Looking Back 2020

The year is not quite over, but it might as well be. I can't really imagine any further significant events taking place in the next few weeks, except a great shopping frenzy among us as we eagerly await a new administration to be ushered into the White House, and cross our fingers for a little peace and a lot of progress. A little uneventfulness would do us all good.

I've always thought the minutes are slow, and the years are quick. Well this year has been an especially good example of that. The web calls drag on, and at times, feel draining. It surprises me that events that took place before shelter in place was announced was just earlier this year. Was it really just about 9 months ago that life was still 'normal'? Feels a lot longer, and also feels like yesterday.

The last few months have become one big blur to me as time speeds on by, and it has been more or less of the same routine. Commute to desk, hop on calls, try not to be depressed by headlines, prepare meals, and repeat. At times, this year has felt mundane, and I know that is no hardship at all. I am grateful, especially these days. A little reflection reminded me that I have some pretty good memories to look back on, and because of that, I am very lucky. It's the memories that make up the lives we live.

Maui, Hawaii

At the beginning of this year, I got my first airport lei in Hawaii! Upon landing, I was offered a lei at the airport. I didn't even know this was still a thing.

We ventured on the Road to Hana and learned about what Maui during a drought, pineapple plantations, native crops, giant avocados, invasive plants, and the town of Hana itself. Hana is small and remote, by design, with a community ecosystem. There is just the one general store, one post office, one hotel, and everybody knows each other.

Here is a car that veered off the road. It looks like no one was hurt, but the car was forced to be abandoned. Apparently this is not uncommon as there are other rusting vehicles in the forest.

We paid this bakery a visit before our flight back home. It may not look like much, but these butter rolls are so satisfying and simple. I also got a loaf of Mango Bread to take home.

Had I known this would be the last trip I would take in a while, I probably would have chosen an international destination. I have so many on my list. But I'm glad I was able to travel to a lush destination with blissful ignorance, and return healthy and safe.

Come April I was trying to fashion a faux mask out of a scarf. To entertain myself, I downloaded an app to learn how to play chess and Tim got me a Rubik's cube.

We finally made use of our balcony, and enjoyed some snacks.

A few weeks later, Tim graduated with his master's.

A few weeks after that, we moved back to our hometown. I don't know what it is, but it feels so good to be back in the city. I'm just a silly city girl. Tim and I were able to enjoy the warmer months and for a while, we biked to the Ferry Building every week.

After our small Thanksgiving at home with a big meal, I was in the mood to reminisce and reflect on this year. I've been feeling more thankful than usual. I'm particularly thankful for all the memories I've made in all the places I've been to, and that is probably why this wall is one of my favorite things to look at.

Tough Conversations

What happens when something goes so wrong that you can't fix it with what you have at your disposal? You may need to start over. Is that what is going on with the world right now?

I feel a little lied to. Our whole lives, we have been taught that this country was founded on the ideals of equality, freedom, liberty, justice. But these are just words. Without a way to measure the quality of our justice system we have been blindly trusting those who have the power to influence people's lives and the absolute authority to take away lives.

To do better, do we need to start over? Should we not try to start over? Should we not try to do better? How did we let this go on for so long?

Maybe we... Or maybe I wanted to believe all that I was taught, that this is a great country, where we all can succeed without discrimination holding us back. This the great land where so many people fought to come here for a chance at a better life, a safer life, a life with a higher standard of living, a life of more comfort, a more successful life. If I am honest with myself, I wanted to keep believing this was true, is true.

I wanted to believe that all the stories of racism, greed, corruption, oppression, discrimination were anecdotal tales, exceptions to the fundamental values of the United States of America. The land of the free?

Deep down I knew this was not entirely true, is not true. There is no way I could have turned a blind eye to the injustices happening all around us, again and again, consistently and frequently. These are not anecdotal tales, but they are stories of heartbreaking, gut-wrenching pain and injustice that just will not stop, and for so many who endure, the pain is constant.

Still there are those who can turn a blind eye. Do they choose not to see it? Can't they or won't they? Which is a more severe problem, those who can't or those who won't?

Yesterday was Father's day. For many, it was the first time we spent any time with our fathers or families since the quarantine began, since shelter-in-place restrictions began to ease up this weekend. Dutifully my husband and I made the obligatory trip to my parent's house for the occasion. My father asked "How safe is it on your side of the city? Are you guys okay with all the crazy (Pride) parades and demonstrations?"

