriah’s younger
son Pratap Ravi (Vivek)
who is away from all this
gets to know of this and
before he realizes, Shankar
Ravi also gets killed. He
vows revenge on his father
and brother’s killers and in
this process, Narasimha
Reddy, Nagamani Reddy
and others are brutally
killed. Nagamani Reddy ’s
son Bukka Reddy
(Abhimanyu) who is insane
to the core is unable to
take this and he becomes
Pratap ’s main enemy.
Meanwhile, the rise of
Pratap as opposite force to
Bukka Reddy is noticed by
Shivaji Rao (Shatrughan)
who sets a new party and
he decides to lift Pratap to
put an end to Bukka
Reddy. What happens after
that forms the rest of the
story.
Artists Performance:
Vivek Oberoi is an apt
choice, his eyes deliver the
sufficient emotion of
revenge and his body
language is intense. He has
done full justice to his role.
Abhimanyu Singh is a
complete show stealer. His
menacing looks and his
cold blooded performance
will give some spine chilling
moments.
Shatrughan Sinha was
contained and it must be
said that traces of real life
N T Rama Rao are quite
prominent in his gestures
and dialogue delivery.
Kota was perfect, Radhika
was naturally appealing,
Zarina was neat, Tanikella
was impressive and he
made his presence felt,
Rajendra Gupta was
adequate, Sushant was
brief, Ashish Vidyarthi was
alright, Subhalekha
Sudhakar was standard,
Subrat Dutta was good, the
others did their bit as
required and added value.
Highlights:
Symbolism shots with
respect to showing a cycle
in Shivaji Rao (Shatrugan
Sinha) ’s place (recalling
TDP and NTR), usage of left
had, addressing as ‘brother'
are impressive.
Showing a dog barking
after the death of Naga
Mani Reddy (Kota) depicts
‘ kukka chaavu'..That’s
impressive.
Ram Moorthy (Tanikella)
saying to Pratap Ravi ‘to
shave beard as a politician
should look clean at face
although dirty at heart'
Bukka Reddy’s introduction
scene
Disappointments:
RGV’s voice over is
overflowing. It’s not a radio
drama to explain
everything with a voice
over. Whatever RGV is
saying in voice, is being
conveyed visually! It
disturbed the mood to
some extent.
Pratap Ravi stays in forest
as per the dialogue. But he
stays in a dusty hill area
that hardly looks like a
forest. It may sound trivial,
but when such
observations linger in mind,
some audience gets
distracted from the mood.
Why Dabbunnoda song?
The context is not
convincing.
Challenges:
The subject chosen is quite
hard hitting so one needs
to have some background
information before actually
connecting to the film.
Facing criticism with respect
to Shivai Rao ’s (a replica of
NTR) characterization and
converting it into publicity
element.
Facing criticism and
questions with respect to
‘ pedda sir' (implying YSR)
and again converting it into
a publicity element
Mood is suddenly dropping
down at the conclusion
point of the movie. Waiting
till Part-2 to get
completeness in feeling is a
challenge for audience and
it’s challenge for maker to
sustain interest for 1
month till Part-2 release.
Final Analysis:
“Goodness or badness can
never be anyone’s property.
They are situational.
If a man is hunger free, he
showers only goodness. But
if any sort of hunger (be it
lust, power craving or
greed or vengeance) hits
him, he spells badness'.
Rakta Charitra is a fiction
based on historical facts.
It ’s rather powerful to say
that it’s a true depiction of
human emotions.
It ’s a tour to extreme
human beings.
Ramayan or Mahabharat or
any chronicled history in
dramatic form depicts the
extremities of emotions in
every character. For
example if Karna is known
for generosity, its shown
with eccentricity of
chopping off his own
armored skin to offer for a
beggar. If Bheeshma is
known for sacrifice, its
shown in extreme point of
choosing life time celibacy
to keep himself and his
legacy far from kingship.
Any drama holds grip only
when the characterizations
are strong. This fact was
known for dramatists right
from Veda Vyasa and
Valmiki. Similar path is now
chosen by Ram Gopal
Varma is depicting a
historical fact in dramatic
form. Telugu Movie
Reviews
He has shown Bukka Reddy
as a determined rapist (!)
and dedicated murderer (!)
.The incidents canned
around this
characterization are
extreme in imagination.
Pratap Ravi is shown as a
bad guy, but for a true
reason (since he is chosen
to be the hero of the plot).
Ram Gopal Varma is a
master of movie making
and an expert storyteller.
This is seen here yet again.
As such, the storyline can
be understood in few
words and there is nothing
unpredictable about it but
then it is the way Ramu
takes off with each scene
and how he gets the viewer
into the film which counts.
His screenplay techniques
and shot compositions are
one of those dexterities he
possesses. Perhaps a
layman might find the
visual appeal to be dim but
then there are few flashes
of his brilliance which are
seen on and off. The focus
was more on the emotion
of the protagonist and the
villain so that is a challenge
to handle for more than
two hours.
On the other hand, it is not
a typical Varma
characterization where
most of the actors give
hard expressions, talk less
and convey more. Here the
characters speak sufficient
and sometimes little
verbose!! But still there is a
rhythm in their
performance and it
connects to the regular
audience.
On a whole it’s a movie
about the raise of a
leader.

