This book analyses early modern narratives that have shaped Europe's understanding of its Islamic heritage and produces reflective material addressing four main themes: religion, permeability, opposition, and images. The chapters herein seek to create a connected history, defining pan-European trends rather than comparative histories. Through collaborative research, the contributors to this volume explore the narratives that circulated in late medieval and early modern Europe and the Mediterranean, if and how these narratives linked different regions, and their lasting influence on modern views.

About this lecture series

These lectures examine the books produced by Muslim minorities in Christian Iberia from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the seventeenth century. Even after the forcible conversion of Muslims at the beginning of the sixteenth century, these minorities continued to use, copy and clandestinely preserve Muslim books. Manuscripts were bought and taken outside Spain, collected and read by groups from Italian Humanists to Early Orientalist in Northern Europe.

This lecture series will analyse the itineraries of some of these Muslim Iberian manuscripts through libraries and centres of knowledge, as well as how they were used and interpreted outside their Iberian context. These phenomena include the personal contacts and collaboration between expelled Iberian Muslims and European Christian scholars, and raise the question of how Morisco literature affected Early Modern understanding of Islam.

The expulsion of the Moriscos from Habsburg Spain between 1609 and 1614 represents the largest expulsion of a minority in Europe in the early modern period, an important episode of ethnic, political and religious cleansing which affected about 300,000 forced migrants.

This book studies for the first time how this group, which was affected by discrimination, religious persecution, and repression, displayed physical and spiritual resilience and prepared themselves for imminent radical measures by forming networks which helped them before, during, and after the expulsion to contact authorities in France, Italy, Morocco, Algiers, Tunis, Egypt and the Ottoman Empire in order to ask for help and to establish themselves in the news lands and form Diaspora communities which in many places have remained visible until today.

In The Morisco Diaspora and the Morisco Networks across the Mediterranean, (Leiden, The Netherlands: Brill, 2024) doi: https://doi.org/10.1163/9789004730885_007 Abstract: The presence of Moriscos in Tunisia has been well studied, especially when compared with diasporas in other regions and countries. Between 1917 and 2017, 200 studies appeared in different fields and languages.1 However, despite this abundant bibliography, there are many gaps in the history of the Moriscos in Tunisia, due to the lack of documents and sources. A limited number of documents from the seventeenth century can be found in the Tunisian National Archive. Very few records exist from the beginning of that century, the period of the arrival of the Moriscos in the country. Even though documentation from the eighteenth century is more available, it is still minimal. Moreover, local sources about the Morisco presence are usually too abbreviated when some specific aspects of it are discussed. Although the lack of local "raw materials" is less than ideal, European sources and archives offer information/background/context for the topic of this paper. I will be focusing on the roles of those that I call "the powerful Moriscos," meaning the leaders of the Morisco community in Tunisia, especially the Ašrāf, the Sufis, and the wealthy. I will explore how this lobby of "powerful Moriscos" worked through their networks with local Ottoman authorities inside and with other communities outside Tunisia. An analysis of these Morisco individuals reveals the roles played by this group in the settlement of Moriscos in Tunisia shortly after 1609, and how they protected the wealth and privileges of their community during the seventeenth century. The Morisco leaders negotiated directly with the local Tunisian authority, or indirectly through Constantinople (with the Ottomans), regarding the reception of the exiles or refugees and Morisco settlement in Tunisia.

Tunisia’s Andalusians tells the captivating story of those Andalusians, descendants of Muslims expelled from Spain in the seventeenth century, who sought refuge in Tunisia. Rather than simply replicating Iberian traditions, Andalusian culture in Tunisia stands as a vibrant and evolving phenomenon, shaped by complex dynamics of interaction and adaptation over four centuries. The book dismantles the romanticised view of Andalusian culture as a mere transplantation of al-Andalus, analysing distinctive cultural features that distinguish Andalusians as an ethnic group within Tunisia’s diverse social fabric.

About the Author

Marta Domínguez Díaz is a Senior Lecturer in Islamic Studies (Anthropology) at the University of St. Gallen. She holds a BA from Barcelona and an MA and PhD from SOAS, London. Previously, she has held research and teaching positions at SOAS and the Woolf Institute in Cambridge and collaborated with the Religious Studies Department at the University of Vienna. Her research interests encompass cultural identities and ethnicity in North Africa, Sufism (North African and European), Islam in Europe, Ritual Studies, Comparative Religion, and Muslim-Jewish Relations. Her publications include, Women in Sufism: Female Religiosities in a Transnational Order (Routledge, 2015) and numerous academic articles in her fields of expertise.

