Adem Yavuz Arslan has a general idea of when the surveillance started.
The Fairfax, Va. community swimming pool where the exiled Turkish journalist takes his children closed for the summer on Aug. 30, and it was just before then that a covert photographer snapped pictures that ended up being published in Sabah, a Turkish newspaper that is effectively controlled by Turkey’s authoritarian president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Aydogan Vatandas, also a journalist from Turkey, knows the exact time he was spied upon: Sept. 16 at 11:30 a.m. outside of a bookstore in Clifton, N.J.
Arslan and Vatandas are two of six U.S.-based journalists born in Turkey who talked to The Daily Caller about being surveilled. All found their pictures blasted across Turkish media outlets in late September. Most of the photos, and some videos, were posted at various pro-government news outlets, including Sabah, which is controlled by Serhat Albayrak, the brother of Berat Albayrak, Turkey’s energy minister and Erdogan’s son-in-law.

Traditional news organizations made a deal with the devil when they turned to social media and search engine optimization to gain digital audience and revenue.
They recruited "community managers" to raise their profile on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the like. They tagged their articles to raise them in search results.

The devilish side of the deal was that presumably ethical news media were trying to sell credibility and verified information — facts — within a turbulent ocean of emotion. On social media, feelings are more important than facts. People want to declare who they are and what they believe. So they "like" and share stuff that reinforces their view of who they are and what they agree with. Emotions predominate over facts.
Articles that are popular, shared and linked to will rise to the top of search results in Google and other search engines. It's easy to share or like something that reinforces your view of who you are.
Misreading the data
The post-election idea now being championed by many journalists that Facebook and other social media should be fact-checked, and that fake news stories could be eliminated from social media shows they misunderstand the new media dynamics.
Craig Silverman, an investigative journalist who specializes in how to verify information on the internet, wrote how fake news outperformed real news on Facebook during the last three months of the election campaign.
Lots of media colleagues have been arguing that fake news helped Trump win the election. But they are confusing the symptom with the disease.
The rise of fake news has more to do with the declining relevance of traditional news media, both as businesses (Google and Facebook have taken all their advertising revenue) and as credible sources of information.
Media types like me (my paid subscriptions: New York Times, Wall Street Journal, New Yorker, The Economist) saw our views reflected in those publications. What we ignored is that these kinds of print media are no longer as trusted by the public at large. People don't care what The New York Times says.
In a poll by the Reuters Institute, people in 26 countries were asked to respond to the statement that "you can trust most of the news most of the time.” The percent who agreed was highest in Finland, with 65 percent, and Greece was lowest with 20 percent. In between were Germany 52 percent, U.K. 50 percent, Spain 47 percent, Japan 43 percent, and the U.S. 33 percent.
Given this level of distrust, we should question the idea put forth by journalists in the U.K. and the U.S. that a blizzard of "certified" facts from traditional news organizations about Brexit or Hillary or Donald would have changed anyone's mind in the voting booth. What's more, identifying the truth is complicated, as The Guardian's John Naughton has pointed out.
Media of the people
Media empires have been built on the notion that people want to be thrilled, entertained and made to feel good about themselves rather than being educated.
In August, John Herrman of The New York Times published an article that demonstrated the irrelevance of traditional news media and their focus on issues and facts. Herrman showed how media that exist only on Facebook had been influencing discourse about the political campaign, with advocacy from the left and the right.
“These are news sources that essentially do not exist outside of Facebook, and you’ve probably never heard of them,” he wrote. “They have names like Occupy Democrats; The Angry Patriot; US Chronicle; Addicting Info; RightAlerts; Being Liberal; Opposing Views; Fed-Up Americans; American News; and hundreds more.”
It was in that space that people were talking with their friends and deciding who to vote for. Polls and traditional media missed this conversation or underestimated its importance.
Journalism's response
Journalism professor Jeff Jarvis and John Borthwick came up with some suggestions for how Facebook and other social platforms should handle fake news. Among them was cutting off advertising revenue to obviously fake sites. Margaret Sullivan of The Washington Post is urging Facebook to hire an executive editor to police the traffic. Jim Rutenberg, media columnist for The New York Times, argued that if there is not an aggressive effort to counter fake news, it will drown out facts.
Evidence for optimism: Traditional media still matter
The Reuters Institute study mentioned above, which was completed before the Brexit vote and the U.S. presidential election, offered a more sanguine view of credibility of traditional media. "Our research suggests that even in the era of social media and atomized media, news organizations and traditional news brands still matter enormously."
It went on: "Although aggregators and social media are important gateways to news, most of the content consumed still comes from newspaper groups, broadcasters or digital born brands that have invested in original content. Across all of our 26 countries over two-thirds of our sample (69 percent) access a newspaper brand online each week, with almost as many (62 percent) accessing the online service of a broadcasting outlet."

2 weeks ago, Google started the mobile-first indexing of the Web. We do not tolerate harassment of event participants in any form. Google takes violations of our policy seriously and will respond appropriately.

All participants of Google events must abide by the following policy:

Participate while acknowledging that everyone deserves to be here — and each of us has the right to enjoy our experience without fear of harassment, discrimination, or condescension, whether blatant or via micro-aggressions. Jokes shouldn’t demean others. Consider what you are saying and how it would feel if it were said to or about you.