In a recent interview, Ram
Gopal Varma emphatically
declared that Rakta
Charitra is not for women.
He said: ‘They can sit at
home.’ As I endured the
incessant violence of the
movie — sickles slitting
throats, a drill boring into
a skull, limbs being hacked
and countless women
being abducted and raped
— I wondered if I should
have taken Varma’s advice
and just stayed at home.
Rakta Charitra is a bio-pic
of Paritala Ravi, a
politician from Andhra
Pradesh, played here by
Vivek Oberoi, whose
career began with murder
and ended when he was
assassinated in broad
daylight by his rivals.
This film is part one of this
horrifically fascinating
story, which illustrates the
heart of darkness that
constitutes politics in India.
The murderous saga of
revenge and counter-
revenge begins with
momentum but then gets
bogged down by its
repetitive mayhem, an
annoying voice-over and
exhausting decibel levels.
Varma isn ’t one for
subtlety.
The sound-track is blaring
and despite the rivers of
blood that flow freely,
every character feels the
need to say rakta as often
as he can.
The director has little
interest in the psychology
and evolution of his
characters so Pratap goes
from college to killing
without batting an eye-lid
and then, with the same
ease, moves from outlaw
to minister. Instead what
seems to fascinate Varma
is extreme behaviour.
As Karan Johar revels in
beauty, Varma revels in
ugliness. So he spends an
inordinate amount of time
on exploring the ways in
which people can hurt
each other and his
depiction of depravity
feels uncomfortably
voyeuristic.
And of course like earlier
Varma films, this one too
features a gallery of
singularly unattractive
faces shot at peculiar
angles and the requisite
sweaty celebration song.
There are some powerful
moments and strong
performances here —
Abhimanyu Singh as an
unhinged goon is
especially good. Oberoi
also shows flashes of
prowess and the real
discovery is the surprisingly
sober and effective
Shatrughan Sinha. But
how much you relish
Rakta Charitra is directly
connected to your
threshold for gore.
If like me, it’s low, I
suggest you take Varma’s
advice and sit at home.

MOIL IPO ALLOTMENT

While the Institutional part
of the Is MOIL IPO is fully
subscribed, the retail s
unenthusiastic. The issues
has not even been able to
garner one third of the
allotments. This is in spite
the fact that retail investors
and employees of MOIL
will get a 5% discount to
the issue price. Normally,
its said that the
institutional investors come
in last moment as they do
not want to lock in funds.
Now its been said that the
retail will come in last date
to book as they do not
want to lock in the funds.
This has to be watched
since, there is time till Dec
1 for the retail investors to
move in. Coal India Limited
did not have such issues.
Institutional investors have
Nov 30 as their last date.
SEBI’s tampering with the
distribution system has
resulted in major
investment losses
throughout the decade.
Will MOIL need a rescue?
LIC of India, the usual
rescuer is already in news
for its LIC Housing Finance
scam. LIC’s investment
decisions, which are non
transparent is also under
the question.

Nayak, Shikha Sharma was
named as the bank's
managing director and CEO
on 20 April 2009.[3]
As on the year ended 31
March 2009 the Bank had a
total income of 13,745.04
crore (US$ 3.12 billion) and
a net profit of 1,812.93
crore (US$ 411.54 million).
On 24 February 2010, Axis
Bank announced the
launch of 'AXIS CALL & PAY
on atom', a unique mobile
payments solution using
Axis Bank debit cards. Axis
Bank is the first bank in the
country to provide a secure
debit card-based payment
service over IVR.[4]

2010).The Bank has a

The Bank has loans now (as
of June 2007) account for
as much as 70 per cent of
the bank ’s total loan book
of Rs 2,00,000 crore. For
HDFC Bank, retail assets are
around 57 per cent (Rs
28,000 crore) of the total
loans as of March 2007.
In the case of Axis Bank,
retail loans have declined
from 30 per cent of the
total loan book of Rs
25,800 crore in June 2006
to around 23 per cent of
loan book of Rs.41,280
crore (as of June 2007).
Even over a longer period,
while the overall asset
growth for Axis Bank has
been quite high and has
matched that of the other
banks, retail exposures
grew at a slower pace.
If the sharp decline in the
retail asset book in the past
year in the case of Axis
Bank is part of a deliberate
business strategy, this could
have significant
implications (not
necessarily negative) for
the overall future
profitability of the business.
Despite the slower growth
of the retail book over a
period of time and the
outright decline seen in the
past year, the bank ’s
fundamentals are quite
resilient. With the high
level of mid-corporate and
wholesale corporate
lending the bank has been
doing, one would have
expected the net interest
margins to have been
under greater pressure. The
bank, though, appears to
have insulated such
pressures. Interest margins,
while they have declined
from the 3.15 per cent seen
in 2003-04, are still
hovering close to the 3 per
cent mark. (The
comparable margins for
ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank
are around 2.60 per cent
and 4 per cent respectively.
The margins for ICICI Bank
are lower despite its much
larger share of the higher
margin retail business, since
funding costs also are
higher).
The Bank today is
capitalized to the extent of
Rs. 408.84 crores with the
public holding (other than
promoters and GDRs) at
53.81%.
AxisRemit Online
This is a convenient and
secure portal for NRIs to
remit money to India,
generally required for
maintenance of their
relatives. It is a growing
revenue stream for the
bank, with more and more
NRIs registering to avail of
the highly competitive
exchange rates and
convenient online facility.
