Will We Be “Growing” Organic Furniture In The Future?

Some organically-shaped furniture pieces manage to capture the inspiration seen all around us in a modern design – this helps compose interiors with a fascinating arrangement. For example, the Mutation Series by Belgian designer Maarten De Ceulaer express the need for nature-inspired design in modern homes. Wanting to show a possible future for furniture items, the unusual-looking series explores the future possibility of growing organic furniture, similar to cloning animals.

Another explanation given by the designer includes experimenting with classic upholstery: “ It reminds us of the famous and iconic deep buttoned (Chesterfield) sofa’s, interpreted in a highly contemporary and sculptural way. Instead of upholstering springs and foam with leather or textile, these pieces are created by carefully composing patterns with cut-offs of foam spheres of various sizes, and applying them onto a structure. In the end the entire piece gets coated, with a durable rubber or tactile velvet-like finish. It is hardly impossible to ever recreate such a specific pattern, so every piece is completely unique.” Chairs, armchairs, poufs and sofas part of the Mutation collection offer an alternative to modern furniture pieces, but does this design encourage you to see a different method of composing furniture items that would be suited for a contemporary lifestyle?

A Seed-Shaped Church on a Sacred Mountain in China

The O Studio Architects of Hong Kong just completed an elegantly curved concrete church in Huizhou, China.

The model shows the very unique shape of the building, a sculptural form that encourages a climb.

Bringing celebrants closer to the sky hints at a spiritual journey towards the heavens at Luofu Mountain Scenery District - one of the seven famous Taoist Mountains in China.

This is the first Christian church in a sacred mountain site with Taoist and Buddhist temples.

The inspirational architecture respects the natural environment and the more traditional local spiritual culture.

Spirituality is subtly suggested through the simple and elemental play of light and shadow.

The church has a shape like a seed – a metaphor much used in the New Testament.

But the reference to nature means that it is also minimally intrusive in a land not traditionally christian.

The main structure was molded by in-situ, in a sustainable building technique that is economical and practical for local builders.

Wooden formwork for pouring concrete in-situ imparts a texture. But in this church, instead of planks of wood from far away trees, local bamboo was used for formwork.

The bamboo texture left on the concrete surface by the bamboo form reduces the massiveness of the high concrete wall.

The unique bamboo pattern created makes a local reference to the surrounding trees and green landscape.

Local farmers built the handmade bamboo furniture. Like the religious furniture of Quaker carpenters, the effect is humble and close to village life.

Delicious Contrasts in the AS-House in Brazil

The prolific São Paulo-based studio Guilherme Torres – begun in 2001 – has created another lovely tropical modern masterpiece in the AS House in Cornélio Procópio, in the state of Paraná in Brazil.

The site naturally offered two stories to the house, both located around the patio and pool…

…because the steepness of the site made it possible to embed the house into the slope – like an uncovered box, inside walls 7.5 meters high.

The cool and refreshing patio has no garden, just palm trees around the pool.

The high walls keep the family’s privacy and security from the busy streets of this small city in south Brazil.

The bedrooms (kept from our view) use a signature dark, rich, rustic wood, creating a contrast in texture, like the upstairs shutters seen here.

The same rich cumaru wood is used throughout.

Guilherme is always investigating the limits of the materials that he works with in his projects, in which rustic elements contrast with absolute white.

White cement is used in all the public areas of the 6,080 square foot contemporary home.

The furniture is hugely oversized for large dinner parties – a 7 meter (21 ft) long table and a 10 meters (30 ft) long sofa.

The architect, who acquired his technical language early, by working in an architectural office as a teenager, also does furniture design.

His architecture is in some ways more like a gallery in which to showcase furniture – focused on the contrast between black and white.

The motto he has tattooed on his arm: More. Better. Harder. Faster. creates a tension with his guiding principle – “Less is more.”

But the results are consistently interesting and elegant.

Design Dilemma: Is the Home Library Dead?

Have E-readers killed the home library? Years ago, it was every home dweller’s dream to own a quiet room filled with books and a big fat easy chair. Libraries suggested refinement, coziness and worldliness. They were also a place to escape the noise and chaos of everyday life. But these days, books are taking a back seat to electronics. More of us actually do our reading online and are building a “virtual” library of books.

Does this mean the death of the home library?