Speak up if you see or hear something. Harassment is not tolerated, and you are empowered to politely engage when you or others are disrespected. The person making you feel uncomfortable may not be aware of what they are doing, and politely bringing their behavior to their attention is encouraged.

Practice saying "Yes and" to each other. It’s a theatre improv technique to build on each other’s ideas. Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately. Our zero tolerance policy means that we will look into and review every allegation of violation of our Event Community Guidelines and Anti-Harassment Policy and respond appropriately. We empower and encourage you to report any behavior that makes you or others feel uncomfortable by finding a Google staff member wearing a navy blue event shirt or by emailing chrome-dev-summit@google.com.

Event staff will be happy to help participants contact hotel/venue security or local law enforcement, provide escorts, or otherwise assist those experiencing discomfort or harassment to feel safe for the duration of the event. We value your attendance.

This policy extends to talks, forums, workshops, codelabs, social media, parties, hallway conversations, all attendees, partners, sponsors, volunteers, event staff, etc. You catch our drift. Google reserves the right to refuse admittance to, or remove any person from, any Google hosted event (including future Google events) at any time in its sole discretion. This includes, but is not limited to, attendees behaving in a disorderly manner or failing to comply with this policy, and the terms and conditions herein. If a participant engages in harassing or uncomfortable behavior, the conference organizers may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning or expelling the offender from the conference with no refund.

By Alex Thompson on Nov 1, 2016
When the tea party movement came to prominence in the summer of 2009, adherents proclaimed they were guided by conservative principles forgotten in the big-spending years of George W. Bush. Republicans who didn’t adhere to their strict ideological interpretation of the Constitution were labeled RINOs (Republicans in name only). The tea partiers’ stubborn demands and obstructionism so exasperated President Obama in 2011 that he snapped, “Can they say yes to anything?”
In 2016 after a divisive GOP primary, the tea party vote has unified behindnominee Donald Trump, even though he in many ways defies the ideological purity that once defined the movement. But Trump and his big-government populism isn’t just winning their votes; he’s also winning their donations, a sign that the money behind the movement will remain a force in American politics long after Election Day.

A new analysis provided exclusively to VICE News confirms that since Trump began soliciting donations in May, tea party donors have been propelling his campaign. According to Crowdpac, a nonpartisan political crowdfunding startup, more than 6,400 of Trump’s financial backers previously gave to one of the six main tea party PACs since 2009, more than any other candidate in the race including Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a favorite of the movement.
Since Trump was initially self-funding his campaign, he did not start raising money until nearly a year after declaring his candidacy. Despite the late start, Trump has raised more money overall from more tea party donors than any other candidate. Over 20 percent of donors to the tea party PACs have given to Trump, pouring $8.3 million into his campaign through the end of September, besting his 2016 rivals.
Trump’s financial backers are also the most partisan major-party donors in recent history. Crowdpac quantifies where the candidate falls along the ideological spectrum by sorting through the donors’ past political-giving practices. If a candidate mostly receives donations from people who give money to both parties, the candidate’s score will reflect a moderate ideology (about a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10).
Most presidential candidates expand their donor base after clinching the nomination, but Trump’s donor base has instead gone further to the right. On a 1-10 scale with 1 being most liberal and 10 being most conservative, Trump currently is at 8.3. By contrast, Ronald Reagan measured 7.3.
Based on the flow of campaign dollars, what mattered to the conservative movement in 2009 may no longer apply. The Tea Party has now officially become the Trump Party.
Trump’s ability to galvanize these grassroots donors extends beyond his own candidacy. Surveying all of the country’s congressional races, the candidate with donors most like Trump’s was Paul Nehlen, last summer’s conservative challenger to Speaker of the House Paul Ryan.
The money devoted to oust Ryan reflects how much Trump has changed the tea party. In 2010, Ryan was a rising star in the conservative movement, proposing an ambitious and controversial overhaul of the government program Medicare and repeatedly criticizing the Obama administration for the ballooning debt.
Now the tea party is supporting a candidate who says Medicare and Social Security should not be reformed or overhauled. Trump doesn’t specify how he would pay for his expensive policy proposals. When Trump and Ryan clashed this election year over everything from policy proposals to a video featuring Trump bragging about groping women, the grassroots often sided with Trump. At an event in his home state of Wisconsin, Ryan was booed for disinviting Trump after the video leaked to the press. And a crowd at a recent Trump rally in Green Bay chanted “Paul Ryan sucks.”
Given Trump’s takeover of the tea party, how will the GOP move forward after Election Day if he loses? A much-buzzed-about article in the conservative magazine Commentary in October laid out one path. “Republicans of all stripes must be made to acknowledge and accept that Trumpism is an experiment that failed,” Noah Rothman argued, adding, “Trumpism exists at odds with conservatism.” It would seem that many conservatives disagree.

A Vodafone customer claims he was told by a call centre worker to get off his 'dangerous' Galaxy Note 7 amid fears it would 'blow his head off'.
Dave Herron said he called his network provider to request a replacement handset after reading about the issues affecting the Note 7 smartphone.
Samsung has stopped production of the device for 'consumer safety' amid reports of the phone's batteries overheating and bursting into flames.