I said "It has bypassed our neighborhood and we are too far from the main roads to see any of it. Plus our area is generally pretty quiet."

Dad said "It doesn't matter. Black people are destroying everything wherever they go."

I gave my husband a look to silently say "Here we go again."

Dad goes on, "Black people have opportunities, but instead of working hard they choose to complain about inequality. It has gotten so bad that white people don't even dare speak up for themselves."

I said "How do you know that? Why do you think that? Have you listened to these black people and what has happened to them?"

Dad said "No. I don't need to listen to their yelling. And I don't want to listen when they just don't want to work hard. America has a huge problem because of them."

I mutter more to myself "America has been having problems long before all this."

My father was a Chinese immigrant who was dead set on leaving the communist regime that hurt his family and stripped away their livelihood. Resentfully, my father was determined to get the life he wanted and he felt he could not do it in China, and so came to the USA. For years he worked any job he could get and survived. He eventually landed the job that was the contributing factor that afforded our small family's (my father, mother, and I) lifestyle. When I was 11, my father started working as a clerk for the United States Postal Service. My father was so happy and proud the day he got the job. Finally, there was some financial security, stability, and a little breathing room, a little less to worry about. Dad clung to this job and never looked elsewhere, right up until he retired a couple years back. Survival was the goal and that was achieved. My parents even thrived. With family help, they bought a house, and road the market that launched its market value. The mortgage is paid off. They are owners of a 7 figure home and two cars, and they are retired. (Isn't this the American dream?)

This is a story not unlike many other immigrant families who found a way to make it work in this country.

Unfortunately my father's story reinforced his opinion that anyone can achieve success with hard work. If you are not successful it is because you did not work hard, and any explanations of your circumstances or insurmountable challenges are just excuses.

If anyone is unsuccessful, homeless, poor, or struggling, it must be their fault. It must be you.

After all my dad got what he wanted and he came to this country with so little. Dad thinks 'If I can do it, anyone else should be able to as well."

But how can he see that his challenges are not comparable to that of a stranger's? How can any of us ever truly know someone else's struggles? So which is it? Is it can't or won't? Cannot or will not?

Is it my father's personal story and stubborn attitude that fastened blinders to his eyes and he cannot see injustice in this world? In our world?

He did also say that he does not and will not listen to what the black people have to say.

So it is both cannot and will not. How can you reason with someone when cannot and will not stand in the way of reason?

There have been so many times in our lives when I have felt exasperated and defeated by our disagreements and arguments. It is futile to explain to someone what the truth is or what your personal opinion is when what they want to focus on: 1. they believe they are right, 2. they refuse to see that they might be wrong, 3. they believe that you must be wrong for thinking in opposition.

I learned this lesson in futility at a young age. Sadly this lesson led me to give up too easily in arguments when I think I am right, oftentimes even when I know I am right. I adopted the attitude of 'I will get nowhere trying to reason with you, so I can't be bothered to waste my breath on you." How many of us have taken this approach when in disagreement with someone who is stubborn, unjust, or just plain unfair? Have you ever felt fed up and feel you cannot waste your energy on such mentally exhausting conversations? It is like when someone states they will not have children and explains why they have made a lifestyle choice that best suits them, but the person asking is not listening. What a waste of an explanation.

I am starting to understand that the effects of rolling over too easily are even worse than I had realized. It means I have not only allowed someone else to continue thinking the way they do, but I've also allowed them to act upon these thoughts and communicate these thoughts and spread their opinions to others, and it has spread infectiously.

I am re-learning that it is not okay to give up on tough disagreements. When we are talking about systemic racism and people are dying, giving up on these arguments is bad. It is dangerous. It kills people. So when you know you are right, you have to and need to speak up. But how do we hold our ground and stick to our ideals and principles and speak up for what is right and wrong? How can we speak convincingly and effectively when we know it is inevitable that our words will fall on some deaf ears?

We do need to start over. But how? Is there a plan? A vision for the end goal that defines true equality and justice for all? Is there a visionary who has such a plan, one we can execute to together? I believe Martin Luther King Jr. was such a visionary. Will there ever be another? I will continue to ask how? And why? I will continue to ponder and learn. I will try my best to speak my mind the way I know how. Because what else can we do?

Chestnut Soup, Scallop, and I forget what the cabbage-like thing was.

The scallop was somewhat pickled and was tart and satisfying. I could have eaten 10 of those scallops. The chestnut was rich and savory. Finally, an amuse bouche I actually care about.