Most likely, yes and no. Yes, we may find fewer and fewer dedicated rooms to libraries and reading. But in truth, only the very wealthy could afford to set aside a room entirely for that purpose anyway. So we’ll probably see fewer separate rooms, but we’ll still collect a few special books (most likely reference and art books that don’t work well in the ereader format ) to become a part of a much smaller library, somewhere in our homes. Our libraries are likely to go from this:

In other words, spots for books that exist as part of a multifunctional space given to other activities, such as socializing and eating. In fact, it’s virtually guaranteed that as more of us seek out open space floor plans and buy more books online, our home libraries will become just a few odd bookshelves tucked away in some corner of our larger spaces. Or perhaps we will make the few books we have a centerpiece of our home decor.

If you’re still hankering for a library somewhere at home, here are a few ideas:

1) Set up a reading corner. A comfortable chair and a good reading lamp are imperative. Your corner can be in any spot you choose —- perhaps a corner of your livingroom, but also your bedroom, a hallway, a sunroom or even in the dining room. If you’re a serious reader, seek out more serene corners of your home. Something like this:

2) Pair books and art together. As the actual number of books in our libraries shrink, it’s nevertheless a great opportunity to show off another collection —- your art collection! Check out the first photo of this post, in which artwork is hung over books on a bookcase. Or, maybe something like this:

3) Finally, why not set off your book collection as a bit of art in itself? No, we’re not talking about organizing books by the color of their binders (that always seemed kind of forced to us). Instead, why not highlight your library by painting your bookshelves an interesting color. Something like this:

4) Books can take the visual weight off your TV. One way to have your library serve a double purpose is to use it to soften the visual impact of a TV. A TV, by itself, hung on a wall or over a fireplace can instantly suck all the life out of a room. One way to bring the life back is to surround that TV by books — your home library — so that the TV recedes in importance. Here’s a perfect example:

Glimpse of a Strange, Repurposed Future World

Here’s a strange vision. As if a thoughtful post-apocalyptic nomad has somehow dug up an ancient library and used it to create a semi-outdoor home in the ruins of the 21st century.

Here, another solitary soul has apparently made a comfortable home in the ruins of a clocktower, now open to the birds and breezes, and scrounged up other timepieces, as if slowly following a clue.

A natural archeologist of sorts.

What kind of people are these, now moved into the ruins of our civilization, seemingly settled among the disparate collection of artifacts of the past, as if they gathered them from wreckage they no longer understood, and without knowing their purpose.

Here, apparently without any human agency, the glass rotunda of a botanical garden has burst? broken? allowing the tropical plants within to run wild, seemingly comfortable in what is perhaps the thick turgid air of a new and warmer earth.

Here a mall exists in a quiet future, devoid of commercial activity, but tropical green life is flourishing.

The detritus of our times lives on, but it has now gained the mystery of any long ago civilization’s artifacts. Outside, lush overgrowth is run wild.

It is not clear what happened here, but the future inhabitants of the leftovers of centuries of our architecture do seem to be oddly at peace with it all.

Artist Lori Mix created these extremely personal, and strangely balmy and peaceful images of a post-apocalyptic future, constructing them as small dioramas and then photographing the results.

Design Dilemma: Part 2, Downsizing While Staying Put

Last week, we explored ways to downsize when moving from a large space into a smaller one. It’s a tough move to make, but can be filled with rewards, including more time and money available to spend outside the home, less cleaning and lower utility costs. This week, we thought we’d spend some time on how you can downsize without going anywhere at all.

1) Start with a journal. Ask yourself these questions: If you were starting over in a home, what would you do differently? Buy less stuff? Eliminate a rarely-used guest room? Opt for an open floor plan instead of a separate dining room? Asking and answering these questions may help you pinpoint where and how you can streamline your home.

2) Use your routines as a guide. For instance, if you use your dining room table as a desk more often than a dining table, then you need a study or office space, but not necessarily a dining room. Or if you have a guestroom but rarely, if ever, have guests, perhaps your guestroom would better serve as a dedicated study (with a pull-out couch for the occasional guest.) Below, check out a guestroom reconfigured so that an unused closet becomes a desk/study space.

3) Adjust or revamp your space according to your routines. If you never have formal dinners, it may make more sense to turn your dining room into a study or den. If you never have guests but do yoga every day, it may make more sense to turn a guestroom into an exercise/guestroom. Think multifunctional. And if most of your day is spent in just one or two zones of your house (lets say kitchen, dining and family room) maybe it makes sense to open up a few walls to create an inviting communicative environment.

4) Eliminate furniture, objects and collections according to your routines. Once you have identified ways in which your home could better meet your needs, eliminate or consolidate unnecessary spaces. As you do so, you can also begin to eliminate objects that are no longer serving your life. For example, in the rarely used dining room, you might decide to keep the dining room table which can double as a desk, but to eliminate a buffet or hutch that holds plates and silverware that is never used. You can sell or donate those housewares. Instead, you might move bookshelves into your space which can operate as both a dining room and study.