The decision to scrap the handset, seen as a serious rival to the iPhone 7, is expected to cost the company more than £13billion in lost sales.
However, customers also fear they will lose out with some reporting they are still being charged monthly by their provider despite not being able to use their handset.

Mr Herron told MailOnline he is still forking out £65 a month for his contract with Vodafone despite the fact he cannot use his Note 7 for fear of it catching alight.
He hit out at the network provider's handling of the situation, describing its customer service as 'worst abysmal and at best laughable'.
He said: 'I have spent over three hours on the phone trying to get an exchange.
'My first call to them this morning was despicable. I got through to the returns department and said I would like to return my phone because of the new issue which had arisen. The representative knew nothing of the issues which in itself is disgraceful.
'I tried to order a new phone but they said I had to wait a few days for their system to update. All Vodafone wanted to do was to blame Samsung.
'I acknowledged it was Samsung's fault but as my provider I wanted them to sort me a replacement handset from a different manufacturer, which they were refusing to do.'
He said he then became alarmed when he was told by the Vodafone call centre worker to get off his Galaxy Note 7 because his 'head would be blown off'.
He added: 'I was told to power down the handset and not use again. When I asked if they would still be charging my bill of £65 per month he advised they would. I was then asked if I was calling from my Note 7. I was and the operator then refused to speak to me any further in case he got injured by the imminent explosion.

Previously, we would often see a local filter applied to the local results that filtered out profiles that shared a similar phone number or domain.

For example, you might have a chiropractor office that has three separate listings for individual practitioners and then one listing for the practice itself. These separate profiles would all link to the same website and use the same phone number. Usually, only one or two of these would show up in the local results, and the others would be filtered.
This makes sense, as Google regularly filters duplicate content organically, and showing their users tons of results from the same company isn't necessarily what's best for users. When you are searching for a new dentist, do you really want to see the same office listed several times?
Since this update, we are seeing a lot of businesses filtered out due to the address of the business being the same as another listing in their same category (same type of business). Here is an example.
You search "personal injury attorney palmdale," and you get 16 results in the Local Finder. There are at least five listings using the address 1008 W Ave, Palmdale, CA, that are all personal injury attorneys. Currently, one is showing in the Local Finder and the other four are filtered:Stefyan Law Firm - showingDeVille Law Group Inc - filterediAccidentLawyer - filteredNadrich & Cohen - filteredWilshire Law Firm - filtered
Broland over on the Local Search Forum pointed out that you can see the filtered listings if you just slightly zoom in on the map in the Local Finder. When I do that for this query, I now get 61 results - and most of the filtered results I referenced above are now showing.
In another case I looked at, a business owner had two listings that were named differently, had different phone numbers, different websites and different addresses. We tracked his ranking daily and used a tracker by BrightLocal that also took screen shots of the search results every day.
Each day that one listing showed up, the other did not. They kept flipping back and forth but never appeared together at the same time.
At first, I was confused at the connection because their entire Name, Address, Phone number (NAP) profile was different. The client then explained that they are technically in the same building even though they have different addresses. The address varies based on which side of the street you come in on.
This information helped me confirm that Google is a bit more sophisticated than just looking at the address you enter in Google My Business (GMB).
(On that note, many have tried to escape the filter by simply adding a suite number. This has not worked on any case I've looked at.)
In another case, it got even crazier. There is a dentist I work with who owns two different practices. They are both on the same road but have completely different addresses and are not in the same building. They have different NAPs, different doctors, the sites aren't hosted together, and they are not claimed in the same Google account. The only connection is that he owns both, and technically, the parent company that owns both is what would be listed on their business license.
I've known for a while now that Google often asks for business licenses when business listings get suspended, but it seems now that Google really knows a lot more about who owns multiple companies in the same industry than I suspected.

In the case of this dentist, his two practices used to both rank in the 3-pack for various keywords. Currently, I cannot get them to trigger together. Based on what I type in, I get either one or the other.
Keep in mind, this filter is not the same as a penalty. Google isn't removing the listing or preventing it from ranking for anything at all. Instead, it works much like the organic filter, which picks the "best" and most relevant listing and filters others that are too similar.
I often see different listings ranking for different keywords, so while the law firm's listing ranks for "personal injury attorney," the individual lawyer's profile might rank instead for "motorcycle accident attorney" if it had more relevance (like reviews that talk about motorcycle accidents).

When Allo was announced at Google’s I/O conference earlier this year, the messaging app was presented as a step forward for privacy. Alongside the end-to-end-encrypted Incognito Mode, the Allo team talked about bold new message retention practices, storing messages only transiently rather than indefinitely.