Roasted Sweetbreads, Licorice, Grilled Pear and Lemon

Oh man, sweetbreads are so deliciously fatty and almost sinfully rich. I really don't understand what part of the dish was licorice. If it was the long stem-like objects, there was no way I or Mr. Joy could bite into those stick-like ornaments. The lemon jelly was sweet and tart, as was the pear, which complimented the sweetbreads very well. I just wish that the pear was cut up or sliced a bit, because that giant piece of pear was a little cumbersome to work with.

Foie Gras Brulee, Dried Sour Cherries, Candied Pistachios and White Port Gelee

Is foie gras ever not satisfying? Actually foie gras and sweetbreads were nearly overkill when combined together, but Mr. Joy always orders foie gras if it is on the menu. The pistachios added much needed crunch and texture to the dish. The white port gelee was good and kind of reminds me of animal fat that forms into gelatin when you refrigerate it.

Crispy Confit of Suckling Pig, Rutabaga "Pudding" and Smoked Bacon Marmalade

Although I was surprised to see suckling pig shaped into a rectangular solid, it was amazing. Salty, savory meat with a bit of crunch. The bacon marmalade was a little sweet, salty, and wonderful. I was not as big of a fan of the rutabaga pudding.

Sauteed Veal Scallopine, Flying Pig Ham, Mushrooms and Lavender

I have not had veal too many times in my life, but I'm convinced this is veal done right. Juicy & tender with wonderful little mushrooms on top. I'm not sure what flying pig ham is, but I'm pretty sure it is like bacon.

Citrus Dessert Tasting

For dessert, I chose the citrus dessert tasting...

Citrus Dessert - Citrus Cheesecake with Orange Powder, Meyer Lemon Confit, & Grapefruit Granite with Tonic Gelee, Vanilla Meringue
The cheesecake was delightfully light. I like creamy things with citrus notes. I don't like candied fruit and the little candied jelly fruit on top was okay, just not my preference.
The grapefruit granite with tonic gelee & vanilla meringue was sweet & sour, not at all heavy, just a little creamy from the meringue. That was the best part of the dessert.

The complimentary chocolate box & candle was a nice touch, but we were already getting too full for more dessert. Gold foil is always pretty, but just a thought - does it ever taste like anything?

The petit fours, although appreciated, was way too much dessert for us. Also, the macarons were tough and chewy. The marshmallows are nice. They cut the marshmallow table side when they present it to you. I don't usually like marshmallows because I find them overly sticky and cloyingly sweet, but these weren't too sweet or sticky.

We had a great meal. The dining room looks amazing. Just one thing - tables are just a touch too cozy. The small booths in the alcoves are a little close to the tables adjacent to them. It kind of feels like the people dining in those booths are looking directly into the table across from them.

Service was impeccable, but not stuffy. Our server was warm and friendly. We made a reservations and waited in the lobby for a few minutes while they got our table ready. When they offered to take our coats, I said, "Maybe later. I'm still cold, thank you." Then we were seated with our coats still on. A few minutes after we got our water, our server gathered up our coats and put them away in their coat closet for us. It's the little things that really show caliber of their service. The rest of the staff was friendly and really made us feel welcome.

Ol Dirty Batard - Jim Beam rye, punt e mes, cocchi rosa, mole bitters Inglorious Batard - fidencio lásico mezcal, grand marnier, lime, honey, bitters

Yes, I copied that from the menu. No I don't know what half of these things are. I don't know much about cocktails. They were delicious. With the Ol Dirty Batard, you get more of a kick with the Jim Beam. The Inglorious Batard is a lot sweeter with the Grand Marnier of course.

Octopus "Pastrami" - braised ham hock, pommery mustard, new potatoes

It was a pretty generous piece of "pastrami." I liked it, though it was almost too much squid for me. Octopus can easily become tough, but this was not. The ham hocks remind me of the crispy skin on top of roast pork from Chinese restaurants, always delicious. I think the little potatoes balanced out the dish nicely. I think that the pastrami would have been even better in smaller pieces on top of a crostini.

Foie Gras Special

I believe this was an additional supplement, but it's hard to say no to foie. Served pate style with a small piece of toast or crostini.

Brandt Beef Short Rib - lovage polenta, grilled wagyu beef tongue, black pepper streusel

The beef tongue was good. It tastes kind of like a cross between corned beef, steak, and jerky. I enjoyed the flavor. The short ribs were so tender that it didn't need sauce, but the sauce was put it over the top. The julienned vegetables were a nice touch. The polenta was not bad. I used to think I didn't like polenta, but it's growing on me. Actually I think they just make it so that the grains are very fine and end up tasting more creamy.