تمثل "المسألة الموريسكية" مثالا نموذجيا على المرحلة الأولى من سياسات صياغة المجتمع الحديثة وتجارب الطرد والشتات، جاوزت في تأثيرها المادي والرمزي حدود الجماعة الموريسكية لتمتد للطرف الطارد: المجتمع الإسباني بكل شرائحه وفئاته وجهات الاستقبال في شمال إفريقيا وأبعد. وانطلاقا من عمله الأول: "السفارديم والموريسكيون … رحلة التهجير والتوطين في بلاد المغرب" سعى المؤرخ حسام الدين شاشية لتتبع حدث الطرد كخطاب وسردية سعى كل فاعل - أو مفعول به - فيه أن يبرره ويوظّفه ويقدمه بما يخدم تموضعه السياسي والثقافي والمجتمعي.

واستكمالا لمشروع تفكيك هذه السرديات، يأتي كتابه الأخير "المشهد الموريسكي: سرديات الطرد في الفكر الإسباني الحديث" كمحاولة للوقوف على صدى الحضور الموريسكي في الذاكرة والمدونات الإسبانية لما بعد سنة 1609. من النصوص الإخبارية والتاريخية وكتب الرحلات، ومرورا بمحاضر محاكم التفتيش والارشيفات الملكية والإدارية، وصولا إلى كل الانتاجات الأدبية والفنية من شعر ومسرح ورواية ورسم، يتتبع شاشية تطور وتغير الرؤية الإسبانية للموريسكيين - وخاصة من بقي منهم في إسبانيا بعد قرار الطرد- من مرحلة " عصر التبرير" خلال القرن السابع عشر إلى إعادة الاكتشاف والحنين الرومانسي في أواسط القرن التاسع عشر.

ما هي أبرز ملامح الحضور الموريسكي في الذاكرة الإسبانية وتطوراتها؟ ما الدوافع التي قادت لهذه التغيرات؟ هل فتحت الباب أمام الإسبان لمساءلة تاريخهم وهويتهم؟ وهل تنجح الذاكرة في ترميم ما مضى وتحصين المجتمعات الحديثة من نزعات الإقصاء ورفض التعددية الثقافية؟ كل هذا وأكثر سنسعى للإجابة عليه في لقائنا مع المؤرخ حسام الدين شاشية بعنوان " الحضور الموريسكي في الفكر الإسباني الحديث" والذي يحاوره فيه كلّ من حبيبة عليّة وأمين الحرشاني.

"Los moriscos eran los musulmanes de al-Ándalus que se habían bautizado tras la Pragmática de 1502 de los Reyes Católicos. Vivían de manera libre con el resto de los cristianos, sin embargo, aunque se bautizaron, desde muy temprano se limitó su vestimenta. En 1508 se promulgó una Real Cédula que tenía como fin restringir el uso de sus ropas (Domínguez y Vincent, 1997, p.21). La cuestión siguió latente a lo largo de la centuria, instituyéndose en 1572 una Pragmática que trató de organizar la vida de los moriscos después de su expulsión del Reino de Granada (Moreno, 2017, p. 287). A partir de entonces comenzamos a ver cómo se introdujeron poco a poco modificaciones en sus vestidos, adaptándolo así a las ropas castellanas. Esta ‘castellanización’ se puede seguir a través de las dotes, testamentos, etc. (Fernández y Pérez, 2010), no obstante, no se trató de un cambio radical, sino que hubo prendas que pervivieron (Moreno, 2017, p. 288; Silva, 2004, pp. 142-143). En varias láminas podemos observar cómo era su indumentaria, cuya trascendencia se evidencia con la maurofilia existente a lo largo de los siglos XV y principios del XVI (Franco y Moreno, 2019; Briesemeister, 2006). Atraídos por las particularidades del vestuario morisco, los españoles cristianos tomaron las prendas más llamativas del traje moro y las utilizaron en fiestas, torneos, etc. (Nogales, 2018, pp. 49-51). La influencia del traje morisco fue tan grande que a finales del siglo XV ya no se empleaban estas prendas solamente en ocasiones festivas, sino que se constituyeron como rasgos distintivos del traje cristiano de los españoles (Bernis, 1962, p.29). Una de las prendas más utilizadas por las mujeres cristianas en España y que tenía su origen en la moda morisca fue la camisa o alcandora. A mediados del siglo XV las mujeres usaron las camisas labradas y listadas y las lucieron al exterior. Dicha prenda podía confeccionarse de varias formas, pero lo habitual era elaborarlas mediante el punto real que llevaba oro y plata y el punto de almofarán que era de seda. Las camisas eran piezas muy vistosas y lujosas, por lo que vestirla era considerado un alarde de ostentación. Asimismo, las calzas moras fueron uno de los elementos más pintorescos del traje morisco. La anchura y lo arrugadas que estaban creaban la ilusión de que las mujeres que las llevaban tenían las piernas muy gruesas, tal y como vemos en los dibujos de Weiditz. Se utilizaban para cubrir las piernas y el cuerpo, además, había varios tamaños de calzas: las calzas enteras, las calzas-bragas y las calzas compuestas por dos prendas (Bernis, 1962, pp. 79-80). En el Trachtenbuch una de las mujeres aparece llevando los zaragüelles, que era una prenda similar al calzón que podía llegar hasta el tobillo. Cabe destacar también el uso de la almalafa, un manto que utilizaban las mujeres moriscas . Este se muestra en los dibujos como un manto largo que se iniciaba en la cabeza y llegaba hasta debajo de las rodillas, cubriendo a la mujer casi en su totalidad.