But with the release of the app today, Google is backing off on some of those features.
The version of Allo rolling out today will store all non-incognito messages by default — a clear change from Google’s earlier statements that the app would only store messages transiently and in non-identifiable form. The records will now persist until the user actively deletes them, giving Google default access to a full history of conversations in the app. Users can also avoid the logging by using Allo’s Incognito Mode, which is still fully end-to-end encrypted and unchanged from the initial announcement.
will still be encrypted between the device and Google servers, and stored on servers using encryption that leaves the messages accessible to Google’s algorithms.
According to Google, the change was made to improve Allo's smart reply feature, which generates suggested responses to a given conversation. Like most machine learning systems, the smart replies work better with more data. As the Allo team tested those replies, they decided the performance boost from permanently stored messages was worth giving up privacy benefits of transient storage.
The decision will also have significant consequences for law enforcement access to Allo messages. By default, Allo messages will now be accessible to lawful requests, similar to message data in Gmail and Hangouts and location data collected by Android. In the past, Google legal officers have stated that subpoenas are not sufficient to obtain that information, stating "we believe a warrant is required by the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution" for access to private information in a Google account.
The messages might not be there if the user had previously deleted them, or if the conversations took place in Incognito Mode — but in most cases, they will be. That leaves Google with much less danger of the kind of legal showdown Apple faced in San Bernardinoand WhatsApp currently faces in Brazil.

When WhatsApp, the messaging app, launched in 2009, it struck me as one of the most interesting innovations I’d seen in ages – for two reasons. The first was that it seemed beautifully designed from the outset: it was clean, minimalist and efficient; and, secondly, it had a business model that did not depend on advertising. Instead, users got a year free, after which they paid a modest annual subscription.

Better still, the co-founder Jan Koum, seemed to have a very healthy aversion to the surveillance capitalism that underpins the vast revenues of Google, Facebook and co, in which they extract users’ personal data without paying for it, and then refine and sell it to advertisers. In a blog post headed “Why We Don’t Sell Ads” written in June 2012, for example, Koum quoted approvingly a memorable line uttered by Tyler Durden (played by Brad Pitt) in the movie Fight Club: “Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need.”
“When we sat down to start our own thing together three years ago,” Koum wrote, “we wanted to make something that wasn’t just another ad clearing house. We wanted to spend our time building a service people wanted to use because it worked and saved them money and made their lives better in a small way. We knew that we could charge people directly if we could do all those things. We knew we could do what most people aim to do every day: avoid ads.”
And Koum was as good as his word. WhatsApp grew and grew, because it did what it said on the tin. Its growth was funded by $58m
from Sequoia Capital, the only venture capital firm to invest in it. By February 2013, WhatsApp claimed 200m active users worldwide, and had a valuation of $1.5bn
– not huge by Silicon Valley standards but pretty good for an outfit that had an honest business model.
And then, in February 2014, something strange happened. Facebook offered to buy the company – for $19bn – and Koum and co took the bait. Given that Facebook’s business depends on selling ads, most of us wondered what had happened to Koum’s admirable principles and concluded, gloomily, that everyone has a price.
But for a while WhatsApp continued as before within the Facebook stockade. Not only did it not sell ads, but in November 2014 it announced that it was introducing end-to-end encryption for all WhatsApp communications – which meant that nobody, not even Facebook, could read (and thereby monetise) its users’ messages. So the puzzle continued: why on earth had Mark Zuckerberg paid such a whopping price for a service that he couldn’t exploit?
Now we know. On 25 August WhatsApp announced that it was changing its terms and conditions and its privacy policy. In a blog postwhich is a masterpiece of lawyerly euphemism, it tells us that it is going to “share” with Facebook its users’ phone numbers and details of the last time they signed on to WhatsApp. Every user is asked to click “Agree” to this proposition – although, of course, they can always reverse this agreement if they can find the relevant section of their settings.
Needless to say, this radical change has nothing to do with the needs of WhatsApp’s corporate owners. Perish the thought: it’s to improve things for you, the user. It’s all about using “your WhatsApp account information to improve your Facebook ads and products experience”. And, just to make sure you understand the magnitude of the decision you are about to make, “If you tap ‘Don’t Share’, you won’t be able change this in the future”.
Seasoned observers of the computer industry will recognise this for what it is: just another illustration of the power of the default setting. In marketing-speak, it’s how to “Nudge Your Customers Toward Better Choices” – an implementation of the philosophy set out by Cass Sunstein and Richard Thaler in their book Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth and Happiness.
Of course, it’s true – as Sunstein and Thaler argue – that defaults can sometimes be used to ensure that people do things that are good for them, like ensuring that they enrol in a pension scheme. But in the computer industry, defaults are often deployed purely in the interests of corporations.
So if you’re a WhatsApp user, don’t fall for this particular wheeze: go to “Settings”, select “Account”, “Share my account info” and tap on “Don’t Share”. And do it now, because time’s running out.