5) Pay special attention to areas where clutter builds. When it comes to clutter, most of us tend to let things pile up in a few key areas: clothes and closets, papers and documents, books and collections, kitchen implements and gadgetry. Take a day to dedicate yourself to each of these areas. On Monday, go through your closets and plan to donate any clothing that hasn’t been worn in a year, that you don’t like, or that no longer fits. Be rigorous. If you are unsure about something, put it in a special “maybe” box. If you haven’t touched or needed the item within the next month or two, then donate the box to charity. On Tuesday, go through your book shelves. Many people decide to hold onto reference or art books but let go of paperback novels, which tend to pile up more quickly and which are often read only once. Keep only those books that truly hold a special meaning for you. Take your books to a used bookstore or donate them to the public library. On Wednesday, spend the day going through your kitchen cabinets. Eliminate items that are redundant along with never-used gadgets and plastic containers that tend to build up. Likewise, spend a day in your bathroom, in the garage, in your basement, and clear out the unused and disliked items. Donate everything, so you feel no guilt about letting stuff go.

6) Resist the temptation to fill up again. When spaces are empty, we have a tendency to want to fill them up again. In order to enjoy your new downsized state, learn how to enjoy space for itself. Every corner need not be filled. When you are tempted buy new items make yourself wait a week or two before you actually make the purchase. Consider whether you really need the item and remember how much trouble it has been to let go of items collected over the decades.

Guilherme Torres’ Very Hip and Cool São Paulo Studio

Fascinated by the hip Jardins neighborhood location, São Paulo-based studio Guilherme Torres created this live/work studio conversion project in Brazil.

The young Brazilian architect shows how a compact, practical and straightforward 130 square meter live work studio can be very masculine, elegant and cool.

The warm golden brown of the architect’s trademark wooden screens was used throughout the remodel, offsetting the white plaster and the gray concrete of the floors. Some of the gypsum board walls were painted white and others reproduced the texture of the cement.

Behind the studio, the kitchen extends out to an inviting al-fresco dining courtyard.

The open courtyard is at the back of the industrial building, with a two story atrium.

The outdoor food prep makes the lunch break a time for enjoyment of nature.

A roomy food prep surface extends naturally from cooking to eating.

The drama of deep shadows continue to minimal spaces underneath a second floor access to this atrium, that houses an outdoor bathroom.

A gorgeous open-air bathroom on the mezzanine above the atrium courtyard allows al-fresco bathing on summer days, through a retractable glass roof above the screen.

The sun’s rays are filtered by the trademark wooden screen.

The bedroom overlooks this outdoor bathing area. New wall openings were cut to move light around.

The architect shows how rational and elegant a straightforward masculine studio design can be.

Each pavilion recalls the grace of traditional Lanna style, built from reclaimed and recycled teak wood.

The somnolent splendor of the grounds adds a bewitching presence, as if in a dream.

The resort is set in four acres of verdant tropical gardens, rippling streams and water gardens.

Teakwood floors and large area rugs ground the interior design, hearkening back to an era of grace and elegance.

The resort is separated into seven main pavilions for living, dining, master bedroom suites, a studio and some private guest pavilions.

Each pavilion is embellished with decorative doors and shutters that recall the ornate and intricate carvings of the Lanna era.

The stunning setting is cradled on a handsome land plot of four acres, located in Chiang Mai in the foothills of the Himalayas.

An artistic pathway that makes an ever-so-subtle reference to a dragon winds peacefully through the delightful garden.

The landscape rich is with natural streams, boulders, and a diverse array of tropical flora and plant life, sculptures and lit pathways.

The stillness of nature experienced directly is interwoven into a place conceived and designed to become a personal sanctuary.

Overall, the accumulated effect of the enchanting grounds and the unique furnishings and the interplay of subtle colors and tones of the fabled pavillions create a mysterious space that seems to dream forever in the past.

Old Sydney’s Curtained Glass Loggia House

In keeping with its elevated past, the high ceilings in this two story extension are dwarfed by two-story steel mesh curtains shielded from the weather by a soaring glass roof.

The double-height curtain of the Glass Loggia House, the winner of two HOUSES Magazine awards for design excellence, provides shade and privacy and a connection to the remodelled garden.

Australian architects Allen Jack+Cottier converted the High Victorian house, as part of a collaboration.

“The loggia and new rooms are designed to exploit the ambiguities between what is inside and what is outside with a dramatic external steel mesh curtain shading the whole north- west facade, which operates to transform the loggia and garden spaces for different family functions.”