Duck Breast - persimmon, braised endive, almonds, chervil

It's nice to see duck in an American restaurant with the skin on. It was savory & juicy. The persimmon & endive injected some sweet and bitter to the profile.

Coffee & Milk "Kardinal" - French meringue, milk jam

This was presented in a very pretty way. Plus meringues are just fun to eat. Though it got to be too sweet once we finished it. By we, I mean I finished it.

Almond Cookies were presented nicely with our check. Very nice touch. I don't know why restaurants give complimentary sweets with the bill these days. Maybe to soften the blow? lol

All in all, the dishes are presented in a way that seem like sparing quantities on rather large plates, but we were quite full once we consumed that meal. & service was great.

We had such a great time watching our sushi chefs prepare our food in front of us. They are hilarious too. It's like getting dinner and a show. Needless to say, the food was outstanding. I would love to go back one day.

I sure made use of my over-the-knee boots this past year. Now that it's warmer, I will have to put them away until wintertime.

I still would like to get my hands on these or these. I really like how the Stuart Weitzman 'Highland' boots...

do not have a very wide calf circumference,
has a more rounded toe,
has a sturdier heel,
and does not have a very high heel, which makes them look manageable for walking around all day.

Maybe I'll splurge on a pair of Stuart Weitzmans one day. The ones I'm wearing are just a very cheap pair I got from China. I just wanted an inexpensive pair that I could wear all the time. I like these, because the heel is only around 3.5 inches, so I can go for miles in them. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on suede boots, because suede is too high maintenance for me. Also, I'd be upset if I got an expensive pair of shoes dirty.

Dinosaur BBQ in Harlem makes me forget I'm in NYC. The restaurant has so much character, not to mention it is rather spacious. The meats have excellent smoky flavor. The simmered greens had a pickled taste. After a while, it was too sour for me. But, over all I really enjoyed the meal.

After a long walk around Central Park, we needed to cool down. I had wanted to try Lady M, so we stopped in for a snack. They got me with the 18% gratuity fee. From now on, I will only grab and go. It was a rather fancy experience. But oh my, this was delicious. Flavor was definitely on point. Yet, it didn't feel too heavy going down. I think I could eat entire cake by myself.

State Bird Provisions is a pretty young establishment, but it has been so wildly successful. We recently had a spare afternoon while wondering around the Fillmore. We were also pretty hungry. It was still early for dinner, but there was already one person waiting outside of SBP, so I thought why not line up behind him? A little over an hour later, the line got a lot longer, so I was glad I actually decided to stand there. By then, I was very much looking forward to sitting down and eating!

I have passed by SPQR many times and never thought twice about it. I'm glad we recently gave it a try.

I was on a steak tartare kick. SPQR's version was indeed enjoyable and rather refreshing, if meat can even be refreshing. I often enjoy the texture of jelly, and the horseradish jelly was no exception. The presentation was nice, but the 'burnt flour cracker' was a pretty bland and cumbersome.

If there is some type of animal liver dish, I will probably want to order it. I was hesitant about the rhubarb, but it added a lot of sweetness and balanced out the rich liver mousse very well.

Sunny Maxi Days

We are experiencing some undeniable climate change around here... I don't recall getting this many days of sunshine when I was a kid. I mostly remember foggy mornings, foggy afternoons, and wind...lots of wind. Well we still get plenty of wind. Fortunately, these days are definitely warmer, so I took the opportunity to wear my maxi dress. Unfortunately, this warmer climate goes hand in hand with this drought that started some years ago, and never really ended. =[

Still, it is necessary to layer around here, because you never know when the fog will roll in. Plus, there's a lot of microclimates in SF - hot spots, cold spots, sunspots, windy hills, windy tunnels, etc... so I always bring a sweater or a jacket and tuck it away in my bag, unless I'm already wearing said jacket.

Looking back...December 2014 - Shanghai, China

I didn't expect to make another trip across the Pacific Ocean so soon, but my family and I received news of my grandfather passing away shortly after Thanksgiving. So we all made arrangements for the funeral. As much as we all miss him and wish he could stay with us longer, I personally believe he is now at peace and hopefully finally back together with grandma.