Adsense for seek provides publishers with the possibleness to engage a hunt agency finished their website. The look puppet provides results which take adwords adverts, and thence publishers can make revenues.
The effectiveness of this slave for publishers comes in its functionality for website visitors. Those who bed browsed resources on a website may regress to Google to pure a investigate. If this inventiveness is contained within a website they are currently on, then they are likely to use the firm's website for see, and thus the firm can get returns.
Publishers often verify that having a explore means within their website is a corking way to make Adsense revenues without the anxiety of diminishing their kind. In the way that a companion who sells a production would not need a contestant businessperson having an adsense name within their website, they testament not search that this discriminate is germane. The advantages of adsense for see also lies in the location that it occupies on protect. The results are displayed on a distinct author, so publishers do not conceive that they are sacrificing grapheme where Adsense would previously happen.
The means may also perform to visitors selecting the surrendered website as their homepage. If the website contains applicable resources, and solace has the functionality related with Google then the website has broader gross invoke. Those who are temporary the website for the oldest instance, and realising it give not cater their needs may plant use the websites operation part.
Adsense publishers oftentimes propose that they have lower per Flick Through with Search. Though this is the example surfers are more belike to be targeted towards adverts than with Google Adsense. If a visitor has score exchanged the portion or message they recognise to operation for, and isn't compelled by the adverts; they can works hit what they are sensing for as the house earns a proportionality.
It is also a salutary puppet as publishers can afford their site to be searched using the same technology. Thence surfers are many credible to also ascertain the resources within the owner's website that they tell.
Google has a lesser database of advertisers for Adsense through the selectiveness of advertisers. The see toolbar provides results which permit advertisers that do not necessary to appear in Adsense for proportionality.
Google for hunting is also utilized by elephantine mart star websites where this is rarified with adsense. Companies who provide a coupling or trade a set are statesman regularly opting to combine the search toolbar into their website whilst not idea that it depreciates their name.
In fact; numerous businesses actually finger as though their sort is strengthened finished it's encounter with the Google logo. New's who prefer not to use the Google logo, may good from the customers hypothesis that the activity bailiwick utilized belongs to the website they are on, and hence boost benefits are reaped by the firm.
As adsense is plagued with sound humbug, the synoptic is less liable to bechance with search. Emit Dupery would say the individual or persons committing the crime to grow practical searches, and to desist any suspicious conduct. This could be especially hardened, and with fewer revenue per occlusive those committing utter chicane are probable to continue gone from hunting all unitedly.

Twitter has signed a deal with Sky Sports to show Premier League highlights and goals on the social media site from the 2016/17 season.
As part of the agreement, Twitter users in the UK and Ireland will be able to see video clips of key moments and goals from all games broadcast by Sky in real time via the SkyFootball Twitter account.
The Sky Sports Football Centre app will also carry full highlights of every Premier League and Football League match for Sky Sports TV customers, including those shown on BT Sport after those games have ended.
Twitter users and Sky Sports subscribers in Ireland will also be able to see video content in real time from the Saturday 3pm games, which are traditionally not shown on TV.
Twitter’s Theo Luke said of the deal: “We can’t think of a better way to continue the momentous summer of sport on Twitter than live Premier League video clips.
“Sky Sports are incredibly innovative on Twitter so it seemed like a natural fit to work with them to bring fans the most sought after action in sport, in an instant.”
This latest announcement extends Twitter’s growing presence in the world of sport, with the social media platform having already run a similar highlights package during Euro 2016 and offered live and behind-the-scenes coverage of this year’s Wimbledon via its live streaming service, Periscope.
Twitter has faced extensive questions over its future when in competition with other social platforms, including Facebook, which has more than 1.6 billion monthly users compared with Twitter’s 310 million. Many regard the service as too confusing and Twitter has spent much of the last year working on improving its video content and live streaming abilities in order to appeal to new users.
David Gibbs, digital director of Sky Sports and Sky News, said: “We’re delighted to be working with Twitter to bring in-game clips to football fans across the UK and Ireland as part of our biggest ever season of football.
“With more than 30 million users across a variety of platforms, Sky Sports is already the number one digital destination for sports in the UK. By expanding our partnership with Twitter, we can bring even more great action to an even bigger audience.”

Pokémon Go is good for your health, according to scores of excited psychology and fitness experts.
The app has captured the fascination of millions since its launch last week.
Just days old, it is already bigger than Tinder and has overtaken Twitter on Android.
And for all the people that cannot tear themselves away from the game, there's some good news: it could be your new workout.
'I think it's an exciting development,' J Graham Thomas, assistant professor of psychiatry and human behavior at the Miriam Hospital's Weight Control Research Center, told Daily Mail Online.
'For a long time, the technology and gaming industries have been associated with a decrease in physical activity and that has resulted in a lot of health problems.
'To see technology and gaming changing in a way that promotes physical activity and being around other people is really good.'
'Research has long shown the benefits of simple exercise on improving mood.
'The developers behind Pokémon Go didn’t mean to create a mental health gaming app. But they’ve done so, and the effects seem to be largely positive.'
Although Pokémon Go is not the first augmented reality game, it is certainly the first to take off.
It sends users running around streets and parks all over the world trying to catch virtual Pokémon with their cell phone cameras.
Using Google Maps, the app creates a world that mirrors the user's own reality.
And results have already begun to show.
Cardiogram, the fitness tracker app made for the Apple Watch, has recorded a clear uptick in movement since Pokémon Go's release.
FitBits also recorded a spike, and millions of users are posting on Twitter about their physical escapades.