Las diferentes regiones por las que va pasando su autors e ven claramente en el códice. No obstante, aunque este dividiese sus láminas atendiendo a las particularidades que observaba en cada región, no podemos reducir la moda morisca a prendas utilizadas únicamente por estos, sino que la influencia que ejerció la indumentaria a la morisca fue notoria en los cristianos. De entre todas las manifestaciones culturales propias de los moriscos, resulta evidente que el vestido es uno de los elementos más sencillos para clasificarlos como grupo (Irigoyen-García, 2018, p. 30). Precisamente esta diferencia en el vestir es lo que hizo que su traje fuese visto como algo exótico y, por tanto, representado."

Abstract:

Esta obra tiene como objetivo profundizar en la discusión académica sobre "Túnez, el Mediterráneo y los Moriscos" desde una multiplicidad de perspectivas científicas. Así, pues, el tema es revisitado con rigor crítico y con nuevas aproximaciones aportadas por los más recientes estudios, a los que se suma el descubrimiento de nuevas fuentes documentales. Se ha abordado histórica y antropológicamente la dimensión mediterránea de la identidad tunecina, porque la historia, el patrimonio y la identidad de Túnez no pueden ser entendidos de forma desligada de la historia y la cultura del Mediterráneo.

Con las presentes contribuciones los autores del presente libro han querido poner de relieve la importancia de los estudios sobre temática morisca en Túnez, un país en el corazón geográfico e histórico del Mediterráneo. A través de ellas, quieren dejar constancia de que el legado científico de Slimane Mustapha Zbiss y de Míkel de Epalza sigue vigente y que continuar la senda investigadora de la que ellos fueron pioneros es tan valioso como necesario. Este es, pues, un sincero homenaje colectivo a la memoria de dos grandes investigadores que contribuyeron en muchos aspectos a acercar las orillas del Mediterráneo.

This talk analyzes the different representations of the Moriscos’ history in Spanish and Arab thought from the early modern era to today. First, it examines the evolution of the presence of this history in the literature and historic texts of the Spanish golden age (XVIe-XVIIe centuries). Secondly, it studies Spanish and Arab treatment of the subject in the XVIIIe and XIXe centuries, which means through the newspapers, writings of a historical nature, travel literature, novels, plays, etc. Thirdly, the talk explores the contemporary Arab literature and historic representations of the Moriscos’ history, and considers: how did it evolve quantitatively and qualitatively.

نحاول من خلال هذه المحاضرة تحليل مُختلف التمثلات الإسبانية والعربية للتاريخ الموريسكي منذ بداية الفترة الحديثة إلى اليوم. بدايةً، سنحاول البحث في تطور حضور هذا التاريخ في النصوص الأدبية والإخبارية الإسبانية للعصر الذهبي (القرنين 16 و 17). ثانياً، سندرس التناول الإسباني والعربي للمسألة في القرنين الثامن عشر والتاسع عشر، أي من خلال النصوص ذات الطبيعة التاريخية، الجرائد، أدب الرحلة، الروايات والمسرحيات. ثالثاً، سنبحث في التمثل العربي التاريخي والأدبي المعاصر للتاريخ الموريسكي وكيف تطور كمّاً ونوعاً.