In order to show the curtained building to the most interesting effect, garden designer Vladimir Sitta reworked the massing of the hedges and lawns in the sub-tropical Sydney garden.

Because the retrofit was of a historic Sydney house, designer Belinda Koopman remained sensitive to the “bones.”

The judges said: “The approach of both the landscape architect and architect respects the remnants of the past, adding another layer to history. Through a suite of new spaces the house and garden is now more engaged with the people who live there.”

The group transformed the dark rear living spaces and run down garden of a grand two storey High Victorian style residence, creating a useable outdoor area in a way that responds to the grand scale of the existing building, and was appropriate to the conservation area.

The walls, rooms, corridors, platforms, and curtains create a palpable ambiguity about what is inside and outside, old and new.

Internally, the spaces are sensitive to the historic past too, while being modern, open and airy.

The added space is not large. But it perfectly continues the grand tradition of the original.

Private and Public Residential Spaces Bonded With Nature

Rising two stories in the air, the Mary Lake Residence in the Village of Port Sydney, Huntsville, Ontario welcomes owners with a body made out of two separate volumes connected by a glazed entrance on the first floor and almost transparent second floor staircase and corridor uniting the upstairs spaces. Surrounded by tall white pines, this creation of Toronto-based studio Altius Architecture was described by them as follows: “The roof of the living room is sheltered between the two solids and becomes an additional outdoor space with a view over the lake, a garden and a hot tub.

The home is a balance of program spaces, with the public entertaining spaces of the living room, dining room and kitchen wrapping one side of the central void and the more private and intimate spaces of the library and den situated at the other. Two stone walls shield the house from the road while a canopy reaches out to create a welcoming entry. Warm yet contemporary materials throughout create a cozy yet light atmosphere.” This 3,000 square foot home boasts a set of sustainable features like passive solar heating, radiant heating, low energy lighting and appliances, and natural ventilation and lighting coming from sliding doors and cleverly placed windows. Green roofs extend nature’s expansion around and on the residence, while the indoor/outdoor connection draws it inside, creating a strong bond between natural and man-made.

Unusually Shaped Modern Dwelling Flaunting Flexibility

Designed for a young family of four, Haus W encompasses a flexible design, prepared to evolve together with the family and offer them a dream setting for everyday life. Pott Architects, with offices in Berlin, are the ones behind this project. They built the 3,000 square foot house located in the Lichterfelde district of Berlin, Germany, in the garden of an old villa, but accessed via its own road. Appearing as a single volume residence, Haus W’s interiors are separated by walls and sliding doors creating the choice of enjoying time alone or in the company of friends and family.

With a sunken entrance flanked by a spacious foyer with a cloakroom and service areas, the residence has a beautiful layout. Following the contours of the property, the modern living, dining and cooking spaces were placed on the first level. The next split level floor is occupied by the living room and private parents’ room, while the upper floor shelters the kids bedrooms and play area. Described by its owners as a “house that’s like a holiday”, the carefully planned contemporary residence is dressed in a dark copper shell pierced by windows capturing natural light and views of the garden. Light Beam Art, Based on the Principles of Camera Obscura

Artist Chris Fraser takes old physics discoveries and turn them into contemporary art. By applying the laws of Camera Obscura, a dark box (or room) with a hole drilled in one side, projected an image from the exterior, turned upside down, the artist plays with light, with intriguing results: â€œIt is both utterly remarkable and terribly ordinary. But there is no need to stop with one opening. Bore a second hole into the wall and two images, offset but roughly similar, will appear. Continue to drill. Remove the wall piecemeal, minding each change. Picture will stack atop picture, dissolving eventually into the mere impression of light.â€ Chris Fraser further explains, in an interview for Co.Design: â€œI had regarded my house as a living camera. I would watch pictures of the sun move across the living room floor over the course of a day, and notice how its path would change with the season“. Updated Oscar Niemeyer Apartment Where Social Meets Private

Architects Felipe Hess and Renata Pedrosa updated this 140 square meter apartment originally designed by Oscar Niemeyer and the result is fabulous. Named Copan Apartment and located in Sao Paolo, Brazil, the contemporary residential space was demolished to the point of an open, fluid space, adorned with remaining columns and shafts. A core volume was built, dividing the private rooms from the social ones and sheltering closets on the private side and a concrete set of details on the social side. Part of the exposed common space, this concrete divider holds the client’s prizes and memorabilia, giving the apartment a very private, inviting feel. The kitchen is defined by a central block acting as a kitchen island/dining table, while the columns compose a visual connection to the rest of the room. Exposed concrete walls and original ceiling beams were paired up with large steel dividers offering the possibility of opening or closing the private bedroom.