Though these data only account for a specific group of users who have an Apple Watch, downloaded Cardiogram, or bought a FitBit, it is an indicator of the hype - and the increased movement.
'I caught 6 Pokemon on my run today so safe to say I had an efficient work out,' one user wrote.
Another said: 'Did I really walk 13 km yesterday... These Pokemon are getting me in shape.'
Some users have also lauded the app for its psychological benefits.
'PokémonGo is going to do wonders for my mental health, providing me with purpose and reason to go outside at last,' one user said.
For health professionals like Dr Thomas, the viral cell phone game is providing a valuable service that the medical industry cannot.
'Very often the medical community and health researchers don't have the resources to develop something as sophisticated as Pokemon Go to get people moving.
'Gamification of exercise and health is a great way to promote physical activity.
'I would have to assume that the success of Pokémon Go will inspire copycats, which would be great.'
DailyMail

Twitter appears to be testing a new feature that should help users get faster customer support from brands and businesses they follow on the platform.

On select profiles, it’s now displaying when those accounts are most responsive. You can see what that looks like on Medium’s profile page.

The feature is similar to one that Facebook rolled out for Pages. Last August, the social network began displaying a badge that read ‘very responsive to messages’ on Pages that had a response rate of 90 percent and a response time of 15 minutes.

As with other features that we’ve seen on select profiles, this might only be a test Twitter is running; it isn’t clear if it will become available to all users and if they’ll have any control over it. But it should make it easier for users to figure out when they can expect to hear back from businesses once they’ve posted a question or complaint.

It’s also trialing a new ‘Featured Tweets’ tab that seems to display tweets curated by the account owner. You can see it in action on IFTTT’s profile.

If they’re made available more widely, they’ll likely build on features Twitter introduced in February for brands that handled customer service on the platform, including a call to action button so users could quickly start a direct message conversation and survey questions with standardized score responses.

There is growing outrage in the US over the killing of an African American man who was pinned to the ground and shot in the chest by two white police officers outside a convenience store in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The US Justice Department said on Wednesday it would investigate Tuesday’s killing of Alton Sterling, 37, the latest alleged police brutality against blacks.
A graphic video of the shooting recorded by a bystander shows an officer shooting Sterling five times at close range.
Hundreds of people gathered for a prayer vigil near the spot where Sterling was fatally shot, with activists urging people to protest the "excessive force" used by police against African Americans.

"I'm heartbroken. It's outrageous. It's crazy," said Abdullah Muflahi, the owner of the Triple S Food Mart where Sterling was killed in the parking lot.
Muflahi said he considered Sterling a friend and allowed him to sell CDs outside his store. He said police took a gun from Sterling's pocket.
Video recorded on the bystander's cell phone shows an officer approaching Sterling and ordering him to lie on the ground. The two officers then tackle him to the floor, with one pulling a gun from his holster and pointing it at his chest.
The officers were responding to a call about a black man reported to have made threats with a gun, according to Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie.
Dabadie told a news conference that the two police officers involved, Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake were both put on administrative leave.
Relatives and acquaintances described Sterling as jovial and friendly, a neighborhood fixture who had peddled copied CDs, DVDs and games in front of the Triple S Food Mart for years.
Cameron Sterling, Alton's 15-year-old son, broke down crying at a news conference as his mother spoke. "He was killed unjustly and without regard for the lives he helped raise," said the mother, who did not give her name.
The latest police killing comes as law enforcement departments across the United States face increased scrutiny over allegations of excessive force against black people and other minority groups.
Police in the United States killed over 1,150 people in 2015, with the largest police departments disproportionately killing at least 321 African Americans, according to data compiled by an activist group that runs the Mapping Police Violence project, Press TV reported.
The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) announced in a statement on Wednesday that it has arrested an Iranian-British national at Imam Khomeini International Airport for spying charges.
Nazanin Zaghari was arrested by the IRGC's Kerman Province Intelligence Department at Imam Khomeini International Airport on April 3 while she was trying to leave the country and was later transferred to Kerman for her involvement in a regime change plot, the IRGC statement read.
"One of the heads of the (spying) networks affiliated with foreign countries who had conducted different missions in line with the realization of the heinous objectives of the enemies of the Islamic establishment has been identified and captured," the statement added.
The statement went on to say that the foreign news media, specially those of Britain have tried in recent months to disrupt the IRGC's determination through their media hype, but to no avail.

instagramToday we’re introducing a new look. You’ll see an updated icon and app design for Instagram.

Inspired by the previous app icon, the new one represents a simpler camera and the rainbow lives on in gradient form.

You’ll also see updated icons for our other creative apps: Layout, Boomerang and Hyperlapse.
<ins class="adsbygoogle" data-ad-client="ca-pub-6496744422534151" data-ad-format="auto" data-ad-slot="8282600866" style="display: block;"></ins>

We’ve made improvements to how the Instagram app looks on the inside as well. The simpler design puts more focus on your photos and videos without changing how you navigate the app.
The Instagram community has evolved over the past five years from a place to share filtered photos to so much more — a global community of interests sharing more than 80 million photos and videos every day.

Our updated look reflects how vibrant and diverse your storytelling has become.
Thank you for giving this community its life and color. You make Instagram a place to discover the wonder in the world.

Do you still see your friend's old email address as a
suggested contact in the Mail app? You can get rid of that.