This time I didn't have the heart to stick around for more than a week (more like 4.5 days on the ground after travel time) because of the circumstances, not to mention my weakness when it comes to air pollution and harsh winter weather - though it wasn't even that cold yet.

While my parents were mingling with all the guests who attended the funeral service, I snuck away and took a selfie - I was saddled with my crossbody bag, a tote bag, a camera bag, and also carrying a backpack. Why do older people like to carry around so much stuff?

My relatives always take time out of their busy schedules to hang out with me. I'm so grateful to call them family.

Tim and I only spent a couple of days in Seoul, Korea, so it was a little difficult to learn about the place and see the major attractions. Maybe we'll go back one day.
It was hard to keep track of the places we ate at, because there's no Yelp and I didn't know how to read anything. But when in Seoul, you eat Korean BBQ, because: 1. KBBQ usually tastes pretty good, & 2. KBBQ is unavoidable, and thus, all the streets smell like KBBQ.

I think the magnolia leaf's primary purpose is just for presentation. Perhaps it adds something during the cooking process, but it was a little cumbersome trying to eat with it on my plate.

The beef itself was very good without sauce, but the sauce did add an a little something extra. I believe the filet is about 6 ounces, which looks tiny compared to the sauce. Presentation is pretty, but I don't see the need for the flowers on top.

This might be the first panna cotta I've liked. Perhaps I've never had one made properly. The flavors of the biscotti(?) and apricot go well together. Again, I don't see the point of the flower petals.

It's chocolate. Need I say more? It has a nice berry filling on the inside too. It was so delicous.

Overall I liked pretty much everything and hopefully will return for happy hour. I will say this though. For a restaurant that charges $128 for their omakase menu, I was a tiny bit surprised to see disposable chopsticks.

All Saints Belvedere Jacket

I've been looking to purchase a real leather jacket. I knew I wanted it to be a little rugged and heavier, so it would be warmer than my faux leather jackets. I also wanted a pretty simple design without a lot of lapels, as are often on leather jackets, but still with a little detail here and there. Since I was for the most part, pretty sure about what I wanted and not in too much of a hurry to run out and buy one, I took my time browsing and checking out my options. Much to my dismay, the ones that really caught my attention were in the $1000 - $3000 range. Which is just as well, since they were buttery smooth, and I'd be afraid of putting a million scratches in the leather. I realized I needed a slightly rougher, more textured type of leather.

I had decided on the All Saints Belvedere jacket a few months ago. Even at $505, I tried it on a few times and mulled it over. I always thought All Saints didn't put their classic pieces on sale, but lo and behold, they had a sale for 25% off the entire store, so I decided it was time to buy.

& here's a photo of my lamenting (sort of) over the decision in the fitting room...

and now it's mine and I've thoroughly enjoyed wearing it. It's also served me well especially during windy days & nights.

Minimal Sandals

I've been looking for a pair of plain flat sandals for a while. It's been raining lately, so there's been no rush to purchase. I've just been browsing the internet for options and below are a few that have struck my fancy. I have a few pairs of flat sandals that are T-strap with no material around the toes. I realized I need some sort of toe strap to actually hold my foot in the shoe, because my feet tend to get tired since they're always lifting off the footbed when I walk. I also wanted the sandals to not have any toe separation. I was looking for something basic in style, no frills, and essentially very minimalist.

I also anticipated that this style would be popular this season. In the last year, the ankle strap high-heeled sandal was so popular that nearly ever brand from fast fashion to luxurious high-end brands each had their own version. It's no wonder that the same style in a flat sandal version would make the same splash, especially since it is a more practical wardrobe piece.

This one is probably my favorite design. I love black and gold together, and the (faux?) suede looks soft and comfy. But since it's a UK retailer, I'm not sure if there's a customs tax. Please let me know if you've ordered from this website before.
Forever 21 Luxe T-Strap Sandals
This F21 design looks very similar to the DP version, but it seems to me F21 shoe sizing runs bigger and bigger. I'm normally a size 5.5-6, and the last time I tried a 5.5, the footbed was rather roomy.
Forever 21 Bejeweled T-Strap Sandals
I know the jewels on this pair make the shoe less of a minimalist style, but the jewels look very easy to remove. I saw and tried this pair on in store. The jewels are just connected with some type of fishing line, doesn't look like they'd hold up anyway.

I purchased the Urban Outfitters Blue Neve Minimal Sandal, because they appeared the most basic. I'm not sure how comfortable the skinny straps will be, but so far they are decently comfortable.