When sending an email, the Mail app uses autofill to suggest a contact based on the name you enter. Sometimes, outdated email addresses show up in the suggestion list, even though you've updated the person's information in your Contacts app. There is a way to remove email addresses from these autofill suggestions so you don't accidentally send something to an unused mail box. Here's how.

How to remove a contact from recents in the Mail app

If you have removed an email address from your Contacts app, but it still appears when you are sending a message, get it off the list before you accidentally use it.

Of course you will need to have Google Maps installed on your device, so make free app in the App Store. Once you have that installed and ready to go, follow these steps:

sure to grab the

Open the Google Maps app and search for an area or location you want to save

Once you have that area entered, tap on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) and choose Offline areas

In Offline Areas tap on the plus (+) icon in the lower-right corne

You can pinch and zoom around to get the exact area you want. There is a limit to how big you can go, and also know that the bigger map you save the more space it and time it will take to download.

Tap on Download, title your new offline map and tap Save. Your offline map will begin downloading to your device.

That’s pretty much it. That location will be saved on your device for 30 days. After 30 days Google will delete it from your phone in an effort to save space. You can of course re-download the offline map at any time. There is also an update feature that you should try to use a much as possible. There is always construction and new buildings coming up in Los Angeles, so an updated map is extremely helpful.

Whenever you are offline or disable cellular data that map will be available for you to pinch and zoom like a digital map, and can still dictate driving directions. The driving direction is great for getting around an area without the need to be online at all (sans real-time traffic updating). It can come very handy while you’re travelling abroad and don’t want to use data to rack up crazy data roaming charges.

Of course, if you are offline there will be no traffic information detailed so walking, biking, and transit directions will all be unavailable.

You can view and edit your offline maps by tapping the menu icon and selecting Offline areas. All of your saved offline maps will be listed in this section. When you tap on an area you can delete or update it. To view a workable version of the map just type in the location in the search function and the map will load when you are offline.

We hope Apple adds the offline maps feature to the Maps app in iOS 10.

How useful are offline maps to you? Let us know in the comment section.

If you own an Apple iPad, statistically, the odds are you own an iPad 2. There's no shame in that. Your four-year-old tablet is probably on your coffee table, or next to your bed. Maybe it's in your briefcase, full of movies for your flight tomorrow. Perhaps you're thinking about upgrading to the new 9.7-inch iPad Pro. There are many new features (and limitations) that only show up in the iPad Pro. Here's what you should know.
01
Size Matters
The most important thing an iPad does is work everywhere. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro is a terrific device, but it's most comfortable on a desk. The 7.9-inch iPad Mini is too small to do anything more than deal with email. The 9.7-inch model is the closest thing yet to a perfect middle ground: Big enough to give you space to work, small enough to hold with one hand. It's the Goldilocks iPad.
02
This Screen Is a Sight to Behold
Cool: the iPad Pro's True Tone display, which calibrates the tablet's screen so it looks right even if you're in a room with weird lighting. Cooler (technically Warmer): Night Shift, which works on any device with iOS 9.3, changes the color spectrum at night so you can use the device without hurting your eyes or disturbing your sleep. The iPad Pro's screen uses a wider color gamut, too, and is absolutely the best screen ever on an iPad.

03
Apple (Almost) Made Typing Great Again
Nearly every iPad keyboard case ever made has been cramped, clumsy, and cumbersome. Apple's own Smart Keyboard—unique to the iPad Pro—isn't perfect, because you just can't fit a full-size keyboard into so little space. But you get used to it, and at least it doesn't look awful or weigh as much as the tablet itself. The Smart Keyboard is the keyboard case you should buy.
04
Don't Call It a Stylus
The Apple Pencil is for drawing and sketching. Maybe for taking notes in a meeting. It's not for navigating, avoiding fingerprints while you play games, or typing on the on-screen keyboard. It doesn't do such things well at all. If you have no artistic intentions for your iPad Pro, you don't need to drop a Benjamin on the Pencil. If you do, you should. Also, it only works on the iPad Pro, and not iPad Air.

05
The App Store Needs a Pro Boost
There are a few truly remarkable apps in the iOS App Store for 3D modeling, drawing, city planning, and the like. But only a few. Even though the iPad Pro is powerful enough to do real work, it simply may not have the apps you need---either because Apple's made it too hard for developers to make money over time, or because there aren't yet enough professional users with professional expense accounts.
06
Multitasking Is an Overstatement
The most ADD thing you can do on the iPad Pro is have two apps running side by side, with a tiny video window overlaid in one corner. That's a massive improvement over the regular iPad's obsessive monotasking (and a use case that begs for the new device's fast processor), but still nothing like what you can do with a decent laptop or desktop. Apple would tell you it's good for focus; I say it's bad for productivity.

07
There's Desk Work And There's Plane Work
Let's say you're on vacation---a beach in Belize, say---and the boss pings you to say he needs to you to send six emails and double-check that spreadsheet, stat. The iPad Pro is perfect for these kinds of short, simple, and task-oriented tasks. It's light and portable, it lasts a long time, it'll work anywhere. But if you're already sitting at your desk, hunkering down for the workday, wouldn't you want something with more power, more screen, more flexibility?
08
Fast Keeps Getting Faster
I keep thinking the iPad is fast enough, and I'm probably right, but the Pro really is at another level. Whether you're triple-tasking, playing the increasingly impressive games available in the App Store, or editing video, you feel the difference. It used to feel like a reach to call an iPad a "desktop-class" device, but not anymore. This thing screams.

09
More Speakers Means Merrier Audio
One of the best things about both sizes of iPad Pro is the four speakers, one on each corner, that output stereo sound in any orientation. The iPad Pro is loud enough to be heard over the din of your kitchen, the running water, or your obnoxious roommate. That goes a long way toward it feeling like a tablet that can truly do everything you need, no accessories needed.

10
LTE Is the Real Must-Have Accessory
If you buy the iPad Pro, odds are good you're going to keep it for a while. Longer than your phone, probably longer than your laptop. If you can swing it, get the iPad Pro with LTE capability. Purchasing (and cancelling) cellular service is incredibly easy, and it's the kind of thing you'll want more than you think on a machine that's more capable of office tasks. If you have an LTE iPad Pro, you'll find it's suddenly useful many more places.
11
The All-in-One Work Machine Is Coming
Most of the best use cases for the iPad Pro are really heavily prescribed. You take notes here, then take a picture of your document like this, then file it here, open it in this app, send it there. But these things are going to get easier and broader, and there really is something magical about being able to—for instance—shoot, edit, and share video in the same device. Or take a picture of a document, mark it up, and send it off in a single app. This is the futur

Twitter is adding a button to tweets on Android and iOS today that lets you share them to a person or group using direct messages. Until now, if you wanted share a DM, you had to long-press on the tweet or click the ellipsis icon and then choose "share via direct message." Now you can click the envelope icon that appears underneath a tweet, to the right of the heart, and select the person or group you'd like to send it to. From there, you can add a comment or just hit send.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" data-ad-client="ca-pub-6496744422534151" data-ad-format="auto" data-ad-slot="8282600866" style="display: block;"></ins>
The new feature is similar to one that Pinterest launched when it released its own messaging function in 2014. At the time, Pinterest talked up its ability to create "conversations around an object," and I imagine Twitter thinks of its DMs the same way. How might you use such a feature? In a promotional GIF, Twitter suggests sending DMs to plan a camping trip, which is something that has probably never happened in the history of Twitter. You're more likely to use it to help you talk trash about something stupid that someone tweeted, sharing it with someone else who also has to follow that person for social reasons. "Can you believe this clown," you'll probably say, via DM, and then hope the other person doesn't screenshot it.
The number of DMs grew 60 percent in 2015, Twitter said, because people love to talk trash about each other. Thousands have shared a Facebook post from bomb-hit Turkish capital Ankara asking social media users to show Turkey the same solidarity they have showed to France.
James Taylor, who hails from Northamptonshire in England but lives in the city, posted on the social media site asking: “You were Charlie, you were Paris. Will you be Ankara?”, in a reference to popular online campaigns in support of the victims of attacks on the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris in January 2015 and those who died in gun and bomb attacks on the city later in the year.
Taylor said the bomb, which exploded in the center of the city on Sunday and killed at least 37 people, was “the equivalent of a bomb going off outside Debenhams on the Drapery in Northampton, or on New street in Birmingham, or Piccadilly Circus in London.

“ Imagine [the victims] were English,” he added, “and this attack was in England.
If these people were instead the people you see every day on your way to work, people just like you and I, normal, happy people. Families, policemen, students, artists, couples. Your friends maybe.
“These people are no different. They just happen to be Turkish.”
The bomb, which has sparked widespread condemnation from politicians around the world, has provoked a furious backlash from the Turkish government.
President Erdogan has vowed a crackdown on terror. The Turkish government believes the bomb was the work of the Kurdish PKK militant group, according to the BBC.

Google has hired the founder of 4chan, the web forum notoriously credited as being the birthplace of the Anonymous hacking collective.
Chris Poole, known by his online moniker Moot, created 4chan in 2003 when he was 15 years old.
Originally an image-sharing hub for fans of Japanese anime, it has since grown into a sprawling messaging board that has garnered controversy for offensive and occasionally illegal content.
In 2014, hacked nude images of celebrities, including the actor Jennifer Lawrence, appeared on the site, following a breach to Apple’s iCloud service. Poole left the site in 2015, eventually selling it to a Japanese entrepreneur. The site continues to attract 22 million monthly visitors.
“When meeting with current and former Googlers, I continually find myself drawn to their intelligence, passion, and enthusiasm—as well as a universal desire to share it with others,” Poole said in post on Tumblr. “I’m also impressed by Google’s commitment to enabling these same talented people to tackle some of the world’s most interesting and important problems.
“I can’t wait to contribute my own experience from a dozen years of building online communities, and to begin the next chapter of my career at such an incredible company.”
Bradley Horowitz, Google’s vice president of streams, photos and sharing, welcomed Poole to the tech giant in a post on his Google+ page. “I’m thrilled he’s joining our team here at Google,” Horowitz said.
It has been speculated that Poole’s experience will be used by Google to boost its social media platforms, including its flagging Google+ social network.
